Regional Disparities in Food Retailing2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

INTRODUCTION Food retailing in the Baltic States has developed rapidly in recent times. The future structure is expected to become similar to that of other regions in the European Union. However, a similar market structure may not mean that businesses can expand from one region to another without taking differing consumer attitudes and cultures into account. This study examines differences between Baltic and Nordic food retailing and consumer behaviour based on an analysis of Estonia, Finland and Sweden. PURPOSE The purpose of the thesis is to highlight regional disparities between the Nordic and Baltic food retailing sectors in terms of market structure and consumer attitudes towards store types, own-label brands, low price brands and ecological products. METHOD The research has been conducted through a qualitative study of food retailers currently operating on the Estonian, Swedish and Finnish market. A quantitative study of consumer behaviour with students as the target group has also been carried out. Interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data that has been compared to the information collected by the literature study. CONCLUSION The study identified that the market situation in Estonia is still in a period of development with the largest and smallest store formats developing at a faster pace than mid-sized outlets. While the hard-discount format is relatively new for Nordic customers it is already maturing in Estonia. Despite companies’ internationalisation strategies, it is in their own interests to take local differences into account and take a more adaptive rather than standardised approach when expanding into Estonia. Nordic and Baltic consumers in the study group and their preferences for store and product choice are similar with a slightly higher level of curiosity and interest towards ecological products among the Estonians. For the retailers in Estonia, there is a potential to develop own-label and low-price brands which may experience initial success. However, in the longer term Estonian consumer attitudes towards such brands and foreign products could be an obstacle to their growth in the market.

Application of LEAN and BPR principles for Software Process Improvement (SPI): A case study of a large software development organization2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Abstract ------------- Background ---------------- Like other businesses, the failures and problems faced by the software development industry over the time have motivated experts to look for software process improvement to create quality software rapidly, repeatedly, and reliably. Objective ------------ The purpose of this study is to evaluate if and how Lean thinking and principles primarily associated with auto manufacturing industry can be applied to software development lifecycle for Software Process Improvement (SPI). The secondary aim is to analyze how BPR can be integrated with Lean software development for process improvement. Method ---------- A derived Lean-BPR adoption pattern model is used as a theoretical framework for this thesis. The seven Lean software development principles along with four-step BPR process are selected as process improvement patterns, which effects the KPIs of a software organization. This research study incorporates both Qualitative and Quantitative methods and data to analyze the objectives of this study. The methodological framework of Plan-Do-Check-Act is used in the case study to implement process re-engineering incorporating Lean and BPR principles. The impact of adopting the Lean and BPR principles is assessed in terms of cost, productivity, quality of products and resource management. Results ---------- Application of Lean and BPR principles for software process improvement in the organization under study resulted in 79% improvement in test coverage, 60% reduction in time for test execution and analysis and 44% reduction in cost for fixing defects that were being passed to customer in past. Conclusion ------------- Based on case study results, it can be concluded that Lean, a bottom up approach, characterized by empowerment of employees to analyze and improve their own working process can be effectively combined with IT centric traditionally top down BPR approach for improving KPI’s and software processes.

Implementing an Environmental Planning System2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Problem Climate change is here now causing dramatic storms, heat waves and other extreme temperature that affects everyone on earth. The importance of environmental issues has triggered politicians, governmental bodies and industries to take precautionary measures. This has caution organizations to initiate activities that will reduce the damage caused by them to the environment although it may involve cost. One of these organisations is the Green Scorpion in South Africa that has prosecuted steel companies in the country for environmental violation. Highveld Steel Limited is one of these companies. This has prompt these steel companies to implement an environmental management system (EMS). The cost and benefits, of introducing such preventive measure makes it advisable to implement a suitable EMS that will be relatively important to the organization interest. Purpose The research is meant to guide the implementation of an environmental management system. This will be the result of steel companies in South Africa to develop an environmental management system that would be realized to suit them. Also, the research will examine the strength, weakness and managerial endeavours of Highveld Steel Limited to implement an efficient environmental management system. Method Qualitative and deduction based research approaches were preferred compared to quantitative and induction research. Grounded theory is the qualitative research method that is used in this research. It was done with caution to confirm and verify the trustworthiness of the data we used with other sources of information and references. Telephone interview was used to collect empirical data. The author beforehand will prepare a questionnaire for interview with a top manager. To accompany the research an extensive literature review will also be undertaken. Not only will this provide a valuable insight into how others have approached this subject area, but it will also ensure that the investigation is not duplicated by any previously undertaken work in addition to ensuring a degree of depth in understanding the concepts and theories involved. Result The research reveals that Environmental Management Implementation Process (EMIP) could help South Africa Steel companies to adopt an appropriate environmental management system. Four main stages were deduced for the proposed EMIP for an environmental management system to be efficient. The four main stages are research, analysis, choice and implementation. The research concludes that EMIP could generate environmental management system (EMS) that would be of interest to stakeholders and enhance better use of resources for Highveld limited. Also, EMIP will ensure that, Implementation of an EMS will not restrain corporate objective achievement.

