3D och kommunal fysisk planering2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Effects of Charismatic Clients on Auditors Objectivity2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study empirically examines and attempts to model auditors’ relationships with their charismatic clients. Reviewing the prevailing research on charismatic leadership theories and auditor situation as well as related literature, we posit that the prevailing major models pertaining to charismatic leadership can be applied to extend and refine the current models of auditor acquiescence. After hypothesizing such a model, we design an instrument based on the revised Conger-Kanungo model used by (Su & Huang, 2004) to measure the extent to which auditor identify with a charismatic client. We then use the instrument to directly measure auditors’ attachment to the charismatic client and the threat of this attraction and attachment to auditors’ objectivity. Empirical results from our sample of N=192 auditors in the U.S and Sweden demonstrate that a new improved charismatic leadership model indeed could be emerged and fit to the actual situation of auditors. We specifically find an indication that Client Identification will increase the risk of auditor acquiescence. Combined with Professional identification driving increased the risk of Client identification, Professional Identification appears not to provide the resilience against acquiescence that we hypothesized. Instead the clear direct connection of the charismatic leadership affecting the auditors objectivity warrants study of a model where Client Identification and Professional Identification as mere variants of each other (Clients business just being another profession).

    Abstract [sv]

Abstract Integrated mental training is a method that entails a systematic and long-term training of mental processes (thoughts, images, emotions) that aims to enhance performance as well as gratify feelings and improve thought processes. This training develops an alternative system of control by using substitute state of consciousness and self-hypnosis. The method is concerned with both mindfulness and performance approaches, which is crucial in order to feel and function better. The intent of this study is to highlight the experience of the different steps of integrated mental training to gain an understanding of how, where, and when changes occur. To achieve the objective of this study, a qualitative empirical method was used. As far as analysis is concerned, phenomenology analytic approach was adopted. The study participants were six long-term sick listed women. During the eight meetings they were introduced to the process and in between the meetings they performed the training using self-instructor CD. Their experience of the training was recorded through the diary entries upon which the study’s analysis was based. The finding shows that it takes different time-spans to reach the different stages and that large positive experience of change occur during the first steps. This suggests that a mindfulness approach is instrumental in feelings enhancement. Further, the first part of the mental conceptions gives strengthened self-esteem and increased faith in oneself. There is no illuminating finding with regard to self-creation of mental representations, which may be due to the short training time for this group.

Vilka faktorer i service branschens arbetsmiljö har betydelse för social trötthet?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Barns och tonåringars välmående2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This paper examined if childrens wellbeing affected their social and academic competence. The data was collected through an anonymous study using questionnaires, where the measuring instruments GHQ12 and EQ was used, and also a number of questions concerning academic competence. The population concisted twentytwo eight grade students, both girls and boys. The population had both Swedish and foreign ancestry. The result showed that wellbeing and the academic competence had a positive correlation. However there was a negative correlation between the other variables. At large the results showed that the child´s own perception by itself and perception of their social and academic competences was affected by the parents perception of the child and its competences. The results also showed that the child’s wellbeing had meaning for the child’s development and capability in everyday life, thereby both the social and academic competence. Keywords: Social Competence, Academic Competence, Wellbeing, Judgement, EQ, GHQ12.

Distribution of personality, individual characteristics and internet usage in Swedish older adults2012In: Aging and Mental Health, ISSN 1360-7863 , Vol. 16, no 1, p. 119-126Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: This paper investigated factors associated with internet usage in the Swedish older adults ranging in age from 60 to 96. Personality traits and individual characteristics have been previously noted to influence internet usage, where older adults have not been the focus population. In this study the relationships between personality, individual characteristics and internet usage were investigated. Methods: A descriptive analysis of the personality tests of a total of 1402 subjects included in the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care (SNAC) was conducted. Three variables were controlled for: sex, age and education. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, chi square tests and a logistic regression were used in order to detect the relationships with internet usage. Results: Men differ significantly from women in the personality traits analysis. Those with higher education were more open and neuroticism was lower in the oldest older adults. Internet usage declined significantly with age and those with middle to higher education were using the internet the most. No other associations with internet use were found Conclusion: Personality traits and individual characteristics do not seem to influence the Swedish older adult and their internet usage. What one needs to account for is the age and education of the person. The more educated and the youngest cohorts were using the internet more frequently.

