Abstract [en]

The goals of VPC management functions are to reduce the call blocking probability, increase responsiveness, stability, and fairness. As telecommunications traffics experience variations in the number of calls per time unit, due to office hours, inaccurate forecasting, quick changes in traffic loads (e.g. New Year's Eve), and changes in the types of traffic (as in introduction of new services), this can be met by adaptive capacity reallocation and topology reconfiguration. Brief explanations of the closely related concepts effective bandwidth and routing are given together with an overview of ATM. Fundamentally different approaches for VPC capacity reallocations are compared and their pros and cons are discussed. Finally, a further development of one of the approaches is described.

För att utnyttja ett tele/datornäts kapacitet på bästa möjliga sätt och samtidigt garantera kvalitet på överföringen av data, reserveras kapacitet på nätet med sk logiska länkar (VP=Virtual Paths). Eftersom trafiken varierar under dygnet (arbetstider), veckorna och året (t ex nyårsafton) samt ändrar karaktär pga nya tjänster osv, är en automatisk kapacitetshantering önskvärd. I denna rapport förklaras de termer som är förknippade med vägval, reservering av kapacitet och hur mycket kapacitet som behövs. Dessutom ges en översikt av ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) tekniken. Flera olika metoder för kapacitetshantering jämförs med varandra och deras för- och nackdelar diskuteras. Avslutningsvis undersöks en av metoderna lite extra.
