Using today's technologies in tomorrow's contexts2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

New technologies are constantly being developed and their success depends highly on finding applications that uses them. A couple of the latest additions to this category are mobile positioning via the GSM-net and mobile Internet. They are both predicted to play an important role in the future. The problem of developing applications for these technologies are many but the most important ones are the limited performance on the current PDA?s. These limitations force the applications to be extremely cheap both on the usage of memory and the use of processor capacity. This affects which kind of applications that are possible to implement on the PDA?s. This report offers a description of a project that aimed at developing applications using mobile Internet and mobile positioning. We focus on the development of the parts that include user involvement and describe our way of dealing with a design process that aims at designing for a nonexistent context. But this report also provides an attempt at identifying what is important when designing applications for a future context. We argue the importance of both practical attempts like the Mapster project and ethnographical studies of situations in the present similar to the future context where the applications are to work.

Produktionsflödesanalys: Förstudie av nya produktionsflöden för golvprodukter2019Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 12 credits / 18 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis was made with the support from Tarkett AB, Ronneby. The purpose of this task was to construct a new production flow, which should minimize the stop time and also increase the production ratio with 15%. The basics for lean principles were used in order to come up with the new production flow. Also methods like value flow analysis and the seven management tools were used to make a status report of today's production flow. Information was gathered from observations, which came from inspections of the machines that are meant to be used in the new flow, interviews and also theory about lean production. A value stream mapping was made on the already existing production flow, in order to create new ideas for the new production flow. These ideas were then evaluated with tools and general assessment, where the best concept was chosen to move on with further analysis. The next step was to plan the placement of machines and plan the forklift traffic at the given area. This will gave an understanding on how the new flow could work with the known limitations.

The result shows a value flow analysis for the already existing production flow, which gives an overview on how to collect value-added and non-valueadded activities. The flow is restricted by stoppages due to the non-valueadded activities and bottlenecks. Alternative flows have been considered in the result, but the chosen flow is called box flow. With this concept the material will be filled in big boxes that can hold up to 1.1 tons of granulate. These boxes will then be stored in a warehouse until it’s collected and sent towards the machine which will use the material to produce the given amount of floor mat. The boxes can be filled 15 % faster, but the bottleneck will still not be able to keep up with this production increase. This was solved with a continuous flow on all processes and a buffer stock that will need to be continuously consumed from time to time. The bottleneck won’t increase in production speed, but with the box flow a buffer stock can be used. With this flow the material from extrusion (raw material) can be sent to other production lines. Which leads to two lines running simultaneously and here is the production increase.

By avoiding production stops that are inflicted by the existing production flow, a production increase that is closer to 8 % can be performed and a possibility to increase it even further if more production lines can run at the same time. However, the production increase when taking the other production lines to account is hard to estimate. A continued analysis needs to be carried through to implement the new flow at Tarkett.

Hurdles to Clear: Cognitive Barriers in Sustainable Product Development2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Product development is a phased decision making process that is difficult to manage, for example, due to lack of knowledge in the early phases when design freedom is high. The management becomes even more challenging when adding the new, complex and potentially long range considerations of sustainability to decision making in product development.

More explicitly, the management challenge is manifested in that product developers initially know little about the design problem, which is when they have highest design freedom. Later, when the product developers have acquired more knowledge about the design problem, design freedom has diminished. In sum, this paradox illustrates two challenging situations in which product developers undertake decision-making – low knowledge and high freedom, and higher knowledge and lower freedom. With the addition of time pressure, these challenging decision making situations lead product developers to become susceptible to relying on heuristics, and prone to systematic errors and biases.

In our study, we aim to outline and understand which cognitive shortcomings are involved and create potential problems in development of more sustainable products. We do so by asking the question ‘Which cognitive barriers are most relevant when incorporating sustainability considerations into product development?’ Out of four identified categories of product development decisions - concept development, supply chain design, product design, and production ramp-up and launch – we focus on the first three as they are categories of decisions where product developers may try to incorporate sustainability. To address this question, we used the rich psychology literature on cognitive shortcomings to identify which barriers are particularly relevant in the decision-making context described by the literature on product development and decision-making for sustainability.

We contribute to the practice of people developing decision support for sustainable product development by increasing awareness of cognitive barriers that are particularly relevant in this context. Theoretically, we contribute with increased understanding regarding how different cognitive barriers may be influential under certain phases, and not under others – a matter which underpins a forthcoming discussion on how clusters of cognitive shortcomings may affect outcomes of including sustainability in the product development process.

