Can Innovation be lean? Lean’s Influence on Innovation2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis deals with the analysis of Lean’s influence on innovation. The applied theoretical framework combines the Lean theory represented by the seven major Lean practices identified by Olivella et al. (2008) with Kline and Rosenberg’s (1986) chain-linked model of innovation and the classification of innovation types of Cooper (1998). In the present work it was examined how Lean is influencing innovation when it is implemented in an innovation-oriented environment. In order to answer this research question, six expert interviews with CEOs, Executives and Consultants from five different industries were conducted and subjected to a qualitative content analysis. As a result of this examination, it has been shown that Lean may impede as well as complement innovation. On the one hand Lean may complement innovation by freeing up resources and providing an appropriate environment for innovation characterized by a learning character and multi-functional and multi-skilled knowledge workers operating according to scientific methods. On the other hand Lean may impede innovation by reducing slack, risks, and variability, which are arguably important to innovation. Furthermore, it has been shown that the innovation process is influenced negatively most likely at its early stage, and that Lean is rather related to innovation types which are process-oriented. The collected data were found to be fruitful in answering the question of how Lean is influencing innovation. However, questions regarding the innovation process and innovation types could not be answered satisfactorily. Here, further research is needed.

Does gender diversity on the board of directors affect the financial performance?: A study of Swedish companies registered on Stockholm NASDAQ OMX2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis examines if gender diversity on corporate boards affect the financial performance for large, mid and small cap firms on the Swedish OMX during the years 2005-2013. In corporate governance, the board of directors is an important control mechanism that could enhance the company’s financial performance. Board of directors have the potential to render valuable service to the company in shaping of its strategic development. Traditionally, main parts of the boards have been and are dominated by men, the boards are not balanced in the gender diversity perspective.

In Sweden, there is a debate about introducing quota systems to increase the gender diversity on boards for public companies. There are many motivational factors why the number of women on boards should be increased. A gender diverse board could be considered as a competitive advantage that leads to developed knowledge base, and improved creativity and innovation, increased competition, new perspectives in the decision process or an attractive working environment. However, there are also research that indicates that homogeneous groups are the most efficient in decision making and consensus.

This thesis investigates if the representation of women on the board of directors has any effect on the company’s financial performance and if the effect is positive or negative. Hence, the research question is: "Does gender diversity on the board of directors affect the financial performance?"

The majority of the most cited research articles in this research field report from other countries than Sweden. Moreover, the research articles on the Swedish market either lack statistical significance, did not investigate long term effects or did not perform a fundamental regression analysis.

In this thesis we examine the relationship between women on the board of directors and financial performance in public companies listed on the Stockholm NASDAQ OMX stock exchange in Sweden during 2005-2013. The data in this thesis was collected from 250 public companies. The data was processed through a data analysis methodology in order to extract useful information to extract valid data for the regression analysis.

We provide an in-depth statistical analysis in this thesis. We use correlation analysis and regression analysis using data averaged over the following three time periods; 2005-2007, 2008-2010 and 2011-2013. Four different financial performance measures were evaluated for each of the three time periods; Return on Equity, Return on Invested Capital, Return on Sales and Return on Assets.

A stepwise backwards elimination model was used to achieve at least a 95% confidence interval for the results in the model. The regression analysis shows that the research question is valid on a 0.05 significance level. Hence, this thesis shows that women on the board of directors affect financial performance positively for all financial performance measures.

The results of this thesis supports the research question that gender diversity on the board of directors affect the financial performance positively.

Belöningar ur motivationssynpunkt? – Icke monetära belöningar vs. Monetära belöningar2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

A study of recruitment channels in Sweden. Which factors shape businesses recruitment behaviour?2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines an area of the recruitment process in today’s labour market from the point of view of the employer. More specifically, an analysis is conducted with respect to the recruitment channels that Swedish firms utilise in the present days, combined with a detailed discussion of each of the recruitment channels’ comparative advantages and disadvantages. In addition to that the factors that determine employers’ selection of recruitment channel are examined and the relative importance of each of these factors is assessed. Furthermore, the degree of importance that firms place on finding the best available candidate for a vacant position will be investigated. Finally, it will be discussed whether or not the recent global financial crisis has lead to changes as far as firms’ choice of recruitment channel(s) is/are concerned. The study reveals among others that contacts and recruitment agencies are the two most highly utilised recruitment channels, especially for the hiring of individuals who possess high levels of skill. Similarly, the analysis indicates that locating high quality candidates is the most influential factor for employers who are seeking new candidates. Other results reveal, among others, that recruitment costs are of comparably higher importance to smaller organisations than to larger ones, that large firms use formal recruitment channels to a larger extent than small ones do, and that a substantial amount of companies have changed their choice of recruitment channel since the occurrence of the global financial crisis.

    Abstract

Title: Network construction and innovation performance – the variation of search depth and search breadth in Open Innovation networks.