GROWTH: En studie om hur man kan skapa liv i en post-apokalyptisk spelvärld2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Make-believe and make-belief in Second Life role-playing communities2012In: Convergence. The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies, ISSN 1354-8565, E-ISSN 1748-7382, Vol. 18, no 1, p. 85-92Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This feature article applies the concepts of 'make-believe' and 'make-belief' formulated by performance theorist, Richard Schechner, in a study of two role-play communities, Midian City and Gor in the online 3D environment Second Life. With make-believe fantasy role-play at their core, members of the two communities negotiate the social and political norms, the goals of the community and as well as the boundaries of the virtual role-play. The article explores the innovative forms of interaction at play in these negotiation processes, using (cyber)ethnographic methods and the analysis of various textual sources, Goffman's theories of social performance as well as various types of performance discussed by Schechner and Auslander. The innovative forms of interaction are analysed in the light of the new technology and as performances and make-belief strategies directed towards realizing performative utopias, towards influencing the direction in which leaders and residents of this digital context want the role-play to develop, and towards shaping the emergent social and cultural rules and the political framework of the role-play.

Investigating Acceptance Behavior in Software Engineering – Theoretical Perspectives2023In: Journal of Systems and Software, ISSN 0164-1212, E-ISSN 1873-1228, Vol. 198, article id 111592Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Software engineering research aims to establish software development practice on a scientific basis. However, the evidence of the efficacy of technology is insufficient to ensure its uptake in industry. In the absence of a theoretical frame of reference, we mainly rely on best practices and expert judgment from industry-academia collaboration and software process improvement research to improve the acceptance of the proposed technology. Objective: To identify acceptance models and theories and discuss their applicability in the research of acceptance behavior related to software development.Method: We analyzed literature reviews within an interdisciplinary team to identify models and theories relevant to software engineering research. We further discuss acceptance behavior from the human information processing perspective of automatic and affect-driven processes (“fast” system 1 thinking) and rational and rule-governed processes (“slow” system 2 thinking). Results: We identified 30 potentially relevant models and theories. Several of them have been used in researching acceptance behavior in contexts related to software development, but few have been validated in such contexts. They use constructs that capture aspects of (automatic) system 1 and (rational) system 2 oriented processes. However, their operationalizations focus on system 2-oriented processes indicating a rational view of behavior, thus overlooking important psychological processes underpinning behavior. Conclusions: Software engineering research may use acceptance behavior models and theories more extensively to understand and predict practice adoption in the industry. Such theoretical foundations will help improve the impact of software engineering research. However, more consideration should be given to their validation, overlap, construct operationalization, and employed data collection mechanisms when using these models and theories.

Micro-Expression Extraction For Lie Detection Using Eulerian Video (Motion and Color) Magnication2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Lie-detection has been an evergreen and evolving subject. Polygraph techniques have been the most popular and successful technique till date. The main drawback of the polygraph is that good results cannot be attained without maintaining a physical contact, of the subject under test. In general, this physical contact would induce extra consciousness in the subject. Also, any sort of arousal in the subject triggers false positives while performing the traditional polygraph based tests. With all these drawbacks in the polygraph, also, due to rapid developments in the fields of computer vision and artificial intelligence, with newer and faster algorithms, have compelled mankind to search and adapt to contemporary methods in lie-detection. Observing the facial expressions of emotions in a person without any physical contact and implementing these techniques using artificial intelligence is one such method. The concept of magnifying a micro expression and trying to decipher them is rather premature at this stage but would evolve in future. Magnification using EVM technique has been proposed recently and it is rather new to extract these micro expressions from magnified EVM based on HOG features. Till date, HOG features have been used in conjunction with SVM, and generally for person/pedestrian detection. A newer, simpler and contemporary method of applying EVM with HOG features and Back-propagation Neural Network jointly has been introduced and proposed to extract and decipher the micro-expressions on the face. Micro-expressions go unnoticed due to its involuntary nature, but EVM is used to magnify them and makes them noticeable. Emotions behind the micro-expressions are extracted and recognized using the HOG features \& Back-Propagation Neural Network. One of the important aspects that has to be dealt with human beings is a biased mind. Since, an investigator is also a human and, he too, has to deal with his own assumptions and emotions, a Neural Network is used to give the investigator an unbiased start in identifying the true emotions behind every micro-expression. On the whole, this proposed system is not a lie-detector, but helps in detecting the emotions of the subject under test. By further investigation, a lie can be detected.

