Samband mellan patienttillfredsställelse och första linjen chefens ledarskapsstil: En litteraturstudie2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Resultatet sammanställdes i tre teman.

    Abstract [sv]

Our purpose is to investigate if and how the purpose is different between a public and a privet heath care organization. We have based our essay and our conclusions on interviews, that we did at Blekingesjukhuset in Karlskrona and S:t Görans hospital in Stockholm. We have done the interviews on four to five different levels in both organizations, to get a depth in our investigation. Our conclusion is that there is big a difference in the budgeting between the public sector and the private sector. The big difference is in the follow up process of the budget, but we could not see that it differed so much in the lower levels of the organizations. It was much more obvious when we came up to the managerial level. Another conclusion we made was that it does not have to be the form of ownership that makes the difference; it can also be the interaction between individuals.

Assisted GPS for Location Based Services2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The mobile operators are seeking for opportunities to create differentiation and increase profit. One powerful way is to provide personalized mobile services. A good example of personalisation is by location. Services based on position are called Location Based Services – LBS. To realise LBS, some sort of positioning method is needed. The two most common positioning methods today are Global Positioning System - GPS and network based positioning. GPS is not fully suited for LBS because you need an additional handset to receive the satellite signals. In network positioning however, you only need a mobile phone, but on the other hand, the accuracy is far less, only between 100 metres up to several kilometres. What technology would be a good positioning technology for location based services? Could A-GPS be such technology? A-GPS is a positioning system which uses the same satellites as GPS, but besides that, it also uses a reference network. The reference network tracks the receiver and the satellites. It also makes some of the heavy calculations that the handsets are doing in the GPS system. That makes the A-GPS receivers less power consuming and more suited to be implemented into mobile phones. Furthermore, A-GPS are more sensitive, meaning that it easier can receive signals when using indoor, for example. The question is if A-GPS technology holds its promises? Does A-GPS really work well in mobile phones? Is the accuracy and availability as good as the theory says and is it possible to implement an own, well working, location based service into an A-GPS mobile phone?

Fysisk planering i världsarv – exemplen Falun, Karlskrona och Visby2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

-ett utvecklingsförslag för Pottholmen2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Strategier som påverkar cancerpatienters hopp2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

On using Desktop Grid Computing in software industry2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. When dealing with large data sets and heavy calculations the common solution is clusters, supercomputers or Grids of these two. However, there are ways of gaining large computational power by utilizing the unused cycles of regular home or office computers, this are referred to as Desktop Grids. Objectives. In this study we review the current field of solutions for open source Desktop Grid computing capable of dealing with a heterogeneous set of clients and dynamic size of the Desktop Grid. We investigate current use, interest of use and priority of key attributes of Desktop Grids. Finally we want to show how time effective Desktop Grids are compared to execution on a single machine and in the process show effort needed to setup a Desktop Grid and start computing. The overall purpose of this study is to provide a path for industry organizations to take when taking the first step into Desktop Grid computing. Methods. We use a systematic review to collect information of existing open source Desktop Grid solutions. Studies are selected based on inclusion criterions and a quality assessment. A survey questioner is used to assess industry usage, interest and prioritization of attributes of Desktop Grids. We will conduct an experiment to show execution speedup as well as setup effort. Results. We found ten open source Desktop Grids fulfilling our requirements. The survey shows that Desktop Grids is used to a very little extent within industry while a majority of the participants state that there is an interest for Desktop Grids. As result of the experiment, we can say that we achieved very high speedup and that effort needed to setup a Desktop Grid is about 40 hours for one person with no prior experience to the selected Desktop Grid system. Conclusions. We conclude that industry organizations have a possible need for Desktop Grids but in order to be more successful, Desktop Grid developers must put more effort into areas as automated testing and code compilation.

Psykiskt välbefinnande på arbetsplatsen: En kvantitativ undersökning om arbetsmotivation, arbetsmiljö ochgruppdynamik2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mental well-being at the work place, could be characterised by a well-functioninginteraction between employer and employees, as well as when the employerpromotes health and safety for the employees, by applying adequate measures.Lack of social support and camaraderie together with mental pressure and stress, are some factors contributing to lack of mental well-being at the work place. The purpose of the study was to investigate the employee’s mental well-being atthe work place, focusing on group dynamics, work motivation and stress, togetherwith what preventive measures may have been taken by the employer. The investigation is based on a web-based survey, resulting in 97 completeresponses from individuals of various ages. From the survey results, tests wheremade in SPSS with different professions in focus and its relation to mental weebeing, stress, work motivation and group dynamics, in addition to preventivemeasures to address lack of mental well-being within each profession category. The result shows that employees who are appreciated and where thecommunication is well developed, also benefit from mental well-being to a higherdegree. Primarily it is the co-workers and colleagues that motivate each othermost at the work place. It also shows that related to most professions, theemployer does not apply any physical improvements to the work environment, norto improve the mental well-being at the work place. To further the study within this area, the education level could be evaluated toseek a connection to mental well-being.

E-handel med Kläder: en marknadsundersökning2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

Uppgradering av förarvärme Scania OmniLink 20102014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract Scania OmniLink 2010 is a bus with excellent driving properties, but it has flaws in the driver heating system. This model is expected to be in use for at least ten more years, which implicate countless hours of work. A lot of disturbance is always present in the work of the driver. At the same time he or she has to be nice and helpful and drive safely. Removing some of the disturbance will result in the driver being able to focus on the work, get less tired and annoyed and keep a normal reaction time. This work has been executed at Nobina Tyresö. The hypothesis that has been evaluated is that the driver is disturbed by the heating system not being able to warm the feet and lower legs sufficiently, draught in the face and the driver fan making unreasonable loud noise. Surveys and interviews have confirmed the assumptions. The noise, draught and unbalanced temperature that the drivers’ experiences have been confirmed by different measurements performed at the busses of Nobina. Requirements on the upgrade of the driver heating system are that it has to be cheap, lower the noise distinctively, obtain a comfortable temperature all over the body and eliminate draught from the ceiling. Different suggestions were evaluated and a combination of some suggestions was tested hands-on. A simple and powerful upgrade has been extracted after the tests. All requirements were fulfilled, the driver fan noise was significantly reduced and the feet got extra warmth. Furthermore measurements to eliminate causes of some common damages were suggested.

