Current working conditions of public servants in Greece under the impact of the financial crisis2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is focused on examining, with the usage of the Job Demands – Resources model, the levels of burnout and work engagement that the public servants experience, after the effects of the unforeseen financial crisis that stroke Greece by the end of 2009. The target is to try to investigate how the current working conditions of public servants shape up after the layoffs and wage cuts that occurred, reaching respectively by average 20% and 40% decreases. Further than that using the Job Demands and Resources (JD-R) model and the statistical analysis of the obtained data we will try to suggest methods of counter-measuring the crisis-imposed negative situation in accordance to theoretical models. In order to obtain measureable data, an online survey was created with a series of questions and statements the responses of which can help in identifying important statistical measures on the working conditions of civil servants. Two organizations were targeted to participate in our survey: The Elderly Open Care Center (EOCC) KAPI Kalamarias in Thessaloniki and the Local authorities Municipality of Grevena (O.T.A. Grevena). Using two distant local authorities it is purposed to achieve a greater statistical sample variety, compare and cross validate the data results. The online survey was answered by a total 37 of employees in Thessaloniki and 29 employees in Grevena. The statistical analysis that was made on the results revealed that the public servants are currently experiencing lack of motivation due to the crisis-imposed increased workload and work resources restriction to low levels. The statistical analysis proved two hypothesis that we made: a) there is correlation between the crisis-imposed high job demands and burnout and b) the crisis-imposed decreased job resources demotivate employees and disallows them from achieving work engagement and reducing the negative effects of burnout.

Implementation av affärssystem för produktion - en fallstudie av ett medelstort företag i Sverige2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Corporate Governance Practice among Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana; Impact on Access to Credit2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background, Purpose and Problem Discussion This study, Corporate Governance Practice among SMEs in Ghana; impact on access to credit, was undertaken to bring to the fore the level of corporate governance practice among Ghanaian SMEs and what impact it has had on them accessing credit. In spite of all the argument about the advantages of corporate governance and the potential economic development that it could bring to a developing country like Ghana, its practice among the SMEs is very low though that sector forms the majority of the country’s firm tissue. In tackling this topic, both the quantitative and qualitative approach was adopted. Questionnaires were circulated to 120 SMEs in the Accra, Tema and Kumasi .metropolis through the convenience sampling. 100 responses were received and based on the responses received through these questionnaires, the following major findings came to the fore. While most SME stakeholders had heard about Corporate Governance, actual knowledge and adherence to modern day corporate governance guideline is very low. Most SMEs still maintain the CEO/Board chairman duality. . Majority of the SMEs studied did not have board committees, while some did not even know what board committees were. On the average SMEs in this study had a 4 member board; but only a small percentage had regular meetings i.e. quarterly. Most met semi-annually and annually. Very few of the SMEs in this study had directors who were external to them. Secondly, the study also revealed that commercial banks remains the most reliable source of funds for the SMEs, these banks do not make adherence to modern day corporate governance principles a reason for granting credit. The SMEs credit history, pledged security and cash flow were considered more important. Conclusion Corporate Governance practice among SMEs in Ghana is very low. This phenomenon have not had any significant impact on the SMEs access to credit. .Thus even the promise of improved access to finance, business and economic growth have not proven strong enough to make SMEs pursue strict adherence to corporate governance principles. It is recommended that government, the banks, NGOs and all other stakeholders in the SME sector pay more attention to activities that increases corporate governance awareness among SMEs in Ghana.

Should Sweden impose excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages in order to improve public health?2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In recent time, several reports have been published about a more and more unhealthy population world wide, with increasing Body Mass Index (BMI) in welfare countries, such as Sweden. Diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, which is strongly connected to a high BMI, have increased and together with them also the medical expenses for society/state. Several initiatives have been started, in different countries, to tackle these problems and some have introduced a “sugar tax” on unhealthy products, like candy and soda, which has become a well- debated subject also in Sweden today.

In this MBA master thesis, a literature study has been conducted with the goal of evaluating if an excise tax should be introduced in an efficient way on unhealthy sugar-sweetened beverages in Sweden. This case study is built on secondary data where reports and official statistics, from governments and health authorities/organizations, have been studied both for Sweden as well as from other countries. There has been a particular focus on Sweden's neighbouring countries Denmark and Finland, who has both experiences in the implementation of a “sugar tax”. Our theory is that introducing an excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages will reduce the demand and consumption of these products, which will reduce welfare disease such as obesity and diabetes and yield a tax income for the state. However it is important to have in mind that the reduced consumption also will result in less tax income from the no longer sold goods, fewer personnel employed in the producing industries etc.

The results showed that the overall sugar consumption actually has decreased in Sweden, as well as the overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. However during the same time period the average calorie consumption and BMI has continued to increase resulting in a more unhealthy population that results in increased medical expenses.

In conclusion an excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages will not solve the welfare disease problems but may positively influence health. However it comes with a price also for the state from both gains and loss in tax incomes and increased administrations costs for managing the new tax. Finally it should be noted that since sugar-sweetened beverages are unhealthy products, which do not contribute to any positive health effects, sugar taxation might still be considered.