Business Process Integration: How to Achieve Interoperability through Process Patterns2017Inngår i: Proceedings - 14th IEEE International Conference on E-Business Engineering, ICEBE 2017 - Including 13th Workshop on Service-Oriented Applications, Integration and Collaboration, SOAIC 207, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. , 2017, s. 109-117Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Business process integration (BPI) is a crucial technique for supporting inter-organizational business interoperability. BPI allows automation of business processes and the integration of systems across numerous organizations. The integration of organizations' process models is one of the most addressed and used approach to achieve BPI. However, this model integration is complex and requires that designers have extensive experience in particular when organizations' business processes are incompatible. This paper considers the issue of modeling cross-organization processes out of a collection of organizations' private process models. To this end, we propose six adaptation patterns to resolve incompatibilities when combining organizations' processes. Each pattern is formalized with workflow net. © 2017 IEEE.

Analysis of the Commercial Relations between Sweden and Latin America2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

During 2003, Swedish exports to Central and South America were only 1,9% of the total Swedish exports; furthermore, Swedish imports during the same period to Central and South America were 1,1% of total Swedish imports. The figures show how Swedish trade with Latin American countries is very low. The only Latin American country that in 2003 made part of the main 30 Swedish trade partners was Mexico, in the 22nd position. Swedish exports to Mexico represented 0,7% of total Swedish Exports for the year. The purpose of this thesis is to make an analysis of the problems that Swedish companies face when doing business with the Latin American region, and to explore the causes of the low exchange rates in the commercial relations between Sweden and Latin America.

Entreprenöriell marknadsföring: Hur marknadsförs småföretag startade av entreprenörer2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Electronic Retail Payment Systems: User Acceptability & Payment Problems2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

ELECTRONIC RETAIL PAYMENT SYSTEMS: USER ACCEPTABILITY AND PAYMENT PROBLEMS IN GHANA The payment system in Ghana has undergone considerable change as electronic payment has gained increasingly popularity, especially in the cities. In Ghana, most bills are paid by walk-in customers. Because of limited transportation, many customers prefer paying by other means that may not include traveling. Customers are now looking for a way that they can easily make payments without going to each biller’s location, purchase money orders, and no loss of time. This thesis looks into issues in payment problems and user acceptance. Payment for goods and services in Ghana is characterized by long queues, long distance traveling and time wasting that negatively affect business activities and ultimately economic development. Settling utility bills, payment for goods and services, and money transfers has been a major headache for individuals and firms in Ghana resulting in declined business activities and huge debt to most of the utility services providers. Indeed, most Ghanaians are yet to fully realize the benefits of the technological advances made in banking services like networking of business branches, electronic transfers and use of automated teller machines. The few payment mechanisms that are available are not being well patronized by bank’s customers. The purpose of the study is to assess the issue of user acceptance in the existing electronic retail payments and also to ascertain the impact in solving some of the problems in retail payment for goods and services in Ghana. The research also describes and briefly analyses recent and potential future trends in electronic payments in Ghana, and the challenges faced by participants in this business. It is also in response to the growing need in Ghana to develop non-cash payment products and clearing systems in order to reduce the over- dependence on cash payments. In analyzing the electronic payments, we restricted ourselves to business to consumer (B2C) segment. The research questions for our study are: Can electronic payment system replace existing payment systems and solve payment problems? How are customer attitudes about electronic payments changing? What are the impediments to market development and innovation in electronic payments? This study used primary sources in a form of "consumer survey" questionnaire in obtaining the perceptions of bank customers (mostly individual customers) and interviews of bank’s staffs. An extensive review of the available literature provided the foundations for the writing of the thesis. The study collected data from secondary sources such as the Internet, articles, databases, and books, and were analyzed and interpreted. In the rare situations when official statistics are available, the recentness of the data determined its usefulness. It is universally agreed that a safe and efficient national payment system is essential for sound banking. The benefits derived from electronic payment cannot be over emphasized. Numerous studies have shown that electronic payment brings many benefits to users – convenience, security, record-keeping, low cost, and etc. Our study shows that electronic payment systems have the potential to eliminate if not reduce the problems consumer face in the payment and settlement system. The study also revealed that consumers are ready to embrace the new payment systems – electronic payment, provided other well anticipated side benefits are promoted to them.

