ETHICAL ISSUE: A PROBLEM IN NIGERIA INSURANCE COMPANIES2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study aimed to investigate and critically analyze claims management, an ethical issue in insurance companies in Nigeria, to find out if these insurance companies recognize it to be an ethical issue and also to find out how they handle insured’s claims. A qualitative research method was used in carrying out this study; data was sourced through interviews and by secondary data using literatures from books, journals, articles, and electronic websites. The researchers used purposive sampling to select some top insurance companies in Nigeria; in these insurance companies basically personnel working in the claims department were interviewed, also sales agents from two of these insurance companies were interviewed. Data was sourced from two insurance broking firms in Nigeria by interviewing their top personnel, and also some of the insuring public with and without insurance policies was interviewed. The analytical strategy adopted in this research work was to rely on theoretical propositions. This study made use of Jones (1991) moral intensity model. Based on the analysis of data collected during the interview, the study revealed that insurance personnel in claims administration who take decision on insured’ claims in Nigeria recognize that there is a moral dilemma in their act and they discharge this responsibility professionally and ethically sticking to the rules of the business. Also the characteristics that constitute moral intensity model; proximity, social context, probability of effect, concentration of effect and magnitude of consequence offered by Jones (1991) influence the moral decision making process and moral behavior of claims personnel in Nigeria insurance companies. But due to some challenges faced by these personnel in discharging their duty and some lapses from their side and the insured’s there have always been complaint on claims. However they acknowledge that no one is perfect therefore they are open to getting feedbacks from their clients on the way they feel about their claims which they look into and make necessary amendments where needed. This study concluded with proposition for future researchers to look into how the challenges encountered by personnel managing insured’s’ claims in insurance companies in Nigeria can be dealt with and to find out how insurance companies in Nigeria can gain the awareness of the insuring public and make them understand the terms and conditions of insurance service.

The Impact of Product Innovation on Sales Volumes of Consumer Goods2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Studies have shown that application of innovation in products and marketing as strategy is important to the survival of a firm. However, only few companies are adopting this concept as a major strategy due to their obliviousness to its imminent contribution to the corporate goal. Many of the early adopters of this concept are also failing to achieve the most from it due to their lack of proper understanding of its fundamental and benefits. This study analysed empirically the impact of product innovation on sales volume of consumer goods using Philips consumer electronics, a division of Philips B.V as a case study. Identified hypothesis concerning the relationship between product innovation and the company corporate goal were tested with the use of telephone interviews and questionnaire to stimulate responses from staff of the firm and the consumer of its products. Analysing of the responses obtained from the field study showed that lack of product innovation could affect the organisation’s profit and consumer satisfaction because of its great impact on consumers' buying decision. Monitoring and responding accordingly to changes in consumers’ taste will ensure success in product innovation. Evidently, adoption of product innovation can lead to increase in sales volume of a firm’s product. The finding of this research work will be useful to the firm used as a case study in regards to better development of its innovation funnel with feedback from market trends and consumer dynamic needs. Although, this research work used a single company for analysis, however the result of the findings can be adequately applied to other firms especially firms within the same industry.

Sustainable Microfinance2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Microfinance offers one way to combat poverty by providing access to credit and financial services to low-income borrowers. We argue that the interconnectedness of the socioeconomic and ecological system as well as the reliance on ecosystem services make it important to provide microcredit from a full sustainability perspective. We used the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, a scientific based systematic and strategic approach, to create a principle-based model of a microfinance institution operating in a socioeconomic and ecologically sustainable manner. This model was then compared with the circumstances in which these institutions currently operate. We then explored how taking a full sustainability perspective could meet current challenges and maximise opportunities. After a prioritisation process, we made recommendations on how these organisations could strategically move towards sustainability.

Signaling Over Protocols Gateways in Next-Generation Networks2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, I examined various signalling both in wired and mobile networks, with more emphasis on SIGTRAN. The SIGTRAN is the protocol suite applicable in the current new generation and next-generation networks, most especially as it enables service provider to be able to interpolate both wireline and wireless services within the same architecture. This concept is an important component in today’s Triple-play communication, and hence this thesis has provided a broad view on Signalling and Protocol Gateways in Traditional and Next Generations Networks. Signal flow in a typical new generation network was examined by carrying out discrete event simulation of UMTS network using OPNET modeller 14.5. Through both Packet-Switching (PS) and Circuit-Switching (CS) signalling, I was able to examine the QoS on a UMTS. Precisely, I looked at throughput on UMTS network by implementing WFQ and MDRR scheduling schemes.