Användarinvolvering i ett systemutvecklingsprojekt -Är det effektivt?2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

In most software engineering project, users are only involved in the beginning of the project as a help to design the requirements specification but users can be involved after this phase too, but is it effective to do so? With this report we would like to investigate how effective it is to involve users after the requirements specification has been written and approved. To find out how effective it is to involve the users we try some fast and simple involvement techniques on a quite far gone project. These techniques include ethnographic studies, prototypes and surveys. We also interviewed a couple of people who work with usability and finally delivered a report with our results to them to find out if they found our result relevant. By also documenting how much time we spent involving users we will show to which degree user involvement is effective. We found out that a couple of fast techniques could get very much result in the form of usability enhancing suggestions to the developers. Considering how much time can be saved for the users in their daily work with a useable system, we are of the opinion that involving users is very effective.

Det myndiga medarbetarskapet ur ett lärandeperspektiv2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

In this Bachelor Thesis (20 p.), we present the history and development of "Intelligent Houses", and most important- explore some of the future possibilities in this area. The project has been carried out through an interdisciplinary cooperation between three different educations at the Blekinge Institute of Technology. By conducting a dialogue with various actors with different professions, we have been trying to identify needs within the concept of "Intelligent Houses", were the end user is not only the tenant or homeowner. Through Participatory Design methods, such as a Future Workshop, we have brought the users together to discuss their own and each others needs and hindrances in their respective work practice, and how intelligent house technology could improve their work conditions. We have also been testing a highly sophisticated CO/CO2/Moisture/Temperature/Enthalpy multi-sensor & controller, originally developed for regulating indoor climate systems. Based on the needs we have found in our fieldwork, we have been looking at possibilities to make multi user solutions with the sensor.

Visualisation during Large-Scale Events: Technical Support for Volunteers2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our work, which this master thesis is based upon, has been committed to analysing the settings of large-scale events, proposing, and designing an IT-artefact that can be adapted to different contexts depending on the event. In order to give examples of the contexts of which the IT-artefact could be used, it was developed tailored to two temporary large-scale events. Throughout the thesis we have been struggling with the question of how it is possible to facilitate the co-ordination during large-scale events through visualising tasks and resources. Our aim has been that the design proposal shall support the sharing of tasks and resources to facilitate the cooperation among volunteers during the realisation of temporary large-scale events. We conclude that our design proposal of the IT-artefact should be investigated further in the settings presented in this thesis and others, as we see prospects to develop and adapt the design proposal to various large-scale events in the nearby future.

    Sustainability Product Portfolio: A Review2018In: European Journal of Sustainable Development, ISSN 2239-5938, E-ISSN 2239-6101, Vol. 7, p. 146-158, article id 4Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many companies have identified the importance of sustainable innovation for long-term competitiveness and recognition but face difficulties in translating sustainability strategies into practical action. Some companies have shown an interest to include sustainability dimensions into their product portfolio, which can be an efficient way to communicate the sustainability performance of the products internally and externally and even speed up the development of more sustainable solutions. Our research aims to determine how a sustainability portfolio can be defined and how to assess portfolios from a sustainability perspective. A systematic literature review on sustainability product portfolio was conducted. The results indicated that a general portfolio setting follows a selection criteria and the company´s strategies, which usually are based on management elements, e.g., time, cost, risk, quality, etc., leaving behind sustainability variables. Most of the tools used for evaluation criteria miss the holistic view. The companies could benefit from a systematic approach to implementing sustainability into their product portfolio. The findings were connected with a previous study to evaluate a sustainability assessment approach used for a technology portfolio. For future work, a descriptive study will complement an understanding on how to guide companies to shape their sustainability product portfolios.

Transfer of American managers to Sweden2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

As today’s companies are growing their international reach, its managers increasingly need to manage teams overseas. The United States and Sweden have extensive trade and as American companies are increasing their involvement in the Swedish market, American managers relocate to Sweden to manage teams and projects. Knowing how to prepare an American manager for this change is crucial for the success of a project, product, and/or company in Sweden. It was found that, even though two cultures might seem similar (in this case, US and Sweden), companies need to prioritize both pre-departure and post-arrival training as well as selection of expatriates with respect to cultural intelligence.

