    Alignment of Software Product Quality Goals in Two Outsourcing Relationships2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background: Issues with software product quality are commonly reported when organisations engage in outsourcing relationships. To address this issue, value-based software engineering literature emphasises the need for all success-critical stakeholder groups to work towards a mutually agreed goal. Aim: This paper presents a case study that aims to compare and contrast the priority two groups place on software product quality — stakeholders internal to the development organisation, and stakeholders from outsourcing relationships. Method: A model of software product quality was developed and used for this study based on ISO 9126 standard. Questionnaires were collected from 38 representatives of the two key stakeholder groups, in which each person rates the relative importance of aspects of software product quality using the hierarchical cumulative voting (HCV) technique. The results of these two groups were then analysed and compared. Results: The results show the stakeholders priorities to be a merging of the priorities from both the software development organsiation, and the firm providing the outsourced services. Further, stakeholders from outsourced relationships had greater difficulty define an ideal future balance of software product qualities. Conclusions: One of the keys to success when outsourcing is to ensure both the internal and external groups understand the needs of each other — and ensure they can work towards a sufficiently compatible goal. It may be necessary to change the way work is outsourced to align the goals of both firms to be compatible.

    Software Product Quality: Ensuring a Common Goal2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Software qualities are in many cases tacit and hard to measure. Thus, there is a potential risk that they get lower priority than deadlines, cost and functionality. Yet software qualities impact customers, profits and even developer efficiency. This paper presents a method to evaluate the priority of software qualities in an industrial context. The method is applied in an exploratory case study, where the ISO 9126 model for software quality is combined with Theory-W to create a process for evaluating the alignment between success- critical stakeholder groups in the area of software product quality. The results of the case study using this tool is then presented and discussed. It is shown that the method provides valuable information about software qualities.

    Abstract [en]

    The long-term sustainability of a software product depends on more than developing features. Priorities are placed on aspects that support the development of software, like software product quality (eg. ISO 9126), project constraints -- time and cost, and even the development of intellectual capital (IC). A greater focus on any one aspect takes priority from another, but as each aspects delivers a different type of value managers have trouble comparing and balancing these aspects. This paper presents a method to help determine the balance between key priorities in the software development process. The method is applied to a new case study, that also combines with results from previous studies. The results show it is possible to compare features, quality, time, cost and IC in a comprehensive way, with the case study showing that participants perceive a change from a shorter-term product perspective to a longer-term organisation beneficial to the business.

    Offshore insourcing: A case study on software quality alignment2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background: Software quality issues are commonly reported when off shoring software development. Value-based software engineering addresses this by ensuring key stakeholders have a common understanding of quality. Aim: This work seeks to understand the levels of alignment between key stakeholders on aspects of software quality for two products developed as part of an offshore in sourcing arrangement. The study further aims to explain the levels of alignment identified. Method: Representatives of key stakeholder groups for both products ranked aspects of software quality. The results were discussed with the groups to gain a deeper understanding. Results: Low levels of alignment were found between the groups studied. This is associated with insufficiently defined quality requirements, a culture that does not question management and conflicting temporal reflections on the product's quality. Conclusion: The work emphasizes the need for greater support to align success-critical stakeholder groups in their understanding of quality when off shoring software development

    Abstract [en]

    Human society as a whole has a reached a tipping point in its relationship with the socio-ecological systems upon which it depends. All sectors of society need to be involved in addressing this crucial challenge through a raised awareness of the issues and pro-active solutions to it. This research focuses on small urban towns and cities, where half the world’s urban population lives, and looks at the ways in which local government in these key areas can play an active role in leading sustainability through education and training. Municipalities and communities that use the framework for strategic sustainable development (FSSD) were investigated, and the conditions were identified that helped and hindered training to be really effective. Effective training, in its many forms, was found to be essential in fomenting a common language of sustainability, engaging the community, and bringing concerted strategic actions that together could foster a culture of sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

    Shelter poses global sustainability challenges, as the population increase accelerates and resources dwindle. It is crucial for initiatives addressing the growing housing demand to incorporate a sustainability perspective. Open source, a form of Internet information-sharing, is being utilised by various housing initiatives worldwide. However, a sustainability perspective is not always included in a robust and holistic way, despite the negative impacts for human needs and ecosystems resulting from many aspects of current housing practices. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development includes basic conditions for a sustainable society and a planning and decision-making methodology to move systematically towards sustainability. It provides a robust method for organizing, evaluating and using tools to aid in handling sustainability challenges effectively. This thesis aims to contribute to the development of affordable, sustainable design solutions, by modelling the incorporation of the FSSD into open source housing initiatives. A case study of a housing project under development in Ghana is used. Despite the complexity of the system under study, the research concludes that bringing a strategic sustainable development perspective to open source approaches can act as leverage for housing to move towards sustainability. Within this context, guidance is provided for approaching open source housing to contribute to SSD.

    Abstract

    ROOTS – What Could Emerge Out of Thinking and Acting Networked ROOTS as Design?

     

    This bachelor’s thesis uses ROOTS as a method designed to engage in both thinking and acting inside networks, by creating a hydroponic gardening network. As a designer one engages in many different fields of design. The most complicated design is designing networks with function, interlaced and embedded in everyday life. This is known as accountability, to be accountable to ones decisions and to act on many perspectives when designing. Accountability is designing from somewhere, and being aware of where that somewhere stems from. ROOTS visualizes accountability in a network, as accountability entails thinking and acting inside a network, and by doing so one actively engages in thinking about futures and design as a whole. When asking oneself what could emerge out of thinking and acting networked ROOTS as design, one begins to speculate in matters of vast networked complexity. From observation using methods such as ANT, the technologic extension T-ANT and also conducting a study in messiness, information is created and from the information, valuing becomes present, from valuing knowledge grows, from knowledge comes accountability and the network creates another cycle of ROOTS.