    Abstract [sv]

Transformational Leadership and Employees Performance:: An investigation in SMEs2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In the fast changing and increasingly competitive world market environment, leadership plays a vital role in bringing out the best of employees and steering an organization to success. Among the many leadership theories developed over the years, transformational leadership (TL) has proven among others to have a positive impact on subordinate satisfaction, motivation, and performance of workers. However, the phenomena of transformational leadership and its effect on jobs satisfaction (JB), work engagement (WE) and employees’ performance (EP) as a whole have not received much research attention in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) especially in the European Union (EU). This thesis investigated the impact of TL in selected SMEs in Germany and Sweden. The results of the 73 participants of the survey revealed that TL has a great impact on EP, JS and WE in SMEs. It was also established that there is a positive correlation between WE and EP. However, the research failed to establish a link between JS and WE and also JS and EP. The research also revealed that the most dominant type of TL style in the SMEs investigated was inspirational motivation.

Does organizational identification, being a manager and complexity predict level of engagement?2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Employee engagement is of great interest for leaders. It is not surprising that leaders seek ways to influence, manage and enhance level of engagement among its employees. Instead of asking directly how engaged their workforce is, leaders often ask questions on related constructs to engagement. The objective of this research is threefold. First is to determine if organizational identification (OID) is a predictor of engagement. Second is to conclude if being a manager with direct reports predicts higher level of engagement versus non-managers. Third is to decide if complexity in an organization has a moderating contextual effect on the relationships between employee engagement, employee OID and the role as a manager with direct reports. This re-search contributes to the established theories by testing a theoretical model with variables not found to be tested empirically together before. Data was collected in a survey with 168 respondents. The validity and reliability of the data was good, upon two multiple regression analyses were completed in order to test three hypotheses. Results show significant support for two of three hypotheses. First, high employee OID predicts high employee engagement (p-value 0,000 significant at 0,05 level). This is a complement to existing literature. Leaders can practically measure OID if they are interested in understanding and predicting level of engagement in their workforce. Second, managers with direct reports predicts higher engagement versus non-managers (p-value 0,021 significant at 0,05 level). This research does not answer why such difference is found, but an analysis is provided from both a manager’s and a subordinate’s view. Third, an employee (manager or non-manager) who spend a high percentage of time in meetings requested/organized by others does not make the relationship between OID and engagement weaker (p-value 0,440 not significant at 0,05 level). This study also indicates that most managers and non-managers spend less than 30% of their work week in meetings requested/organized by someone else. This speaks for a majority of both managers and non-managers are in control over the majority of their time during a working week.

The predictive validity of the team diagnostic survey: Testing a model with performance and satisfaction as output variables2015Inngår i: Team Performance Management, ISSN 1352-7592, E-ISSN 1758-6860, Vol. 21, nr 5-6, s. 293-306Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The aims of the present study were to test the predictive validity of the Swedish version of the Team Diagnostic Survey (TDS). Design/methodology/approach – A model with both performance and satisfaction was tested with structural equation model (SEM) analyses. Participants completing the survey were employees (N, 214) across three large workplaces. Analyses were done at the group level and data from 33 teams were included in the final data material. Findings – Results from validation data indicate that the TDS has satisfactory high Cronbach’s alpha values on most factors. Results from the SEM analyses show a moderate model fit for the main model. Team-level factors predict both performance and satisfaction, while organization and coaching factors do not. Research limitations/implications – The present study was limited to a cross-sectional design, but earlier studies have shown that the accuracy of the TDS remains consistent over time. The main purpose of this study was to test the predictive validity of the instrument. Theoretical implications of the study are that a survey can be used to get a valid overall picture of the real-life work team’s effectiveness. Practical implications – Practical implications of the study are that communication between researcher and/or consultant and organizational stakeholders is made easier, as the most important factors that affect team effectiveness are identified. Originality/value – The work on the development on TDS has shown that it is possible to use a complex instrument to diagnose work groups, and this line of research is leading the way for better instruments. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Väcka intresse genom överraskningar2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Persistence of profits in the EU: How competitive are EU member countries?2018Inngår i: Empirica, ISSN 0340-8744, E-ISSN 1573-6911, ISSN 0340-8744, Vol. 46, nr 2, s. 327-351Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Profits that persist above or below the norm for prolonged periods of time reveal a lack of competition and imply a systematic misallocation of resources. Competition, if unimpeded, should restore profits to normal levels within a relatively short time frame. The dynamics of profits can thus reveal a great deal about the competitiveness of an economy. This paper estimates the persistence of profits across the European Union (EU), which adds to our understanding of the competitiveness of 18 EU member states. By using a sample of approximately 4700 firms with 51,000 observations across the time period of 1995–2013, we find differences in the persistence of short-run profits, implying that there are differences in competitiveness across the EU. The Czech Republic and Greece are among the countries with the highest profit persistence, whereas the United Kingdom is among those with the lowest persistence of profits. Furthermore, we provide evidence that there are significant permanent rents present in the EU across countries as well as in the different broad sectors across the EU. © 2018 The Author(s)

Product regulations and persistence of profits: OECD evidence2018Inngår i: Journal of Regulatory Economics, ISSN 0922-680X, E-ISSN 1573-0468, Vol. 54, nr 2, s. 147-164Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In competitive markets, profits deviating from the norm will not persist for extended periods. If unimpeded, entry and exit of firms should restore profits to competitive levels. This dynamic process is influenced by regulations that temporarily or permanently impede competition. We study how product market regulations (PMR)—as measured by the OECD—affect competition by their impact on the profit persistence (Wölfl et al. in Ten years of product market reform in OECD countries-insights from a revised PMR indicator, 2009, Product market regulation: extending the analysis beyond OECD countries, 2010). To examine profit dynamics, we follow the methodology developed by Mueller (Economica 44(176):369–380, 1977), which measures both the short run persistence of profits and the long run permanent rents. The method can be used to measure: (1) short run transitory rents; (2) long run permanent rents. To this end we use firm level data from 30 OECD countries over the period 1998–2013. Results show that PMR increase the permanent rents of firms but we find no significant effect on short run profit persistence. We conclude that PMR negatively influence competition and increase permanent rents, resulting in misallocation of resources. © 2018, The Author(s).

