    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine whether hierarchically defined groups differ in their perceptions of how organizational distance has changed following a radical organizational change that saw one hierarchical level eliminated from the organizations’ structure. Interviews were conducted with employees atdifferent hierarchical levels, from the same workplace, who all went through anorganizational change during the spring of 2013.

The change initiative that was implemented consisted of the removal of one hierarchical level from the organizational structure. In the two years since the implementation this study observed noticeable reductions in both structural and cultural distance within the organization, while the physical distance between workers and the closest ranking production-manager had increased. The study shows how communication and interaction across hierarchical levels contributes in reducing organizational distance, while structural factors remain which act to maintain existing distances. The importance of frequent communication throughout the change process will, according to the findings, promote enthusiasm and belief in the change initiative throughout the organization.

An Emerging Innovation Agenda: Leveraging Intrapreneur’s Influence on the Dynamic Capabilities of a Company2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to identify and establish the relationship between intrapreneurs and the Dynamic Capabilities (DC) framework in a company. This relationship aided us in exploring whether intrapreneurs could positively influence the sensing, seizing and transforming of innovations. Findings: This paper explored and identified a possible applicability of intrapreneurial theory and dynamic capabilities in the Innovation Value Chain. Ten intrapreneurial skills that could be carried out by an Innovation Agent (IA) in various parts of the innovation chain were identified. The results showed how these intrapreneurial skills could positively influence the dynamic capabilities and contribute to an improvement in sensing, seizing and transforming of idea in full-scale innovations. Although it was shown that intrapreneurs positively influence the sensing, seizing and transforming as separate elements of the dynamic capabilities framework, it was also discovered that intrapreneurs play a crucial role in managing the ‘dynamic capabilities’ and ‘Innovation Value Chain’ as a whole. They do this by synthesizing and connecting the separate elements. In addition, a roadmap illustrating the focus areas of these intrapreneurial skills within the innovation chain was formulated during the study. Research Implications: The research findings contribute to the understanding the Innovation Value Chain through the lens of the Dynamic Capabilities Framework which consists of sensing, seizing and transforming and how the role of intrapreneurship could positively influence the dynamic capabilities and contribute to a better innovation process. Practical Implications: The practical implications of this study contribute to the innovation management of big high tech global companies. The use of intrapreneurs contributes to addressing the bureaucracy and innovation barriers that big companies usually create as part of their organizational structure and culture. Although it was discovered that all employees and managers should act as intrapreneurs, the research showed that in big global companies there is a need for a separate role of Innovation Agent, who would be responsible for seeing the ‘big picture of the innovation process’, supporting and navigating the employees with innovative ideas through the complexity of innovation process, and playing diverse intrapreneurial roles in order to creatively address the barriers to innovation in the company.

Assessment of Sustainability Maturity Models for Business Transformation2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Business organisations, given their size, influence, and global impact on finite planetary resources, are the key economic drivers contributing to unsustainable growth. Sustainability Maturity Models (SMMs) were developed as a tool to assist organisations to recognise and incorporate practices identified as pivotal to achieving business transformation. The Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD) approach was used to develop an analytical tool to assess the robustness of two of the aspects of SMMs, specifically structure and process. Interviews with model designers were also conducted. The research team identified key strengths limitations of SMMs.

The analysis revealed that SMMs have strength in starting the conversation with leadership and charting the way ahead for organizations by clearly defining the maturity level success criteria.

These findings confirm the significant potential of SMMs infused by supporting process tools, to be a strong foundation for organisations on their sustainability journeys, aiding overall transformation of businesses. This in turn has the potential to shift the role of businesses in the larger socio-ecological system from being contributors to the sustainability challenge, to becoming active providers of solutions.

Performance Measurement Framework for Product-Service System Development: A Balanced Scorecard Approach2013Inngår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP), ISSN 1740-2832, E-ISSN 1740-2840, Vol. 9, nr 2, s. 146-164Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Product-Service System (PSS) paradigm is recognized as a means for companies to increase the value perceived by the customers, thus gaining competitive advantage beyond traditional ‘pure product’ offerings. Researches have shown the necessity to rethink design processes in a PSS context, in order to drive the successful integration of product and service features in early design phases. In the last few years, several new approaches have been proposed, however little attention has been paid on how to translate these approaches into action and on how to evaluate their performances and effectiveness. This paper proposes a framework for analysing the performances in PSS development process using a Balanced Scorecard approach, as a tool to guide the implementation and the evaluation of new methods and tools in the early design phases. The paper starts with discussing the main challenges encountered when designing PSS, and then, adopting an aerospace industry as an example, to propose an application of the Balance Scorecard for the implementation and measurement of PSS development. Finally, the main pros and cons are discussed in relation to strengths and weaknesses of using balanced scorecard in PSS development. The framework developed in this paper can provide a useful guidance for the managers in measuring the performances of the PSS development process.

Evolution of Product Management in Web 2.02009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to study how product management is practiced in emerging startups in today‟s hi-tech world with emphasis on companies working in Web 2.0. Following key problems were assessed: 1. Often, most companies do not have a defined produc management approach. 2. Product managers use their experience when assigned products rather than a uniform approach throughout the organization suggesting confusions within the teams. 3. Most Tech-startups are too focused on technological advancements that they ignore their intended clients – a reason why products fail.

