    Abstract [en]

    Autonomous Driving and Advance Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are revolutionizing the way we drive and the future of mobility. Among ADAS, Traffic Sign Classification is an important technique which assists the driver to easily interpret traffic signs on the road. In this thesis, we used the powerful combination of Image Processing and Deep Learning to pre-process and classify the traffic signs. Recent studies in Deep Learning show us how good a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is for image classification and there are several state-of-the-art models with classification accuracies over 99 % existing out there. This shaped our thesis to focus more on tackling the current challenges and some open-research cases. We focussed more on performance tuning by modifying the existing architectures with a trade-off between computations and accuracies. Our research areas include enhancement in low light/noisy conditions by adding Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) connections, and contribution to a universal-regional dataset with Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The results obtained on the test data are comparable to the state-of-the-art models and we reached accuracies above 98% after performance evaluation in different frameworks

    HUMAN ACTIVITY MONITORING USING SMARTPHONE2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

    The main aim of the project is to develop an algorithm which will classify the activity performed by a human who is carrying a smart phone. The day to day life made humans very busy at work and during daily activities, mostly elderly people who are at home have an important need to monitor their activity by others when they are alone, if they are inactive for a long time without movement, or in some situations like if they have fallen down, became unconscious for sometime or seized with a cardiac arrest etc… will help the observer to know the state of activity of person being monitored. In this project we develop an algorithm to know the activity of a person using accelerometer available in Smartphone. We have extracted the Smartphone accelerometer data using an application called accelerometer data logger version 1.0 available in Smartphone market and have processed the data in Matlab for classifying the different activities of human being into static and dynamic activity, if the activity is dynamic then further classification into walking or running is performed with the algorithm. We implemented smoothening filters for data analysis and statistical techniques like standard deviation, mean and signal magnitude analysis for activity classification. This classification algorithm will let us know the type of activity either static or dynamic and then classify the position of the user, such as walking, running or ideal, which can provide useful information for the observer who is monitoring the activities of wearer, and which will help the wearer for his daily living. To bring out the extensive use of algorithm and to provide valuable feedback for wearer regarding his activities, energy spent by user during the activities was calculated at a given time using regression methods and was implemented in the algorithm. The developed model was able to estimate the energy spent by the user, the observations recorded were almost similar to the treadmill data which is taken as a standard for our model and the mean error is not more than ±2 for 30 observations. The final results when compared with the standard model was proved to be 93 % accurate on average of 30 subjects data which is used for verifying the algorithm developed. With these set of results we have come to a conclusion that algorithm can be easily implemented in a real time Smartphone application with low false predictions and can be implemented with low computational cost and fast real-time response. In future our classification algorithm can also be used in military applications where one can know what the soldier is doing without actually seeing him and additionally it can be proved as a support system in athlete’s health monitoring and training.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents results on behavior modeling of a general purpose metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) for simulation of power electronics systems requiring accuracy both in steady state and in switching conditions. Methods of parameters extraction, including nonlinearity of parasitic capacitances and steady-state characteristics, are based on manufacturer datasheet and externally measurable characteristics. The MOSFET template is written in the MAST language and simulated in the SABER simulator. Experimental validation of the N-channel power MOSFET-type IRFP240 (Fairchild Semiconductor) rated at 20 A/200 V is performed in a dc/dc boost converter. The main features of the developed model have been compared with the properties of an analytical MOSFET model and a general MOSFET model embedded to a SABER simulator.

    The goal of the following thesis is to transfer radar basic theory in a practical work using Texas Instrument’s mmWave radar series. The range of practical applications for FMCW radars has increased, for example in automotive sector.

    Understanding the basics of radar mathematics in a simplified way, as well as the transfer from theory to practical work is important for any engineer working on radar projects. Even if the theory is known, the way from a theory to a running system can be hard, facing several problems, because the reality is limited. In two experiments, data from the radar is collected while cars are crossing the observation area of the radar.The data is then used to count the number of vehicles passing the observation area and to estimate the movement of the objects in the field of view.