    Abstract [sv]

Analysis of a Mechanical System Containing Wires2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A procedure for mechanical analysis of systems containing wires is presented. In the studied system the wire length is changed which affects the mass, stiffness and damping in the system. Time-varying parameters can give the system a complex dynamic behaviour and possible unstable response. A multi-degree-of freedom system with changing parameters was analyzed in this work and the result shows that the response may contain higher harmonic response. The developed simulation model is believed to be suitable for investigating the effect of design changes and check the stability of the studied system.

Compact City and Densification Strategy. The case of Gothenburg.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Compact City Model is considered one of the planning strategies that can contain the urban sprawl and develop more sustainable cities, in the environmental, social and economic dimensions. In this paper, I analyze the Compact Model in theory, by focusing on the claimed benefits of this strategy and also on the critics, as a base to investigate after the empirical case of Gothenburg. The analysis of the planning system of the city shows the aim to achieve a denser urban form by applying the driving factors that characterised the Compact Model. At the same time, I consider policies, public transport system, initiatives and campaigning linked with the planning system, as fundamental issues to study the elements of the compaction strategy of Gothenburg. After a deep analysis of the city development and the urban planning framework, it is clear that densification in strategic nodes is a feasible outcome of the Compact City concept when applied to Gothenburg. The planning strategy of the compact nodes is meant to guarantee a good accessibility and integrate collective transports, services and attractive public spaces to avoid the increase of the urban sprawl.