The Attitudes of Christian Church Pastors and Leaders toward Leadership Succession, For Leadership Continuity, in Charismatic and Pentecostal Church Organizations in Kumasi, Ghana.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Lack of cooperation of the incumbent leaders was a major cause of leadership succession failures of organizations reported. This investigation was carried out to determine the attitudes of Christian Senior Pastors and leaders (associate Pastors and Elders), for leadership continuity, toward leadership succession of Charismatic and Pentecostal Church organizations in Kumasi, Ghana; to find lasting solution to the problem of lack of cooperation of incumbent leaders towards leadership succession planning by determining the root cause of lack of cooperation of incumbent senior leader towards leadership succession. Using in-depth interview, qualitative data was collected and analyzed using inductive procedure of Structuring (Ordering) of Meanings Using Narrative for analysis. This work contends that even though best practices are necessary condition for leadership succession effectiveness, they are not sufficient to make the incumbent senior leader willing and cooperative enough to act in the best interest of the organization, let alone yield to leadership succession. It was found that the Christian Churches investigated have positive attitudes towards leadership succession because of character development adopted in the churches. It was found that apart from fear (Freeman, 2004; Zhang and Rajagopalan, 2006; 2010) and ego (Freeman, 2004; Beeson, 2006; Ciampa, 2005), unforgveness and self-centeredness were other causes, holding back the effectiveness of leadership succession due to lack of cooperation of the incumbents, with self-centeredness being the source of fear, ego and unforgiveness. It was concluded that self-centeredness was the root cause of lack of cooperation of Senior Pastors towards leadership succession. Because fear (Freeman, 2004; Zhang and Rajagopalan, 2006; 2010), ego (Freeman, 2004; Beeson, 2006; Ciampa, 2005), unforgiveness and self-centeredness produce insecurity, the incumbents were never willing and cooperative to subject themselves to anything they perceived as threat. On the basis of this, succession failures reported will rather increase in frequency. Nevertheless, self-centeredness could be resolved effectively by adopting character development focused on the following nine attributes: Faith, Peace, Joy, Humility, Patience, Self-control, Kindness, Goodness and Love (value, respect, approval, availability, attention, appreciation and service). The results suggest that the incumbent Pastors have the tendency to take actions, make choices and decisions that are in the best interest of their organization, and are favorably disposed towards leadership succession. The Christian Churches are well positioned to produce leaders who are cooperative and selfless enough to plan their own succession using best practices that yield desired outcomes. This work contributes to a better understanding of attitudes, character, relationship, motivation, highlights the invisible features (self-centeredness, fear, ego and unforgiveness) of leadership succession failures in the organization, and the transformation of character that results by simple change of attitudes consistently modified by love and its attributes so that the decisions, choices and actions of the incumbents can favor the organization, consequently, making them willing and cooperative enough to plan their own succession. Based on the results of the Christian Church organization, it serves as a basis for further research in the field.

Strategies in the Colombian Telecommunication Market – Seen Through the Perspective of Porter2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The most important conclusion we can draw from our research is that Porter´s three generic strategies, mainly the differentiation strategy, still are frequently used in the Colombian telecommunication market. Another conclusion is that a high-speed changing environment, such as the Colombian market, demands that the operators combine and integrate their strategy with other secondary strategies to become succesful. They can not, as Porter says, only depend on one strategy

Forecasting Cellular Mobile Traffic: An Econometric Approach2006Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We consider the problem of explaining and forecasting the volume of cellular mobile traffic in a long-term perspective. To this end, we create a model of a market with both economic and non-economic variables, viz. the state of the economy, the current price level and the penetration effect on the market in question. We measure these variables by using publicly available data and by applying income theories and by combining theories of demand and technology diffusion. Applying the model to three markets, viz. China, Italy and Sweden, we show that it performs very well in explaining and predicting the volume of cellular mobile traffic. Noting the qualitative differences between these markets, we conclude that the model has some universality in that the results are comparable for all of them

Simple and Accurate Forecasting of the Market for Cellular Mobile Services2007Inngår i: Managing Traffic Performance in Converged Networks, Berlin: Springer , 2007Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We consider the problems of explaining and forecasting the penetration and the traffic in cellular mobile networks. To this end, we create two regression models, viz. one to predict the penetration from service charges and network effects and another one to predict the traffic from service charges and diffusion and adoption effects. The results of the models can also be combined to compute the likely evolutions of essential characteristics such as Minutes of Use (MoU), Average Revenue per User (ARPU) and total revenue. Applying the models to 26 markets throughout the world we show that they perform very well. Noting the significant qualitative differences between these markets, we conclude that the model has some universality in that the results are comparable for all of them.

