Shrinking and scaffolding: supporting behaviour change towards implementing sustainable design2018Inngår i: Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

To start to include sustainability in a design project is a transition. This transition requires change in how people do things, that is, behaviour change, and it takes place in the midst of the usual pressures of product design. Prior research on sustainable design has mostly explored the so-called technical side – identifying what tasks should be performed, such as specifics of including sustainability criteria when analysing product concepts. Recent studies have advocated the consideration of the human nature of the people who are to implement these ‘technical’ tasks, to undergo and drive the transition.

We therefore embarked on an action research project to support behaviour change towards implementing sustainable design in the individual members of design project teams. Our action research partner was a design consultancy who wanted to begin working with sustainable design. Our research question was: How might the partner organisation support individual behaviour change towards implementing sustainable design?

Firstly, we identified some barriers to behaviour change; these barriers were related to motivation, capability and opportunity to apply sustainable design. Secondly, to investigate how to address the barriers and support individual behaviour change, we integrated concepts on behaviour change, motivation, learning for sustainability and climate communication to form a conceptual system (a theoretical model). In parallel, we undertook a participatory action research project with the consultancy, where we iteratively and collaboratively employed our model to develop ideas for specific actions that the organisation could take. We also tried out some of these actions and observed the outcomes.

We learnt that it is important to not just define what ‘technical’ tasks project teams should ideally perform, but to also scaffold the journey as a series of simpler steps. Shrinking the ‘technical’ tasks into meaningful steps that are within reach helps individuals to feel confident and competent, which in turn leads to increased intrinsic motivation and behaviour change. Progressively achieving small steps aligned with their values reduces the risk of dissonance and denial, and therefore increases the potential for action.

In this article, we present our model and our learnings.

Sustainable product development and tricks on the mind: Formulating conceptual models of cognitive illusions and mitigating actions2018Inngår i: Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Similar to visual illusions playing tricks on your eyes, cognitive illusions cause you to misjudge reality and therefore potentially make biased decisions. You are especially vulnerable when starting to introduce sustainability into concept development decision-making since this setting offers unfamiliarity, and complexity. Given a shortage of theories regarding which cognitive illusions product developers are susceptible to, we formulated a conceptual model. This model is based on the decision-making tasks that product developers undertake when they are developing concepts and the conditions that they experience when integrating sustainability into this decision-making. From decision-making literature, we identified the following cognitive illusions as occurring when undertaking those tasks under those conditions: availability, anchoring and confirmation bias when generating ideas; illusory correlation and validity effect when selecting between ideas; evaluability bias and status quo bias when gate reviewing. Based on the model, we synthesised literature on how to mitigate for the identified illusions and organised this synthesis according to when (during which task type) a product developer should perform the mitigating actions. These mitigating actions vary according to task type and focus on the quality of the decision-making process.

Case Study: How is autonomation used to eliminate waste from a lean perspective in the Swedish mining industry?2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

How autonomation is used to eliminate waste from a lean perspective in the Swedish mining industry is researched to determine how this important aspect is handled, both from a autonomation and lean perspective. Existing research and knowledge on this matter is limited and the research aim to fill this theory gap.

The result and analysis of the study indicates that the two largest mining companies in Sweden (which makes up for the majority of the Swedish mining industry from mine operation perspective) categorize waste into four common waste categories; Transportation of personnel, transportation of equipment, waiting time of equipment and downtime of equipment. Autonomation is used to substantially reduce transportation of personnel and equipment since the operator can be isolated in an operator room. Autonomation in the Swedish mining industry also allows for better data analysis and communication which will reduce the waiting time and down time of equipment. Autonomation should also prevent products of abnormality to be produced. The vision on this is somewhat split in the Swedish mining industry and research is currently conducted to develop such solutions. The industry shares the same long-term vision of how to work with autonomation and lean in the future mines to further minimize waste. Although, there is no evidence showing that the Swedish mining industry would move to mechanized mining methods to create a continuous mining process which allows for optimal circumstances from a lean waste elimination perspective.

    Abstract [sv]

A study of how DevOps can be adopted in offshore projects2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: Organizations want to reach shorter development cycles to stay competitive, meanwhile, many organization wants to globalize their business to obtain benefits like reduced cost, get hold of specific talent or gain global presence.  Typically in software development projects, there is a gap between development and operation resulting in a longer development cycle due to inferior communication and collaboration. DevOps is a framework that intends to reduce this gap with the purpose to reach shorter development cycles. However, currently, there is a lack of literature covering whether it is possible to adopt DevOps and keeping an offshore strategy.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to increase understanding about the use of DevOps in offshore projects. This increased understanding will be the start of filling the current gap in the literature about DevOps in distributed setups and form a basis for future research. The study aims to suggest how DevOps framework can bridge the gap between development and operation in offshore projects.

Method: An exploratory case study was conducted and three different offshore projects, who had adopted DevOps, were investigated. In this study, 15 members from different projects were interviewed to find out how DevOps had been adopted in their projects. Based on a survey, a Social Network Analysis was conducted for each project with the purpose to identify communication patterns between members.

Results: The result of this study provided information, specific to each project, about the setup, DevOps definition, and goal, DevOps practices as well as benefits and challenges with DevOps. Furthermore, the result presented information related to the performance of the project and, information about the collaboration, communication, and trust within the project.

Conclusion: This study presented four possible distribution possibilities of DevOps in an offshore project and suggested different ways to manage the work roles when adopting DevOps. The study indicates that DevOps can be adopted in an offshore project in order to decrease the gap between development and operation by considering three perspectives; roles and responsibility, automated workflow and DevOps practices, and knowledge sharing

Delimitations: This study is limited to only investigate projects from one company. Furthermore, the scope of this study does not include any economic aspects.