Study on the Relationship between Business Planning and SMEs or Individual Entrepreneurship2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Objective: The objective of this study is to identify the role of business planning in SMEs. Attempts were made to figure out why the business planning is used and in what extent the planning are used by the entrepreneurs. In such case, studies were made to find whether the entrepreneurs use the business plan to achieve higher performance in their business or not. We assumed that a well developed plan leads to convenient access to finance and thereby improving the performance through various measures Methodology: In order to carry on the research, different literature and articles have been read extensively to structure the theoretical framework. To test our objective we have extensively studied literatures, journals and articles along with carrying out a telephone interview on a short number of specific questions. Conclusion: The analysis and conclusion were based on the literatures and the interviews. We relied on a response of 8 SMEs between one to five years old to test our hypothesis. We were able to see the positive relationship between business planning and bank finance. But the data doesn‟t reveal that planning had any significantly direct relation with improving the performance of the business but it does have positive benefits. The findings of this research gives the idea that a business plan is useful in other context besides attracting finance like as a guide, for increasing management efficiency. The respondent also supported those facts but could not provide any significant evidence to their assumptions. Lastly, based on the outcome of the study some recommendations were offered to the prospective entrepreneurs and interest people.

Preferences in e-Commerce Among Men, Women, and Mothers of Young Children in the US2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our research is to examine differences in e-commerce preferences between men, women, and mothers with small children (in the US). Various website factors have been established in previous studies as critical to e-commerce success. However, there are few studies that investigate how these factors vary in importance among different user groups, for example men, women, or mothers with young children. Increased understanding of these group’s preferences can help companies market themselves more effectively to these groups. A survey was distributed to residents of the US, asking respondents to rank the relative importance of 16 e-commerce features, as well as to provide performance ratings for the implementation of these features by their favorite Internet retailer. The data collected from this survey was analyzed to evaluate significant group differences in their prioritization of importance, as well as perceived performance, of the features and of three constructs (information quality, system quality, and customer-relations quality), which corresponded to more general characteristic groupings of these features. These measures were used to help identify potential performance gaps, which might serve as opportunities for companies to better meet the e-retail expectations of different customer groups. Differences in the importance of features and constructs within each of the groups were consistent with previous studies. A number of gender differences were found in the relative importance of various features, but no gender differences were found at the more general construct level. There were no significant differences in importance values between mothers and non-mothers at either the feature or construct level. However, numerous differences between the groups were found in performance ratings at both feature and construct levels. Most significant was the lower level of satisfaction among mothers, for all features and constructs. Because of a high proportion of respondents listing Amazon.com as favorite e-retailer, separate analyses were performed of these respondents and of the other “non-Amazon” respondents. These analyses showed even greater dissatisfaction among the non-Amazon mothers. In fact, Amazon performance ratings were higher than those of the non-Amazon companies for all constructs and groups, except that IQ performance for women, and especially for non-mothers, was relatively low and of possible concern.

Valuation of Securities on Inactive Markets2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: The main topic of the master thesis is Valuation of Securities on Inactive Markets. Securities quoted on inactive market have been investigated to present how their fair value can be efficiently measured. Securities quoted on inactive market can have limited or unreliable inputs and the valuation process can become time and money consuming. Financial professional face similar problems while valuing financial assets on inactive markets. Relevance of the topic: The master thesis might be of particular interest to investment and asset management companies which can get an opportunity to share their experiences and gain from the knowledge exchange. Method: One asset management company and three audit companies have been contacted for collecting information from different perspectives. asset management company has practical experience on conducting valuation of inactively traded securities and audit companies suggest how valuation should be done. Results have been collected through surveys and interviews to all selected companies. Then the qualitative approach has been applied on the collected results. Main findings: Even though most of the answers to the questionnaire were different, as the companies followed generally accepted international standards, their view on the valuation of inactively traded securities was relatively common. Companies admitted that the main problems in the valuation of securities quoted on inactive market are the limited access to market quotes, high spreads on the market, unreliable market information, limited access to financial data of the valued companies and considerable amount of inactively traded securities. Valuation based on multiples is most commonly used by the companies. Sometimes the combination of methods for example price of recent transaction, DCF and net assets can be applied and it is up to the investment manager to decide what methods to use. Summary of recommendations offered by the interviewed companies concerning valuation of inactively traded securities is presented at the end of the master thesis.

Evaluation of leadership and organizational performance in small scale industries in Nigeria: a case of selected small scale industries in Aba,Abia state,Nigeria2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

From time immemorial, the role of leaders in ensuring excellent organizational performance can not be over emphasized. The need for adequate motivation, suitable working environment, compensation and efficient communication between employers and employees are important to promoting excellent organization performance. Though studies on motivation and leadership role amongst employees are well studied in urban centers in developed countries, less could be said of rural centers in developing countries like Nigeria. Therefore, it was important to evaluate leadership and organizational performance in small- scale industries in Aba, Abia state, Nigeria. The evaluation was done through use of questionnaires with questions tailored towards determining: the relationship between leadership and organizational performance, pattern of leadership and the extent it has affected organizational performance, the factors responsible for worker’s low performance and how leadership style has affected labor management relations and productivity in three selected small scale industries in the study area. After analyzing the result with Chi-square, it was concluded that to attain the objectives of small-scale industries in Aba, Abia state Nigeria, it was necessary that leadership recognizes the needs of the workers, employ appropriate motivational tool such as promotion of staff based on merit and skills, provide suitable working environment and provide an appropriate leadership style that will encourage free flow of information among employer, superior officers and other employees.

