    Abstract [sv]

    I Sverige har handeln, sedan 60- och 70-talet, genomgått en omfattande strukturomvandling. Från att ha ägt rum i städernas centrum har den lokaliserats till allt mer perifera lägen - en trend som resulterat i de externa köpcentrum vi ser runt om i landet idag. Det kan konstateras att bilen spelat en stor roll i utvecklingen av externa köpcentrum; handelns omstrukturering hade inte kunnat ske om det inte vore för bilismens framväxt och den ökade mobilitet som den gav upphov till. I uppsatsens litteraturgenomgång konstateras att bilismen inte bara krympte avstånden utan även skapade nya, med en rad problem som följd, bland annat bilberoende transportstrukturer och negativ klimatpåverkan. Dessa transportstrukturer står i konflikt med miljökvalitetsmålet Begränsad klimatpåverkan, det miljökvalitetsmål som Regeringen anser är Sveriges högs prioriterade. Trots detta planeras och byggs externa köpcentrum runt om i Sverige idag. I uppsatsens fallstudie undersöks hur de externa köpcentrum Östra Torp i Uddevalla samt Haganäs i Älmhult planeras för gång-, cykel- och kollektivtrafikanter samt vilka hänsyn som tas till dessa transportmedel i planeringsfasen. För att kunna bedöma vilka hänsyn som tagits har en metod arbetats fram, vilken resulterat i en checklista innehållande viktiga planeringsprinciper för dessa transportmedel. Metoden baseras på vedertagna planeringsrekommendationer för gång-, cykel- och kollektivtrafik. Det kan konstateras att vid planeringen av de externa köpcentrum som undersökts har hänsyn tagits till gång-, cykel och kollektivtrafik, men detta har inte gjorts konsekvent, och således har planeringen brister som skulle kunna åtgärdas. Vidare kan konstateras att planeringen på området för det externa köpcentrumet främst utgått ifrån den bilburnes premisser vilket också har resulterat i en för externa köpcentrum karaktäristisk, bilorienterad utformning. Vidare undersöker uppsatsen hur dessa brister skulle kunna tillgodoses i ett avslutande gestaltningsförslag. Syftet är att visa på hur en alternativ planering skulle kunna gestaltas för att förbättra de fysiska förutsättningarna för mindre bilberoende trafikstrukturer och således resultera i resmönster vilka kan minska motsättningen mellan utformningen av externa köpcentrum och miljökvalitetsmålet Begränsad klimatpåverkan. Målet med uppsatsen är att undersöka om, och i så fall hur, motsättningen mellan miljökvalitetsmålet Begränsad klimatpåverkan och externa köpcentrums utformning kan motverkas genom att planera externa köpcentrum enligt studerade planeringsprinciper för gång-, cykel- och kollektivtrafik. I uppsatsen konstateras att det går att planera externa köpcentrum på ett sätt som förbättrar de fysiska förutsättningarna för gång-, cykel och kollektivtrafik, samt visa på en metod för hur detta kan göras. Med checklistan som hjälpmedel skulle misstag kunna avhjälpas i ett tidigt planeringsskede. Efterkonstruktioner kan därmed undvikas och den fysiska miljön eventuellt bli bättre. Vidare kan konstateras att metoden som framtagits specifikt för denna uppsats, i form av checklistan, utgår ifrån generella normer och resonemang och kan därför användas vid planering av andra externa köpcentrum.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis looks at how Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) be carried out to help society move towards sustainability. It starts by introducing the reader into the essential concepts about Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), TVET, and the barriers to integrating ESD into TVET. It also provides information about the case study conducted in a TVET organization in Ireland which is integrating ESD into TVET. The thesis presents the key aspects that TVET organization need to have in order to successfully support SSD and it also provides a definition of success which is developing a workforce skilled for sustainability where sustainability is defined by the four sustainability principles. After presenting the key aspects, it looks at the strengths and weaknesses, in the lens of the key aspects, of the case study and three other TVET organizations. It later provides with recommendations based on the challenges found integrating ESD into TVET and the presented key aspects in order for TVET organizations to reach the vision of success.

    The aim of this research is to discover ways that multi-stakeholder platforms for collaboration can be instrumental in the efforts of the media industry to achieve compliance with sustainability. Industries have gained awareness of their responsibilities towards environmental, social and economic welfare, and the media has a powerful role within society. The media industry's behavior is reflected both through its impacts of business operations as well as media products. The premise of this research suggests that an effective platform model fosters interpersonal, stimulating and energizing conversations amongst stakeholders in a neutral and friendly environment. In collaboration with various media stakeholders and showcasing an existing UK-based platform, the Media CSR Forum, and in investigating its structure and membership dynamics, it was possible to gain insight of common challenges for media companies. We identified the potential for platform models to help media companies plan strategically with the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development. Strategic planning for sustainable development can help the media industry to face the challenge that their current contribution to un-sustainability represents and become a key player for sustainable societies.

    Abstract [en]

    Society is facing a great sustainability challenge, where the design of its social systems has made it increasingly difficult for the planet to support humanity. Given the complexity of the sustainability challenge, the planet requires a shift in the way society is organised and a commitment to sustainability from individuals and communities. This thesis explores how neighbourhood hubs can serve as a platform to engage individuals to take an active participatory role in their community. Neighbourhood hubs are defined as: a fixed physical gathering place which intentionally brings people together to carry out services, activities, programs and events that serve the local community. This research sought to uncover the dynamic and engaging characteristics of neighbourhood hubs that attract participants as well as the benefits of hubs to the local community in the form of community capitals. By combining the approach of Strategic Sustainable Development with the engaging characteristics of hubs, this thesis provides a planning tool to help hubs work towards their vision and move society towards sustainability. Neighbourhood hubs are found to be an effective and inspiring way for communities to move towards a vibrant and sustainable future.