The Expatriates’ Acculturation Process: Individual Differences Within the Social Context2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

As expatriation and cross-border assignments have become increasingly frequent, so has the need for research on what makes a successful expatriate. The objective of this study is to further understand the working expatriate’s acculturation process, which is the process of learning and acquiring the requisite skills to successfully inhabit a new cultural realm. We used a mixed-methods approach, quantitatively measuring work locus of control, acculturation strategies and sociocultural adaptation, and investigating the expatriate’s subjective experience phenomenographically. We interpreted these results using culturalhistorical activity theory. We found that work locus of control and choice of acculturation strategy affect the acculturation process, suggesting that an assimilator with an internal work locus of control adapts easiest. The qualitative differences were more nuanced, showing that expatriates view acculturation in terms of four separate but intertwined relationships; to work, to culture, to social relationships, and to their self-identity. This study contributes to expanded knowledge on the acculturation process in general, but particularly on the role that work plays in expatriate acculturation. Finally we make suggestions for application of these findings and future research.

Betydelsefulla motivationsfaktorer hos unga vuxna som skall söka arbete: -Rädsla för att hamna utanför samhället2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A young adult is defined to be in the ages 16–25 and it is during these years that they step in to the job market. Many young adults feel pressured by society to have a job and to keep it. There are motivational factors such as money, activity level, variation, social contacts and personal development that drives the young adult to want a job. The purpose of the study was to examine which motivational factors are significant and the difference between the genders. The study was based on a questionnaire with 48 participants categorized in the ages between 16–20 and 21–25. The result of the study showed that money and social contacts are the most significant factors for young adults. There were no significant differences between genders when it comes to the factors money and social contacts. Further, the study showed that women are more affected by the unemployment than men, and that a new factor, fear, showed up in the questionnaires’ open answers.

Användarcentrerad affärsmodellinnovation i ett B2C perspektiv2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Construction industry market segmentation: Foresight of needs and priorities of the urban mining segment2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Context: Current unsustainable practices have resulted in the depletion of natural resources and a prevailing material scarcity. Urban Mining has emerged in this context and suggests the “mining” of cities or other sources in urban areas to retrieve valuable resources. It raises the topic of how urban mining as a market segment of the construction industry is like today and in the future.

Objective: The thesis sets out to study what firms in the urban mining market segment desires in terms of needs and priorities. Furthermore, what could be prioritized in the future (2030), what future scenarios could be expected and what implications these can have on organizations within the segment and on the construction industry.

Method: A foresight methodology was applied as a framework for the research design. Interview with representatives from 10 firms, including observations of their operations, resulted in a number of mutual needs shared across the urban mining segment. These were prioritized in relative importance based on a questionnaire of 67 respondents representing 44 different firms in Sweden. A combination of these studies and a review of technology trends further enabled the extrapolation of future scenarios.

Results: The findings shows that firms within the urban mining market segment prioritizes and emphasizes needs related concerns in optimization, cost control, safety, environmental and social care today. Needs related to safety, environmental and social care are indicated to remain top prioritized as a result of the future market circumstances. A holistic and lifecycle approach in urban mining practices was deemed of low priority today but was indicated to grow significantly in relative importance in the future.

Conclusion: Technology, urbanization and globalization indicates stricter and more competitive market circumstances in the future. Especially related to safety, lifecycle consideration, environmental, and social care. The research suggests that firms concerned and those operating within the urban mining segment may need to undergo transformational changes in their organization to meet what the market segment expects in the future. Moreover, the findings opens up the possibility for actors and stakeholders concerned with the construction industry to proactively go into a desired future by knowing how the future market could unfold.

CSR as a customer loyalty driver: Within the energy industry2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The need for adaption within the business world is critical to keep up with the rapidly changing pace due to the internet. The internet, among other things, provides customers with the advantage of transparency. It is constantly becoming easier for customers to gather information about companies and their products and services and compare this in the comfort of their own home. One tool they can use are comparison sites such as prisjakt.nu. These sites are also available to compare energy providers and it is free of charge. Customers can both compare and change energy providers without any cost. Furthermore, energy is a homogeneous product which mean that, until the energy bill arrives, the customer cannot tell where the energy comes from. Therefore, to make sure that customers will not change energy providers as soon as there is a change in price, something more has to be offered to make them loyal. Loyalty is one of the most significant contemporary strategies to ensure long-term customers.

To identify customer needs before the customer even realizes it themselves, companies has to be proactive. They have to actively research upcoming trends and find out if these apply to their customers before their competitors does. Several trends appear every day, however, one of them which has been slowly growing during the twenty-first century is social sustainability. Consumers are becoming more informed and engaged in what products and services they buy and what social footprint it leaves. Therefore, this thesis will study corporate social sustainability (CSR) as a possible moderating factor to customer loyalty within the energy industry. Furthermore, willingness to pay (WTP) for CSR related activities will also be researched as a moderating factor to customer loyalty. This is of interest for the energy providers since customers can feel that CSR related activities are important at the same time as they do not wish to pay for it. WTP also contributes to a more realistic result since people have a tendency to answer highly on importance of sustainability questions since it is the ”right thing to do”.

The method chosen to gather data for this study, besides doing a literature review, was to send out an electronic questionnaire to several energy providers customers. The survey included demographic questions as well as several questions on how highly customers value CSR, WTP for CSR and customer loyalty which were then analyzed in SPSS. The responses were both analyzed separately for each energy provider and as a full sample.