    Abstract [sv]

Entrepreneurship and failure: two sides of the same coin?2018Inngår i: Small Business Economics, ISSN 0921-898X, E-ISSN 1573-0913, s. 1-10Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper attempts to shed light on the nexus of relationships existing between failure, bankruptcy, institutional context, and local characteristics on one hand and entrepreneurship, firm survival, and performance on the other. The aim is to provide a larger vantage point from which to read the research included in this issue with the overall ambition to contribute to a better understanding of our entrepreneurial societies and the role of failure within markets. In this respect, the focus here is mainly on the institutions governing the bankruptcy procedures which do much more than simply regulating the exit of insolvent firms and protecting creditors’ investments, minimizing the social cost of failures. They set up the revolving doors through which creditors can reinvest the recovered capital in new entrepreneurial projects and failed entrepreneurs can bring back to the market their skills and their entrepreneurial spirit for fostering new and hopefully successful ventures. Therefore, by managing bankruptcy, the institutions are not only protecting the economy. Instead, they have become a tool of economic policy, devoted to the delicate issue of regulating a physiological event to the market while avoiding too much waste of resources. In a more positive perspective, managing insolvency and failure is also a mean to strengthen competitiveness and growth, making it possible to stimulate the market in reshuffling skills and resources into new activities. A deeper understanding can in turn contribute to the implementation of better and more efficient policies by integrating bankruptcy as a natural component of firm and market life. © 2018 The Author(s)

Aiding the implementation of autonomus machines in dynamic environments2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Background

It can be observed that our society is heading more and more towards automation. Autonomous machines show large potential and are being used progressively often in a range of different areas and tasks. They are increasing the productivity and transforming jobs and industries. However, the implemented systems of autonomous machines are usually specified for certain conditions, in structured and static environments. Making the implementation very contextual to the environment it is in. Dynamic environments, is something that is continuously changing or being changed, meaning a lot of challenges for the implementation and operation of something autonomous.

    Objectives

The purpose of this study is to investigate how to help the conditions for implementation of autonomous machines in dynamic environments. The sites and machines in the construction industry fulfill the described context well and is therefore chosen as the main field of study for this thesis.

    Method

A main case study exploration has been used to disclose the result. Including different methods of data gathering such as literature research, interviews, observations, field visits, and workshops. Data has also been collected in form of learnings from prototypes and experiments conducted throughout the study.

    Results

The results evaluate how the aiding of the implementation and operation of autonomous machines could be done in dynamic environments such as the construction sites. It considers working at remote areas without human assistance, the external information needed for the autonomous machines, the different technologies that could be used, and how to take a first step towards an autonomous future. A concept solution is presented, which could be implemented today and used to help the implementation and operation of autonomous machines.

    Conclusion

The findings in this study indicates that the machines need to understand elements in dynamic environments to be able to conduct meaningful tasks. For this there is a need for external information through different technologies, making element visible in a continuously changing structure. Material management is one of the essential elements that needs to be made visible for the machines. The results can be introduced today through the concept and be developed along with the rest of the technology to make the adaptation and implementation easier.

Key Factors for Creating an Innovative Context – a Study of the Development of the BMW i32014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Innovation has been identified as essential for organisations to stay competitive in existing or entirely new markets, as well as a necessity for long term survival. The ability to innovate is affected by the external environment in the industry and by the internal environment within the organisation. We focused on internal parameters that influenced an innovative development project in the automobile industry. An organisation may shape its internal environment by reducing hurdles as well as strengthening key factors that foster innovations. We combined factors identified by a literature review to build our theoretical framework consisting of seven internal organisational parameters that may form an innovative context. These are: top management support, advocates for intrapreneurship (entrepreneurship within existing organisations), the physical environment, organisational structure, resources, rewards and risk taking. The purpose of this paper was to identify these internal organisational factors and their importance in creating an innovative context in the BMW i3 development project. Our data collection consisted of ten interviews of management and employees involved in the BMW i3 project in which the key factors were addressed. The participants also had the opportunity to rank the importance of the identified internal organisational factors. Our findings showed that all factors have some importance in creating an innovative context. We find that top management support and advocates for intrapreneurship were the most important factors, followed by risk taking. The importance of the factors showed differences as well as similarities between the literature and our case. Management support, being an inherently wide term and most often including both top management support, advocates and other elements, was found to be of high importance in similar studies as well. A discrepancy was found regarding rewards, which was found to be important in similar studies but was ranked as least important in our case. This study contributes to the knowledge about organisational factors that should be considered by firms that strive to create an innovative context. The lessons gleamed from this study can be useful in typical innovative projects in the automotive industry and other technology industries.