    Abstract [en]

    Background:

    Additive manufacturing has recently gained cogency as a final part manufacturing technique. The method uses a layer-upon-layer technique to build three-dimensional objects. This technique has many advantages creating new opportunities regarding production.

    Purpose:

    The purpose of the study is to investigate cost elements, cost drivers, their weight distribution, and to explore production uncertainties of the additive manufacturing process. The production uncertainty parameters of the explored uncertainties are then evaluated to investigate how some of them impacts the production cost of the case component.

    Method:

    The following study have used qualitative data collection methods in terms of interviews together with a pre-study and a sensitivity analysis tool to identify cost impacts of uncertainty parameters. Five primary interviews were performed with employees at the company with relevant knowledge of the studied field.

    Results:

    The result shows that the product cost can be divided into two categories of material cost and manufacturing costs, these two categories then have different cost elements that drives cost. The explored uncertainties of the process consist of both aleatory and epistemic uncertainty. The explored production uncertainty parameter that affects the final product cost the most is the time needed to finish the AM build.

    Conclusions:

    Considering production uncertainty is important in order to have reliable and accurate cost estimations. The three explored production uncertainties that have the most significant impact on the final product cost is the yearly machine running time, the SLM machine time needed to finish the component, and reduced manning time in the operations. These three uncertainty parameters should, therefore, have a larger focus than variables that do not have the same impact on the final product cost, to create better cost estimations.

    Abstract [en]

    This article proposes several improvements to an adaptive fingerprint enhancement method that is based on contextual filtering. The term adaptive implies that parameters of the method are automatically adjusted based on the input fingerprint image. Five processing blocks comprise the adaptive fingerprint enhancement method, where four of these blocks are updated in our proposed system. Hence, the proposed overall system is novel. The four updated processing blocks are: 1) preprocessing; 2) global analysis; 3) local analysis; and 4) matched filtering. In the preprocessing and local analysis blocks, a nonlinear dynamic range adjustment method is used. In the global analysis and matched filtering blocks, different forms of order statistical filters are applied. These processing blocks yield an improved and new adaptive fingerprint image processing method. The performance of the updated processing blocks is presented in the evaluation part of this paper. The algorithm is evaluated toward the NIST developed NBIS software for fingerprint recognition on FVC databases.

    Minutiae Extraction from Fingerprint with Neural Network and Minutiae based Fingerprint Verification2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Human fingerprints are rich in details called minutiae, which can be used as identification marks for fingerprint verification. The goal of this thesis is to develop a complete system for fingerprint verification through extracting and matching minutiae. A neural network is trained using the back-propagation algorithm and will work as a classifier to locate various minutiae. To achieve good minutiae extraction in fingerprints with varying quality, preprocessing in form of binarization and skeletonization is first applied on fingerprints before they are evaluated by the neural network. Extracted minutiae are then considered as a 2D point pattern problem and an algorithm is used to determine the number of matching points between two point patterns. Performance of the developed system is evaluated on a database with fingerprints from different people and experimental results are presented.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a new approach for fingerprint enhancement by using directional filters and binarization. A straightforward method for automatically tuning the size of local area is obtained by analyzing entire fingerprint image in the frequency domain. Hence, the algorithm will adjust adaptively to the local area of the fingerprint image, independent on the characteristics of the fingerprint sensor or the physical appearance of the fingerprints. Frequency analysis is carried out in the local areas to design directional filters. Experimental results are presented.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper improvements to a previous work are presented. Removing the redundant artifacts in the fingerprint mask is introduced enhancing the final result. The proposed method is entirely adaptive process adjusting to each fingerprint without any further supervision of the user. Hence, the algorithm is insensitive to the characteristics of the fingerprint sensor and the various physical appearances of the fingerprints. Further, a detailed description of fingerprint mask generation not fully described in the previous work is presented. The improved experimental results are presented.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

    Studiens syfte var att undersöka om och hur skiljer sig personligheter av personer som är intagna i fängelse, rehabiliterade personer och personer som inte har begått något brott. Personlighetsundersökning baserades på femfaktorsmodell och en enkät som bestod av 50 frågor. Samtliga faktorer jämfördes genom alla tre grupper. Vidare gjordes en jämförelse av vilken typ av brott har de intagna och rehabiliterade personer begått, vilka drivkrafter hade dem och vad de tyckte var viktigt i deras liv för att inte begå brott vilken realiserades genom en konstant komparativ metod. Personlighetsskillnaderna undersöktes genom Kruskal-Wallis test. Urvalet bestod av 21 deltagare, varav 5 var intagna, 6 var rehabiliterade personer och 10 var icke-kriminella. Resultatet visade signifikanta skillnader i Neuroticism och Vänlighet, majoriteten av kriminella har begått narkotika brott och viktiga aspekter i deras liv var familj, arbete och lugn och ro.

    Abstract [en]

    Nowadays more and more IT companies switch to the distributed development model. This trend has a number of advantages and disadvantages, which are studied by researchers through different aspects of the modern code development. One of such aspects is code review, which is used by many companies and produces a big amount of data. A number of studies describe different data mining and data analysis approaches, which are based on a link between code review data and performance. According to these studies analysis of the code review data can give a good insight to the development performance and help software companies to detect a number of performance issues and improve the quality of their code.

    The main goal of this Thesis was to collect reported knowledge about the code review data analysis and implement a solution, which will help to perform such analysis in a real industrial setting.

    During the performance of the research the author used multiple research techniques, such as Snowballing literature review, Case study and Semi-structured interviews.

    The results of the research contain a list of code review data metrics, extracted from the literature and a software tool for collecting and visualizing data.

    The performed literature review showed that among the literature sources, related to the code review, relatively small amount of sources are related to the topic of the Thesis, which exposes a field for a future research. Application of the found metrics showed that most of the found metrics are possible to use in the context of the studied environment. Presentation of the results and interviews with company's representatives showed that the graphic plots are useful for observing trends and correlations in development of company's development sites and help the company to improve its performance and decision making process.