    Abstract [en]

    Nowadays steganographic techniques are with us and in everywhere because we are using information more and more and we need to have or transform the information as secure as possible. In these techniques we need to secure the information by encrypting (coding) and decrypting (decoding). In this thesis we propose a different coding procedure based on recursive methodology. We used image as medium for this steganographic technique. An image is splitted (coded) and merged (decoded) by recursive procedure. Our experiments show that the technique is applicable for both Gray Scale and Color images and also no need of providing a key security facility at the decoder end.

    In wireless networks, due to limited bandwidth and packet losses, seamless and ubiquitous delivery of high-quality video streaming services is a big challenge for the operators. In order to improve the process of online video quality monitoring, the presence of no reference (NR) objective video quality assessment (VQA) methods is required. In some networks, the video decoder on the reception side adopts a mechanism in which last correctly received frame is frozen and displayed on video display terminal until the next correct frame is received. This phenomenon, employed as an error concealment technique, can cause a perceptual jerkiness on the video display terminal. In this paper, we have proposed an enhanced model of objective VQA based on the estimation of jerkiness. A study of three contemporary NR methods, used for objective VQA and online monitoring of videos, has been included along with subjective VQA tests. The subjective tests were performed for a set of video sequences with specific spatial and temporal information. The proposed NR method is based on our careful observations from the subjective test results and our main focus is to cater the effect of multiple frame freeze impairments in video steaming. Comparison with other NR methods shows that the proposed method performs better, in terms of estimating the impact of multiple frame freezing impairments, and has more affinity with the subjective test results.

    Now a days, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras are installedeverywhere in public places to monitor illegal activities like armedrobberies. Mostly CCTV footages are used as post evidence after theoccurrence of crime. In many cases a person might be monitoringthe scene from CCTV but the attention can easily drift on prolongedobservation. Eciency of CCTV surveillance can be improved by in-corporation of image processing and object detection algorithms intomonitoring process.The object detection algorithms, previously implemented in CCTVvideo analysis detect pedestrians, animals and vehicles. These algo-rithms can be extended further to detect a person holding weaponslike rearms or sharp objects like knives in public or restricted places.In this work the detection of weapon from CCTV frame is acquiredby using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) as feature vector andarticial neural networks performing back-propagation algorithm forclassication.As a weapon in the hands of a human is considered to be greaterthreat as compared to a weapon alone, in this work the detection ofhuman in an image prior to a weapon detection has been found advan-tageous. Weapon detection has been performed using three methods.In the rst method, the weapon in the image is detected directly with-out human detection. Second and third methods use HOG and back-ground subtraction methods for detection of human prior to detectionof a weapon. A knife and a gun are considered as weapons of inter-est in this work. The performance of the proposed detection methodswas analysed on test image dataset containing knives, guns and im-ages without weapon. The accuracy rate 84:6% has been achievedby a single-class classier for knife detection. A gun and a knife havebeen detected by the three-class classier with an accuracy rate 83:0%.

    Predictive detection of epileptic seizures in EEG for reactive care2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    It is estimated that 65 million people worldwide have epilepsy, and many of them have uncontrollable seizures even with the use of medication. A seizure occurs when the normal electrical activity of the brain is interrupted by sudden and unusually intense bursts of electrical energy, and these bursts can be observed and detected by the use of an electroencephalograph (EEG) machine. This work presents an algorithm that monitors subtle changes in scalp EEG characteristics to predict seizures. The algorithm is built to calibrate itself to every specifc patient based on recorded data, and is computationally effcient enough for future on-line applications. The presented algorithm performs ICA-based artifact filtering and Lasso-based feature selection from a large array of statistical features. Classification is based on a neural network using Bayesian regularized backpropagation.The selected method was able to classify 4 second long preictal segments with an average sensitivity of 99.53% and an average specificity of 99.9% when tested on 15 different patients from the CHB-MIT database.