Det illojala barnets uppror: Studier kring jan Myrdals självbiografiska texter1997Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Jan Myrdal has often been considered a controversial author. During the sixties he was mostly regarded as a political figure, much appreciated by those who shared his political views and even more abhorred by those who did not. On the international scene his Report from a Chinese Village (1963) is perhaps the best known of his books, having inspired, for example, the sociologically orientated studies of the American author, Studs Terkel. In his abundant and multifacetted œuvre Myrdal has been working in most of the established genres, and also developed new ones. In my work on Myrdal’s texts I have, for a number of reasons, focused on his Childhood books (1982 - 1989). They represent an important part and, in some ways, the very kernel of his work. They deal with a child, growing up in a very special environment - his parents are internationally orientated radical politicians and, both are Nobel prize winners - developing his mind mostly in opposition to that environment. The story of that child, written by a son of famous parents and himself internationally well-known - a number of his books are translated into several foreign languages, - is in itself an interesting subject for a study. From the critical point of view its concentrated attention on the child and the child’s viewpoint, involving an interesting narratological pattern, invites a close reading in the spirit of the French critic, Gérard Genette, and his follower, Michael Riffaterre. Methodically and theoretically the study of autobiographical writing constitutes a complex task. With regard to generic definitions, the critic will find Childhood an interesting intermediate case between autobiography and autobiographical novel. Regarded historically, Myrdal's Childhood books are part of the great tradition from S:t Augustine and Rousseau and more especially of the rebellious, “réfractaire“ branch formed by Stendhal, Vallès and Strindberg. In the context of autobiographical writings, considered as a genre, Myrdal's books were written at a time when new subgenres were being formed by sociological and psychological case stories and also by a media interest in people - famous and unknown alike - speaking freely an openly about their lives and personal problems on the radio, in magazines and in TV-shows. Myrdal's’ readers certainly had their expectations formed by these variations of autobiographical writing. For these variations I have chosen a term proposeded by Pillippe Lejeune: “littérature personnelle“. In my “Introduction“ after a brief survey of generic theory put forward by Johnny Kondrup och Eva Hættner Aurelius, I discuss my reasons for turning to the French critic, Pillippe Lejeune, as a seminal force among generic theorists. His emphasis on generic distinctions, not as a norm of classification but as a reader’s tool towards his generic understanding of the text, has been adopted as a guiding principle. Particular attention is given to Lejeune’s discussion of the autobiographical pact: through the name identity between author and protagonist the former signs a kind of contract obligating himself to tell the truth, or perhaps his truth about the life and the experiences being related. This pact, be it implicit or explicit, appeared to be of great importance to Myrdal's’ readers, delimitating their horizon of expectations as well as their understanding of the text and, in particular, their evaluation of the text. A survey of the actual stage in generic history during which the Childhood books were published, follows, special regard beeing paid to those new kinds of “littérature personnelle“ which have been conditioned by developements in the mass media. In this context, different readers’ expectations in relation to various kinds of auto-biographical writings will be discussed. Lastly we arrive at the extensive collection of reviews which forms the basis of my next chapter, “The Reception“. Myrdal's Childhood provoked an intense debate. The book was first brought to public notice by the author in person, who read it on Swedish Radio, and many people reacted against what they regarded as an evil and false description of the famous parents. A large number of reviews followed, the study of which is an important part of my work. Here the marriage of genre theory and reception theory, proclaimed in Le pacte autobiographique by Pilippe Lejeune, comes into its own. His conception of genre viewed as a reader’s tool - “understanding is genrebound“ - informs my understanding of the reviewers’ different readings and evaluations. The reception of Myrdal’s Childhood books raises the following questions: With what kind of previous understanding, with what kind and degree of consciousness of genre (genremedvetande) and with what horizons of expectations did the readers meet those books? What kinds of readings were put in motion by the different generic expectations? How was the reader’s evaluation influenced by those presuppositions? Those reviewers who read Childhood as an autobiography or memoir emphasized the author’s duty to tell the truth about his childhood, including an appreciative attitude towards his parents. As that attitude was highly critical, these reviewers evaluated the book according to their generic expectations: this could not possibly be the truth about those famous and generally esteemed persons, and so the description was an outrageous lie. On the other hand, those who chose to read the book as a novel, as a story of a neglected and unhappy child, found it a true and deeply moving tale. So the reception of the Childhood books took on in a way the character of a trial, the readers taking the parts of prosecutors, witnesses and judges: had the author, or had he not, exercised fairness and justice to his famous parents in his description of his childhood? Several reviewers, who found it both possible and rewarding to read the Childhood books simultanously as autobiography and as autobiographical novels, could find numerous qualities in the books. They found the story a true picture of a very special child in very special surroundings, but also found a universality that made them identifiy themselves with the child (and also, in a few cases) with the parents. The evaluations of the reviewers changed in an interesting way with respect to the later books in the series. Many reviewers of the first book, Childhood, appreciated its finer qualities, but in many cases critics took a dismissive attitude. The second book, Another World, was highly estimated, however. The reviewers now tended to read the book less as a biography of the famous parents and more as a story of the child, told by the child itself. They were increasingly able to regard it as a hybrid between autobio-graphy and fiction, and, accordingly, could accept the personal descriptions of the parents as the experiences and the subjective truth of the child. Most reviewers of the third book, Getting on Thirteen, applied this model of reading. Correspondingly, the evaluations were changed; with very few exceptions the books were highly regarded by later reviewers. A new and more variated generic consciousness was fundamental to their evaluation. And so much for the reception. In my own readings I have asked the corresponding questions: What possibilities are offered to the critic by the different generic expectations, and by the different models of previous understanding and evaluation? What happens when the reader regards the much-debated works as free artefacts, as parts of the authors complete œuvre, as parts of a tradition, as descriptions of an existing and referential reality, or as authorial expressions in the making of his own consciousness, his personality, his ego? These are the questions that prevade my reading of the Childhood books. I have chosen to consider Myrdals’ books mainly as artefacts belonging to the autobiographical tradition, having their existence on the border between autobiography and novel. The chapter “The process of Growth“ aims at a description of Myrdals early and various declarations of his writing intentions, even these forming part of his autobiographical writing: this is his view of himself as an author, the author also of the Childhood books. Myrdal considers his authorial intentions a question of loyalties: whom will his writing serve? He has made a deliberate choice of loyalties; they remain not with the educated, well-manœvered people, but with the poor and oppressed, who show resistance towards those in power. This resistance often takes forms which are vulgar in a Bachtinean sense. This vulgarity assumes a programmatic value: the author chooses his tradition from popular tales of rich and poor, which often contain vulgar resistance to and rebellion against all kinds of oppression. For such resistance he has found a word: he regards himself a “réfractaire“, a resister and a rebel, in the tradition of the French Enlightenment authors and their heirs, e.g. Strindberg and Jules Vallès. The task and the resonsibility this “réfractaire“ tradition entails, are the foundation of Myrdals’ view of himself as an author, one of his many descriptions of his self, the explanation of which, he finds in those experiences from his childhood contained in the Childhood books. Myrdal has been working on autobiographical material in various guises. In “Littérature personnelle before Childhood“ a short account is given of Myrdal’s use of “I“ for different purposes. In public performances, not unlike those of the parents so profoundly despised by the son, appears an “I“. That “I“ is used by the author as an example in a political analysis. Another “I“ comes forward in the deep and earnest self-examination in the author’s earlier autobiographical works, e.g.Rescontra and Confessions of a Disloyal European. Still more important: is the fact that from the novels of his early youth, Myrdal has been working continually on his childhood impressions. There is a permanent discussion between critics of autobiography about the relation between the autobiographer and his memories; are they truly remembered and truthfully rendered, and can anybody remember the exact truth? To this discussion Myrdal’s texts offer an interesting contribution: they enable the reader to study the same episode in different contexts and under varying lightning conditions; and there are also memory changes under the impression of later experiences, the author becoming more and more critical towards his parents and his environment. His criticism is directed towards both the personal behaviour of the parents and the radical modern vision of society they represent. His rebellious, “réfraktaire“, criticism defies the parents personally both in their educating rôle in the spirit of the new modernism, and their parttaking in the mecanisms of oppression inherent in radical politics. In my next section, “The tradition“ the classical autobiographical tradition is considered, with particular regard to its description of the child, an aspect which is far from obvious among previous early autobiography. My guide is Albert Wifstrand, representative of early critical interest in autobiographical childhood descriptions. In his study “The view of the Child“, he has stated the necessary conditions for such a description: an interest in the child for its own sake, and a regard for its singularity. He finds two tendensies in later, Romantic, childhood descriptions, which run counter to those of classical Antiquity, namely the conception of the child as both good and happy at the same time. Of these ascribed qualities the former is found to be the more enduring, while modern texts tend to emphasize the deep unhappiness of the still innocent child. Building on Wifstrand’s view of the child, and still more on Hættner Aurelius’ stressing on the trial as an essential pattern in autobiographical writing, I offer a brief discussion of some classical episodes in S:t Augustine and Rousseau. While S:t Augustine, in the retrospective trial of the child, tends to pronounce the accused child quite as guilty as its adult judges, Rousseau averts the accusations from the child towards the adult accusers and judges, who are to bear the real guilt: through an erraneous, perhaps even malvolent education, they have destroyed the originally good child and made it at the same time unhappy and less good. In the child such education, and especially the unjust judgments of adult people, awake a justified opposition and a deeply-rooted resistance to any kind of oppression. Taking Rousseau as a turning-point in the history of the trial theme, I give attention to three classics in the autobiographical tradition, to whom the term “réfractaire“ may reasonably be applied, i.e. Stendhal, Vallès och Strindberg. Their impressions of childhod are examined, as were those of Rousseau, from three points of view: social environment, family pattern, and above all, the trial theme. The similarities found between these writers as a group, and between that group and Myrdal, are my reason for positing the “réfractaire“ tradition to which Myrdal adheres. They originate in the different writers’ sense of childhood’s deep injustices, not least in those trials where the innocent child is found guilty. A humiliation of this nature tends, in the eyes of the adult narrator, to take on a pattern-making rôle. Just as the child reacted against the injustice of childhood, these writers have, in their adult lives, reacted against every form of oppression - religious, political, or otherwise. The adult “réfractaire“ was formed by his childhood experiences. In the chapter “The Œuvre“ I have chosen to regard Myrdal’s texts mainly as artefacts belonging to the “réfractaire“ autobiographical tradition, my aim being to reflect on the pattern of the text while making use of different kinds of generic understanding. The reader, on encountering any kind of autobiographical writing, tends to connect it with the actual situation it describes. The reader will therefore always ask himself - and the author - which kind of truth the author is telling. Is he telling his own internal truth about his own feelings - a truth which no one can deny him - or is he telling the truth about facts possible to control from other sources? Thus the reader will always compare the text with the referential reality it presupposes. The referential truth behind the autobiographical story, and the author’s as well as the protagonist’s relation to phenomena typical of his time, are discussed in the sub-chapters “Attitude to psychology and psychoanalysis“ and “The ’réfractaire’ and radicalism“. In accordance with the earlier “réfractaires“, Myrdal takes a very conscious attitude towards his own text. More often than most authors, he has stated his (sometimes contradictory) intentions in an ongoing and highly articulate discussion with his readers, implied readers as well as critics. These declarations of intent are discussed under the heading “The autobiographical project“. The main thing, however, is the text considered as such, and read both as as fiction and autobiography. A review of certain motivic and thematic points - corresponding to that previously applied to Stendhal, Vallès, and Strindberg - is put forward in the sub-chapters “The social continuity“, “The picture of family“, and “The child on trial - the trial of the child“. While taking some account of the referential reality behind the text, I am primarily concerned to investigate how these themes takie on the character of a truth deeply embedded in the textual pattern. “Fictional truth“, according to Riffaterre, is the internal truth to be found in the grammar of fictionality. Lastly, under the heading “The growth of the Ego out of dreams and fantasies“, the numerous dream and fantasy sequences are examined. In these, the growing Ego is formed, as well as consciously forming itself, in opposition against the environment, not least by dint of reading habits and dream-worlds. While taking on an increasingly “réfractaire“ character, the Ego at first finds its dreamworld terrifying. Subsequently, it learns how to master its fantasies and to use them not only as a refuge from an odious reality, but also with a view - at least on the plane of thought - to oppose and take vengeance of its opponents. In the third stage, the world of dreams and fantasies forms the framework of an increasingly intellectual treatment of material furnished by reading and thinking. Eventually, this process of growth is sufficiently advanced for the protagonist to bid farwell, albeit not without pain, to the world of dreams and fantasies.

