What is the word for engineering in Swedish: students conception of their discipline2007Other (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Engineering education in Sweden as in the rest of the world is experiencing a decline in student interest. There are concerns about the ways in which students think about engineering education, why they join an academic programme in engineering, and why they persist in their studies. In this context the aims of the Nationellt ämnesdidaktiskt Centrum för Teknikutbildning i Studenternas Sammanhang project (CeTUSS) is to investigate the student experience and to identify and support a continuing network of interested researchers, as well as in building capacity for disciplinary pedagogic investigation. The Stepping Stones project brings together these interests in a multi-researcher, multi-institutional study that investigates how students and academic staff perceive engineering in Sweden and in Swedish education. The first results of that project are reported here. As this study is situated uniquely in Swedish education, it allows for exploration of a Swedish perspective on conceptions of engineering. The Stepping Stones project was based on a model of research capacity-building previously instantiated in the USA and Australia (Fincher & Tenenberg, 2006).

Det förebyggande arbetet mot vårdrelaterade infektioner2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Performance analysis of different adapative algorithms based on acoustic echo cancellation2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In modern telecommunication systems like hands-free and teleconferencing systems, the problem arise during conversation is the creation of an acoustic echo. This problem degrades the quality of the information signal. All speech processing equipments like noise cancelling headphones and hearing aids should be able to filter different kinds of interfering signals and produce a clear sound to the listener. Currently, echo cancellation is a most interesting and challenging task in any communication system. Echo is the delayed and degraded version of original signal which travels back to its source after several reflections. Eliminating this effect without affecting the original quality of the speech is a challenge of research in present days. Echo cancellation in voice communication is a process of removing the echo to improve the clarity and quality of the voice signals. In our thesis we mainly focused on the acoustic echo cancellation in a closed room using adaptive filters. The Acoustic echo cancellation with adaptive filtering technique will more accurately enhance the speech quality in hands free communication systems. The main aim of using adaptive algorithms for echo cancellation is to achieve higher ERLE at higher rate of convergence with low complexity. The adaptive algorithms NLMS, APA and RLS are implemented using MATLAB. These algorithms are tested with the simulation of echo occurring environment by using constant room dimensions , microphone and source positions. The performance of the NLMS, APA and RLS are evaluated in terms ERLE and misalignment. The results show that RLS algorithm achieve good performance with more computational complexity comparing with the NLMS and APA algorithms. The NLMS algorithm has very low computational complexity comparing to RLS and APA algorithms. The results are taken for both input signal as speech signal and noise separately and plotted in the results section.

APPLYING LEAN PRINCIPLES FOR PERFORMANCE ORIENTED SERVICE DESIGN OF VIRTUAL NETWORK FUNCTIONS FOR NFV INFRASTRUCTURE: Concepts of Lean2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. Network Function Virtualization was recently proposed by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to improve the network service flexibility by virtualization of network services and applications that run on hardware. To virtualize network functions, the software is decoupled from underlying physical hardware. NFV aims to transform industries by reducing capital investments on hardware by using commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. NFV makes rapid innovative growth in telecom services through software based service deployment.

Objectives. This thesis work aims to investigate how business organizations function and the roles in defining a service relationship model. The work also aims to define a service relationship model and to validate it via proof of concept using network function virtualization as a service. For this thesis, we finally apply lean principles for the defined service relationship model to reduce waste and investigate how lean benefits the model to be proven as performance service oriented.

Methods. The essence of this work is to make a business organization lean by investigating its actions and applying lean principles. To elaborate, this thesis work involves in a research of papers from IEEE, TMF, IETF and Ericsson. It results in modelling of a PoC by following requirement analysis methodology and by applying lean principles to eliminate unnecessary processes which doesn’t add any value.

Results. The results of the work include a full-fledged service relationship model that include three service levels with roles that can fit in to requirement specifications of NFV infrastructure. The results also show the service levels functionalities and their relationships between the roles. It has also been observed that the services that are needed to be standardized are defined with syntax for ways to describe network functions. It is observed that lean principles benefit the service relationship model from reducing waste factors and hereby providing a PoC which is performance service oriented.

Conclusions. We conclude that roles defined are fit for the service relationship model designed. Moreover, we conclude that the model can hence contain the flow of service by standardizing the subservices and reducing waste interpreted with lean principles and there is a need for further use case proof of the model in full scale industry trials. It also concludes the ways to describe network functions syntax which follows lean principles that are essential to have them for the sub-services standardization. However, PoC defined can be an assurance to the NFV infrastructure.

