Vem styr mitt arbete? Förändrade arbetsuppgifter vid datorisering av körschema2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Abstract This report is our bachelor thesis. Our work has taken place at a galvanising company in Sölvesborg. The company faced major changes, of which one was a computerisation process. The new system could involve changes in work practice and in specific tasks, affecting the workers. If the coming system was to support work, from the production personnel?s perspective, we felt a legitimate participation in the development and design of the future work practice, was a requirement that was not met. During our ethnographical studies we noted that conflicts arose between production and administrative -personnel. We investigated the conflicts closer in our pursuit to find what caused them. In that work we used various methods such as Future workshop and Brainstorming. Together with production personnel we identified information and functions that are vital in their work. Also, we tried to understand what impact these aspects had on different tasks, and to find an answer to the question, could computers support the production personnel in their work? To find an answer to this question, we have in depth, studied them and closely followed their daily work. We reason about the existing work practice, and possible scenarios in the future. We describe what we find to be important to consider when introducing computers to the workplace. The report also presents a possible draft, a sketch to design, of the future computer system. All names on individuals and customers have been changed, to conceal their true identity.

Evaluation of quality of life/life satisfaction in women with breast cancer in complementary and conventional care2004In: Acta Oncologica, ISSN 0284-186X, E-ISSN 1651-226X, Vol. 43, no 1, p. 27-34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to study the perceived quality of life/life satisfaction in a sample of women with breast cancer who were treated in a hospital with alternative/complementary care and the same variables in individually matched patients who received only conventional medical treatment. A non-randomized controlled trial design with repeated measurements was used. Sixty women with breast cancer treated with anthroposophic medicine (ABCW) and 60 with conventional medicine (CBCW) were included and 36 matched pairs took part on all occasions. The quality of life was measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSQ). The comparisons were calculated as effect sizes (ES). The women in the ABCW group reported small or moderate effects, expressed as ES, on their quality of life/life satisfaction compared to their matched "twins'' in the CBCW group at the 1-year follow-up in 15 out of 21 scales/factors. It was concluded that the women who had chosen anthroposophic care increased their perceived quality of life/life satisfaction according to the methodology of the study.

Perceived quality of life and coping for Swedish women with breast cancer who choose complementary medicine2001In: Cancer Nursing, ISSN 0162-220X, E-ISSN 1538-9804, p. 395-401Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study, which is part of a major clinical controlled study of the life situation of women with breast cancer, was to compare two groups of women concerning perceived quality of life and coping. The women were treated in two different cancer treatment programs: complementary treatment, which included anthroposophic therapy, and conventional cancer treatment. A total of 120 women were included, 60 women treated with anthroposophic medicine, and 60 individually matched women treated with conventional medicine only. Quality of life was measured by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, Quality of Life Questionnaire, Core 30, and the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire. Coping was measured by the Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale. The results showed that the women who chose anthroposophic therapy perceived their quality of life to be lower on admission to the hospital and showed more anxious preoccupation than the women in conventional medicine. It can be concluded that, due to the careful matching procedure, the women in the two groups are comparable in a medical sense but not from the perspective of quality of life and coping.

Managerial, Technical and Co-learning: Different Practices in Process Support for Software Development2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Master Thesis looks into software development processes and the work activities these need to support. Hesitation against process support within Software developing organisations combined with a possibility to develop process support for such a company, made the foundation for this thesis. The reference company where the study took place is a large worldwide Telecom company where we focused on one design department with 25 people. Instead of using Participatory Design (PD) [Schuler, Namioka] as a method for Software development as traditionally, we used it for developing process support together with the people at the department. Three different supports for different project processes were created with PD and an evolutionary way of work together with the ?designers?. We came to a complex project environment which required control in several aspects such as project sponsoring, project management, line management, design maintenance etc. We saw a way of working that was following a common agreed way of work by the group that is formed by socio-emotional aspects and co-learning aspects [Hägerfors, 1995]. In contrast to this, the study showed that the available process support and also the use of the process support had a clear concentration towards a management focus ? the control function. The available process support and the use of this did not really consider the aspects of Socio-emotional or Co-learning. Existing process support was built around documents that became evidence for actual activities during the project. The process support developed during this study (by us and the designers) finally also got that concentration. A conclusion is that when the organisation puts high requirements on control of projects, this will also affect the way the organisation wants support for work. This is the missing point.

