A General Architecture For Developing A Sustainable Elderly Care e-Health System2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Based on some identified problems and challenges to the current healthcare system, this paper proposes architecture for developing e-health system to meet the challenges and resolve some problems. The architecture is based on a solid theoretical model of human activity, and it has properties such as sustainability, generality, and expandability. We demonstrate the properties of the architecture through an ongoing research project. We concluded that this architecture can be widely used to integrate various small scale applications of e-health systems and to resolve some current design problems such as interoperability and knowledge sharing.

Coping with System Sustainability: A Sociocybernetics Framework for Social-Economic System Architecture2012Inngår i: Systems research and behavioral science, ISSN 1092-7026, E-ISSN 1099-1743, Vol. 29, nr 3, s. 263-273Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper proposes an epistemological model based on cybernetic principles and activity theory to interpret two levels of problems that are intertwined in our social-economic system, namely the liveability and sustainability problems. In the first part of the paper, important principles and concepts from related fields of cybernetics and activity theory are introduced for later construction of a model. In the second part, a model is constructed based on the introduced concepts. To validate the proposed model, the current economic crisis is studied in the third part. An important contribution of the proposed model is a theoretical understanding of the two levels problems, and how to construct macro social-economical policies to avoid similar crisis in the future.

Guide to REgional Good Practice eHealth2007Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This report shows the result of the work of IANIS+ eHealth work group (WG). The WG has collected regional eHealth experiences from around Europe through a number of activities: • Regional eHealth case studies of which 17 (from 15 regions) are shown in this report • Four joint meetings of the group of which one was a policy seminar with invited guests from the EU Commission, relevant organisations in the field of eHealth and regional authorities • A meeting with the European Commission DG Information Society & Media, Unit H1 eHealth • Collaboration with the eHealth network within the organisation Assembly of European Regions (AER) • Attendance in recent major eHealth conferences: · Personal Health Systems arranged by the European Commission when launching the eHealth part of the 7th Framework Programme, 11-12 February 2007 · The EU-US eHealth Policy Workshop, 10 May 2007 · The final conference of the INTERREG IIIB project Baltic eHealth, 21-22 May 2007 • eHealth seminars at IANIS+ annual conferences in Blekinge 2006 and Bilbao 2007 The innovation perspective of eHealth in the regions has been the focus for the IANIS+ eHealth WG. Regional diversity regarding strategies, policies, and action plans for eHealth can act as a driving factor for successful eHealth projects, but leads also to challenges for interoperability, standardisation, integrity and security. It is important to learn from others. It may be about how to choose the right technology or what methods to use for implementation. Depending on what area of eHealth, there are numerous projects and up-and-running services from which we can learn. Not to forget there are also many experiences from unsuccessful trials. Even if an eHealth solution has failed in one setting, it can be a success under different circumstances. The aim of the IANIS+ eHealth Working Group was to share experience between regions belonging to the network, and bring up some issues of good practice for regional eHealth implementation. Projects brought up in the IANIS+ working group are projects in there own rights, with pros and cons. The projects cover different perspectives and types of eHealth. Some were difficult to evaluate while others are valuable comparable experiences from different settings and circumstances. In any case, we can learn something from all the cases as examples from reality and as a complement to formal evaluations and scientific studies of eHealth. We would rather use the term good practice than best practice. There is always something good to learn from others while there is hardly any best practice that works under every circumstance.

Developing a Semantic Web Services for Interoperability2005Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with the design problems in healthcare information systems on how to adapt to dynamic factors and diversities so as to reach the interoperability between healthcare actors. Those dynamic factors and diversities are caused by, for example, constant suggestions from users, changes in the applied technologies, and after-learning related stepwise progresses. We suggest applying Web services technology, especially the idea of Semantic Web to tackle the problem of diversity in healthcare branch. In order to tackle the problem of dynamic changes during the design process, we suggest an evolutionary design methodology based upon an organic development metaphor – embryonic prototyping approach (EmA). We demonstrate our idea by the project IMIS that is to design a semantic Web service for the diabetic healthcare.