FINANCING OF SMEs (SMALL & MEDIUM ENTERPRISES);ALTERNATIVES, POLICY MEASURES AND FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS– THE CASE OF PAKISTAN’S COTTON GINNING INDUSTRY2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The present study is an attempt to identify the financial issues of SMEs of Pakistan. Pakistan’s cotton ginning industry has chosen as a case. The general objective of the study is to analyze the financing issues/problems of the small‐scale industries (cotton ginning) with appropriate alternatives and financing solutions. The extensive theoretical framework about financing of SMEs along with seven hypotheses (for testing) has been included in research work as base of study. Data collection has performed through both primary and secondary sources. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been employed for the research work. For this research work, sample size of 30 cotton ginning factories has selected from the population of 1400 cotton ginning factories of Pakistan. The researchers have selected the cotton ginning SMEs of Faisalabad Division by keeping in view the importance of Faisalabad division as 2nd largest industrial city and 3rd largest cotton producing division of Pakistan and the factor of easy access (for researchers) to the chosen factories. Statistical data analysis techniques are used to analyze the data which was collected through questionnaire’s survey from SMEs and the results have presented with hypothesis testing. After identifying the financial issues the alternatives, financial solutions and recommendations have been given for policy measures. The findings of research work indicates that high interest rate on loans, heavy taxes, poor government policies, owner’s education level, old technology and poor legal and accounting self‐ efficacy are the major reasons of financial problems. Soft and friendly government policies, short and long term loans at lowest interest rate for running and technology up‐gradation are recommended. Joint ventures are found to be the most suitable alternative for financial solutions.

Utvärderingsmetod Säkerhetskultur: Ett första steg i en valideringsprocess2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Nurturing Innovation in Globalized Corporations: A case study of Kraft Foods & Qualcomm Inc.2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The capability to innovate and to carry innovation successfully down to markets will undoubtedly be a crucial determinant of the global competition among firms in the few upcoming years. There is growing awareness among business leaders that innovative activity is the main driver of economic growth as well as a potential factor in meeting global market challenges. But for innovation to flourish, companies need to understand the core of innovation and the role organizational factors play in the process of innovation. In this thesis, we examined organizational structure, forms of innovation and competencies and capabilities and innovation. Two case studies, Kraft Foods and Qualcomm, were presented to carry out our research. Through a review of relevant literature, a theoretical framework, upon which the research model, the survey and interview questions were based, was constructed. Interviews were conducted with eight corporate executives, while the survey was executed with 20 respondents from various departments of each firm. Interviews data was analyzed with qualitative method while the collected responses from survey were analyzed with statistical hypothesis testing method. Both results were discussed in comparison with the literature. The test results revealed the positive impact of competencies and capabilities on innovation for both firms. But the test results of company structure varied between the two firms. That can be explained by the rigidness of the structure through the different layers of the organization. Innovation forms were investigated in light of the importance of external knowledge sources for innovation.

Outsourcing – på vilka grunder? En fallstudie av underlagen vid outsourcingbeslut2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Company Karlskrona Musikfest´s efforts to reach maximum attendance – An analysis of the New Years review DNA 2003/04 and their promotion mix. Författare/Authors: Carina Assarsson & Ing-Marie Åkesson-Blomberg Handledare/Supervisor: Tom Michel Institution: Institutionen för Ekonomi och Management, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola Department: Department of Business Administration, Blekinge Institute of Technology Kurs: Kandidatarbete i företagsekonomi, 10 poäng Course: Bachelor thesis in Business Administration, 10 credits. Purpose: The study examines how the New Years review in Karlskrona markets their show and if their promotionmix has been successful. The study also answers the question of which age group the review interests. Finally it will give a better understanding for other arrangements to their advertising and promotion mixes. Method: The study is a case study and it’s deductive and quantitative. Because of the meeting with the producer, it is also a bit qualitative. Results: The study concludes that the company who arranges the review had an effective mix of advertising, the decision to include the TV-commercials happened to be a good choice. Those types of advertising that were most noticed, was advertising in a newspaper, TV-commercials and posters. When it came to acceptable advertising the same order did appear. The analysis shown, that the New Years review did not attract younger people, to a great extent. The age of the audience was quite advanced. If the company wants to attract younger people as well, they have to reconsider their commercial channels. Finally enlarge the budget of advertising may be necessary.

    Abstract [en]

Title – Promoting Mobile Financial Transactions: A Case study of Zain Sierra Leone Author – Kesiena Atuyota-Ejughemre Supervisor - Anders Hederstierna Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s thesis in business administration, 15 credits (ECTS). Background and Problem Discussion: There are challenges associated with overly cash based societies. The use of mobile financial systems could address some of these challenges. Understanding the factors that influence people’s willingness to use mobile systems for financial transactions could be significant in developing strategies to transition from traditional payment systems to mobile financial transaction systems. Purpose – The purpose of this is to assess contribution of customer trust and perception of customer focus to the willingness of GSM subscribers to use the mobile system for financial transactions and how the understanding derived from these factors can be used to develop strategies to promote a transition from cashed based society to mobile financial transactions. Method- Quantitative and deductive approach was used. 300 GSM respondents who were selected with a multistage sampling method in three locations were surveyed. Interviewers were used to get data on perceived customer focus level, customer trust and willingness to engage in mobile financial transactions. Theory – Theory section looks at the concepts relating to customer trust and customer perception of customer focus and pertinent subconstructs applicable to the engagement in mobile financial transactions. Analysis – I have used correlational analysis to verify the level of association between customer trust, customer focus perception, socio demographic factors and the willingness to engage in mobile financial transactions. In order to verify the influence of income, a non parametric test was done. Conclusions – The analysis of the data results showed that there is a strong positive association between the willingness to use mobile for financial transactions. Also, the analysis revealed a positive correlation between the perception of customer focus by subscribers and the willingness to engage in mobile financial transactions. There was no significant influence by demographic factors such as age and gender on the willingness to engage in mobile financial transactions. A 3 phased implementation strategy was proposed for the deployment of a mobile financial transaction system.