Authors: Robin Cianelli, Jenny Nilsson and Sarah Wennström

    Supervisor: Henrik Sällberg

Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology

Course: Bachelor’s thesis in Business Administration, 15 credits

The study aimed to investigate how companies construct there open innovation networks and how they in turn affects the innovation presentation. It was distinguishing between the product innovation and the process innovation to investigate if the companies constructed different open innovation networks for different innovation types. This was investigated by looking at how many different extern collaborators the companies were using and how deep these collaborations were. The studies hypotheses were that the search depth and the search width would have a positive influence on the innovation presentation and that the search depth and the search width would have a greater impact for the product innovation than the process innovation. To investigate this a selection of 91 small and middle big Swedish companies in the manufacturing industry where asked to answer a web survey and our collected data was processed by multiple regression analyzes. The results showed that search depth and width in open innovation networks had a positive influence on the innovation performance when the company wanted to do product innovations, but only search depth showed a significant positive correlation for process innovation. This could be explained with the fact that processes innovations are very complex and can look very different even within the same industry.

Projektarbete: ur ett meningsskapandeperspektiv2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Multi-Agent Systems for Distributed Control of District Heating Systems2005Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes an investigation into the use of multi-agent systems for automatic distributed control of district heating systems. A district heating system is basically composed of production units, a distribution network, and a large number of consumer substations. Operators of district heating systems have several, often conflicting, goals, e.g., to satisfy customers and to minimize production costs. Current substations are purely reactive devices, making local decisions without taking into account the global state. Moreover the substations determine the flows in all parts of the district heating system. The optimal operation of the district heating system is therefore limited to providing sufficiently high temperature and pressure to all customers. The approach studied in this thesis is to equip substations with software agents to form a multi-agent system. The purpose is to dynamically control the district heating system using demand-side-management strategies. Demand-side-management are claimed to have a number of positive effects, e.g., lower production costs, reduced usage of fossil fuel, dimensioning production capacity for a lower effect/reserve alternatively with maintained dimensioning increase the number of consumers. To our knowledge this is the first work that implements automated demand-side-management strategies in district heating systems. The fundamental idea behind the approach is that a large number of local decisions with apparently small impact, together have large impact on the overall system performance without reducing the quality of service delivered. In order to evaluate the approach, a fine-grained simulation tool that simulates a complete district heating system was built. This work included the development of novel simulation models, often by integrating existing ones. The simulation tool simulates a district heating system second by second and dynamically supports interaction at each time step with the multi-agent system. The tool enables detailed performance analysis of both district heating systems as well as of different strategies of the control system. Results from simulation studies indicate that the approach makes it possible to reduce production while maintaining the quality of service. The study also shows that it is possible to control the trade-off between quality of service and degree of surplus production as well as the possibility of extending the system with new consumers without increasing production capacity. In another study, a experiment in a controlled physical environment, two agent-based approaches are evaluated and compared to existing technologies. The experiment shows that it is possible to automatically load balance a small district heating network using agent technology. This thesis also comprises an initial study where the strengths and weaknesses of agent-based approaches and mathematical optimization techniques are analyzed and compared. Finally, a generalized formal characterization of the problem space under investigation is provided, i.e., production and logistics network management, together with a preliminary evaluation of the applicability of the suggested multi-agent system approach for this general problem area.

Prestationsmätningssystem – och strategisk implementering i en professionell tjänsteorganisation2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Title: Experiences of Banner advertisement on a specialized homepage Author: Marcus Westerberg Supervisor: Marie Hemming Department: Department of Business Administration, IEM Course: Bachelor thesis in Business Administration, FEC 007 Purpose: Create a understanding for how the users on Internet pages experience the occurrence and the shape of the banners. Method: Methods used are quantitative and qualitative, and the facts and figures are based on a pop up inquiry and some telephoneinterviews. I elected pop up inquiry and telephoneinterview as my data collection. My inquiry had a high grade of standardization and the interviews had a low grade of standardization. Result: On the basis of the question of issue I have drawn the conclusion that the users feels that it is important with information in all advertising. It is also important for the users to create a value around the product. The users do not have the time to figure out the message behind advertising, the want simple and massive information about the product/service. It´s important for the users that the banneradvertising are about things that they are interested in. Only then the users will be drawn to the banneradvertising on different homepages.