Moving beyond the language–Visualizing chemical concepts through one’s own creative expression2022In: Frontiers in Education, E-ISSN 2504-284X, Vol. 7, article id 1034140Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to explore university students’ interpretations of chemical content in the form of physical constructions of atomic nuclei. Playdough was chosen as the means for expression, since it provided the students with the task of choosing the number, form, size, shape, and distance of particles. Data was collected in the form of photographs, written explanations as well as ad hoc notes. Data from 64 students was analyzed using the three levels of analysis as presented by Hedegaard and framed within the theories of models. Results show that students’ choices gave rise to 34 variations of the atomic nuclei. The analysis provided two different categories: models with close resemblance to the teaching model and models with less resemblance to the teaching model. Results show the limitations of verbal and written communication and add to the discussion concerning students’ interpretations of the multitude of atomic models used in teaching. The method was indeed a beneficial tool both for students, who could explore the composition of atomic nuclei and isotopes, and for teachers, who could connect their teaching to students’ interpretations of scientific content since the method brings a new level of detail to discussions. Effect of Codec Performance on Video QoE for videos encoded with Xvid, H.264 and WebM/VP82014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, there has been a significant growth in multimedia services such as mobile video streaming, Video-on-Demand and video conferencing. This has led to the development of various video coding techniques, aiming to deliver high quality video while using available bandwidth efficiently. This upsurge in the usage of video applications has also resulted in making endusers more quality-conscious. In order to meet the users’ expectations, the Quality of Experience (QoE) studies has gained utmost importance from both researchers and service providers. This thesis aims to compare the performance of H.264/AVC, Xvid and WebM/VP8 video codecs in wired and wireless networks. The codec performance is evaluated for different packet loss and delay variation values. The evaluation of codec performance is done using both subjective and objective assessment methods. In subjective assessment method, the evaluation of video codec performance is done using ITU-T recommended Absolute Category Rating (ACR) method. Using this method the perceptual video quality ratings are taken from the users, which are then averaged to obtain Mean Opinion Score. These obtained scores are used to analyze the performance of encoded videos with respect to users’ perception. In addition to subjective assessment method, the quality of encoded video is also measured using objective assessment method. The objective metric SSIM (Structural Similarity) is used to evaluate the performance of encoded videos. Based on the results, it was found that for lower packet loss and delay variation values H.264 showed better results when compared to Xvid and WebM/VP8 whereas, WebM/VP8 outperformed Xvid and H.264 for higher packet loss and delay variation values. On the whole, H.264 and WebM/VP8 performed better than Xvid. It was also found that all three video codecs performed better in wired network when compared to the wireless network.

Performance Assessment of Networked Immersive Media in Mobile Health Applications with Emphasis on Latency2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Cloud VR/AR/MR (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality) services representa high-level architecture that combines large scale computer resources in a data-center structurestyle set up to render VR/AR/MR services using a combination of very high bandwidth, ultralow latency, high throughput, latest 5G (5th Generation) mobile networks to the end users.

VR refers to a three-dimensional computer-generated virtual environment made up ofcomputers, which can be explored by people for real time interaction. AR amplifies humanperception of the real world through overlapping of computer-generated graphics or interactivedata on a real-world image for enhanced experience.

According to the Virtual Reality Society’s account of the history of VR, it started from the360-degree murals from the nineteenth century [18]. Historically, live application of AR wasdisplayed when Myron Kruger used a combination of video cameras and projector in aninteractive environment in 1974. In 1998, AR was put into live display with the casting of avirtual yellow line marker during an NFL game. However, personal, and commercial use ofVR/AR was made possible starting with release of a DIY (Do it Yourself) headset calledGoogle Cardboard in 2014 by Google, which made use of a smartphone for the VR experience. In 2014, Samsung also introduced Gear VR which officially started the competition for VRdevices. Subsequently In 2014, Facebook acquired Oculus VR with the major aim ofdominating the high-end spectrum of VR headset [18]. Furthermore, wider adoption of ARbecame enhanced with the introduction of Apple’s ARKit (Augmented Reality Kit) whichserves as a development framework for AR applications for iPhones and iPads [18].

The first application of VR devices in the health industry was made possible due to healthworkers’ need to visualize complex medical data during surgery and planning of surgery in1994. Since then, commercial production of VR devices and availability of advanced networkand faster broadband have increased the adoption of VR services in the healthcare industryespecially in planning of surgery and during surgery itself [16]. Overall, the wide availabilityof VR/AR terminals, displays, controllers, development kits, advanced network, and robustbandwidth have contributed to making VR and AR services to be of valuable and importanttechnologies in the area of digital entertainment, information, games, health, military and soon. However, the solutions or services needed for the technology required an advancedprocessing platform which in most cases is not cost efficient in single-use scenarios.

