Människans interaktion med miljön2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Enligt bl.a.

Factors Influencing Tourism Destinations Attractiveness: The Case of Malaga2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Destination attractiveness is a subjective concept that has raised discussions among academics and researchers within the field of tourism. Attractiveness has been studied from different approaches, and due to the importance of tourism in contemporary societies, it has also been studied within different disciplines of knowledge, without achieving an agreement on its definition, measure and creation. This thesis is an attempt to contribute to these discussions through the analysis of the case of Malaga, Spain, a city with a long and strong relation to tourism, but which for particular reasons and context, had to develop its tourism sector almost from the scratch over the course of recent decades, before becoming one of the most important urban cultural destinations in Spain.

This thesis will explore the factors that influenced the creation of Malaga’s attractiveness and the strategies that supported this evolution.

Embedding socio-ecological sustainability into impact investor due diligence.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Impact investors, seeking financial returns from investments that actively create social or environmental value, use a process known as due diligence to vet incoming investment opportunities. Some industry-wide tools have come to aid investors in this task. Existing metrics are not sufficient to assess the environmental performance of investee companies, the result of which is an allocation of increasing investment dollars into ventures and industries that are not operating within the limits of the socio-ecological systems upon which society depends. This paper proposes the creation of an investor toolkit that would allow users to effectively integrate the principles of strategic sustainable development (SSD) into the due diligence process. Such a toolkit would explain how current due diligence support tools could be used to construct comprehensive sustainability analyses of potential investments. The proposed toolkit was conceived after interviews with impact investors, social entrepreneurs, and industry experts. The research findings confirm a need for investors to use a strategic understanding of sustainability during the due diligence process, in order to increase portfolio value over time.

Android: Resource Consumption in Native and Web Applications2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is an ongoing debate by people in the industry whether to make native or web applications. These discussions mostly surround issues about development costs, user experience and capabilities. Another aspect of this debate is the fact that mobile devices have varying hardware specifications which is another factor to consider when making this decision. What we want to shed some light on is how performance is affected on the device when using these two different approaches of application development. The use of CPU/RAM and Energy is our primary concern and in our experiment we measure these values on two similar applications where one uses Nested Layouts and the other a WebView. The experiment was made on three different devices with varying specifications. What we found was that Web applications have a bigger impact on overall performance and because of this use more battery. While the debate certainly won't come to a close with results they are conclusive when it comes to the topic of performance and will be of value to developers who are concerned about it.

Video Games and Software Engineers: Designing a study based on the benefits from Video Games and how they can improve Software Engineers2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: This is a study about investigating if playing video games can improve any skills and characteristics in a software engineer. Due to lack of resources and time, this study will focus on designing a study that others may use to measure the results and if video games actually can improve software engineers.

Objectives: The main objectives are finding the benefits of playing video games and how those benefits are discovered. Meaning what types of games and for how long someone needs to play in order to be affected and show improvements. Another objective is to find out what skills are requested and required in a software engineer. Then it is time to design the study based on the information gathered.

Methods: There is a lot of literature studying involved. The method is parallel research which is when reading about the benefits of playing video games, then also reading and trying to find corresponding benefits in what is requested and required in software engineers.

Results: There are many cognitive benefits from video games that are also beneficial in software engineers. There is no recorded limit to how long a study can go on playing video games that it proves to have negative consequences. That means that the study designed from the information gathered is very customizable and there are many results that can be measured.

Conclusions: There is a very high chance that playing video games can result in better software engineers because the benefits that games provide are connected to skills requested and required by employers and other expert software engineers that have been in the business for a long time and have a high responsibilities over other teams of software engineers.

Study of the Mechanical Retractable Landing-Gear2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis was conducted in the design office of “Blackwing SwedenAB”, a Swedish aircraft manufacturer. The mission is to study air loadson a mechanical retractable landing gear. This study is realised to verifyif the structure is resistant enough for a landing and find the retractionspeed of the system. To accomplish those goals, the thesis was realisedon site with a state of-the-art, research on technical solutions, handcalculations, ANSYS analysis and tests with validation by a companyexpert. Testing is part of the certification and results show the structureis strong enough to resist air loads but present also an unexpected result. All this work assures the stability of the structure for a safe landing butalso a need to redesign the leg for a stronger support at impact.

Cultivating the Social Field: Strategically moving Urban Agricultural Projects towards Sustainability2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The urban landscape requires a shift to a more self-sufficient, healthy and sustainable future. Urban agricultural (UA) projects are one way to do so. This research explores how low-income UA projects in North America and Europe can be supported strategically in moving towards a sustainable future. The authors analysed UA projects using the 5 Level Framework (5LF) and the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) to understand their current reality and to help determine sustainable advances within UA projects. Leverage Points were also used as a subsidiary analytical tool to help pinpoint effective actions of change. Research resulted in the creation of Strategic Recommendations and guidance for UA projects to help foster a societal shift towards sustainability.