Anhörigas upplevelse av att vårda en familjemedlem med Alzheimers sjukdom: En litteraturstudie2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Slutsats: Alzheimers sjukdom påverkar anhöriga i många aspekter.

Multi-Timescale Modelling of Ethernet Traffic2003Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Ethernet is one of the most common link layer technologies, used in local area networks, wireless networks and wide area networks. There is however a lack of traffic models for Ethernet that is usable in performance analysis. In this thesis we describe an Ethernet traffic model. The model aims at matching multiple moments of the bit rate at several timescales. To match the model parameters to measured traffic, four methods have been developed and tested on real traffic traces. Once a model has been created, it can be used directly in a fluid flow performance analysis. Our results show that, as the number of sources present on an Ethernet link grows, the model becomes better and less complex.

Delay Performance in IP Routers2004Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The main goals of the paper are towards an understanding of the delay process in best-effort Internet for both non-congested and congested networks. A dedicated measurement system is re-ported for delay measurements in IP routers, which follows specifications of the IETF RFC 2679. The system is using both passive measurements and active probing. Dedicated application-layer software is used to generate UDP traffic with TCP-like characteristics. Pareto traffic models are used to generate self-similar traffic in the link. The reported results are in the form of several impor-tant statistics regarding processing delay of a router, router delay for a single data flow, router delay for more data flows as well as end-to-end delay for a chain of routers. We confirm results reported earlier about the fact that the delay in IP routers is generally influenced by traffic characteristics, link conditions and, at some extent, details in hardware implementation and different IOS releases. The delay in IP routers usually shows heavy-tailed characteristics. It may also occasionally show extreme values, which are due to improper functioning of the routers.

On an Implementation of a Distributed Passive Measurement Infrastructure2003Other (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Having access to relevant, up-to-date measurement data is a key issue for network analysis in order to allow for efficient Internet performance monitoring and management. New applications keep appearing; user and protocol behavior keep evolving; traffic mixes and characteristics are continuously changing, which implies that some year old traffic traces may not reflect reality any more. In order to give a holistic view of what is going on in the network, passive measurements have to be carried out at different places simultaneously. Other challenges relate to the simultaneous use of one specific measurement point at a certain location for different measurement processes, and to continuously ongoing measurements needed for capturing long-term traffic behaviors. On this background, this paper proposes a passive measurement infrastructure for a campus backbone, consisting of distributed coordinated measurement points, collected in measurement areas, measurement administration and data management. … The framework is generic with regards to the capturing equipment, ranging from simple PCAP based devices to high-end DAG cards, and dedicated ASICs, in order to promote a large deployment of measurement points. This structure allows for an efficient use of passive monitoring equipment in order to supply researchers and network managers with up-to-date and relevant data.

Multifractal Products of Stochastic Processes: Fluid Flow Analysis2000Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The consideration of multifractal properties in network traffic has become a well-known issue in network performance evaluation. We analyze the performance of a fluid flow buffer fed by multifractal traffic described by Norros, Mannersalo and Riedi [1]. We describe specific steps in fluid flow analysis, both for finite and infnite buffer sizes, and point out how toovercome numerical problems. We discuss performance results in form of waiting time quantiles and loss probabilities, which help to estimate whether a trffic concentrator constitutes a bottleneck or not.

Matching Multi-Fractal Process Parameters Against Real Data Traffic2002Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recent analyses of real data/internet traffic indicate that data traffic exhibits long-range dependence as well as self-similar or multi-fractal properties. By using mathematical models of Internet traffic that share these properties we can perform analytical studies of network traffic. This gives us an opportunity to analyse potential bottlenecks and estimate delays in the networks. Processes with multi-fractal properties can be modeled by multiplying the output of Markov Modulated Rate Processes (MMRP) [1] each defined by four parameters. The MMRP are easily used in stochastic fluid flow modeling. This model is also suited for analysis of other traffic types e.g. VoIP and thus, it allows for integration of different traffic types, i.e. time-sensitive voice traffic with best-effort data traffic. Using this model we can calculate performance parameters for each individual stream that enters the system/model. In this paper we show how to construct a multi-fractal process that is matched to measured data from MMRP sub processes.