En organisations kulturella normer och värderingar och dess påverkan på arbetet mot ökad jämställdhet på chefspositioner2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how cultural norms and values support or restrict changes to find out why it is not equal in management positions. The study also examines how organizations can change those cultural norms and values and how the gender equalityplan can be used as a tool for change in the work towards gender equality in management positions. With a qualitative approach five workers within the police in Karlskrona were interviewed, because it is an organization, which is not equal in management positions, despite active measures. The theoretical approach that was used is organizational culture. Some of the study’s conclusions are that there are different opinions about how cultural norms and values support or restrict the work of change towards gender equality in management positions and how organizations can change the cultural norms and values that constitute barriers to women's advancement and how the equalityplan can be used as a tool for change to affect gender equality. Despite different opinions, we can establish that cultural norms and values obstruct women's willingness to advance. Furthermore, our study also concludes that it is possible to change cultural norms and values to some extent by increased awareness and knowledge about the problem of gender inequality. We can also observe that the equality plan can be used as a tool for change even though it often tends to be a paper work.

Strategic Sustainable Development for the Stationary Power Sector: Is Carbon Capture and Storage a Strategic Investment for the Future?2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

An examination of the stationary power sector is performed using The Natural Step framework and Sustainability Principles (SP), in order to aid decision makers in developing policy to balance energy needs while reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in order to address climate change. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is evaluated for its sustainability aspects, and is found to be a potentially sustainable approach which can be a bridging technology to a more sustainable energy mix, as well as a remediation technology which can remove CO2 from the atmosphere when utilized in combination with biomass fuel. Initial actions for restructuring the stationary power sector should emphasise demand reduction and efficiency efforts, followed by switching to renewable energy sources. If the first two strategies can not provide sufficient CO2 reductions, then investments in CCS technology may be an appropriate choice. CCS with coal-fired power can be a means to decouple CO2 emissions from fossil fuel use, but other SP violations associated with coal use must also be fully addressed before this strategy can be considered a truly sustainable option.

A novel progressive mesh representation method based on the half-edge data structure and √3 subdivision2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Progressive mesh (PM) representation can perfectly meet the requirements of generating multi-resolutions for a detailed 3D model. This research proposes a new PM representation method to improve the PM representation storage efficiency and reduce PM generation time. In existing PM representation methods, more than 4 adjacent vertices will be stored for one vertex in the PM representation. Furthermore, the methods always use the inefficient vertex and face list representation during the generation process. In our proposed method, only three vertices are stored by using the √3 subdivision scheme and the efficient half-edge data structure replaces the vertex and face list representation. To evaluate the proposed method, a designed experiment is conducted by using three common testing 3D models. The result illustrates the improvements by comparing to other previous methods.

    Abstract [sv]

ANFIS BASED OPPURTUNISTIC POWER CONTROL FOR COGNITIVE RADIO IN SPECTRUM SHARING2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Cognitive radio is a intelligent technology that helps in resolving the issue of spectrum scarcity. In a spectrum sharing network, where secondary user can communicate simultaneously along with the primary user in the same frequency band, one of the challenges in cognitive radio is to obtain balance between two conflicting goals that are to minimize the interference to the primary users and to improve the performance of the secondary user. In our thesis we have considered a primary link and a secondary link (cognitive link) in a fading channel. To improve the performance of the secondary user by maintaining the Quality of Service (Qos) to the primary user, we considered varying the transmit power of the cognitive user. Efficient utilization of power in any system helps in improving the performance of that system. For this we proposed ANFIS based opportunistic power control strategy with primary user’s SNR and primary user’s channel gain interference as inputs. By using fuzzy inference system, Qos of primary user is adhered and there is no need of complex feedback channel from primary receiver. The simulation results of the proposed strategy shows better performance than the one without power control. Initially we have considered propagation environment without path loss and then extended our concept to the propagation environment with path loss where we have considered relative distance between the links as one of the input parameters.

Architecture for IMS Security to Mobile:Focusing on Artificial Immune System and Mobile Agents Integration2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is an open IP based service infrastructure that enables an easy deployment of new rich multimedia services mixing voice and data. The IMS is an overlay network on top of IP that uses SIP as the primary signaling mechanism. As an emerging technology, the SIP standard will certainly be the target of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and consequently IMS will also inherit this problem. The objective of proposed architecture for IMS is to cram the potential attacks and security threats to IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and explore the security solutions developed by 3GPP. This research work incorporates the ideas of immune system and multiagent architecture that is capable of detecting, identifying and recovering from an attack. The proposed architecture protects IMS core components i.e. P-CSCF (Proxy- Call Session Control Function), I-CSCF (Interrogating-Call Session Control Function), S-CSCF (Serving Call Session Control Function) and HSS (Home Subscriber Server) from external and internal threats like eavesdropping, SQL injection and denial-ofservice (DoS) attacks. In the first level i.e. CPU under normal load all incoming and out going messages were investigated to detect and prevent SQL injection. Second level considers Denial of Service (DOS) attacks when CPU load exceeds threshold limit. Proposed architecture is designed and evaluated by using an approach called Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM). The results obtained confirm consistency of the architecture.