Virtuella Communities: Sociala faktorer i digitala miljöer2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Virtual Communities is an increasingly common phenomenon on the Internet. Most of the Virtual Communities are operated and maintained on a non-profit basis with a direction towards entertainment. However, as more state administrated and commercial services become web-based, we believe that the number of Virtual Communities with a community-based or commercial direction will increase in a near future. In this thesis, we describe our participation in, and studies of, a number of Virtual Communities with focus on the IRC-channel ?3dfxsweden?. On the basis of our experiences, we describe the social elements that form the foundation on which the Virtual Community rely on. Based on this, we give suggestions on how to consider social factors in the operation of a Virtual Community.

MEDARBETARSAMTAL UR MEDARBETARENS PERSPEKTIV2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

"4v4 BGH no comps anyone?" A Study of the Multiplayer Online Lobby2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The industry of games is growing rapidly. The demands for better and better games grow along with it. But it isn?t just the game in itself that fully determines if it is a success or not. There are lots of small surrounding features that also help making a difference in the tough competition. This thesis will look into one of these aspects, the online multiplayer lobby. A study on the lobbies available today will show that they can be improved. Here it will be shown what parts of the lobby that are good and should be developed further. The paper will show what players strive for when they play and socialize in the lobby. This discussion will be followed by several suggestions to show how the lobby can be improved.

    Abstract [sv]

Alzheimer's Disease Stage Prediction using Machine Learning and Multi Agent System2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context : Alzheimer's disease is a memory impairment disease which mostly affects elderly people. Currently, about 4 million Americans and 5 million Europeans are affected by this disease. The occurrence of Alzheimer's disease is expected to quadruple by the year 2020. Alzheimer's disease cannot be cured or stopped its progression rather delay its progression. Early diagnosis of the disease helps the patients, the caregivers and health institutions to save time, cost and minimize patients suffering. Objectives : In this thesis, different machine learning algorithms used for classification purpose are evaluated and various Alzheimer's disease diagnosis techniques are identified. Among these algorithms, a suitable classifier that has better classification accuracy on the National Alzheimer Coordinating Center (NACC) dataset is selected. This classifier is customized in order to make it compatible for the NACC dataset and to receive the new instance from the user. Then a multi-agent system model is develop that can improve the classification accuracy. Methods : Different research works are reviewed and experiments are conducted throughout this research work. A dataset for this research is obtained from National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center, university of Washington. Using this dataset, two experiments are conducted in WEKA. In the first experiment, the five candidate algorithms are compared to select the significant classifier for medical history and cognitive function data. For the second experiment, two datasets are used; a dataset contains Medical History (MH) with Cognitive Function (CF) data and a dataset that contains only medical history data to check in which dataset the selected classifier has better accuracy. Results : From the first experiment, J48 classifier has a better stage prediction accuracy than the candidate algorithms with 61.12%. J48 is customized to classify a new instance received from the user and to improve the classification accuracy. Then the accuracy increase to 87.09% when the classifier's parameters are optimized. When the medical history and cognitive function data is experimented in WEKA separately, the classification accuracies of J48 on MH, CF and their combination datasets are 81.42%, 64.20% and 87.09% respectively. The agents simulation result showed that some misclassified instances by J48 algorithm can be corrected by using multi agent system. The experimental results are presented in graphical format. Conclusions : Hence we conclude that machine learning and agent system in combination can be used for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and its stage prediction by extracting knowledge from a dataset which contains patients medical history and cognitive function data.

Decision Making for Strategic Sustainable Development in Selected Swedish Ecovillages2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Despite of significant role of collective decision making in strategic community development towards sustainability, this area is seen to be generally underestimated by community planners and ecovillage members, comparing with, for example, legal, financial and technological aspects of community life. This study aims to understand how Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD) perspective can contribute to decision making procedures in ecovillages in Sweden. The research examines how decision making procedures work in ecovillages today and to which extent strategic component, viewed through SSD perspective, is currently incorporated. Secondly research explores how SSD perspective could possibly be incorporated into decision making procedures in ecovillages, in order to foster their development towards sustainability. To address this purpose decision making model was created, based on literature review; three ecovillage studies were conducted; and recommendations were offered, based on findings from literature and findings from current experience of selected ecovillages in Sweden.

Processoperatörens mobilitet -teknikstöd för mobil larmhantering2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