    PRODUCT SERVICE SYSTEMS AND MODULAR DEVELOPMENT: Implications and Opportunities in the Construction Equipment Industry2013Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)

    Volvo Construction Equipment överväger att tillämpa en modulär design till sin organisation i syfte att begränsa den växande immateriella information och det växande sortiment av delar inom företaget som finns idag. Volvo ser även till möjligheterna med modulär design för att möjliggöra en omflyttning av produktion, försäljning och logistik inom den närmaste framtiden för organisatorisk tillväxt och för att minska det industriella fotavtrycket. Därav syftet med denna uppsats; att undersöka möjligheter och hot för att genomföra modulär design i Volvo Construction Equipment. Analysen är fokuserad på generiska aspekter på modularitet och organisatoriska svagheter inom Volvo CE mot att genomföra en ny organisationsstruktur, produktdesign och produktion med modulär design. Modularitet möjliggör för företaget att gå mot att minska begränsningen av materiell försäljning och ger en möjlighet att erbjuda system med Product och Service lösningar som en helhetslösning för varje enskild kund. Genom att implementera författarnas gemensamma kunskap och utbildning inom teknik roterande kring materiella och immateriella produkter samt tjänster tillsammans med innovation, och med informella intervjuer av intressenter, har resultaten i denna avhandling uppnåtts. Analysen av resultaten uppnåddes genom att implementera metodiken Design Research Methodology till strukturen, forskningsmetod och gjorda intervjuer i avhandlingen. Det finns en tydlig möjlighet för Volvo CE att genomföra modulär design eftersom de informativa flöden, innovation, forskning och utveckling förstärks av en korrekt modulär design. Även om det finns en klar risk i att ändra en väletablerad produkts design, utveckling process och organisations struktur, är möjligheterna i att skapa en produkt strategi med servicesystem och att återvinna återvinna värde i företaget med modularitet väl värt risken. Oförståelse för hur man optimerar en modulär design kan innebära ytterligare risker och förklarar varför Volvo CE överväger revidera sina produkter och organisation med en ny design, och då kanske en modulär struktur. Detta har lett till att författarna rekommenderar att genomföra en allmän och specifik utbildning i modularitet inom Volvo CE för att säkerställa ett gemensamt språk för modularitet och öka spårbarheten av utvecklingen inom företaget. För att öka den organisatoriska hastigheten kring utveckling, rekommenderar författarna också en ny datormiljö som gör att de olika disciplinerna i teknik och marknadsföring ligger närmre till hands för att modularisera produkter, tjänster och processer samtidigt som förståelsen av ämnet blir enklare att uppnå. Detta maximerar effektiviteten i den organisatoriska strukturen för att förändra och förbättra mot en modulär utbyggnad och att ytterligare påskynda Volvo CE : s tillväxt , marknadsandelar och intäkter

    Sustainable Stadia Actualizing the Potential of Community- Owned Stadia Towards Sustainability2008Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    Professional sporting events draw staggering crowds to stadia on a yearly basis. This combined, with the prosocial psychological effects of attending professional games and the cultural meaning of stadia to a community, provide excellent opportunities for municipalities to use their stadia in a movement towards global socio-ecological sustainability. While these opportunities are available, the industry is not well established to realize their potential. Our research, through application of the framework for strategic sustainable development (FSSD), offers measures to facilitate such a move. In application of the framework, however, a key threat of professional team monopoly power was identified, putting into question the perpetuation of public ownership over facilities with professional teams as tenants. If a solution is to be reached within this model, a multi-stakeholder approach is endorsed, where reduction of team monopoly power is conceded for the long-term benefits to municipalities.

    Abstract [en]

    Innovation has been powering industrial development for 200 years. Today, in times of social and environmental pressures, it is even more needed to support the transition towards a more sustainable society. Multinational corporations are potential systemic change agents by their global presence and impact magnitude on economics. However, a combination of short-termism and technological inertia rather favours incremental innovation. Meanwhile, some smaller companies have quickly integrated the value of doing ‘better’ rather than doing ‘less bad’, making innovation go hand-in-hand with sustainable development. Therefore, acquisitions represent an opportunity to spread a solution to addressing sustainability challenges faster, but the corporate decision-makers need concise, constructive guidelines for selecting and integrating these external opportunities. This thesis describes how a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) helps to identify the gaps in the current practices and supports the creation of guidelines for corporations acquiring innovative companies in order to move towards sustainability.

    Mer än hälften av alla lägenheter i Sverige byggdes under åren 1950-1975, den perioden som i svensk bebyggelsehistoria brukar kallas för efterkrigstiden. Bilden av områden från den här tiden är ofta negativ och det är ofta i områden från den här tiden som de sociala problemområdena i svenska städer finns. Idag är många av dessa områden nedgångna och slitna och i behov av en upprustning. Områden från den här tiden planerades efter andra förutsättningar och lever idag inte alltid upp till de krav som ställs på resurshushållning och kretsloppstänkande. Den här uppsatsen fokuserar på de möjligheter som finns i förnyelsen av dessa områden och hur en omställning mot ett hållbart ekologiskt samhälle kan appliceras där. En ekologisk omställning kan bidra till att förbättra hållbarhetens alla dimensioner. I den fysiska miljön kan många åtgärder göras för att förbättra situationen i dessa bostadsområden. De är ofta väl avgränsade och i förnyelseåtgärder är det relativt enkelt att engagera invånarna. Förändringar i den fysiska miljön skapar förutsättningar att förbättra områdens rykte och bidra till en ökad social stabilitet. Augustenborg i Malmö är ett typexempel för den tidiga efterkrigstidens bebyggelseområden. Området har genomgått en stor förändringsprocess under en åtta års period. Vilket gett resultat på såväl den ekologiska, som de sociala och ekonomiska aspekterna av hållbar utveckling.

    A Foundation for Sustainable Product Development2008Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    Product development is a particularly critical intervention point for the transformation of society towards sustainability. Current socio-ecological impacts over product life-cycles are evidence that current practices are insufficient. The aim of this thesis is to form a foundation for sustainable product development through the integration of a sustainability perspective into product development procedures and processes. Literature reviews and theoretical considerations as well as interviews, questionnaires, observations, testing and action research through case studies in various companies have indicated gaps in current methodology and have guided the development of a new general Method for Sustainable Product Development (MSPD). This method combines a framework for strategic sustainable development based on backcasting from basic sustainability principles with a standard concurrent engineering development model. A modular system of guiding questions, derived by considering the sustainability principles and the product life-cycle, is the key feature. Initial testing indicates that this MSPD works well for identification of sustainability problems as well as for generation of possible solutions. However, these tests also indicate that there is sometimes a desire for a quick overview of the sustainability performance of a specific product category. This is to guide early strategic decisions before the more comprehensive and detailed work with the MSPD is undertaken, or, alternatively, when an overview is sufficient to make decisions. In response, a Template for Sustainable Product Development (TSPD) approach is presented as a supplement to the MSPD. To generate products that support sustainable development of society it is necessary to combine sustainability assessments with improvements of technical product properties. An introductory procedure for such sustainability-driven design optimization is suggested based on a case study. For maximum efficiency of a company in finding viable pathways towards sustainability, it is also necessary to coordinate different methods and tools that are useful for sustainable product development and integrate them into the overall decision-making processes at different levels in companies. To find gaps in the sustainability integration in a company’s decision system, an assessment approach is suggested based on case studies. A general conclusion from this research is that the support needed for making sustainability-related decisions are not systematically integrated in companies today. However, this thesis also indicates that it is possible to create generic methods and tools that aid the integration of sustainability aspects in companies’ strategic decision-making and product development. These methods and tools can be used to guide the prioritization of investments and technical optimization on the increasingly sustainability-driven market, thus providing a foundation for competitive sustainable product development.