    3D Object Reconstruction Using XBOX Kinect V2.02016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Three dimensional image processing and analysis, particularly, the imaging and reconstruction of an environment in three dimensions  has received significant attention, interest and concern  during the recent years. In the light of this background, this research study intends to provide an efficient way to reconstruct an irregular surfaced object, for example "the sole of a shoe", with good precision at a low cost using XBOX Kinect V2.0 sensor. Three dimensional reconstruction can be achieved either by using active or passive methods. Active methods make use of light source such as lasers or infra-red emitters for scanning a given environment and measuring the depth, to create a depth map. In contrast, in passive methods, colour images of the environment in different perspectives are used to create a three dimensional model of the environment. In this study, an active method using a set of depth maps of the object of interest is implemented, where the object of interest is represented by a sole of a shoe. Firstly, a set of depth maps of the object of interest are acquired in different perspectives. The acquired depth maps are first pre-processed for removing any outliers in the data acquired and are then enhanced. Enhanced depth maps are converted into 3D point clouds using the intrinsic parameters of the Kinect sensor. These obtained point clouds are subsequently registered into a single position using the Iterative Closest Point(ICP) algorithm. Aligned point clouds of the object of interest are then merged to form a single dense point cloud of the object of interest. Analysis of the generated single dense point cloud has shown that accurate 3D reconstruction of the real object of the interest has been achieved.

    Abstract [en]

    SAR systems synthesizing circular apertures have been shown to result in better spatial resolutions than the ones synthesizing linear apertures. The paper presents an investigation about the enhancement of SAR spatial resolutions with the use of circular aperture. A comparison between the spatial resolutions obtained with a SAR system synthesizing a circular aperture and with the same SAR system synthesizing a linear aperture is therefore carried out. The studying results are verified by the experimental SAR data set provided by the experimental ground-based SAR system of Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH GB-SAR).

    Abstract [en]

    This paper reports the measurement campaign Blekingetraffic that was performed by Blekinge Institute of Technology with collaboration with the partners. The measurements are part of a case study to evaluate the feasibility of spaceborne SAR for measuring traffic flow change before and after toll charge introduced in Sweden. The radar measurements were conducted around Pukavik, western of Karlshamn, Sweden in the end of 2015 and in the beginning of 2016. In this paper, the results of one of the controlled measurements performed in the first week of February 2016 is presented. In the ground scene, some trucks tracked with GPS were deployed in European route E22 and local roads. The trucks have either cabinets or food tankers resulting in different radar cross sections. The data acquisition is with TanDEM-X using two satellites giving up to 6 data channels. Since the measurements were performed at 5:00 pm there were unknown traffic i.e. trucks and cars that were not controlled. Therefore, the traffic on the roads was recorded by cameras next to the road and on a drone. The initial analysis of the measured data shows the possibilities to apply available processing techniques such as ground moving target indication and change detection to obtain the knowledge of traffic flow change. © 2017 IEEE.

    There are around 10,426 bird species around the world. Recognizing the bird species for an untrained person is almost impossible either

    by watching or listening them. In order to identify the bird species

    from their sounds, there is a need for an application that can detect

    the bird species from its sound. Time-frequency domain analysis techniques are used to implement the application. We implemented two

    time-frequency domain feature extraction methods.

    In feature extraction, a signature matrix which consist of extracted

    features is created for bird sound signals. A database of signature matrix is created with bird chirps extracted features. We implemented

    two feature classification methods. They are auto-correlation feature classification method and reference difference feature classification method. An unknown bird chirp is compared with the database

    to detect the species name. The main aim of the research is to implement the time-frequency domain feature extraction method, create a

    signature matrix database, implement two feature classification methods and compare them.

    At last, bird species were identified in the research and the auto-correlation classification method detects the bird species better than

    the reference difference classification method.

    Abstract [en]

    Fingerprint recognition systems are one of the oldest biometric recognition systems, which are under constant development. Presence of noise in fingerprint severely affects performance of recognition systems. Fingerprint segmentation is one of the important part in recognition systems; they eliminate noisy background in the image improving performance of fingerprint recognition systems.