How Diversity Influences the Work Process2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT Title: How Diversity Influences the Work Process in Cooperation Projects Author: Sofia M Westerberg Supervisors: Marie Aurell, Marie Hemming Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s thesis in Business Administration, 10 credits Background: Cooperation beyond organizational boundaries becomes more necessary because of the changing nature of the business environment. The project as a form of organization is very well suited to carry out difficult tasks, not only within organizations but also between them. This means that the traditional view of looking at projects needs rethinking; there is a growing spectrum of projects with wider objectives and a broader scope, which leads to a higher degree of complexity and uncertainty. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to get a better understanding of how diversity influences the work process in a cooperation project. Because the cooperation project is becoming a more common phenomenon, it is interesting to learn more about how diversity has an impact on its work processes and characteristics. Hopefully this study can be one input to managers in making decisions about if a task shall be carried out in a cooperation project group or not, and if that should be the case, what implications this can have on the project and its outcomes. The research question is: How can diversity influence the work process in a cooperation project? Method: The thesis focuses on the development of the work process in a cooperation project, where the participants come from different organizations, and where there is a high degree of diversity. This is done through a literature review, observations and interviews. Theory: The theories are about cooperation projects, negotiation in small groups, uncertainty and complexity in projects and factors of diversity that influence the process; interests, conflicting interest, objectives, motivational orientation and trust. The FIRO-theory of group development (Fundamental Interpersonal Relationship Motivational orientation, Schutz 1989) is also used. Analysis: First a literature study was carried out and then methodologies were chosen. The analysis was made from observations and interviews and carried out on three levels; the individual level, the group level and the organizational level. First I looked at each individual’s own role and behaviour in the group, secondly and thirdly, the organizations´ own interests, objectives as well as the group’s interests, etc, were considered. The factors of diversity (interests, objectives, orientation and trust) were systemized and analyzed in relation to the three levels of analysis and then discussed in connection to the literature. The findings were combined with the work process and development phases of groups to see how this is influenced by the diversity. Conclusion: The diversity which exists in a cooperation project influences the work process in a number of ways. The findings in this study point to a number of issues. The diversity makes the group development phases more complex than in a traditional project. The two first phases of group development in the work process will probably take longer time. The work process is also more sensitive and steps back in development phases are more common than in a traditional project. Either development of trust takes longer time or only so called “swift trust” will develop. There are more environmental factors that influence the project. Because of the diversity, the formal positions of the representatives in the group become more important. Possible ways of handling the diversity are a general group assignment instead of a concrete objective and a delegated responsibility from the management to the project group. Two new forms of motivational orientation of group members were observed during this study. One form I have called “Changing motivational orientation”. The other form of motivational orientation I have named “More than cooperative”. In “Changing motivational orientation”, some of the members in the group turned from one motivational orientation to another one during the scope of the project. In being “More than cooperative” the members see the group’s assignment as the most important task. The study also shows that the so called “claiming-creation dilemma” (Schei and Rognes, 2005) is not always applicable. Not all the participants saw the balancing between the interests and objectives of their own organization on the one hand and the assignment of the project group on the other. Some of them looked only at their organizations interests and some of them focused totally on the group assignment. The study also shows that the FIRO-model for group development is relevant also for cooperation projects, but with some adjustments, because the development phases takes longer time due to the issue of diversity.

Leadership and Innovation: The relationship between leadership in a company and the company’s ability to be innovative2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this explanatory thesis is to study how leadership relates to innovation performance. The research findings aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of this relationship, and what actions management can take, in order to increase innovation performance. The thesis creates a model for the leadership stimulus influencing innovation performance. A survey was designed, based on the model, to assess the attitudes towards the studied parameters followed by the conclusive data processing, empirical findings, analysis, and conclusions. The stimulus used in the study was Visionary Leadership, Learning Organisation, Incentives and Resources spent on innovation. The originality and value that this paper adds, is to analyse the joint effects of different leadership dimensions with regards to innovation performance in one single study, and also make a compound correlation of these dimensions. The study validated the positive relationship between the compound leadership dimensions and innovation performance. Furthermore, the study shows that the strongest direct correlation was between visionary leadership and innovation performance as well as between learning organization and innovation performance. However, the research could not establish any clear relation either between incentives and innovation performance, nor resources spent on innovation, and innovation performance.

How can innovation variables be integrated in stock valuation methods to improve accuracy?: A research study of Swedish manufacturing companies in industrial segment at Stockholm stock exchange market2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Intangible assets and innovation have been a topic with increased importance during the last decades. Despite of this, common stock valuation methods only use financial data and ignore the intangible assets in valuation process. This thesis examines how intangibles can improve valuation accuracy by using a two stage-process where we start with share price valuation of five different companies through Free-Cash-Flow (FCF) model and an alternative Dividend Discount Model (DDM) with financial data input from the last ten years, followed by sensitivity analysis. In second stage we add innovation parameters in valuation process to see if the FCF-model can be improved or adjusted. These innovation parameters are: (1) R&D spending, (2) Patent applications, and (3) New product releases. Both FCF- and DDM-models are very sensitive to the input variable assumptions made regarding future growth rates and weighted average cost of capital for instance. Even the smallest change in these variables in a sensitivity analysis can easily double or half the output; share price. There is also very difficult to handle stochastic macro-economy disturbances like the financial crisis in recent years (2007-2010). These models could therefore only be used as a rough estimation of stock price levels and the fine tuning with innovation variables becomes irrelevant. Four out of five companies studied fall short compared to actual share price level, however, the two that comes closest to our valuation are also those with highest R&D spending in absolute values. It also seems that the company with highest deviation from our valuation has recently made a strategic redirection of R&D spending. Both these findings indicate that further research of R&D spending in relation to company value might be an interesting topic to explore. Patent applications and new product releases are difficult to interpret because possible contribution to future company profit can vary tremendously between each new patent and product. Nevertheless, there is a clear sign of change in patent application behavior by some of the companies. Reason for this is not explored and could be studied further. Analysis of new product releases could not be performed since reliable and structured data was not found.