    Clarification of sustainability consequences of manufacturing processes in conceptual design2013Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    In the conceptual design of aircraft jet engine components, not only the product architecture and dimensions are set but the associate manufacturing processes are also defined. From a design decision point of view it is critical to identify and characterize the consequences of alternative solutions. This paper reports on a case, where a milling process needed to be selected in an early design phase of a jet engine component. An Electro-Chemical Milling process was considered but its impact on sustainability needed clarification. An approach that combined a simplified Environmental Impact Assessment with a Strategic Sustainability Assessment was used. The main finding and contribution from the work is a method that helps to clarify consequences of sustainability-related issues by combining the two analysis tools with a risk analysis implementation. The results reveal that once the consequences can be clarified, increased attention and understanding are gained.

    Abstract [en]

    This article aims to explore a new approach to assess company decision systems regarding sustainability-related communication and decision support between senior management and product development levels. The assessment approach was developed in theory and its applicability was directly tested in action research in two small and medium-sized companies and two large companies. The results were validated against experiences made by two management consultancies. Our study indicates that successful companies should: (i) integrate sustainability into business goals and plans, backed up by suitable (ii) internal incentives and disincentives and (iii) decision support tools. Our study also indicates that the new assessment approach can be used as a template to assess the current state of sustainability integration in company decision systems.

    Next generation jet engine technologies are typically driven by performance, value and environmental challenges, and appropriate technologies are developed in international research programs. One on-going engine component technology project at an aerospace component manufacturer aims to develop an engine with less fuel consumption. A likely consequence is higher pressure in the core engine, which leads to higher temperature. One way to handle the higher temperature is using a more advanced Ti-alloy for the product component, which will render a different sustainability profile. One weakness in current decision situations is the inability to clarify and understand the “value” and “sustainability” implications compared to e.g. performance features of concepts. Both “value” and “sustainability” include a rich set of features important for successful introduction of new products and product-service solutions to the market. The purpose with this research is to provide decision support for companies in early development phases for assessment of value and sustainability consequences over product-service system lifecycles. A workshop was held with the aerospace component manufacturer and a value chain partner focusing on material handling, to: i) get a better understanding of activities, flows and ownership related to the studied materials at the two companies, ii) to understand the companies’ perspective at new suggested scenarios with regard to these materials, and iii) define relevant scenarios to look into more in depth from asustainability and value perspective. Three different scenarios were developed with differences in ownership, responsibilities and value streams. It is therefore essential to be able to quickly assess and optimize consequences of such alternative scenarios. Based on the workshop experiences and scenarios, a modeling and simulation approach to assess sustainability and value consequences for the scenarios is proposed. The sustainability consequences are based on a sustainability life cycle assessment and a risk assessment. Key features of the proposed tool include: consideration of the time dimension, societal sustainability consequences, risk assessment, company value assessment, and cost/revenue perspectives.

    Abstract [en]

    This article aims to present identified key elements for successful implementation of a strategic sus- tainability perspective in the early phases of the product innovation process. In-depth interview studies were conducted in six companies within the same corporate group. These, together with a review of literature, previous research and company documents, were a foundation for evaluating if and how a strategic sustainability perspective has been successfully implemented on a day-to-day basis in the product innovation processes of the studied companies. The results are divided into strengths and challenges of the companies with regard to implementing a strategic sustainability perspective in the product innovation process. From this research, eight key elements for successful implementation of a strategic sustainability perspective have been identified. These elements are divided into four categories: organization, internal processes, roles, and tools. It is posited that incorporating these key elements into product innovation processes will encourage a company to have a strategic sustainability perspective, which will support the company’s long-term success.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis uses a systematic understanding of sustainability informed by human needs, learning and design theory to explore ways in which small retail environments can effectively communicate sustainability concepts. The envisioned outcome of successfully communicating and implementing sustainability within retail environments is a lasting change in people’s daily behaviors. The methods of literature review, surveys, human needs investigation and professional validation are used to develop a behavioral change model centered on human needs and learning as well as six communication guidelines. The appendix of this thesis contains a user-friendly pocket guidebook titled The Six Guidelines for Sustainable Retail. The guidebook is designed as a quick-reference tool for retailers, designers and employees. It contains principles, visuals and concepts of sustainability for daily communication and comprehension purposes.

    Abstract [en]

    Society is facing a crisis of un-sustainability. The sector of higher education is well poised to support transition to a sustainable society. This thesis assesses the efforts of the Campus Sustainability Movement (CSM) in the US and Canada relative to a Strategic Sustainable Development Framework. Key findings indicate that the CSM is utilizing tools and engaging in a variety of actions towards sustainability. However, it is largely failing to use systems thinking to understand the complex interrelationships of its actions. Most efforts lack a strategy, and when strategy is present, it follows more from barriers than from a long-term goal. Current efforts mostly focus on environmental sustainability. The authors present a backcasting from principles of sustainability approach as one means to improve the strategy of the CSM. They also propose a vision for higher education that incorporates sustainability principles and fundamental human needs in an attempt to bring some concreteness to both the environmental and social aspects of sustainability in higher education.

    The transport sector is making slow progress towards sustainability, particularly given the urgency and scale of the sustainability challenges associated with the sector and the number of solutions that exist. This thesis uses a three-phase research methodology to identify and provide guidance to help address the barriers preventing the expansion of one of the most rapidly growing transportation alternatives: electric vehicles. The engagement of stakeholders can act as a strategic point of intervention to address these barriers and facilitate the regional market introduction of the technology. A process was therefore developed to help project management in the pre-project planning phase to address the key challenges to engagement that are commonly experienced on electric vehicle projects. The process combines a Strategic Sustainable Development approach with Best Practice for Engagement. Information was sourced from literature and interviews with experts in electric vehicles, stakeholder engagement and Strategic Sustainable Development. Initial feedback from testing the process on an electric vehicle project indicates that this guidance is timely and likely to become widely applicable on similar projects in the future.

