The profession of research management and administration in Sweden2023In: The Emerald Handbook of Research Management and Administration Around the World / [ed] Simon Kerridge, Susi Poli, Mariko Yang-Yoshihara, Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2023, p. 751-757Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter outlines the development of the Swedish Higher Education System that led to the evolution of the profession of research management and administration (RMA) in Sweden. Evolution from an informal network towards more formalised and structured work within the Swedish RMA community is highlighted. Discussion on the level of salaries development depending on the education level, gender, experience and roles are elaborated too. The majority of the Swedish RMA community are women, which does not differ from most other RMA communities around the world. Swedish Association of Research Managers and Administrators (SWARMA) is the bridge between national research and innovation funding agencies and researchers. SWARMA selected members actively participate in the reference groups for EU R&I programmes. The future for RMAs in Sweden looks bright!. © 2024 by Eva-Lisa Ahnstrom, Evelina Brannvall, Ylva Hultman and Anders Jonsson. All rights reserved.

    Abstract [en]

Finding experts in academics is an important practical problem, e.g. recruiting reviewersfor reviewing conference, journal or project submissions, partner matching for researchproposals, finding relevant M. Sc. or Ph. D. supervisors etc. In this work, we discuss anexpertise recommender system that is built on data extracted from the Blekinge Instituteof Technology (BTH) instance of the institutional repository system DiVA (DigitalScientific Archive). DiVA is a publication and archiving platform for research publicationsand student essays used by 46 publicly funded universities and authorities in Sweden andthe rest of the Nordic countries (www.diva-portal.org). The DiVA classification system isbased on the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) and the Statistic Sweden's (SCB)three levels classification system. Using the classification terms associated with studentM. Sc. and B. Sc. theses published in the DiVA platform, we have developed a prototypesystem which can be used to identify and recommend subject thesis supervisors inacademy.

Social Shaping of Digital Publishing: Exploring the Interplay Between Culture and Technology - Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Electronic Publishing2012Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Since the advent of the Web, the processes and forms of electronic publishing have been changing. The open access movement has been a major driver of change in recent years with regard to scholarly communication; however, changes are also evident in other fields of application such as e-government and e-learning. In most cases these changes are driven by technological advances, but there are also cases where a change in social reality pushes technological development. Both the social and mobile web and linked data are currently shaping the edge of research in digital publishing. Liquid publishing is on the more daring agendas. Digital preservation is an issue that poses great challenges which are still far from being solved. The legal issues, security and trust continue to deserve our full attention. We need new visualization techniques and innovative interfaces that will keep pace with the global dimension of information. This is the current scenario, but what will follow? What are the technologies and social and communication paradigms that we will be discussing in ten or twenty years? ELPUB 2012 focuses on the social shaping of digital publishing, exploring the interplay between culture and technology. This makes the fact that it is being held in the European Capital of Culture for 2012, Guimarães, Portugal, all the more appropriate. 52 submissions were received for ELPUB 2012, from which 23 articles and 10 posters were accepted after peer review. Of the accepted articles, 11 were submitted as full articles and 12 as extended abstracts. These articles have been grouped into sessions on the following topics: Sessions 1 and 4 – Digital Scholarship & Publishing; Session 2 – Special Archives; Session 3 – Libraries & Repositories, Session 5 – Digital Texts & Readings, and Session 6 – Future Solutions & Innovations. The programme features two keynote speeches. Kathleen Fitzpatrick's speech is entitled “Planned Obsolescence: Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy”, that of Antonio Câmara is entitled “Publishing in 2021”. Finally we call your attention to the panel on e-books, which is entitled “Academic e-books – Technological hostage or cultural redeemer?”. We believe this is another great edition of the ELPUB conference. We would like to take this opportunity to thank both the members of the ELPUB executive committee and the members of the local advisory committee, for making it happen. Together they provided valuable advice and assistance during the entire organization process. Secondly we would like to mention our colleagues on the program committee, who assured the quality of the conference through the peer review process. Last but not least, we wish to thank the local organization team for ensuring that all this effort culminates in a very interesting scientific event on the 14th and 15th of June. Thank you all for helping us to maintain the quality of ELPUB and merit the trust of our authors and attendees. We wish you all a good conference and we say farewell, hoping to see you again in Sweden in 2013!

    Infrastructure and technology challenges2014Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this deliverable, we report on our work on infrastructural and technological barriers to Open Access and preservation of research data as identified by key stakeholder groups. Through a mix of qualitative, quantitative and document review methods, we identified five key barriers to successfully implementing Open Access to research data in Europe: data heterogeneity and issues of standardisation; accessibility and discoverability issues; data preservation and curation; data quality and assessability; and data security. We explore these issues in detail and present existing good practice, and technical and infrastructural solutions used to mitigate such barriers. This work was conducted within the EU FP7 funded project RECODE, which focuses on developing policy recommendations for Open Access to Research Data in Europe. In particular, this work is coordinated by RECODE Work Package 2 (WP2), Infrastructure and technology.

