Chrominance Assisted Sharpening of Images2004Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a method to sharpen an image with less amplification of the noise than conventional methods. The proposed design method uses unsharp filtering for the sharpening part and differences in the chrominance data to decide if sharpening should be performed or not. The basic idea is to only do the sharpening if there are any changes in the chrominance information. Examples are included of sharpened images with less amplification of the noise.

Tight Bounds on the Minimum Euclidean Distance for Block Coded Phase Shift Keying1996Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We present upper and lower bounds on the minimum Euclidean distance $d_{Emin}(C)$ for block coded PSK. The upper bound is an analytic expression depending on the alphabet size $q$, the block length $n$ and the number of codewords $|C|$ of the code $C$. This bound is valid for all block codes with $q\geq4$ and with medium or high rate - codes where $|C|>(q/3)^n$. The lower bound is valid for Gray coded binary codes only. This bound is a function of $q$ and of the minimum Hamming distance $d_{Hmin}(B)$ of the corresponding binary code $B$. We apply the results on two main classes of block codes for PSK; Gray coded binary codes and multilevel codes. There are several known codes in both classes which satisfy the upper bound on $d_{Emin}(C)$ with equality. These codes are therefore best possible, given $q,n$ and $|C|$. We can deduce that the upper bound for many parameters $q,n$ and $|C|$ is optimal or near optimal. In the case of Gray coded binary codes, both bounds can be applied. It follows for many binary codes that the upper and the lower bounds on $d_{Emin}(C)$ coincide. Hence, for these codes $d_{Emin}(C)$ is maximal.

First Order Hidden Markov Model: Theory and Implementation Issues2005Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This report explains the theory of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). The emphasis is on the theory aspects in conjunction with the implementation issues that are encountered in a floating point processor. The main theory and implementation issues are based on the use of a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) as the state density in the HMM, and a Continuous Density Hidden Markov Model (CDHMM) is assumed. Suggestions and advice related to the implementation are given for a typical pattern recognition task.

The significance of Software Engineering Management in Software projects: A study on Project Management success factors, an ideal Project Manager and the current state of Project Management Education2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background. Management is an essential factor in any organization let alone its kind and size. Project management is the art and science of planning and implementing a project to achieve the desired outcome. Project Management (PM) plays a crucial role in businesses which are bound to function in a team-based environment regardless of the type of business. Although a variety of project management practices are employed in different kinds of industries, it is well understood that the style and level of employment of these project management practices have a significant impact on the project success. The software engineering industry has its own project management practices and the employment of these practices depends on the project manager who thus plays a key role in project management. Project manager has been a ubiquitous feature of traditional software projects. Project managers are a merger of personal characteristics and areas of competency that act together to integrate the various components of a project. In this study, the author discusses about the concept of software engineering management, various characteristics and key competencies of a project manager and also the factors influencing the overall success of a project. The authors also discuss about the current state and importance of PM education and its influence in the real time industry.

Objectives. This research study is to analyze and make conclusions about the ideal features of a project manager and therefore attempt to understand its association with critical factors of PM for a project’s success in terms of delivering the product as scheduled and also understand various non-PM factors that are critical for project success. The study also attempts to show the significance of studying PM specifically in the context of Software Engineering as different from other contexts and the importance of PM education in academics and teaching PM in the industry.

Methods. To achieve the objectives of this research, we attempt to study project management in the context of Software Engineering by conducting a literature review followed with a descriptive Survey as our research methods for this study to show how far literature complies to the present-day views and overall form a common opinion on this subject by comparing both the findings.

Results. The results yielded by conducting a literature review conclude that Project Management or Software Engineering Management plays a vital role in software projects. Various factors that contribute towards successful project management were identified. Also, relevant literature was reviewed to identify the characteristics and competencies of an effective project manager and the status of project management education in academics and in the software engineering industry. The results obtained from the literature review were used in designing a survey and were further used to compare with and validate the results of this survey. A thorough analysis of these results yielded in capturing the current status and views with a snapshot of the situation in the present Software Engineering industry. A clear view on the subject area and results from a sample population of 73 software engineering professionals consisting of up to 41 experienced managers were analyzed, commented and documented.

