    Abstract [en]

    We examine the impact of multiple primary transmitters and receivers (PU-TxRx) on the outage performance of cognitive decode-and-forward relay networks. In such a joint relaying/spectrum-sharing arrangement, we address fundamental questions concerning three key power constraints: 1) maximum transmit power at the secondary transmitter (SU-Tx), 2) peak interference power at the primary receivers (PU-Rx), and 3) interference power at SU-Rx caused by the primary transmitter (PU-Tx). Our answers to these are given in new analytical expressions for the exact and asymptotic outage probability of the secondary relay network. Based on our asymptotic expressions, important design insights into the impact of primary transceivers on the performance of cognitive relay networks is reached. We have shown that zero diversity order is attained when the peak interference power at the PU-Rx is independent of the maximum transmit power at the SU-TX.

    Abstract [en]

    A new design method for broadband microphone arrays is presented. Using sequences of calibration signals, the method is able to design finite-impulse response (FIR) filters with specific performance. The method can control and adjust the speech distortion, noise suppression, and echo cancellation directly. It turns out that a significantly shorter filter length can be applied to achieve better overall performance than the least-squares method or the signal-to-noise plus interference method.

    The multi-mode mean field annealing (MM-MFA) approach is introduced as an efficient tool to design digital filters with discrete coefficients, each implemented as a sum of signed power-of-two terms, and additional general hardware constraints. As an application example demonstrating the potential of the new method we consider the design of a linear phase non-recursive (FIR) filter with a least squares criterion and minimum number of power-of-two terms.

    Abstract [en]

    In this letter, we investigate the effect of feedback delay on the performance of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network with beamforming in the presence of multiple interferers over Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the symbol error rate (SER). Furthermore, to render insights into the effect of feedback delay and interference on the network performance, asymptotic OP and SER are also presented. These asymptotic expressions are very tight in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime, readily enabling us to obtain the diversity and coding gains of the considered network.

    This letter aims at complementing previous empirical work regarding a certain beamforming technique for blind speech extraction that uses a local quadratic approximation of a Kurtosis expression. It is shown here that the proposed method possesses a fixed-point property which means that it remains at an optimal solution once this solution has been reached. The proposed method's fixed-point property is valid for a range of source signals including Gaussian sources. This is an improvement over the FastICA method which diverges at the optimal points that correspond to a Gaussian source. In a real application, it cannot be assured that non-Gaussian mixtures are constantly observed; hence, the proposed method is a viable alternative in that case. The fixed-point property further implies that the approximative Kurtosis expression is identical to the true Kurtosis value at an optimal point which, in turn, means that the approximation error is zero. In addition, the convergence towards an optimal solution is always in the direction of a local minimum point even though the optimal solution that correspond to a super-Gaussian source is always a maximum solution which harmonizes with the concept of Kurtosis maximization.

    Abstract [en]

    Subband adaptive filters have been proposed to avoid the drawbacks of slow convergence and high computational complexity associated with time domain adaptive filters. However, subband processing causes signal degradations due to aliasing effects and amplitude distortions. This problem is unavoidable due to further filtering operations in subbands. In this letter, the problems of aliasing effect and amplitude distortion are studied. Prototype filters which are optimized with respect to those properties are designed and their performances are compared. Moreover, the effect of the number of subbands, the oversampling factors and the length of the prototype filter are also studied. Using the multicriteria formulation, all Pareto optimums are sought via the nonlinear programming technique. We find that the prototype filter designed via the Kaiser window provides the best overall performance among the methods we studied. Also, there is a critical oversampling factor beyond which the improvement of performance is diminishing. Finally, if the length of the prototype filter increases with the number of subbands, an increase in the number of subbands will not deteriorate the performance.