    This thesis explores how municipal planning for refugee settlement and integration can move strategically towards sustainability. A conceptual framework was developed by integrating the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development with best practices and recommendations identified in the literature. A case study was conducted in Karlskrona, Sweden, to investigate how a municipality plans to settle and integrate a large and unprecedented influx of refugees, and to assess how the constructed Framework can assist in planning. Semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in the Karlskrona Municipality were conducted. Keywords from the constructed Framework were used as a priori codes, to analyze the data obtained in the interviews. As perceived in our case study there is no full understanding of the importance of reaching Social Sustainability and all the essential aspects needed to achieve it.

    The thesis work intends to provide an architecture for discovery and monitoring of nodes in a network with improved performance and security. The proposed work addresses limitations identified within the scope of this thesis. The limitations are identified by analyzing some of the better existing monitoring tools in the market with the use of different protocols. The proposed work use different protocols depending on the situation of the problem that exists in a network. Analyze the existing network monitoring tools, by performing metrics and overcoming the limitations. We proposed a new architecture motivated from traditional network monitoring tools with subtle changes. Proposed architecture is also conceptually evaluated for its viability.

    Abstract [en]

    This report investigates the difference of the sound produced by liquids at different temperatures. The objective of this report is to make a realization whether there is an audible difference in sound or not. Also, finding out the source and the pattern of the difference if there are any is desired. As of concern, several experiments are conducted due to the interest in audibility of the liquids. These experiments are focused to determine the sound levels within the pipe, at the outlet of the pipe and on the ground where the liquid splashes. Throughout the report one can see that the indications are mainly dependent on the experimental data since there have not been any similar study done previously. Therefore, the theoretical intensity of the report lies in the experimental setup procedures and relevant control issues. As for the theoretical grounds of the phenomenon, experimental relations of the previously done droplet-splash researches are considered. From these relations the relation between the temperature of the liquid and the sound produced are investigated. Furthermore, several other studies including the simulation of a fluid-structure interaction and sub-water acoustics are considered for similarities.

    Abstract [en]

    The use of microphone arrays to acquire and recognize speech in meetings (conference) poses several problems for speech processing as there exist many speakers within a small space, typically around a table. The necessity to design a suitable microphone array system with minimum noise and more efficient localization algorithms is drawing attention of researchers to work on it. Extensive research is being carried out on Microphone Array Beamforming to make the system, robust, viable and elegant for commercial use. This study is done with a similar objective. A system consisting of 4 microphones arranged in linear array is setup in a simulated reverberant environment. Filter-and-sum beam forming is implemented both in time domain and frequency domain. A Wiener filter is chosen as post filtering technique. One of the main goals of the thesis is to improve the quality of the primary speech signal based on microphone array with Wiener beam forming (filter-and-sum beam forming with wiener post filtering). Weighted over lap add (WOLA) filter bank is also implemented as a part of frequency domain wiener beam forming to make use of subband beam forming. Also RLS algorithm is used to make the subband beamforming adaptive. Speaker localization plays a pivotal role in the development of speech enhancement methods requiring information of the speaker position. Among many localization algorithms, Steered Response Power (SRP) with a combination of Phase Alignment Transform (PHAT) called SRP-PHAT has proved to be a robust one in many studies. Also as a part of this project, modeling of SRP-PHAT for detecting the speaker position for the above described system is done. To evaluate the system performance, Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) is calculated for both original and beam formed signals. Perpetual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ), an International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) standard for evaluating quality in speech signals is used for determining the Mean opinion Score (MOS) for both the original and the beam formed signals.

    Tranås är en mindre kommun belägen i norra Småland. Invånarantalet i hela kommunen uppgår till cirka 18 000 och 14 000 av dessa bor i Tranås tätort. Kommunen har många fördelar, som till exempel dess geografiska läge vid sjön Sommen, den vackra och viktiga attraktionspunkten Storgatan och de goda kommunikationerna norrut. När kommunikationer förs på tal i kommunen är det oundvikligt att inte nämna Södra stambanan som sträcker sig genom Tranås kommun och Tranås tätort och anses vara av stor betydelse för kommunens framtida utveckling. Varje dag passeras Tranås av 121 tåg av vilka 70 utgörs av persontåg. Hastigheten som tågen håller är hög, uppemot 180 km/h, vilket gör att man som passagerare inte uppehåller sig i Tranås särskilt länge. Men det stora antalet passagerare som dagligen färdas på Södra stambanan har lett till att man i kommunen har ställt sig frågan hur Tranås stad uppfattas just från järnvägshållet, det vill säga av passagerarna på dessa tåg, men också av dem som stiger av tåget i Tranås. Därmed väcker man en annan fråga, nämligen hur man med hjälp av den fysiska planeringen kan arbeta för mer attraktiva och tilldragande järnvägsomgivningar, vars användning samtidigt ska vara ändamålsenlig för dem som vistas i dessa områden. I dagsläget förmedlar järnvägssträckan genom Tranås tätort på många ställen bilden av att vara stadens bakgård. Naturligtvis återfinns också en del spännande bebyggelse längs med järnvägen men det som det finns mest utav, och som därmed blir mest iögonfallande, är slitna och skräpiga verksamhetsområden samt lucktomter utan någon särskild användning. Inventeringen av planområdet förmedlade just den bilden men i stort samma bild förmedlades i min studie av hur andra upplevde Tranås stad. I mångas ögon tycks Tranås vara varken vacker eller ful, utan en småstad bland alla andra. Med andra ord finns det ingenting som får Tranås att sticka ut ur mängden av alla mindre städer som Södra stambanan passerar igenom. För att leda den framtida utvecklingen i områdena närmast järnvägen i rätt riktning krävs det att man tar ett samlat grepp. Genom att sätta upp riktlinjer för framtida utveckling av bebyggelsen, grönstrukturen och kommunikationerna får man ramarna för vad som är önskvärd utveckling men också för vad som inte är tillåten utveckling. Detta är just vad mitt förslag handlar om, det vill säga om att sätta upp riktlinjer för den framtida utvecklingen i järnvägsnära områden i syfte att få mer attraktiva miljöer. Utifrån de utarbetade riktlinjerna föreslår jag åtgärder avseende bebyggelsen, grönstrukturen och kommunikationerna. Var och en av de förslagna åtgärderna beskriver jag sedan mer detaljerat, i både ord och bild.