Developments in Business Intelligence Software2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Business Intelligence (BI) is a broad category of applications and technologies for gathering, providing access to, and analyzing data for the purpose of helping enterprise users make better business decisions. The term implies having a comprehensive knowledge of all of the factors that affect your business. It is imperative that you have an in depth knowledge about factors such as your customers, competitors, business partners, economic environment, and internal operations to make effective and good quality business decisions. Business intelligence enables you to make these kinds of decisions. BI technology allows organizations to track, understand, and manage vital business information. BI is assuming an increasingly strategic role as more organizations look for ways to tap into the valuable data stored in their operational systems. In today’s economy the requirements for Business Intelligence environments are changing, and quite dramatically. Consequent to this paradigm, this research paper tested these hypothetical constructs. Hypothesis one sought to test if vendors seek to provide complete BI solutions following all four stages of the CI cycle. In terms of the support of CI cycle phases; BI vendors were grouped according to the overall performance of four (4) phases (planning & directing, data collection, analysis and dissemination). The evaluation of BI vendors indicates that all vendors examined do not support planning & directing phase, except for Astragy that gives users a consultations to plan and arrange their CI, its absence did not influence the overall performance score. Information Builders and SAP Business Objects excel in data collection phase; SAS Institute and QlikView are the best in analysis; SAP Business Objects and IBM Cognos surpass in dissemination phase. It should be noted that Astragy was evaluated along with other vendors though it does not provide any BI functions but only provide common functions for supporting the CI cycle phases. The second hypothesis sought to test if BI vendors fail to provide good enough solutions for the analysis part of the intelligence cycle. The research findings indicate that only two BI vendors, SAS and QlikView, delivering the analysis phase of the intelligence cycle in a proper way. The overall findings also indicate that BI vendors fail to provide good enough solutions for the analysis part of the intelligence cycle as total average score provided by the evaluation instrument (see Figure 17) among BI vendors for the analysis phase fell below the average scores for the data collection and dissemination phases of the cycle. The third hypothetical construct concerns BI vendors’ attempts at making considerable changes in software each year, with each new upgrade. By tracing and comparing the developments of the vendors selected it has been concluded that all BI vendors, irrespective of whether it is a leading traditional vendor or small innovative BI, follow the same tendency in introducing BI enhancements by striving to make its software cost-effective, simpler, faster and flexible for use, scalable to manage increasing amounts of data in businesses, accessible to employees at all levels of organization. Most of the vendors introduced a support for heterogeneous environments and data sources from a variety of vendors. Hypothesis four sought to find out if the BI vendors’ software tested can be divided into a number of meaningful subgroups. With reference to evaluation and analysis and empirical findings, it has been concluded that the BI vendors can be divided into sub groups and hence has been classified based on their support of the phases of the intelligence cycle, their developments and market information. The subgroups range from advanced, competent, partially competent, and inadequate to absolutely inadequate. Among the BI vendors assessed, none satisfied the criteria in the advanced category. Hypothesis five aspired to determine if the BI software evaluated should fall under a different term as some of them do not follow the entire BI cycle. The analysis of empirical findings identified that QlikView and TIBCO Spotfire deliver the so-called next generation in-memory analytics, which is faster, much simpler, more flexible and scalable and meet the present-day business needs to a far greater extent if compared to traditional BI. Besides, they do not follow the entire BI cycle and it is suggested herein to term them as Business Analytics Software instead of BI software. Moreover, as Astragy does not support any BI functions, it is also suggested to term it differently as CI software, not BI software. BI software is among the many software that organizations utilize to ensure their stay in the market. BI enables organizations to make well informed business decisions and thus can be the source of competitive advantages and perform the ultimate objective improving the timeliness and quality of decisions. Developments in BI software eventually play the role of improving the overall performance of the organization using them by enabling the company to respond quickly and adapt to changes. It is within this framework that this research has been directed and is alluded to by the hypotheses above. Fundamentally, the evaluation of BI software development has gleaned data which shows that BI software vendors have made significant improvements with their product offerings. Developments in information delivery, user-interface, reporting, analytics, and data integration are evident with BI vendors examined for the purpose of this research. BI vendors have also seen developments in their possession of market share among these software providers. It has been observed that SAP Business Objects has the leading market share as opposed to other competitors. Majority of these BI vendors also provide multiple licence options in the market. Generally BI vendors do make significant developments with BI software over time and this they have all recognized is necessary to ensure competitive advantage. With regards to the intelligence cycle, one can allude that few are lacking much in data collection and dissemination, very few are supporting analysis duly, but all BI vendors used for the purpose of this research fell short on the planning and direction phase. Based on the findings it is being suggested, further investigation of all BI software vendors is recommended with an in-depth analysis of CI cycle phases based on the enhanced evaluation criteria as well as newly approached analysis and evaluation of recent BI developments, present market shares and pricing structures is suggested for further studies. A further analysis of BI market share for 2008 should be carried out to reflect the present-day situation. The research will provide further details concerning the developments that have been made in BI software among a select group of vendors, the extent to which the software provided by these vendors cover the areas which comprise the business intelligence cycle. It will also further highlight the new developments that have taken place with the software compared to previous release by vendors, the market share of the software and the market that exists for these providers.