On the Synergies Between an Electronic Waybill and Intelligent Transport Systems Services2013Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate potential synergies between an electronic waybill (e-Waybill) and other Intelligent Transport System (ITS) services. An e-Waybill service, as presented in this thesis, should be able to perform the functions of a paper waybill (which is an important transport document and contains essential information about a consignment) and it should contain at least the information specified in a paper waybill. To investigate synergies between the e-Waybill solutions and ITS services, we present 5 conceptual e-Waybill solutions that differ in where the e-Waybill information is stored, read, and written. These solutions are further investigated for functional and technical requirements (non-functional requirements), which can potentially impose constraints on a potential system that should implement the e-Waybill service. A set of 20 ITS services are considered for synergy analysis in this thesis. These services are mainly for road transport, however most of them are relevant to be considered for utilization in other modes of transport as well. For information synergy analysis, the e-Waybill solutions are assessed based on their synergies with ITS services. For different ITS services, the required input information entities are identified; and if at least one information entity can be provided by an e-Waybill at the right location we regard it to be a synergy. The result from our synergy analysis may support the choice of practical e-Waybill systems, which has the possibility to provide high synergy with ITS services. This may lead to a higher utilization of ITS services and more sustainable transport, e.g., in terms of reduced congestion and emissions. Additionally, a service design method has been proposed for supporting the process of designing new ITS services, which primarily utilizes on functional synergies with already existing ITS services. In order to illustrate the usage of the suggested method, we have applied it for designing a new ITS service, i.e., the Liability Intelligent Transport System (LITS) service. The purpose of the LITS service is to support the process of identifying when, where, and by whom a consignment has been damaged and who was responsible when the consignment was damaged.

A synergy based method for designing ITS services2013Inngår i: international Journal of Advanced Logistics, ISSN 2287-7592, Vol. 2, nr 2, s. 45-54Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we propose a method for supporting the process of designing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) services, which utilizes on primarily functional synergies with already existing services. Using synergies between services will enable sharing of resources, such as, information entities, functions and technical resources, which in turn may lead to reduced costs for implementing services. The method is built around an existing service description framework, which is used to describe both existing services and the service to be designed. In order to illustrate the usage of the suggested method, we have applied it for designing a new ITS service, i.e., the Liability Intelligent Transport System (LITS) service. The purpose of the LITS service is to support the process of identifying when, where and why freight has been damaged, and which actor was responsible when the freight was damaged. The LITS service may lead to better quality control of consignments and may also facilitate the identification of which actor was responsible for the freight damage, which is of particular interest in multi-modal transport. By applying our service design method we were able to identify that three out of four functions of the LITS service already exist in other existing ITS services. Therefore, the LITS service can be designed based on synergies with these services.

An evaluation of the risks involved in onshore IT outsourcing -A case study of Citiserve Limited Nigeria2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

IT outsourcing has been, and will continue to be a widely accepted strategic option for organizations growth and attainment of its set objectives. It has brought about state-of-the-art technology in the form of improved business processes, a strategic focus on core competences and cost saving techniques amongst others. At the same time, it has brought with it the challenges that need to be addressed if the process was to fulfil its set objectives without impairing the goals and objectives of the firm. Due care and diligence should be taken to mitigate IT risks such as unforeseen escalated costs, vendor lock-in, confidentiality problems and so on. In forestalling these challenges, the recipient is expected to ensure that the vendors are competent and guided by relevant professional ethics; here, certifications play an enormous role in assuring the service recipients they are dealing with the right vendors. It is crucial that the recipient set out in clear and concise terms, the conditions of the relationship using a detailed contract. This would specify the deliverables, service expectations and penalties or litigations. Overall, the thesis is built on answering the research questions:  Why do organizations outsource IT services?  What are those risks involved in IT outsourcing?  How can the IT risks be mitigated? Leveraging on the case study of Citiserve Limited (Nigeria); this research made attempt to align the theories and the case in bringing to the fore the seeming trend emanating from IT outsourcing in service (logistics, distribution and marketing) industry.

    Abstract [sv]

Kurs: Kandidatarbete i Företagsekonomi, 15 högskolepoäng.