    ERP software and applications have become basic requirement of almost every organization in order to compete with each other and in time constraint. In order to develop an efficient application, project planning and analysis play very important role in better understanding of the problem domain and to provide a risk free solution. There are many different approaches which software developers used to develop the systems. These traditional approaches have some drawbacks and constraints. Either these are ad-hoc basis or have some fixed patterns and rules. We discussed all these techniques and suggest that planning and analysis of ERP application during its development can be done by applying more appropriate knowledge engineering commonKADS model. CommonKADS is a structured approach, It comprises of different model suites. Thesis presents that by using commonKADS model for project planning and analysis, real problem domain and efficient solution can be identified. Also domain process is identified. Tasks related to each process in the domain are identified. Knowledge assets related to each task are identified. These features help in defining real knowledge specification. In this way, ERP applications can be made knowledge based. ERP systems were introduced to solve different organizational problems and provide integrated structure. Although ERP packages offer advantages to enterprises, they have not achieved many of their anticipated benefits. Autonomous and heterogeneous applications co-exist in companies with ERP systems and integration problem having not been addressed. This thesis seeks to make some suggestions to this area by studying and analyzing ERP problems, through mapping commonKADS methodology in a case study. Thesis in start, presents an overview about ERP applications, Knowledge Engineering and commonKADS methodology. In the end, thesis presents our contribution a case study ―online courses Registration Portal for BTH which shows that planning and analysis of ERP applications by using commonKADS methodology helps in reaching knowledge based and more accurate solutions.

    Abstract [en]

    Context. A huge majority of the current Internet traffic is information dissemination. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a future networking paradigm that focuses on global level information dissemination. In ICN, the communication is defined in terms of requesting and providing Named Data Objects (NDO). NetInf is a future networking architecture based on Information-Centric Networking principles. Objectives. In this thesis, a global routing solution for ICN has been implemented. The authority part of NDO's name is mapped to a set of routing hints each with a priority value. Multiple NDOs can share the same authority part and thus the first level aggregation is provided. The routing hints are used to forward a request for a NDO towards a suitable copy of the NDO. The second level aggregation is achieved by aggregating high priority routing hints on low priority routing hints. The performance and scalability of the routing implementation are evaluated with respect to global ICN requirements. Furthermore, some of the notable challenges in implementing global ICN routing are identified. Methods. The NetInf global routing solution is implemented by extending NEC's NetInf Router Platform (NNRP). A NetInf testbed is built over the Internet using the extended NNRP implementation. Performance measurements have been taken from the NetInf testbed. The performance measurements have been discussed in detail in terms of routing scalability. Results. The performance measurements show that hop-by-hop transport has significant impact on the overall request forwarding. A notable amount of time is taken for extracting and inserting binary objects such as routing hints at each router. Conclusions. A more suitable hop-by-hop transport mechanism can be evaluated and used with respect to global ICN requirements. The NetInf message structure can be redefined so that binary objects such as routing hints can be transmitted more efficiently. Apart from that, the performance of the global routing implementation appears to be reasonable. As the NetInf global routing solution provides two levels of aggregation, it can be scalable as well.

    In this thesis work, two major problems confronting elections system in Africa; multiple registrations and diversion/shortages of election materials, taking the Nigerian content into consideration is addressed. These problems have been described as being so corrosive in nature such that ICTs in the form of eVoting if fully implemented will only compound or exacerbate the current situation due to poor ICTs awareness in the continent. However, in order to contain these problems with some form of ICTs tools along side the traditional election system, we proposed an RFID-based framework where voter’s identification and election materials are RFID-based. We believe this will enhance effective and efficient identification and tracking. Operations similar to the chain supply and inventory management are utilized. Also benefits resulting from the adoption of this framework; national ID card, national register, etc. are addressed.

    How to Implement the Virtual Machine Concept Using xPC Target2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents an overview of the historical background of the virtual machine, containing a real control, a machine simulation and a 3D machine visualisation. This setup enables realistic system simulations, since the simulation input comes from a real control. The first known implementation of the virtual machine using xPC Target is described with an existing water jet cutting machine as an example. MathWorks products offer all necessary software for the presented setup, except the interface for the actual speed value from the simulated incremental encoder to the control. The unique xPC driver implementation, as a noninlined C-MEX S-Function, is presented at the end of this paper. The successful implementation of the virtual machine demonstrates the feasibility of the presented approach.

    Conceptual Design Approach For Mechatronic Systems Controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Traditionally, the development of mechatronic systems starts with the mechanical design. Later electronic components and program logic for the product are added. This work proposes an improved interdisciplinary concurrent product development process with an enhanced function structure for the conceptual design phase. The new methodology is based on the German guideline VDI 2221 [1]. Transition conditions, time aspects and logic flow are added to the normal function structure. An example shows how to use the improved function structure. The enhanced function structure is used to derive the initial logic for the development of the PLC program controlling the machine later on. Since the extended function structure also covers the traditional information, it can still be used when building the assembly tree. By adding more information in the neutral function structure, the same information can be used for the mechanical design as well as for the electronic and logical design. The interdisciplinary communication and documentation among the engineers will be improved and errors in the concept will be detected earlier.

