The aim of this minor field study was to produce a physical plan of the Culemborg goods yard in Cape Town, South Africa, with a distinct alignment towards sustainability for a middle to low income group. With the use of a Kevin Lynch analysis, a block analysis and analysis by Piet Louw the information that had been collected through inventory and study of previous projects of the site was processed. A SWOT-analysis summarized the analyses and from that a few keywords were derived. The keywords, such as pedestrian friendly, dense, integration, mix use, etc., were used as goals in the drafting of the physical plan for the goods yard. Through this a plan proposal was created for the whole area. The authors chose one area each within the plan to explore more deeply. This resulted in two situation plans, one for ‘the activity bridge’ and one for ‘the centre of Culemborg’.

Syftet med det här examensarbetet och Minor Field Study var att producera en fysisk plan för ett oanvänt bangårdsområde i centrala Kapstaden, Sydafrika. Planen skulle ha en tydlig inriktning mot hållbar utveckling samt mot låg och medelinkomsttagare. Information om Culemborg inhämtades genom inventering och studier av tidigare projekt på området. De metoder som användes för att insamla fakta var en Kevin Lynch-analys, en kvartersanalys samt en stadsdelsanalys gjord av en lokal arkitekt och planerare. Fakta om Culemborg sammanfattades med hjälp av en SWOT-analys varifrån några nyckelord valdes ut. Nyckelorden användes sedan som målsättning under det att en gemensam fysisk plan arbetades fram. Därefter inriktade sig författarna på varsitt område inom den gemensamma planen vilket resulterade i två situationsplaner; ”the activity bridge” och ”the centre och Culemborg”.