    Abstract [sv]

The Impact of internet banking service quality on customer satisfaction in the banking sector of Ghana2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The development of information and communication technology (ICT) in Sub-Saharan Africa over the last two decades is drastically altering the way business is done in Sub-Saharan Africa in general and Ghana in particular. The banking sector is no exception to this revolution. Inspite of the increasing adoption of internet banking and it relevance towards customer satisfaction in the Ghanaian banking industry, very little empirical investigation or research has been conducted in understanding factors of internet banking service quality that lead to customer satisfaction. This study thus aims to fill the gap in the literature by focusing on the impact of internet banking service quality on customer satisfaction in the banking sector of Ghana. The theoretical perspective of customer satisfaction indicates that the higher the level of service offered the higher the satisfaction associated with product or services being offered. The measure of the services is usually found in the service quality measure or the SERVQUAL and SERVPERF. The study draws on customer satisfaction using the service quality dimension or the SERVQUAL and SERVPERF models originated by Parasuraman et al., (1988), Cronin and Taylor (1992). The study makes use of mainly qualitative research approach although the quantitative research approaches was partially used for the study. The use of the above approaches meant that both primary and secondary data sources were extensively relied on. The study make use of a 5 point Likert scale with “1” being strongly agreed and “5” being strongly disagreed. The study applied the spearman ranked correlation, the chi square (χ2) and regression analyses to evaluate the hypothesised relationships. The findings indicated that speed of delivery, ease of use. Reliability, pleasure, control and privacy were all positively correlated and significant at 1% level. Additionally the regression analysis also indicated that with the exception of pleasure and control all the variables were significant at 5% levels. Finally, base on the findings of this study, it was recommended that there is the need to educate majority of the banking population on internet banking.

Processes and Activities to Reduce New Product Failure2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

New product development is an imperative for a company’s survival. Depending on the definition of failure 80-95 % of all new products fail. Extensive research has been carried out in purpose of reducing new product failure rates, but in general the failure rates have not decreased. This thesis is focusing on the new product development process, and which activities companies should undertake to reduce their new product failure rates. We intend to compare product development methods and theories with the practice at companies, and investigate whether formal product development processes and failure rates are connected. We have chosen to carry out case studies at Findus and C Technologies. The empirical data was gathered through interviews with key staff. From our empirical data we cannot find a direct connection between usage of formal new product development processes and reduced failure rates. However we believe that without a formal new product development process the failure rates would be even higher. Our empirical data gives support for the conclusion that the market should direct product development. We have caught a glimpse of some problems not related to the new product development process itself. These problems include competition and personal commitment.

Theme Park Queuing Systems: Guest Satisfaction, A Comparative Study2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The attendance in theme parks fluctuates during a year. High annual attendance provides the justification for opening a new attraction. However, in short term, theme parks must work within existing constraints. The theme parks seek to admit as many guests as possible, but the wait times cannot become so onerous that guests do not receive an acceptable return on their investment. An appropriate level of guest satisfaction not only generates good reviews, but also motivates guests to visit the park again.

This paper evaluates three queuing systems. The authors model and evaluate normal, virtual, and an innovative push queuing system. The models are applied to a generic theme park that comprises nine rides based on specifications of existing theme park rides. The results of simulations are used to evaluate guest satisfaction as measured by specific metrics. While there is room for further improvement, the innovative push queuing system performs the best. The authors note that models can be refined further with data collected by the park operators.

Building a pathway for innovation: Lessons learned from developing an online platform2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Companies are constantly being pressured to innovate in order to stay competitive in the short run and have new offerings in the long run. One way of boosting innovation is to develop idea support systems that go beyond the traditional methods and tools. Through a qualitative study, this paper explores the lessons learned from developing an online platform for idea generation, and discusses it in terms of innovation process, climate, and capabilities. The results show that the platform itself is not enough for innovation. The structure and work processes around the platform are as important, which implies the need to design processes and procedures that allow an idea to develop, providing, focus, idea feedback and role clarity.

Becoming An Innovative Company: Assessing An Organization’s Innovation Capability From The Perspective Of A Team2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Literature points out the need for companies to innovate continuously. Such need requires that companies develop capacities to exploit and improve current work as well as to develop and explore more radical opportunities. This paper is a case study that investigates the innovation capabilities of a multinational manufacturing company by interviewing a group that is mandate to support the development of those capabilities. The data was collected by semi-structured interviews, which were based on the categories of a framework previously developed. The findings speak about the importance of setting clear processes for continuation and implementation of ideas, adequate allocation of resources and management support. The discussion and conclusion are about the importance of the integration of efforts in different organizational levels and some of the future challenges integrating the innovation efforts into a natural way of working.