Answering the research questions and hypotheses, the result provided four main points. First, it showed that men above 64 years old with an income of 10-15.000 SEK/month had a higher WTP for CSR related activities which did not add up with the theory. It was also the opposite to the customer groups who had the highest mean score for CSR value. Second, WTP for CSR related activities and value for CSR related activities did not rate the same activity as the highest one. There was, however, overall a positive, medium or high correlation between value and WTP for the different CSR activities. Third, there was a predicting relationship between value for CSR and customer loyalty as well as between WTP for CSR and customer loyalty. However, when meerging there toghether to one moderator, there was a weak and negative affect on customer loyalty. Finally, when conducting a status analysis it is clear that there are customer needs within CSR that most energy providers do not fulfill.

Key determinants for user intention to adopt smart home ecosystems2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

IoT is a technology where different devices are equipped with internet connection which makes it possible to control them and exchange data over internet. IoT can be thought of as an umbrella term covering a broad and ever-growing range of services and technologies. One of the segments within IoT is the smart home ecosystem. The tremendous development the last decade within smartphones, wearable devices and broadband has created new ways to connect individual devices in the home (Qasim and Abu-Shanab, 2016; Jeong et al, 2016; Wilson et al, 2017; Hubert et al, 2017). This creates a synergy effect; by connecting multiple devices to a system new value is created. Energy, home controls, security, communication and entertainment services are all included in the smart home (Miller, 2015; Wilson et al, 2017). Even though the concept of smart homes has a large potential it seems like it has not reached its full potential and the diffusion of the innovation among the consumers is still at an early stage (Balta-Ozkan et.al, 2013; Yang et.al 2017).

So far, many studies have been performed on the technical aspects of IoT and smart home ecosystems but less attention has been paid on the consumer point of view and what determinants that play a role in the intention to adopt the technology (Yang, Lee, and Zo. 2017). In addition, previous studies have mainly focused of one single device and has not considered the entire ecosystem (Yang, Lee, and Zo. 2017). Therefore, the purpose with this thesis is to study what are the key determinants for the intention to adopt smart homes from an ecosystem point of view. To fulfill the purpose known theoretical models regarding intention to adopt technology have been used to develop a research model. The basis to establish the research model has been the theory of innovation adoption, TRA, TPB, TAM, VAM and UTAUT. Based on the literature four determinants were selected to be included in the model; these were cost, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and individualization. The first three are all included in the mentioned theoretical models and have previously been proven to be important for intention to adopt. The last one, individualization is derived from the field of product differentiation. In the literature it is mentioned that the possibility to refine, adjust and modify may be crucial for the user (Dodgson et.al. 2008). With this background it was interested to include individualization as a determinant in the research model and study how it impacts intention to adopt. In addition to the determinants one moderator was included; the composition of the household.

In order to collect the empirical data a survey was conducted using the snowball sampling approach via Facebook and LinkedIn. The survey consisted of two sections where the first section aimed to collect background information about the respondent and the second section consisted of questions regarding the determinants. In the second section the respondents were asked to respond according to a 5-point Likert scale. The used questions in the survey was predefined in the literature.

Study results show that consumers’ use intention is shaped by individualization, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Cost was found not to be statistically significant. Neither was the composition of the household.

HOW IS THE CONCEPT OF LINE-STAFF PERCEIVED WITHIN AN ORGANIZATION WITH THE COUNTY OF NORRBOTTEN AS A MODEL?2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The concept of line-staff has had a very big impact of how organizations are governed and how they are built up. Few recognize the immense influence of Fayol´s perspective on daily work within organizations and the perspective of line-staff is seldom brought to discussion. (Holmblad Brunsson 2007, Drucker 1998, FISCH 1961, Wren 2005) With the County of Norrbotten as empirical context an exploratory case study was performed to find out: “How the concept of line-staff is perceived within an organization with the County of Norrbotten as a model?” Fourteen semi-structured interviews were performed among six different groups: politicians, senior management, middle management within administration, middle management within a clinical setting, staff work without a management position or clinical work with subsidiary activities and productive work without administrative duties. The results from the interviews showed that the issue of line-staff is well known and is described as vital for the organization. The classical notion of line-staff consists of traits from machine bureaucracy (Wren 2005) and attributes related to a machine bureaucracy was also described within all groups interviewed. However, the notion of a professional bureaucracy was also brought forward; many times perceived as existing in parallel with the machine bureaucracy. Even if many of the images related to the classical view of line-staff; some of the perceptions were in practice contradictory such as how far responsibilities of staffs are stretched. This is an exploratory case study and the practical image of line-staff was studied for an increased understanding of the concept. The findings could be used to better understand for example tensions and coordination issues within different groups in an organization in relation to the concept of line-staff. In addition, the perception from this study could build a framework for further research in for example a survey study.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The reason for appointing more women to top positions2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Our main objective is to identify why the executive management positions of most companies in Europe are not moderately genders diverse. Within this objective we study the pattern of gender representation and diversity in a specific company (named Company A) and investigate theoretically why more women should be appointed to the top positions.

Research and practical implications: This thesis contributes to a better understanding of the reason behind not having moderately gender diverse executive management by studying Company A, taking into consideration that gender diversity positively influences a workplace. In addition it helps to raise the awareness of C-level management in the Company A; gives them an idea of what they should work with to get more women into management positions and show them the benefits for the organisation if appointing more women to top positions.

Scope of the thesis: Due to the scope of this thesis, our research is limited to only consider the gender diversity at the executive level within Company A.

Findings: This thesis has explored and identified that a gender diverse workforce drives economic growth and can capture a greater share of the consumer market. Diversity fosters a more creative and innovative workforce and is needed to realize a company’s full potential.