    Abstract [sv]

Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale.

Constituting "the subject" in poststructuralist discourse.2006In: Feminism & Psychology, ISSN 0959-3535 , Vol. 16, no 1, p. 87-103Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we describe a collective biography that we convened in order to revisit the site of the radical theoretical break with the liberal humanist individual marked by the poststructuralist work of Henriques and colleagues and the feminist poststructuralist work of Weedon. These writers suggest that the new subject of poststructuralist theory will be more open to the changes desired by feminist and social justice movements. They describe the break with the liberal humanist subject as a break that heralds new possibilities of personal and cultural transformation. In this article, using the medium of collective biography stories, we revisit the relation between the liberal humanist individual and the transformative possibilities poststructuralist writers envisaged for the new subject of poststructuralism. We situate the discussion in the context of our transformation into neoliberal subjects over the last three decades.

Media and the priming of stereotypes: Direct effect of news articles racial stereotypes on individuals judgements of people of foreign extraction.2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The present research examined both automatic and controlled processes in newpapers ability of priming racial stereotypes via the portrayals of people of foreign extraction. The automatic process were examined through articles which; a) involved an illegal act or b) the act was not illegal but morally questionable. Swedish-born subject’s explicit opinions against foreign people were also measured through “The Modern Racial Prejudice Scale”. In the experiment participants read four different articles which included; Swedish person/noncrime, foreign person/noncrime, Swedish person/crime and foreign person/crime. The central hypothesis was that news containing people of foreign extraction primes racial stereotypes which are subsequently brought to bear on subject’s evaluations of that person’s characteristics. A 2 ´ 2 ´ 2 ANOVA splitt-plot design revealed that there was no significant difference in judgments of the different articles depending on race or content . A distinction between sterotype activation and sterotype application are discussed.

Effects of individual planning prior to teamwork on generation of ideas and goals.2011In: Baltic Journal of Psychology, ISSN 1407-768X, Vol. 12, no 1-2, p. 46-58Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of Experiment 1 was to compare the effects of structured vs non-structured interaction and individual planning prior to interaction vs no planning on group performance, i.e. number of ideas generated. Participants (N = 99) were randomly assigned to 3-person groups. Analysis indicated that both strategies increased effectiveness of groups working on a task requiring creativity. Experiment 2 was a field experiment with 57 participants who worked in 3-person groups on an idea and goal-generating task. In Experiment 3 (N = 216), a more complex design was used to test the validity of initial findings in the first two experiments. Analysis showed that individual planning prior to interaction increase number of ideas

    Abstract [sv]

The study aims to increase understanding and knowledge of motivation; this by examining how the leader experiences her capability to promote employees' work motivation. Also, how employees perceive that the leader influence and enhance their work motivation. Interviews were conducted with a manager and two employees of a government agency in Sweden. The results demonstrate different opinions between manager and employees in the manager's ability to foster motivation in the everyday work. The leader thinks that she promotes her employees work positively and believes that she is giving her employees attention and appreciation. Employees mean that they lack feedback and pep talk in their everyday work. The results showed that employees believe that feedback and pep talk in everyday work is promoting work motivation. The leader believes that motivation is promoted through education and lifelong learning.