Hur olika lärstilar påverkar individens upplevelse av feedback2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Measuring Innovation2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to conduct an on-site survey of IKEA Of Sweden, Älmhult (IKEA 2010b), with the aim to determine if IKEA Of Sweden, as an empirical case, innovates within its organization. Measuring innovation is achieved by investigating the level of alignment of the daily operational activities employed by the IKEA Of Sweden organization, with key, modern managerial theorists in the field of innovation and organizational structure; namely, Henry Chesbrough’s Open Innovation paradigm and Michael Hammer’s reengineering framework. The results are discussed; namely, that a methodological, innovative structure facilitating the discovery, execution, and measurement of ideas is not implemented. The on-site survey involved a qualitative technique to collect information via four departments; namely, the Product Development department, the Packaging department, the Material and Technology Development department, and HR department. There was one interviewee respondent in each department. The collected information was augmented with approved, roll descriptions, and the IKEA testimony (EMU 2010). All surveyed departments act as embedded sub-cases within the overall holistic study. The questioning employed was open-ended, enabling the collected answers be subjected to further analysis. Objective analysis is achieved via the Use Case technique; utilizing the research methodologies used by Robert K. Yin, as an empirical inquiry where more than one source of evidence is used (Yin 1984).

Measuring perceived organizational support in a culturally and contractually diverse organization2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Subcontracting is an option available to modern organizations that aim to enhance their competitive position via the use of externally employed resources. While organizations try to become more productive and cost efficient in their outsourcing efforts the question of a possible impact of cultural and employment differences on organizational support, employee commitment and subsequently organizational performance remain suitable. This thesis investigates the impact of cultural distance and subcontractor distance on perceived organizational support. Perceived organizational support is considered amongst the key factors in the social exchange between employees and their employer and directly impacts employee commitment, attitudes and organizational performance. This research investigates how organizational supports provided by an engineering company in Denmark and its vendor are perceived by the two groups of culturally and contractually diverse employees. Both sets of employees were surveyed and the results were compared against stated hypotheses. Data for this research was collected through a questionnaire survey from a sample of subcontracted foreign employees and host employees. Several semi structured interviews were also conducted with the host organization employees and subcontracted foreign employees in order to ensure a quality verification of the data received from the survey. The findings of the study suggest that there is no direct link between perceived organizational support and cultural distance as the results of the subcontracted foreign employees are equivalent to those received from their Danish counterparts. Surprisingly, perceived organizational support of subcontracted employees rated higher towards the host organization than towards the vendor organization, their immediate employer. The current research provides supporting evidence that subcontracted foreign employees have dual commitment to both organizations, with higher level of commitment to the host organization. The proposed hypotheses were not confirmed. The results suggest that cultural distance has no significant impact on perceived organizational support for both the host and vendor organization employees. The study extends our understanding of organizational commitment that organizations can obtain from their contingent employees and the empirical findings provide us with a better understanding of the methods that can be used to achieve organizational goals. In summary, although organizations have to be mindful of possible challenges that outsourcing arrangements may bring due to cultural and contractual differences, there is no direct evidence of cultural distance impacting on employee attitude and commitment in this scenario. Organizational support provided by organizations will be perceived and appreciated regardless of cultural differences and employment status of its permanent and contingent employees.

Finanskris & lågkonjunktur – konsekvenser för åkerier och dess anställda2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Attityder och varumärkeslojalitet inom snabbmatsbranschen2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Retention of IT Consultants: How to Grow Employee Loyalty – the case of T-company2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Most IT / Telecommunication consulting companies suffer high employee turnover. Engaged and satisfied employees are more likely to stay with their companies. Identifying motivation and satisfaction factors for IT consultants is therefore of great importance in increasing employee retention. The purpose of this research is to investigate what are the most important motivation and satisfaction factors for IT consultants, what causes consultants to stay and what are the main reasons for leaving their companies. Understanding IT consultants' motivation and needs could help IT consulting companies to lower turnover, and retain good employees by satisfying their needs as much as is reasonable.

Sponsringstrenderna hos de svenska storföretagen2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

How age diversity on the Board of Directors affects Firm Performance2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

A great number of studies have shown that the composition of the board of directors can have a significant impact upon firm performance. Early studies on board composition focused on factors such as independence of directors, with the impact of cognitive diversity in decision making gaining recognition only in the last few years. Recent diversity studies have focused on gender diversity with interesting but mixed results. We further explore the relationship between diversity and firm performance by studying the companies listed on the OMX Stockholm exchange between 2005 and 2009. Proportionally selecting one third of companies and every other year - total sample size of 258 measurements - we performed regression analysis of the effects of age diversity on the board (given by standard deviation of ages) upon financial and market performance (given by ROA and Tobin‟s Q respectively). The analysis tested whether age diversity on the board improved firm performance, whether the effects were greater in small firms, and whether nonlinear “diminishing returns” appeared in situations with very high board diversity. As other studies have shown that board size, director tenure and gender diversity can all affect performance, we control for these factors as well as for mean director age, industry and firm size. After discovering that our metrics, ROA and Tobin‟s Q, do not correlate for small and medium size firms, but only for large firms with a market cap above EUR 1 billion, we argue that ROA is a better measurement of firm performance. We found that age diversity significantly affects firm performance as measured by ROA, but not as measured by Tobin‟s Q. We further found that the effects are only evident when the company belongs to the small-cap category with a market cap below EUR 150 million. The size of the effect differs depending on what measurement years are included in the analysis, and how long the time delay is between the measurement of age diversity and firm performance. We found that the effect of age diversity is slightly lower for ROA measured during the same year, compared to ROA measured two years later. Finally, our data did not support conclusions either way as to diminishing returns occuring in situations of extremely high age diversity, as too few such firms were found in the sample. In light of these findings, age diversity should be given equal weight to other considerations when composing a successful corporate board in small firms.