WORKING CAPITAL MANAGEMENT IN TELECOMMUNICATION SECTOR2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT Title: Working Capital Management in Telecommunication sector: A case study of VGC telecoms Author: Gbenga Segun Akinwande Supervisor: Anders Hederstierna Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s thesis in business administration, 15 credits (ECTS). Background and Problem Discussion: The efficient management of working capital is very vital for a business survival. This is premised on the fact having too much working capital signifies inefficiency, whereas too little cash at hand signifies that the survival of business is shaky. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to study the working capital management in the small and medium scale businesses, using VGC Telecoms Company as a case study, so as to establish factors influencing working capital performance; examine how cash management, inventory management and trade credit management affects working capital management; company effectiveness in converting working capital to ready money; how working capital management impacts on the problem of slow development and to offer recommendations on possible ways of improving working capital management Method: Literatures bordering on different areas of working capital management were reviewed. Thus, this research employed qualitative and quantitative analysis; and semi- structured questions were drafted based on the issues raised from the review of various literatures. In addition, materials from journal articles, textbooks, working papers and industry practitioners are put into consideration. The use of internet and e-mails to send out questions were explored where appropriate. Analysis on the company’s financial statement was carried out in order to verify my findings. Theory: In this research, the theory section looks at various concepts that come up when analyzing the consequences of working capital management for company value and the factors that influence a company’s working capital management performance. I have therefore chosen the most common concept for the theory section. I have also tried to create a theoretical understanding for the company’s sensitivity to a workable WCM policy Analysis: In the analysis of the research findings, I employed qualitative approach to the data analysis whereby the impacts of the poor WCM on the company were discussed in depth. Conclusion: The findings corroborate the postulation of Weston et al that a company’s investment in working capital is a substantial percentage of its total investment. In case of VGC Telecoms, it is as high as 65 percent. An inefficient and ineffective management of this investment will result in slow pace of development and ultimately to the business failure. The performances of the company in the different spheres of working capital management were scored as follows:- • Cash management – 65.4 percent • Inventory management - 78.6 percent • Trade credit management and financing decisions - 60.0 percent This is an average performance of 68 percent. That is, the company’s performance is above average. This is a good performance. The financial statements as interpreted reinforce the validity of this result. The liquidity ratios are high; the collection period is short; and the cash cycle is not quite expansive. This makes it possible to sustain sufficient cash flow for the smooth running of the business. The management of working capital impacts on liquidity, investment portfolio and profitability. All these three factors are decisive in the growth or failure of a business. Hence, good performances in working capital management affects these decisive factors favourably and thus, contribute to growth and success of the business.

A Facilitating Platform for Energy & Climate Change Programs: a Case within Municipalities in Southeast Sweden2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Focus on municipal level planning has increased in the recent years. Municipal governments are primarily responsible for such planning and they do have the biggest responsibility of driving the entire municipality towards sustainability. In this research project we provide a study on some of the gaps and challenges in the current procedures faced by a few municipalities within Southeast Sweden with respect to Energy and climate change planning and implementation. It was observed that the current engagement practices, communication, and alignment of goals could potentially hinder the municipality from achieving the overall goals of sustainability. Furthermore, a complementing facilitating platform was suggested that would give municipal governments an opportunity to intervene and address some of these gaps and challenges to establish structure and control on activities, towards a sustainable municipality.

Parametric sound fields by phase-cancellation excitation of primary waves.2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

By radiating bifrequency primary waves from two ultrasonic emitters with changing the phases of the primary waves, we can obtain the sound fields that are different from the usual in‐phase excitation. Especially, for the excitation of out‐phase by 180 degrees the difference frequency wave has the directivity of almost uniformity near the acoustic axis. Additionally, the sound pressure levels of the harmonic components of the difference frequency and the primary waves as well are suppressed by 10 dB and more

An Integrated Structured Analysis Approach to Intelligent Agent Communication1998Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Intelligent multi-agent systems offer promising approaches for knowledge-intensive distributed applications. Now that such systems are becoming applied on a wider industrial scale, there is a practical need for structured analysis and design methods, similarly as exist for more conventional information and knowledge systems. This is still lacking for intelligent agent software. In this paper, we describe how the process of agent communication specification can be carried out through a structured analysis approach. The structured analysis approach we propose is an integrated extension of the CommonKADS methodology, a widely used standard for knowledge analysis and systems development. Our approach is based on and illustrated by a large-scale multi-agent application for distributed energy load management in industries and households, called Homebots, which is discussed as an extensive industrial case study.