Conclusions. Various conclusions were drawn including discussions on the compliances and contradictions between present literature and software professionals in the present industry have been made. It was found that the majority of software professionals believe that project management in software engineering is unique from project management in other disciplines. It was found that professionals believe project management to be highly to very highly crucial for the overall success of software projects and that the most important key factors for successful project management were team motivation, communication and risk management. It was found that ‘Ability to foresee a problem’, ‘Decision making’ and ‘Inspires a shared vision’ were among the top three characteristics and ‘Team management’, ‘Leadership’ and ‘Ability to work under pressure’ were among the top three competencies of an effective project manager. It was found that managers feel the need to be taught about project management standards and that the ‘PMBoK’ and ‘ISO 9001’ were the most popular standards implemented. It was found that there are very contrasting views among companies on training project managers before promoting them to managerial positions whereas managers expect to be trained.

Blind Subband Adaptive Equalization2002Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

It is predicted that a large portion of future wireless communication capacity will be used to provide wireless data services. This new emphasis results in a significant change in substantial parts of the wireless infrastructure, it is important to have low bit error transmission links to get Quality of Service similar to the internet. Future services will also demand higher data rates. These factors mean that there will be a significant need for good quality equalization schemes in the receiver to reduce the different effects of the radio channels, such as intersymbol interference and multipath propagation. The use of linear equalizers leads to high numerical complexity filters even for short delay spread channels. High complexity equalizers implies slow convergence and high numerical load per processed symbol. To save the amount of training or pilot signals and thus increasing the useful data bits, a blind adaptation of the equalizer weights is commonly used. A blind adaptation algorithm in combination with a long equalizer result in even slower convergence. It is therefore desirable to improve the convergence properties of such equalizer schemes. A blind delayless subband equalizer structure is shown to improve the convergence properties of the equalizer. This equalizer consists of a combination of a fullband filtering and and a subband adaptation. In this paper a novel filter bank design and also improved subband-to fullband filter transformation methods is presented. By optimizing the filter bank design, and improving the subband-to-fullband transformation, considerable improvements have been achieved both when it comes to convergence speed and the level of equalization obtained. Simulation results show that the new subband equalization structure has a 12 times faster convergence than its fullband counterpart. The bit error rate is almost the same in both schemes. Thus, there are only advantages by using the suggested equalizer implementation compared to a conventional fullband implementation. The convergence improvement combined with computational savings make it a very attractive technique to use.

Digital Beamforming as a Means for Interference Cancellation1998Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The increasing demand for user capacity is a major challenge to network operators today. In order to increase the capacity of a mobile radio network, it is desirable to exploit the spatial domain in an efficient way. An array adds spatial domain selectivity in order to improve the Carrier-to-Interference ratio(C/I). An adaptive antenna array can further improve the Carrier-to-Interference ratio(C/I) by suppressing interfering signals. The proposed circular array consists of K elements and combines fixed beamformers with interference cancellers. The fixed beamformers use a weight matrix to form multiple beams. The interference canceller suppresses undesired signals, called jammers, leaking into the desired beam. The desired signal is filtered out by the fixed beamforming structure. Due to the side-lobes, interfering signals will also be present in this beam. Two alternative strategies may be chosen to cancel these interferers; use the other fixed beam outputs as inputs to an adaptive interference canceller, or regenerate the outputs from the other fixed beams and generate clean signals which are used as inputs to adaptive interference cancellers. Results are presented using beamformer weights obtained from a Least Square (LS) minimisation as well as minimax.

Robust Two-Dimensional FIR Filter Design for Broadband Beamformers1995Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

With conventional least squares or Chebyshev approximation methods in the design of a fixed, broadband, delay{and{sum beamformer, the filter weight values may become excessively large. This anomaly is due to large, unspecified regions of the corresponding two{dimensional FIR filter frequency plane. With large filter weight values, the frequency response of the resulting beamformer may be severely degraded due to inaccuracies in sensor positions and/or sensor frequency response. For an adaptive beamformer, such as the Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC), an anomalous design of the upper and lower branch may cause reduced jammer suppression, and target signal cancellation, respectively. A robust design of these branches is therefore vital. In this paper, robust design procedures for both the least squares, and the Chebyshev error design criterion, are given. The resulting beamformer frequency responses are robust with respect to model imperfections in sensor positions, amplitudes and phases. When a probabilistic model of the inaccuracies is given, the least squares and Chebyshev approximations can be made robust by modifying the corresponding inner product and max{norm, respectively, so that the effect of perturbations is taken into account. When no probabilistic model is given, the straightforward approach is to keep control both on the approximation error, and on the magnitudes of the beamformer weights simultaneously. A robust weighted Chebyshev design criterion is defined, where a small Chebyshev error is traded off against small beamformer weights in an optimal way.