Förutsättningar för tillväxt i en gränsregion2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Perception and patient satisfaction: a case study of olabisi onabanjo university teaching hospital, Nigeria2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Patients view about health care service delivery is a neglected subject in many developing countries. Patients are viewed as passive beneficiary of health care service without a voice. However, the views and opinions of patient on perception of service quality and satisfaction of health care service can assist management and policy makers in the design, implementation and evaluation of services which in turn assist to better improve and deliver qualitative health care service to the populace. This study was aimed at assessing patient perception of service quality and satisfaction with health services received at Olabisi Onabanjo university teaching hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study was carried out at the outpatient clinics of the hospital during the study period. A total of 349 patients were interviewed using a pretested questionnaire to collect information on several dimensions of perceived quality and patient satisfaction. The data collected was analysed using SPSS statistical software. Factor analysis and multiple regressions were used to develop an 18-item scale having good reliability and validity identify. Four important dimensions of quality and satisfaction including doctor’s behavior and communication, supportive staff behavior, health infrastructure and waiting time were described. A total of 290 (83.1%) patients were satisfied with the overall service received at the hospital. The level of satisfaction was statistically significantly associated with female sex and employment status. Patient who were satisfied with the service significantly had a shorter waiting time than those not satisfied. Also patients who were satisfied with service had a longer consultation time compared with those not satisfied. In conclusion patient perception of quality and satisfaction are associated with the four important dimensions of quality. Long waiting time negatively affected satisfaction. If this is improved upon it will lead to increase patient satisfaction of health care service delivery

National Innovation Systems in two Nordic countries: Sweden and Finland. Lessons learned for the development of effective innovation policy in Armenia.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Today Armenia strives to build a knowledge-based economy to improve its competitiveness. For this reason, the creation and development of innovation-supporting infrastructure becomes a critical challenge for the next few years. In this regard, the experience of developed countries in the design and implementation of innovation policies can be useful for the creation of National Innovation System (NIS) in Armenia. This thesis work investigates the NIS model in the Nordic countries, specifically in Sweden and Finland, and make conclusion on how the Nordic model of NIS could work in Armenia. For this purpose, a comparative analysis of the NIS models in the Nordic countries, specifically in Sweden and Finland, with the NIS models in Israel and South Korea was conducted. To study the implementation of the Nordic model in transition economies, an example of one of Baltic countries - Estonia, was considered where currently this model of NIS is being implemented. Also, the current situation of NIS in Armenia was studied, and conclusions were made on what lessons can be learned for the development of effective innovation policy in Armenia. An attempt was made to answer the following research questions supporting the purpose of this thesis: 1. What are the specifics of the NIS model in two Nordic countries studied, i.e. in Sweden and Finland (the main features and peculiarities of NIS in Sweden and Finland has been identified through a comparative analysis of the NIS in these countries with the NIS models in two non-Nordic countries, i.e. in Israel and South Korea)? 2. To what extent has the Nordic model of NIS been implemented in Estonia and what are NIS development challenges there? 3. What are NIS development challenges in Armenia? 4. What lessons can be learned for the development of effective innovation policy in Armenia? The theoretical basis for this work originates in scientific articles by Lundvall, Freeman, Metcalfe and many others, research and reports of international organizations and national agencies, official documents and information posted on the websites of governmental organizations. Also, semi-structured interviews were conducted in seven private companies in Armenia to compile firm-level innovation data sets.

    Abstract [sv]

The relevance of Financial Statements and Its Impact in Organizational Performance – a case study of Atwima Mpomua Rural Bank.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to investigate the perception of investors in a rural bank as regards the uses of financial statements. Rural banks are the main source of financial service in rural sub-Saharan Africa and their services are mostly patronized by rural folks. Illiteracy rates in developing countries are very high as compared to developed countries and most of these people are living in rural areas. Sixty percent (60%) of Ghana’s population are rural dwellers and illiteracy levels are high in these areas. Financial information from relevant literature is used purposely for the comprehension of various financial positions of a company. Financial information from studies is most understood by expects with knowledge of account and finance. Investors who don’t have knowledge of account or finance rely on expects advice when making financial decisions. The study is therefore examining what extent of knowledge the rural dwellers who are mostly illiterates, and hence might not be able to understand financial statements, have of financial performance of the bank in which they are investing. The data was collected from a sample of one hundred and eighty respondents using questionnaires and face to face interviews conducted with management staff of the bank and used for analysis. Analyses were presented in a statistical format using mean score, vein diagrams and ratio calculation. Majority of investors in the bank were found to have tertiary level education making them literate, and they could understand and interpret financial statements. They preferred to have more access to financial statements and perceived service delivery a priority. Managers of the bank use profitability and liquidity ratios calculated from the various financial statements of the bank to determine their performance. The research was conducted on just one of the many rural banks in Ghana and as such could lead to results which might be not representative of what patens in rest of the many rural banks scattered across the country. The present study adds to the existing literature by examine the issue of user perception of financial statements in sub-Saharan Africa i.e. a developing economy and the issue of illiterates knowledge of financial performance. This seeks to determine their understanding of the bank’s performance measures.