Pragmatics of Agent Communication1998Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The process of agent communication modeling has not yet received much attention in the knowledge systems area. Conventional knowledge systems are rather simple with respect to their communication structure: often it is a straightforward question-and-answer sequence between system and end user. However, this is different in recent intelligent multi-agent systems. Therefore, agent communication aspects are now in need of a much more advanced treatment in knowledge management, acquisition and modeling. In general, a much better integration between the respective achievements of multi-agent and knowledge-based systems modeling is an important research goal. In this paper, we describe how agent communications can be specified as an extension of well-known knowledge modeling techniques. The emphasis is on showing how a structured process of communication requirements analysis proceeds, based on existing results from agent communication languages. The guidelines proposed are illustrated by and based on a large-scale industrial multi-agent application for distributed energy load management in industries and households, called Homebots. Homebots enable cost savings in energy consumption by coordinating their actions through an auction mechanism.

Homebots: Intelligent Decentralized Services for Energy Management1996Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The deregulation of the European energy market, combined with emerging ad-vanced capabilities of information technology, provides strategic opportunities for new knowledge-oriented services on the power grid. HOMEBOTS is the name we have coined for one of these innovative services: decentralized power load management at the customer side, automatically carried out by a ‘society’ of interactive house-hold, industrial and utility equipment. They act as independent intelligent agents that communicate and negotiate in a computational market economy. The knowl-edge and competence aspects of this application are discussed, using an improved version of task analysis according to the COMMONKADS knowledge methodology. Illustrated by simulation results, we indicate how customer knowledge can be mo-bilized to achieve joint goals of cost and energy savings. General implications for knowledge creation and its management are discussed.

The impact of RE process factors and organizational factors during alignment between RE and V&V: Systematic Literature Review and Survey2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: Requirements engineering (RE) and Verification and validation (V&V) areas are treated to be integrated and assure successful development of the software project. Therefore, activation of both competences in the early stages of the project will support products in meeting the customer expectation regarding the quality and functionality. However, this quality can be achieved by aligning RE and V&V. There are different practices such as requirements, verification, validation, control, tool etc. that are followed by organizations for alignment and to address different challenges faced during the alignment between RE and V&V. However, there is a requisite for studies to understand the alignment practices, challenges and factors, which can enable successful alignment between RE and V&V.

Objectives: In this study, an exploratory investigation is carried out to know the impact of factors i.e. RE process and organizational factors during the alignment between RE and V&V. The main objectives of this study are:

    1. To find the list of RE practices that facilitate alignment between RE and V&V.
    2. To categorize RE practices with respect to their requirement phases.
    3. To find the list of RE process and organizational factors that influence alignment between RE and V&V besides their impact.
    4. To identify the challenges that are faced during the alignment between RE and V&V.
    5. To obtain list of challenges that are addressed by RE practices during the alignment between RE and V&V.

Methods: In this study Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is conducted using snowballing procedure to identify the relevant information about RE practices, challenges, RE process factors and organizational factors. The studies were captured from Engineering Village database. Rigor and relevance analysis is performed to assess the quality of the studies obtained through SLR. Further, a questionnaire intended for industrial survey was prepared from the gathered literature and distributed to practitioners from the software industry in order to collect empirical information about this study. Thereafter, data obtained from industrial survey was analyzed using statistical analysis and chi-square significance test.

Results: 20 studies were identified through SLR, which are relevant to this study. After analyzing the obtained studies, the list of RE process factors, organizational factors, challenges and RE practices during alignment between RE and V&V are gathered. Thereupon, an industrial survey is conducted from the obtained literature, which has obtained 48 responses. Alignment between RE and V&V possess an impact of RE process factors and organizational factors and this is also mentioned by the respondents of the survey. Moreover, this study finds an additional RE process factors and organizational factors during the alignment between RE and V&V, besides their impact. Another contribution is, addressing the unaddressed challenges by RE practices obtained through the literature. Additionally, validation of categorized RE practices with respect to their requirement phases is carried out.

Conclusions: To conclude, the obtained results from this study will benefit practitioners for capturing more insight towards the alignment between RE and V&V. This study identified the impact of RE process factors and organizational factors during the alignment between RE and V&V along with the importance of challenges faced during the alignment between RE and V&V. This study also addressed the unaddressed challenges by RE practices obtained through literature. Respondents of the survey believe that many RE process and organizational factors have negative impact on the alignment between RE and V&V based on the size of an organization. In addition to this, validation of results for applying RE practices at different requirement phases is toted through survey. Practitioners can identify the benefits from this research and researchers can extend this study to remaining alignment practices.