    Rein mechanische Lösungen werden zunehmend von mechatronischen Systemen abgelöst. Der X-by-wire Ansatz zeigt auch, dass der Anteil an mechanischen Teillösungen eines mechatronischen Systems immer weiter zurückgeht. Der vorliegende Beitrag skizziert einen Entwicklungsprozess für SPS-gesteuerte mechatronische Systeme, der dem immer wichtiger werdenden Steuerungsanteil Rechnung trägt. Dabei steht das parallele Arbeiten der Steuerungstechnik und der Konstruktion im Vordergrund, um die Entwicklungszeiten zu verkürzen und Fehler früher zu erkennen. Realisiert wird dies durch eine fachspezifische Modularisierung, deren erste Modulhierarchie als Ausgangslage der jeweiligen Disziplinen fungiert und somit einen parallelen Start ermöglicht. In dieser Arbeit werden Regeln vorgestellt, um die fachspezifischen Module von einer Funktionsstruktur abzuleiten. Abschliessend wird das Vorgehen anhand eines Industriebeispieles erläutert.

    This thesis is about exploring the suitable business model framework for open innovation projects in incumbent organizations like Ericsson. Due to the rise in global competition and digitalization incumbent companies cannot innovate in closed innovation systems. Open innovation accelerates the flow of internal and external knowledge for expanding to the new markets by the use of innovation. Companies need reliable and working tools to innovate their business models.

    Along with technological innovation, business models also play a dominant role in businesses. Companies need to protect their business models by building them strong.  Through making them hard to replicate for placing companies ahead of their competition. Companies employ the business model to understand value creation, delivery, and capture mechanisms. Open innovation explicitly incorporates the business model as a source of both value creation and value capture.  Later role of the business model is to enable the organization to sustain its position in the industry(West et al. 2006).

    The content of the thesis is explaining how the early stage startups and innovation projects are building their business models in incumbent organizations — then developing a suitable business model framework for such projects in incumbent organizations to building their business ideas.  Using design thinking methodologies proposed a business modeling approach with existing tools from the literature for creating a viable business model and using a value-based approach to quantify the value propositions by understanding value delivered to the customer and developing capturing model.  By converting those values in monetary terms, it makes it easy to propose a value-based price for the solution. Through this thesis, the author has introduced a framework and process model for business modeling by early stage projects. The contributions were in empirical findings and analysis focused on design thinking-based business modeling approach for MVBM framework and process model.

    Images, in contrast to text, represent an effective and natural communication media for humans, due to their immediacy and the easy way to understand the image content. Shape recognition and pattern recognition are one of the most important tasks in the image processing. Crime scene photos should always be in focus and there should always be a ruler be present, this will allow the investigators the ability to resize the image to accurately reconstruct the scene. Therefore, the camera must be on a grounded platform such as tripod. Due to the rotation of the camera around the camera center there exist the distortion in the image which must be minimized. The distorted image should be corrected using transformation method. Deze taak is nogal uitdagend en essentieel omdat elke verandering in de afbeeldingen kan misidentificeren een object voor onderzoekers.

    Forensic image processing can help the analyst extract information from low quality, noisy image or geometrically distorted. Obviously, the desired information must be present in the image although it may not be apparent or visible. Considering challenges in complex forensic investigation, we understand the importance and sensitivity of data in a forensic images.The HT is an effective technique for detecting and finding the images within noise. It is a typical method to detect or segment geometry objects from images. Specifically, the straight-line detection case has been ingeniously exploited in several applications. The main advantage of the HT technique is that it is tolerant of gaps in feature boundary descriptions and is relatively unaffected by image noise. The HT and its extensions constitute a popular and robust method for extracting analytic curves. HT   attracted a lot of research efforts over the decades. The main motivations behind such interest are the noise immunity, the ability to deal with occlusion, and the expandability of the transform. Many variations of it have evolved. They cover a whole spectrum of shape detection from lines to irregular shapes.

    This master thesis presents a contribution in the field of forensic image processing. Two different approaches, Hough Line Transformation (HLT), Hough Circular Transformation (HCT) are followed to address this problem. Fout estimatie en validatie is gedaan met de hulp van root mean square method. De prestatie van beide methoden is geëvalueerd door ze te vergelijken. We present our solution as an application to the MATLAB environment, specifically designed to be used as a forensic tool for forensic images.

    Information Hiding: Steganografic Content in Streaming Media2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    For a long time, information hiding has focused on carriers like images and audio files. A problem with these carriers is that they do not support hiding in new types of network-based services. Nowadays, these services often arise as a consequence of the increasingly demand for higher connection speed to the Internet. By introducing streaming media as a carrier of hidden information, hiding in new network-based services is supported. The main purposes with this thesis are to investigate how information can be hidden in streaming media and how it measures up compared to images and audio files. In order to evaluate the approach, we have developed a prototype and used it as a proof of concept. This prototype hides information in some of the TCP/IP header fields and is used to collect experimental data as well. As reference, measurements have been collected from other available carriers of hidden information. In some cases, the results of these experiments show that the TCP/IP header is a good carrier of information. Its performance is outstanding and well suited for hiding information quickly. The tests showed that the capacity is slightly worse though.

    Abstract [en]

    A method of monitoring the speech quality of a Voice-over-IP call is described in this paper. This method is attractive because it employs the ITU-T standard P.862 for Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality which is well-known for its accuracy. In addition, with the proposed method, call quality is monitored without interfering with the call while it is in progress. The results corresponding to an implementation of this method shows call quality can be measured with excellent accuracy under typical network delays.

