Conflicts in Information Ecosystems2001Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The main topic of this thesis concerns the study of how conflicting interests of software agents within an information ecosystem may cause cooperative behavior. Since such agents act on the behalf of their human owners, which often act in their own interest, this will sometimes result in malignant acts. Different types of models, often inspired by biological theories such as natural selection, will be used to describe various aspects of such information ecosystems. We begin by adopting a game theoretic approach where a generous and greedy model is introduced. Different agent strategies for iterated games are compared and their ability to cooperate in conflicting games are evaluated in simulation experiments. The conclusion is that games like the chicken game favor more complex and generous strategies whereas in games like the prisoner’s dilemma, the non-generous strategy tit-for-tat often is the most successful. We then use models based on a surplus value concept to explain antagonistic group formations. The focus is on systems that consist of exploiter agents and agents being exploited. A dynamic protection model of access control is proposed, where a chain of attacks and countermeasures concerning the access are measured. This process can be described as an arms race. It is argued that arms race is a major force in the interaction between antagonistic agents within information ecosystems. Examples of this are given in several contexts such as peer-to-peer tools concerning anonymity and non-censorship, using agents for sending or filtering out mass distributed advertisement e-mails, and finally for describing the fight against viruses or spywares.

The Tragedy of the Commons: Arms Race Within Peer-to-Peer Tools2001Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The two major concerns about peer-to-peer are anonymity and non-censorship of documents. Music industry has highlighted these questions by forcing Napster to filter out copyright protected MP3 files and taking legal actions against local users by monitoring their stored MP3 files. Our investigation shows that when copyright protected files are filtered out, users stop downloading public music as well. The success of a distributed peer-to-peer system is dependent on both cooperating coalitions and an antagonistic arms race. An individual will benefit from cooperation if it is possible to identify other users and the cost for managing services is negligible. An arms race between antagonistic participants using more and more refined agents is a plausible outcome. Instead of “the tragedy of the common” we are witnessing “the tragedy of arms race within the common”. Arms race does not need to be a tragedy because these new tools developed or actions taken against too selfish agents may improve the peer-to-peer society.

Identification and evaluation of security activities in agile projects2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We compare four high-profile waterfall security-engineering processes (CLASP, Microsoft SDL, Cigital Touchpoints and Common Criteria) with the available preconditions within agile processes. Then, using a survey study, agile security activities are identified and evaluated by practitioners from large companies, e.g. software and telecommunication companies. Those activities are compared and a specific security engineering process is suggested for an agile process setting that can provide high benefit with low integration cost.

Software Security Analysis: Execution Phase Audit2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Code revision of a leading telecom product was performed, combining manual audit and static analysis tools. On average, one exploitable vulnerability was found for every 4000 lines of code. Half of the located threats in the product were buffer overflows followed by race condition, misplaced trust, and poor random generators. Static analysis tools were used to speed up the revision process and to integrate security tests into the overall project process. The discussion analyses the effectiveness of automatic tools for auditing software. Furthermore, the incorporation of the software security analysis into the development process, and the results and costs of the security analysis is discussed. From the initial 42 workdays used for finding all vulnerabilities, approximately 16 days were needed for finding and correcting 91,5 % of the vulnerabilities. So, proportionally small investments improve the program code security by integrating an automatic auditing tool into the ordinary execution of source code revision.

Security Analysis of the Swedish Road User Charging System2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A security analysis based on probabilities, consequences and costs resulted in a priority ranking for physical, logical and human threats for the proposed Swedish road user charging system using a smartcard solution. Countermeasures are described as top prioritized, highly prioritized, average prioritized and low prioritized and compared to operational errors. Logical countermeasures like encryption and local buffering are most cost efficient to implement and different human threats are most difficult to deal with. In the end a security solution based on dynamical safety mechanisms is suggested.

A biological View on Information Ecosystems2001Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

When comparing information ecosystems to biological ecosystems, it becomes clear that both types of systems seem to support robust solutions that are hard to violate for a single agent. In the analysis of information ecosystems, it is important to take into consideration that agents may have a Machiavellian intelligence, i.e., that they take the self-interest of other agents into consideration. We conclude that in the interaction between antagonistic agents within information systems, arms race is a major force. A positive result of this is a better readiness for innocent agents against the vigilant agents. Some examples are given to show how the modelling of information ecosystems in this way can explain the origin of more robust systems when antagonistic agents are around.