    Abstract [en]

    This research aims to support sustainability practitioners at the beginning of a change initiative towards sustainability to increase the success of the change. Moving towards sustainability is a complex journey and requires radical and structural transformational change in companies. Mutual understanding of the company and the practitioner is required to design a suitable change process. Existing tools related to sustainability, change management, corporate analysis and assessment were analyzed. In addition, practitioners in organizational change and sustainability were interviewed. Identified were eight Areas of Inquiry for the practitioner to focus on at the initial stage of an engagement: Vision; Purpose and Commitment; Urgency, Importance and Business Case; Level of Integration of Sustainability; Business Goals and Strategy; Culture and Capacities; Communication and Stakeholder Engagement; Measurement and Reporting. These areas form a platform for dialogue to guide sustainability practitioners in gaining understanding of the organizational change capacities and sustainability within the company and, in doing so, contributes to addressing the sustainability challenge at large.

    Abstract [en]

    Youth will be dealing with the global sustainability challenge that our world is currently facing. They are considered to play a crucial role as future leaders in the transition towards a more sustainable society. These leaders need an inherent understanding of the sustainability challenge that they are confronted with. This research explores how sustainability practitioners can use Theory U in order to help younger generations approach sustainability. Both the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) and Theory U informed this research as they use a systems thinking approach to deal with complexity. A qualitative research approach was chosen, and sixteen semi-structured interviews were conducted. The results revealed seven overarching themes around youth, youth and sustainability, and using Theory U with youth. The findings suggest that Theory U can support sustainability practitioners in working with youth as it offers a strong systems thinking approach, personal development, and connectedness for youth. Complementary with the FSSD’s rigorous approach to sustainability, Theory U offers great potential to youth and sustainability that is yet untapped. In equipping youth at an early age with leadership skills, capacities, and a wider awareness, Theory U can plant the seeds for future sustainability leaders to grow.

    Currently supply chains are globally interlinked, involve many different stakeholders and have a significant impact on the socio-ecological system. They are associated with materials extraction, design, production methods and volume, which result in pollutants and waste as by-products. Procurement plays a critical role in this process by serving as a ‘gate-keeper’. It acts as a great leverage point to influence which products and services are selected by organisations from the assessment of suppliers’ performance. This thesis examines how supplier assessment and follow up tools and their use by the organisation itself can work towards full sustainability. At present, there is a gap in current practices, with the most notable being a lack of vision of success for sustainability, a definition of sustainability that is not communicated across the supply chain, and the adoption of a short-term perspective. We develop two applications - a Golden Standard model and Key Elements for the organisation to embody to maximise its use in order to bridge this gap. These applications can be used by organisations to tailor their supplier assessment and follow up tools to ultimately move towards a sustainable society.

    Abstract [en]

    The smartphone usage nearly tripled 2011 according to Cisco Virtual Networking Index. There is a high demand of energy for using popular mobile applications, which run on smartphones with limited battery life. Video streaming applications are widely used on mobile devices, and their high power consumption exhibits high variance during a live streaming session, due to varying conditions on network and application levels. Recent studies focus on the averaged power consumption statistics, while there is lack of observation on the fluctuations of the instantaneous total power consumption of the smart- phones. Network based applications consume power at all layers of the communication stack, and any fluctuation in the total power consumption during a video streaming can reveal a possible misbehaviour such as a stalling event. Until now, these events are investigated in Quality of Experience (QoE) studies through installation of high-energy demanding and hard-to-deploy network measurement tools on users’ mobile devices. In this paper, we demonstrate an ex- periment, where a user experiences a stalling event on the smartphone and observes the live instantaneous power consumption values through Mobile Power Monitoring Tool (MPMT) and Software Visualisa- tion Tool (SVT), simultaneously. We confer that the instantaneous total power consumption likely reveals the misbehaviours such as stalls during a video play- out in live video streaming on smartphones that can facilitate energy efficient QoE studies.

    Catching the download train: Energy-efficient file downloading on smartphones2014Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    The most energy-consuming applications in battery life-constrained smartphones are the ones that comprise data transmission, especially via the 3G interface. Scheduling download activities on smartphones is especially necessary, if there are multiple asynchronous downloads scattered over a long duration. The latter scenario highly increases the energy consumption of smartphones. In this paper, we investigate energy consumption with the focus on file downloading while scheduling multiple file downloads in two scenarios: serialized and parallel. We repeat the experiments on a single smartphone via its 3G and also via WiFi tethering via another smartphone. We assess the performance of the two scenarios via measurement of power consumption and corresponding download duration in a realistic environment.

