This document is a summary of my work to create a project management system for a small firm working with computer graphics. The intention is to manage customers, projects, images and invoices in the easiest possible way. To make the system as flexible as possible a web-interface was chosen which makes it possible to access the system from any computer, making it independent of any particular operating system. The only requirement on the user environment is that the computer must have a connection to the Internet to be able to access the system. The different techniques that have been used to develop the project management system is primarily Ruby on Rails and a MySQL database. Although Ruby on Rails was completely new to me, I decided to use this framework instead of PHP, which I already have a good knowledge of, because of the benefits Ruby on Rails provide. These benefits are described more later on in this paper. The requirements I have on this project management system has its origin in the needs I have in my own firm, which I started a few years before I began my education. A well-functioning system to manage projects and images will quickly save me a lot of time and make it easier for me to have control of all the projects at once. I have used the knowledge that my education in Media Technology has given me in this work. It shows that, within a reasonable time, it is possible to create a well performing project management system, while learning a new programming language at the same time.

Detta dokument sammanfattar mitt arbete med att skapa ett projekthanteringssystem som på ett enkelt sätt hanterar kunder, projekt, bilder och fakturering för en liten firma som arbetar med datorgrafik. För att systemet ska vara så flexibelt som möjligt föll valet på ett webbgränssnitt som möjliggör åtkomst till systemet från vilken dator som helst oberoende av operativsystem. Det enda krav som ställs på användarmiljön är att datorn måste ha en uppkoppling mot Internet för att systemet ska kunna användas. Tekniker som har använts för att utveckla projekthanteringssystemet är primärt Ruby on Rails och databasen MySQL. Även om Ruby on Rails var helt nytt för mig valde jag detta ramverk framför det för mig bekanta språket PHP, eftersom Ruby on Rails fördelar, som beskrivs närmre längre fram, vägde tyngre än den initiella inlärningstiden som det innebar. De krav som finns på systemet har sitt ursprung i de behov jag har i min egen firma som jag startade några år innan jag påbörjade min utbildning. Ett väl fungerande system för att hantera projekt och bilder kommer snabbt att spara tid och göra mitt arbete lättare att överblicka. I detta arbete har jag använt mig av de grundkunskaper som min utbildningen i Medieteknik har gett mig. Detta arbete visar att det inom rimlig tid går att skapa ett bra fungerande projekthanteringssystem, samtidigt som man lär sig ett nytt programmeringsspråk.