‘‘Reduction in working hours’’ … a motivational tool & win-win situation for Employer, Employee & Economy2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Governments and workers have put in a great effort in regularizing the working hours and working week over the course of last one and a half century. The average work week in the world stands at 40 hours. With unemployment among all the work force in Sweden almost hitting 11 percent and in youth aged 15-24 hitting almost 27 percent. It’s definitely alarming and requires measures to reduce. Different political forces in Sweden including Green Party and left party have joined forces in reducing the working week to 30 hours. The reduction in the working hours certainly presents a solution to different issues like work life balance, quality of life and work satisfaction but is it a solution to reduce unemployment at the same time source of motivation? That is the fundamental question we have tried to answer in the pages to follow. The reduction in working hours, during the economic downturn of 2008, supported financially by Government of Germany actually helped save at least half a million jobs. Volvo Power Train saved a number of jobs in Sweden by reducing the working hours of all the employees, so did Scania, and Saab in Sweden. Toyota reduced the working hours of its employees in 1990s to increase motivation, job satisfaction and quality of life. Our research has shown that if working hours are reduced then jobs can not only be saved, but can be created as well. In the following pages you will come across information obtained through number of information sources and printed material which directly aims at looking into how reduction in working hours can reduce unemployment. Our research presents different scenarios where reduction in the hours can generate employments. The debate however is open for future researchers to test these scenarios and see if they are viable proposals and can help reduce the employment.

Urban Public Space: A Case from Developing Country2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Cities in developing world are inadequately equipped with public spaces. The increasing urbanizations trend is attracting more people to come to the cities without having proper sustainable plan for public spaces. However, this social public place holds the important function for urban well-being and collective recognition. This is the place where human can participate as fully fledged social subjects in complex civic life. Unfortunately, in most cases the provision of public space in these cities is always neglected or poorly integrated in planning legislations. So, in many cases community people make their own ways of social interaction that gives public space a new definition. Khulna, one of the divisional cities of Bangladesh, is going through the similar developing country situation. Lack of fund and space restricts development agencies to make new public spaces in this city. On the other hand management and coordination challenges between multilevel planning authorities also making existing public spaces malfunctioned. Sustainably planned, created and managed public spaces are hence urged for the cities of developing world to get livable and healthy urban environment.

    Abstract [sv]

The lived experiences of patients with long- term urinary catheter in Cameroon2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of part one of the study was to describe the experiences of patients living with the urinary catheter from a literature study of existing research studies. Databases such as CINAHL, Medline, and PsyINFO were used in searching for the documents of which ten articles were found to be relevant in relation to the aim of the study. It was found that most of the studies were carried out in New York. Hence there was a need for other researches to be done in other communities. The aim of the empirical study was to describe the lived experiences of patients with long term indwelling urinary catheter in Cameroon. A purposive sample of six subjects with ages ranging from 34-78 yrs from Mbingo baptist hospital living with the indwelling urinary catheter were included in the study with the duration of living with the urinary catheter ranging from 3months –2,1/2 yrs. The data collection method was a face-to-face interview between the author and the participants that lasted from 30-1hr, which were audiotape and transcribed from Pidgin to English by means of the content analytic method. Themes such as, communication gap, financial difficulties, loss of ones dignity, pain, the device being important and unimportant, the device a ‘killer’, hindrance to daily activities, and consciousness of the proper functioning of the urinary catheter. From the interview with the participants with the long term indwelling urinary catheter, participants faced a lot of difficulties and even during their meetings with the healthcare professional, which showed lack of understanding between the participants and the healthcare professionals. Interview with the participants showed that for proper functioning of the catheter to be achieved care was emphasized on the drainage tube and clamp. Health care professional should be conscious of the fact that communication should be a two way process and that it should involve all the parties who are involve. There is also the need for the health care professionals to educate the patients according to their individual needs.

Digital models of manufacturing: with emphasis on titanium welding for early product development2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis work is part of the BTH research lab, focusing on developing the early product development, by analyzing how to integrate the manufacturing process with the early design process. A known problem in the manufacturing industry is the knowledge gap between the designers and the manufacturing process. Where in the early stages of the product development a knowledge regarding the manufacture process is needed. This is in many cases ignored by the designers because it is commonly thought that the responsibility of selecting the manufacturing processes for a product falls upon the manufacturers, despite the fact that the manufacturing processes in reality is highly dependent upon the design choses such as materials, size, shape, finishing and tolerances of the product. To mitigate this problem a variations of product ‘team’ approaches have been used where the idea is to involve a multitude of people with the necessary experience to produce a ‘production friendly product’. Those approaches have a few drawbacks mainly the problem of finding people with the relevant experiences or that the expertise only covers the manufacturing processes already used in the organization, losing the opportunity to benefit from any alternative manufacturing process.

This thesis focuses on how the welding manufacturing technic, analysis can be integrated into the design process with the help of a digital model?

To improve the communications between the manufacturers and designers, two excel files were developed. The first excel file aimed at the manufacturers where they can present the specific machines used in the workshop. Focusing on specific machine and workshops instead of on the general welding method will give the designers a better understanding of the feasibility of producing their design in a specific workshop instead of focusing on a specific manufacturing method.