AUTOMATED ASSESSMENT FOR THE THERAPY SUCCESS OF FOREIGN ACCENT SYNDROME: Based on Emotional Temperature2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. Foreign Accent Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder, where among other symptoms of the patient’s emotional speech is affected. As FAS is one of the mildest speech disorders, there has not been much research done on the cost-effective biomarkers which reflect recovery of competences speech.

Objectives. In this pilot study, we implement the Emotional Temperature biomarker and check its validity for assessing the FAS. We compare the results of implemented biomarker with another biomarker based on the global distances for FAS and identify the better one.

Methods. To reach the objective, the emotional speech data of two patients at different phases of the treatment are considered. After preprocessing, experiments are performed on various window sizes and the observed correctly classified instances in automatic recognition are used to calculate Emotional temperature. Further, we use the better biomarker for tracking the recovery in the patient’s speech.

Results. The Emotional temperature of the patient is calculated and compared with the ground truth and with that of the other biomarker. The Emotional temperature is calculated to track the emergence of compensatory skills in speech.

Conclusions. A biomarker based on the frame-view of speech signal has been implemented. The implementation has used the state of art feature set and thus is an unproved version of the classical Emotional Temperature. The biomarker has been used to automatically assess the recovery of two patients diagnosed with FAS. The biomarker has been compared against the global view biomarker and has advantages over it. It also has been compared to human evaluations and captures the same dynamics.

Automatic Handwritten Digit Recognition On Document Images Using Machine Learning Methods2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: The main purpose of this thesis is to build an automatic handwritten digit recognition method for the recognition of connected handwritten digit strings. To accomplish the recognition task, first, the digits were segmented into individual digits. Then, a digit recognition module is employed to classify each segmented digit completing the handwritten digit string recognition task. In this study, different machine learning methods, which are SVM, ANN and CNN architectures are used to achieve high performance on the digit string recognition problem. In these methods, images of digit strings are trained with the SVM, ANN and CNN model with HOG feature vectors and Deep learning methods structure by sliding a fixed size window through the images labeling each sub-image as a part of a digit or not. After the completion of the segmentation, to achieve the complete recognition of handwritten digits. Objective: The main purpose of this thesis is to find out the recognition performance of the methods. In order to analyze the performance of the methods, data is needed to be used for training using machine learning methods. Then digit data is tested on the desired machine learning technique. In this thesis, the following methods are performed:

    • Implementation of HOG Feature extraction method with SVM
    • Implementation of HOG Feature extraction method with ANN
    • Implementation of Deep Learning methods with CNN

Methods: This research will be carried out using two methods. The first research method is the ¨Literature Review¨ and the second ¨Experiment¨. Initially, a literature review is conducted to get a clear knowledge on the algorithms and techniques which will be used to answer the first research question i.e., to know which type of data is required for the machine learning methods and the data analysis is performed. Later on, with the knowledge of RQ1, Experimentation is conducted to answer the RQ2, RQ3, RQ4. Quantitative data is used to perform the experimentation because qualitative data which obtains from case-study and survey cannot be used for this experiment method as it contains non-numerical data. In this research, an experiment is conducted to find the best suitable machine learning method from the existing methods. As mentioned above in the objectives, an experiment is conducted using SVM, ANN, and CNN. By considering the results obtained from the experiment, a comparison is made on the metrics considered which results in CNN as the best method suitable for Documents Images.

Results: Compare the results for SVM, ANN with HOG Feature extraction and the CNN method by using segmented results. Based on the Experiment results it is found that SVM and ANN have some drawbacks like low accuracy and low performance in the recognition of documented images. So, the other method i.e., CNN has greater performance with high accuracy. The following are the results of the recognition rates of each method.

    • SVM performance - 39%
    • ANN performance - 37%
    • CNN performance - 71%.

Conclusion: This research concentrates on providing an efficient method for recognition of automatic handwritten digits recognition. Here a sample training data is treated with existing machine learning and deep learning methods like SVM, ANN, and CNN. By the results obtained from the experimentation, it clearly is shown that the CNN method is much efficient with 71% performance when compared to ANN and SVM methods.

Reasons Governing the Adoption and Denial of TickITplus: A Survey2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. Software Process Improvement (SPI) initiatives like Capability Maturity Model (CMM), Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), Bootstrap etc., have been developed on the primary agenda of continuous software process improvement. Similarly, about two decades ago, the United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) have laid down a set of guidelines based on the ISO quality standards for providing certification to organizations named TickIT. TickIT is now obsolete with its successor scheme TickITplus taking up its place with a lot of significant additions. All the companies which were certified based on TickIT guidelines (more than 1000 companies) were asked to move to TickITplus in order to keep their TickIT certification. However, until now it has been three years since the inception of TickITplus and only 70 companies have adopted TickITplus. This is way below relative to the number of TickIT certified organizations. The present thesis is done in order to find the factors why most of the companies have not adopted TickITplus and also why the 70 organizations have moved to TickITplus.

Objectives In this study, an attempt has been made to accomplish the following objectives: Identifying the changes that have been brought about in the new scheme. The factors that a software organization looks into while adopting or migrating to a new software quality certification scheme are identified. Validate these factors with the help of survey and interviews. Analyze the results of survey and interviews to provide the reasons why most of the organizations haven’t adopted TickITplus certification scheme.

Methods. This research is done by using a mixed method approach by incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research methods. An online survey is conducted with the help of an online questionnaire as part of the quantitative leg. Two survey questionnaires have been framed to gather responses. With respect to the qualitative research method interviews are conducted to get a wider understanding about the factors that led an organization to migrate or not to migrate to TickITplus. The gathered data is analyzed using statistical methods like bivariate and univariate analysis for the quantitative method and thematic coding has been applied for the qualitative method. Triangulation method is used to validate the data obtained by correlating the results from the survey and interviews with those extracted from the literature review.