Modelling of Ethernet Traffic on Multiple Timescales2004Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ethernet is one of the most common link layer technologies, used in local area networks, wireless networks and wide area networks. There is however a lack of traffic models for Ethernet that is usable in performance analysis. In this paper we use such a model. The model operates on matching multiple moments of the bit rate at several timescales. In order to match the model parameters to measured traffic, five methods have been developed. We use this to model three different links; the BCpOct89 Bellcore trace, an Internet access link and an ADSL link. Our results show that, as the number of sources present on an Ethernet link grows, the model becomes better and less complex.

Obtaining Reliable Bit Rate Measurements in SNMP-Managed Networks2002Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Simple Network Management Protocol, SNMP, is the most widespread standard for Internet management. As SNMP stacks are available on most equipment, this protocol has to be considered when it comes to performance management, traffic engineering and network control. However, especially when using the predominant version 1, SNMPv1, special care has to be taken to avoid erroneous results when calculating bit rates. In this work, we evalute six off-the-shelf network components. We demonstrate that bit rate measurements can be completely misleading if the sample intervals that are used are either too large or too small. We present solutions and work-arounds for these problems. The devices are evaluated with regards to their updating and response behavior.

    Abstract [sv]

Den fysiska dimensionen i regional planering2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Motiverande beslutsfattande: Relationen mellan chefens beslutsfattande och anställdas arbetsmotivation2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how key performance indicators are being used as performance management tools within the production industry. Specifically the purpose is to investigate how the KPI:s within the telecommunications industry drives reusability regarding production test systems. This thesis will also highlight today’s cost models and suggest improvements of the KPI and what new ones could be introduced. A case study at Ericsson AB has been performed. The study has an abductive approach because the study is both based on current theories and hypotheses but also from empirical data. Personal interviews were also conducted at HWDSS, Ericsson AB. The conclusion of this case study is that the management control measurements used today, to some extent creates incentives for modular design with high reusability. However, there is room for improvements, both in order to more clearly show the positive effects with high reusability and to more directly control the activity toward this goal. It’s our belief that better monitoring of the proportion of previous modules/components being used in new designs and to have a target value for this part clearly would promote modular design with high reusability. It’s also important to continuously measure the enablers for the goal and not just follow the implementation of identified key activities. KPI, PI and cost models of the business must always be up to date and pointing in the direction of the business laid strategy.

Personalbefrämjande åtgärder i företagens strategiarbete2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Att bryta den Fjärde Väggen: Metalepsis i spel2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The act of doing something that is called “breaking the fourth wall” in video games, to address the player across the games’ scope, is something that has been in our interest for a long time. To search about the fourth wall and video games on the internet have been futile, until we stumbled upon the term metalepsis. Metalepsis literally means “a jump across”, it originates from narratology and handles how the different levels in a narrative are managed. In this Bachelor Thesis we take a deep dive into the term, with the help of Karin Kukkonen’s and Sonja Klimek’s work, and how it’s used in different medias such as literature, film, music videos and video games. We discovered why metalepsis in video games is an uncharted area with the help of Astrid Ensslin’s and Huaxin Wei’s work, and why studies of narratives in video games are executed in a shallow grade. With our research question we want to contribute with more information about metalepsis in video games and to examine a conscious use of metalepsis in the development of a video game. By surveying metalepsis in video games and other media, we have created an estimate on how it has been used so far and then to applicate the observation to our video game.

This thesis lay it’s focus on a metalepsis called Möbius Strip, that consists of a narrative that restarts within itself. Using Georg Kreisler’s book Der Schattenspringer, we have made an interpretation on how Möbius Strip could work out. We have then developed a video game based on this interpretation and compared the results to the books version of the metalepsis.

What we have gathered with this thesis is more tangible examples of the use of metalepsis in video games so far. We have been able to create a discussion about how our interpretation of Möbius Strip relate to the book, with the help from Sonja Klimek’s description of the metalepsis. We have only managed to scrape the surface on the topic of metalepsis in video games and feel like there are multiple other roads to investigate.