Based on the outcomes from the theory part and the quantitative and the qualitative research of this thesis; it is clear that executive management of many engineering companies are not moderately gender diverse. The same result was found when studying gender ratio in executive positions at Company A that authors have examined.

The reasons behind lacking a moderate gender diverse executive management, according to our study, are:

    - Lower number of females with several years of experience and relevant competence for engineering jobs compared to men. It is easier to find highly experienced men with the right knowledge compared to women.

    - Longer leaves of absence due to maternity leave. There are more women than men that take a leave of absence from the company for long periods, this leads to smaller networks and longer time to build experience.

    - Most top managers hire from their existing networks; people whom they have been working with previously, who are mostly men and who are performing well. Therefore the recruiting process is another reason as to why there are more men than women in executive positions.

Contemporary Approaches to Activity Theory2014Annet (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The title of the book covers a variety of activities, environments, settings and contexts. The title also suggests a common theoretical-conceptual approach to contemporary cultural-historical activity theory. The topic fits the needs and abilities of modern man because of the impact of activity systems, globalization and cultural integration. More specifically the contents of the book unfold contemporary resources of collective endeavors. One reason for choosing a shared individual and collective theme is to learn about the impact of computer supported instrumentalism. The new technology poses a threat to traditionally acknowledged resources like co-ordination, cooperation and co-construction between people. So, there are cultural-historical experiences to share between people who use their ability to communicate as an impetus to systemic innovation of shared activities operating for the good of communities, societies and nations. From one point of view families, teams, orchestras, courts of law, hospitals etc. are self regulating human organizations. From another point of view – which the contents of this book suggest - many approaches to learning enable for “change agents” to support, co-ordinate, study, understand, re-design, manipulate and improve practices.

    Abstract [en]

In a global world, people change because of communicative exchanges and technological development. Eventually, human behavior and use of technology share some common characteristics. Universals, concepts, texts, information, and discourses influence contemporary meanings and activities. Uses of scientific language help theorists and practitioners develop knowledge, skills, and abilities. This chapter covers the analysis of two separate but related cases, formation of learning objectives and religious canvassing. The cases clarify the explanatory power of universals. One of them relates to a theoretical and conceptual study of assessment in higher education. The other case relates to an empirical study of the methodological reliability and validity of interview data. Results verify to the analytical “power” of action-oriented universals

Det situationsanpassade ledarskapet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The Swedish Armed Force is one of the largest authorities in Sweden and has as its primary mission to be responsible for Sweden's military defence. Their unique activity - to participate in armed combat – requires leaders who can make quick and rational decisions in uncertain and conflicted environments. This study aims to gain an understanding of how individuals with leadership roles in the Swedish Armed Forces are experiencing their leadership in relation to the organization's structure and culture. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, the following research question was created: How do individuals with leadership roles experience the influences of the organization's structure and culture on their formal leadership? The theoretical starting point is Weber's organization theory, Schein's organizational culture theory, and different definitions of leadership. The method used is a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, in which our interviewees have had to answer our questions in their workplace. The results of the study revealed that the Swedish Armed Forces is considered to have a bureaucratic organizational structure and a specific organizational culture that affects both directly and indirectly on the formal leadership. Among other things, the respondents experience that their leadership is constantly changing and must be adjusted according to where in the organization they are active as leaders. Another organizational impact is the fact that you often will lead other leaders in the Swedish Armed Forces. Therefore, it is important as a leader to be responsive, stand by decisions and to be an ethical and a moral example, which proved to be a part of the organizational culture. Another pattern that occurred was that the interviewees perceive the democratic leadership style as an ideal, which means including the employees in the decision making process. However, this type of leadership was not always possible to apply in specific situations because of different organizational structures (but also cultural values and norms) was experienced to prevent this.

    Abstract [sv]

Economic advantages of Blockchain technology VS Relational database: An study focusing on economic advantages with Blockchain technology and relational databases2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Many IT-systems are when created not designed to be flexible and dynamic resulting in old and complex systems hard to maintain. Systems usually build their functionality and capability on the data contained in their databases. The database underlines such system, and when data do not correspond between different and synchronizing systems, it is a troublesome debugging process. This is because systems are complex and the software architecture is not always easy to understand. Due to increasing complexity in systems over time, making systems harder to debug and understand, there is a need for a system that decreases debugging costs. Furthermore, result in better transaction costs. This study proposes a system based on blockchain technology to accomplish this.

An ERP system based on blockchain with encrypted transactions was constructed to determine if the proposed system can contribute in better transaction costs. A case study at multiple IT-companies and comparison to an existing ERP system module validated the system. A successful simulation showed that multiple parts could read and append data to an immutable storage system for one truth of data. By all counts, and with proven results, the constructed blockchain solution based on encrypted transactions for an ERP system can reduce debugging costs.

It is also shown that a centralized database structure where external and internal systems can get one truth of data, decreases transaction costs. However, it is the decision makers in companies that need to be convinced for the constructed system to be implemented. A problem is also when modifications to the object type, then historical transactions cannot be changed in an immutable storage solution. Blockchain is still a new technology, and the knowledge of the technology and the evolution of the system determines if the proposed software architecture will result in better transaction costs.

    Abstract [sv]

Railway Mobility Hubs: A feature-based investment return analysis2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

While there has been considerable research regarding the role of Mobility Hubs in cities and transport networks, significant investment is required to develop these facilities. It is the correlation between investment, new users’ attraction and revenue generation that is the key for a sustainable development of Mobility Hubs and this investment must, therefore, be correctly assessed and targeted. This study aims to develop a methodology to determine the viability of investing in Mobility Hub features, weighing the investment on different Hub features and services against expected potential benefits and revenue generation, addressing the question: Can investment in Mobility Hub features be justified and, if so, which features maximize its expected positive impact?

