Abstract
Borealis process plant in Stenungsund produce a worldleading insulation material for high voltage cables. A cross-linked polyethylene with aextra high level of cleanliness and quality, also known as PEX. The process use peroxide as additive. The peroxide system have problem with the current sealing solution, leaking gaskets is a risks for both production and safety.
The cleanliness demand limits gasket materials to bare metal. One request is to minimize the stagnant zonesbetween the flange and gasket, where material build up and oxidize, which is a great quality issue for the production process.
My task is to develop a new gasket within the cleanliness demands and write an installation description. The study gives insight to common gasket types and materials, presenting existing and generated new sealing solutions. The developing work also goes into re-engineering of an existing gasket. The contradiction is to make a relatively hard material as metal to react in a soft and elastic way. Calculation and simulations indicate the surface pressure of the gasket, to determine the sealing ability a prototype is manufactured and physically tested.
Using Borealis pressure testing equipment for valves the finished prototype undergoes a pressure test, with the purpose to simulate a field installation. The current gasket used for the peroxide system is also tested for benchmarking purpose. The gasket where also installed in the peroxide system. The test results supplies data for the future development of the gasket.