Surplus Values in Information Ecosystems2002In: International Journal of Information Technology and Decision Making, ISSN 0219-6220 , Vol. 1, no 3, p. 559-571Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A model of surplus values within information ecosystems is presented. The model is based on the classical definition of surplus value. However, as this definition was developed within a manufacturing industry context, some modifications are necessary to adopt it to the context of information ecosystems, e.g. by taking into account that products are "virtual" rather than physical. Just as in agent-based computational economics, here the economics is modelled as evolving systems of autonomous interacting agents in an evolutionary framework. In this way the resulting model is able to capture more dynamic scenarios. The model is formally specified in terms of price, profit, and group gaining functions and is applied to some examples of societies of selfish agents in antagonistic groups to illustrate its dynamic properties. Moreover, the paper show how the model builds upon labour theory of value and contrasts it to consumer value models.

Security Aspects on Inter-Organizational Cooperation Using Wrapper Agents2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The significance of electronic information exchange in interorganizational cooperation is well-known. We will here focus on the particular requirements of SMEs. We describe a general “wrapper agent” solution based on open source freeware that makes it possible (in principle) for any business system to exchange information with any other business system. It has been successfully applied in a pilot study involving two companies in a transport chain using different business systems. We also suggest further improvements by addressing security and privacy issues as well as an extended, possibly dynamic, set of involved companies and higher levels of cooperation.

    Abstract [en]

Interacting agents of exploiters and users within an information ecosystem may be regarded both as biological beings and as part of an economic system of infohabitants. A protection system can be implemented as a filter governing the access to assets. Typically we will have a chain of attacks and countermeasures concerning this access to the desired assets. We model this process as an arms race. We base our model on a process model of a protection system based on exposure time. A user's reaction against an exploiter measure could either be a direct response to the measure or an attempt to anticipate future attacks by more general means of defeating the protection of the exploiter agent. When anticipating future attacks and countermeasures, both users and exploiters will improve their methods and tools due to an arms race. Our arms race model refines the competition as modeled in computational markets to model aspects which typically arise when societies grow beyond what can be controlled in a centralized manner. A dynamic, evolving and robust ecosystem of autonomous agents is sometimes a preferred and possible outcome of the arms race as a hardening process.

The rise and fall of Napster-an evolutionary approach2001Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper addresses dynamics in information ecosystems due to competition between selfish agents to get control of protectable resources. In our case study we investigate the first arms race on Internet triggered by the Napster introduction of an easy to use service for sharing files with music content among users. We set up a model for investigation of possible scenarios emerging from the Napster and Gnutella peer-to-peer tools for information sharing. We also introduce a formal model for analyzing the Napster scenario in the cases of selfish or altruistic users. The prediction provided by our model is in line with what really happened in the Napster case. The model also shows that the outcome was indeed unavoidable if we have selfish users.

An evolutionary view of collective intelligence2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on the question "How can people and computers be connected so that - collectively - they act more intelligently than any individuals, groups, or computers have ever done before?" we propose an evolutionary approach. From this point of view, there are of course fundamental differences between man and machine. Where one is artificial, the other is natural, and where the computer needs to process, the brain must adapt. We propose the use of culturally inherited units, i.e., memes, for describing collective knowledge storage. Like the genes, memes have the ability to be inherited to the next generation. Genes appear independently of our society while memes are a result of our cultural development. The concept of collective intelligence may involve a new kind of meme, entirely emerging within the intersection between man and machine, i.e., outside the scope of human control. The challenge is to model this behavior without overriding constraints within basic evolutionary vs. machine settings.

Om säkerhet i digitala ekosystem2012Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

On Contamination in Information Ecosystems2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

On the Internet, digitally active small and medium sized enterprises (SME) face numerous security risks. When SMEs join networks, business ideas and malicious activities may interfuse. E-mail marketing, remote control and information gathering are replaced by spam, virulent programs and spyware. In this paper, we use the concepts of information ecosystems to describe a security model where, as a background, humans are presumed to act as Machiavellian beings, i.e., behaving selfishly. Based on this notion, we analyse behaviours initiated by network contaminants and their effects to an entire ecosystem. The contribution of this paper is the security model, which permits a comprehensive view on the risk environment in virtual networks (like the digital SME community).

The concepts of information ecosystems and multi agent systems are used to describe a security consistency model where, as a background, humans are presumed to act as Machiavellian beings, i.e. behaving selfishly. Based on this notion, we analyze behaviors initiated by network contaminants derived from the groupings marketing, espionage and malice, and their effects to an entire ecosystem. The contribution of this paper is a security consistency model, which illustrates a comprehensive and systemic view of the evolutionary risk environment in information networks.