Individens rätt till samhället, Integrering i en uppdelad stad: en undersökning av miljonprogramsområden och individens förutsättningar till deltagande i samhället som helhet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A simple and low cost platform to perform Power Analysis Attacks2012Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Power Analysis Attacks use the fact that power consumption in modern microprocessors and cryptographic devices depends on the instructions executed on them and so, it varies with time. This leak- age is mainly used to deduce cryptographic keys as well as algorithms by direct observation of power traces. Power Analysis is a recent field of study that has been developed for the last decade. Since then, the techniques used have evolved into more complex forms, that some- times require a variety of skills that makes the subject difficult to start with. Nowadays it is changeling to tackle the problem without expen- sive equipment; what is more, the off-the-shelf solutions to do Power Analysis Attacks are rare and expensive. This thesis aim to provide a low cost and open platform as an entry point to Power Analysis for a price under 10 USD. Besides that, it is designed to be able to per- form Simple Power Analysis and Differential Power Analysis attacks to a 8 bit microcontroller, including the software needed to automate the process of taking the measurements. Finally, the platform can be extended to cover a wide range of microcontrollers, microprocessors and cryptographic devices by simple insertion in a bread board, which makes it the perfect device for new comers to the field.

    Abstract [en]

First I could state, that it is very difficult to measure changes in productivity whitin the IT-area. In spite of the difficulties in measuring changes, one person hade succeeded to accomplish more during his working hours as the intranet lead to him being able to change travelling time to working time. Besides this I could state at all respondents gets more information than they need in their respective assignments. The situation is most acute for the people that travels a lot, because they aren?t in contact with the intranets on a daily basis. Many of the users of the intranet choose to take a distance from the intranet rather than being affected by to much information. Not so many of the users sit and search for information, instead if they don?t find the information on the net, they contact someone who they think might have access to the information. They also state that they?ll rather take part of information in group, because the risk of missinterpreting is reduced. The trust in information on the net is low, wich results in choosing to dubble check if they need to make a decision based upon the available information.

Livet efter bröstcancerbehandling: En litteraturstudie om kvinnors upplevelse2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD) Approach for Executing Vision 20502011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

All levels of society, individuals, businesses and governments, must be involved in order to reverse the unsustainable path that society is currently on. Though much has been written about what needs to be done, there is much less literature on how to do it. This study attempts to start filling this gap. This paper is focused on the Vision 2050 report which acknowledges the role businesses have in moving society towards sustainability. The Vision 2050 report which was released by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development explores the current reality business is facing and the opportunities that are available for them to incorporate sustainability into the mainstream of their business. The study examines how businesses can begin to integrate sustainability into their company’s operations and services, using the report for inspiration and the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development as guidance. A suggested approach is presented in the form of an implementation guide, which can be used by business to help them navigate their organization, collaborate with others and to develop an action plan as they work to integrating sustainability into their operations

Strategy and Sustainability Awareness in the Danish Fourth Sector2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The newly emerging Fourth Sector combines a strong social or environmental mission with business practices, and could potentially play a catalysing role in moving society towards sustainability. This thesis explores the extent that Danish social businesses and enterprises are using a strategic sustainable development approach and discusses how such an approach could potentially strengthen their core business. The analytical framework we used is the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, complemented with sector specific elements. To gather our data we conducted twelve semi-structured interviews with Danish social enterprises and businesses, as well as expert interviews. Main findings include that few had both social and environmental goals, that they strategise informally, and few measure their impact. Recommendations to strengthen their core business include incorporating sustainability in their definition of success, making their decision-making framework explicit, and measure and communicate impacts.

The Oil Cisterns of Loudden: Beyond Branding-A Socially Sustainable City2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

What place do historic environments and structures have in cities after their original uses have ceased to have relevance in contemporary urban life? And how does these relate to sustainable city planning, in particular social sustainability? Using the cisterns at the former oil harbour of Loudden, in Stockholm, Sweden as a case study, the purpose of this report is to investigate adaptive reuse strategies and idealogies of the industrial heritage in contemporary cities. These topics are analysed in relation to the prevailing neoliberal planning objectives of branding, economic growth and development and place-making. A critical analysis of the city of Stockholm’s stated sustainability goals reveals a significant disconnect between the technical, economic and environmental sides of sustainability and the equally important social aspects of the term. The overall conclusion is that social sustainability is first and foremost a rhetorical discourse that must be more aggressively pursued as a concrete planning objective and the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage provides a unique opportunity to accomplish this. Furthermore, social, environmental and economic sustainability must be seen as integral and coequal parts to the overarching sustainable ideal. The predominance of economic considerations does not adequately account for the equally crucial aspects of social sustainability such as culture, inclusiveness and integration and historic preservation.