    Studien syftar till att undersöka konflikter inom riksintressesystemet med särskilt fokus på värdefulla ämnen eller material. Intresset för svenska mineralfyndigheter har ökat och med nya gruvetableringar kommer konflikter om markanspråk. Syftet med studien är att utifrån samhällsstyrningen, undersöka om tillämpningen av 3 och 4 MB följer intentionerna med lagstiftningen med fokus på mineralnäringen och dess konflikt med andra intressen. Riksintressesystemet som studeras, uppkom på 60- och 70-talen på grund av att staten upplevde ett behov av att kunna ange långsiktiga nationella riktlinjer för mark- och vattenhushållningen. Genom det skulle konflikter mellan industrietableringar, bebyggelseutveckling och bevarandevärda kvaliteter hanteras. Arbetet med att utarbeta riktlinjer skulle inbegripa staten, länsstyrelserna och kommunerna vilka skulle föra en dialog med planer, utredningar och riktlinjer. Arbetet utmynnade i en lagreglering av riktlinjerna som blev hushållningsbestämmelserna i naturresurslagen, NRL. NRL angav skydd för verksamhetsanknutna och geografiskt anknutna riksintressen. Under 90-talet infördes riksintressena i MB. De har kritiserats för att brista i tillämpningen och att systemet inte är anpassat till dagens situation. Regeringen har därför startat en utredning med uppdraget att se över riksintressena. De teoretiska utgångspunkterna för studien har varit governancelitteratur som beskriver hur förskjutningar i samhällsstyrningen sker genom samverkan mellan privata och offentliga aktörer. Även plan- och miljöparadigmen som företräder expertkunskap och kommunikation som sätt att ta fram rätt beslut. I studien görs en fallstudie på två koncessionsansökningar (ansökningar om att få bedriva gruvverksamhet), Rönnbäcken och Stekenjokk, där båda fall berör en konflikt mellan framför allt rennäringen och mineralnäringen. En kvalitativ innehållsanalys används med hjälp av analyskategorier från governancelitteraturen för att ställa upp och studera beslutsdokumenten kring ärendena. Analysen av de två fall som studerats visar att en viss förskjutning i samhälls- styrningen skett där privata aktörer initierar processen att utpeka riksintressen för värdefulla ämnen eller material. I övrigt är processen dock centralt styrd med statliga myndigheter som fattar beslut om att peka ut riksintressen och bevilja eller avslå bearbetningskoncession för gruvetableringar. Inom ramen för paradigmen konstateras också att olika instanser i processen tar beslut inom de olika tankemönstren vilket får effekten att beslut grundas på olika kriterier. Utifrån studiens frågeställningar konstateras att konflikter råder och kommer bl.a. till uttryck genom att aktörer bedömer påtaglig skada olika. Riksintressesystemet har en tydlig ärendegång hos statliga myndigheter för prövningen av koncessioner, men skiljer sig åt mellan ärendena. Effekten av att bevarande- och exploateringsintressen ligger under samma paragraf, riskerar att skapa samma problem som fanns vid riksplaneringens tillkomst där bevarandeintressen inte tillmättes något skydd mot exploateringsintressen. Till slut dras slutsatsen att intentionerna inte följs eftersom regeringen i ett ärende beviljat en gruvetablering trots att gruvan anses som kortsiktig markanvändning. Långsiktighet och bevarandeintressen skulle i intentionerna ges starkare skydd, men i ena fallet är det trots allt tydligt att den ekonomiska betydelsen av fyndigheten inom riksintresset för värdefulla ämnen eller material väger tyngre än andra riksintressena inom området.

    The world-wide present business-to-business product- and service selling companies define their global and local strategies in a different way. The main aim of this research is to investigate these differences and analyze them in terms of their origins and influence on these companies. Primary research question: How service- and product selling companies differ in defining their global and local strategies? Supporting research question: How significant are these differences in light of the performances of the companies? As a research method a single-case study with holistic design has been chosen. Both primary and secondary data have been used in analysis. The authors build, present and test two strategy definition-based models: one for product- and one for service selling company. For verification, empirical data from two corresponding case companies have been used. Conclusion: there are clear differences between product- and service selling companies when it comes to strategy definitions. Service selling companies tend to build a deep and long-lasting relationship between the company and customer which is a base of driving this type of business. For these types of companies the customer itself is in center. In case of product-selling companies more focus is being put on channel optimization, focusing on core businesses, making concessions and terminating bad customer accounts, but the main core of strategy is based on quality and innovation of the end product.

    This paper evaluates the effects on profitability of biofuel production if biofuel producers would sell the waste heat from the production to a local district heating system. All analyses have been performed considering four different technology cases for biofuel production. Two technology cases include ethanol production which is followed by by-production of raw biogas. This biogas can be upgraded and sold as biofuel (the first technology case) or directly used for combined heat and power production (the second technology case). The third and the fourth technology cases are Fischer-Tropsch diesel and dimethyl ether production plants based on biomass gasification. Two different district heating price levels and two different future energy market scenarios were considered. The sensitivity analyses of the discount rate were performed as well. In the case of energy market conditions, the profitability depends above all on the price ratio between biomass (used as the feedstock for biofuel production) and crude oil (used as the feedstock for fossil diesel and gasoline production). The reason for this is that the gate biofuel prices (the prices on which the biofuel would be sold) were calculated assuming that the final prices at the filling stations are the same as the prices of the replaced fossil fuel. The price ratios between biomass and district heating, and between biomass and electricity, also have an influence on the profitability, since higher district heating and electricity prices lead to higher revenues from the heat/electricity by-produced. Due to high biofuel (ethanol + biogas) efficiency, the ethanol production plant which produces upgraded biogas has the lowest biofuel production costs. Those costs would be lower than the biofuel gate prices even if the support for transportation fuel produced from renewable energy sources were not included. If the raw biogas that is by-produced would instead be used directly for combined heat and power production, the revenues from the electricity and heat would increase, but at the same time the biofuel efficiency would be lower, which would lead to higher production costs. On the other hand, due to the fact that it has the highest heat efficiency compared to the other technologies, the ethanol production in this plant shows a high sensitivity to the district heating price level, and the economic benefit from introducing such a plant into a district heating system is most obvious. Assuming a low discount rate (6%), the introduction of such a plant into a district heating system would lead to between 28% and 52% (depending on the district heating price level and energy market scenario) lower biofuel production costs. Due to the lower revenues from the heat and electricity co-produced, and higher capital investments compared to the ethanol production plants, Fischer-Tropsch diesel and dimethyl ether productions are shown to be profitable only if high support for transportation fuel produced from renewable energy sources is included.

    Biofuel production through polygeneration with heat as one of the by-products implies a possibility forcooperation between transport and district heating sectors by introducing large-scale biofuel production into district heating systems. The cooperation may have effects on both the biofuel production costs and the district heating production costs. This paper is the second part of the study that investigates those effects. The biofuel production costs evaluation, considering heat and electricity as by-products, was performed in the first part of the study. In this second part of the study, an evaluation of how such cooperation would influence the district heating production costs using Stockholm's district heating system as a case study was performed. The plants introduced in the district heating system were chosen depending on the future development of the transport sector. In order to perform sensitivity analyses of different energy market conditions, two energy market scenarios were applied. Despite the higher revenues from the sale of by-products, due to the capital intense investments required, the introduction of large-scale biofuel production into the district heating system does not guarantee economic benefits. Profitability is highly dependent on the types of biofuel production plants and energy market scenarios. The results show that large-scale biogas and ethanol production may lead to a significant reduction in the district heating production costs in both energy market scenarios, especially if support for transportation fuel produced from renewable energy sources is included. If the total biomass capacity of the biofuel production plants introduced into the district heating system is 900 MW, the district heating production costs would be negative and the whole public transport sector and more than 50% of the private cars in the region could be run on the ethanol and biogas produced. The profitability is shown to be lower if the raw biogas that is by-produced in the biofuel production plants is used for combined and power production instead of being sold as transportation fuel; however, this strategy may still result in profitability if the support for transportation fuel produced from renewable energy sources is included. Investments in Fischer-ropsch diesel and dimethyl ether production are competitive to the investments in combined and power production only if high support for transportation fuel produced from renewable energy sources is included.