Adaptive Microphone Array Employing Calibration Signals. An Analytical Evaluation1995Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This report evaluates an adaptive microphone array which facilitates a simple built-in calibration to the environment and instrumentation. The method has been suggested for use in hands-free mobile telephones for both speech enhancement and acoustic echo-cancellation as well as speech recognition. The scheme has several advantages such as a simple calibration procedure, directed jammer suppression, versatile robust beamforming and reduced target signal distortion. The analysis employs noncausal Wiener filters yielding compact and effective theoretical suppression limits.

Sub-band Acoustic Echo Cancellation1997Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Echo suppression is a vital part of every communications system. The use of handsfree communication in cars, computer applications and video conferencing have created further demands for high-quality acoustic echo cancellation. In these applications the acoustic channel has, typically, a long impulse response in the order of 100ms. Typical lengths of adaptive FIR-filters are 500-1500 taps, assuming a 12 kHz sampling frequency. In order to reduce the computational load and also to improve the convergence rate, subband processing schemes have been suggested. This paper presents a study of a delayless sub-band adaptive filter. The study shows a possible echo suppression of about 30 dB and also an improved convergence rate when compared to a fullband LMS-filter. The main issues discussed are filter bank design and a simple speech detector that gives a drastic performance improvement

Prövbarhet och relevans: Om minimikrav, optimumnormer och historieforskningens interna etiska kod1999Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Framework for Strategic SustainableDevelopment – FSSD).

On Track for 2030: Roadmap for a fast transition to sustainable personal transport: English short version with foreword by Peter Newman2018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The transport sector's dependence on fossil fuels is one of the biggest challenges in a shift towards a climate-neutral and sustainable society.

This roadmap report aims to investigate how electric vehicle systems can contribute to a faster transition to sustainable passenger transport in Southeast Sweden, as well as to present a methodology for guidance of similar work for faster transitions in other regions and sectors.

This work has been guided by a scientifically designed and proven Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). Specifically, answers are given to four research questions structured in relation to the four subsystems 'Politics and instruments', 'Users and markets', 'Vehicles and infrastructure' and 'Energy and materials':

    1. What could a sustainable vision for passenger transport in Southeast Sweden look like?
    2. What could be a milestone goal for 2030?
    3. What is the current reality in relation to the 2030 goal and the vision?
    4. How could the gap between the present, 2030 and the vision be bridged?

The report's results show that today's focus on fossil independence and measures against climate change must be broadened to cover the whole sustainability challengeso that other sustainability issues are addressed and so that solutions to some of the sustainability issues do not create new ones.

The report also clarifies that it is necessary, practically possible and economically advantageous for Southeast Sweden to make a faster sustainability transition of passenger transportthan what has been proposed in previous studies and investigations. It is also likely that the same applies to the entire transport system and for the whole of Sweden and the world.

Even geopolitical benefits are likely. A global transition to transport and energy systems based on energy from widely available flow resources like sun and wind instead of the limited fossil fuels would likely reduce the conflicts risks in the world.Restricted cobalt, lithium and platinum resources that battery and fuel cell cars depend on, and other metals needed for solar cells and wind turbines can, however, give rise to similar conflict risks. This roadmap report's recommendations on reduced transport needs and car dependency and its focus on resource efficiency counteract these conflict risks by striking against underlying resource-driving mechanisms. Should this roadmap be translated into practical policies, the forthcoming transition would therefore likely be made considerably more 'future-proof'.

Scenarier för Blekinge 2050: En rapport inom projektet Strukturbild Blekinge 2.02019Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

Framework for Strategic SustainableDevelopment – FSSD).