    Abstract [en]

Autoscaling of containers can leverage performance measures from the different layers of the computational stack. This paper investigate the problem of selecting the most appropriate performance measure to activate auto-scaling actions aiming at guaranteeing QoS constraints. First, the correlation between absolute and relative usage measures and how a resource allocation decision can be influenced by them is analyzed in different workload scenarios. Absolute and relative measures could assume quite different values. The former account for the actual utilization of resources in the host system, while the latter account for the share that each container has of the resources used. Then, the performance of a variant of Kubernetes’ auto-scaling algorithm, that transparently uses the absolute usage measures to scale-in/out containers, is evaluated through a wide set of experiments. Finally, a detailed analysis of the state-of-the-art is presented.

    Abstract [en]

Abstract The ICT industry and specifically critical sectors, such as healthcare, transportation, energy and government, require as mandatory the compliance of ICT systems and services with legislation and regulation, as well as with standards. In the era of cloud computing, this compliance management issue is exacerbated by the distributed nature of the system and by the limited control that customers have on the services. Today, the cloud industry is aware of this problem (as evidenced by the compliance program of many cloud service providers), and the research community is addressing the many facets of the legal-rule compliance checking and quality assurance problem. Cloud service brokerage plays an important role in legislation compliance and QoS management of cloud services. In this paper we discuss our experience in designing a legal-rule and QoS-aware cloud service broker, and we explore relate research issues. Specifically we provide three main contributions to the literature: first, we describe the detailed design architecture of the legal-rule and QoS-aware broker. Second, we discuss our design choices which rely on the state of the art solutions available in literature. We cover four main research areas: cloud broker service deployment, seamless cloud service migration, cloud service monitoring, and legal rule compliance checking. Finally, from the literature review in these research areas, we identify and discuss research challenges.

The state-of-the-art in container technologies: Application, orchestration and security2020In: Concurrency and Computation, ISSN 1532-0626, E-ISSN 1532-0634, article id e5668Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Containerization is a lightweight virtualization technology enabling the deployment and execution of distributed applications on cloud, edge/fog, and Internet-of-Things platforms. Container technologies are evolving at the speed of light, and there are many open research challenges. In this paper, an extensive literature review is presented that identifies the challenges related to the adoption of container technologies in High Performance Computing, Big Data analytics, and geo-distributed (Edge, Fog, Internet-of-Things) applications. From our study, it emerges that performance, orchestration, and cyber-security are the main issues. For each challenge, the state-of-the-art solutions are then analyzed. Performance is related to the assessment of the performance footprint of containers and comparison with the footprint of virtual machines and bare metal deployments, the monitoring, the performance prediction, the I/O throughput improvement. Orchestration is related to the selection, the deployment, and the dynamic control of the configuration of multi-container packaged applications on distributed platforms. The focus of this work is on run-time adaptation. Cyber-security is about container isolation, confidentiality of containerized data, and network security. From the analysis of 97 papers, it came out that the state-of-the-art is more mature in the area of performance evaluation and run-time adaptation rather than in security solutions. However, the main unsolved challenges are I/O throughput optimization, performance prediction, multilayer monitoring, isolation, and data confidentiality (at rest and in transit). © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Energy-Aware Adaptation in Managed Cassandra Datacenters2016In: Proceedings - 2016 International Conference on Cloud and Autonomic Computing, ICCAC / [ed] Gupta I.,Diao Y., IEEE, 2016, p. 60-71Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Today, Apache Cassandra, an highly scalable and available NoSql datastore, is largely used by enterprises of each size and for application areas that range from entertainment to big data analytics. Managed Cassandra service providers are emerging to hide the complexity of the installation, fine tuning and operation of Cassandra datacenters. As for all complex services, human assisted management of a multi-tenant cassandra datacenter is unrealistic. Rather, there is a growing demand for autonomic management solutions. In this paper, we present an optimal energy-aware adaptation model for managed Cassandra datacenters that modify the system configuration orchestrating three different actions: horizontal scaling, vertical scaling and energy aware placement. The model is built from a real case based on real application data from Ericsson AB. We compare the performance of the optimal adaptation with two heuristics that avoid system perturbations due to re-configuration actions triggered by subscription of new tenants and/or changes in the SLA. One of the heuristic is local optimisation and the second is a best fit decreasing algorithm selected as reference point because representative of a wide range of research and practical solutions. The main finding is that heuristic’s performance depends on the scenario and workload and no one dominates in all the cases. Besides, in high load scenarios, the suboptimal system configuration obtained with an heuristic adaptation policy introduce a penalty in electric energy consumption in the range [+25%, +50%] if compared with the energy consumed by an optimal system configuration.