The second excel file is aimed at calculating and comparing the weld methods where the cost and requirements are derived for general welding methods and compared with the machine specifications gathered from the manufacturers using the first excel file. To assess the excel files, a parametrized CAD model of the rear engine turbine structure was developed, and three different cases were used to evaluate the developed excel files.

The values used are presented in Appendix A: Table 11–15, and were gathered from public sources. Values were also approximated using regression analysis.

Analysis of packet loss and delay variation on QoE for H.264 andWebM/VP8 Codecs2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The popularity of multimedia services over Internet has increased in the recent years. These services include Video on Demand (VoD) and mobile TV which are predominantly growing, and the user expectations towards the quality of videos are gradually increasing. Different video codec’s are used for encoding and decoding. Recently Google has introduced the VP8 codec which is an open source compression format. It is introduced to compete with existing popular codec namely H.264/AVC developed by ITU-T Video Coding Expert Group (VCEG), as by 2016 there will be a license fee for H.264. In this work we compare the performance of H.264/AVC and WebM/VP8 in an emulated environment. NetEm is used as an emulator to introduce delay/delay variation and packet loss. We have evaluated the user perception of impaired videos using Mean Opinion Score (MOS) by following the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Recommendations Absolute Category Rating (ACR) and analyzed the results using statistical methods. It was found that both video codec’s exhibit similar performance in packet loss, But in case of delay variation H.264 codec shows better results when compared to WebM/VP8. Moreover along with the MOS ratings we also studied the effect of user feelings and online video watching experience impacts on their perception.

A study of value in agile software development organizations2017In: Journal of Systems and Software, ISSN 0164-1212, E-ISSN 1873-1228, Vol. 125, p. 271-288Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Agile manifesto focuses on the delivery of valuable software. In Lean, the principles emphasise value, where every activity that does not add value is seen as waste. Despite the strong focus on value, and that the primary critical success factor for software intensive product development lies in the value domain, no empirical study has investigated specifically what value is. This paper presents an empirical study that investigates how value is interpreted and prioritised, and how value is assured and measured. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 23 participants from 14 agile software development organisations. The contribution of this study is fourfold. First, it examines how value is perceived amongst agile software development organisations. Second, it compares the perceptions and priorities of the perceived values by domains and roles. Third, it includes an examination of what practices are used to achieve value in industry, and what hinders the achievement of value. Fourth, it characterises what measurements are used to assure, and evaluate value-creation activities.

An exploratory study of waste in software development organizations using agile or lean approaches: A multiple case study at 14 organizations2019In: Information and Software Technology, ISSN 0950-5849, E-ISSN 1873-6025, Vol. 107, p. 78-94Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context: The principal focus of lean is the identification and elimination of waste from the process with respect to maximizing customer value. Similarly, the purpose of agile is to maximize customer value and minimize unnecessary work and time delays. In both cases the concept of waste is important. Through an empirical study, we explore how waste is approached in agile software development organizations. Objective: This paper explores the concept of waste in agile/lean software development organizations and how it is defined, used, prioritized, reduced, or eliminated in practice Method: The data were collected using semi-structured open-interviews. 23 practitioners from 14 embedded software development organizations were interviewed representing two core roles in each organization. Results: Various wastes, categorized in 10 different categories, were identified by the respondents. From the mentioned wastes, not all were necessarily waste per se but could be symptoms caused by wastes. From the seven wastes of lean, Task-switching was ranked as the most important, and Extra-features, as the least important wastes according to the respondents’ opinion. However, most companies do not have their own or use an established definition of waste, more importantly, very few actively identify or try to eliminate waste in their organizations beyond local initiatives on project level. Conclusion: In order to identify, recognize and eliminate waste, a common understanding, and a joint and holistic view of the concept is needed. It is also important to optimize the whole organization and the whole product, as waste on one level can be important on another, thus sub-optimization should be avoided. Furthermore, to achieve a sustainable and effective waste handling, both the short-term and the long-term perspectives need to be considered. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Low Complexity Channel Estimation for OFDM Systems Based on LS and MMSE Estimators’2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we investigate the block-type pilot channel estimation for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The estimation is based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator and the least square (LS) estimator. We derive the MMSE and LS estimators’ architecture and investigate their performances. We prove that the MMSE estimator performance is better but computational complexity is high, contrary the LS estimator has low complexity but poor performance. For reducing complexity we proposed two different solutions which are the Simplified Least Square (SLS) estimator and the modified MMSE estimator. We evaluate estimator’s performance on basis of mean square error and symbol error rate for 16 QAM systems. We also evaluate estimator’s computational complexity.