The kind of devices, hardware, software required for the processing and presentation ofimmersive experiences is often expensive and dedicated to the current application itself.Technological improvement in realism and immersion means increase in cost of ownershipwhich often affected cost-benefit consideration, leading to slower adoption of the VR services[14] [15]. This is what has led to development of cloud VR services, a form of data-centerbased system, which serves as a means of providing VR services to end users from the cloudanywhere in the world, using its fast and stable transport networks. The content of the VR isstored in the cloud, after which the output in form of audio-visuals is coded and compressedusing suitable encoding technology, and thereafter transmitted to the terminals. The industrywide acceptance of the cloud VR services, and technology has made available access to payper-use-basis and hence access to high processing capability offered, which is used in iipresenting a more immersive, imaginative, and interactive experience to end users [11] [12].However, cloud VR services has a major challenge in form of network latency introduced fromcloud rendering down to the display terminal itself. This is most often caused by otherperformance indicators such as network bandwidth, coding technology, RTT (Return TripTime) and so on [19]. This is the major problem which this thesis is set to find out.

The research methodology used was a combination of empirical and experimental method, using quantitative approach as it entails the generation of data in quantitative form availablefor quantitative analysis. The research questions are:

Research Question 1 (RQ1): What are the latency related performance indicators ofnetworked immersive media in mobile health applications?

Research Question 2 (RQ2): What are the suitable network structures to achieve an efficientlow latency VR health application?

The answers gotten from the result analysis at the end of the simulation, show thatbandwidth, frame rate, and resolution are very crucial performance indicator to achieve theoptimal latency required for hitch-free cloud VR user experience, while the importance of otherindicators such as resolution and coding standard cannot be overemphasized. Combination ofedge and cloud architecture also proved to more efficient and effective for the achievement ofa low-latency cloud VR application functionality.

Conclusively, the answer to research question one was that, the latency relatedperformance indicators of networked immersive media in mobile health applications arebandwidth, frame rate, resolution, coding technology. For research question two, suitablenetwork structures includes edge network, cloud network and combination of cloud and edgenetwork, but in order to achieve an optimally low-latency network for cloud VR mobile healthapplication in education, combination of edge and cloud network architecture is recommended

Impact of Packet Losses on the Quality of Video Streaming2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, the impact of packet losses on the quality of received videos sent across a network that exhibit normal network perturbations such as jitters, delays, packet drops etc has been examined. Dynamic behavior of a normal network has been simulated using Linux and the Network Emulator (NetEm). Peoples’ perceptions on the quality of the received video were used in rating the qualities of several videos with differing speeds. In accordance with ITU’s guideline of using Mean Opinion Scores (MOS), the effects of packet drops were analyzed. Excel and Matlab were used as tools in analyzing the peoples’ opinions which indicates the impacts that different loss rates has on the transmitted videos. Statistical methods used for evaluation of data are mean and variance. We conclude that people have convergence of opinions when losses become extremely high on videos with highly variable scene changes

Analytical and Experimental Vibration Analysis of Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composite Beam2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this work is to investigate analytical and experimental vibration of composite beam. The composite beam is used as composite footbridge model prototype which is assumed. For the dynamic test, hammer excitation is used to excite the beam at fixed locations. The modal parameters are extracted from the time response using a time domain analysis, i.e. the stochastic subspace identification technique. Finite element models for different boundary conditions are constructed using the commercial finite element software package ANSYS for natural frequencies of the beam to support and verify the dynamic measurements. The result obtained from analytical solution, dynamic tests and the FEM are presented and analysed.

Heavy vehicle B2B marketing and impact of culture: a comparison case study of Volvo and Scania in Thailand2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Many Automobile companies from the developed countries are moving to Asia as the market potential in these countries is dimishing and cost of production is cheaper. Although there is a larger market potential in Asian countries, each automible company needs to attract potential customers with the ultimate goal of retaining them. A case study based on interviews was carried out at Volvo and Scania subsidiaries in Thailand to investigate the role culture play in business-to-business marketing when companies move to a country with a different culture. As the way of work in Thailand and Sweden is different, culture impact is researched in the area of relational marketing, sales forecast and market survey, market segmentation and business marketing communication with focus on the B2B marketing. Finally we perform analysis to identify what is necessary for the companies to adopt in regards to cultural with the aim of retaining and gaining market share. The analysis is based on empirical data collected during interview with employees of the two companies.