Results. Results pertaining to the reasons why companies have moved to and also why other companies haven’t taken up TickITplus have been gathered from the survey and interviews. It was identified that high costs and low customer demand were the main reasons for the organizations not to choose TickITplus while among the organizations which have moved to TickITplus have also chosen the scheme based on customer requirement. However, few other reasons apart from these have also been identified which are presented in this document

Conclusions. Conclusions have been drawn citing the importance of costs incurred for implementing TickITplus as a reason for not selecting TickITplus as it was considered very expensive. Among other reasons customer requirement was also low which was identified as a factor for the relatively low number of TickITplus certified organizations. On the other hand, among the TickITplus certified firms, customer demand forms the prominent reason for moving to TickITplus and lack of appropriate people to take up the work was considered as an important hindrance while implementing TickITplus. Several other reasons and challenges have also been identified which are clearly detailed in the document.

Simulation of Electromagnetic Properties of a Transponder Antenna Using FEKO: To characterize the dependency of energy transfer and reception properties of the transponder antenna2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Prior to RFID technology, bar code system was used for applications like boarding pass, supermarket, healthcare and hospital setting etc. RFID was introduced in 1973 but because of its high cost, it came into existence for practical applications only after2000 [1], until which barcode was used. The utilization of Radio Frequency identification solution is reaching itspeak and plays a vital role in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Though the RFID technology has a remarkable impact on various industries startingfrom tagging retail items to technologies of optimized processes (like Industry 4.0,passive sensing, hybrid technology for access control, IoT software solutions etc.).Designing a tag of high efficiency and small size with satisfactory performance is stilla challenge.

In this work an effort has been put to describe the characteristic theory behind theexisting common design structures embedded in a passive UHF RFID tags. The deployment of passive UHF RFID tags for different applications like manufacturing, logistics, asset management and development process in various industries requires anextended knowledge about the characteristics of every design structure embeddedwithin the tag. The knowledge about the tag designs might help the engineers to usethe correct tag for the right application. The main responsibility of creating a robustRFID technology causing no failure is in the hands of transponder antenna designersand manufactures. Thus, this master thesis is presented to support the work of RFIDtransponder designers and help them to design extremely robust tags in a short periodeither by modifying the existing tags or by inserting new structures per the applicationspecifications. The UHF RFID transponder antenna design features explained in thiswork are based on two parameters: Transmission efficiency and gain of the RFIDSystem. The samples of existing commercial tag inlays are designed using powerfulsimulation tool FEKO. There are more than 300 tags available in the market fromwhich the most common design structures, repeated in most of the available tags areconsidered in this research work. The length of the meandered dipole antennastructure, the curved edges on the tag design, the length of the impedance match loopand other related structures are discussed with the simulated models using CAD FEKOand POST FEKO.

Continuous Video Quality of Experience Modelling using Machine Learning Model Trees1996Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Adaptive video streaming is perpetually influenced by unpredictable network conditions, whichcauses playback interruptions like stalling, rebuffering and video bit rate fluctuations. Thisleads to potential degradation of end-user Quality of Experience (QoE) and may make userchurn from the service. Video QoE modelling that precisely predicts the end users QoE underthese unstable conditions is taken into consideration quickly. The root cause analysis for thesedegradations is required for the service provider. These sudden changes in trend are not visiblefrom monitoring the data from the underlying network service. Thus, this is challenging toknow this change and model the instantaneous QoE. For this modelling continuous time, QoEratings are taken into consideration rather than the overall end QoE rating per video. To reducethe user risk of churning the network providers should give the best quality to the users.

In this thesis, we proposed the QoE modelling to analyze the user reactions change over timeusing machine learning models. The machine learning models are used to predict the QoEratings and change patterns in ratings. We test the model on video Quality dataset availablepublicly which contains the user subjective QoE ratings for the network distortions. M5P modeltree algorithm is used for the prediction of user ratings over time. M5P model gives themathematical equations and leads to more insights by given equations. Results of the algorithmshow that model tree is a good approach for the prediction of the continuous QoE and to detectchange points of ratings. It is shown that to which extent these algorithms are used to estimatechanges. The analysis of model provides valuable insights by analyzing exponential transitionsbetween different level of predicted ratings. The outcome provided by the analysis explains theuser behavior when the quality decreases the user ratings decrease faster than the increase inquality with time. The earlier work on the exponential transitions of instantaneous QoE overtime is supported by the model tree to the user reaction to sudden changes such as video freezes.

Innovation as a function of company performance2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to provide clarity on which factors within an organization positively affect its performance in terms of innovation.  Innovation is seen as a critical component of a company’s strategy in achieving market differentiation and profitability, yet for many, it remains a frustrating pursuit.  This study aims to empirically model the relationship between a firm’s investment in innovation and the effect of this investment on its performance.  The method used is Structural Equation Modeling with data gathered from our online survey of 128 respondents from firms within the EU.  This work addresses two research questions, the first being to confirm that a firm’s innovation performance is influenced by both a commitment to human factors focusing on softer values in combination with strong R&D and technical capability.  Secondly, whether the presence of innovation inhibitors influences this relationship.  The findings showed that a firm’s innovation performance is improved when it prioritizes creating an environment and culture that nurtures innovation only when activated through a strong commitment to technical and R&D excellence, but not without this technical capacity.  Secondly, the introduction of innovation inhibitors reconfirmed the first finding, and the relationship between both the human factors within a company and its technical capability, as well as the relationship between this technical capability and its performance was stronger in their presence.

Examining Various Input Patterns Effecting Software  Application Performance: A Quasi-experiment on Performance Testing2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, non-functional testing has a great impact on the real-time environment. Non-functional testing helps to analyze the performance of the application on both server and client. Load testing attempts to cause the system under test to respond incorrectly in a situation that differs from its normal operation, but rarely encountered in real world use. Examples include providing abnormal inputs to the software or placing real-time software under unexpectedly high loads. High loads are induced over the application to test the performance, but there is a possibility that particular pattern of the low load could also induce load on a real-time system. For example, repeatedly making a request to the system every 11 seconds might cause a fault if the system transitions to standby state after 10 seconds of inactivity. The primary aim of this study is to find out various low load input patterns affecting the software, rather than simply high load inputs. A quasi-experiment was chosen as a research method for this study. Performance testing was performed on the web application with the help of a tool called HP load runner. A comparison was made between low load and high load patterns to analyze the performance of the application and to identify bottlenecks under different load.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine whether hierarchically defined groups differ in their perceptions of how organizational distance has changed following a radical organizational change that saw one hierarchical level eliminated from the organizations’ structure. Interviews were conducted with employees atdifferent hierarchical levels, from the same workplace, who all went through anorganizational change during the spring of 2013.