Storytelling i reklamfilm utifrån ett genusperspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract In our work, among other things, we have worked with the concept of corporate storytelling. Corporate storytelling involves the use of stories, for example, marketing. Storytelling can for example be used to strengthen the brand and to advertise a single product or service, for example through commercials. We have been through a gender analysis and examined how women and men are portrayed in the commercial that includes storytelling. We have used commercials from the Guldäggets winner in 2008 and 2016, from the category "Film". This is to compare how it looked then and how it looks today. We have chosen to examine Guldäggets winner because it is the largest competition in the industry. We have also analysed the story of rekamfilmerna in the form of its own large corporate storytelling analysis based on past and current research on narrative techniques. We have over 13 weeks had an internship at an advertising agency in Malmo. There we participated in productions and studied the work. During practice we, among other things, took notes on how to plan a commercial production. This experience we have then applied in our discussion and in our interpretation. The design consists of a commercial that is an example of how we think the commercials should look like, viewed from a gender perspective. It is also a way to apply, for us, a new perspective in a production. In our gender analysis of advertising films portrayed men and women in a more similar way today in 2016 than they did in 2008.

Utility Aspects on Strategic IT-Integration Issues1996Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The traditional industrial society is currently in a rapid transition towards a society where information and knowledge are prime assets. Information technology is the main enabler for this social change. However, in addition to an enabler, information technologv also is an integrator. Traditionally, the different producers of products, utilities and services had their own infrastructure towards the consumer. In the future, the leve1 of interaction between the provider and customer Will be so advanced, that no single producer, especially not the utility provider, can afford to construct the required infrastructure independently. Alternatively, multiple interested parties need to jointly develop a shared infrastructure that fulfils the combined requirements. Utility providers, operating in an increasingly global and dynamic market, can earn a competitive advantage by pro-actively experiment and install an inzastructure to provide additional functionality to the tustomer. Other-wise, the advantages of decreased production cost and increased customer satisfaction Will be exploited by competitors. This paper discusses the efforts of EnerSearch, a subsidiary of Sydkraft and IBM, in exploiting information technologv in two major projects. The Integrated Distribution Automation & Management (IDAM) project aims at improving the management of the utility information needs, whereas the Information, Society, Energy, System (ISES) project is more general, with the intention to provide a platform for implementing and assessing new services, products and trading. The knowledge obtained in these ongoing projects already proves to be highly valuable for determining fiture strategies in the utility market, the development of new products and services and the identification of appropriate co-operations with providers in other domains.

Can addressing asymmetrical information gaps be an approach towards sustainable public procurement: A qualitative case study of Swedish public procurements2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Asymmetrical information gaps perceived by procurers creates barriers when introducing sustainability in public procurement. The prerequisite for addressing these have therefore been studied. The asymmetrical information gap perceived by the procurer has been studied from the perspective of contract theory, since procurements can be regarded as a contract between two parties. To study this, five functional-oriented public procurements with different sustainability demands and needs have been studied. The approach of the study has been of qualitative nature and was conducted through interviews. The interviews revealed that the use of dialogues was perceived as a good way of reducing the asymmetrical information gap. However, it was experienced as time consuming. The use of incentives proved to be a more situational solution, it cannot solely reduce the information asymmetric gap perceived by the procurer. It also emerged that the dialogue process could be regarded as a form of market incentive. Hence, the need for a more time-efficient approach for the dialogue processes when using functional oriented public procurements. Such a model has been compiled based on the information from the interviews. The purpose of the model is to increase the prerequisites for sustainability in public procurement by addressing the asymmetrical information perceived by the procurer.

Hur skapas välstånd i stagnation?: Vilka tillvägagångssätt förespråkar kommunerna i översiktsplaneringen?2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vibration Analysis of a Boring Bar2002Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In boring operations the vibrations are a cumbersome part of the manufacturing process. This report puts the vibrations under scrutiny and the vibrations were measured both in the cutting speed direction and the cutting depth direction. The cutting process seems to be a time varying process and contains nonstationary as well as nonlinear parameters that are not under control. The experiments showed that the vibrations were usually dominated by the first resonance frequency in either of the two directions of the boring bar. Sample probability density estimates of the vibration records points to that the probability densities are varying from sinusiodal probability shape to gaussian shape. They also indicate that shape of the two directions could be of different probability density function from the same vibration record. Stationarity tests show, besides that the processes usually are nonstationary, that it is possible to extract short time stationary segments within a vibration record. The problem with force modulation in rotary machinery, which appears as side band terms is the spectrum, is also addressed. Furthermore, the resonance frequencies of the boring bar are correlated to an approximate theoretical beam model. The theoretical calculation of the boring bar deflection corresponds well with the experimental results from the modal analysis and the operating deflection shape analysis.