How External Forces are influencing the Ebusiness strategy of MTN-Nigeria2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Internet and e-business has had enormous impact on many companies in Nigeria and there has been much research on how e-business influences the environment, but little can be found on how the environment of a developing country like Nigeria influences e-business. In e-business, technology tells the business what can be done in smarter ways. Technology not only can make business more efficient but also can make business more effective in targeting and reaching markets, however technology cannot enhance business in isolation as there are other vital factors that equally impact business. This thesis presents an adapted version of the PESTEL (Political, Economic, Socio cultural, Technology, Environment, and Legal) framework so called e-business PESTEL framework, as a method for structural analysis of macro environment forces in the future. In addition to this PESTEL framework, the Porter’s five forces model was employed to analyse the industrial forces that also influence MTNN e-business strategy. The main goal of this research is to give an overview of industry and macro-environment forces influencing the e-business strategy MTN-Nigeria and the impact of future developments. The research methodology was explorative and descriptive. A further method for future analysis of the macro-environments influences and a suggestion on how to incorporate it in this research work is given. The e-business strategy of MTNN consists of four areas: E-procurement, E-collaboration (CRM), Supply chain management and E-commerce. The influences found on macro-environments level are political and sociocultural forces and in the industry levels are bargaining power of customers and suppliers of its products and services .The most recommendations are that MTN-Nigeria should add e-business PESTEL framework described in this thesis to its e-business strategy check. Furthermore MTNN should include environment analysis more extensively in their e-business strategy approach as the factors in this research work shape the environment in which it carries out its business.

Evaluation of the FDI Chairside Guide for Assessment of Periodontal Conditions: A Multicentre Observational Study2021In: International Dental Journal, ISSN 0020-6539, E-ISSN 1875-595X, Vol. 71, no 5, p. 390-398Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: There is a need to develop easy-to-use tools to screen periodontal condition in daily practice. This study aimed to evaluate the FDI World Dental Federation “Chairside Guide” (FDI-CG) developed by the Task Team of the FDI Global Periodontal Health Project (GPHP) as a potential tool for screening. Methods: Databases from 3 centres in Germany, Hong Kong, and Spain (n = 519) were used to evaluate the association of the FDI-CG and its individual items with the periodontitis case definitions proposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) for population-based surveillance of periodontitis. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed among the databases for the prevalence of periodontitis and the items included in the FDI-CG. The FDI-CG score and its individual components were significantly associated with the periodontal status in the individual databases and the total sample, with bleeding on probing showing the strongest association with severe periodontitis (odds ratio [OR] = 12.9, 95% CI [5.9; 28.0], P < .001, for those presenting bleeding on probing >50%), followed by age (OR = 4.8, 95% CI [1.7; 4.2], P = .004, for those older than 65 years of age). Those subjects with a FDI-CG score >10 had an OR of 54.0 (95% CI [23.5; 124.2], P < .001) and presented with severe periodontitis. A significant correlation was found between the different FDI-CG scoring categories (mild, moderate, and severe) and the categories for mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Periodontology criteria (r = 0.57, Spearman rank correlation test, P < .001). Conclusion: The FDI Chairside Guide may represent a suitable tool for screening the periodontal condition by general practitioners in daily dental practice. © 2020 The Authors

Patienters upplevelser av mötet med akutsjukvården2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Scaling-up Impact: Knowledge-based Organizations Working Toward Sustainability2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Human society faces serious environmental and social threats as a result of systemic unsustainable actions and values. This is a time of cultural self-evaluation and profound change. This study examines how 13 social and environmental change-based organizations, through network partnerships and a robust organizational knowledge-base, are responding to these challenges. A systems perspective was used as a guide to promote a holistic understanding of the actors within the system, their perceptions of success, strategies, actions and tools used to guide them toward sustainability. The results indicate that organizations seeking to scale-up their impact toward sustainability might benefit from the following success factors: 1. Collaboration with diverse partners to contribute to more effective interventions in complex systems, 2. Integrating comprehensive definitions of sustainability with organizational vision to facilitate success, 3. The application of leverage points and transparent prioritization processes to asure congruence between organizational purpose and actions, 4. Practices of dialogue and deep listening build rewarding partnerships and, 5. Metrics that support partnerships and gauge progress toward sustainability. In conclusion network partnerships have the potential to generate widespread sustained change and can be supported by complex systems science and a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development.

