Abstract [en]

The emergence of nanotechnology as a general purpose technology has introduced a new dimension to science and technology and has a ffected various technological domains. Thus, it is not a homogeneous technology, but rather a group of related technologies. The inherent potential of nanotechnology and its economic benefi t have persuaded many countries to invest billions in research and development of nanotechnology. The evidence implies that nano science has shifted from a theoretical to applied phase since basic research moves toward engineering fields. However, delivering the result of research to the market and entering into the commercialization process requires proper infrastructure, experience in manufacturing process, knowledge of marketing strategies and indeed an investment as engine of any business. In this process universities play a signifi cant role in linking science and innovation, particularly in an emerging domain such as nanotechnology. This study explores the available mechanisms of technology transfer in nanotechnology. Di ffusion of nanotechnology into the business is examined in the nine Nordic universities and the linkage between universities and the fi rms is investigated from the university perspective. The main research issues addressed include the mechanisms of technology transfer, the impact of interdisciplinary of nanotechnology, the interaction of the university and firm, the role of policy makers and intermediary organizations in the di ffusion of nanotechnology and the faculty attitudes. The method used include data analysis based on a web-based questionnaire. The descriptive statistics and an analytical modeling are used on the original data collected through this questionnaire.