Hur medarbetare upplever ett förändringsarbete2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Which Types of Relatedness Matter in Regional Growth?: Industry, Occupation and Education2017Inngår i: Regional studies, ISSN 0034-3404, E-ISSN 1360-0591, Vol. 51, nr 4, s. 523-536Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper provides a conceptual discussion of relatedness, which suggests a focus on individuals as a complement to firms and industries. The empirical relevance of the main arguments is tested by estimating the effects of related and unrelated variety in education and occupation among employees, as well as in industries, on regional growth. The results show that occupational and educational related variety are positively correlated with productivity growth, which supports the conceptual discussion put forth in the paper. In addition, related variety in industries is found to be negative for productivity growth, but positive for employment growth. © 2016 Regional Studies Association

How to Manage Innovations: A Case Survey2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose My primary purpose with this paper is to penetrate the question; how to manage the internal factors in an innovation project. I also have a secondary purpose that is to see if the case survey methodology is a sufficient method in order to penetrate the primary purpose. Method I have chosen to use the case survey methodology in this paper. The case survey method is a way of combining qualitative secondary data with quantitative research method. I created questions that were put into a coding scheme/questionnaire the questions were developed with help theories about organization, strategy and innovation management. The questions in the coding scheme are based on theories about leadership, structure, culture, resistance and learning. The quantitative data that is gathered thorough the coding scheme is analyzed and general conclusions can be drawn from qualitative data. Results If to innovate there are a number of factors that should be considered, if to innovate a radical or an incremental innovation, if it is a product or a process does not matter. Radical and incremental differ in the size of the firm, flexible and decentralized structure of the project. Resistance arises against the radical innovation projects. This resistance come from the outside of the project and can be catalyzed by existing products that could be terminated by the new innovation. Previous failures can arise a resistance towards new innovation projects but what should be done is to use the failures and to learn from them. It turned out that the case survey methodology was not that efficient to penetrate the primary purpose. Although I knew of the flaws of the methodology it was harder to avoid them than I thought. The lesson of this is, study your own and others failures and make the knowledge about them into an asset in future projects.

Industrial Diversification in Europe: The Differentiated Role of Relatedness2018Inngår i: Economic Geography, ISSN 0013-0095, E-ISSN 1944-8287, Vol. 94, nr 5, s. 514-549Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

There is increasing interest in the drivers of industrial diversification, and how these depend on economic and industry structures. This article contributes to this line of inquiry by analyzing the role of industry relatedness in explaining variations in industry diversification, measured as the entry of new industry specializations, across 173 European regions during the period 2004-2012. First, we show that there are significant differences across regions in Europe in terms of industrial diversification. Second, we provide robust evidence showing that the probability that a new industry specialization develops in a region is positively associated with the new industry's relatedness to the region's current industries. Third, a novel finding is that the influence of relatedness on the probability of new industrial specializations depends on innovation capacity of a region. We find that relatedness is a more important driver of diversification in regions with a weaker innovation capacity. The effect of relatedness appears to decrease monotonically as the innovation capacity of a regional economy increases. This is consistent with the argument that high innovation capacity allows an economy to break from its past and to develop, for the economy, truly new industry specializations. We infer from this that innovation capacity is a critical factor for economic resilience and diversification capacity.

Resilience in the European Union: the effect of the 2008 crisis on the ability of regions in Europe to develop new industrial specializations2018Inngår i: Industrial and Corporate Change, ISSN 0960-6491, E-ISSN 1464-3650, Vol. 27, nr 1, s. 15-47Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article adopts an evolutionary framework to the study of industrial resilience. We present a study on European regions and assess the extent to which the capacity of their economies to develop new industrial specializations is affected by the global economic crisis of 2008. We compare levels of industry entry in European regions in the period 2004-2008 and 2008-2012, i.e. before and after a major economic disturbance. Resilient regions are defined as regions that show high entry levels or even increase their entry levels after the shock. Related and unrelated variety exhibit a positive effect on regional resilience, especially on the entry of knowledge-intensive industries after the shock.