Hur arbetar mikroföretag med ekonomistyrning?2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Entrepreneurial Risk taking propensity and Performance: A case study of Owner-Managed companies in the Ghana Club 100.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Abstract Title: Entrepreneurial Risk taking propensity and Performance: A case study of Owner-Managed companies in the Ghana Club 100. Author: Desmond Dellor Supervisor: Anders Hederstierna Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s thesis in Business administration, 15 credits (ECTS). Background and Problem Discussion: This study seeks to assess how successful are Owner- Managed Companies in the “Ghana Club100”. The broad question addressed by this study is whether Owners manage their businesses better or not and also to examine whether Owner Managers in aggregate exhibit decision biases in their investment decision making processes taking into account the risk bearing role of entrepreneurs. Purpose: This research sought to investigate the risk aversion of Ghanaian entrepreneurs, whether or not they are biased in their investment decision making and to assess the performance of Owner- managed companies against their counterparts employed to manage for shareholders. Method: The study employed both conceptual and empirical approach. That is theories and principles pertaining to the study were examined and steps were taken to establish factual evidence base on figures sought from respondents by the use of questionnaire. Primary and secondary data were used extensively for the study. Theory: There was an extensive review of existing literature on the subject matter with careful consideration for concepts which clearly bring alive the understanding of entrepreneurship, risk taking propensity, performance and good corporate governance and makes linkages with empirical data. Analysis: Both quantitative and qualitative measurements were employed in analyzing the data collected for the study. The quantitative analysis involved the use of descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis focused mostly on information derived from the interviews and questionnaire administered. The outcomes were used to test the hypotheses. Conclusion: I found that Ghanaian Entrepreneurs have two types of risk: demand uncertainty and ability uncertainty. They display a significant amount of risk aversion to demand uncertainty but are very confident about their capabilities, in other words, they are “risk seeking” in respect of their ability uncertainty. Accordingly, whilst they are risk-averse in the classic sense of preferring a “certain return” to an uncertain investment with commensurate expected value, their over-confidence predisposes them to bear economic risk under a given set of conditions. Key Words: Risk taking propensity, Overconfidence, Investment, Performance

Effects of the Post Multi-Fiber Agreement on Bangladesh Readymade Garments Sector2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The thesis “Effects of the Post Multi-fiber Agreement on Bangladesh Ready Made Garments Sector” is a part of our M.Sc. in Business Administration Program. The thesis paper on this topic is done under the supervision of Mr. Göran Alsén, Professor of Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) Ronneby, Sweden. In our country garment industry has been playing most vital role in our national economy, foreign exchange earnings, employment, growth in other sector and most prominently women employment. In the first chapter we tried to focus on the historical background of Multi Fiber Agreement, the growth of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturer and Exporter Association (BGMEA).In 1983 the total members of BGMEA were 143 with narrow export volume but in 2007 we see the total members are 4637.They contribute 75.64% of our total export (BGMEA, 2007). People who are directly involved with this sector became worried because of phase out of quota system from January 2005.But if we observe the current scenario it is very much positive for our national economy. It’s true that competition grew high but at the same time we can say that our garments industry did not lose its market reputation compared to that of other rival competitors like China, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam etc. It’s very obvious that we have great problem with the backward linkage industry. As a result we are facing huge competition among the competitors. We have to face huge competition with the other competitors as long as we could set up our backward linkage industry. Under these circumstances, our Government is taking necessary steps to remove this problem. It is now simply a matter of time. But we hope we will get rid of this problem very soon. In this thesis paper we have tried to analyze the performance of five different RMG companies and we have also tried to examine the impact of withdrawal of quota system. Based on these five RMG factories we observe that our RMG industry is performing well after Post MFA. In addition, if we look our total exports we see that approximately 74.93% of our total export is from RMG sector. It is very promising sector compared to other export items. Thus we can say that to survive in this competitive sector our RMG sector should take some more necessary steps like improving employee efficiency, ensuring more training facility, emphasizing on backward linkage industry etc. To attract foreign investors these are very important.

Corporate social responsibility and stakeholder management in Unilever Ghana ltd2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and stakeholder management is relatively new to the Ghanaian business sector. Unilever Ghana ltd. has consistently had a prominent CSR drive in Ghana for several years. It has been found that stakeholder involvement in CSR is important for implementing relevant CSR programs which creates goodwill, good reputation and enhances business value. It is on this basis that this case study of Unilever Ghana was conducted. It investigates the CSR process of the company, the involvement and management of stakeholders in that regard and the relationship with corporate (financial) performance. Using the stakeholder approach as theoretical frame, interviews with open-ended questioning style as well as documents are used as sources of evidence. Analysis of the data is done with the help of building empirical models which will serve as guidelines for management practitioners dealing with stakeholder relations and CSR in modern Ghana.