Psychometric properties and factor structure of the Swedish version of the Perceived Stress Scale.2014In: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry, ISSN 0803-9488, E-ISSN 1502-4725, Vol. 68, no 7, p. 494-9Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) measures general stress and the Swedish version, although used in several studies, has not been extensively evaluated for psychometric properties. Aims: This study aimed to investigate psychometric properties and the factor solution of the Swedish 14-item version when used with two samples, namely a mixed Internet sample of women and men (n = 171) and another of women with stress-related disorders (n = 84). Classical test theory, including confirmatory factor analysis, was employed. Results: The factor structure supported a two-factor model for the PSS and confirmed other language versions of the PSS, although one items showed a low item-total correlation. The PSS showed to be feasible with the investigated samples and the results indicated no ceiling or floor effects and good internal consistency of the PSS. Several aspects of construct validity were shown. An association of − 0.66 between the PSS and a measure of coping indicated good concurrent validity. Criterion validity was demonstrated through a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) between the women with stress-related disorders and the Internet sample. Predictive validity of the PSS could be demonstrated in a short-term perspective. Based on the sample with stress-related disorders, sensitivity to change was shown through a statistically significant stress reduction (P < 0.001) from entering work rehabilitation to discharge. Conclusions: The Swedish version of the PSS showed satisfactory psychometric properties and may be recommended for use with people with and without known stress-related disorders.

Modelling Perceptual Quality and Visual Saliency for Image and Video Communications2010Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The evolution of advanced radio transmission technologies for third and future generation mobile radio systems has paved the way for the delivery of mobile multimedia services. This is further enabled through contemporary video coding standards, such as H.264/AVC, allowing wireless image and video applications to become a reality on modern mobile devices. The extensive amount of data needed to represent the visual content and the scarce channel bandwidth constitute great challenges for network operators to deliver an intended quality of service. Appropriate metrics are thus instrumental for service providers to monitor the quality as experienced by the end user. This thesis focuses on subjective and objective assessment methods of perceived visual quality in image and video communication. The content of the thesis can be broadly divided into four parts. Firstly, the focus is on the development of image quality metrics that predict perceived quality degradations due to transmission errors. The metrics follow the reduced-reference approach, thus, allowing to measure quality loss during image communication with only little overhead as side information. The metrics are designed and validated using subjective quality ratings from two experiments. The distortion assessment performance is further demonstrated through an application for filter design. The second part of the thesis then investigates various methodologies to further improve the quality prediction performance of the metrics. In this respect, several properties of the human visual system are investigated and incorporated into the metric design. It is shown that the quality prediction performance can be considerably improved using these methodologies. The third part is devoted to analysing the impact of the complex distortion patterns on the overall perceived quality, following two goals. Firstly, the confidence of human observers is analysed to identify the difficulties during assessment of the distorted images, showing, that indeed the level of confidence is highly dependent on the level of visual quality. Secondly, the impact of content saliency on the perceived quality is identified using region-of-interest selections and eye tracking data from two independent subjective experiments. It is revealed, that the saliency of the distortion region indeed has an impact on the overall quality perception and also on the viewing behaviour of human observers when rating image quality. Finally, the quality perception of H.264/AVC coded video containing packet loss is analysed based on the results of a combined subjective video quality and eye tracking experiment. It is shown that the distortion location in relation to the content saliency has a tremendous impact on the overall perceived quality. Based on these findings, a framework for saliency aware video quality assessment is proposed that strongly improves the quality prediction performance of existing video quality metrics.

Comparing Two Eye-Tracking Databases: The Effect Of Experimental Setup And Image Presentation Time On The Creation Of Saliency Maps2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Visual attention models are typically designed based on human gaze patterns recorded through eye tracking. In this paper, two similar eye tracking experiments from independent laboratories are presented, in which humans observed natural images under task-free condition. The resulting saliency maps are analysedwith respect to two criteria; the consistency between the experiments and the impact of the image presentation time. It is shown, that the saliency maps between the experiments are strongly correlated independent of presentation time. It is further revealed that the presentation time can be reduced without substantially sacrificing the accuracy of the convergent saliency map. The results provide valuable insight into the similarity of saliency maps from independent laboratories and are highly beneficial for the creation of converging saliency maps at reduced experimental time and cost.