The change initiative that was implemented consisted of the removal of one hierarchical level from the organizational structure. In the two years since the implementation this study observed noticeable reductions in both structural and cultural distance within the organization, while the physical distance between workers and the closest ranking production-manager had increased. The study shows how communication and interaction across hierarchical levels contributes in reducing organizational distance, while structural factors remain which act to maintain existing distances. The importance of frequent communication throughout the change process will, according to the findings, promote enthusiasm and belief in the change initiative throughout the organization.

Component selection in Software Engineering: Which attributes are the most important in the decision process?2018In: EUROMICRO Conference Proceedings, IEEE conference proceedings, 2018, p. 198-205Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract— Component-based software engineering is a common approach to develop and evolve contemporary software systems where different component sourcing options are available: 1)Software developed internally (in-house), 2)Software developed outsourced, 3)Commercial of the shelf software, and 4) Open Source Software. However, there is little available research on what attributes of a component are the most important ones when selecting new components. The object of the present study is to investigate what matters the most to industry practitioners during component selection. We conducted a cross-domain anonymous survey with industry practitioners involved in component selection. First, the practitioners selected the most important attributes from a list. Next, they prioritized their selection using the Hundred-Dollar ($100) test. We analyzed the results using Compositional Data Analysis. The descriptive results showed that Cost was clearly considered the most important attribute during the component selection. Other important attributes for the practitioners were: Support of the component, Longevity prediction, and Level of off-the-shelf fit to product. Next an exploratory analysis was conducted based on the practitioners’ inherent characteristics. Nonparametric tests and biplots were used. It seems that smaller organizations and more immature products focus on different attributes than bigger organizations and mature products which focus more on Cost

An experience-based framework for evaluating alignment of software quality goals2015In: Software quality journal, ISSN 0963-9314, E-ISSN 1573-1367, Vol. 23, no 4, p. 567-594Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Efficient quality management of software projects requires knowledge of how various groups of stakeholders involved in software development prioritize the product and project goals. Agreements or disagreements among members of a team may originate from inherent groupings, depending on various professional or other characteristics. These agreements are not easily detected by conventional practices (discussions, meetings, etc.) since the natural language expressions are often obscuring, subjective, and prone to misunderstandings. It is therefore essential to have objective tools that can measure the alignment among the members of a team; especially critical for the software development is the degree of alignment with respect to the prioritization goals of the software product. The paper proposes an experience-based framework of statistical and graphical techniques for the systematic study of prioritization alignment, such as hierarchical cluster analysis, analysis of cluster composition, correlation analysis, and closest agreement-directed graph. This framework can provide a thorough and global picture of a team's prioritization perspective and can potentially aid managerial decisions regarding team composition and leadership. The framework is applied and illustrated in a study related to global software development where 65 individuals in different roles, geographic locations and professional relationships with a company, prioritize 24 goals from individual perception of the actual situation and for an ideal situation.

Software product quality in global software development: Finding groups with aligned goals2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The development of a software product in an organization involves various groups of stakeholders who may prioritize the qualities of the product differently. This paper presents an empirical study of 65 individuals in different roles and in different locations, including on shoring, outsourcing and off shoring, prioritizing 24 software quality aspects. Hierarchical cluster analysis is applied to the prioritization data, separately for the situation today and the ideal situation, and the composition of the clusters, regarding the distribution of the inherent groupings within each of them, is analyzed. The analysis results in observing that the roles are not that important in the clustering. However, compositions of clusters regarding the onshore-offshore relationships are significantly different, showing that the offshore participants have stronger tendency to cluster together. In conclusion, stakeholders seem to form clusters of aligned understanding of priorities according to personal and cultural views rather than their roles in software development.

Prioritization of issues and requirements by cumulative voting: A compositional data analysis framework2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cumulative Voting (CV), also known as Hundred-Point Method, is a simple and straightforward technique, used in various prioritization studies in software engineering. Multiple stakeholders (users, developers, consultants, marketing representatives or customers) are asked to prioritize issues concerning requirements, process improvements or change management in a ratio scale. The data obtained from such studies contain useful information regarding correlations of issues and trends of the respondents towards them. However, the multivariate and constrained nature of data requires particular statistical analysis. In this paper we propose a statistical framework; the multivariate Compositional Data Analysis (CoDA) for analyzing data obtained from CV prioritization studies. Certain methodologies for studying the correlation structure of variables are applied to a dataset concerning impact analysis issues prioritized by software professionals under different perspectives. These involve filling of zeros, transformation using the geometric mean, principle component analysis on the transformed variables and graphical representation by biplots and ternary plots.

Approaching the Relative Estimation Concept with Planning Poker2018In: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, Association for Computing Machinery , 2018, p. 21-25Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Simulation is a powerful instrument in the education process that can help students experience a reality context and understand complex concepts required to accomplish practitioners' tasks. The present study aims to investigate the software engineering students' perception about the usefulness of the Planning Poker technique in relation to their understanding of the relative estimation concept. We conducted a simulation exercise where students first estimated tasks applying the concepts of relative estimation based on the concepts explained in the lecture, and then to estimate tasks applying the Agile Planning Poker technique. To investigate the students' perception, we used a survey at the end of each exercise. The preliminary results did not show statistical significance on the students' confidence to estimate relatively the user stories. However, from the students' comments and feedback, there are indications that students are more confident in using Agile Planning Poker when they are asked to estimate user stories. The study will be replicated in the near future to a different group of students with a different background, to have a better understanding and also identify possible flaws of the exercise. © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery.