Current working conditions of public servants in Greece under the impact of the financial crisis2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is focused on examining, with the usage of the Job Demands – Resources model, the levels of burnout and work engagement that the public servants experience, after the effects of the unforeseen financial crisis that stroke Greece by the end of 2009. The target is to try to investigate how the current working conditions of public servants shape up after the layoffs and wage cuts that occurred, reaching respectively by average 20% and 40% decreases. Further than that using the Job Demands and Resources (JD-R) model and the statistical analysis of the obtained data we will try to suggest methods of counter-measuring the crisis-imposed negative situation in accordance to theoretical models. In order to obtain measureable data, an online survey was created with a series of questions and statements the responses of which can help in identifying important statistical measures on the working conditions of civil servants. Two organizations were targeted to participate in our survey: The Elderly Open Care Center (EOCC) KAPI Kalamarias in Thessaloniki and the Local authorities Municipality of Grevena (O.T.A. Grevena). Using two distant local authorities it is purposed to achieve a greater statistical sample variety, compare and cross validate the data results. The online survey was answered by a total 37 of employees in Thessaloniki and 29 employees in Grevena. The statistical analysis that was made on the results revealed that the public servants are currently experiencing lack of motivation due to the crisis-imposed increased workload and work resources restriction to low levels. The statistical analysis proved two hypothesis that we made: a) there is correlation between the crisis-imposed high job demands and burnout and b) the crisis-imposed decreased job resources demotivate employees and disallows them from achieving work engagement and reducing the negative effects of burnout.

We also investigate the case of Pakistan that how CSR can play a role in branding Pakistan by the help of corporate sector in close collaboration with government. Methods: On the basis of our research area we used qualitative approach. The secondary data have been collected through literature review of research papers, magazines, websites and books. The primary data have been collected by conducting interviews and Sweden as case. Result/output: As a result of our research we will present a model of relationship between CSR and country branding in general. Then we also present a customize model for Pakistan. Conclusion and Recommendations: We have interpreted and analyzed the collected data together with the theories and thereafter drawn the conclusion that CSR is successfully adopted by many countries but nor considered as part of country branding. As it is having vital role creating soft image of a country by having positive impact on society and environment, so it must be a part of country’s branding program. To achieve this target, close collaboration of government and corporate sector is necessary. Pakistan’s corporate sector also needs to have collaboration with government to effectively implement the CSR program in the country.

Organizational Networks as Catalysts for Strategic Sustainable Development2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

In an increasingly connected and interdependent world, the global sustainability challenge needs to be addressed by organizational networks from a whole-systems perspective. This study explores organizations through the lens of network theory and the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, with a special focus on networks already considering sustainability issues. The purpose of the research was to identify key factors critical to the success of an organizational network in the sustainability field, as well as define specific barriers to success for these networks. These specific factors and barriers to success are identified and explored across: Academic, Business, and Non-Profit sectors, with the ultimate objective of increasing the performance of Emerging Sustainability Networks (ESNs), removing barriers in the field, and planning strategically to achieve success in the sustainability movement.

Style-based Team-Building of Virtual Organizations: The ISES case of R&D cooperation in the Utility Industry1997Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Virtual organizations are gaining more and more popularity, including the utility industry. Utilities and other related firms combine their competencies and other resources in order to gain better market positions as deregulation sweeps through Europe. However, the realization of the strategic potential of virtual organizations faces several obstacles. One of these difficulties is the fact that participants in the virtual organization have different ways of processing information which can impede their communication. Empirical research is here reported on how the participants' Decision Styles and their effect on interaction patterns in the utility related R&D virtual organization called ISES, primarily located in Sweden. The results include explanations of communication patterns (e.g., input volume, modes, richness and reciprocity), morale, and subproject integration. Furthermore, it was found that different Decision Styles were more or less stimulating team-building, creativeness and cooperation in a virtual organization. Especially the Integrative style was found to promote synergistic interaction among the participants: This suggests the usefulness of a Decision Style approach for team-building more effective virtual organizations through mutual awareness, understanding, and utilization of style differences as well as similarities among the participants.

Investment and Development Impact of Microfinance Institutions: A case study of Ghana2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study with its two-fold objectives undertakes a descriptive analysis of how Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) have evolved into its multi-tiered state in Ghana and how their development has impacted other stakeholders in Ghana’s economy especially Micro and Small-Scale Enterprises (MSEs). Additionally, this study undertakes an empirical and exploratory case study to investigate how MFIs in Ghana are influencing access to finance by MSEs. Given that MFIs and MSEs impact large swaths of very poor households, contribute fairly to the GDP of their countries, possess the potential to lift poor household above the poverty line, absorb the ramifications of economic recessions and fiscal adjustments, and provide employment and welfare; they constitute a potent investment and developmental tool for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and national development programmes in developing countries. The study shows how Ghana’s MFI sector has evolved through years of regulatory reform into a multi-tiered microfinance framework to fill the financial chasm and disparity. It is also shown that the main financial and banking institutions are extending their depth of coverage to poor households through partnership with MFIs. Semi-structured questionnaires were administered to a random sample of 25 MFIs and 25 MSEs. The questionnaires qualitatively measured and assessed among others the firm characteristics, access and use of capital, the use of savings accounts, the impact of business loans, loan policy and procedures, marketing strategy, customer evaluations, business motivation, business challenges and loan repayment. Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) serve only about 5% of Ghanaian households. 70% of households are reported to have members without a savings account. The main source of household credit and loans is relatives, friends and neighbours. Findings from the study indicate the main source of start-up capital for both MFIs and MSEs are personal savings, followed by the use of business loans. MFIs are the main source of business loans for MSEs. MSEs are confronted with lengthy loan processing and approvals times of up to 3 months and are required to provide collateral for loans. The main types of loan collaterals are physical assets and savings with the MFI. The latter being a contributory factor to the lengthy loan processing and approval time. MFIs offer MSEs very flexible payment terms and are easily accessible to MSEs, which are the key decision factors for MSEs in deciding an institution for loan application. MSEs hold favourable views of MFIs and the kind of financial services MFIs offer them. MSEs used business loans mostly in business growth and expansion. MSEs indicated business loans from MFIs had overall positive impact on their revenues, profits and their overall business activities. MSEs highlighted access to loans as their main business challenge. Loans offered by MFIs are tailored to meet their specific needs – fixed interest rates, short maturity (3-6months) and flexible payment terms. The main business challenges for MFIs are customer loan defaults and competition. The study has shown that MFIs are increasing their momentum to harness the investment and developmental opportunities that limited or lack of access to financial services and products presents, which this study has shown to be the driving force behind the growth and expansion of MSEs and with a culminated impact on Ghana’s economy.