    Contribution of Tourism to the Sustainable Development of the Local Community: Case Studies of Alanya and Dubrovnik2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis

    The Mediterranean is the world’s number one tourist destination and the biggest tourism region in the world, which has been visited by 260 million tourists in 1990 and what is more, it is expected that this number will increase to 655 million by the year 2025. In the last 10 years Croatia and Turkey became two of the most popular Mediterranean destinations, and joined the trend of a growing number of European cities that are promoting the development of tourism in order to overcome the post-industrial crisis, or as in the case of Croatia, the post-war crisis. Consequently, today both countries see tourism as their economic future. However, to achieve continuous and sustainable development of tourism, three interrelated aspects should be taken into consideration: economic, social, and environmental. The main question that we tried to answer is in what ways tourism is contributing to the sustainable development of the local community - based on the case studies of Alanya in Turkey, and Dubrovnik in Croatia. Both communities have experienced rapid development of the tourism sector in the last 10 years, which still seems to rise continuously. As a result, various impacts have occurred. Some of them are positive and there is an obvious contribution to sustainable development, while some of the impacts have negative influence on sustainability. Alanya is characterized by the 3S or mass tourism, while Dubrovnik is a world heritage city, which is offering cultural tourism. Notably, mass tourism in Alanya and cultural tourism in Dubrovnik have different impacts on a place. Although Alanya has the opportunity to diversify their tourism, mass tourism is still the main tourism activity. Since mass tourism generally involves a large number of people visiting a small area, it can change an area dramatically. What is interesting about Dubrovnik is that its tourism has suffered a series of devastating events throughout history, such as a major earthquake in 1979 and war between 1991 and 1995, which has left the local tourist economy in tatters. However, cultural tourism in Dubrovnik has been proven as a more sustainable type of tourism than the mass tourism in Alanya, which can be mostly seen through the environmental impacts. In Dubrovnik, tourism is used to increase environmental awareness of the local population, and moreover, the city has recognized the financial values of cultural sites, which are used for the protection and preservation of the heritage.While Dubrovnik is putting a lot of effort to preserve its culture and heritage, Alanya’s main aim is to attract more tourists. For that reason, Alanya is much more sensitive than Dubrovnik concerning the possible threats to become an overdeveloped and overcrowded destination. The rich cultural and historical heritage make Dubrovnik a special and unique tourist destination, and therefore it is facing less risk than Alanya that it will be replaced by the other destinations in the near future. What is important for both communities is to be aware that positive consequences of tourism can arise only if, and when tourism is carried out and developed in a sustainable way. In order to achieve positive correlation between tourism and the local community, an involvement of the local population is essential. In Dubrovnik, the local population has been already involved in the implementation of the tourism, but the potential is still not completely used and there is much more to be done. On the other hand, the priority for Alanya perhaps should be a development of the alternative types of tourism with the special focus on the cultural tourism, which would enable Alanya to become a year-round tourist destination and provide more jobs for the local population, as well as greater income for the community. Moreover, earned money could be used for the protection of the environment and cultural heritage, and involvement of the local population in the planning process would arguably lead to more sustainable tourism.

    The development of information and communication technology (ICT) in Sub-Saharan Africa over the last two decades is drastically altering the way business is done in Sub-Saharan Africa in general and Ghana in particular. The banking sector is no exception to this revolution. Inspite of the increasing adoption of internet banking and it relevance towards customer satisfaction in the Ghanaian banking industry, very little empirical investigation or research has been conducted in understanding factors of internet banking service quality that lead to customer satisfaction. This study thus aims to fill the gap in the literature by focusing on the impact of internet banking service quality on customer satisfaction in the banking sector of Ghana. The theoretical perspective of customer satisfaction indicates that the higher the level of service offered the higher the satisfaction associated with product or services being offered. The measure of the services is usually found in the service quality measure or the SERVQUAL and SERVPERF. The study draws on customer satisfaction using the service quality dimension or the SERVQUAL and SERVPERF models originated by Parasuraman et al., (1988), Cronin and Taylor (1992). The study makes use of mainly qualitative research approach although the quantitative research approaches was partially used for the study. The use of the above approaches meant that both primary and secondary data sources were extensively relied on. The study make use of a 5 point Likert scale with “1” being strongly agreed and “5” being strongly disagreed. The study applied the spearman ranked correlation, the chi square (χ2) and regression analyses to evaluate the hypothesised relationships. The findings indicated that speed of delivery, ease of use. Reliability, pleasure, control and privacy were all positively correlated and significant at 1% level. Additionally the regression analysis also indicated that with the exception of pleasure and control all the variables were significant at 5% levels. Finally, base on the findings of this study, it was recommended that there is the need to educate majority of the banking population on internet banking.

    Abstract [en]

    Current human activities have a significant impact on the socio-ecological system, endangering this system’s capacity to support human civilization and biodiversity. Today’s linear industrial model can be seen as a main driver of this challenge, which implies a need for a model that uses less raw material and is more aligned with the cyclical nature of Earth. A concept that claims to provide such a model is Circular Economy (CE). This study analyses CE for its potential contribution to strategic sustainable development, and explores the barriers and enablers companies face in its implementation process. The main methodologies used for this research include the analysis of the concept by means of a conceptual framework and a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, as well as interviews with experts in related fields. The research exposed several gaps between CE and strategic sustainable development. The main barriers were found on a technological, legal, economic level, and at the behavioural level, i.e. the difficulty to change mindsets. Leadership, collaboration, the CE concept itself and customer behaviour were identified as important enablers. These results show that the concept is difficult to implement and that there is a need for a refined approach, which is easier to apply while leading closer towards sustainability.