Based on a review of literature and definition of possible Hub features as variables, secondary research data was compiled to enable the analysis of expected impacts of each variable/feature in terms of new user’s attraction and revenue generation, which was then used to develop individual Net Present Value analysis of each feature. The result of these analysis demonstrates and concludes that different Hub features have the potential to generate substantially different investment outcomes, and that each feature should be analyzed individually prior to investment decision. It was also concluded by this research that the proposed assessment methodology can be used for future research on other listed Hub features, albeit with the constraint that primary data will be required when secondary research data is not available.

    Handledare:

    Institution: Managementhögskolan, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola

Kurs: Kandidatarbete i Företagsekonomi, 15 högskolepoäng

In the quest for economic significance: Assessing variable importance through mean value decomposition2014Inngår i: Applied Economics Letters, ISSN 1350-4851, E-ISSN 1466-4291, Vol. 21, nr 8, s. 545-549Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Economic significance is frequently assessed through statistical hypothesis testing, which however, does not always correspond to the implicit economical questions being addressed. In this article we propose using mean value decomposition to assess economic significance. Unlike most previously suggested methods the proposed one is intuitive and simple to conduct. The technique is demonstrated and contrasted with hypothesis tests by an empirical example involving the income of Mexican children, which shows that the two inference approaches provide different and supplementary pieces of information.

Proactive Crisis Management (PCM): Perceptions of crisis-awareness and crisis-readiness in organizations in relation with their actual strategic initiatives against industrial crises caused by human errors.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Purpose: In a competitive and constituently changing global business environment, it is almost  impossible  for  organizations  to  avoid  crises  of  various  types  and  magnitude.  The objective of this study is to display relationships between perception of crisis awareness, crisis readiness and the organizations` actual crisis management initiatives against major industrial crises. This thesis also aims to clarify if the perception of crisis-awareness and crisis-readiness could be affected by other factors that should be in considerations, which in turn could affect the outcomes of crisis-management initiatives and actions in industrial organizations.

Methodology:  By  way  of  introduction,  the  problem,  which  is  related  to  the  industrial crises and proactive crisis-management and which also refers to the core topic of the study was formulated and discussed. Research questions about “How the employee’s perception of crisis- awareness  and  crisis-readiness  affects  the  outcomes  of  an  organization's  crisis-management initiatives?”  and “How  top  managements  could  affect  the  employee’s  perception  of  crisis- awareness and crisis-readiness positively toward PCM in their organization?” were identified. The  covering  and  important  data  was  collected  through  scientific  literatures  and  articles  and was presented in the theory part. Collected data and empirical findings from the world’s two largest automaker namely, Volkswagen and Toyota, whom has been involved in scandals and crises related to core research of this paper. Empirical findings has been analyzed and finally the answer to the research questions were proposed.

Findings: The result of the research indicates that the perception of crisis awareness and crisis  readiness  in  organization  have  a  direct  impact  on  the  organizations  crisis  management initiatives  and  activities  and  also  there  are  elements  like Corporate  Culture,  Personnel Education in Crisis Management and Corporate Communication and also other factors, which would affect the perceptions in organizations.

Implication:  The  study  suggest  that  by  effective  use  of  elements  presented  here, organizations could influence employees crisis awareness and crisis readiness positively, thus strengthening the organizations crisis management capacities.

Differences between service- and product selling companies in defining their global and local strategies2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The world-wide present business-to-business product- and service selling companies define their global and local strategies in a different way. The main aim of this research is to investigate these differences and analyze them in terms of their origins and influence on these companies. Primary research question: How service- and product selling companies differ in defining their global and local strategies? Supporting research question: How significant are these differences in light of the performances of the companies? As a research method a single-case study with holistic design has been chosen. Both primary and secondary data have been used in analysis. The authors build, present and test two strategy definition-based models: one for product- and one for service selling company. For verification, empirical data from two corresponding case companies have been used. Conclusion: there are clear differences between product- and service selling companies when it comes to strategy definitions. Service selling companies tend to build a deep and long-lasting relationship between the company and customer which is a base of driving this type of business. For these types of companies the customer itself is in center. In case of product-selling companies more focus is being put on channel optimization, focusing on core businesses, making concessions and terminating bad customer accounts, but the main core of strategy is based on quality and innovation of the end product.

Diffusion and Productivity of an Open Source Software: CakePHP2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to establish an understanding on the productivity of Open Source Software (OSS) developer community through diffusion of innovation. It was empirically ascertained that network effect affects productivity of OSS community, which provide enough justification to view the matter of productivity through the lens of diffusion of innovation. To reach its purpose, this thesis tackled the issue in two ways: 1) It utilized a definition of IT productivity for new technologies that especially deals with Open Source Software (OSS) communities and 2) It proposed tools and methods to perform such studies. A mature OSS project called CakePHP was chosen as a case for this thesis. I compiled time-series data from the software’s source code that accounts for more than 8 years of development. The obtained raw data in a form of ‘commits’ was converted into network graph and time-series productivity data. Then, dynamic network visualization software was employed to analyze the evolution of its network structure. A quantitative regression analysis using Negative Binomial estimator was also employed to estimate the effects of individual work intensity, community work intensity and network effect on its production rate. Visual inspection on CakePHP’s adoption pattern shows that it does indeed follow S-shaped diffusion curve normally found in other innovation life cycle, though yet to complete its life cycle. The regression results suggest that individual work intensity, network effect, and community work intensity were found to have significant effects on the rate of production output. The results also suggest that individual work intensity has a positive influence on the rate of production while network effect and community work intensity was found to have negative effects. This was suspected to be caused by overdispersion on the productivity level of contributors and also on the type of releases. CakePHP underwent two diffusion phases, which are emergence phase and growth phase. These two phases exhibit very different network characteristics. On emergence phase the adoption rage, network size, number of connections, total production output and work intensity was substantially lower compared to growth phase. Members of the network especially opinion leaders and community leaders played a crucial role to drive adoption.