USING THE BALANCED SCORECARD TO ACCESS PERFORMANCE OF BANKS IN GHANA2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT Title: Using Balanced Scorecard to assess performance of banks in Ghana Author: Abu Yahaya Supervisor: Eva Lovstal Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s thesis in Business Administration, 15 credits (ECTS). Background and Problem Discussion: The effect of non-financial variables on the financial performance of banks in Ghana can become significant. The information of how customer satisfaction, internal business processes, organizational learning and growth influences financial indicators is therefore of great importance in assessing performance of banks in Ghana. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to create a model to be able to assess performance of banks in several dimensions and measures using the Balanced Scorecard framework. Method: Quantitative and inductive methods. Primary data is financial and non-financial statistics collected from public institutions and sources, staffs and customers of Barclays Bank Ghana limited, Ecobank Ghana Limited and United Bank for Africa (Ghana) Limited. Theory: The theory section looks at different concepts and relevant theories that come up when analyzing bank’s financial results and how they are being impacted by other non-financial perspectives. I have therefore chosen the most common concept for the theory section. Analysis: I have used a model to examine how the balanced scorecard can be used to assess performance of banks in several dimensions and measures in order to provide additional information to all stakeholders - internally and externally. The chosen scenario shall then be used to determine if BSC can provide additional information with respect to the performance of the selected banks. Conclusion: The analyzed banks showed only marginally the impact of non-financial perspectives on financial performance. Analysis also showed that in assessing performance of banks some critical non-financial factors such as customer satisfaction, efficient internal processes and the quality of staff play a crucial role. Of specific interest is the turn-around-time on loan processing and disbursement which is a core function of the banks and for which all the selected banks failed to adequately address. But the study also revealed that the BSC framework indeed provides additional information when used to assess the performance of banks in Ghana.

HEALTH DELIVERY SERVICE IN GHANA: CONSUMER PROTECTION AND SATISFACTION - Performance Assessment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital - Kumasi2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT Almost every patient in Ghana has a story to tell about the health care delivery system, some pleasant and others bitter. This calls for a system of continuous quality improvement for the improvement of the health and functioning of the people . The research sort answers to the following questions: What level of quality care are patients receiving now that health care is very accessible? Are Ghanaian consumers satisfied with the services of the health sector? What is the level of awareness of Ghanaian patients of the Patients Charter promulgated to protect them? Are there any correlation between the level of patients’ satisfaction and their level of awareness of consumer/patients protection laws? The research revealed that: o doctors and nurses at the Hospital generally treat Patients with Respect and Courtesy o both doctors and nurses at the hospital do not take time to explain to patients the side-effects of medicines prescribed. o responsiveness of Hospital Staff to Patients call for help is not encouraging o Hospital staff do not provide adequate information to Patients when they are being discharged o the hospital staff keep their environment clean. o most patients of the hospital do not know that patients have rights protected by law. o the general perception of patients about the hospital was above average performance. On the satisfaction index scale they scored MnCSI – 77. However, it was also revealed that the satisfaction level of patients has correlation with their level of knowledge of patients rights It was found out that if all patients will know and insist on their rights, quality will improve at our hospitals.

Organizational Ambidexterity: Balancing Exploitation and Exploration in Organizations2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate necessity of ambidexterity for organizations. The main interest of this thesis is to investigate why organizations should be ambidextrous and how organizations can reach ambidexterity under the pressure of limited resources and competitive market condition. Findings: This thesis explored relations and tensions between exploitation and exploration in organizational and individual aspects. Findings in the research show that communication skill of the subunits in the case company need to be strengthened. Subunits need to be independent from each other. However, they should be aware of other subunits’ actions. In this sense, there is need for strong information flow between all units in the case company. Participation of employees and teamwork should be promoted by leaders. This thesis suggests that establishing special subunits for explorative activities would not only leverage explorative processes in the organizations but it would also leverage exploitative activities. This issue causes time management and scheduling problem for the employees and also individuals are distracted by focusing on conflicting dimensions such as explorative and exploitative tasks. Behavioral integrity is one of the most important subjects. Behavioral integrity is the key factor to provide consistency between subunits. Independent subunits with common vision lead firms to ambidexterity. Implications: The implications of this study contribute to achievement of organizational ambidexterity in companies. This thesis was started with introduction to importance of ambidexterity, organizational ambidexterity, exploration and exploitation in case of long and short term organizational performance in sight of knowledge based and managerial perspective. It also explored relations and tensions between these dimensions such as exploration and exploitation in terms of organizational and individual aspects, contextual and structural ambidexterity, social support and performance management, dynamic and ambidextrous capabilities with implication of case study research.

    Abstract [sv]