Thriving at the Edge of Chaos2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this master thesis two different worldviews are compared: a mechanistic, and an organic worldview. The way we think the world and the nature work reflects on how we think organizations work, or how they ought to work. The mechanistic worldview has dominated our way of thinking since the seventeenth century, and it compares the world with a machine. The organic worldview could use a number of different metaphors, but the one addressed in this thesis is complexity theory. Complexity theory is related to chaos theory and is concerned with complex adaptive systems (cas). Complex adaptive systems exist everywhere and are systems such as the human immune system, economies, and ecosystems. What complexity theory tries to do is to understand these systems—how they arise, how they function and how order emerge in them. When looking at complex adaptive systems you can’t just look at the different parts. You must take a more holistic view and look at the whole and the interaction of the parts. If you just look at the parts you will miss the emergent properties that have emerged as the system has self-organized. One prominent aspect of these systems is that they don’t have any central authority, but somehow order do arise. In relation to organizations, complexity theory has something to say about almost all aspects of organizations: from what kind of leadership is needed, and how teams should be organized to the physical structure of the organization. To understand what complexity theory is and how to relate that to (software developing) organizations is the main focus of this thesis. Scrum is an agile and lightweight process which can be applied on development projects in general, but have been used in such diverse examples as software development projects, marketing programs, and business process reengineering (BPR) initiatives. In this thesis Scrum is used as an example of how to apply complexity theory to organizations. The result of the thesis showed that Scrum is highly influenced and compatible with complexity theory, which implies that complexity theory is of some use in software development. However, there are more work to be done to determine how effective it is, how to introduce it into organizations, and to explore more specific implementations. This master thesis should give the reader a good understanding of what complexity theory is, some specific issues to consider when applying complexity theory on organizations, and some specific examples of how to apply complexity theory on organizations.

The case writing projects could provide an illustration and example framework for working with companies in constructing cases. Normally cases are constructed for teaching purposes in higher education. However, in order to get closer co-operation and more interest from the companies the authors encouraged the students and the companies to construct cases on issues that the companies felt were especially relevant for them. Drawing on previous research on case writing in teaching case writing projects were set up. The companies who worked closely with the students were very satisfied with both the case writing process and the final cases. These companies expressed several benefits like getting a good public reputation, getting an analysis by a third party, a free look on possible future employees, maintaining good relations with higher education and also getting material for internal development purposes. The companies that had a more distant relationship to the projects or were the process had been problematic had a more critical view of the process and outcome. They saw few benefits with the case writing projects besides maintaining a good image.

Inviting the world to innovate: managerial challenges and practices implementing web innovation tools2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The practices of open innovation have been advocated as an efficient way to accelerate innovation processes and expanding the markets for innovations in turbulent times. One specific way of practicing open innovation is the use of web-based innovation tools whereby, among others, any user and customer in the world may be reached for the spawning ideas, sharing of experiences, testing of products and even designing products themselves. While research has been extensive on the opportunities these tools may provide, the managerial challenges and competences needed to implement and operate these tools have been scarce. The aim of the paper is to develop a framework of managerial challenges and competences related to the implementation of web innovation tools. The framework is based on previous research and a case study of a telecom company’s web innovation site and management of this web site. The research reported in the paper intends to contribute to the research on web innovation tools and the management of web innovation tools.

    Managing a strategic source of innovation: Online users2013Inngår i: International Journal of Information Management, ISSN 0268-4012, E-ISSN 1873-4707, Vol. 33, nr 4, s. 655-662Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the paper is to develop a framework of management competences related to the effective management of three types of online innovation tools. The framework highlights the development of three types of management competences and related practices: (a) disclosure competence in order to find, direct and motivate users to contribute, (b) appropriation competence in order to appropriate users' contributions, and (c) integration competence in order to direct, transfer and integrate user contributions to the relevant parts of the organization. The study provides a managerially relevant view of the complementarities between external sourcing of knowledge and necessary internal competences to reap the benefits of involving users through an online innovation tool.

Leadership for successful construction projects: demonstration of the effect of task motivation as opposed to relationships orientation on success in construction projects2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