Analysing Inter-Observer Saliency Variations in Task-Free Viewing of Natural Images2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We analyse variations of saliency between human observers when viewing natural image content. For this purpose, we conducted an eye tracking experiment to record gaze patterns of humans when viewing natural images. The resulting gaze patterns were used to create saliency maps for each observer and image. A correlation analysis is then conducted with the aim to quantify the variability of saliency between the observers and the different images. The results are considered to be a first step towards gaining a better understanding regarding the reliability of saliency maps for natural images.

The Effect of Spatial Distortion Distributions on Human Viewing Behaviour when Judging Image Quality2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In wireless communication, distortions are induced into an image through both lossy source coding and an error prone channel. The combination thereof causes complex distortion patterns in the visual content which vary strongly in their spatial distribution, some being uniformly spread and others being locally clustered. In the context of image quality, it is of interest to identify as to how the distribution of the distortions impact on the visual attention of human observers and thus on the perceived quality. For this reason, we conducted an experiment in which fifteen participants were asked to rate the quality of eighty distorted images and their corresponding reference images, while we recorded their gaze patterns using an eye tracker. The test images contained a wide range of artifact magnitudes, both locally and globally distributed, and were created using a wireless channel simulation model. We then correlate the visual gaze patterns of the human observers with local energy measures of the distortions in order to identify the effect of distortion distributions on the viewing behaviour of human observers when judging image quality. The outcomes serve to improve the prediction performance of objective image quality metrics that we previously proposed.

Visual Fixation Patterns in Subjective Quality Assessment: The Relative Impact of Image Content and Structural Distortions2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The viewing behaviour of human observers during image quality assessment is analysed. In this respect, the relative impact of image content and structural distortions is of particular interest. Two subjective experiments were conducted as a basis for analysis; a region-of-interest (ROI) experiment and an eye tracking experiment under quality assessment task. A correlation analysis and a receiver operating characteristics analysis reveal, that quality assessment takes place mainly within the ROI, indicating a higher impact of the content as compared to the distortions. This seems to be only contradicted by very strong and localised distortions outside the ROI.

Bestraffning av normbrytare. En undersökning i hur grupper i onlinespel bestraffar sina normbrytare.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Studentens perspektiv på feedbackprocessen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Materialet samlades in genom intervjuer.

Hållbart medarbetarengagemang, HME – betydelse och relevans2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sound and Immersion in the First-Person Shooter: Mixed Measurement of the Player's Sonic Experience2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Player immersion is the holy grail of computer game designers particularly in environments such as those found in first-person shooters. However, little is understood about the processes of immersion and much is assumed. This is certainly the case with sound and its immersive potential. Some theoretical work explores this sonic relationship but little experimental data exist to either confirm or invalidate existing theories and assumptions. This paper summarizes and reports on the results of a preliminary psychophysiological experiment to measure human arousal and valence in the context of sound and immersion in first-person shooter computer games. It is conducted in the context of a larger set of psychophysiological investigations assessing the nature of the player experience and is the first in a series of systematic experiments investigating the player's relationship to sound in the genre. In addition to answering questionnaires, participants were required to play a bespoke Half-Life 2 level whilst being measured with electroencephalography, electrocardiography, electromyography, galvanic skin response and eye tracking equipment. We hypothesize that subjective responses correlated with objective measurements provide a more accurate assessment of the player's physical arousal and emotional valence and that changes in these factors may be mapped to subjective states of immersion in first-person shooter computer games.

    Abstract [en]

E-mail is a non-verbal text based communication tool that today is used widely in organizations and perhaps because of its familiarity seen as just a tool with no complications. Can other ingredients affect the communication except the obvious missing non-verbal cues? The main purpose of this thesis was to examine how leaders experience their communication between the different public administrations, but also to see if the text based communication, in particular e-mail, and was affected by organizational culture and emotions. Both a questionnaire, interviews and document analysis was used at a “Samordningsförbund” where the study was performed. The results indicated in general good communication between the individuals but also that emotions, personality and organizational culture can have an effect on communication and thus should be taken a more serious interest both in the actual “samordningsförbund” and also in further research, particularly e-mail in association with emotions and different personalities.