    Abstract [sv]

Innovation measurement & activities for manufacturing companies2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Today's business environment has become increasingly competitive, which is partly due to an expansion in globalization coupled with higher consumer demands. This places greater demands on flexibility and consciously of innovation. Traditional innovation measurement focuses on measuring output, which means that it can take years to evaluate and map the innovation process. The aim of the following project is to identify activities that enable companies to monitor and develop their innovative activities. The metrics are tools that help organizations control and develop innovations, to strengthen their innovation process. The study was initiated with a systematic literature review with the objective to highlight important aspects of innovation and innovation measurement. Empirical data was collected through the qualitative method, where 13 semi-structured interviews were conducted. Three of the interviews were with researchers that have knowledge in the field of innovation. The remaining interviews were conducted with employees at case company Dynapac. Based on the theoretical and empirical findings, a definition of innovation has been identified for the manufacturing sector. Within the case company, the challenge was to analyse the current metrics and develop future metrics. The researchers reveal the importance of implementing a measurement system that drives activities related to the development of innovative work and capabilities, to ensure continuity. Ten metrics have been identified for the innovation process. These have been categorized into input, process, and output to guide companies in the innovation process. The metrics were categorized by four types: capability, organization, market and financial. The objectives with the metrics are to capture the full range of the innovation process and the activities that are relevant to each metrics. The metrics are actively promoting keeping track or supporting reflection about innovation activities.

Leadership of Introverts: An exploratory study of how introvert managers lead in Sweden2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of the present study was to shed light on the relatively unknown field of introvert leadership and to identify how introverted leaders use their innate personality to become effective and successful leaders. Design/methodology/approach – Survey methodology was used to assess the occurrence of introvert leaders in a company. Also, six introvert managers working in knowledge-intensive companies were interviewed and asked about how they use introvert traits in their leadership. Findings – The study results show that introvert leaders do exist. Furthermore, the results from the study indicate that the traits the introverted leader embrace the most are engaged listening, taking quiet time, having focused and deep conversations and a methodical and structured way of working. These traits were used in an informing, consulting and supporting way in order to engage subordinates, solve conflicts, making decision and influencing others as well as in strategic planning. The findings suggest that introvert leadership can be connected to a participative or leadership-member exchange leadership style. Research implications – The research findings contribute to the understanding of introvert leadership and how introvert traits are used in engaging and empowering subordinates, conflict handling, decision-making and influencing others. Practical implication – The findings in this study have shown that introvert traits can be as powerful as extrovert traits in leadership and hence the common perception that a leader needs to possess extroverted traits as well as charisma in order to be successful needs to be revisited.

Potential Success Indicators in Early Stages of Energy Liberalization Processes: The Mexican Energy Reform Case.2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Energy Industry liberalization processes have brought different results around the world depending on the context of the country or region where they take place. The Mexican energy reform opened the market for private companies to participate in the electricity generation. Currently, this reform has been in place for almost four years.

Several approaches have been used to measure the success of the electric market liberalization in different regions. Different authors have used indicators such as the grassroots initiatives or the reduction of subsidies; still, its applicability is limited to mature stages of the liberalization process.

The Mexican energy reform opens the opportunity to study the liberalization process in its early stages. The present study considers by the approach presented by Tulloch, Diaz-Rainey & Premachandra (2017) proposing four restructuring streams, to overcome to difficulty off evaluating the early results of the reform in an industry still evolving actual company details are studies to assess the success or failure of the liberalization of the Mexican energy sector.

This paper will follow a single case study structure based on the whole Mexican Energy Market and focused on the Electric Market. The case study addresses the following research question: “How implementation indicators reflect the potential success of an energy liberalization processes? This research question aims to find out potential early indicators which can be deemed as determining the success or failure of the energy market liberalization process. By using the Mexican case, we aim to contrast the existing research and experiences in other countries to further understand the dynamics of energy liberalization processes.

The energy market in Mexico has experienced growing competition from players in the energy sectors and forms of energy exploited both producing positive effects on the utility companies’ profitability. The market has also seen an increasing share in renewables, increased power generation and an increasingly greater focus on innovation in the energy sector. The results point to the complexity of the energy market and the role that specific market characteristics play in the success or failure of the regularization process.

Considering the empiric results, we identify early success indicators such as the introduction of new competitors and the boost of renewable energy, pointing towards a successful energy liberalization process in Mexico.

Three early indicators are proposed to be used to identify a successful energy liberalization process: i) the introduction of new competitors, ii) reforms on subsidies and iii) the growth of renewables. The co-existence of all of these indicators during the implementation of an energy liberalization process suggests that it was performed successfully, at least at its early phase.

The Mexican experience gives us first-hand experience in the early phases of an energy liberalization process. It is clear according to the empirical results that without the successful implementation of the energy reform, the Mexican market would not be able to incorporate such technologies at the current pace.

Further research is required to confirm the current findings in later stages and through different industries. Considering that the market conditions are continually evolving and that the current conditions might be undeveloped, the profit levels of these company might suffer drastic changes during the following years. Other aspects such as the subsidy levels and the electricity price performance represent additional research paths.