The Effects of Customer Relationship Marketing Practices on Customer Satisfaction among the Customers of Ghana Oil Company Limited.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The Ghanaian economy has recently received massive growth for various reasons. However, much of the growth is attributed to the recent discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities. This phenomenon has led to the springing up of many Oil Marketing Companies (OMC’S) which of latest count has 84 OMC’S and counting. This number of OMC’s has led to the adoption of various Customer Relationship Marketing (CRM) activities and practices to outwit other competitors in the industry. Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) is one of such OMC’s and the focus of this study. Our study was aimed at studying the complex concept of Customer Satisfaction in the light of the Customer Relationship Marketing practices of the company. We are aware that in order for a company to prosper it must retain its clientele. This study will find out if the CRM practices of GOIL are enough to keep its customers satisfied, loyal and content. The study made use of questionnaires and randomly selected a sample size which signifies 10 % of the total dealer population and corporate customers and 5 lubricant resellers. In conclusion, it was revealed that, the main dimensions of perceived service quality in GOIL are Tangibility, responsiveness and empathy and thus needs to be improved to meet the customer’s satisfaction.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AS A CATALYST FOR CONSUMER CHOICE2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Even though research on CSR activities has been on the rise, they do not have generally ratified and widely acclaimed explanation with regard to the variation in consumer response to firms operating within the same industry and supporting the same CSR activities. The aim of this research was to investigate the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in catalyzing consumer choice. The writers used quantitative research method whereby data was collected by means of online questionnaires in an online survey. The analysis was carried out through frequency, descriptive, reliability, correlation and regression analyses. We realized that although a relationship exists between CSR and consumer behavior through the three channels including legitimacy, information asymmetry and ethical decision making, CSR does not drive sales, but increases the appetite for more CSR information for use in product assessment. Therefore, the engagement in CSR may only increase purchasing and evaluation intention, but not the actual purchase. Given that CSR directly results in the increased information search, the best way to orient CSR to stimulate consumer purchase is through the availability of CSR information to the consumer through localization of CSR activities alongside product excellence and competitive product pricing. Our recommendation is that future research should consider smaller geographical zones, for instance an institution or a city.

Är grönt mode skönt? Unga kvinnliga modekonsumenters attityd gentemot hållbart mode.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Business Process Performance Measurement for Rollout Success2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Business process improvement for increased product quality is of continuous importance in the software industry. Quality managers in this sector need effective, hands-on tools for decision-making in engineering projects and for rapidly spotting key improvement areas. Measurement programs are a widespread approach for introducing quality improvement in software processes, yet employing all-embracing state-of-the art quality assurance models is labor intensive. Unfortunately, these do not primarily focus on measures, revealing a need for an instant and straightforward technique for identifying and defining measures in projects without resources or need for entire measurement programs. This thesis explores and compares prevailing quality assurance models using measures, rendering the Measurement Discovery Process constructed from selected parts of the PSM and GQM techniques. The composed process is applied to an industrial project with the given prerequisites, providing a set of measures that are subsequently evaluated. In addition, the application gives foundation for analysis of the Measurement Discovery Process. The application and analysis of the process show its general applicability to projects with similar constraints as well as the importance of formal target processes and exhaustive project domain knowledge among measurement implementers. Even though the Measurement Discovery Process is subject to future refinement, it is clearly a step towards rapid delivery of tangible business performance indicators for process improvement.