    Abstract [sv]

When Product Managers Gamble with Requirements: Attitudes to Value and Risk2009Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Context and motivation: Finding a balance between commercial (customer specific, market pull and external quality requirements) and internal quality requirements is a recognized challenge in market driven software product development (MDSPD). In order to address this challenge it is important to understand the preferences and biases influencing decision makers selecting requirements for software releases. Question/problem: Prospect theory has been successfully applied to many disciplines. Applying it to MDSPD suggests decision makers will avoid risk when selecting between commercial requirements, take risk with internal quality requirements, and prefer commercial requirements over internal quality requirements in order to maximize their perceived value. This paper seeks to investigate this claim. Principal ideas/results: This paper presents an experiment investigating whether the biases proposed by prospect theory can be seen operating in MDSPD requirements engineering (RE). The results indicate risk avoidance when dealing commercial requirements, while greater risk is taken when dealing with internal quality requirements. Contribution: As this is the first paper to use prospect theory to explain requirements selection decisions, it presents opportunity to educate people in the biases they bring to the RE process, and facilitate the creation of strategies for balancing the different requirements types.

Creative City Assessment of Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the current status of the capitals of the Baltic States according to the Creative Class Theory. With increasing role of knowledge, creativity and innovation in the today’s economy, the role of the Creative Capital increases. Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius are the capitals of the Baltic States, experiencing dynamic growth. Therefore, such a study would add to the assessment of the current status and identification of the possible improvements. The Creative Class Theory suggests that knowledge or creativity of people is the main driving force of the economic growth. Thus, for the economic development, a place needs combination of three factors, 3Ts – Talent, Technology, and Tolerance. Each of them is necessary, but not sufficient factor. In order to examine Talent, the authors use three measures of the Creative Class, the Human Capital, and the Scientific Talent. The findings indicate that all three cities have competitive level of the Creative Class in comparison with the other EU countries; however, low level of the Scientific Talent. The authors conclude that the Scientific Talent is an important part of the Creative Class; thus, the cities must find the means to develop it. By comparing the three capitals, Vilnius is the most competitive in terms of the Talent indicator; Tallinn has the second position, and Riga is the least competitive among the capitals of the Baltic States. The second component, Technology, is measured by the Innovation Activity Index and E-commerce Index. These measures indicate that the three cities are rather uncompetitive in comparison with the leading EU countries. Among the capitals of the Baltic States, Tallinn is the most developed according to Technology; Vilnius is the second, and Riga is lagging behind in the Technology measures. To summarize, all three cities need to put an important emphasis on developing Technology. Lastly, Tolerance is measured by using three different indicators of the values and attitudes. According to these measures, Tallinn is the most tolerant city among the three capitals, but the level of Tolerance is rather similar in Riga and Vilnius. From the study of literature, the authors find that the level of Tolerance is related with the economic development; thus, an increase in the income level in the three cities might increase the level of the tolerance. The authors conclude that despite the fact that the Creative Class Theory suggests the need to build people’s climate for the economic development, the three capitals of the Baltic States still need to build the business climate in order to increase the level of Technology, as it is currently the missing component of the 3Ts.

Corporate Governance Practice among Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana; Impact on Access to Credit2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background, Purpose and Problem Discussion This study, Corporate Governance Practice among SMEs in Ghana; impact on access to credit, was undertaken to bring to the fore the level of corporate governance practice among Ghanaian SMEs and what impact it has had on them accessing credit. In spite of all the argument about the advantages of corporate governance and the potential economic development that it could bring to a developing country like Ghana, its practice among the SMEs is very low though that sector forms the majority of the country’s firm tissue. In tackling this topic, both the quantitative and qualitative approach was adopted. Questionnaires were circulated to 120 SMEs in the Accra, Tema and Kumasi .metropolis through the convenience sampling. 100 responses were received and based on the responses received through these questionnaires, the following major findings came to the fore. While most SME stakeholders had heard about Corporate Governance, actual knowledge and adherence to modern day corporate governance guideline is very low. Most SMEs still maintain the CEO/Board chairman duality. . Majority of the SMEs studied did not have board committees, while some did not even know what board committees were. On the average SMEs in this study had a 4 member board; but only a small percentage had regular meetings i.e. quarterly. Most met semi-annually and annually. Very few of the SMEs in this study had directors who were external to them. Secondly, the study also revealed that commercial banks remains the most reliable source of funds for the SMEs, these banks do not make adherence to modern day corporate governance principles a reason for granting credit. The SMEs credit history, pledged security and cash flow were considered more important. Conclusion Corporate Governance practice among SMEs in Ghana is very low. This phenomenon have not had any significant impact on the SMEs access to credit. .Thus even the promise of improved access to finance, business and economic growth have not proven strong enough to make SMEs pursue strict adherence to corporate governance principles. It is recommended that government, the banks, NGOs and all other stakeholders in the SME sector pay more attention to activities that increases corporate governance awareness among SMEs in Ghana.

