How does IT-consultants reason in their consulting process regarding the development of a clients IT-based internal recruitment system? The purpose with this paper is to investigate how an IT-consultant is reasoning in a consulting process and investigate whether consultants are using established models and methods in their work. We have chosen to work with a qualitative examination to attain our purpose. In our work gathering the empirical facts we have been working with a case study, an observation and a simulation exercise. The combination of these has made it possible to carry out the paper and produce the most correct data possible. Conclusion: We state that IT-consultants do not use any theory-based methods, they use process methods created by themselves and their company. We can however discern similarities between the consultants and the theories based on literature in how a consultant process takes place. We claim that the consultants in a developing-project reason on the basis of their personally composed process methods, however with natural segments of the theory included that in its turn characterizes the consultant’s way of reasoning.

Hur resonerar IT-konsulter i deras konsultationsprocess rörande utvecklandet av en kunds IT-baserade internrekryteringssystem? Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur en IT-konsult resonerar i en konsultationsprocess samt undersöka huruvida konsulter använder sig av fastställda modeller och metoder i sitt arbete. Vi har valt att arbeta med en kvalitativ undersökning för att uppnå vårt syfte. För vår insamling av empiri har vi använt oss av en fallstudie, observation samt simulering. Kombinationen av dessa har gjort det möjligt att genomföra uppsatsen och få fram en så rättvisande data som möjligt. Slutsats: Vi konstaterar att dagens IT-konsulter inte använder sig av några teoretiskt fastställda metoder, utan snarare använder sig av processmetoder utarbetade av konsultföretaget och konsulten. Dock kan vi urskilja likheter mellan konsulterna och de presenterade teorierna i hur en konsultationsprocess går till. Vi hävdar att konsulterna i ett utvecklingsprojekt resonerar utifrån de egenhändigt formulerade processmetoderna, dock med naturliga inslag av teorin, som i sin tur sätter prägel på konsulternas sätt att resonera.