Generous and greedy strategies1999In: Complexity International, ISSN 1320-0682, Vol. 6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We introduce generous, even-matched, and greedy strategies ÊÊas concepts for analyzing games. A two person prisoner's dilemma Êgame is described by the four outcomes (C,D), (C,C), (D,C), and (D,D). In a generous strategy the proportion of (C,D) is larger than that of (D,C), i.e. the probability of facing a defecting agent is larger than the probability of defecting. An even-matched strategy has the (C,D) proportion approximately equal to that of (D,C). A greedy strategy is an inverted generous strategy. The basis of the partition is that it is a zero-sum game given that the sum of the proportions of strategies (C,D) must equal that of (D,C). In a population simulation, we compare the prisoner's dilemma (PD) game with the chicken game Ê(CG), given complete as well as partial knowledge of the rules for moves in the other strategies. In a traffic intersection example, we expected a co-operating generous strategy to be successful when the cost for collision was high in addition to the presence of uncertainty. The simulation indeed showed that a generous strategy was successful in the CG part, in which agents faced uncertainty about the outcome. If the resulting zero-sum game is changed from a PD game to a CG, or if the noise level is increased, it will favor generous strategies rather than an even-matched or greedy strategies.

Differences between the iterated Prisoner´s dilemma and the Chicken game under noisy conditions.2002Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The prisoner's dilemma has evolved into a standard game for analyzing the success of cooperative strategies in repeated games. With the aim of investigating the behavior of strategies in some alternative games we analyzed the outcome of iterated games for both the prisoner's dilemma and the chicken game. In the chicken game, mutual defection is punished more strongly than in the prisoner's dilemma, and yields the lowest fitness. We also ran our analyses under different levels of noise. The results reveal a striking difference in the outcome between the games. Iterated chicken game needed more generations to find a winning strategy. It also favored nice, forgiving strategies able to forgive a defection from an opponent. In particular the well-known strategy tit-for-tat has a poor successrate under noisy conditions. The chicken game conditions may be relatively common in other sciences, and therefore we suggest that this game should receive more interest as a cooperative game from researchers within computer science.

Describing Cryptobiosis as a Time Based Protection System Using Petri Nets2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cryptobiosis represents the state of a living organism when it shows no visible signs of metabolic life, but maintains a capacity to return to an active, metabolic state. This peculiar state, although known from a wide variety of organisms, has received little attention from a theoretically biological perspective. A description based on a Petri net setting and a time based security model is proposed. In order to protect against a prolonged exposure time, the pathways for chemical reactions involved must fulfil their actions during a limited detection and response time to fulfil the protected state of entering/leaving cryptobiosis.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the transfer pricing system at Blekingesjukhuset in Karlskrona. Method This essay is a case study on the transfer pricing system at Blekingesjukhuset in Karlskrona. To be able to make a rather broad evaluation our empirical material consists of interviews with division managers and controllers as well as the hospitals´ finance manager. In order to simplify the presentation of the results of this study and the investigation, as such, we have created a model for evaluation based on the information gathered in our interviews. Results The results show that the hospitals´ purpose using a transfer pricing system is to create cost-consciousness among its employees and in that way reduce the internal consumption of health care services. Furthermore the results prove several weaknesses in the structure of the transfer pricing system, but also in the manner of which the system has been implemented and how it is supervised. This resulting in difficulties achieving the systems´ intended purpose or goals. Thus, the imprints or the effects using the transfer pricing system have been small.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

Dokumentärfilmproduktion ur ett ljudtekniskt experimentellt perspektiv2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This paper is a study of documentary film production with focus on the filmmakers choice and usage of sound equipment. Using professional articles and literature have first of all helped us determine a standard for the conventional use of sound equipment in documentary film. Afterwards, by analyzing our own interviews we’ve received answers on how filmmakers relate to the conventional usage and why they select equipment as they do. Thereafter, we describe a technical method which helps a filmmaker to be able to record sound for documentary film on his/her own, using simple measures without reducing quality. A production in the form of a short documentary film has then been recorded using this method to ascertain what challenges a simplified equipment could bring.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A practical approach toward architectures for open computational systems2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

By means of a systemic approach toward analysis and design of complex systems, we introduce the issue of implementing open computational systems on service-oriented architectures. We start by studying general systems theory, as it accounts for analysis and modeling of complex systems, and then compare three different implementation strategies toward system implementation. As such, the comparison is grounded in the notion of supporting architectures and, more specifically, in the practical case of a service-oriented layered architecture for communicating entities (SOLACE).