    Abstract [sv]

The effect of different mouth rinse products on intra-oral halitosis2016In: International Journal of Dental Hygiene, ISSN 1601-5029, E-ISSN 1601-5037, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 117-123Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To evaluate the effect of different mouth rinses 12 h after rinsing on genuine intra-oral halitosis. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four adults with halitosis were included in a double-blind, crossover, randomized clinical trial. Halitosis was evaluated 12 h after rinsing with placebo and five mouth rinse products containing zinc acetate and chlorhexidine diacetate; zinc lactate, chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride; zinc acetate and chlorhexidine diacetate with reduced amounts of mint and menthol; zinc chloride and essential oil; and chlorine dioxide using the organoleptic method and a gas chromatograph. Test periods were separated by 1 week. Results: Hydrogen sulphide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (MM) and the organoleptic scores (OLS) were significantly reduced 12 h following rinsing with all substances compared to placebo (P < 0.05). H2S was more effectively reduced after rinsing with zinc acetate and chlorhexidine diacetate and zinc acetate and chlorhexidine diacetate with reduced amounts of mint and menthol compared to rinsing with zinc chloride and essential oil (P < 0.05), and significantly lower values of MM were obtained after rinsing with zinc acetate and chlorhexidine diacetate compared to zinc lactate, chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride (P < 0.05). The percentage effectively treated individuals (H2S (<112 ppb), MM (<26 ppb) and OLS score <2) varied from 58% percentage (zinc acetate and chlorhexidine diacetate) to 26% (zinc chloride and essential oil). Conclusion: All treatments resulted in reduction in halitosis 12 h after rinsing compared to placebo. H2S and MM were most effectively reduced by zinc acetate and chlorhexidine diacetate.

Comparison of different treatment modalities for oral halitosis2012In: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850, Vol. 70, no 3, p. 224-233Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives. To assess the effects on intra-oral halitosis by a mouth rinse containing zinc acetate (0.3%) and chlorhexidine diacetate (0.025%) with and without adjunct tongue scraping. Materials and methods. Twenty-one subjects without a diagnosis of periodontitis were randomized in a cross-over clinical trial. Organoleptic scores (OLS) were assessed to define intra-oral halitosis by total volatile sulfur compound (T-VSC) measurements and by gas chromatography. Results. Twenty-one subjects with a mean age of 45.7 years (SD: +/- 13.3, range: 21-66). The OLS were significantly lower following active rinse combined with tongue scraping (p < 0.001) at all time points. Immediately after, at 30 min, and at day 14, the T-VSC values were lower in the active rinse sequence than in the negative rinse sequence (p < 0.001, p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively). At 30 min and at day 14, the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methyl mercaptan (MM) values were lower in the active rinse sequence compared to the inactive rinse sequence (p < 0.001). The inactive rinse sequence with tongue scraping reduced T-VSC at 30 min (p < 0.001) but not at 14 days. Similar reductions in T-VSC, H2S and MM were found in the active rinse sequence with or without tongue scraping. Conclusion. The use of a tongue scraper did not provide additional benefits to the active mouth rinse, but reduced OLS and tongue coating index.

The effect of periodontal therapy on intra-oral halitosis: a case series2016In: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, ISSN 0303-6979, E-ISSN 1600-051X, Vol. 43, no 5, p. 445-452Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy on intra-oral halitosis 3months after therapy. Material and methods: Sixty-eight adults with intra-oral halitosis were included in a case series. Intra-oral halitosis was evaluated at baseline, and at 3months after treatment using the organoleptic scores (OLS), Halimeter (R), and a gas chromatograph. Results: Significant reductions for OLS (p<0.01), total sum of volatile sulphur compounds (T-VSC) (p<0.01) and methyl mercaptan (MM) (p<0.05) values were found after treatment. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) levels were not significantly reduced. The numbers of probing pockets 4mm, 5mm and 6mm were significantly reduced as a result of therapy (p<0.001). Bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque indices were also significantly reduced (p<0.001). For the 34 individuals with successful periodontal treatment (BOP<20% and a 50% reduction of total pocket depth) reductions in OLS (p<0.01) and T-VSC scores (p<0.01) were found. Eleven individuals were considered effectively treated for intra-oral halitosis presenting with a T-VSC value <160ppb, a H2S value <112ppb and a MM value <26ppb. Conclusion: Non-surgical periodontal therapy resulted in reduction of OLS, MM and T-VSC values 3months after therapy. Few individuals were considered as effectively treated for intra-oral halitosis.