The Financial Value of Gamification: An Explorative Event Study to Investigate Investors Reactions to Gamification2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The use of gamification has increased in companies in recent years and is used among other things to accelerate learning, increase motivation and engagement. Gamification is defined as the use of game elements in a non-game context. This study aims to investigate whether the use of gamification raises the financial value of a company. The purpose of the study is to expand the knowledge of gamification so that it can be used more efficiently and more frequently in businesses. The research was conducted with an event study on companies that are listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. With the theory of the efficient market hypothesis as a foundation, investors' willingness to buy shares in a company as a direct measure of news publishing on a company's gamification use was examined. The result, which is based on 91 articles from Swedish news sources, illustrates that news about companies' use of gamification does not have a significant impact on their share price. Therefore, in line with the efficient market hypothesis, the news about gamification does not increase the value of the companies, which is the conclusion of this study. The result also shows that the choice of gamification technology or industry that the company is active in does not have an impact on the significance of the results. The study concludes that a correlation between gamification and a company's financial value may exist, although the results of this study indicate the contrary.

Diffusion of Nanotechnology to Businesses(Survey Nine Nordic Universities)2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The emergence of nanotechnology as a general purpose technology has introduced a new dimension to science and technology and has a ffected various technological domains. Thus, it is not a homogeneous technology, but rather a group of related technologies. The inherent potential of nanotechnology and its economic benefi t have persuaded many countries to invest billions in research and development of nanotechnology. The evidence implies that nano science has shifted from a theoretical to applied phase since basic research moves toward engineering fields. However, delivering the result of research to the market and entering into the commercialization process requires proper infrastructure, experience in manufacturing process, knowledge of marketing strategies and indeed an investment as engine of any business. In this process universities play a signifi cant role in linking science and innovation, particularly in an emerging domain such as nanotechnology. This study explores the available mechanisms of technology transfer in nanotechnology. Di ffusion of nanotechnology into the business is examined in the nine Nordic universities and the linkage between universities and the fi rms is investigated from the university perspective. The main research issues addressed include the mechanisms of technology transfer, the impact of interdisciplinary of nanotechnology, the interaction of the university and firm, the role of policy makers and intermediary organizations in the di ffusion of nanotechnology and the faculty attitudes. The method used include data analysis based on a web-based questionnaire. The descriptive statistics and an analytical modeling are used on the original data collected through this questionnaire.

Customer perceived value and the importance of information visualization in a B2B context: Case study of a Swedish low-volume, process-oriented manufacturing company2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

It was Thomas Babington Macaulay who once stated that “… logicians may reason about abstractions. But the great mass of men must have images”. Recent research on visualization within the manufacturing industry has been focusing around the notion of how to improve performance measures, such as the effectiveness and efficiency of completing a task. Consequently, this led to the dimension of user experience in regard to a visualization becoming relatively neglected. Furthermore, it is mentioned that concepts which are created based on how they are perceived by the customer, have shown to be of significance when creating customer value. Consequently, the purpose of this thesis was to shine light on both of the dimensions of visualization, user performance and user experience, and to study their influence on customer perceived value (CPV) in a business-to-business (B2B) relationship. This thesis was designed as a single case study of a Swedish low-volume, process oriented manufacturing company. Moreover, the case study included two units of analysis, representing current clients involved in two different projects with the company at which the case study was conducted. It is stated that one of the application areas of visualization lies in communication and it can be utilized in order to effectively convey certain information. The information which was in focus in the focal study was the information which is collected during quality control activities performed during the manufacturing process. The findings of the thesis suggest that certain aspects of visualization can have an influence on the functional and emotional dimensions of CPV in a B2B relationship. The conceptually proposed model provides an expanded view on the dimensions of visualization and helps to demonstrate how they stand in relation to the dimensions of CPV, as well as the dimensions used to measure relationship strength in a B2B context. Hereby, the evidence collected during the case study demonstrates that certain relationships between visualization and CPV are suggested to be eminent empirically as well. Thus, suggesting that visualization is an important factor to consider for practitioners in their communication with the customer.

Arbetsförmedlares bemötande gentemot funktionsnedsatta arbetssökanden: lära av bemötande2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Impact on Strategy For Small IT Consultancy Companies: A Study of  Low Unemployment Rate2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 poäng / 60 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Unemployment rate is all time low in Europe and this results in shortage of skilled workers. At same time technology changes are on their boom which puts new requirements of skills including diversifying competencies. The companies like consultancy faces issues to find right people with right skills and at right time. This unavailability of resources impacts the strategic goal of company. Smaller companies need to compete with mid-size and large companies over the same skilled workforce. Due to the lack of branding and company recognition, this can cripple the companies to grow and gather a completive advantage. Previous work has failed to address this issue, especially related to the smaller IT consultancies which is the fastest growing segment. The 99% of all business in Europe represents by small or medium size companies. IT consultancy companies represented the most growing and major contributor in value creation in information and communication sector in Europe. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to answer in what way the low unemployment rate affects the strategical process and execution for small IT consultancy companies. Furthermore, this study looked into the role of recruitment process to attract and retain skilled employees. A qualitative approach combined with semi-structured interviews was used as the main methodology to gather empirical data and answer the key problems of this study. The semi-structured interviews were chosen due to the possibility to give the interviewers a freedom to speak and explain moderately, especially strategy processes, which are different from one company to other ones. This study found that small IT consultancy companies had little or no formal structure in the strategical processes in relation to the literature available in the topic, but still highlighted and expressed that strategy is important for the companies. Although if small IT companies want to grow, they must rethink the organizational structure. All studied companies are providing high salaries, freedom of work, technology learning, and job satisfaction as a key tool to attract talent. All companies in general asked the most critical questions on how to grow their business with the basis of their own limitations. Unfortunately, none of the companies reviewed and monitored their objectives on frequent and regular basis.  This study found that the low unemployment rate plays a critical role which can increase the profit margin, but cannot increase the number of employees and potentially minimize the importance of the strategical process. The study also found that low unemployment rate creates a healthy competitive environment where all large and small consultancy companies enables each other to grow instead of competing.