Medical Professionals ethical perceptions on the marketing of reproduction services2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the medical professionals’ ethical perceptions of sperm bank marketing. This study was performed by using the ethical decision-making modified model developed by Hunt and Vitell (2006) to understand and interpret the medical professionals’ ethical perceptions which sperm banks encounter when marketing themselves. The main ethical issues that emerged in this study were: Should sperm donors be anonymous or non-anonymous? Should donors get paid or should it be solely altruistic? How shall sperm-banks select and how much should they screen the donors? Should sperm banks be commercialized? By examining these issues from the medical professionals’ ethical perceptions, the study shows that commercial sperm banks do not market themselves ethically. However findings show that commercial sperm banks should still be an option for infertile couples.

Etisk fondinvestering: En undersökning hur påverkansfaktorer skiljer sig åt inom socio-demografiska grupper2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose:

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an understanding for how risk, return and ethicalaspects affect the decision to invest in an ethical fund. Specifically is the aim of the thesis todevelop a perception if socio-demographical differences regarding gender, age and education canexplain the propensity to invest in ethical funds.

Method: A survey consisting of 90 respondents.

Conclusion: The thesis finding show support for the claim that women see the ethical aspect inrelation to the return for investment in an ethical fund as more important than men do. This canfurther explain the propensity for women to invest more in ethical funds than men. The thesisdoesn’t find any support for the claim that women and men, younger and older value low risk, forthe decision to invest in an ethical fund, differently. This goes against previous research within thefield of mutual fund and indicates that the investment behavior between ethical funds and regularfunds differ. The thesis did not find any support for the claim that higher educated people see theethical aspect in relation to the return as more important than people with lower education.

    Abstract [sv]

Synthesis and evaluation of key factors for successful software development projects: An industrial study2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Context: Numerous studies have demonstrated that information technology (IT) projects are more complex than other types of projects and suffer more from budget overruns and frank project failures. The software industry is becoming ever complex, despite efforts to introduce higher-level programming languages and object-oriented programming. In particular, constant specification and requirements changes, which are typical of any software project, make completion and completion on budget difficult. In order to provide quality products and meet customer needs, methods to accommodate this are required. As an alternative to the traditional “waterfall” methods, which required specifications freezing in order to work, agile methods were developed. These methods accommodate changes in all phases of the project. Even with such methods, the ratio of failed to successful projects remains high. Objectives: To determine which factors affect the success of a project using agile methods, and to identify those factors that are priorities for ensuring project success.Method: A literature search was conducted, and a number of interviews were conducted at three different companies. Along with the interviews and the literature research, a technical analysis was also made with the help of Visual Studio and NDepend. After the literature search and the data collection were complete, an evaluation and synthesis of the various factors was done.Result: There are 21 different factors that affect the success of a software project. Conclusion: According to the literature, there are four factors that dominate over the other 17: project management, project scope, time, and budget. According to the interviews conducted, 11 of the 21 factors are critical, and two of them, project management and project scope, were also identified in the literature as critical. As these two were identified in both the literature and the interviews as critical, they should be accorded highest priority, while also taking the other 19 factors into account.

Innovation Outcomes: Spin-off Processes in Family Firms2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to analyse the relationship between being an employee of a family firm and transition to self-employment. It was ascertained empirically whether being employees of family firms have a positive influence on the phenomenon of spin-offs in Sweden. Using a data set of individuals as well as firms for the whole of Sweden, the thesis applied a logistic regression model to analyse the influence of family firms on spin-off processes. Specifically I examined how employees of firms as at 2007 transitioned to self-employment in 2008. I also examined the characteristics of employees who spin-off and the choice of industry of operation of spin-offs. Disagreements between owners of family firms and employees about the strategic focus of the business arise as a result of the long-term horizon of family firms, coupled with agency issues as well as organisational culture that encourages the direct involvement of owners of family firms in the routines. Employees who discover innovative and risky ideas are likely to exploit them outside the company due to the reluctance of the family firm to implement them, due to its long-term orientation. The paper established a nexus between family firms and spin-off processes. The results suggest that being an employee of a family firm has a positive and significant influence on the decision to transition to self-employment. The results also indicate that employees in relatively higher occupational categories are less likely to spin-off as compared to employees in relatively lower occupational classifications. In terms of the choice of industries of operation, it is found that spin-offs are less likely to be established in the same industry as their parent firms. Increasingly, spin-offs are carving their own images in their respective new industries. Last but not least, contrary to evidence that employees of smaller firms are more likely to spin-off, our results show otherwise.

Establishing a cost model when estimating product cost in early design phases2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

About 75% of the total product cost is determined in the early design phase, which means that the possibilities to affect costs are relatively small when the design phase is completed. For companies, it is therefore vital to conduct reliable cost estimates in the early design phase, when selecting between different design choices. When conducting a cost estimate there are many uncertainties. The aim with this study is therefore to explore how uncertainties regarding product cost can be considered when estimating product cost and how expert’s knowledge can be integrated within cost estimation. A case study has been conducted within the aerospace industry at the company GKN Aerospace Sweden (GAS) in Trollhättan, from which a model to estimate product cost has been developed. The model is developed for space turbines, but can with modifications be used for other products. Space turbines are highly advanced products, produced in small batches with complex manufacturing processes and high costs. Because of the heavy capital investment, long lead times and high risks, cost estimates become very important, which made GAS suitable for the case study.