    This thesis focuses on proposing a new algorithm for segmentation of fingerprint images using data clustering technique known as spectral clustering. The algorithm is based on block wise segmentation of fingerprint images. The criteria considered for segregating blocks into foreground and background are variance and double gradient of the image. The data in the blocks is clustered using spectral clustering technique.

    Performance of the developed algorithm is evaluated using FVC2000, FVC2002, FVC2004 databases. Two sub-databases from each database are selected and relative sizes of the masks are compared to the hand annotated masks of the respective databases. From results, it is observed that double gradient is slightly better than variance in using as parameter for performing fingerprint segmentation

    Abstract [en]

    Footwear impression is a common phenomenon in crime investigation cas-es. It is frequently found where the crime is committed. To identify this impression manually is quite difficult and time consuming. Due to the var-ious qualities, inconsistency of the impressions and variety of footwear outsole designs, make it impossible to identify foot print impressions man-ually in certain cases. The purpose of this thesis was to implement a model for identification the impression from a known set of outsole prints. If the impression is not in data set, the implemented model can determine simi-larity between the crime scene impressions with the suspect’s shoeprint impressions. Forensic experts can investigate the sources of impression as well as the suspects which can help the prosecution. Different algorithms are investigated during the implementation of the model. An automatic image processing method to improve the quality of a query image as well as reference images has been studied. To evaluate the similarity between the known footwear impression and unknown one several features have been extracted from the images. The extracted features are limited to such geometrical shapes as lines and circles. The similarity between extracted features is evaluated using bin-by-bin distance and cross-bin distance using histograms named Features Distance Calculation (FDC). The implemented model compares the features with pre-computed features of database.

    Abstract [en]

    This project aims to use temporal and spatial data analysis to express the measured air pollutant concentrations as well as their relation with the aerosol traces, indicated by the intensity ratio (IR). The surveying were performed during a field campaign of several days of mobile optical remote sensing measurements in Tianjing city, China. The spectroscopic data were recorded by different spectrometers from which the most two mature techniques are the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) and the Solar Occultation Flux (SOF). Besides, a third measuring approach of using a ‘Flame’ spectrometer was explored to discover the sulphur dioxide (SO2) traces. Except for the different spectrometers, other auxiliary data were taken from the wind meter and the GPS tracker. To construct an integral geographic information, data inspecting, cleaning, merging were heavily applied based on physical modeling.

    Abstract [en]

    A modern car’s safety and reliability is heavily influenced by the durability of its components and subsystems. These elements’ strength and durability is evaluated with the help of Computer Aided Engineering simulations, test rides on special test tracks and thorough simulations in test rigs. These three types of simulations are sources for data which can be analysed and compared. The data analysis is currently performed using a number of commercial programs as well as manually, which makes the process lengthy and difficult. However, it can be improved by incorporating the most useful analysis tools along with the extra ones which the currently used programs lack into a new program. These tools were put together to form the scope of this master thesis. Its purpose is to deliver a Graphical User Interface based application, which will incorporate the needs of the engineers in an intuitive matter. The software is created in Python programming language together with PyQt framework for GUI implementation. The application’s main purpose is to read measurement data files, perform specific calculations on them and present the results on screen, both in the form of figures and numerical data. Additional functions of the program include creating a sequence of test events and saving the analysis results as an MS Excel file type report.

    Abstract [en]

    Hydrogen electrolysis has gone through a number of stages in research and applications. From what we can see from this report, there are several ways of producing hydrogen electrolysis, and several applications.

    The main purposes of this report however, is not to describe what hydrogen electrolysis is and its applications. Research and experiments has already proven that it is a functioning technology. The aim is to gather the necessary information, both theoretically and practically to be able, from a technical and business point of view analyze if this in fact is a realistic solution.

    To maintain a system of sustainable energy has always been an attractive market and there has existed a number of technologies that has had their share of the fame. However, most of these solutions have shown not to be viable, lucrative or technically scalable. Hence, the important issue to address is whether this is a solution worth investing in.