Leadership in IT, employees’ motivation and retention.2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Employee turnover and retention is a major concern in the IT industry. Being a growing sector, the importance of minimizing turnover and understanding employee’s motivation towards retention cannot be ignored by leadership. This study was created to investigate the effect of different leadership styles on employee motivation and retention within the IT industry. Authors tried to understand whether transactional or transformational leadership style would encourage motivation and retention. The data for this study was collected through an online survey based on 63 closed-ended questions on demographics, leadership style, motivation and retention. This survey was distributed to IT employees in different parts of Europe. A sample of 129 responses was gathered. This data was afterwards analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).The results obtained in this study confirm that transformational leadership positively influences employees’ retention, not only directly but also indirectly, through employee’s intrinsic motivation, which would be in line with previous studies and literature. Such a positive influence was not found, though, for transactional leadership style, which, according to the results, does not have a major influence on employees’ motivation and not at all on retention.

An extension of the Gadget Loving model to include cultural dimensions2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Gadgets are novel products that have software applications loaded into hardware and software platforms. Their development and marketing costs companies hundreds of millions of dollars, yet the failure rate in the marketplace is very high. Central to gadget marketing is the notion that, when consumers are reached via technologically and socially influential people, the rate and speed of adoption of new innovations increases. The seminal research of Bruner & Kumar (2007a) defined a scale for Gadget Lovers, those technologically and socially influential people. Shoham & Pesämaa (2013) later extended the Gadget Loving research. Both studies did not include cultural dimensions. Research from a number of authors support that cultural factors have an influence in the process of adopting innovations. This Thesis proposes and quantitatively tests an extension to the Gadget Loving model that includes cultural dimensions. Following mainly Tolba & Mourad (2011), the extended model proposed in this Thesis adds Individualism and Uncertainty Avoidance as the two key cultural antecedents to Gadget Loving. The quantitative research is focused in Sweden and Finland. The results of this Thesis provide strong support for Individualism being a key antecedent to Gadget Loving. Only weak support is found for Uncertainty Avoidance at p<0.1.

Bestraffning av normbrytare. En undersökning i hur grupper i onlinespel bestraffar sina normbrytare.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Studentens perspektiv på feedbackprocessen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Materialet samlades in genom intervjuer.

Funktionsorienterad kontra flödesorienterad produktionslayout: -Produktionskapacitetseffekter vid layoutförändring vid fabrikstillverkning av bostäder2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

BREAKING THE COGNITIVE DIMENSION OF LOCAL PATH DEPENDENCE: AN ENTREPRENEURIAL PERSPECTIVE2016Inngår i: Geografiska Annaler, Series B: Human Geography, ISSN 0435-3684, Vol. 98, nr 3, s. 239-253Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Few attempts have been made to consider the role of individual activities in path dependence. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how local entrepreneurial activities can lead to a break in the cognitive local path. The theoretical framework rests on the literature on path dependence, but focuses mainly on cognitive frames as carriers of path-dependent behaviour. A qualitative case study has been used to analyse the formation and breaking of a local cognitive path through individual activities. Four main conclusions can be drawn. First, cognitive paradigms explain why the degree of adaptability differs between locations. Second, external shocks are translated to local change through individual activities. Third, acknowledging cognitive barriers to individual behaviour, the important role of outsiders is highlighted for breaking the cognitive path. Fourth, the long durability of cognitive paradigms and the importance of outsiders suggest the emergence of a parallel, alternative cognitive path.

History and geography matter: The cultural dimension of entrepreneurship2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation deals with the rise of new industries through entrepreneurial activities. The aim is to investigate how differences in contexts might encourage or discourage entrepreneurial activities. This contextualization of entrepreneurship enhanced our understanding of when, how and why entrepreneurial activities happen.

Entrepreneurship is recognized to be a spatially uneven process and, in addition to previous research that has examined the actions of individual entrepreneurs, we also need to understand the context in which entrepreneurship occurs. We have a good understanding of how structural conditions like industry structure, organization structure and agglomeration effects influence the context, but we know little about how the social dimension of the context is the transmitting medium between structural conditions for entrepreneurship and the decision to act upon identified entrepreneurial opportunities. Following this line of argument, this dissertation is built on the assumption that entrepreneurship is a social phenomenon which gives strong arguments for including local culture in entrepreneurship research.

The temporal persistence and the pronounced differences of culture and structural conditions between places reflect path-dependent processes. I therefore use regional path dependence as an interpretative lens to study the contextualization of entrepreneurship in two Swedish cities.

Although each context is unique, some generalizations can be drawn from the four individual papers in this dissertation. The first is that industrial legacy leads to the formation of a distinct local culture and that the persistency of this culture influences the subsequent entrepreneurial activities in new local industries. The second is that this persistency of culture suggests that entrepreneurs who are outsiders, geographically or socially, are the driving forces for the emergence of new local industries. Finally, new industry emergence is a result of a combination of exogenous forces and initial local conditions, but it is the entrepreneurial individuals who translate these forces and conditions into entrepreneurial activities.

