Abstract [en]

China is a developing country, using the construction sector to fuel its economy. This combination results in new developments based on contemporary fashions of urban spaces from the western hemisphere. This comes at the expense of the county’s built history, its historic fabric which has been created continuously in history. This causes the city to lose its cultural & historical heritage and the established organic growth which the cities were built upon. Industrial sites exists in abundance in China, new and old. These old sites are often forgotten and in a state of advanced decay. The focus of this thesis is on rehabilitating a former industrial site in Yanziji, Nanjing, China with the concepts of Urban regeneration and Collective memories as well as analysing cases globally and in China culminating with creating a conceptual design. This thesis focuses on the historical city of Nanjing but use inspirations from other areas as well for more in-depth knowledge. To learn more about contemporary China, the urban environment and its people, it is important to analyse its history in order to better design and transform urban spaces with urban regeneration and collective memories. This includes understanding how old industrial sites can become humanised as well as attaining a atmosphere which is inspired and resembles the Republic of China era during the years of 1912-1949.Conclusions show that there is an overwhelming need to develop the country which comes with neglected social dimensions. This has resulted in difficulties for people to connect to the built environmentin China, both physically and emotionally.Beijing’s 798 Art district and Shanghai’s M50 are world renowned areas representing how rehabilitated industrial sites can thrive using urban regeneration and collective memories to create and shape people’s experiences of the site. Nanjing is using culture-led regeneration to rehabilitate industrial sites. This involves by creating a narrative and adapting the area for more human interactions. In many cases however the old urban fabric is removed which damages and weakens the cultural and historical heritage while making it more difficult for people to connect physically and emotionally to the area. Good examples of rehabilitated industrial sites in Nanjing have are 1865 Creative Park and 1912 which are based on their built environments, narratives and humanised spaces. The built environment is filled with new characters & symbols to fill up the visual blur in order to create a new atmosphere to accommodate the new spatial activities. This encourages people to more physical and emotional interactions with their surroundings. The culmination of this thesis is based on the following answers to the research question and objectives. These have been implemented to create a conceptual plan that focuses on modernising and humanising Yanziji Industrial Park, based on keeping the cultural & historic heritage and creating spaces for new spatial activities and functions. The conceptual plan is designed to ensure that Yanziji Industrial Park is a place that ultimately will enhance the city and increase its diversity.