Sustainability and service-oriented systems in network-centric environments2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our modern information society provides us with a tremendous amount of information. Several issues have surfaced due to the complexity inherent in the handling of the information systems. One of the most important issues is that of providing an architecture and methodology that provide for the development and maintenance of complex, distributed information systems. As the information flow and quantity hinders us from having qualitative information when needed, the architecture must address the reach, richness and value of the information. Network-centric warfare is a problem domain that has been initiated to meet the power of information. To be able to support such continouos sustainability, a robust network infrastructure is critical. A systemic perspective on network-centric environments as well as a technical perspective on network-centric environment shows that, although promising, contemporary implementations having a service-oriented architecture lack support for physical scalability and a cognitive decoupling that would provide for multiple users acting on the same environment. Consequently, a service-oriented layered architecture for communicating entities is presented where these issues are addressed. For verification, a demonstrator is developed upon a service-oriented layered architecture for communicating based on a network-centric warfare scenario.

    Abstract [sv]

Title Loyalty – Is it possible to preserve after an outsourcing Authors Joacim Carlsson och Fredrik Thanche Supervisor Marie Aurell Department School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course Bachelor’s thesis in Business Administration, 10 credits Purpose Our purpose is to investigate what affects the loyalty in the outsourcing process. We will also look how the outsourcing company can improve the process to keep the former employees loyal after the outsourcing process. Method The investigation is a qualitative study. We have examined two companies that have outsourced any part of the company for two or three years ago. This means that the outsourcing took place between 2001 and 2002. Five persons were interviewed. We will make the conclusions based upon their experience. Results We have in our study reached the following results. To be able to maintain the loyalty after an outsourcing, the outsourcing company is required to communicate well with their employees. It’s also of importance to inform the employees in a satisfying way. If the outsourced personnel understand why they have been outsourced they are more likely to accept it. It’s also important to preserve the commitment between the outsourced personnel and those who weren’t outsourced. This is of great matter when the outsourced personnel still work in the same building as before the outsourcing. The last point we found was that it is important to choose a good outsourcing partner. To find a good, new employer for the former employees has also a great effect on their loyalty.

Glöm inte partnern vid expatriering!2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Do not forget the spouse at the expatriation! The purpose of this essay is to investigate the spouse perspective of an expatriation and his/her own adaptation process in order to identify adjustment factors for spouses. The essay is a qualitative method, since the purpose was to gain a deeper understanding of the accompanying spouse adjustment process. Four people were interviewed on four different factors, personality, family, work and help to adapt. Furthermore, two more persons were interviewed working on Relocation Services at a large international company. The results show that the above factors play a major role in the spouse adjustment. Important features of the personalities are openness, responsiveness, flexibility and being a problem solver. Family communication and what age the children have also played into how well the partner adapts. Preparatory training in the form of cultural training, language training and awareness adaptation curve for accompanying partners. Support for relocation like mentoring and support for employment had significant impact on how well the partner adapts to the new country.

Kognition och nutritionsstatus hos äldre i Blekinge2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Urbanitet i halvperifera delar av staden2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Infartslederna skär långt in i städerna och splittrar upp staden i isolerade delar.

    Abstract [sv]

Ystad hamn i förändring2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Volatilitetens påverkan på företag inom IT/telekom2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Assessing Community Contributions to Sustainable Food Systems2020Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Evidence suggests that food and dietary adjustments at the community level can make positive contributions to globally sustainable food systems (SFS), which have reciprocal impacts on quality-of-life factors such as food security and nutritional health. Assessing such contributions has two central challenges: 1) a lack of methods that support alignment between communities and across scales, balanced against the need to involve the community in developing relevant indicators; and 2) the absence of adequate, fine grained data relevant to the community. Purpose: Addressing these two challenges, this paper builds on a local-to-global approach to engaging communities in SFS development and illustrates using a community case study with Canadian dietitians (a professional community). Methods: Researchers used the Delphi Inquiry method, guided by the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, to address the first challenge, together with causal loop diagrams informed by the Cultural Adaptation Template to address the second. Results: Indicators were developed for dietitian-identified contributions to SFS. Modeling indicator interactions showed how some actions are reinforcing a professional paradigm, as well as priority areas for action and measurement. Conclusions: The methods used were a good fit for addressing the two central challenges guiding this work. Procedural guidelines are proposed that are adaptable to different community settings. Further, results highlighted that cultural paradigms are a driving force of change, dietitians have a strategic role in SFS development, and facilitating SFS literacy among RDs generates positive feedback loops that can amplify adaptations for, and positive contributions to, broader SFS development.