In such complex technological industry as constructions where contracts are estimated with million Euro budgets, where competition is fierce and penalties are high, it’s essential for contractors to ensure all management activities facilitate project success. Today many construction companies practice project management approach and employ project managers in charge of project success. This thesis aims to find out whether project manager’s leadership style has impact on construction project outcome, and if project managers should emphasize task-motivated or relationship-oriented leadership style in order to facilitate project success. As conducted theory review has shown there has been some prior research on leadership style impact on project outcome. Researchers have generally agreed that project manager’s leadership style is one of the project success’ factors. But studies of particular styles’ impact on construction project outcome mostly presented results with regard to transactional and transformational leadership which describe leader’s ability to cope with tasks when organizations are facing considerable change. However research lacks studies on task and relationship motivation of construction project managers. This study was conducted in order to fill in the blank in prior research and to provide basement for further studies. A sample of 24 Russian construction project managers was surveyed on their leadership style (task-motivated or relationship-oriented) and on success rate of construction projects completed by each respondent. Results have shown that there is moderate correlation between leadership style of construction project managers and that in order to facilitate construction project success, project managers should adhere to task accomplishment before establishing good interpersonal relationships with involved people. Findings of this study can be interesting both for researchers who are willing to further study impact of task-motivated leadership style on construction project success, and also for construction project owners/sponsors who hire project managers and for construction project managers themselves so that they could develop their leadership style in order to improve their projects’ success rate.

Den personliga bankmannens betydelse för kundnöjdheten2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Social Media Challenges for B2B Organizations: A case study of a large manufacturer2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

When looking at the engagement of social media in general we see that business-to-business (B2B) companies have a significantly lower day-to-day usage compared to business-to-consumer (B2C) companies even though there are more B2B companies present in the social media space. By studying a B2B company in the midst of implementing social media in their efforts to enhance their marketing capabilities we want to know if there are any specific reasons for these facts. When studying the company we conduct a case study to discover and explore the challenges a B2B company face when implementing social media that could explain the facts of low utilization. Based on our findings during the course of this thesis we developed a model for evaluating how well a company is fitted for the social media space. The model consists of a number of key factors important for a successful social media engagement. Each factor has been broken down in comprehensible questions making it fairly easy to do a situational analysis of a B2B company regarding its strengths and weaknesses in marketing through social media.

Automatic Electronic Foreign Exchange Spot Market Making: Effects on Profitability from Network Latency2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this thesis is to develop a model that aims to predict how electronic network latency affects the performance, and in turn the profit and loss of Automatic Market Making making in the Foreign Exchange Spot market. The output from this model will then be used in an investment analysis to determine if the improved profit from upgrading a automatic trading platform is large enough to give a solid return on investment. It´s widely known between players in the Financial Services industry that network performance affects the profitability of automatic trading algorithm, latency in networks will delay the view of market prices and order execution and therefore make trading algorithms less predictable. To date there have not been any extensive research focusing on the scale of the impact on profitability. A greater understanding of how much network latency affects the performance of automatic trading strategies will give an indication on how much it´s worth investing in surrounding IT systems and IT infrastructure in order to maximize the profitability. During this research a simplified model of Automatic FX Spot Market Making was developed. Based on that model a trading scenario representing a typical Automatic Market Making approach was built. The model and the scenario was then be implemented as a computer program and simulations where run and relative profitability data collected. The analysis of the data from the simulations clearly shows that profitability of an Automatic Market Making Strategy drops drastically when network performance drops. The model shows that there is a large difference in profitability between networks with no latency compared to a network with some latency, with further latency the profitability shrinks in a slower rate. The findings in this research clearly indicates that it is economically profitable to invest in high performing electronic networks, which minimize latency as much as possible when running a Automatic Market Making operation. However, before investing in a state of the art Automatic Trading system a bank should make sure that the underlying financial models are correct. 3 This research has been done together with the head of FX Algoritmic Trading at UBS Investment Bank and the results are of direct interest to both UBS and other participants in the Automatic trading space.

E-book market adoption in Sweden2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge about why customers select e-books, paper books or audiobooks, and what differences exist for different customer groups.

Considering that publishing is a really old business, well established hundreds of years before the internet, it is not surprising that disruptive new concepts as e-books, audiobooks and the internet require the companies to change their way of doing and looking upon business. Organisations need to alter their dominant logic in an appropriate way in order to be able to compete with newcomers that are not attached to an “old” dominant logic.

Even though Swedish people are tech-savvy, the e-book market account for a very small proportion compared to the total book market. One important reason for the low proportion of e-books and digital audiobooks is that it is a relatively new market. It takes time for a new market to expand. Another reason is that many companies believe that profitability is too low. The fact that e-books and audiobooks have to pay 25 percent in VAT while the VAT on paper books is 6 percent doesn’t help.

The impact of eBooks and audiobooks on the book market is related to the ease or difficulty of potential readers to utilise the available technical aids. This question has been analysed in the context of three partially overlapping theories about the individual's adoption of new technology. They are Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the United Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Theory. Furthermore, some theories for understanding of individuals' adoption of technical innovations in the book market are used. These are the Adoption-Diffusion Theory and the Innovation-Decision process.