HOW TO MAKE ANALYSIS WORK IN BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE SOFTWARE2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Competitive Intelligence (CI) has been defined by many authors. These definitions do have certain differences but all of them have a main common feature: They put the accent on the analysis. The most precise definition is given by the Society for Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP): “A systematic and ethical program for gathering, analyzing, and managing external information that can affect your company’s plans, decisions, and operations”. Business Intelligence (BI) is much broader concept than CI. It has rather technical meaning while CI is more about managerial perspective of intelligence. BI includes activities such as data mining, market analysis, sales analysis, and analysis of customer and supplier records and behavior (Bouthillier et al., 2003). However, in some European countries, such as Sweden and Denmark, BI and CI have the similar meaning (Bouthillier et al., 2003). Either way, the main feature of both concepts is the ability to analyze data and information and to deduct intelligence out of them. Currently, a large number of BI and/or CI software is available, and being developed worldwide. A simple search of the “Business Intelligence software” term in Google gives about 548.000 results. Most of these software are quite enhanced and well developed but only a few of them have a good analysis tool, and even fewer give a choice of analysis tools to their users. An extensive work has been done on BI software evaluation by Amara et al. (2009) to classify the top BI software vendors according to the extent of their analysis by using the SSAV (Solberg Söilen, Amara, Vriens) model. A number of analyses for Business Intelligence have been summed up also in Solberg Söilen (2005). The conclusion of both works was the same: BI software need robust analysis tools. In this research we pursue two goals: First we investigate what are the major obstacles for making a better analysis function in the Business Intelligence (BI) software and second we examine how those obstacles can be solved both technically and from a managerial perspective. The intention in this study is to investigate how the analysis module is functioning in the BI software and see how it could be implemented more effectively. This means that the study has two sides one Competitive Intelligence (CI) for the managerial approach and one Business Intelligence (BI) for the more technical approach. First we present a comprehensive literature review and pin point the problems and obstacles defined by many authors. Then we propose a method to solve the identified problems and finally we concentrate on advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method. The proposed technical solution is under construction in the BI software called Subsoft developed by Dr. Klaus Solberg Söilen. We investigate to what extent conclusions here can be used to develop the software further. The managerial perspective of the solutions is explored in close collaboration with two other BI companies: Sentient and Crystalloids, both based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Sustainable Equity Fund Investments within Latin America– case of Indigenous People2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Sustainable development has been a popular sentiment among those in the international development field for many years. Sustainable development refers not only to environmental conservation, but responsible social initiatives as well especially as it relates to minority groups such as indigenous peoples. The players concerned have conventionally involved local and national governments, multilateral organizations, and various NGOs. Increasingly, the private sector has become engaged in this area as well. Our study shows that now, more than ever, there is a need and opportunity for ethical funds in Latin America and other emerging markets dedicated for the indigenous people. We address the challenges and opportunities to create a new model of investment in emerging markets and concretely with indigenous peoples under a sustainable model, including clean energy production.

Contextual Analysis of IT-Business Alignment2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

IT-Business alignment is an imperative process in the success of any business to use the competitive advantage of the information technology. In this work, influence of contextual information on IT-Business alignment has been studied. For this purpose, a conceptual model has been proposed which considers the IT-Business alignment model and national culture as contextual information. For alignment model, strategic alignment maturity model (SAMM) by Luftmann has been used while Hofstede’s model has been followed for the analysis of national culture. Conceptual model considers the 6 maturity assessment elements and analyzes them in the perspective of 4 national cultural factors. Survey methodology has been employed with questionnaire technique to compute the SAMM elements. National cultural scores have been obtained from the empirical study of Hofstede. Empirical results of SAMM elements and cultural factors have been used to support the analysis of the conceptual model.

THE REDENOMINATIO OF THE GHANAIAN CURRENCY(2007)- A STUDY OF ITS IMPACT ON THE BUSINESS OF THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS IN GHANA2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Abstract The cedi is Ghana’s official currency which was introduced on July 19, 1965. The loss in the value of the cedi since its introduction cannot be overestimated. Owing to the low values of the notes and coins(due to persistent loss in value), huge quantities had to be printed and minted resulting in huge cost to the central bank. Meanwhile commercial banks were facing high cash based transaction cost because relatively large quantities of notes were needed for transactions. There was also high risk involved in cash based transaction to the banks and their clients. Bank customers were becoming more uncomfortable carrying huge quantities of cash to and from the banks. These customers also had to spend more time at the banking halls to get served. These and other factors reduced the interest and confidence of the general public in the financial sector affecting banking businesses. The re denomination of the cedi was done in 2007, to deal with these ’huge dead-weight burden’ on the banks and the entire economy of Ghana. The objective of this study is to explore its impact on some variables affecting commercial banking businesses. These are cost, operational risk, deposit mobilization, ATM operations, and reliability and convenience of banking services. A pluralistic approach was adopted for this research and the results of both the quantitative and qualitative study done in analyzing my hypothesis reaffirmed each other and provided valuable findings and deeper understanding of the impact of the re denomination on the business of the financial institutions. The main findings showed the following: 1) The re denomination had not affected costs in banks, 2) The re denomination has generally reduced operational loss risks, 3) The re denomination has generally improved deposit mobilization, 4) The re denomination has improved the reliability and profitability of ATM s, 5) The re denomination has improved the reliability and convenience of banking services. With this study I hope to provide new insights on how re denomination affects the business of financial institutions who are key partners to the central banks in the successful implementation of such exercise. I also hope to provide valuable recommendations on how banks can deal with the challenges that may be presented by a re denomination

Finansieringsresonemang: en studie av fyra småföretag2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Age of managers and employees: Firm survival2020Inngår i: Journal of the Economics of Ageing, ISSN 2212-828X, Vol. 15, artikkel-id 100215Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Many developed countries will face a disproportionately large share of older individuals in the future. This change may lead to a labour force characterized by older employees and older operational managers. This paper contributes to the existing literature on the effect of aging on firm performance by performing an explorative analysis of how the age of the operational manager and the age composition of employees relate to the survival of Swedish firms during 2004–2013. We observe that the relationship between the age of the operational manager and firm exit changes functional shape when separated into different firm-size categories. Additionally, the age of the operational manager tends to be more important for new firms compared to incumbents. The share of older employees is positively associated with firm survival. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