    Abstract [en]

    In order for Japanese companies to move strategically towards sustainability, it is necessary to identify and understand the national and organizational factors that can hinder or facilitate this organizational shift. Literature reviews, workshops with a Japanese company, questionnaires, and interviews were conducted in order to identify these factors. The results showed that there are many common sustainability barriers between Japan and ‘western’ countries. In addition, there are some Distinctive Cultural Characteristics (DCCs) specific to Japan that have a significant impact on the success of an organization that wants to move towards sustainability. According to the findings, suggestions for sustainability practitioners are provided, which involve understanding the barriers and taking advantage of the DCCs in order to help the Japanese companies to move towards sustainability more effectively.

    Abstract [en]

    This research aimed to find strategic methods in community engagement related to regional sustainable development, specifically within the context of regions in Europe and North America that are applying for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development was presented as a planning framework that can fill gaps in the current Biosphere Reserve planning process. A tool for assessing community engagement based on the five Process Characteristics of transparency, cooperation, openness, inclusiveness, and involvement was created and used to explore community engagement practices in six UNESCO Biosphere Reserve regions in Sweden and Canada. The assessment of methods used in those six regions yielded a list of nine methods which stood out in contributing to community engagement.

    Sustainability reporting is a vital tool to communicate an organisation’s sustainability performance to stakeholders. Sustainability reporting also allows an organisation to communicate its vision, goals and strategic plans. In order to be strategic towards sustainability, an organisation should have a vision of where it wants to go, and assess where it is today, so as to take the right initiatives towards its vision. This thesis focuses on how GRI sustainability reporting and strategic planning towards sustainability can be combined in an integrated process to help organisations move towards sustainability. The Integrated Process allows an organisation to gain a better understanding of its sustainability context; design resilient strategies in light of that context using a backcasting from Sustainability Principles approach; and report its sustainability performance and progress in bridging the gap towards sustainability, transparently to internal and external stakeholders.

    Consumerism plays an important role in the development of society, and consumption can be a driving force to shift society into a sustainable future. This paper defines ethical consumers and the restaurant industry as the research field, after analysing the current reality of restaurant industry, and the existing tools for ethical consumers to make their purchasing decision, we bridge the gaps by creating an ideal eco-labelling process for the restaurant industry. Eco-Etiquette is our ideal sustainable tool to better inform ethical consumers in their purchasing decisions. This paper also discusses other ways to assist ethical consumers, and identify some aspects for further research.

    Företag runt om i världen i dag erkänner mer och mer behovet av långsiktigt hållbara strategier integreras i sin kärnverksamhet. Detta har lett till användandet av Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ram. H & M och UNIQLO är inte annorlunda. De är etablerade globala detaljhandelsföretag och som drabbats hårt av konsumenterna efterfrågan på ett hållbart arbetsprocessen. Kraven är ofta hörs när nyheten träffar av problem i försörjningskedjan. Det kan vara frågor som otillfredsställande arbetsförhållanden i fabriker, miljöfrågor som orsakas av produktion och allmän obalans i arbetsmarknadspolitiska åtgärder. Sådana problem har satt press på företagen att anta en korrekt rapportering ramar för deras hållbarhetsarbete och det är fokus för denna uppsats. Målet är att förstå hur väl organisationerna har använt CSR och målet är att titta på deras beteende inom ramen för sina processer leverantörskedjan och deras miljöfokus. Vi kommer då att jämföra dem enligt en hållbar mätning ramverk kallat Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). GRI är ett ramverk ofta används av högsta internationella företag idag och eftersom den har ett diversifierat perspektiv på företagens sociala ansvar, det kan utöka åsikter om företagens sociala ansvar från konsumenten och företagets perspektiv på en global rapportering perspektiv. Detta perspektiv är opartiskt och globalt accepterad. De slutsatser som dras i slutet av avhandlingen visar likheter och skillnader i de bolag CSR insatser och det tomrum som de behöver för att fylla för att verkligen stärka sitt fokus på socialt ansvarstagande. En väg framåt är att förstå dessa skillnader och skapa en strategi som kommer att hjälpa företagen att övervinna dessa hinder i det långa loppet.

    Electricity generation is both a major contributor to the root causes of environmental unsustainability and an energy source that will likely play an important role in the transition to a sustainable society. Because renewable sources of electricity generation are seen as sustainable as a group, there is a danger that investments will be made in renewable technologies that do not effectively move society towards sustainability. We propose the use of a scientific, principles-based definition of sustainability to compare current and future renewable electricity options on their sustainability potential. This study presents a pilot decision-support comparison tool, Guide for Sustainable Energy Decisions (GSED), designed to give investors, policy makers, and manufacturers strategic guidance on the most effective renewable technologies to invest in for sustainability. The tool is based on a modified version of life cycle assessment (LCA) that allows comparisons of the upstream and downstream effects of generation technologies from a whole-systems sustainability perspective. Early feedback by experts suggests that the tool has strong potential to serve as an effective comparison tool and help decision-makers make strategic investments for sustainability.

    I Kota, Rajasthan, är fattigdomen utbredd i flera områden och det finns ett stort behov av att kartlägga sårbarhet och anpassningsförmåga hos olika samhällsgrupper och sektorer till klimatvariation och –förändring, och att formulera hållbara planeringsstrategier. Staden växer snabbt som ett regionalt centrum och möter stora utmaningar när det gäller vattensituationen och negativa effekter av klimatförändring. Workshops med nyckelpersoner i den kommunala förvaltningen har genomförts för att identifiera sårbarheter och diskutera konkreta strategier för att öka anpassningsförmågan på olika nivåer. Artikeln fokuserar på vattenresursplanering som en av de kritiska framtidsfrågorna relaterat till urbanisering och klimatförändringar.