Strategic leadership in turbulent markets2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

High-tech gadgets is a technology-intensive market that is highly profitable and very dynamic. Competition in this market is very intense and the market winner is unpredictable. In order to remain a market leader or to become one, a company should build a competitive advantage over his market rivals. In this study the authors would like to understand what market strategy make companies successful and what are the constituents of this strategy. To answer these questions a literature study was conducted with the goal to find market strategies that are representative for the dynamic market conditions. As a result several hypotheses for the market strategy and market leadership were derived. The multiple-case study method was used in order to ensure that by comparing single cases the optimal strategy is chosen. Three companies were chosen from the mobile phone market as representative examples due to recent changes in market leading position that involved them all: Apple succeeded mobile phone market leader Nokia in the smart-phone design, and Samsung succeeded Apple in the smart-phone design and Nokia in total mobile-phone market. Data collection was gained from the corporate sources of investigated companies, known financial institutions, and open source and published scientific journals. Subsequently, the hypotheses were verified by verification of internal and external validities, and the final market strategies with their constituents were derived. A major finding of the study is in showing empirically that both strategies [market-driven and driving-markets] can be successful, but they are company profile dependent [in this study: design-based and manufacturing-based]. Market leadership is independent of the market strategy and is highly dependent on the core competencies that are nourished by top-management. Therefore, as core competences are not specifically defined in this study, the managers should seek a way on how to induce the organization change for stimulating the creativity and innovativeness in the company - building an innovative culture. Market strategies proposed in this study can then be used as guidelines, but not as the prescription.

THE OUTSOURCING OF LOGISTICAL ACTIVITIES: THE CASE OF GUINNESS GHANA BREWERIES LIMITED2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT The study has revealed that Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited has been outsourcing it logistics activities more than four years. The rationale behind the outsourcing activities is to cut down cost and enjoy first class service from specialist using the most suitable, quick and reliable technology. The company has actually increased its revenue margin consistently for the past four years and has enjoyed other benefits like: timely delivery and overall quality improvement. Its logistics service providers have also enjoyed benefits like: consistent profit growth rate, transformation of superiority into competitive pricing through economics of scale, improvements of staff skills through efficient training and continuous exposure to new technologies and best practices in the industry. The main problem encountered by the logistics service providers is that they are not been paid on time. It also came to light that Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited have build a very good business relationship with its service providers which have enable it to maintain good logistics service providers and switch to a new one if the need arise. It was discovered that outsourcing logistics activities which is a contractual service has become relatively stable in the developed countries while it is a rapidly growing and emerging in developing countries like Ghana. It was noted that the most obvious reason behind outsourcing logistics activities is to provide very effective means of reducing costs, better services, improving operating efficiency, flexibility and getting access to new suitable technologies easily at a lower cost. Outsourcing, therefore, has increasingly becomes an important strategy that can significantly assist organizations to leverage their skills and resources to achieve greater competitiveness. However, there are risks of becoming over dependent on service providers.

Unlocking Potentials of Innovation Systems in Low Resource Settings2013Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study examined the dynamics, challenges and opportunities of developing innovation systems in low resource settings with a particular focus on Uganda. It applied perspectives of technoscience and concepts of innovation systems, triple helix as university-industry-government relationships, mode 2 knowledge production and situated knowledges in understanding the context, identifying key policy issues and suggesting ways to address them. A mixed methodology combining both quantitative and qualitative methods was used in the study. It involved review of key policy documents, key informant interviews, focus group discussions and meetings with scientists, business leaders in the target organizations and firms, community members as well as observations of production processes in firms. Findings underscore the need for greater interaction and learning among actors in the emerging innovation systems in Uganda and eastern Africa. An opportunity for this to happen may be the growing number of entrepreneurial initiatives at the university and some public research organizations in the country. These entrepreneurial initiatives are driven by scientists, who are enthusiastic about moving their research results and innovations to market. This makes it plausible, in low resource settings like in Uganda, to promote the university working closely with public research organizations and firms as a locus for research and innovation. However, enabling conditions, which foster interaction and learning among actors, should be put in place. First, there is need to formulate specific policies and strategies with clear goals and incentives to promote growth of particular innovation systems. Second, a clear national policy for financing research and innovation is needed, which involves on the one part core funding to universities and research organizations, and on the other, competitive grants for research and innovation. Third, business incubation services should be established and/or supported as places where entrepreneurial scientists and other persons develop and test their business ideas and models. Fourth, there is need for institutional reforms to make administrative processes less bureaucratic, more costeffective and efficient. These reforms are necessary for example in processes involving procurement and financial management, research project approvals (for ethics and safety), technology assessments, contracting and licensing and other registration services. The findings and conclusions from this study demonstrate that technoscientific perspectives and innovation systems approaches can be adapted and used as a framework for identifying and explaining conditions that promote or hamper innovation in low resource settings as well as policy options to address them.

Försvarsmaktens organisation 2013: En studie av kommunikationens betydelse under en organisationsförändring2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