When and who leaves matters: Emerging results from an empirical study of employee turnover2018In: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 12TH ACM/IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON EMPIRICAL SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AND MEASUREMENT (ESEM 2018), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2018, article id a53Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Employee turnover in GSD is an extremely important issue, especially in Western companies offshoring to emerging nations. Aims: In this case study we investigated an offshore vendor company and in particular whether the employees' retention is related with their experience. Moreover, we studied whether we can identify a threshold associated with the employees' tendency to leave the particular company. Method: We used a case study, applied and presented descriptive statistics, contingency tables, results from Chi-Square test of association and post hoc tests. Results: The emerging results showed that employee retention and company experience are associated. In particular, almost 90% of the employees are leaving the company within the first year, where the percentage within the second year is 50-50%. Thus, there is an indication that the 2 years' time is the retention threshold for the investigated offshore vendor company. Conclusions: The results are preliminary and lead us to the need for building a prediction model which should include more inherent characteristics of the projects to aid the companies avoiding massive turnover waves. © 2018 ACM.

Speaker Separation Investigation2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report describes two important investigations which formed part of an overall project aimed at separating overlapping speech signals. The first investigation uses chirp signals to measure the acoustic transfer functions which would typically be found in the speaker separation project. It explains the behaviour of chirps in acoustic environments that can be further used to find the room reverberations as well, besides their relevance to measuring the transfer functions in conjunction with speaker separation. Chirps that have been used in this part are logarithmic and linear chirps. They have different lengths and are analysed in two different acoustic environments. Major findings are obtained in comparative analysis of different chirps in terms of their cross-correlations, specgrams and power spectrum magnitude. The second investigation deals with using automatic speech recognition (ASR) system to test the performance of the speaker separation algorithm with respect to word accuracy of different speakers. Speakers were speaking in two different scenarios and these were nonoverlapping and overlapping scenarios. In non-overlapping scenario speakers were speaking alone and in overlapping scenario two speakers were speaking simultaneously. To improve the performance of speaker separation in the overlapping scenario, I was working very close with my fellow colleague Mr. Holfeld who was improving the existing speech separation algorithm. After cross-examining our findings, we improved the existing speech separation algorithm. This further led to improvement in word accuracy of the speech recognition software in overlapping scenario.

Micro-Expression Extraction For Lie Detection Using Eulerian Video (Motion and Color) Magnication2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Lie-detection has been an evergreen and evolving subject. Polygraph techniques have been the most popular and successful technique till date. The main drawback of the polygraph is that good results cannot be attained without maintaining a physical contact, of the subject under test. In general, this physical contact would induce extra consciousness in the subject. Also, any sort of arousal in the subject triggers false positives while performing the traditional polygraph based tests. With all these drawbacks in the polygraph, also, due to rapid developments in the fields of computer vision and artificial intelligence, with newer and faster algorithms, have compelled mankind to search and adapt to contemporary methods in lie-detection. Observing the facial expressions of emotions in a person without any physical contact and implementing these techniques using artificial intelligence is one such method. The concept of magnifying a micro expression and trying to decipher them is rather premature at this stage but would evolve in future. Magnification using EVM technique has been proposed recently and it is rather new to extract these micro expressions from magnified EVM based on HOG features. Till date, HOG features have been used in conjunction with SVM, and generally for person/pedestrian detection. A newer, simpler and contemporary method of applying EVM with HOG features and Back-propagation Neural Network jointly has been introduced and proposed to extract and decipher the micro-expressions on the face. Micro-expressions go unnoticed due to its involuntary nature, but EVM is used to magnify them and makes them noticeable. Emotions behind the micro-expressions are extracted and recognized using the HOG features \& Back-Propagation Neural Network. One of the important aspects that has to be dealt with human beings is a biased mind. Since, an investigator is also a human and, he too, has to deal with his own assumptions and emotions, a Neural Network is used to give the investigator an unbiased start in identifying the true emotions behind every micro-expression. On the whole, this proposed system is not a lie-detector, but helps in detecting the emotions of the subject under test. By further investigation, a lie can be detected.

AUTOMATION OF A CLOUD HOSTED APPLICATION: Performance, Automated Testing, Cloud Computing2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: Software testing is the process of assessing quality of a software product to determine whether it matches with the existing requirements of the customer or not. Software testing is one of the “Verification and Validation,” or V&V, software practices. The two basic techniques of software testing are Black-box testing and White box testing. Black-box testing focuses solely on the outputs generated in response to the inputs supplied neglecting the internal components of the software. Whereas, White-box testing focuses on the internal mechanism of the software of any application. To explore the feasibility of black-box and white-box testing under a given set of conditions, a proper test automation framework needs to be deployed. Automation is deployed in order to reduce the manual effort and to perform testing continuously, thereby increasing the quality of the product.

Objectives: In this research, cloud hosted application is automated using TestComplete tool. The objective of this thesis is to verify the functionality of Cloud application known as Test data library or Test Report Analyzer through automation and to measure the impact of the automation on release cycles of the organization.

Methods: Here automation is implemented using scrum methodology which is an agile development software process. Using scrum methodology, the product with working software can be delivered to the customers incrementally and empirically with updating functionalities in it. Abstract [en]

This paper applies to the design and simulation of a shipping container made of sandwich panels. The amount of stresses acting on the body of the container is calculated and is optimized to reduce stresses for the better design output of the structure. The design aims to produce an application to reduce the tare weight of the container in order to increase the payload. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed to evaluate the strength of structures of both old and new models helps us to compare which model is better and more efficient. Complete design and analysis is performed using Autodesk Inventor.

A novel simulation framework based on information asymmetry to evaluate evacuation plan2015In: The Visual Computer, ISSN 0178-2789, E-ISSN 1432-2315, Vol. 31, no 6-8, p. 853-861Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we present a novel framework to simulate the crowd behavior under emergency situations in a confined space with multiple exits. In our work, we take the information asymmetry into consideration, which is used to model the different behaviors presented by pedestrians because of their different knowledge about the environment. We categorize the factors influencing the preferred velocity into two groups, the intrinsic and extrinsic factors, which are unified into a single space called influence space. At the same time, a finite state machine is employed to control the individual behavior. Different strategies are used to compute the preferred velocity in different states, so that our framework can produce the phenomena of decision change. Our experimental results prove that our framework can be employed to analyze the factors influencing the escape time, such as the number and location of exits, the density distribution of the crowd and so on. Thus it can be used to design and evaluate the evacuation plans. © 2015 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