Some Results on Optimal Decisions in Network Oriented Load Control in Signaling Networks1996Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Congestion control in the signaling system number 7 is a necessity to fulfil the requirements of a telecommunication network that satisfy customers’ requirements on quality of service. Heavy network load is an important source of customer dissatisfaction as congested networks result in deteriorated quality of service. With the introduction of a Congestion Control Mechanism (CCM), that annihilates service sessions with a predicted completion time greater than the maximum allowed completion time for the session, network performance improves dramatically. Annihilation of already delayed sessions let other sessions benefit and increase the useful overall network throughput. This report discuss the importance of customer satisfaction and the relation between congestion in signaling networks and customer dissatisfaction. The advantage of using network profit as a network performance metric is also addressed in this report. Network profit and network costs are given a stringent definition with respect to customer satisfaction. An expression of the marginal cost for accepting or annihilating sessions is also given. Finally, the CCM is refined using a decision theoretic approach that bases the decision of annihilation on the average profit attached to each of the two possible actions, i.e. annihilate the session or not. The decision theoretic approach use a load dependent probability distribution for the completion time. The results in this report indicate that the decision theoretic approach to the CCM (DCCM) is robust and can handle very high overloads, both transient and focused, keeping the network profit on a high level.

Inside Information 2 − Usability and User Research: Eight years of research and method development cooperation2009Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This report is a follow up to the Inside Information – Usability and User Research at UIQ Technology report that was made available in October 2006. The initial report was written from an industrial point of view aimed to market UIQ Technology through the demonstration of the UIQ usability and user research philosophy. UIQ Technology Usability Metrics (UTUM) was important result here. UTUM was considered an extremely cost-effective method for keeping in focus what is important for users and handset makers. It was a tool for guiding development decisions as well as for validating the worthiness of design concepts. The two parts in UTUM was perceived by the company as an innovation in their software development practice. The first part was the relationship to users and attitude to their participation in the design process. The second part was how the company immediately and directly incorporated this usability understanding into the software development process. UTUM, together with other usability methods and results presented in this report, have been produced in an action research manner. Due to the closure of the company, the main author of the 2006 report, and the same researchers who also supported the writing of the initial report, decided to produce a follow-up and closure version of the initial report; as a way to summarize the results from the academic and industrial cooperation. In this updated version, eight years of joint action research and cooperative method development surrounding usability and user research is concluded.

Mobile Phone Antenna Design2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on mobile phones antenna design with brief description about the historical development, basic parameters and the types of antennas which are used in mobile phones. Mobile phones antenna design section consists of two proposed PIFA antennas. The first design concerns a single band antenna with resonant frequency at GPS frequency (1.575GHz). The first model is designed with main consideration that is to have the lower possible PIFA single band dimensions with reasonable return loss (S11) and the efficiencies. Second design concerns in a wideband PIFA antenna which cover the range from 1800MHz to 2600MHz. This range covers certain important bands: GSM (1800MHz & 1900MHz), UMTS (2100MHz), Bluetooth & Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and LTE system (2.3GHz, 2.5GHz, and 2.6GHz). The wideband PIFA design is achieved by using slotted ground plane technique. The simulations for both models are performed in COMSOL Multiphysics.

The last two parts of the thesis present the problems of mobile phones antenna. Starting with Specific absorption rate (SAR) problem, efficiency of Mobile phones antenna, and hand-held environment.