Conceptualizing and Assessing Sustainable Food Systems and Diets: A Review2020Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To synthesize research conceptualizing and measuring sustainable food systems (SFS) and diets and discusses the results from the perspective of supporting community level participation in global SFS. Design: Researchers conducted a narrative review of the literature, structured results into emergent categories and themes, and analyzed against known challenges to community level measurement. Results: Concepts defining SFS fall into the following broad approaches: visionary, multidimensional, resilience and parametres. Within these, common categories and emergent themes are reported. Assessment of SFS and diets can be grouped into three general approaches: multidimensional progress reporting, composite scores, and vulnerability assessments. Assessment is challenged by data gaps, especially at the community level, making community engagement in broader global goals elusive. Conclusions: Results contribute to SFS theory by suggesting a need to further develop existing parametres concepts, which set out system limits and principled approaches to governing those systems and show promise for assessment in the absence of adequate data. Future research directions might explore parametres approaches for supporting community level contributions to SFS in a way that demonstrates local-to-global alignment. These will be relevant to practitioners in nutrition, public health and community development, who are well-positioned to facilitate such work.

Inviting Community into the Development of Globally Sustainable Food Systems2019Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Food systems and human diets contribute to unsustainable socioecological conditions, which in turn negatively affect human health. These driver-impact relationships span multiple scales, prompting international governance bodies, nations, and communities alike to grapple with solutions for a better food future. Collaborative action across scales and sectors is necessary; however, how communities can align contributions with efforts at broader scales is unclear.

The aim of this research is to develop theoretical and procedural supports for community engagement in globally sustainable food systems (SFS), and to provide concrete results relevant to one case community.

The community of nutrition and dietetics professionals was chosen as the case community given its history of engagement with SFS, its integration throughout food system sectors, and because dietary shifts have significant potential to contribute to SFS. Furthermore, the researcher’s position as a member of this community supported the case study work.

The research uses transdisciplinary methods guided by the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) and Community Development theory. The FSSD provides a concrete definition of sustainability and includes methodological supports for co-creation of sustainability transitions. Community Development theory supports participatory approaches and welcomes different knowledge cultures in such co-creation. The Delphi Inquiry method was used to facilitate data collection and community engagement. For measurement-specific elements of the research, causal loop diagrams (CLD) informed by the Cultural Adaptation Template (CAT) theory were used, and Critical Dietetics was used as a framework for dietetics-specific analysis.

High level insights include that: (i) participatory and multidimensional approaches are important to facilitate community engagement in SFS development; (ii) objective parametres for defining sustainability are critical to guide concerted action and can provide an innovation space that invites creative and diverse solutions within; (iii) systems thinking and related tools help simplify the complexity of food systems without disregarding broader context, and support assessment in the absence of all data. Specifically in relation to the case community explored, insights include that, (i) integrating an SFS lens into existing roles and activities is important, because dietitians already work across sectors and scales, making them well positioned to contribute in diverse ways; (ii) a shared language based on transdisciplinary understandings of SFS is required; (iii) engaging in activities that facilitate SFS knowledge development within the profession, prior to integrating it into roles and activities, is an important first step; (iv) collaborative and reflexive approaches to continued knowledge development and practice are important, such that in the end sustainability becomes integrated into a cultural way of thinking about food.

Based on these insights, this dissertation outlines a procedure for collaborative community work for globally SFS. The procedure is adaptable to various community settings. The dissertation also provides specific guidance for how dietitians could utilise their strategic positions throughout food systems to contribute to SFS development.