    Energy-aware Auto-scaling Algorithms for Cassandra Virtual Data Centers2017In: Cluster Computing, ISSN 1386-7857, E-ISSN 1573-7543, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 2065-2082Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Apache Cassandra is an highly scalable and available NoSql datastore, largely used by enterprises of each size and for application areas that range from entertainment to big data analytics. Managed Cassandra service providers are emerging to hide the complexity of the installation, fine tuning and operation of Cassandra Virtual Data Centers (VDCs). This paper address the problem of energy efficient auto-scaling of Cassandra VDC in managed Cassandra data centers. We propose three energy-aware autoscaling algorithms: \texttt{Opt}, \texttt{LocalOpt} and \texttt{LocalOpt-H}. The first provides the optimal scaling decision orchestrating horizontal and vertical scaling and optimal placement. The other two are heuristics and provide sub-optimal solutions. Both orchestrate horizontal scaling and optimal placement. \texttt{LocalOpt} consider also vertical scaling. In this paper: we provide an analysis of the computational complexity of the optimal and of the heuristic auto-scaling algorithms; we discuss the issues in auto-scaling Cassandra VDC and we provide best practice for using auto-scaling algorithms; we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms under programmed SLA variation, surge of throughput (unexpected) and failures of physical nodes. We also compare the performance of energy-aware auto-scaling algorithms with the performance of two energy-blind auto-scaling algorithms, namely \texttt{BestFit} and \texttt{BestFit-H}. The main findings are: VDC allocation aiming at reducing the energy consumption or resource usage in general can heavily reduce the reliability of Cassandra in term of the consistency level offered. Horizontal scaling of Cassandra is very slow and make hard to manage surge of throughput. Vertical scaling is a valid alternative, but it is not supported by all the cloud infrastructures.

An Energy-Aware Adaptation Model for Big Data Platforms2016In: 2016 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC) / [ed] IEEE, IEEE, 2016, p. 349-350Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Platforms for big data includes mechanisms and tools to model, organize, store and access big data (e.g. Apache Cassandra, Hbase, Amazon SimpleDB, Dynamo, Google BigTable). The resource management for those platforms is a complex task and must account also for multi-tenancy and infrastructure scalability. Human assisted control of Big data platform is unrealistic and there is a growing demand for autonomic solutions. In this paper we propose a QoS and energy-aware adaptation model designed to cope with the real case of a Cassandra-as-a-Service provider.

    Abstract [en]

Today, The cloud industry is adopting the container technology both for internal usage and as commercial offering. The use of containers as base technology for large-scale systems opens many challenges in the area of resource management at run-time. This paper addresses the problem of selecting the more appropriate performance metrics to activate auto-scaling actions. Specifically, we investigate the use of relative and absolute metrics. Results demonstrate that, for CPU intense workload, the use of absolute metrics enables more accurate scaling decisions. We propose and evaluate the performance of a new autoscaling algorithm that could reduce the response time of a factor between 0.66 and 0.5 compared to the actual Kubernetes' horizontal auto-scaling algorithm.

Measuring Docker Performance: What a Mess!!!2017In: ICPE 2017 - Companion of the 2017 ACM/SPEC International Conference on Performance Engineering, ACM , 2017, p. 11-16Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Today, a new technology is going to change the way platforms for the internet of services are designed and managed. This technology is called container (e.g. Docker and LXC). The internet of service industry is adopting the container technology both for internal usage and as commercial offering. The use of container as base technology for large-scale systems opens many challenges in the area of resource management at run-time, for example: autoscaling, optimal deployment and monitoring. Specifically, monitoring of container based systems is at the ground of any resource management solution, and it is the focus of this work. This paper explores the tools available to measure the performance of Docker from the perspective of the host operating system and of the virtualization environment, and it provides a characterization of the CPU and disk I/O overhead introduced by containers.