On the Gains and Losses of Speculation in Equilibrium Markets1997Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In computational markets utilizing algorithms that establish a market equilibrium (general equilibrium), competitive behavior is usually assumed: each agent makes its demand (supply) decisions so as to maximize its utility (profit) assuming that it has no impact on market prices. However, there is a potential gain from strategic behavior (via speculating about others) because an agent does affect the market prices, which affect the supply/demand decisions of others, which again affect the market prices that the agent faces. This paper presents a method for computing the maximal advantage of speculative behavior in equilibrium markets. Our analysis is valid for a wide variety of known market protocols. We also construct demand revelation strategies that guarantee that an agent can drive the market to an equilibrium where the agent's maximal advantage from speculation materializes. Our study of a particular market shows that as the number of agents increases, gains from speculation decrease - often turning negligible already at moderate numbers of agents. The study also shows that under uncertainty regarding others, competitive acting is often close to optimal, while speculation can make the agent significantly worse off - even if the agent's beliefs are just slightly biased. Finally, protocol dependent game theoretic issues related to multiple agents counterspeculating are discussed.

Systematically Irrational Decision Making: An Evaluation of Decision Making Competence of Technical Experts and Decision Makers at Scania R&D2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this exploratory thesis is to gain insights into the individual decision making competence levels for the decision makers and solution designers at production level at Scania Research and Development. And develop a simple framework for counteracting the negative influences of the cognitive biases and heuristics on the decision making process.

Design/methodology/approach – We used survey methodology to measure the competence in avoiding cognitive biases and heuristics. The survey is based on the Adult Decision Making Competency Survey (A-DMC) (Bruine de Bruin, et al., 2007). The survey measured the performance of the participants from Scania R&D on the analytic competences (Applying Decision Rules, Resistance to framing and Consistency in Risk Perception) and the heuristic decision making competences (Under/Overconfidence, Resistance to Sunk Costs and Recognizing Social Norms). The scores on the A-DMC not only reflect the performance on the measured component task but can be interpreted as indicator of normative decision-making competence in resisting the cognitive biases and heuristics. The survey has 135 question and received responses from total 55 participants from.

Findings – The research shows that the individual decision making competence scores of solution designers and decision makers shows no significant difference. On the other hand, age seems to clearly have a correlation with the analytic (negative) and heuristic (positive) decision making competence. We have also looked into the correlation between the A-DMC scores and Age/Experience of the survey respondents.

Research Implications – The research findings contribute to understanding of the relationship between the role, experience and age to the individual decision making competence using the A-DMC battery of questions.

Practical implications – All is not lost in the battle against the systematic irrationality and departure from the normative models of decision making. It is possible to counter act the negative influences of cognitive biases and heuristics on decision-making by spreading awareness and using simple frameworks. Companies can effectively prepare their staff by targeted trainings for decision making competence weaknesses in different age groups.

Keywords – individual decision making competence, cognitive biases, heuristics, product development projects, counter acting biases.

Modeling of an Active Boring Bar2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Vibration problems occurring during internal turning operations in the manufacturing industry urge for adequate passive and/or active control techniques in order to increase the productivity of machine tools. Usually, passive solutions are based on either boring bars made partly in high Young's modulus non-ductile materials such as intered tungsten carbide or boring bars with tuned vibration absorbers adjusted to increase the dynamic stiffness in the frequency range of a certain resonance frequency of the boring bar. By utilizing an active boring bar with an embedded piezoceramic actuator and a suitable controller, the primary boring bar vibrations originating from the material deformation process may be suppressed with actuator-induced secondary "anti-" vibrations. In order to design an active boring bar, several issues have to be addressed, i.e., selecting the characteristics of the actuator, the actuator size, the position of the actuator in the boring bar, etc. This usually implies the manufacturing and testing of several prototypes of an active boring bar, and this is a time-consuming and costly procedure. Therefore, mathematical models of active boring bars incorporating the piezo-electric effect that enable the accurate prediction of their dynamic properties and responses are of great importance. This report addresses the development of a "3-D" finite element model of the system "boring bar-actuator-clamping house". The spatial dynamic properties of the active boring bar, i.e., its natural frequencies and mode shapes, as well as the transfer function between actuator voltage and boring bar acceleration are calculated based on the "3-D" FE model and compared to the corresponding experimentally obtained estimates. Two types of approximations of the Coulomb friction force, the arctangent and the bilinear models, are evaluated concerning modeling contact between the surface of the boring bar and the clamping house.