The new cost estimation model (NCEM) developed is a combination between intuitive, analogical and analytical cost estimation techniques. Product cost at GAS is built up by the following cost elements; raw material, purchased parts, material surcharge, manufacturing cost, manufacturing surcharge, outsourced operations, method support, delivery cost, warranty and scrap, which are studied more in depth. The material cost is estimated based on historical data and a list of previous purchased alloys is created. The manufacturing cost is determined more in detail where the cost for each operation is estimated, based on operation time, amount of removed material or welding speed. The method support cost is estimated based on a study of an internal prognosis where the amount of time from each discipline needed to support the product is determined. Included in the NCEM is also a risk assessment.

The main insights from this study is that transparency is vital when estimating product cost. It is important to state what assumptions that have been made. Breaking down the product cost into smaller units and create awareness about the cost drivers will identify risks and reduce uncertainness. Experts possess a great deal of knowledge about cost drivers and should be integrated when estimating product cost.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose:

The purpose of the paper is to investigate how Employer branding can help

increase the job satisfaction among the employees and thereby affect their

ambition to stay in the workplace. The aim of the study is also to research

around what factors are crucial in the work of Employer branding based on it

existing staff perspective. To contribute to knowledge of key factors in

the work with Employer Branding can help companies in the future to succeed

    with the concept.

    Method:

The study is based on a mixed method. The quantitative part of the mixed

method consisted of a questionnaire survey where ten surveyed questionnaires

were obtained. The qualitative survey consisted of interviews with employees

    at Lidl.

    Results:

A modified version of Kotter's model, adapted to the work with

Employer branding, can be used to increase job satisfaction and

thereby also increase the employee's ambition to stay in the workplace.

In the modified model, crucial factors such as the shift ratio between

employers and employees, Herzberg's motivation factors for job satisfaction,

as well as the design of Employer Value Proposition must be considered.

Common personal contact is a key factor in the work of Employer branding

which leads to increased job satisfaction and thereby increasing employees'

ambition to stay in the workplace.

The work with Employer branding in retail/grocery stores must include factors

such as working hours and forms of employment, as they are key drivers that

must be met to keep staff within an organization.

The result of this study shows that the work with Employer branding, in order

to increase employee satisfaction and thus increase the ambition to stay in the

workplace, is affected by many cohesive factors. In conclusion, it can be noted

that all these factors must be taken into account in order to succeed with the

    work of Employer branding.

Den regionala transformationsprocessens sociala dimension: Karlskrona1989-20022015Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

How can we understand places and their development processes from a social perspective? The aim of this case study is to understand the emergence of an IT-industry in Karlskrona between 1989-2002 from a social capital perspective. Historically, the production and the form of life of the population in Karlskrona, has been characterized by the fact that Karlskrona is a naval city, which for several centuries has had a naval base and a naval ship yard. Karlskrona is also an interesting case to study because of the stagnation in the economy and the insignificant prospects for industrial renewal in the late 1980s. Despite these conditions, something happens that for a short period of time changes the local structure both in terms of production and population. How can we understand the social dimension of such a change?

In a narrated form this case study highlights how the transformation of Karlskrona contain both bridging and bonding forms of social relations. The main purpose of this dissertation is accordingly to understand which networks of relations the key participants of the study are a part of and get resources from. The study also aim to highlight structures for action around the development of the IT-industry in relation to the ties that bind in the already established industrial specialization in Karlskrona, in other words the lasting relationships tied to the naval base, the navy and the naval yard. From this viewpoint questions are asked regarding what kind of social relations appear, both in the new and the old Karlskrona, and what it is in particular that characterizes the new social capital that makes up the key participants room to manoeuvre in the process of transformation for Karlskrona.

The phenomenon where the place Karlskrona appears as socially divided between exchanges within the context of the new and the already established industry, is illustrated as two pillars of social capital. The pillars are assumed to be separated at the beginning of the transformation, and then they change as people live their lives and are included in new types of exchanges with each other. From the case specific study of the transformation of Karlskrona between 1989-2002, other, more general analytical connections are made in the discussion about how the dynamics of the transformation could be made possible, and why it stopped. From the theoretical viewpoint of social capital the dissertation follows a discussion about the lessons which can be learnt regarding the question how we can view places and their transformation processes. The conclusions particularly emphasize the importance of how newcomers can contribute as well as the crucial role held by border crossers when it comes to

create linking social capital of the place.

A Standalone Sustainability Balanced Scorecard2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background and problem: Strong barriers to incorporating sustainability into the strategic plan exist according to CFO Research in 2008, and there is clear difficulty in valuating effects that sustainability has on the whole value. This makes it interesting and important to study these issues in this thesis.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze how organizations could incorporate sustainability perspectives into the strategic plan by constructing standalone sustainability balanced scorecard, and get an understanding of what kind of critical aspects that should be taken into consideration while adopting a separate sustainability balanced scorecard.

Method: To achieve the purpose the authors have chosen to use a qualitative method and carried out interviews at Hilton Tokyo. The information obtained from the respondent is relevant in this study.