Prevalent business model elements in the startup stage2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to discover the use and benefit of business models in the early stages of startup businesses. The researchers focused on the professional services and retail sales industry and interviewed entrepreneurs from two countries as their case study in order to assess the success of business models through the first hand experiences of the entrepreneurs as they applied business models in their startup companies. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to find out how the business model framework is used by small firms in the startup stage. This academic work also aims to increase the significance of the theory described here with the help of a qualitative study of a particular situation: the study of the business model structure built by entrepreneurs in the startup stage of their small firms, all of them belonging to the service sector. Will be taken as an example two developing countries, considering that their economies are tightly hinged on the success of small firms in the service sector, which accounts for about 60% of their economy. The aim is to explain among the main elements of a business model, which are the most relevant when starting a company, for a further value creation and to what extent does the business model framework benefit them. Research Implications: This study also continues the pathway of research on business models and entrepreneurship, in conjunction with the empirical investigation of companies willing to be measured in terms of their performance, study that might require time and resources but could be done as future research to answer the question on whether there is a connection between performance and the architecture of the business model. Practical Implications: The practical implications of this study contribute to the way entrepreneurs would do business in the startup stage in their firms. The use of business models may have a huge impact in the overall success of the firm in its startup stage, thereby contributing positively in the economy of a country.

Evaluating the effectiveness of impact assessment instruments: Theorising the nature and implications of their political constitution2010In: Environmental impact assessment review, ISSN 0195-9255, E-ISSN 1873-6432, Vol. 30, no 6, p. 371-379Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The central role of impact assessment instruments globally in policy integration initiatives has been cemented in recent years. Associated with this trend, but also reflecting political emphasis on greater accountability in certain policy sectors and a renewed focus on economic competitiveness in Western countries, demand has increased for evidence that these instruments are effective (however defined). Resurgent interest in evaluation has not, however, been accompanied by the conceptual developments required to redress longstanding theoretical problems associated with such activities. In order to sharpen effectiveness evaluation theory for impact assessment instruments this article critically examines the neglected issue of their political constitution. Analytical examples are used to concretely explore the nature and significance of the politicisation of impact assessment. It is argued that raising awareness about the political character of impact assessment instruments, in itself, is a vital step in advancing effectiveness evaluation theory. Broader theoretical lessons on the framing of evaluation research are also drawn from the political analysis. We conclude that, at least within the contemporary research context, learning derived from analysing the meaning and implications of plural interpretations of effectiveness represents the most constructive strategy for advancing impact assessment and policy integration theory.

Enhancing planning for local energy systems by the strategic sustainable development framework2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The world is facing energy supply challenges. Rising prices and finite reserves of fossil fuels, combined with necessary reductions in their use in order to mitigate anthropogenic climate change, will dramatically reshape the future energy supply. Among the greatest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions are the energy systems that power transportation, heating and cooling, and industrial processes. It is imperative that energy planning is sustainable, secure and effectively implemented for local development. The aim of our research is to enhance the planning process that can aid authorities moving towards sustainable local energy systems. Local energy systems refer to the supply, distribution and use of energy within a municipality. In this study, we advocate applying a strategic sustainable development framework based on 'backcasting from principles of sustainability'. We analyzed global, European Union and Swedish energy objectives, as well as the results of a survey of beacon European cities to inform strategic planning guidelines for authorities moving towards sustainable local energy systems. Our research suggests that the strategic sustainable development framework provides structure to inform strategic and critical decision points for planning and implementing local energy systems.

Market Entry, Strategy and Business Development in Mobile Health (mHealth) Industry2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Problem formulation. The European Commission considers that health care providers and potential payers may need further evidence of mobile health (mHealth) clinical and economic benefits and despite there are hundreds of mHealth initiatives, most of them did not move beyond the pilot phase.

Purpose. This thesis aims at analyzing how can mHealth companies contribute towards solving existing health care challenges while becoming successful businesses in such an immature market. The expected results are a set of empirical evidences for companies and investors interested in this relatively new industry for the development of successful businesses, products and services.