Linear Unequal Error Protection for Region of Interest Coded Images over Wireless Channels2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, an unequal error protection scheme for transmitting JPEG2000 images over wireless channel is investigated. The rapid growth of wireless communication has resulted in a demand for robust transmission of compressed images over wireless networks. The challenge of robust transmission is to protect the compressed image data against the impairments of the radio channel, in such a way as to maximize the received image quality. However, for highly compressed images, it would be beneficial that regions of interest (ROI) are prioritized for interpretability. The thesis addresses this problem; investigating unequal error protection for transmitting JPEG2000 compressed images. More particularly, the results reported in this thesis provide guidance concerning the implementation of stronger error correction coding schemes (Golay code) for ROI and comparatively weaker coding (Hamming code) for non-ROI image spaces. Such unequal error protection can be utilized by the base station for transmitting JPEG2000-encoded images over next generation wireless networks.

On sphere detection for OFDM based MIMO systems2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The mobile wireless communication systems has been growing fast and continuously over the past two decades. Therefore, in order to fulfill the demand for this rapid growth, the standardization bodies along with wireless researchers and mobile operators around the world have been constantly working on new technical specifications. An important problem in modern communication is known as NP complete problem in the Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection of signals transmitting over Multiple Input Multiple Output channel of the OFDM transceiver system. Development of the Sphere Decoder (SD) as a result of the rapid advancement in signal processing techniques provides ML detection for MIMO channels at polynomial time complexity average case. There are weaknesses in the existing SDs. The sphere decoder performance is very sensitive for the most current proposals in order to choose the search radius parameter. At high spectral efficiencies SNR is low or as the problem dimension is high and the complexity coefficient can become very large too. Digital communications of detecting a vector of symbols has importance as, is encountered in several different applications. These symbols are as the finite alphabet and transmitted over a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with Gaussian noise. There are no limitation to the detection of symbols spatially multiplexed over a multiple-antenna channel and the multi user detection problem. Efficient algorithms are considered for the detection problems and have recognized well. The algorithm of sphere decoder, orders has optimal performance considering the error probability and this has proved extremely efficient in terms of computational complexity for moderately sized problems in case of signal to noise ratio. At high SNR the algorithm has a polynomial average complexity and it is understood the algorithm has an exponential worst case complexity. The efficiency of the algorithm is ordered the exponential rate derivation of growth. Complexity is positive for the finite SNR and small in the high SNR. To achieve the sphere decoding solution applying Schnorr-Euchner by Maximum likelihood method , Depth-first Stack-based Sequential decoding is used. This thesis focuses on the receiver part of the transceiver system and takes a good look at the near optimal algorithm for sphere detection of a vector of symbols transmitted over MIMO channel. The analysis and algorithms are general in nature.

Agile Process Recommendations for a Market-driven Company2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this master thesis problems in a small market-driven software development company are discussed. Problems such as fast changes in the company are a result of the constantly changing market. The fast changes must be managed within the company with tailored process covering the needs like short time-to-market. Misunderstandings when managing ideas from marketing and challenging issues such as communication gaps between marketing staff and developers are discussed. These problem areas are identified by the case study through interviews of selected staff. The problems adhere from fast changes and lack of processes and structures. This paper has recommended several points influenced by agile software development with Scrum and XP. The recommendations are chosen to fit the problem areas identified by the interviews. They will work as a starting point for the company to improve the situation and to use XP and Scrum for further improvements.

The Challenge of Usability Evaluation of Online Social Networks with a Focus on Facebook2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today’s era online social networks are getting extensive popularity among internet users. People are using online social networks for different purposes like sharing information, chatting with friends, family and planning to hang out. It is then no surprise that online social network should be easy to use and easily understandable. Previously many researchers have evaluated different online social networks but there is no such study which addresses usability concerns about online social network with a focus on Facebook on an academic level (using students as subjects). The main rationale behind this study is to find out efficiency of different usability testing techniques from social network’s point of view, with a focus on Facebook, and issues related to usability. To conduct this research, we have adopted the combination of both qualitative and quantitative approach. Graduate students from BTH have participated in usability tests. Our findings are that although think aloud is more efficient then remote testing, but this difference is not very significant. We found from survey that different usability issues are in Facebook profile, media, Picture Tagging, Chatting etc.

Usability of a GNU/Linux Distribution from Novice User’s Perspective2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The term Open Source Software (OSS) has been around for a long time in the world of computer science. Open source software development is a process by which we can manufacture economical and qualitative software and its source could be re-use in the improvement of the software. The success of OSS relies on several factors, e.g. usability, functionality, market focus etc. But in the end how popular the software will be measured by the number of users downloading the software and how much the software is usable to the users. Open Source Software achieve the status for stability, security and functionality. Most of this software has been utilized by expert level users of IT. But from the general users or the non-computer user’s point of view the usability issues of Open source software has been faced the most criticism [25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30]. This factor i.e. the usability issues of general user is also responsible for the limited distribution of the open source software [24]. The development process should apply the “user-centered” methodology [25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30]. In this thesis paper the issues of usability in OSS development and how the usability of open source software can be improved will be discussed. Beside this I investigate the usability quality of free Open Source Linux-based operating system Ubuntu and try to find out the usability standards of this OSS.