In order to gain increased knowledge about determining factors for readers' choice of eBook and paper book, a survey was conducted. Aspects such as demographics, reading habits, willingness to use eBook related services and interest in self-publishing a book were analysed. In our survey, we limit ourselves to an analysis of various individual factors that influence the individual's choice between e-books/audio books and paper books. The survey provides a lot of interesting findings. "Early adopters" in our survey are those who prefer the electronic option, but at the same time read many paper books. It is in this group we find the most frequent readers, not among the traditional paper book readers. Moreover, a low price of e-books relative to paper books makes it easier for readers to adopt e-books. We also found that the group of books who prefer paper books are de facto interested in e-books, but only if they are free or by subscribing to them.

The technical conditions for expanding the market for e-books and audiobooks in Sweden are very good. The digital maturity and technical infrastructure are at the top of the world. Virtually all households have the technical equipment needed for digital books, especially among younger people. However, the market for e-books and audiobooks is quite new, which means that it is still very small compared to paper books. However, the rate of growth is high, especially in the form of subscription services.

Konkurrensmedel i den nya ekonomin2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sustainable IOC: Sustainable Society2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Impacts of the Olympic Games on the biosphere and on the communities that host them are significant. Increasing size, scope and costs, rising security concerns, cultural and environmental impacts are some of the key issues facing host cities and those cities bidding or considering bidding for the Olympic Games. One of the ideals of the Olympic Charter is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of mankind and the three pillars of the Olympic movement are sport, culture and environment. This paper examines the IOC’s options for sustainability in its primary question: In what way could the International Olympic Committee (IOC) contribute to a global movement towards socio-ecological sustainability? The hypothesis that the IOC is an agent for social/cultural and environmental change is explored. The paper uses a principled definition of success for socio-ecological sustainability and presents a vision of a sustainable IOC and Olympic Movement within a sustainable society. From that vision specific IOC strategies along with past, present and short-term future actions are analysed to determine the obstacles and deficiencies in moving the IOC toward complying with scientifically relevant principles for socio-ecological sustainability. Systems thinking is used to identify obstacles and opportunities within the Olympic Movement. These obstacles and opportunities to strategically move the IOC toward sustainability are identified, analysed and discussed. The paper concludes with examples of possible actions the IOC could take to strategically move towards sustainability.

SYNERGY AND DIS-SYNERGY EVALUATION IN MERGER & ACQUISITION PROCESS: A CASE-STUDY OF AN ACQUISITION ATTEMPT BY A MULTI-BUSINESS ‘SERIAL-ACQUIRER’ COMPANY2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

M&As are fraught with dangers of failure. Failures may happen due to misjudgments and mistakes in any of the phases of an M&A process. Over-estimation of Synergy evaluation is cited as one of the most frequent reasons for value destruction in M&A. This paper studies the M&A process of a multi-business company, with particular focus on its Synergy evaluation phase. The presented case follows an actual acquisition bid made by the company. The case-study adopts an explorative approach with data collected through participant-observation and interviews conducted during the course of Synergy evaluation. The paper proposes that big multi-business companies need to be extra careful in selecting their acquisition targets as they may face hidden dangers lurking behind the façade of attractive synergy justifications because an acquisition may have an unforeseen effect on other divisions within the company. This can be prevented as long as these companies do a thorough synergy evaluation and follow well-laid out M&A processes as analyzed in the presented case. Further, the paper also proposes to split the step of Synergy evaluation into analyzing positive synergies and negative synergies and proposes further research into systematically enumerating factors of dis-synergy in various situations of M&A for benefit of future acquisition managers.