We would like to gain a more in depth knowledge of whether the modern orientations both within corporate governance and control philosophy lay the foundation for enterprises’ more sustainable success. These both modern orientations are increasingly focusing on the importance of enterprises’ setting of goals and visions on the basis of stake holders’ interests and the employees’ more active engagement in and motivation for the goal achievement. Despite these common inherent characteristics, it is not evident from current scientific debate how such integration actually emerges in the control philosophies of the enterprises. However, the above mentioned common inherent characteristics, focused on the stakeholders’ interests and employee’s active engagement, could support our view on the broader perspective of steering and organizing of enterprises. The purpose of our thesis is to analyze whether the modern orientations both within corporate governance and performance management could establish a joint view on steering and organizing of enterprises, where the setting of targets and visions are based on the stake holders’ interests and where the enterprises are more oriented to interact with their surroundings. These strategies need to be thoroughly embedded with the employees throughout the whole organization. As a consequence we are especially interested whether our illustration of a more holistic perspective of steering and organizing of enterprises with emphasis on increasing consideration both on the stakeholders’ interests and on the employees’ more active engagement and motivation, could bring more positive outcomes for enterprises’ goal fulfillment and adaptability. Furthermore, we have found a number of indications suggesting that such a holistic perspective of steering and organizing of enterprises could lay the foundation for sustainable success of the enterprises. However, the concept of success can be defined through several different measurements. Success depends highly on the individual circumstances in each organization, whereby every enterprise needs to define its own criteria. Accordingly, we think a sustainable success requires that the enterprises’ targets and visions ate defined in line with the stake holders’ interests. The next step would be to transform these goals into concrete operational activities that are closely integrated in the daily work. It is therefore critical that the enterprises’ strategies are thoroughly embedded with the employees in order to be able to adapt the business to new challenges that the organization might face from time to time. By means of a qualitative literature study both within corporate governance and control philosophies, combined with an empirical study focused on a few enterprises’ control philosophy, we have found support for our assumption of the potential for a more holistic perspective of steering and organizing of enterprises. Such a holistic perspective for control philosophy is well in line with the development of the modern corporate governance theories and modern theories on control philosophies emphasizing the stakeholders' interests and the employees’ active commitment towards goal achievement. Key words: corporate governance, internal and external control mechanisms, control philosophy, stakeholders, balanced scorecard, organizational culture, success.

Kriskommunikation i en idrottsförening: En fallstudie om Helsingborgs Idrottsförening i kris2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

This thesis aims at tackling an important issue in the communication management of multi-organizational international projects. Furthermore, it focuses on the importance of effective communication in the planning stage of this kind of projects. The literature review shows the importance of effective communication among the different stakeholders at this stage of the project planning in the life cycle of such projects in particular. The empirical data received through interviews of three projects of this kind supports the literature about the importance of effective communication at this stage of the project since the lack of effective communication at this planning stage increases the chances of the failure of the whole project.

The Trend of Emission Reduction is Inevitable:Is It an Opportunity or Challenge for Chinese Private Automotive Enterprises?2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

With the development of economy, human concern more and more about environment protection and sustainability, especially the automotive industry, all the enterprises have been aware of that they will have no future if they cannot improve the technology of emission reduction or solve it by developing alternative energy. China has attracted lots of attention due to the rapid economy development. However, automotive industry in China, in particular, Chinese private enterprises only has short history. At present, China has been the first vehicles production country, but just for manufacture. Chinese private auto enterprises are also playing an important role in this process. What will they do after being a "Manufacture King"? In this thesis, we take BYD as a case study, use PEST, Five-forces, SWOT to analyse the factors those can affect the development of Chinese private automotive industry, besides, we also give some possible suggestions for them according to the analysis.

Aktionsforskning som metod för att uppnå delaktighet och godkännande vid omorganisationer – en fallstudie i Nynäshamns kommun2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Effectiveness of an ERP Vendor's Customer Support E-System2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

In today’s business climate many organizations are implementing ERP systems to connect all their processes into one system thereby hoping to benefit off the resulting efficiencies. ERP Vendors are trying to best cater to the needs of their customers, and this extends into the post-implementation period where customers rely on the Vendor to resolve software and technical errors that inevitably occur. This study looks into a factor with-in this area from the ERP Vendor perspective. Customers have to communicate with their ERP Vendor in the post-implementation period to resolve problems, and this study focuses on how this could best happen. This study uses a single case study approach that is centered on an ERP Vendor’s Customer support team. Yes Logo2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Abstract Title: Yes logo! What defines a good logo? Authors: Fredrik Dahlin and Vladimir Zunkovic Supervisor: Klaus Solberg Söilen. Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology. Course: Bachelor’s thesis in Business Administration, 10 credits. Purpose: To find out which are the defining characteristics of a good logo, from a scientific point of view. Method: We have used a qualitative method consisting of interviews with experts within the marketing area with the goal to test the Swedish point of view against the one in the litterature. We also used a quantitative method to investigate the publics attitude towards the testlogos we created. The purpouse of this poll is to test different colourcombinations and how the marketsegments feel about them. In this poll we used statistical methods to make sure that the agelimits and the number of male and female respondents are correct. We executed another quantitative study towards Swedish marketing companies to create an idea of the businesses thoughts about a good logo are. Results: A good logo is a simple symbol or geometrical form consisting of a combination of colours that reflect the company’s core values, visions and goals. It should be focused on the primary market segment and so unique that it can be trademarked. Geometrically a good logo should be wider than it is high and not easily associated to symbols that might offend people of any culture. In the aspect of colour it is important that a logo attracts the viewer and truly submit the messages intended. Our study showes examples on which combinations that may function with a specific target group.