Calculation Method and Tool to Visualize Cable Harness Usage in Trucks2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Cable harness is an integral part of a modern-day automobile. The design of many mechanical components is based on the cable harness and hence it is important to accurately calculate the space occupied by cable harness. In this thesis, a theoretical model representing n arbitrarily sized cables was used to generate a packing of the cable harness, and the space occupied by them was calculated. The model was used to develop an algorithm that generated a feasible configuration and a container around that packing. The optimisation toolbox in MATLAB was also used to calculate the space and optimise the container size. A customised standalone tool was developed in MATLAB by utilising the established methods, that enables calculation of space occupied by cables at various points of interest along the truck chassis for Scania CV.

Customisation of Unified Modeling Language for Logical Database Modeling2002Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The notion of stereotype was introduced in Unified Modelling Language as a mean enabling extension and customisation of the language. But stereotypes can also be included into an UML based software development process to improve its quality. The paper recalls a description of what is a stereotype in UML and how it is defined, what role it is intended play and how it can be specified i.e. introduced into use. Based on this a classification of the uses of the notion is presented followed by practical suggestions how concrete stereotypes can be introduced into development process ? starting from informal description, through formal specification and ending with customisation of a tool for the usage of the stereotype. An integration of the solution with the existing, complementary profile dedicated for the tool used is also presented.

Software Product Lines from Customer to Code2000Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The process of establishing a software product line and instantiating products from it is motivated, not only by technical reasons, but also by business reasons. The customer perspective reveals the importance of the basic function of the products and helps us distinguish between product lines and product families. One single feature is never the only difference between two products, but instead we can identify products on different feature levels. When designing the product we identify that it is important to separate between conceptual components of the domain and factual components that are part of the solution. Product lines must eventually lead to implementation and source code. In order to achieve this, a wide range of implementation techniques is available. Which combination of tech-niques that is the most appropriate is very much dependent on if the product is part of a product line or a product family, and how the factual component relate to the other factual components. Hence, to be successful in developing software product lines requires the application of knowledge about both the customer and the code.

A Study of Evolution Impact in Software Product Lines2000Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Product-line architectures, i.e. a software architecture and component set shared by a family of products, represents a promising approach to achieving reuse of software. Several companies are initiating or have recently adopted a product-line architecture. However, little experience is available with respect to the evolution of the products, the software components and the software architecture. Due to the higher level of interdependency between the various software assets, software evolution is a more complex process. In this paper, we discuss the results of two case studies concentrating on the evolution of software assets in two swedish organizations that have employed the product-line architecture approach for several years. Based on these two cases, we discuss the commonalities, presented as categorizations of the evolution of the requirements, the software architecture and the software components, and also the differences between the two cases.

On the Notion of Variability in Software Product Lines2001Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Software product lines are used in companies to provide a set of reusable assets for related groups of software products. Generally a software product line provides a common architecture and reusable code for software product developers. In this article we focus on mechanisms that help developers vary the architecture and behavior of a software product line to create individual products. We provide the reader with a framework of terminology and concepts that help understand the concept of variability better. In addition, we present a number of variability mechanisms in the context of this framework. Finally, we provide a method for incorporating variability into software product lines.

Implementation Aspects of the Adaptive Gain Equalizer2006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The quality of speech, or important speech parameters such as the intelligibility, clearness or naturalness of speech, can be emphasized by signal processing. Such processing for improving speech quality can be found in telecommunication applications, e.g. mobile telephony, internet telephony or personal intercom. Blind methods are preferable over conventional because they do not require calibration schemes and are independent of environmental variations. By careful selection of hardware domain for realization, i.e. digital, analog, or hybrid, implementation-specific benefits can be utilized to increase the speech quality or performance. This report stresses some implementation aspects when implementing a blind method for speech enhancement in digital, analog, and hybrid digital-analog hardware.