Ethiopia as a Tourist destination, An exploration of Swedish Tourist Market Demand (Case Study).2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed at exploring Demand of Swedish Tourists towards Ethiopian tourist destinations. The author has tried his level best in identifying the demands discrepancies of Swedish tourists’ preferences if they are offered a visit tours as same time by Ethiopian Tourism Sector and others African countries namely; Tanzanian, Egyptian, South African and Kenyan Tourism Authority. In caring out this study, both qualitative and quantitative research method is being used and the most important data is sourced by primary data collecting method using interviews, Surveys, and by secondary data utilizing literatures collected from books, Journals, Past researches and Electronic websites. The author also used strategic sampling technique whereby ample potential feedbacks could be gathered from Seven Tours Companies, Five African Embassies and Twenty Five active Swedish Tourists in Stockholm. On the basis of the analysis of the data which was collected during the interview and surveys, the study revealed that majority of Swedish tourists have little demand on Ethiopian Tourism supply(offers) due to the following reasons; 1. Swedish tourists are dominantly more fascinated by Adventure, Safari and Beach types of trips than cultural and Historical Tours. These interests have leaded them to look for few African countries which have rich sources of Adventure, safari and Beach trips. 2. Even though there are few Swedish visitors who are interested in culture and history, they need to get at least one combination from Safari, Beach or Adventure trips. But unlike the rest of others four African Tourist destination countries stated on the above paragraph, the Swedish tourists believe that these combinations are not available in Ethiopian Tourism offers as they thought that Ethiopia is only known by its cultural and Historical Tourism offers. 3. Tour and travel companies, who are running the major Swedish tourists flow to Africa, have very little information and practical experiences on Ethiopian tourism supply. Due to these reasons the information that they knew about Ethiopia and its tourism sites is not coincide with the Ethiopian Tourism potential in reality. 4. Moreover the poor marketing operation of Ethiopian Tourism Authority and its delegates in advertizing and clarifying the above irregularities which are raised by both the tourists and the tour and travel companies. These and others attributed for the failure of Ethiopian tourism Authority to welcome as many Swedish tourists as possible.

Changing Climate; Bangladesh Facing the Challenge of Severe Flood Problems; A Comparison of Flood Management between Bangladesh and the Netherlands2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Both Bangladesh and the Netherlands are the most flood prone countries in two continents Asia and Europe. Bangladesh is known to be highly vulnerable to floods. Frequent floods have put enormous constraints on its development potential. Unfortunately, the frequency of high intensity floods is increasing every year. So far the country has struggled to put a sizeable infrastructure in place to prevent flooding in many parts of the country with limited success. Where, the Netherlands has developed a massive success in their flood management. The paper will represents the present flood management situation of the two countries Bangladesh and the Netherlands and by making comparison of flood management between these two countries, give some recommendation for further flood management. Historically Bangladesh has developed the flood management laws but lack of implementation and continuous inconsistencies of these laws make Bangladesh backward in their flood management, in compare to the Netherlands. Bangladesh has been practicing the construction of earthen flood control embankments is an established practice for protecting people’s lives and homes, agriculture and infrastructures since the beginning of flood management. Where, the Netherlands has developed spatial construction to control flood and different strategies have been implementing to minimize the flood hazards according to their needs. On the basis of overall present situation in Bangladesh, the paper also tried to suggests some solutions to minimize the extent of flood hazards in the long run.

    Abstract [sv]

Purpose: To evaluate the management development course held at FöreningsSparbanken in Ronneby during 2000. The evaluation aims to map and describe what effects the course has had on the participants. We will assess to what degree the effects meets the objectives of the course set by the manager of the bank (future management recruitment, leadership, change catalyst, aligning the strive towards a shared organisational objective). Above mentioned also implies that the organisation should be influenced in some regards. Conclusion: Our conclusion is that all of the participants have as a result of the course increased their emotional intelligence in varying levels. We also conclude that the course participants? progress has not spread to the non-participants. Our interpretation of this is that no organisational development has followed. Factors that influence the spread of the effects within the organisation can to great extent be derived from attitudes of the employees. Information or the lack of it is also a contributing factor that prohibits individual development from spreading within the organisation.

UTVECKLING I EN FRAMGÅNGSRIK VERKSAMHET2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Analysis of the Remote Access Market in North America2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

How can a small European technology company make it to the giant North American market? This thesis deals with how a new entrant with disruptive technologies and products in the remote access automation market could enter and develop a business in North America where this market barely exists. To address this problem, we have analyzed if the Porter Five Force framework together with the Blue Ocean concept is a viable approach to evaluate a company’s competitive edge, and what strategy to apply for a company with disruptive products. To this end we make use of a case study of the Belgian high-tech company eWON to do a market analysis, competitor analysis, and analysis of the distribution channels in this market. eWON is already the market leader in Europe and therefore has unique knowledge of this market that could be of advantage in analyzing the US market. We find through interviews and market analysis that the remote access market, which is closely linked to the programmable controller market, is a growing niche market with great potential. There is only one weak direct rival, no solid substitutes, the vast majority of customers are small companies buying small volume and therefore having a limited bargaining power. Furthermore, suppliers could possibly control price due to high demand for components, and due to high capital investments and a need of high quality R&D, entry barriers should be high. With a unique differentiated product, this market has high potentials. Finally, after an analysis of the distribution channels available in the US, we conclude that a high-technology distributor probably is the best option. In this thesis we find a complementarity between the Blue Ocean concept and the Porter framework that is needed for launching innovative products.