Literature. The authors have explored classic theories and models on market entry, business and strategy development in combination with recent studies on health care, Internet and mHealth economy and ecosystem.

Methods. A qualitative multiple case study has been conducted. An analytical framework with propositions derived from the literature analysis guide the empirical study of two organizations that have successfully developed mHealth solutions in two countries with different socio-economic situations: China and Spain. Organization A is a health care and lifestyle company from Beijing responsible for a successful app with 80 million users that has brought 45 million USD investment. Organization B is the first intrapreneurial public organization born within a hospital in Madrid and committed to make knowledge available to patients and health care professionals through ICT. After a set of interviews with executive representatives and project managers, a pattern-matching analysis has been used to extract inferences and to identify correlations and deviations from literature research.

Key findings. The main conclusion of this thesis work is that mHealth is clearly a profitable blue ocean industry nowadays with lots of business opportunities to explore, room for competition and complex challenges to solve. On one side, mHealth is presented as a disruptive industry expected to cause a big impact in health care by contributing to solve costs and quality problems although there is little evidence on such benefits. On the other side, privacy, security, regulations, governments’ decisions and reluctant health care professionals become the main barriers for adoption. The outlook for the future of mHealth proves that it will be fundamental to count with multidisciplinary teams of professionals, geographically distributed health centers and technological platforms with secure and standardized communications. All these will not be possible without a general mindset change from government, administrators, regulators and health care professionals to incentivize and foster new mobile health technologies treating them as an ally rather than a threat.

A Framework for an Intelligent and Adaptive Planning of Rehabilitation Therapies2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. In the forthcoming years Healthcare Systems will become better informed, more efficient and particularly focused on the patient through the integration of Information and Communication Technologies. Medical Rehabilitation is an example of a field prone for this evolution. Here, disciplines such as Software Engineering will play a key role during the transformation. Objectives. This study pursues to understand todays rehabilitation therapies and procedures, to conceive how future computer-aided rehabilitation systems should be constructed and to provide a coherent framework that conceptualizes the relationship of their main components and interactions. Methods. The overall thesis work involves a combination of different research methodologies, which vary from literature reviews, empirical observations and semi-structured ethnographic interviews, to constructive research, through software architectural designs. Results. FIAP-RT is a framework created to support the new paradigm on how future software tools oriented to Medical Rehabilitation should be constructed with views to achieve quality attributes such as interoperability, availability, security, accessibility, usability or reliability. Conclusions. This study reveals that it is generally hard to find a real socialization and dissemination of the know-how that is being constantly produced within rehabilitation centers. In addition, it is has been shown how applied Software Engineering can help to integrate advanced solutions even though further evaluation would be needed to validate the proposed framework.

Slow Fashion: Tailoring a Strategic Approach towards Sustainability2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research explores one avenue for achieving sustainability within the fashion industry; which as it exists today is unsustainable. The Slow Fashion movement has an existing foundation in the larger fashion industry and is already making strides towards sustainability. The authors used this opportunity to examine a strategic approach, as its current approach is ad hoc. First, the authors assessed the Slow Fashion movement using the 5 level Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development. To analyze the Slow Fashion movement further, the concept of Leverage Points was used to provide a focused lens to assist the author’s in navigating through the fashion industry’s complex system. Findings were synthesized into thirty strategic recommendations that target various players in the Slow Fashion movement. Three key recommendations will provide the most leverage in strengthening the Slow Fashion movement: 1) Co-create Slow Fashion Principles to represent the values of the movement and a shared definition of sustainability 2) Establish an overarching global network and local chapters for the Slow Fashion movement 3) Harmonize global garment and textile labelling initiatives under a Slow Fashion label.

    Abstract [en]

This project has been created to help elder or people with physical disabilities. The help consists on getting easier the access to the shower. To reach our purpose, we realized a really innovative idea. Our idea is based on a door which rotates 90 º with respect to a lateral axis. In that door there is attached a chair to get easier the shower. When the user is in front of the opened door it would be easier for him or her to reach the chair which is added on the door, after that when the door is closed the user would be in the perfect position to get washed in his or her own. A CAD model was developed to make this design and also evaluate its resistence and safety