    The information gathered for the theory is based on technical reports, academic scripture and literature. All of which can be back tracked to its original source.

    The practical test is done by using a test kit made for universities and other institutes to better understand how hydrogen electrolysis works. The materials used are all scientifically acceptable according to the theories and technologies surrounding hydrogen electrolysis. Hence, the data gathered from the test kits are all accurate according to current research.

    A stream validation system called SVALI is developed in order to continuously validate correct behavior of industrial equipment. A functional data model allows the user to define meta-data, analyses, and queries about the monitored equipment in terms of types and functions. Two different approaches to validate that sensor readings in a data stream indicate correct equipment behavior are supported: with the model-and-validate approach anomalies are detected based on a physical model, while with learn-and-validate anomalies are detected by comparing streaming data with a model of normal behavior learnt during a training period. Both models are expressed on a high level using the functional data model and query language. The experiments show that parallel stream processing enables SVALI to scale very well with respect to system throughput and response time. The paper is based on a real world application for wheel loader slippage detection at Volvo Construction Equipment implemented in SVALI. © 2016 The Author(s)

    Abstract [en]

    In order to reduce the large execution time of an existing fingerprint enhancement system, a parallel implementation method based on GPU via CUDA is proposed. Firstly, the necessity and feasibility of employing parallel programming for the whole system are analyzed. Then pre-processing, global analysis, local analysis and matched filtering of the whole fingerprint enhancement system is designed, optimized and implemented respectively using parallel computing technology via CUDA. Finally, numerous fingerprints from FVC2000 databases are tested and the  obtained execution time is compared with that of the CPU based system. The results show that the execution time is significantly reduced by using the parallel implementation method based on GPU.

    Identication of cartridge is very essential in the field of forensics, military or people who collect ammunitions. The cartridges can beidentied by their headstamps.This thesis presents work on identification and matching of cartridge headstamp from the image. The Libor Masek's open source iris recognition algorithm is considered for the identification of cartridge pattern from the image.The dataset is devoleped with the cartridge headstamp patterns and matching of cartridge headstamp patterns is implemented. For matching of the cartridge pattern the Hamming distance is considered as the metric to differentiate interclass and intraclass comparisons. Variance is used as a criteria to discard the unwanted areas of the cartridge headstamp pattern.Four distinct cartridge headstamp patterns are considered. Three cartridges of each headstamp pattern are considered for intra class comparisons. The validation of the method is performed.

    Noise reduction in whisper speech based on the auditory masking model2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents the issue of whispered speech enhancement. Based on multi-band spectral subtraction method where the introduced musical residual noise occurs, the proposed approach performs parametric subtraction according to the WSS (Whispered Sensitive Scale) method that is particular for whispered speech processing and auditory masking model. The algorithm is characterized by a tradeoff mechanism between the amount of the whispered speech distortion, noise reduction, and the level of musical residual noise, which are determined by appropriate adjusting the subtraction parameters. Compared with traditional subtractive-type algorithms, the proposed method results in a significant reduction of musical residual noise. Finally, objective and subjective evaluations are implemented illustrating the improvements over traditional subtractive-type algorithms.

    Abstract [en]

    MRI image (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) as a universal body checkup method in modern medicine. It can help doctors to analyze the condition of patients as soon as possible. As the medical images, the MRI images have high quality and a large amount of data, which requires more transmission time and larger storage capacity.

    To reduce transmission time and storage capacity, the compression and decompression technology is applied. Now most MRI images are colour, but most theses still use gray MRI images to research. Compressed color MRI images is a new research area.

    In this thesis, some basic theories of the compression technoloy and medical technology were firstly introduced, then basic strcture and kernel algorithm of Huffman coding were explained in detail. Finally, Huffman coding was implemented in MATLAB to compress and decompress the colour MRI images.The result of the experiment shows that the Huffman coding in colour MRI image compression can get high compression ratio and coding efficient.