How Can Dietitians Leverage Change for Sustainable Food Systems in Canada2019In: Canadian journal of dietetic practice and research, ISSN 1486-3847, Vol. 80, no 4, p. 164-171Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: In this paper, we begin to set out language defining sustainablefood systems (SFS) in Canada, through the voices of dietitians, andidentify leverage points where dietitians can affect change. Methods: Dietitians of Canada members were invited to a Delphi Inquiryprocess; questions explored a vision of SFS in Canada, barriers to thatvision, and actions. Results were independently analysed by 2 membersof the research team who used the Framework for Strategic SustainableDevelopment to structure the data. Results: Fifty-eight members participated. The resultant vision describesa future food system in 15 thematic areas of the social and ecologicalsystems. Barriers are described according to how they undermine sustainability.High-leverage actions areas included: (i) facilitating knowledgedevelopment within the profession and public, (ii) influencing organizationalpolicy to support SFS, and (iii) and influencing public policy.Approaches to such action included: (i) facilitating cross-sectoral collaborationand (ii) applying reflexive approaches. Conclusions: This research suggests a multidimensional understandingof food systems sustainability among dietitians. The vision provides somelanguage to describe what dietitians mean by SFS and can be used as acompass point to orient action. Action areas and approaches have thepotential to drive systemic change while avoiding unintendedconsequences.

Food system sustainability across scales: A proposed local-to-global approach to community planning and assessment2017In: Sustainability, ISSN 2071-1050, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 9, no 6, article id 1061Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Interest in food systems sustainability is growing, but progress toward them is slow. This research focuses on three interrelated challenges that hinder progress. First, prevailing visions lack a concrete definition of sustainability. Second, global level conceptions fail to guide responses at the local level. Third, these deficiencies may lead to conflicting initiatives for addressing sustainable food systems at the community level that slow collective progress. The purpose of this article is to (1) describe the development of a framework for assessing food system sustainability which accommodates local-level measurement in the context of broader national and global scale measures; and (2) to propose a process that supports community determinacy over localized progress toward sustainable food systems. Using a modified Delphi Inquiry process, we engaged a diverse, global panel of experts in describing "success" with respect to sustainable food systems, today's reality, and identifying key indicators for tracking progress towards success. They were asked to consider scale during the process in order to explore locally relevant themes. Data were analyzed using the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) to facilitate a comprehensive and systematic exploration of key themes and indicators. Key results include a framework of indicator themes that are anchored in a concrete definition of sustainability, stable at national and global scales while remaining flexible at the local scale to accommodate contextual needs. We also propose a process for facilitating community-level planning for food system sustainability that utilizes this indicator framework. The proposed process is based on insights from the research results, as well as from previous research and experience applying the FSSD at a community level; it bears promise for future work to support communities to determine their own pathways, while contributing to a more coordinated whole. © 2017 by the author.

Critical Dietetics and Sustainable Food Systems2019In: Critical Dietetics and Critical Nutrition Studies / [ed] John Coveney, Sue Booth, Springer, 2019, p. 97-115Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, we invite readers to consider a food system that is based on values where individual health, the health of the society (social system) and ecosystem health are of equal importance. With this as a lens, there is a clear need to move beyond the biosciences to consider transdisciplinary approaches as important for nutrition and dietetics in today and tomorrow’s reality. This chapter begins by briefly highlighting historical engagement of the nutrition and dietetics community with food system sustainability, before moving to define foundational concepts of sustainability in food systems and diets, from a systems perspective. It then provides some examples of how some of today’s pressing nutritional challenges are sustainability challenges and examples of the interface between today’s dietetics and food system sustainability. This chapter ends with a discussion on the role of nutrition and dietetic practitioners in food system sustainability and the needs and challenges for dietetic education to support that role.

School Gardens: Cultivating Food Security in Nova Scotia Public Schools?2016In: Canadian journal of dietetic practice and research, ISSN 1486-3847, Vol. 77, no 3, p. 119-124Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: A small but growing body of peer-reviewed research suggests that school gardens can play a role in building community food security (CFS); however, to date little research exploring the role of school gardens in supporting CFS is available. This paper begins to address this gap in the literature. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory, single-case study design was used. The focus of this case study was the school food garden at an elementary school in the River Valley, Nova Scotia, school community. Results: Results provide useful information about potential CFS effects of school gardens in addition to the environmental effects on school gardens important to their effectiveness as CFS tools. Findings suggest children gained food-related knowledge, skills, and values that support long-term CFS. A local social and political landscape at the community, provincial, and school board level were key to strengthening this garden's contributions to CFS. Conclusions: We support Dietitians of Canada's nomination of school gardens as an indicator of CFS with theoretical and practical evidence, underscore the importance of a supportive environment, and need for further research in this area. Health professionals and community organizations provide critical support, helping to weave gardens into a greater movement towards building CFS.

SHARED SPACE: Att få rum i staden2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