The short-term treatment effects on the microbiota at the dorsum of the tongue in intra-oral halitosis patients-a randomized clinical trial2013In: Clinical Oral Investigations, ISSN 1432-6981, E-ISSN 1436-3771, Vol. 17, no 2, p. 463-473Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to assess the effects of rinsing with zinc- and chlorhexidine-containing mouth rinse with or without adjunct tongue scraping on volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in breath air, and the microbiota at the dorsum of the tongue. Material and methods: A randomized single-masked controlled clinical trial with a cross-over study design over 14 days including 21 subjects was performed. Bacterial samples from the dorsum of the tongue were assayed by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization. Results: No halitosis (identified by VSC assessments) at day 14 was identified in 12/21 subjects with active rinse alone, in 10/21with adjunct use of tongue scraper, in 1/21 for negative control rinse alone, and in 3/21 in the control and tongue scraping sequence. At day 14, significantly lower counts were identified only in the active rinse sequence (p < 0.001) for 15/78 species including, Fusobacterium sp., Porphyromonas gingivalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Tannerella forsythia. A decrease in bacteria from baseline to day 14 was found in successfully treated subjects for 9/74 species including: P. gingivalis, Prevotella melaninogenica, S. aureus, and Treponema denticola. Baseline VSC scores were correlated with several bacterial species. The use of a tongue scraper combined with active rinse did not change the levels of VSC compared to rinsing alone. Conclusions: VSC scores were not associated with bacterial counts in samples taken from the dorsum of the tongue. The active rinse alone containing zinc and chlorhexidine had effects on intra-oral halitosis and reduced bacterial counts of species associated with malodor. Tongue scraping provided no beneficial effects on the microbiota studied. Clinical relevance: Periodontally healthy subjects with intra-oral halitosis benefit from daily rinsing with zinc- and chlorhexidine-containing mouth rinse.

Torg som offentliga mötesplatser: En praktisk tillämpning av analysmetoder2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Towards an Open-Source Based E-Mail Forensic Tool that uses Headers in Digital Investigation2023In: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, ACM Digital Library, 2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Email-related incidents/crimes are on the rise owing to the fact that communication by electronic mail (e-mail) has become an important part of our daily lives. The technicality behind e-mail plays an important role when looking for digital evidence that can be used to create a hypothesis that can be used during litigation. During this process, it is needful to have a tool that can help to isolate email incidents as a potential crime scene in the wake of suspected attacks. The problem that this paper is addressing paper, is more centered on realizing an open-source email-forensic tool that used the header analysis approach. One advantage of this approach is that it helps investigators to collect digital evidence from e-mail systems, organize the collected data, analyze and discover any discrepancies in the header fields of an e-mail, and generates an evidence report. The main contribution of this paper focuses on generating a freshly computed hash that is attached to every generated report, to ensure the verifiability, reliability, and integrity of the reports to prove that they have not been modified in any way. Finally, this ensures that the sanctity and forensic soundness of the collected evidence are maintained. © 2023 ACM.

Statistical Modelling and the Fokker-Planck Equation2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A stochastic process or sometimes called random process is the counterpart to a deterministic process in theory. A stochastic process is a random field, whose domain is a region of space, in other words, a random function whose arguments are drawn from a range of continuously changing values. In this case, Instead of dealing only with one possible 'reality' of how the process might evolve under time (as is the case, for example, for solutions of an ordinary differential equation), in a stochastic or random process there is some indeterminacy in its future evolution described by probability distributions. This means that even if the initial condition (or starting point) is known, there are many possibilities the process might go to, but some paths are more probable and others less. However, in discrete time, a stochastic process amounts to a sequence of random variables known as a time series. Over the past decades, the problems of synergetic are concerned with the study of macroscopic quantitative changes of systems belonging to various disciplines such as natural science, physical science and electrical engineering. When such transition from one state to another take place, fluctuations i.e. (random process) may play an important role. Fluctuations in its sense are very common in a large number of fields and nearly every system is subjected to complicated external or internal influences that are often termed noise or fluctuations. Fokker-Planck equation has turned out to provide a powerful tool with which the effects of fluctuation or noise close to transition points can be adequately be treated. For this reason, in this thesis work analytical and numerical methods of solving Fokker-Planck equation, its derivation and some of its applications will be carefully treated. Emphasis will be on both for one variable and N- dimensional cases.

