FEM Simulations of Induction Hardening Process
Blekinge Institute of Technology, School of Engineering.
2013 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
Abstract [en]

Induction heating is the process of heating an electrically conducting object by electromagnetic induction, where eddy currents are generated within the metal and resistance leads to Joule heating of the metal. Heating is followed by immediate quenching. The quenched metal undergoes a martensitic transformation, increasing the hardness of the part. The process is widely used in industrial operations. In this thesis, the Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations of the process have been studied. In practice, this means that a coupling between the electro-magnetic, thermal, mechanical and metallurgical phenomenon have been modeled and studied in LS-DYNA. The simulation results have been compared to experimental results from literature [5]. The comparison and the software’s simulation performance have been used to evaluate the maturity of LS-DYNA to model the real process.