Attempting to diffract in-game factions: An analysis of the lack of innovation regarding conflict-driven coalitions.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor thesis reviews the concept of non-innovative faction groups in digital games and the cause and effect of such systems. The paper goes into detail on what diffractions are available to developers when creating a faction driven game. It also illuminates the need to be aware of consequences of small details in a big picture. It will outline what types of faction systems in games that can be argued to be outdated and repeated, and why such a thing can prove detrimental to the development of future games and to developers. The necessity of these design choices of factions will be outlined through design fundamentals regarding games, as well as through research of strategy games and how they employ factions through their semi-historical inspiration sources. The functionality of those design choices will be considered through heuristic evaluation and then determined what key components are necessary to the overall gameplay of such games. Gamemaker will also be discussed as a means of creating these systems in games and the limitations and opportunities presented by using that programming software.

Behind Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler: Narrowband Volume Backscattering Signal Model, Analysis and Estimation1999Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This report examines the statistical properties of the narrowband Doppler volume backscattering process and discusses its spectral centroid estimation problem. After clarifying the mechanism of both the finite duration Doppler effect and the continuously space-shifted integration process, the first two order time-varying statistics under a more general assumption, i.e. von Mises distribution, of random phase are derived. The generalization permits nonuniform phase tendency, which occurs in layered medium scattering. Based on the locally stationary process model, the evolutionary spectrum of the signal is derived where the variation of the backscattering strength enters as an amplitude modulation. On the contrary, the variation of the random phase distribution acts as both the amplitude modulation and the frequency modulation. The observability and the estimation of the average flow speed are discussed. It is shown that even under the homogeneous condition, the spectral centroid does not coincide with the aver age flow speed. Finally, a semiparametric spectral centroid estimation method, which simply contains an AR(2) model with its time-varying coefficients adapted by a wavelet shrinkage is proposed.

Modulation spaces and pseudo-differential operators2002Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We discuss certain continuity properties for modulation spaces, and prove certain convolution relations. The results are then applied to get inclusions between modulation spaces, Besov spaces and Schatten classes in calculus of pseudo-differential operators, and to extend the definition of Toeplitz operators. We also discuss continuity of ambiguity functions and pseudo-differential operators in the framework of modulation spaces.

Modulation spaces of non-standard type and pseudo-differential operators2003Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We prove that the most usual modulation spaces of non-standard type may be obtained in a canonical way from the corresponding modulation spaces of standard type. We use the results to get inclusions between certain modulation spaces and Besov spaces, and for proving continuity properties in pseudo-differential calculus.

Subalgebras to a Wiener type algebra of Pseudo-differential operators2000Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We study general continuous properties for an increasing family of Banach spaces of classes for pseudo-differential symbols, where the largest symbol space was introduced by J. Sjöstrand 1993. We prove that corresponding pseudo-differential operators are contained in the some certain sets of Schatten-von Neumann operators. We prove also that one obtains Hölder relations from the operator product and the usual multiplication, and that the convolution multiplication give rise to some Young type relations. Some further extensions are also discussed

How Planners and Small Business entrepreneurs View Industrial Environments: The need and possibility for a planning dialogue1997Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A picture sorting study with small groups of urban planners and small business entrepreneurs was carried out in order to explore the conceptualization of industrial environments. The participants were asked to sort and characterize 20 photographs of industrial buildings, selected to illustrate a broad range with regard to age, size, standard, exterior design and possible use. Multidimensional scaling analysis and other statistical techniques revealed significant differences between the two groups, where primarily the use of branch classifications discriminated between them. In contrast, consensus analysis of the sortings as such showed no significant differences, indicating the possibility of a dialogue. The results are interpreted and discussed in the context of communicative planning theory and potential conflicts in the industrial property market between owners and occupiers.

    Abstract [sv]

Utveckling av spelmekaniker: Analogt och Digitalt2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this Bachelor Thesis we have researched different ways of creating new game mechanics through the use of analogue and digital techniques in collaboration with each other. By working with these techniques as our main focus, we have been able to develop a physical, three dimensional puzzle game which shows off the combination of techniques that can be used to further develop new game experiences. Some of the Methods that have been used to complete the project have been method 635 for generation of puzzle ideas, Scrum for better work ethics as well as MDA framework to create an understanding for the player. The results show modules that implement both digital and analogue techniques that work in combination with each other to create new unique game mechanics. The most difficult during this Bachelor Thesis have been finding the balance between the analogue and the digital during the designing of the puzzles.

    Abstract [en]

Biträdande programchef: docent Tuija Hilding-Rydevik, MKB-Centrum SLU.