Service Oriented Architecture & Web Services: Guidelines for Migrating from Legacy Systems and Financial Consideration2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to present guidelines that can be followed when introducing Service-oriented architecture through the use of Web services. This guideline will be especially useful for organizations migrating from their existing legacy systems where the need also arises to consider the financial implications of such an investment whether it is worthwhile or not. The proposed implementation guide aims at increasing the chances of IT departments in organizations to ensure a successful integration of SOA into their system and secure strong financial commitment from the executive management. Service oriented architecture technology is a new concept, a new way of looking at a system which has emerged in the IT world and can be implemented by several methods of which Web services is one platform. Since it is a developing technology, organizations need to be cautious on how to implement this technology to obtain maximum benefits. Though a well-designed, service-oriented environment can simplify and streamline many aspects of information technology and business, achieving this state is not an easy task. Traditionally, management finds it very difficult to justify the considerable cost of modernization, let alone shouldering the risk without achieving some benefits in terms of business value. The study identifies some common best practices of implementing SOA and the use of Web services, steps to successfully migrate from legacy systems to componentized or service enabled systems. The study also identified how to present financial return on investment and business benefits to the management in order to secure the necessary funds. This master thesis is based on academic literature study, professional research journals and publications, interview with business organizations currently working on service oriented architecture. I present guidelines that can be of assistance to migrate from legacy systems to service-oriented architecture based on the analysis from comparing information sources mentioned above.

Platser för avskildhet: Att få vara ifred i offentliga rum2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

3D VIDEO FORMAT CONVERSION2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main aim of this thesis work is to find/implement various methods that convert Conventional Stereoscopic 3D Video (CSV) to Multiview video (MVV). The work investigates different methods that can produce multiple views given a stereoscopic pair from a frame of a particular video sequence and continues with the process of selecting the best among investigated methods that has optimum quality and speed. In contrast to the existing algorithms, this work disregards the physical depth but instead focus on pixel value correspondence. The intermediate view generation in this work is not considered as a geometrical problem, but a morphing problem. Different morphing algorithms (mesh, field and thin plate spline morphing techniques) are considered for conversion. Performance of each morphing algorithm is in turn compared using different correspondence matching techniqes. The investigated methods aim to produce arbitrary number of novel synthesized camera views from a sparse view set. Mesh morphing algorithm is found to be a better candidate in terms of signal to noise ratio, but requires accurate correspondences at edges of an object in a particular scene and also needs more execution time to generate more number of views. A new approach to field morphing has been introduced in this thesis work, which performs better in terms of execution time and also found to produce intermediate views with reasonable signal to noise ratio. This approach is observed to bring good trade off between speed and accuracy. This conversion has an advantage it can be used as a decompression mechanism that can produce multiple views required for an Autostereoscopic 3D display from a stereoscopic left and right pair. This approach also brings the benefit of backward compatibility as present standards for CSV may be used to provide multiview 3D video to high fidelity Autostereoscopic 3D displays of the future. This work has applications in free view point television, video conferencing systems etc.,

Green Marketing Potential as Assessed from Consumer's Purchasing Behaviors: The Case of Ghana2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Green Marketing has become an important strategy in businesses since the international rise of environmental awareness among countries. With greater awareness rising among the public, especially with reference to the global warming and climate change phenomenon, people have become cautious with regards to their purchases, specifically towards the nature of purchased products. As green marketing continues therefore to evolve not only into a strategy but into a platform across the world, Ghana is still at the onset of a green marketing phenomenon. To therefore assess the direction of this phenomenon, the study is aimed at determining the green marketing potential in Ghana as assessed through the perspective of consumers. Environmental Awareness and Consumer Behavior was used in order to assess the presence of a green potential in Ghana. As environmental awareness is able to serve a clear purpose for green consumerism, consumer behavior is able to show the applicative potential of green consumerism. Through online surveys and questionnaires, results of the study were able to reveal a strong green potential existing in Ghana, both with positive indicators within environmental awareness and consumer behavior. Further, results have also noted specific products that have the greatest potential within Ghana‘s green market; green food and body care products showed the highest potential for a prospective green business as reflected in bivariate fit analysis.

Gear stress analysis and understanding the effect of misalignment and microgeometry is important for gear designers and for those who work in gear maintenance. The misalignment can lead to the higher stress acting in one side of the gear tooth and the micro-geometry modification can improve the stress distribution in the gear teeth. In this research, a helical gear pair was modeled using three different software and tools; LDP, KISSsoft and Abaqus. Three different cases were modeled to study the effect of misalignment and microgeometry. Finally, the results from different tools were presented and discussed. It was observed that the tooth contact analysis software resulted in significantly higher stresses than the FE software. The results have been discussed to understand the differences in the cases obtained from the used tools. The results showed how bad is the effect of the misalignment on the gear mesh and the stress distribution and how the microgeometry modifications are used to compensate that effect.