    Abstract [en]

Studies confirm an inverted U-shaped relationship between age and entrepreneurship. This paper deepens the understanding of this relationship by analysing how the relationship varies across time and across different types of regions, aspects often overlooked in the current literature. An individual perspective is taken, and the probability of starting a firm is expected to increase as individuals' age but at a decreasing rate. The results show significant differences in the relationship between the age of individuals and the rate of entrepreneurship across time and space. The age-entrepreneurship profile has shifted to the left over time such that individuals are younger when they start firms. © 2017 Royal Dutch Geographical Society KNAG.

Location of New Firms: Influence of Commuting Behaviour2017Inngår i: Growth and Change, ISSN 0017-4815, E-ISSN 1468-2257, Vol. 48, nr 4, s. 682-699Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the entrepreneurship literature, it is generally assumed that an individual establishes a new firm in a location in which they have strong ties, normally in the municipality of residence or employment. We scrutinise this general assumption and show that firm location depends on individual characteristics, such as the commuting experience. Our results show that commuting influences the firm location choice. The probability of establishing a firm in the work municipality increases if the entrepreneur is a commuter, holding constant the type of region and unobservable and observable individual features.

Perspectives on Productivity and Delays in Large-Scale Agile Projects2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Many large and distributed companies run agile projects in development environments that are inconsistent with the original agile ideas. Problems that result from these inconsistencies can affect the productivity of development projects and the timeliness of releases. To be effective in such contexts, the agile ideas need to be adapted. We take an inductive approach for reaching this aim by basing the design of the development process on observations of how context, practices, challenges, and impacts interact. This paper reports the results of an interview study of five agile development projects in an environment that was unfavorable for agile principles. Grounded theory was used to identify the challenges of these projects and how these challenges affected productivity and delays according to the involved project roles. Productivity and delay-influencing factors were discovered that related to requirements creation and use, collaboration, knowledge management, and the application domain. The practitioners’ explanations about the factors' impacts are, on one hand, a rich empirical source for avoiding and mitigating productivity and delay problems and, on the other hand, a good starting point for further research on flexible large-scale development.

FinTech in emerging markets: a case study for Romania and Financial Technologies2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cultural, socio-demographic, technologic, financial and regulatory factors in Romania and analyze how these factors influence the adoptionof FinTech in the Romanian market.

Design/methodology/approach. Using a case study as a research method, we have gained comprehensive information from various data sources. Furthermore, we have distributed a detailed questionnaire and attempted to gauge the influence of various factors over the respondents’ usage of FinTech.

Contribution. This study attempts to improve a theoretical framework regarding the main factorsinfluencing the Fintech adoption in emerging economies. The paper contributes to the literature by describing how the interrelation of different factors contributes to the adoption of a new technologyin an emerging country which has a relatively conservative society.

Major Findings. The results of the study generally confirmed the findings in the global literatureon this topic. Some global findings could not be confirmed, partially due to the inherent bias in thesample selection. The biggest new factor found to influence FinTech adoption was the users’ priorexperience with a non-banking financial services provider, followed by their breadth of usage of various IT&C services and the time they spent online.

The Compliance or Non-Compliance of the Internal Audit Department of Organisations with the Guidelines Specified by the Institute of Internal Auditors(IIA) A Case Study of Star Assurance Company Ltd.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study investigated the compliance or non-compliance of organisations with the critical elements required for setting up and operating an internal audit department as expected by the Institute of Internal Auditors UK. Compliance with the Standards is mandated by the IIA for every individual who provides internal audit services The researcher used a case study to explain the relationship between the variables: the case of the internal audit department of Star Assurance Company. The researcher employed both primary and secondary data, qualitative and quantitative research methods were also used to examine the internal audit department of Star Assurance Company Ltd (SAC). A number of data collection methods were combined to verify the reliability and accuracy of the data as suggested by Yin(2003). The study used a combination of data collection tools; a Survey, Questionnaire, Relevant Corporate Documents and Observation.. Literature, which was relevant to the subject matter, was reviewed to determine the benchmarks for an effective internal audit department. The study discussed the key functions of an internal audit department and the major objectives of internal audits. The study also discussed the independence, organizational status and objectivity required for effective performance of the department. The study also discussed the role of internal auditors and the critical elements required of every effective internal audit department. The challenges faced by internal audit departments were also discussed. Useful insights were taken from the Institute of Internal Auditors guidelines and also the Sarbanes Oxley Act. A brief profile of the company, which was studied, was included in the work. The research revealed that the company had made significant efforts to comply with the requirements of the I.I.A. I concluded by making recommendations, which the company could adopt to enable them, comply more extensively with the IIA guidelines

Senior citizen as a market segment for Swedish travel industry2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The senior tourism is getting more and more attention in many countries as the importance of this market segment becomes more evident. This is strengthened by political initiative/project, where generous financial aids are offered to develop promotion and communication activities to disseminate the transnational packages and raise awareness on the tourism offer for seniors (EU-Commission, 2013) could be interpreted as a possible under-served trend within tourism. This thesis aims to give insight into how the senior tourism is defined and how it is served by the Swedish main stream travel companies. Further in this thesis the authors are trying to find an answer if the market segmentation where senior citizens would be defined as a specific market segment, would benefit the companies.