Ventilation systems in Volvo Cars Body Components2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this Master thesis work two types of ventilation system, mixed system and displacement system at the factory premises of Volvo Cars Body Components (VCBC) are investigated. A computer simulation technique was implemented to study the behavior of air movement and temperature distribution inside the factory for the two systems. The commercial CFD program Flovent is used for simulation purpose. Model verification was carried out with the measurements made. Results showed quite good agreement between these two values. The current model has then been used to predict the temperature distributions and air flow movement for different climate scenarios. Energy calculations were also made in order to find out the energy used by two systems annually. The results from the simulations showed that the displacement system gave better performance in every case in thermal comfort aspect, whereas in the energy aspect it was found that the displacement system used more energy annually compared to mixed system.

A dynamic hybrid antenna/relay selection scheme for the multiple-access relay channel2014In: 2014 11TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS (ISWCS), IEEE , 2014, p. 594-599Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We propose a dynamic hybrid antenna/relay selection scheme for multiple-access relay systems. The proposed scheme aims to boost the system throughput while keeping a good error performance. By using the channel state information, the destination node performs a dynamic selection between the signals provided by the multi-antenna relay, located in the inter-cell region, and the relay nodes geographically distributed over the cells. The multi-antenna relay and the single-antenna relay nodes employ the decode-remodulate-and-forward and amplify-and-forward protocols, respectively. Results reveal that the proposed scheme offers a good tradeoff between spectral efficiency and diversity gain, which is one of the main requirements for the next generation of wireless communications systems.

Post-stroke depression: Hur sjuksköterskor kan identifiera tidiga tecken på depression hos patienter som överlevt stroke2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Generation and evaluation of collision geometry based on drawings2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background. Many video games allow for creative expression. Attractive Interactive AB is developing such a game, in which players draw their own levels using pen and paper. For such a game to work, collision geometry needs to be generated from photos of hand-drawn video game levels.

Objectives. The main goal of the thesis is to create an algorithm for generating collision geometry from photos of hand-drawn video game levels and to determine whether the generated geometry can replace handcrafted geometry. Handcrafted geometry is manually created using vector graphics editing tools.

Methods. A method for generating collision geometry from photos of drawings is implemented. The quality of the generated geometry is evaluated and compared to handcrafted geometry in terms of vertex count and positional accuracy. Ground truths are used to determine the positional accuracy of collision geometry by calculating the resemblance of the created collision geometry and the respective ground truth.

Results. The generated geometry has a higher positional accuracy and on average a lower vertex count than the handcrafted geometry. Performance measurements for two different configurations of the algorithm are presented.

Conclusions. Collision geometry generated by the presented algorithm has a higher quality than handcrafted geometry. Thus, the generated geometry can replace handcrafted geometry.

Lärande utvärdering: ESF-projektet Klara Livet : Implementeringsfasen 2013-20142014Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Följeutvärderingsrapport2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Försvarsbeslut 2004: Försvarsbeslutsprocessen sett ur ett kommunalpolitiskt perspektiv2005Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

How Critical can you be as an Ongoing-evaluator?2010In: International Journal of Action Research, ISSN 1861-1303, E-ISSN 1861-9916, Vol. 6, no 2-3, p. 256-287Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses experiences of on-going evaluation within a project funded by the EU Structural Funds. A question that is particularly illustrated is how we as on-going evaluators have handled the dilemma between closeness and involvement in the project in relation to distance and a critical approach. This dilemma is standard within action- and interactive research and becomes particularly evident in a concrete reality within a project. The problem is important to illustrate, especially considering the fact that the on-going evaluation task is politically governed, that is, the EU requires that the customary evaluation be replaced with an on-going evaluation. Furthermore, on-going evaluation finds itself in a developmental phase where discussions are carried on about how to define the concept and also on how the role as an on-going evaluator should be worked out. A possible outcome of this could be that the on-going evaluation becomes far too uncritical, or critical, and with that not come up to the expectations that are placed. In this article the point of departure is that the task of the on-going evaluator is to follow the development in a project vis-á-vis established goals with the purpose of creating practice-relevant knowledge. We also discuss the balancing that exists between being supportive of progress, giving constructive criticism and not being regarded as far too critical. After having worked in an innovative development project for two years, we have been strengthened in our understanding that the interactive research approach, concept usage, theoretical connection and methodological knowledge constitute imperative demands in order to handle the changing between closeness and distance