Parameterstyrd tillverkning av rör för marina fartyg2012Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Utvärderingskruxet: Synen på utvärdering inom stadsbyggnadsprojekt2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sociala medier för att hantera kundkontakter2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

KONTEXT.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Design and implementation of the MMS portal2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

MMS-enabled terminals on the market today are very complicated to use. It takes several steps to create a multi-slide MMS-message with images and text. This discourages users from using it. To increase usage of MMS, several companies provide web-based or stand-alone programs that allow users to create and send MMS-messages from a regular computer. However these editors have many limitations and are not user-friendly. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a user-friendly web-based MMS-portal where users can create, edit and send MMS-messages. The portal is integrated into Densitet’s system for development of mobile services. Conclusions that can be draw from this work are that problems with MMS interoperability have mostly the poor standardization to blame. Different terminals support different types of images and sound formats, and to make the MMS-portal user-friendly, format conversions of uploaded content had to be implemented. Also the MMS-portal only supports basic MMS-functionality. If the MMS-specification includes more audio and image formats and if the MMS-terminals are upgraded to handle these formats, sending MMS-messages will be easier and mobile messaging will continue to grow.

Mål- och resultatstyrning i offentlig verksamhet: En fallstudie av äldreförvaltningen inom Karlskrona kommun2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To compile a description of how output and result control works practically according to budget responsible persons on managing level in the public sector. Then study if output control and result control in the public sector could be classified as output control and result control according to general typologies of management control made by different authors. We shall at the same time both find answers on if the output and result control is a well functioning management control method and if the possibility to measure goals that has been set up must be there to be able to run output and result control in the public sector. Method: Deep interviews with budget responsible persons in the elderly administration in the community of Karlskrona. We have then interpreted the interviewed persons opinions to the meaning of output control and result control in the elderly administration. Results: Our study has come to the conclusion that the elderly administration that claims to be using output control and result control is in fact operating with “frame control with cost responsibility” according to the typologies that we have studied. We have although in the same time received an answer that their method of control works in a good way and that this mostly depends on the measurements in form of “abstract judgments” of the activity.

    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the problem of automatic monitoring the weld quality produced by robotised short arc welding. A simple statistical change detection algorithm for the weld quality, recursive Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT), is used. The algorithm may equivalently be viewed as a cumulative sum (CUSUM) - type test. The test statistics is based upon the variance of the amplitude of the weld voltage. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using experimental data. The results obtained from the algorithm indicate that it is possible to detect changes in the weld quality automatically and on-line.

A Sequential Probability Ratio Test Method for Quality Monitoring in Robotised GMA Welding1997Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with the problem of automatic monitoring the weld quality when welding with Gas Metal Arc (GMA) in short circuiting mode. Experiments with two different types of T-joints are performed in order to provoke optimal and non-optimal welding conditions. During the experiments, voltage and current are measured from the welding process. A simple statistical change detection algorithm for the weld quality, the repeated Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT), is used. The algorithm can equivalently be viewed as a cumulative sum (CUSUM) - type test. The test statistics is based upon the fluctuations of amplitude in the weld voltage. It is shown that the fluctuations of the weld voltage amplitude decreases when the welding process is not operating under optimal condition. The results obtained from the experiments indicate that it is possible to detect changes in the weld quality automatically and on-line.

    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the problems involved in the automatic monitoring of the weld quality produced by robotized short-arc welding. A simple statistical change detection algorithm for the weld quality, the repeated Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT), was used. The algorithm may similarly be viewed as a cumulative sum (CUSUM) type test, and is well-suited to detecting sudden minor changes in the monitored test statistic. The test statistic is based on the variance of the weld voltage, wherein it will be shown that the variance decreases when the welding process is not operating under optimal conditions. The performance of the algorithm is assessed through the use of experimental data. The results obtained from the algorithm show that it is possible to detect changes in weld quality automatically and on-line.

    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the problem of automatic detection of burn-through in weld joints. Gas metal are (GMA) welding with pulsed current is used, and welding voltage and current are recorded. As short-circuitings are common between the welding electrode and the work piece during burn-through, a short-circuit detector is developed to detect these events. To detect another specific characteristic of burn-through-a broadband long-lasting voltage component-this detector is combined with a square-law detector. This second detector is based on a non-linear modification of an autoregressive model with extra input (ARX-model) of the welding process. The results obtained from this compound detector indicate that it is possible to detect burn-through in the welds automatically. The work also indicates that it is possible to design an on-line monitoring system for robotic GMA welding.