    Abstract [sv]

A Sociocybernetic Model of Sustainable Social Systems2009Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The ongoing economic crisis world around has asked for a theoretical understanding and deep analysis of what have been wrong in our economic system in specific and social system as whole. Discussions in many forums and mass media have mostly focused on a level of first order casual-effects such as bank and credit system in relation to house loans and car industries, and where and how much the stimulating packages should be distributed, etc. This is what I called a liveability level problem. A second order understanding of fundamental systems structure and social subsystems relationships however, have not been much addressed properly. This is what I called the sustainability problem. This paper will propose an epistemological model based on cybernetic feedback principle and the Activity Theory to interpret the second order problems that deeply embed in our social-economic system structure. So the liveability and sustainability are coherently discussed within a socio-cybernetic system. The first part of the paper introduces shortly principles of feedbacks from cybernetics, especially understanding the behaviours of positive and negative feedbacks. Then, the Activity Theory and related concepts from social autopoietic theory are introduced. The aim of introducing those concepts is to provide the basic elements/components to the construction of a double-loops feedback model in the second part. In the last, the current economic crisis is interpreted based on the constructed model, to verify the usability of the proposed model.

A Sustainable Information System for e-home Services2004Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

E-home related home-services (including homecare and home healthcare) in China is urgently needed. The population of aged people over 80 is increasing 5% every year in China, and to year 2050, one fourth of whole population or 0.4 billions people in China are aged staying at home. Meanwhile the government cannot afford with a national elderly care system like most western countries as Sweden. This is because China has had one-child/one-family policy since 1970’s, and this radical policy has made China step in aged society very quickly within only 20 years, while the same process took 40-80 years in western countries. Even worse, China becomes aged society when the country is still poor and under developing with GDP per capita less than 1000$, comparing to western countries with 5000 – 10000 $ when they became aged society. E-home provides China with a unique, and maybe the most effective solution to the problem. By applying effective IT&C at home, elder people are facilitated to manage their own daily life. If needed, they can always call help from their collective service centre that is located in their resident area and the collective service centre can provide with both homecare (cleaning, shopping, reparation, baby care etc.) and home healthcare (legitimate medical care). Elder people can be also monitored (if wished by all partners) both at home and out door by bearing sensors that can send singles directly to related care providers (including their children and relatives if wished). E-home will greatly increase the security of elder people, release great worry from both their children and elder people themselves, and can be afford by most people. However, e-home is more than just a technical problem, and it needs a systemic way and social-psychological study how to design e-home system. In the end, e-home system must provide with needed services to residents. I will introduce IMIS project ´Integrated Mobile Information System for Home Healthcare’ financed by Swedish Agency for Innovative Systems (VINNOVA). This project will continue to 2006, and one of the outputs will be a sustainable software platform which is based on a systemic study of social psychological factors involved in the home healthcare. I will provide with some Swedish experiences and the so called ‘Scandinavia Approach’ in conducting such complex system to my colleagues in China, and I hope the IMIS project will be also developed in China based up on some feasibility and desirability studies with some Chinese colleagues.

    Abstract [en]

By integrating system thinking and social psychology, this paper presents an Activity System Theory (AST) approach to the platform design of e-service systems in general, and e-healthcare systems in specific. In the first part, some important principles of AST and a sustainable model of human activity system are introduced. Then a project ‘Integrated Mobile Information System for Healthcare (IMIS)’ is presented to demonstrate how to construct a comprehensive platform for various complex e-service systems based on the sustainable model of AST. Our research focused on the complex e-healthcare system in Sweden, and the results showed that the model of AST can provide the designers of e-service system with a comprehensive and sustainable platform for designing various kinds of e-service system

Activity System Theory Approach to Healthcare Information System2004Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Healthcare information system is a very complex system and has to be approached from systematic perspectives. This paper presents an Activity System Theory (ATS) approach by integrating system thinking and social psychology. First part of the paper, the activity system theory is presented, especially a recursive model of human activity system is introduced. A project ‘Integrated Mobile Information System for Diabetic Healthcare (IMIS)’ is then used to demonstrate a practical application of the Activity System Theory especially in constructing healthcare information system. Our conclusion is that the activity system model can provide the service system designers with a comprehensive and integrated framework for designing healthcare information system in specific, and for designing various kinds of service systems in general.