    Major drivers behind increased efforts in product development are the increased competition due to globalisation and the urgent transformation of society towards sustainability. Furthermore, the average product lifetime has been compressed significantly over the last decade. Due to these trends, there is increasing demand for an efficient product development process. Cutting time-to-market, reducing costs and increasing quality are widely accepted as key factors to successful product development. Consideration of sustainability aspects in product development is also becoming increasingly important. Methods and tools that are useful also for small and medium sized enterprises are of particular importance for the Swedish industry. This thesis suggests a definition of lean prototyping and points to its potential for supporting efficient product development. This is done through two case studies: a soil compactor machine treated as a multi-body system and a water jet cutting machine treated as a mechatronic system. Lean prototyping is defined as a coordinated approach to experimentation with the purpose of achieving cost-efficient and accurate enough prediction of product characteristics to support optimisation and well-informed design decisions during product development, especially in the early stages. This often involves an iterative search for and use of a suitable combination of virtual and limited physical prototypes as well as the reuse of knowledge from previous projects. The case studies are performed in cooperation with one small and one medium sized company, indicating the usefulness of the approach for different product types as well as for different company sizes. More specifically, the validated multi-body model of the soil compactor machine describes the dynamics of the machine satisfactorily and the optimisation study shows a significant potential for improved compaction capacity. This potential would not likely been found through traditional physical prototyping. The related comparative study of contact transition conditions is a contribution to consistent impact modelling in multi-body dynamics in general. The real-time virtual machine concept for simulation of the water jet cutting machine, including detailed mechanical component models, is unique. The fully automated concept implementation makes it a promising base for multidisciplinary design optimisation of the water jet cutting machine, and probably of mechatronic products in general.

    As humanity transitions towards a global society, opportunities and challenges have grown in equal magnitude. Severe, global depletion of ecosystems and social turmoil have initiated a widespread public response. If the many small actions were to connect and collaborate strategically, then a greater impact could be made on the system to move towards sustainability. Along with continuous technological and scientific development, society is discovering new ways of organizing itself for a more just, sustainable and harmonious world. This is giving birth to a large social body that is becoming aware of its own existence and is learning to take its first baby footsteps. This study aims to describe the conditions of successful collaboration of a social body, a collaborative process with phases as well as guidelines and tools for each phase. A navigation tool has been outlined to aid practitioners in complex systems to move towards success in any collaborative context. This thesis is a contribution to the creation of a thriving humanity.

    In order to understand the basic definition of the natural material, references of recently published articles were studied. From these articles, the definition of different terms like renewable material, recyclable material, biodegradable material, sustainable material and finally natural material were collected. Furthermore, a classification of natural fibre was drawn. One of these natural fibres - the coconut was chosen for a more detail analysis in mechanical point of view. An integrated method to analyse the sustainability of the coconut fibre as one of the blend components in building construction will be suggested. Finally, several uses of the fibre are reviewed.

    Denna uppsats presenterar en låg kostnad GIT datainsamling teknik som är liknande och ett bidrag till vägunderhåll Data Acquisition System (ROMDAS). Den består av ett fordon, två digitala videokameror, 2 GPS-mottagare och en bärbar dator. Två olika videokameror som används för jämförelser (en riktig färg och den andra en modifierad konsument kamera för att registrera infraröd) är monterade på framsidan av fordonet med hjälp av en hemmagjord gyro montering. GPS-mottagare placeras på instrumentbrädan i fordonet. Den bärbara datorn och GPS-mottagare är konfigurerade för att registrera fordonets position när den rör sig. GPS-loggfiler behålla inspelningar av latitud, longitud, tid, hastighet och höjd av fordonets position som forskaren annotates en karta dokument i ArcGIS 9.3 mjukvaran med detaljer läge källhänvisningar och olika attribut väg. Denna uppgiftsinsamling teknik syftar till att utsätta potential geografisk informationsteknik (Gits) att utföra inventering av de vägförhållanden. Den tagna uppgifter kan vara användbara för en mängd olika tillämpningar som är relevanta för väg-inventering och underhåll. Det är i grunden rekommenderas för preliminär vägunderhåll diagnos som på djupet vägen analys kan fortsätta för de drabbade vägavsnitt. Med denna teknik är det möjligt att kartlägga vägarna märken och annan arkitektur längs vägen och tillhandahålla en karta direkt i slutet av undersökningen. Sammanfattningsvis, för data mining av rumsliga videon databaser underlätta rutin och periodiskt underhåll beslut och möjlighet att ändra konsumenternas kameror för forskningsändamål rekommenderas.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines Sustainable Community Development (SCD) in the context of the Baltic Sea Region. The research focuses on understanding a model for SCD piloted in Robertsfors, Sweden. The model is said to be transferable to any community around the world. This study seeks to understand the concepts and tools used in the Robertsfors Model. It also examines whether the model is strategic with regards to sustainability and whether it is successful in engaging the local community around these issues. Considerations for transferability are also addressed, focusing specifically on the Eastern Baltic Sea Region. Opportunities for improving the model are also studied. A combination of secondary research, in the form of literature review and primary research (structured interviews and questionnaires) was used to explore these questions. Propositions about SCD and questions for further research emerged from this study.

    Conclusion: Converting in steam power plant is one of many ways to produce electrical energy in the world. It can be done in any country because it can be done with different chemical sources. In Saudi Arabia we use oil, because it easier and cheaper than any other chemical source for us. As any country would use what is better for them. The thesis has described circulation system in Shoaiba power plant by converting chemical energy to thermal energy in the boiler, then the turbine converts thermal energy to mechanical energy. Then the mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy in the generator. The advantages of the steam stations are as follows: production of high amounts of electrical energy from small amounts of fuel, low cost of the initial costs, obstetrics and maintenance costs are not high, the station does not need much space to build and they are usually high capacity. The disadvantages of steam stations are the following: environmental pollution, low efficiency, requires very big amounts of cooling water, and these stations must be built away from population areas.

    People shape the development of our society and the majority of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Given these circumstances, there is high value in supporting municipalities in their transition towards sustainability. Municipalities have the opportunity to engage directly with the general public by utilizing a participatory approach in planning and decision making. This thesis explores the conditions that enable and hinder municipalities from (i) engaging with the public and (ii) achieving effective and meaningful participation from their citizens. The findings of this study were incorporated into the Ideal Case for Strategic Integrated System Development (SISD), an outline for participatory and cross-sectoral planning towards sustainability in cities and nations. The research focused on developing the elements of engagement and participation in the Ideal Case for SISD, thereby adding depth to the suggested planning process and making it more relevant for engagement and sustainability practitioners.

