I conducted research focused on bridging language barriers between non-Swedish speakingwomen and nurses while at a pap-smear appointment where the nurses use picture-aid to communicatein order to fill out their referrals. In this article I gathered qualitative and quantitative data, on both the clinic’s pictures and my redesigned pictures in order to compare them. This was done usingparticipatory design methods, specifically Stanford Design Thinking Process (n.d), to show howimportant it is to use participants' insights and knowledge when designing something meant for them. The results showed significant improvement of comprehension when tested on the participants, further proving that leaning on only specialist competencies, such as speech therapists and pedagogs, and not inquiring the actual users can lead to an incomprehensive result for the actual users of the endproduct.
