This is a study with a low participant count of eight people with a focus on software asset management specialists’ workstyles. The purpose of this study was to compare how employees experience working with a spreadsheet application and a database application on the counts of mental workload and user experience. This was to give reason and motivation for companies to keep or switch systems. The results from testing workload and user experience with NASA-TLX, system usability scale and other methods, showed that employees working with Excel files have more workload and worse user experience compared to a corresponding database application. This conclusion was further supported by interviews with the participants. They expressed that the Excel files are a viable option, but the files get more time consuming and inefficient when the files get larger and cumbersome when the files need to be shared among other people.