    This master thesis ”Urban Mobility in the 21st Century” gives an insight into the challenges that come with car usage in today’s society. Even though decision makers are trying to encourage people to use other means of transport, the car is still the predominant choice of transport for many people. With this thesis I have tried to answer the question of why people generally prefer to commute and travel by car instead of using public commuting systems. The answers to this question are many. Different scientists have given their view of why people generally prefer to travel by car. One of the explanations is given by Zygmunt Bauman. He argues that we live in a society that demands consumption of both travel and merchandise as well as experiences. In this the car becomes the ultimate choice of transport, due to its apparent sense of speed, flexibility and safety. This appealing sense of speed, flexibility and safety also partly explains why people prefer to use the car, instead of public commuting systems. The society we live in today is complex with many activities spanning a wide geographical area, giving the car many advantages both in flexibility and speed. The decision makers in the European Commission, the Swedish government and the British government have tried to handle this usage of the car in different ways, sometimes by encouragement in using other means of transport, and other times by hard measures like road pricing or increased tax on petroleum. When analyzing these different methods and comparing with the dominating theories on urban mobility, I found that some methods are more successful than others and also that certain methods can have side effects that are less desirable.

    Human misuse of environmental assets especially energy is causing environmental degradation, which hampers social and economic welfare for present as well as for future generations. A worldwide shift to sustainable energy sources is one of the required actions to solve the problem. Electricity from sustainable energy sources is called green electricity and has arose as one of the most motivating tools for developing the sustainable energy market. This has resulted in the restructuring of Germany's energy industry with a dramatic change in energy use in electricity. The change has been aided by the German renewable energies act (EEG), which is been criticized for its resulting high green electricity prices which consumers have to pay. Green electricity prices seem to call for more consumers' attention than threats posed by conventional energy because only a small fraction of energy is sold as green electricity neccesitating the rethinking of the energy market. Due to the need for future research on more factors influencing consumers buying behavior in the green electricity market, this thesis seeks to investigate the following research questions: Is green electricity price the major influencing factor for its market unattractivess? Does the concern about price really calls for more attention than environmental concerns? It specifically aims to describe German consumers' perceptions of factors influencing their green electricity buying behavior. The research methodology involves the use of secondary and primary data. The secondary data gives a background knowledge of Germany and its energy historical development, Germany's sustainable energy strategies and strategies for market development (electricity feed-in-tariffs, the renewable energy act and problems), green electricity marketing, consumers' purchasing behavior and factors influencing this behavior. The primary data is gotten through a questionnare survey and analysed using both excel and the statistical package for social sciences. Evidence is taken from Germany because of its ambitious goals of 20-30% green electricity by 2020 and 80-100% by 2050. The result of the study shows that, although price is the most influencing factor in choosing an electricity supplier and also calls for more attention than environmental concerns, it's not the major hindering factor for the green electricity market unattractivess. Most German electricity consumers (42%) have no idea about green electricity prices. In comparison to competitors, 27% of them assume the prices are higher while 31% say the prices are thesame and even lower. All green electricity consumers confirm the prices are moderate and even cheaper. Even when prices are the same, most respondents gave other reasons like conviniences before environmental friendliness as the first motive for their electricity choice. Despite Germany's ambitous goals, consumers selfinterest and ignorance about green electricity prices remain a problem for the market.

    Abstract [en]

    The global food system plays a significant role in the sustainability challenge. One way to approach such a complex problem is to provide a science-based, functional definition of success, and then to find leverage points in the system that can force change. Because they are accessed by all children, we see food education and responsibly sourced school food as such leverage points.

    Farm-to-School is a US concept which encourages schools to provide classroom food education, a garden, and locally produced food in the school restaurant. We explored how the Farm-to-School concept might move the Swedish public-school system, in a strategic way, towards sustainability, using the municipality of Karlskrona as an example.

    We interviewed stakeholders in Karlskrona to understand the current system, and what the benefits of Farm-to-School and the obstacles to implementation might be. We also interviewed stakeholders in the US, to gain knowledge about their experience of Farm-toSchool.

    We found that in Karlskrona there are some initiatives but restrictive regulations hindered innovation and local procurement, insufficient leadership meant there was no unified vision to work towards, collaboration was absent and not encouraged, and there was a shortage of resources. We therefore do not advise implementing Farm-to-School at present.

    Abstract [en]

    Considering the lack of clear guidance regarding the way business could include social sustainability into their operations, the objective of this research project was to study the functionality of social sustainability tools which are used worldwide by business practitioners and assess how useful these tools are to overcome barriers related with social aspects of sustainability as they are described in the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD): health, influence, competence, impartiality and meaning-making. A qualitative method analysis was selected, based upon direct content analysis. Elements from the 5 Level Framework (5LF) and the FSSD were used for designing two review processes to analyse selected social sustainability tools. The 5LF is useful for planning in complex systems, while the FSSD is designed to address complex challenges and recognize opportunities which aim to sustainability. The findings from the research show which tools, based on their functionality, can help a company move towards sustainability and illustrate how they address different social sustainability aspects. Based on these findings, recommendations were developed which included key features of the selected social sustainability tools. These recommendations could help business practitioners to choose the most appropriate tool for specific business context depending on the company’s needs.

    Transport Planning and Sustainability: The Via Baltica Case2009Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)

    Road transport is most commonly used out of other modes in terms of freight and passenger transportation on local and regional levels. For European citizens it is a primary mean of their access to services, social activities and employment. The scope of road infrastructure differs in some regions. The major disparity appears when the East of Europe is compared with the West. Actions to link periphery with the core of Europe are being continuously performed, what in this case represents itself in constructing Pan-European Transport Corridors, which will contribute to the connection of the whole territory of Europe. The Via Baltica, chosen as a case for this thesis, is a route to connect Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas, Budzisko and Warsaw. It is the common initiative of Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. In addition, it is to be an express road and part of the I Pan-European Transport Corridor, which is going to connect Baltic countries with the West and South part of Europe. We focus on presenting how the Via Baltica is introduced in official documents and compare it with the process in practice. Our final goal is to assess the planning process of the Via Baltica route in Poland according to top down planning approaches and sustainability criteria. We are trying to find out what are the advantages and disadvantages of the ongoing process. After introducing results of the analysis made for the Via Baltica by Polish experts, we present how stakeholders and local authorities try to reinforce the process, regardless of environmental issues, to achieve economic and social profits. As the result we try find out how are the dimensions of sustainable development handled in the Via Baltica case in Poland. The conclusions are based on our findings concerning several conflicts which appeared during the planning process. They are also based on one-dimension as well as multi-criteria analyses.