New perspectives on innovative entrepreneurship and path dependence2014Inngår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing, ISSN 1742-5360, E-ISSN 1742-5379, Vol. 6, nr 4Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper uses path dependence as an interpretive lens to examine the relationship between innovative entrepreneurship and regional development. A literature review of path dependence explains why that concept is relevant for this paper. This paper reaches four conclusions about the relationship. First, in the study of innovative entrepreneurship in a regional context, the technological, social and cognitive dimensions should be taken into consideration. Second, the effect of the different types of innovative entrepreneurship on path dependence depends on specific, regional situations. Third, the dominant regional network forms an institutional foundation that may either hinder or support innovative entrepreneurship. Fourth, innovative entrepreneurs who introduce new knowledge from outside the region are more likely to alter the regional path.

    Local culture as a context for entrepreneurial activities2017Inngår i: European Planning Studies, ISSN 0965-4313, E-ISSN 1469-5944, Vol. 25, nr 9, s. 1556-1574Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines how an industrial legacy leads to the formation of a distinct local culture and how the culture’s survival provides a context for the subsequent entrepreneurial activities in new local industries. The discussion about culture as a key driver of entrepreneurship and economic growth is well established in the academic debate. However, we know little about how culture is formed. Through a qualitative case study of two polar Swedish cities, the study highlights four key factors which are instrumental in the formation of local culture: initial conditions, characteristics of key players, network activities and composition of newcomers. We show how the local entrepreneurs responded to the underlying assumptions of the two different cultures.

Developing and sustaining new regional industrial paths: investigating the role of ‘outsiders’ and factors shaping long-term trajectories2019Inngår i: Industry and Innovation, ISSN 1366-2716, E-ISSN 1469-8390, Vol. 26, nr 7, s. 795-819Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article casts light on the development of new regional industrial paths. We explore factors explaining why regional industries with similar early path development trajectories may exhibit diverging outcomes in the longer run and pay particular attention to the role of ‘outsiders’ in the initiation and further development of regional industrial paths. Drawing on a comparative case study of IT industries in Linköping and Karlskrona, two medium-sized Swedish city regions, we find that the inflow of outsiders was an important driver of early path development processes. However, we find that the interplay between regional preconditions and arriving outsiders, and between outsiders and existing actors, substantially shaped the long-term sustainability of the industrial paths in our study. In particular, the role of agency in fostering positive self-reinforcing mechanisms and structure–agency dynamics are highlighted as key factors for understanding how new industrial development paths are unfolding in the longer term. © 2018, © 2018 The Author(s). Business model innovation within a Swedish manufacturing company: A study on the impacts of digitalization in a mid-size Swedishmanufacturing company2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Rapid innovations in technology during the past decades has enabled new business possibilities, which in manyareas has outcompeted old business models. Especially small companies are having problems keeping up inthe process of reevaluating their business model with regards to the possibilities of new technologies.

The focus in this thesis has been to describe the process of moving to a digital business and the use of digitaltechnologies by changing the business model and value-producing opportunity. This especially for the inSweden important manufacturing industry. Our purpose was to find a way on how companies should workwith their business model and what they had to do, and to find proper tools to help them to be successful withtheir digital transformation. This was done by a literature study, surveys, and interviews with a company weretheir business model where analyzed with help of the Business Model Canvas.

We found in the theory typical enablers for a successful digital transformation, such as top management skills, organizations capabilities, aligned vision and strategy to be at least as important as a technology, which wasalso supported by our empirical findings. We also found in empirical findings that the Business Mode

A Flexible Software Environment for Computer Vision2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The advancement of open source libraries is playing a key role in today's world. These libraries are being used in most of the real time applications .It is not an easy task to develop a library which is portable and having hundreds of algorithms in it and which is available for free. Here we have Opencv which has hundreds of functions and is being downloaded by millions and the other library PCL is also extensively used open source library for 3D point clouds. The major problem in using these libraries comes when we are trying to integrate these libraries In this thesis we have developed a class library based on open source libraries (opencv, pcl) which has been designed and implemented in c++ programming. The developed class library gives its user portability, simplicity, collabratibility and extendibility. The class library uses qt framework provides a lab environment for students and researchers and also gives the freedom to extend classes. Besides its practical value, the developed class library teaches both object oriented programming and computer vision. The students spend more time in integration of different open source libraries, so in order to save the time spent by the students in integration and also to make the user use the functions in reliable way. This class library helps the students to overcome this problem and understand both the object oriented programming methodology as well as the Image processing and computer vision. This library is mainly built to maintain portability and extendibility which is the main goal of this thesis.

Streamlining the Voice of the Customer: A study exploring Voice of the Customer at Company X2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

One of the components of customer focus in a company is voice of the customer (VOC). Companies use the VOC for guiding them in producing products and services that help meet customer needs.  There exists numerous VOC methods from literature for collecting VOC data, and it often recommends using multiple VOC methods to obtain better insight into consumer use, needs and problems.   In addition, the literature recommends companies to have a unified data collection process to effectively collect, integrate and understand the VOC.