Investments and Corporate Strategy: Aligning investment decisions with overall strategy2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background and Problem Discussion: Correct usage of a firm’s resources are crucial for the firm’s survival. Companies usually have formalized procedures for calculations of the profitability of investment projects. On the other hand is the corporate strategy, directing the company activities, determining how company resources should be used. The financial calculations and the corporate strategy should work together to ensure the best possible allocation of company resources. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate if contradictions between strategy and individual investment decisions exists in companies today, if these are acknowledged, and what is done about it. Method: Phenomenological research, using three exemplars. The first exemplar is based on primary data (a case study) and the others on secondary data (taken from published work). Theory: My starting point is the importance of aligning the investment process with the strategy process. The analysis is supported by theoretical notions of the strategy and the investment processes. These are usually treated as independent processes, although the importance of aligning is extensively acknowledged. Analysis: The analysis proceeded in the following manner: The empirical data was condensed into key descriptions, which relied on identification on Northcott’s (1995) model of the standard investment process. The key descriptions from each case were compared to find similarities and differences. These were put into perspectives offered by literature. Conclusion: The study showed that the importance of aligning individual investment decisions with strategy is primarily acknowledged by the companies studied through requiring strategy motivations in the investment proposals. More important for the actual decision-making, however, seems to be the “structural context” in which the investment are proposed, built up through formal and informal communications within the corporation. This “structural context” affects the decisions through the gut feeling (tacit knowledge) of the decision-makers.

The Aftermarket Performance of Swedish Initial Public Offerings: A study about short- and long-term performance and underpricing of Initial Public Offerings on the Swedish stock markets2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the performance of IPO firms in the Swedish markets during their first three years of trading to investigate what effects different factors have on the short- and long-term performance. The level of underpricing on Swedish IPOs are also investigated to detect any abnormalities from previous studies on larger markets in the US and Europe. A total of 175 IPO firms included in the sample in the period between 2000 and 2015. The method used to calculate the aftermarket performance is the buy-and-hold abnormal returns method in an event-time portfolio approach. These returns are used as a dependent variable in a multivariable linear regression analysis. The main findings from this study are that IPO firms in the Swedish markets underperform the OMX market index one month and three years after the offering. Conversely, IPO firms in the Swedish markets overperform after 18 months compared to the OMX market index. The results show that Swedish IPOs are on average underpriced and that underpricing has a significant effect on short-term performance. Firm age, offer size and the technology industry also have a significant effect on the first month’s performance of IPO firms; however, there is little support for these factors to affect the longterm performance.

Market orientation in small to medium sized Biotech companies in Sweden2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate if small to medium sized biotechnology companies in Sweden are market oriented, or if they are research and technology orientated. Market oriented meaning being customer focused, having a strong competitor orientation and building customer solutions using a team approach; and the higher the marketing knowledge – the stronger the market orientation. The results are based on in-depth interviews with members of management groups in 10 companies. The findings indicate that biotechnology companies in Sweden are science and technology focused, since it is in their foundation to be so, but that they still can be market oriented. The marketing knowledge seemed to be rather high amongst the interviewed persons and managements spread information regarding the company’s situation, the customers and competition to all employees. Managers and employees met with customers, as well as did personnel from other departments. The regulations, followed by the majority of these companies, structure collection of customer information and its the diffusion into the development process, including using a team approach. Most of the companies are competitor oriented as well. The fundamental market resources were sometimes missing. The companies are research focused until an active decision is taken to change and become marketing focused, and until resources are rebalanced.

Leadership education in Sweden 2010 and its connection to current values: an institutional approach2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study is a comparative study with the purpose of connecting the Swedish leadership education with the current social values. By utilizing a historical as well as a broad theoretical perspective we wish to create a clear understanding of the current market. The study made use of both the quantitative and the qualitative research methodologies through the use of interview. Ten of the most prominent leadership educators in the Swedish business sector were interviewed to gain credible insight as they account for over half of the Swedish leadership education market. Educators were asked questions about the content of their leadership courses, their assessment of social values in the Swedish workplace, connections between the concepts in their leadership courses and Swedish social values, and how these factors influenced their leadership education. The Swedish social values influencing leadership education within the researched companies were stability, justice and equality, participation, and individuality, in congruence with the secondary data collected from extensive research. The awareness of situational-based leadership was very high and the concept was used frequently. In relation to other discussed concepts such as value based leadership and transformational leadership, situational-based leadership is the dominating concept among leadership topics. The stated current values are also very well suited with situational-based leadership. It was noted however, that situational-based leadership and its supporting models and theories aim to create self-motivated people towards self-actualization at work; and such values were seldom expressed in the secondary data describing social values. The most empowering force behind this situation was the requirements directly made by the customer and requirements carrying values of society. The results were also analyzed within an institutional theory context based on the obvious homogeneity in the results. We concluded that there was a strong sense of isomorphism and with such strong patterns in behavior we can accurately state that the field of leadership education is an institutional field. Furthermore, the study depicted a gap within Swedish leadership education, between a pervasive focus on institutional maintenance, and a growing need for flexibility and innovation in the modern international marketplace. Business leaders are struggling to balance self-actualization in the business workplace with their own and subordinate Swedish social values. After three decades the Swedish interpretation of situational-based model is still the most prominent and dominant idea.