    I vardagen konstrueras jämställdhet2004Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Projekt Centrum för telemedicin: Följeutvärderingsrapport2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Team learning activities: Reciprocal learning through the development of a mediating tool for sustainable learning2012In: Learning Organization, ISSN 0969-6474, E-ISSN 1758-7905, Vol. 19, no 6, p. 456-468Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to show how a model for sustainable learning has been formed in the meetings between practitioners and researchers. Design/methodology/approach: With the point of departure in an interactive research approach, the authors have worked with learning and common knowledge development. Empirical data were collected from nine learning seminars, which were carried out within the framework of an EU project. Findings: It is shown by means of empirical examples from an ongoing EU project how the pedagogic method of learning seminars came to be a mediating tool for reciprocal learning between researchers, project leaders and project participants. Originality/value: The learning seminars constituted an important part of a reflexive learning process where the learning consists of both practicable and theoretically anchored knowledge. Together with the project participants, the authors developed a model for sustainable learning. This model consists of a reflection model, which rests on four fundamental conditions; pedagogic leadership, the learning group, problem areas/situation and time aspects. This article fills a significant knowledge gap in terms of the development of learning within organizations.

Kartläggning av chefers vardag i Karlskrona kommuns samlade verksamheter2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Improving Quality of Experience through Performance Optimization of Server-Client Communication2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In software engineering it is important to consider how a potential user experiences the system during usage. No software user will have a satisfying experience if they perceive the system as slow, unresponsive, unstable or hiding information. Additionally, if the system restricts the users to only having a limited set of actions, their experience will further degrade. In order to evaluate the effect these issues have on a user‟s perceived experience, a measure called Quality of Experience is applied.

In this work the foremost objective was to improve how a user experienced a system suffering from the previously mentioned issues, when searching for large amounts of data. To achieve this objective the system was evaluated to identify the issues present and which issues were affecting the user perceived Quality of Experience the most. The evaluated system was a warehouse management system developed and maintained by Aptean AB‟s office in Hässleholm, Sweden. The system consisted of multiple clients and a server, sending data over a network. Evaluation of the system was in form of a case study analyzing its performance, together with a survey performed by Aptean staff to gain knowledge of how the system was experienced when searching for large amounts of data. From the results, three issues impacting Quality of Experience the most were identified: (1) interaction; limited set of actions during a search, (2) transparency; limited representation of search progress and received data, (3) execution time; search completion taking long time.

After the system was analyzed, hypothesized technological solutions were implemented to resolve the identified issues. The first solution divided the data into multiple partitions, the second decreased data size sent over the network by applying compression and the third was a combination of the two technologies. Following the implementations, a final set of measurements together with the same survey was performed to compare the solutions based on their performance and improvement gained in perceived Quality of Experience.

The most significant improvement in perceived Quality of Experience was achieved by the data partitioning solution. While the combination of solutions offered a slight further improvement, it was primarily thanks to data partitioning, making that technology a more suitable solution for the identified issues compared to compression which only slightly improved perceived Quality of Experience. When the data was partitioned, updates were sent more frequently and allowed the user not only a larger set of actions during a search but also improved the information available in the client regarding search progress and received data. While data partitioning did not improve the execution time it offered the user a first set of data quickly, not forcing the user to idly wait, making the user experience the system as fast. The results indicated that to increase the user‟s perceived Quality of Experience for systems with server-client communication, data partitioning offered several opportunities for improvement.

3D och kommunal fysisk planering2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mellankommunal samverkan och demokrati: en fallstudie av Familjen Helsingborg2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vardagsfotografier: Inspiration för scenskapande av bilder2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is an increasing amount of pictures taken everyday and thus an increase of passive pictures in our personal archives. In order to reactivate the passive pictures this bachelor thesis asks the research question what can inspire the everyday photographer to use their picture archive to create new image scenes? The aim of this analysis is to find an inspiration source to encourage the everyday photographers to use their passive images to create new image scenes. The further aim is also to inform and encourage a discussion about the everyday photography and the growing amount of pictures. As a foundation for our design process we have explored a variety of research within the field of everyday photography, personal archives and pictures as memories. We have during our design process also used a combination of methods to create and evolve ideas, for instance brainstorming, mindmapping and the “why-method”. The methods workshop and crowdsourcing were also used as a way to invite other people into the process. As a whole our process has revolved around the concept of messiness as we encountered a dilemma that turned our previous attitude towards the thesis upside down. Our design and conclusion, BuildBild, emerged through our method creating scenes of transparent images which is based on the idea of pictures printed on plastic. BuildBild is a playful tool which is meant to inspire everyday photographers to reactivate their passive pictures through creative scenes.