In this explorative case study, the authors investigate the VOC methods used by Company X and how VOC data collected from various methods are aggregated and employed at Company X.  Company X is a large bus manufacturing company with a global presence and annual revenue of 3.1 billion USD. The study intends to understand if the academic recommendations reflect VOC practices at Company X.

The results from the study find that the criterion for choosing VOC methods at Company X is determined by the complexity of methods.  Elaborate methods, such as focus groups and ethnography that help in complementing more commonly used methods, such as interviews and questionnaires, to capture necessary customer information, are not preferred due to being time and resource intensive.   Furthermore the need for a structured process to aggregate VOC data from different sources is felt across the organization at Company X.  However, the high cost of implementing a VOC process, resource constraints and un-evident benefits of a structured VOC process are found to be the main reasons that work against implementation of a structured process.

    Abstract [sv]

The Link Between Communication and Information Technology / non-Information Technology Relationship2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

There is a considerable interest in the role of organizational interpersonal relationships regarding communication, in supporting management. The problem stated in our thesis discloses, that one of the hidden reasons for not satisfied IT / non-IT Relationship are difficulties in communication. The cause of these difficulties are: (1) inadequate communication between different organizational units by imposing a variety of purposes and perception of the world from different perspectives. Opportunities of information systems are not fully utilized due to differences in the perception of their mutual roles between IT and non-IT units. (2) IT-related professionals believe that demands on them are too high and beyond the scope of their duties. (3) Non-IT-related professionals, in turn, claim that their use of advanced IT solutions requires the active involvement of the IT. In this thesis we shall analyze stated in topic aspects using as mechanism, the questionnaire, that will be released among the employees representing different organizational levels, because as stated by Labovitz and Rosansky (1997, p. 45, cited in Prieto and Carvalho, 2011) alignment is not only for senior management, it is a universal and alive form of interpersonal interactions. On the basis of the questionnaire given to Polish respondents representing different sectors, the thesis explicates ways in which interactions are aligned or misaligned. The goal of this thesis is to examine selected elements from different maturity models' and questionnaires that concern on ways in which human beings communicate each other in professional world, instead of verification of appropriateness, scalability aspects or replication of any existing alignment model or framework. The thesis explores how the goals of existing and maintaining interpersonal relationships are accomplished through the professional interactions in line business (non-IT) – information technology (IT). The analysis will focus on communication be or not to be concerning on required in IT / non-IT Relationships, skills to provide substantial cooperation and performance towards strategic organizational goals. Explorations and researching approach focus on relationships between information technology and business area, instead of examining and naming this phenomenon as alignment issues. The effective collaboration requires that all parties involved were (1) informed about the progress of the work, the decisions taken and the reasons for them. (2) It is crucial to document requirements of individual departments (division of the project into several phases and set targets for each of them). The problem of communication in cooperation not only affects the relationship between representatives of management, IT and non-IT. It is broader and involves the risk of lack of acceptance among employees of front and back office. Insufficient information on the changes can lead to a lack of confidence in the system, improper use of the implemented solutions and also to reject the effects of the implementation by the staff. Often we say that the reason is the lack of a universal way to achieve a match, but companies differ from each other their business objectives, structure, processes, environments in which they operate and therefore they need different ways to achieve particular IT / non-IT fusion-like perspective and attitude. Many businesses promote and develop an organizational culture based on the promotion of competition and conflict between departments, business units and employees than building a team on the basis of cooperation. Our thesis discusses the degree of achievement communication-based relationship based on multiple angles, using primary data gathered through the questionnaire released among the companies located in Poland. Data from a questionnaire of different companies provide varying support for the proposed relationships.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Drivkrafter för energieffektiviseringar: Studie av stora svenska tillverkningsföretag2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

BackgroundEnvironmental issues have become relevant all over the world. This has led to customers putting high demands on company that manufactures the product they purchase, to ensure that it’s been manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner. One way for companies to reduce their environmental impact is to improve the organizations energy efficiency. There is, however, a lack of knowledge of what truly affects the companies’ incentives to implement these investments. The research has not yet succeeded in mapping out whether the companies’ perception of the driving forces can be explained by means of its corporate characteristics.

ObjectivesThe objective of this study is to contribute with knowledge of what is affecting the companies’ incentives to invest in energy efficiency improvements. The purpose is to study which driving forces affect the companies most when they have the opportunity to implement an energy-efficient property- technical investment. Furthermore, the intention is to investigate whether the proximity of large Swedish manufacturing companies to the end customer influences their perception of the importance of these driving forces. The result of the study can be used as an aid for suppliers of energy-efficient systems as they through this research can gain knowledge of what their customers value in order to adapt their marketing accordingly.

MethodsThe study was carried out using a quantitative analysis where primary data was collected through a questionnaire sent out by e-mail. In order to ensure a high reliability and validity in the study, the questionnaire was designed with the help of already tested and validated secondary data. This questionnaire was then sent out to large manufacturing companies in Sweden and a collection of 121 replies was made. The collected material was processed in SPSS using relevant analyzes and tests in order to answer the research questions of the study.

ResultsOnly the importance of one driving force differed between companies that had different proximity to the end customer. Deeper analysis, on the other hand, reviled that the importance of 11 driving forces differed between companies that had different energy intensities.

ConclusionsThe perception of the importance of government subsidies when investing in energy-efficient systems differs between companies that have different proximity to the end customer. An increased understanding of the difference in perceived significance can be obtained if consideration is also given to the company’s energy intensity.