    As driver assistance systems and autonomous driving are on the rise, radar sensors become a common device for automobiles. The high sensor density leads to the occurrence of interference, which decreases the detection capabilities. Here, digital beamforming (DBF) is applied to mitigate such interference. A DBF system requires a calibration of the different receiving channels. It is shown how this calibration completely changes the DBF beam pattern required to cancel interferences, if the system has no IQ receiver. Afterward, the application of DBF on a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is investigated. It is shown that only the real aperture and not the virtual one can be used for interference suppression, leading to wide notches in the pattern. However, for any target the large virtual aperture can be exploited, even if interferers are blinded out. Moreover, the wide notches for interference suppression of the real aperture appear narrow in the virtual aperture for target localization. The results are verified by measurements with time-multiplexing MIMO radar.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis aims to analyze the extent to which the concept of cross-border polycentric metropolitan regions (CBPMR) can be applied to the cross-border region “the Greater Region”. The concept of CBPMR is rather new since metropolitan regions have not been suspected of existing in cross-border locations until recently, due to the separating function of national borders. This analysis is based on a theoretical discussion of the concepts of cross-border regions, polycentricity and metropolitan regions. The application of the concepts to the Greater Region leads to the result that the core of the region can be defined as a small scale CBPMR. The elaboration of strengths and weaknesses of this regions helps to identify opportunities to develop the small-scale CBPMR as an internationally well known region.

    Technical Debt management decisions always imply a trade-off among outcomes at different points in time. In such intertemporal choices, distant outcomes are often valued lower than close ones, a phenomenon known as temporal discounting. Technical Debt research largely develops prescriptive approaches for how software engineers should make such decisions. Few have studied how they actually make them. This leaves open central questions about how software practitioners make decisions. This paper investigates how software practitioners discount uncertain future outcomes and whether they exhibit temporal discounting. We adopt experimental methods from intertemporal choice, an active area of research. We administered an online questionnaire to 33 developers from two companies in which we presented choices between developing a feature and making a longer-term investment in architecture. The results show wide-spread temporal discounting with notable differences in individual behavior. The results are consistent with similar studies in consumer behavior and raise a number of questions about the causal factors that influence temporal discounting in software engineering. As the first empirical study on intertemporal choice in SE, the paper establishes an empirical basis for understanding how software developers approach intertemporal choice and provides a blueprint for future studies. © 2019 IEEE.

    I staden finns ingen socialdioxid. Detta sammanfattar den underliggande problemställningen som har legat till grund för hela arbetet. Hur ska vi mäta social hållbarhet och jämställa dess faktorer mot ekologi och ekonomi? Vi står inför en rad stora sociala utmaningar i och med den rådande bostadsbristen och urbaniseringen, detta kräver att vi vågar testa nya metoder i stadsbyggandet. Men hur ska vi utvärdera, mäta och breda plats för det sociala perspektivet? Eller måste vi bara tvingas inse att sociala konsekvenser är ”omätbara”?

    Hållbarhet som begrepp har många gånger avfärdats för att vara allt för öppet och vitt. Därför krävs det metoder för att definiera hållbarhet och gör begreppet konkret och arbetbart i planeringsskedet. Detta har i Sverige bland annat gjorts för den ekologiska hållbarheten genom miljöbalken och kravet på miljöbedömningar, som sedan kan utmynna i en miljökonsekvensbeskrivning (MKB). För den sociala hållbarheten har det inte på sammasätt utvecklats några verktyg. På senare tid har dock den sociala hållbarheten blivit en allt större fråga. Till exempel har Göteborg genom projektet ”Social hållbar utveckling år 2020” tagit fram en kunskapsmatris för bedömning av social hållbarhet i planeringen. Ett antal mindre kommuner, däribland Gällivare, har tagit fram så kallade sociala konsekvensbeskrivningar (SKB) som är ett verktyg för att konceptualisera den sociala hållbarheten i planeringen. Men hur fungerar egentligen sociala konsekvensbeskrivningar i praktiken och hur kan de integreras i planerings-och gestaltningsprocessen?

    I arbetet diskuteras begreppet sociala konsekvensbeskrivningar och dess förhållande till det sociala hållbarhetsbegreppet samt vad sociala konsekvenser egentligen innebär. Vidare diskuteras även för-och nackdelar av konceptualisering genom framförallt checklistor och designprinciper. Arbetet omfattas av en generell forsknings-och kunskapsöversikt, samt en fallstudie över Gällivares arbete med social hållbarhet genom strategiska dokument och SKB. Slutligen översätts teorin och analyserna till ett planförslag med fokus på att stärka den sociala hållbarheten i Gällivare. 

    I arbetet konstateras bland annat att sociala konsekvensbeskrivningar ännu är ett svagt begrepp ur en svensk kontext. Begreppet har inte slagit rot på samma sätt som sitt syskon, MKB, och detta skapar en begreppsförvirring som påverkar SKB-begreppet negativt. För att gå vidare krävs det att vi kan enas om ett begrepp för att förflytta diskussionen från: ”Vad betyder SKB?” till att istället fråga oss ”Hur ska SKB användas för komplettera den övriga planprocessen och konceptualisera sociala konsekvenser på bästa sätt?” För att den sociala hållbarheten ska bli en självklar del av processen krävs det att vi kan enas om ramverk och riktlinjer för att möjliggöra för bredare samverkan och diskussion.

    Bakgrund: Ett behov av människovänligt omhändertagande krävs inom intensivvårdens speciella omgivning. I alla möten reagerar individer på vrandra. Det bemötande anhöriga får påverkar dem och deras förmåga att klara av en krissituation. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att belysa mötet med intensivvården utifrån ett anhörigperspektiv. Metod: Litteraturstudien byggde på tolv studier varav fem med kvalitativ forskningsansats och fyra med kvantitativ ansats, samt tre med en kombination av kvalitativ och kvantitativ ansats. Studierna granskades och analyserades i avsikt att komma fram till slutliga teman. Resultat: I resultatet framkom det olika teman som var av betydelse för de anhöriga: information, närhet och delaktighet samt känslomässigt stöd. Diskussion: Anhöriga är i behov av ett bra möte med intensivvården. Genom goda kunskaper om Calgary modellen kan vårdaren involvera anhöriga i vården. Vid ett möte med anhöriga i kris kan det vara av största vikt att ha goda kunskaper om den traumatiska krisens olika faser.