Skräckens många ansikten: Människans rädslor & skräckfilmen som filmgenre2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The horror genre is often the genre seen as the most extreme movie genre. It is the genre that many people consciously avoid. Probably because the genre offers everything another movie genre would not welcome, it tends to extend the boundaries. Why do you even take your time watching a horror movie and what can you possibly get out of it? Is the horror genre only made for scaring us, or can we actually get something good out of it? In this thesis, we’ve researched in how the film industry proceed making horror movies. How it in early times began with harmless movies and developed into today’s often more extreme movies that can confuse both your conscience and morality. Another thing we’ve focused on from a psychological perspective is the human general fears. This for trying to find out how the film industry modifies the horror to make us people as scared as we can be. Another question that we’ve been faced with is why some people do fear typical things but others don’t? What kind of fearfulness do we generally face through our lives? Monsters and other creepy creatures are a common sight in horror movies. In the text we explain the different ways a monster can take shape in and its background. What exactly is a monster? We’ve also made a research in the technique used when making a horror movie where we discuss the best ways for making effective horror and we’ve looked through typical elements in a horror movie and why they are used the way they are. Our research has led to a short film production. We’ve applied what we've learned about different kinds of fear, in an attempt to create our own horror movie. In the text we describe the decisions we made during the way and why we made them. The text ends in a discussion where we reflect on the result we got and the suggestions that did pop up on our way. Another important discussion in the ending of our text is how we think the future will look like for the horror genre based on our own thoughts and the research we’ve made. An interesting aspect is that the technology change, and so do our preferences, how will it affect the future?

It is desirable that people learn to describe the form and functions of Didactics. Any such description must spring from situations where the educator's planned method and sought contents build on experiences and competences which are founded on a shared design and shared completion of work. Paradoxically enough, co-operation on the didactic form and function of lessons influences learning processes with students as well as with educators.

Social Self in a Virtual World2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Individual and collective influences operate on construction of social self. There are also significant dialectic contradictions at work between constructing and experiencing of social self, be it by individual or collective influences. The human species is able to combine different but related processes for social and instrumental interaction by means of individual input to collective activity. It is, however, a bit of a mystery how the balancing process between activity, consciousness and personality materializes in ICT-contexts, by means of social support and in the shape of virtual agency. This study suggests a way of dealing with the features of collective virtual personality.

    Abstract [sv]

Can communicative problems between caregivers and patients with severe dementia be bridged by help from a close family member?2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Several studies have shown connections between personality and various kinds of behavioural and psychological symptoms in dementia. It has for example been found that personality traits such as introversion, rigidity, and a tendency to suppress emotions, as remembered retrospectively by a close family member, correlated positively with disturbed communicative behaviors in people with severe dementia. This finding indicates that personality characteristics should be considered in nursing care because they may help a caregiver to understand communicative attempts from a person not able to speak for themselves, i.e. express their feelings. Information from a next of kin about a sick person’s personality may help to bridge communicative gaps in care situations. However, the reliability of such information is not known. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the inter-rater agreement between healthy elderly people`s self-assessment and the assessment made by a next of kin concerning personality and Sense of Coherence (SOC). The participants (n=154) answered questions from the Eysenck personality scale and the Antonovsky SOC scale. The study shows high or moderate agreement in ratings when analysed by means of an intra-class correlation coefficient (range between r =.57 and r = .72) indicating that in general a close relative is able to report on the personality of a next of kin. The inter-rater agreement was high on SOC and Extraversion and somewhat lower on Neuroticism. For Neuroticism, length of time of relationship increased the odds for a good inter-rater agreement. Thus seemingly a next of kin is a reliable informant for the elderly in general and is probably also able to add information useful in the nursing care of people with a severe dementia disease.

The Motivating Suggestion System2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This case study investigates the suggestion system of a manufacturing plant with the purpose of getting insight about how a suggestion system should be designed to support the continuous improvement discipline Kaizen in the best way possible. The cooperating company has recently introduced Kaizen to the organization as part of a transaction toward lean production. The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews along with observations. The problem was approached from a motivational perspective, and a motivational framework has been created for this situation by combining research from the four motivation theories; Attribution theory, Social cognitive theory, Self-determination theory and Expectancy theory. The result from the study shows positive as well as negative aspects of the suggestion system at the factory that should be considered when designing a suggestion system that enhance the effect of Kaizen.