    Abstract [en]

The following describes a digitalization and on-line publication project, led by members of Blekinge Institute of Technology, located in the south of Sweden. The project aimed to create the foundation for a regional network of small cultural institutions that would develop, support and utilize on-line full text archives in the service of tourism, marketing and education. Its pilot project, The Chapman Archive, involved the digitalization, encoding with the TEI DTD in XML and web-publication of two rare 18th century texts of both regional and international importance.

Teaching International Students How to Avoid Plagiarism: Librarians and Faculty in Collaboration2014In: The journal of academic librarianship, ISSN 0099-1333, E-ISSN 1879-1999, Vol. 40, no 3/4Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents how a plagiarism component has been integrated in a Research Methodology course for Engineering Master students at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden. The plagiarism issue was approached from an educational perspective, rather than a punitive. The course director and librarians developed this part of the course in close collaboration. One part of the course is dedicated to how to cite, paraphrase and reference, while another part stresses the legal and ethical aspects of research. Currently, the majority of the students are international, which means there are intercultural and language aspects to consider. In order to evaluate our approach to teaching about plagiarism, we conducted a survey. The results of the survey indicate a need for education on how to cite and reference properly in order to avoid plagiarism, a result which is also supported by students' assignment results. Some suggestions are given for future development of the course.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Bottom(s) up to a top down approach2006In: ScieCom Info, E-ISSN 1652-3202, no 1Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

It is comparatively easy to build and structure an institutional repository. The difficulty lies in filling it with content. This very trivial observation is not uncommon among repository administrators and I certainly agree. At Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) we have followed a Bottom up approach, which now, almost ten years later, hopefully will lead to a Top down policy. The two strategies complement each other and maybe a two-front approach can be part of an answer on how to get submissions going.

Digital Libraries: a challenge for Medical Research and Education2006In: Applied Research in Health and Social Sciences:Interface and Interaction, ISSN 1822-3338, Vol. 1, no 2, p. 92-98Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the early 1990s Digital Libraries have become a major factor for collecting, organising and distributing scientific research. This is especially true in the biomedical sciences. In this article, different definitions of the term Digital Libraries are discussed. Two major definitions are dwelled upon: one emerging from the library world and the other from the world of scientific research. Librarians tend to speak for a broader definition of the term “Library”. They see a library as an organisation that secures the selection, conservation, organisation, preservation and the access to information that is vital for the members of the specific organisation. Researchers most often favour a narrower definition of the library concept. For them a library could be any room containing a smaller or bigger amount of books or data discs or tape cassettes. Researchers seldom care for the social and institutional context of the term “Library”. Their emphasis is tilted towards databases and how to collect, retrieve, organise and access the information. Future use, development and problems of Digital Libraries, their content, users and their staffing are discussed. For example, the technical issues which include the problem with standards and protocols. To bring the distributed variety of digital resources and services together in a way that allow for integration and unified search, retrieval and presentation is a great challenge for the future. So is the problem of transferring personalised service and support from standard library and information services to the digital library. A user interface can hardly replace person to person service but better user interfaces must be developed and researched in order to help users. The future digital library will go beyond helping the user with searching and browsing only. They must be able to expect support for taking correct actions and getting help for problem solving where the digital library system confirm or deny existing hypotheses. Content management technologies will be the big thing of the future. The increasing amount of digital content will see to that. Semantic web technologies will probably add important features to digital libraries like semantic interoperability, better browsing, searching and filtering capabilities and delegating routine tasks of cataloguing, metadata annotation etc to automated agents. Simple algorithms and brute computing power will make your local librarian rarer and rarer. Another fact that also point in that direction is that one of the major costs for classic libraries are staff, facilities and materials, in that order. The future digital library more or less depend on materials only. Now and in the future computers can rank and find documents, they can evaluate, make citation analysis, they can extract references from a document and link them to the full text source (SFX). Better ways of extracting and inserting meta data are under development. The low cost of these operations are bringing medical research to new audiences. The challenge for medical research and digital libraries of the future is to handle the increasing automisation of the research sources in a way that makes these resources manageable and available to a broader audience. This certainly can not be done without the specialist librarian working as an interface between the machine and the customer. Digital libraries and resources in the Medical field comes in many shapes. A few good examples of what is available today as Open Access on the Internet is presented like Bioline International, BioMed Central, Public Library of Science (PLOS) etc.

Droger och diktare2021Book (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]