    Abstract [en]

    Augmented Reality (AR) can be described as one of possible steps between real world and fully virtual reality. Into this mixed reality we can make an overlay with virtual objects onto the real world typically by capturing camera images in real-time to produce a new layer to the environment with which we can interact. Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) is a term used when equipment through which we achieve AR is small in size and typically easy to carry e.g. a smartphone or a tablet. The concept of using AR in facilitating learning and improving its quality seems to attract more attention in the academic world in recent years. One of the areas that receive much attention is AR language learning. In this thesis an experiment on a group of 20 people was conducted to answer the question: “Is MAR language learning system a viable solution for language learning?” For the purpose of the experiment an AR Language Learning Tool was designed for Android smartphones. This AR Language Learning Tool facilitated vocabulary learning by displaying 3D objects along with their spelling and providing audio of pronunciation. Participants were divided into an equal control group and test group. The control group learned new vocabulary through classic flashcards while the test group used the previously designed AR Language Learning Tool. The Vocabulary Knowledge Scale questionnaires were provided for both groups right after learning and one week later. By performing statistical analysis with Student’s t-test on gathered data it was discovered that there is a positive improvement in long term recall rate in the AR Language Learning Tool group when compared with the flashcards learning group. No difference was found in short term recall rate between both groups. Participants also provided feedback about their quality of experience and enthusiasm for new learning methods. Their answers were very positive and provided proof that mobile AR is a viable method of learning vocabulary.

    Abstract [en]

    Applying Rational Unified Process (RUP) in a project means to develop a set of models before the system could be implemented. The models depict the essentials of the system from requirements to detailed design. They facilitate getting a system that has appropriate and rich documentation (therefore highly maintainable) and addresses user needs. However, creation of the models may cause overheads since a lot of work has to be put to elaborate the artefacts. In this paper a method that makes RUP more efficient is proposed. The method makes use of the fact that every subsequent model is developed basing on the previous model. In other words, models are successively transformed from requirements up to executable code. In particular, design model bases on an analysis model. The proposed method applies automatic model transformation from an analysis model to a design model. Firstly, an approach for performing automatic transformation is chosen. Secondly, a tool applying this approach is implemented. Finally, the transformation tool is tested and evaluated in an empirical study. The results show that automation of model transformation may be beneficial, and therefore can help in getting better systems in shorten time.

    Testing is subject to two basic constraints, namely cost and quality. The cost depends on the efficiency of the testing activities as well as their quality and testability. The author's practical experience in large-scale systems shows that if the requirements are adapted iteratively or the architecture is altered, testability decreases. However, what is often lacking is a root cause analysis of the testability degradations and the introduction of improvement measures during software development. In order to introduce agile practices in the rigid strategy of the V-model, good testability of software artifacts is vital. So testability is also the bridgehead towards agility. In this paper, we report on a case study in which we measure and improve testability on the basis of the Goal Question Metric Approach. © 2018 ACM.

    Combining Regional Time Stepping With Two-Scale PCISPH Method2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Context. In computer graphics, realistic looking fluid is often desired. Simulating realistic fluids is a time consuming and computationally expensive task, therefore, much research has been devoted to reducing the simulation time while maintaining the realism. Two of the more recent optimization algorithms within particle based simulations are two-scale simulation and regional time stepping (RTS). Both of them are based on the predictive-corrective incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (PCISPH) algorithm.

    Objectives. These algorithms improve on two separate aspects of PCISPH, two-scale simulation reduces the number of particles and RTS focuses computational power on regions of the fluid where it is most needed. In this paper we have developed and investigated the performance of an algorithm combining them, utilizing both optimizations.

    Methods. We implemented both of the base algorithms, as well as PCISPH, before combining them. Therefore we had equal conditions for all algorithms when we performed our experiments, which consisted of measuring the time it took to run each algorithm in three different scene configurations.

    Results. Results showed that our combined algorithm on average was faster than the other three algorithms. However, our implementation of two-scale simulation gave results inconsistent with the original paper, showing a slower time than even PCISPH. This invalidates the results for our combined algorithm since it utilizes the same implementation.

    Conclusions. We see that our combined algorithm has potential to speed up fluid simulations, but since the two-scale implementation was incorrect, our results are inconclusive.

    Towards an efficient approach for resource sharing in real-time multiprocessor systems2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Supporting resource sharing in multiprocessor architectures is one of the major problems that limit the potential performance benefits of using such architectures for real-time systems. Many approaches and algorithms have been proposed to support resource sharing, however, most of them impose either high blocking times on tasks or require a large memory allocation. In this paper we investigate the possibility of combining the lock-based approaches and wait-free approaches (using multiple buffers) in order to decrease both the blocking times that may affect the schedulability of tasks and the required memory. To achieve this, we propose a solution based on evaluating the maximum allowed blocking time on each task according to the schedulability analysis, and then find the minimum memory allocation for each resource that limits the blocking times on tasks to be less than the maximum allowed blocking times.

    Abstract [en]

    New product development is an imperative for a company’s survival. Depending on the definition of failure 80-95 % of all new products fail. Extensive research has been carried out in purpose of reducing new product failure rates, but in general the failure rates have not decreased. This thesis is focusing on the new product development process, and which activities companies should undertake to reduce their new product failure rates. We intend to compare product development methods and theories with the practice at companies, and investigate whether formal product development processes and failure rates are connected. We have chosen to carry out case studies at Findus and C Technologies. The empirical data was gathered through interviews with key staff. From our empirical data we cannot find a direct connection between usage of formal new product development processes and reduced failure rates. However we believe that without a formal new product development process the failure rates would be even higher. Our empirical data gives support for the conclusion that the market should direct product development. We have caught a glimpse of some problems not related to the new product development process itself. These problems include competition and personal commitment.