Energy metrics unique enough for smartphone-based video QoE evaluation?2012In: Dagstuhl Reports, Dagstuhl, Germany: Schloss Dagstuhl--Leibniz-Zentrum fuer Informatik , 2012, Vol. 2, no 5Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 12181 "Quality of Experience: From User Perception to Instrumental Metrics". As follow-up of the Dagstuhl Seminar 09192 "From Quality of Service to Quality of Experience", it focused on the further development of an agreed definition of the term Quality of Experience (QoE) in collaboration with the COST Action IC1003 "Qualinet", as well as inventories of possibilities to measure QoE (beyond the usual user polls) and to exploit feedback between users and systems that reflects QoE issues. The report furthermore describes the mode of work throughout the seminar, with focus on personal statements by the participants, results of the group works, and open challenges.

Studying the challenges in assessing the perceived quality of mobile-phone based video2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Evaluating video Quality of Experience (QoE) on a mobile phone has not yet been studied much. It is common that the data collected through user studies in mobile platform involves high fluctuation of user ratings without obvious reasons related to variation in network level. User disparity, user's various intermediate or previous experiences, video bitrate, and the objective measure of criticality are a few of the reasons that need to be identified with a well-designed user experiment. We present an experiment procedure to understand better the perceived quality of video in mobile platform. First, we investigate the reliability of the data, and identify unreliable users. Then, we investigate the psychological influence factors of previous experiences on the recent perceived quality known as the memory effect, and the influence of the bitrate on the time it takes for users to react and evaluate the video quality, i.e., user response time.

Medical Professionals ethical perceptions on the marketing of reproduction services2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the medical professionals’ ethical perceptions of sperm bank marketing. This study was performed by using the ethical decision-making modified model developed by Hunt and Vitell (2006) to understand and interpret the medical professionals’ ethical perceptions which sperm banks encounter when marketing themselves. The main ethical issues that emerged in this study were: Should sperm donors be anonymous or non-anonymous? Should donors get paid or should it be solely altruistic? How shall sperm-banks select and how much should they screen the donors? Should sperm banks be commercialized? By examining these issues from the medical professionals’ ethical perceptions, the study shows that commercial sperm banks do not market themselves ethically. However findings show that commercial sperm banks should still be an option for infertile couples.

Design and Evaluation of Affective Serious Games for Emotion Regulation Training2013Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Emotions are thought to be a key factor that critically influences human decision-making. Emotion regulation can help to mitigate emotion related decision biases and eventually lead to a better decision performance. Serious games emerged as a new angle introducing technological methods to learning emotion regulation, where meaningful biofeedback information displays player's emotional state. This thesis investigates emotions and the effect of emotion regulation on decision performance. Furthermore, it explores design and evaluation methods for creating serious games where emotion regulation can be learned and practiced. The scope of this thesis was limited to serious games for emotion regulation training using psychophysiological methods to communicate user's affective information. Using the psychophysiological methods, emotions and their underlying neural mechanism have been explored. Through design and evaluation of serious games using those methods, effects of emotion regulation have been investigated where decision performance has been measured and analyzed. The proposed metrics for designing and evaluating such affective serious games have been exhaustively evaluated. The research methods used in this thesis were based on both quantitative and qualitative aspects, with true experiment and evaluation research, respectively. Serious games approach to emotion regulation was investigated. The results suggested that two different emotion regulation strategies, suppression and cognitive reappraisal, are optimal for different decision tasks contexts. With careful design methods, valid serious games for training those different strategies could be produced. Moreover, using psychophysiological methods, underlying emotion neural mechanism could be mapped to provide optimal level of arousal for a certain task. The results suggest that it is possible to design and develop serious game applications that provide helpful learning environment where decision makers could practice emotion regulation and subsequently improve their decision making.