Conclusions: The adaptation of a separate sustainability management system to include sustainability has resulted in the growing realization by large companies such as Hilton. Sustainability is not only a human ethical responsibility, but it is also beneficial to the bottom line of the company who fully commits to it, which has been proved very well in this research. This analysis has demonstrated several ways in which social and environmental sustainability can be incorporated with the organizational strategic plan. The empirical evidence gathered from Hilton Tokyo helps to demonstrate that sustainability in a separate system works well to integrate with the Balanced Scorecard and has become an integral part of a company’s identity. Lastly, several considerable critical aspects while adopting a separate sustainability balanced scorecard have been analyzed and demonstrated.

Studenternas psykosociala arbetsmiljö-Jämförelse i arbetsform2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: psykosocial arbetsmiljö, stress, skillnader i arbetsform, studenter

Optimizing warehouse transportation: A simulation study of racking and slotting configurations2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Warehouse efficiency has gained a lot of attention in the recent years where racking layout and slotting of the SKUs are essential. The efficiency can be measured in the total traveling distance that occur in the warehouse. Two of the most central racking layout and slotting policies are the fishbone layout and ABC class-based slotting. These policies offer many new advantages for the traveling distance compared to others.

    Objectives

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how a combination of a fishbone layout and ABC class-based slotting affects the total traveling distance relative to a traditional layout with random slotting. This will then be analyzed in order to investigate to what degree it can be implemented depending on the situation a company has.

    Methods

The study was carried out as a simulation study, simulating the forklift traveling distance between four different warehouse layout and slotting configurations. This simulation was done by gathering of information in the form of observations, interviews, measuring and data from the EDI system of the company. The simulation was made in excel and featured eight possible scenarios depending on different events which could occur in the warehouse. The data in the study were then analyzed through a one-way ANOVA test, Scheffe’s post hoc test and t-Tests.

    Results

The result of the study shows that the different events which can occur in the warehouse is affected by a change in layout and slotting configurations. With the implementation of new layout and slotting configurations it is also shown that the forklift traveling distance in the warehouse can be reduced. The result also shows that the isolation of the effects that the respective layout or slotting policies provides reduces the forklift traveling distance individually as well as a combination would do.

    Conclusions

The conclusion is that the Fishbone layout with ABC class-based slotting is the optimal solution considering the reduction in traveling distance in a warehouse. When considering the implementation process and the potential benefits with the configurations, a general company is recommended to consider what amount of resources they are willing to invest before they carry out the implementation.

    Delimitations

This paper is delimited to the total travelling distance that occur in a warehouse because of the time restriction. The study will not examine the intangible part of a warehouse which means that the WMS- system will not be addressed. The paper will not create an investment calculus for the proposed solution.

The Perceptions of Swedish Generation Z on Leadership Traits2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Generational cohort theory suggests that shared events and influences in people’s forming years shapegenerational values and common beliefs. Leadership traits theory focuses on trying to predict emergence, effectiveness and promotion of leaders by investigating traits (roughly personal qualities or characteristics) that those leaders, or leader candidates, display.

In the coming five years, the new generation Z is joining the workforce en masse. Aim of this thesis was to explore the perceptions of the Swedish generation Z on 10 different leadership traits, in comparison with older Swedish generations (Baby Boomers, generation X, generation Y). This is order to increase understanding of the leadership traits perceived to be important by generation Z, and thereby being able to make inferences about leadership aspects that need to be considered by line- or project manager when dealing with this new generation entering the workplace.

Based on a structured survey at Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, AkzoNobel, and Softhouse, we found much more similarities than differences on the perceptions held by the different generations. The overall scoring profile proved to be highly similar and indicative for a joint ‘Swedish’ perception on leadershiptraits, shared by white collar employees and students in technical, manufacturing and IT positions in Sweden. Humility and Trustworthiness were perceived as most important leadership traits, closely followed by Farsightedness, Interpersonal Skills and Integrity. On the other hand, Charisma was deemed to be least important, followed by Expertise. Of intermediate importance were found Decision Making, Determination and Enthusiasm.

Research linking generational cohort theory to perceptions on the workplace has received many critiques over the last years. Where some scholars, popular media, and consultancy companies alike tend to point out the (perceived) major differences between the generations, the majority of fact-based scientific research so far has pointed out that there are much more similarities than differences between generations when it comes to workplace perceptions. Even where differences are found, they are typically minor in size. The outcome of this thesis supports the observation that generational belonging is a too high level construct, and has poor predictive power regarding preferences on leadership aspects.

This study contributes to theory by, for the first time to the authors’ knowledge, combining generationcohort theory with leadership traits theory. Furthermore, it contributes to practice by increasing the insightinto the Swedish generation Z’s preference regarding leadership, helping managers and leaders to prepare for this new generation entering the workplace.

    Abstract [en]

This study is an empirical work about healthcare in the process of transformation. The speciic healthcare concerns foot and leg wound care within the homecare. The theoretical frame of the study relies on the Activity theory applied onto the healthcare workers involved into the wound care of the hard healing leg and foot ulcers. The transformation process involving this activity is seen as the example of the expansive learning and which is part of the activity theory. The method used is known, according to the Engeström (the leading figure within the currunt Activity research) as "etnography of trouble". The focus is on identifying conflicts which take place within the work activity. The purpose of the study was to increase understanding of how the wound care business is performed in home care in light of expansive learning theory. Results show the need for the wound care within the homecare to develop at the subject level as much as the system level. There are two specific developmental areas in concern, the tehnical-instrumental (development of digital assistance) and interaction-communication dmension (development of a new communication channel on vertical level). Both solutions liberate individuals competens. In the question of communication channel connected to the leadership this would create conditions for tehnical solutions to appear quicker.