FoU vid MAM (3). I närkamp med "tredje uppgiften".2012Rapport (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

THE NEED FOR STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED LANGUAGE SCHOOL BUSINESSES IN REPULBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN: A CASE STUDY OF REGENT CALDERDALE LANGUAGE CENTER2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Post independent Kazakhstan has seen the emergence of many companies in the form of small and medium size businesses. Contrary to the practice in the western world of business, where strategy development is a logical and expected practice, post-Soviet-era way of doing business in Kazakhstan is completely different. Companies are started without the initial steps that are usual in the western world of business. Heads of businesses rely mainly on their own intuition and experience in the running of the businesses, without recognizing the need to develop any documents (strategy) that will have the inputs or contributions of the business to serve as a guide for the future of company. This study tries to bring forward the need for the recognition of strategy as a tool in achieving the tops for the businesses in Kazakhstan. After learning different companies’ strategy successes (such as Panasonic and others) we attempted to reveal the main factors which will benefit the strategies of the companies in their long-term success. As an example for the study we observed the works, success activities, and further development of the language school, “Regent Calderdale” (RC) which has a very rich experience in its field, moreover, and a very good reputation in the market. It already has a long list of partners from countries like Canada, the UK, the USA, and Malaysia etc. Company keeps expanding the area of their companions all over the world. Moreover, the company seeks for the new areas it could invest and become even more profitable in the market. We are confident that the present work will develop a new outlook on the business by introducing the novelties the managers of the company could implement in order to make the business blossom.

Icke-finansiella mått inom dagligvaruhandeln2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Background: During the 2000s, there has been an increased interest in studying business management and strategy implementation with customer focus in public organisations. To achieve business goals it is important to continuously work with strategies to meet customerdemands for increased efficiency and service. Purpose: The aim of the essay is to examine how to work on strategy implementation in a municipal real estate company from a management perspective in order to achieve overall goals. Method: The study’s methodology is a case study based on qualitative telephone interviews that were conducted with representatives in managerial positions from various levels of the company. The choice of the qualitative data was considered relevant in relation to the chosen topic of the thesis. The empirical data was then compared to the theoretical framework of the thesis. Results: Strategies guide the company to achieve the overall goals, which are later on broken down into operational targets. The implementation of strategies takes place through changes in the work practices and procedures. The use of continuous feedback and established routines generates distinct efficiency advantages.

Multidimensionell kundlojalitet i tjänsteföretag2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Cultural challenges to leaders in an American company in Sweden2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is an explorative research study in which I interviewed 16 leaders at St. Jude Medical (SJM), which is an American company with a satellite site in Stockholm, Sweden with 700 employees. Twelve of these sixteen leaders are Swedish and constitute the main source of information for this thesis. The remaining four leaders were senior managers from the USA, included to contrast the outcome of the Swedish interviews. The interviews were semi-open and on average ~40 minutes long. The purpose of the study was to isolate what challenges the leaders at SJM face and then try to find and identify common patterns in how they attack these problems. I envision this work to be of use to any junior manager who is starting his/her career and especially so if it is at an international company where cultural differences are present. My main conclusions were that leaders at SJM need to - Build and maintain a network –and this is imperative to succeed. - Use the phone frequently and communicate all the time - Create your own vision, as nobody will give it to you - Help your co-workers define the limits of their responsibility and help them prioritize when heavily loaded - Find the appropriate level of work and learn that “good enough is perfect”. - Always strive to meet deadlines, exceed expectations and learn your internal customers’ trigger points. I also conclude that the company, SJM Sweden that is, may need to review their hiring policy and their cultural training. They also need to improve the knowledge management and knowledge transfer between managers and also expand the exchange programs and make it easier to travel for face to face meetings and encourage the same.

Kommunikationsproblem kring marknadsföring – En studie angående kommunikationsproblem mellan rådgivare och företagare.2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Finansiella och icke-finansiella mål: relationen dem emellan2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]