Humor i omvårdnaden: En litteraturstudie2012Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Purposeful Action: organizational practices that contribute to a culture of strategic decision making for sustainability2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Current methods for reaching and defining success in society are not sustainable. A major shift in society’s definition of economic success is required, and organizations represent a key leverage point in the transition to a sustainable economy. This research looks to practices within organizations with a sustainability purpose in an attempt to understand how their organizational culture creates an environment for continual strategic decision making towards sustainability. A combination of literature review and structured interviews were used to elicit the cultural practices of 18 organizations with a clear social and ecological sustainability purpose. The research confirmed the importance of organizational culture for maintaining alignment with a sustainability purpose by fostering motivation and commitment towards sustainability at both a collective and individual level in the organization. Eight overarching areas of practice were identified as being present in the organizations included in the study. The practices identified help organizations to act strategically and in the right direction towards sustainability on a daily basis, standing as a complement to the strategic prioritization model of the FSSD.

Design of Modified UCHT Sequences2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we consider the design of a class of unified complex Hadamard transform (UCHT) sequences. An effi- cient modification is imposed to those sequences to better suit applications in asynchronous code-division multiple- access (CDMA) systems. These modified UCHT sequences preserve the orthogonality of the original UCHT sequences and offer increased design options due to an increased number of parameters. The design of UCHT, modified UCHT, and Oppermann sequences is then formulated with reference to optimizing the maximum nontrivial aperiodic correlation value. These optimization problems can then be solved efficiently using a genetic algorithm with the maximum nontrivial aperiodic correlation value serving in the definition of a fitness function. Numerical examples illustrate the benefits of modified UCHT sequences over the original UCHT sequences.

Design of Sequence Family Subsets Using a Branch and Bound Technique2009In: IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, ISSN 0018-9448, E-ISSN 1557-9654, Vol. 55, no 8, p. 3847-3857Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The number of spreading sequences required for Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) systems depends on the number of simultaneous users in the system. Often a sequence family provides more sequences than are required; in many cases the selection of the employed sequences is a computationally intensive task. This selection is a key consideration, as the properties of the sequences assigned affect the error performance in the system. In this paper, a branch and bound algorithm is presented to perform this selection based on two different cost functions. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the improved performance of this algorithm over previous work.

Subset Family Design Using a Branch and Bound Technique2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The number of spreading sequences required for Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) systems depends on the number of simultaneous users on the channel. The correlation properties of the sequences used affect the bit error rate of the system. Often a sequence family provides more sequences than are required and in many cases the selection of the employed sequences is a computationally intensive task. In this paper, a branch and bound algorithm is presented to optimise the subset of available sequences given the required subset size. In contrast to previous approaches, the resulting subset is guaranteed to be optimal. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the improved performance of this algorithm over previous work.

Bit Error Rates of Large Area Synchronous Systems2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Large Area Synchronous (LAS) sequences are a class of ternary interference free window spreading sequences. One of their advantages is the ability to construct permutation LAS families in order to reduce adjacent cell interference (ACI) in cellular systems. There has been little previous numerical work to examine the effect of using permutation families compared to simply reusing the same LAS family across different cells. The bit error rates resulting from two cell systems employing both permutation families and sequence reuse are considered here by simulation.

Combination Oppermann Sequences for Spread Spectrum Systems2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Numerous spread spectrum applications require families of long spreading sequences, often used at very high chip rates. In this paper, an algebraically simple way of generating long sequences by combining shorter polyphase sequences is presented, aimed at asynchronous spread spectrum systems. The approach is motivated by the fact that polyphase sequences offer increased design options, in terms of the supported range of correlation characteristics, while combination sequences allow for simpler generation of long sequences. It leads to the definition of combination Oppermann sequences, the properties of which are investigated in this paper. Numerical results indicate that the families of these proposed combination sequences provide favourable aperiodic correlations. The presented family of combination Oppermann sequences is therefore suitable for applications that rely on rapid synchronisation and are required to provide multiple access to the system.

On the Classification of Large Area Sequences2007Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Large Area (LA) sequences form a class of ternary spreading sequences which exhibit an interference free window. In addition, these sequences have low correlation properties outside this window. Work to date has concentrated on examining the parameters and performance of LA sequences with reference to only a small number of example families. In this paper we develop general conditions which an LA family must satisfy. The development of these conditions allows for the production of computationally efficient tests to determine whether a given family is an LA family. In particular, these tests can form the basis for algorithms to construct LA families, allowing for a larger number of families with the potential for higher energy efficiency than those of previous work.

Periodic Oppermann Sequences for Spread Spectrum Systems2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we introduce periodic Oppermann sequences, which constitute a special class of polyphase sequences. The properties of these sequences are presented, and indicate that periodic Oppermann sequences are suitable for combination to generate families of longer sequences. Numerical examples show that periodic Oppermann sequences can be designed for ranging or synchronisation applications or for supporting multiple access spread spectrum communication systems.

Integrating Participatory Processes in Planning for Strategic Sustainable Development2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how dialogue-based methodologies can be integrated into a participatory planning process for strategic sustainable development. Evidence of the complex nature of the sustainability challenge is cited as necessitating tools and methodologies suited for dealing with complexity. The methodologies in this study were designed to use dialogue to address complex problems in which outcomes are unpredictable. Within the sustainability practitioner community, we identified a need for research on systematic guidance for pairing engagement processes with use of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). This research focuses on how a specific set of dialogue-based methodologies within the Art of Hosting network can be integrated with the FSSD to strengthen the linkage between content and process. As the culmination of our research, we have developed The Weave: Participatory Process Design Guide for Strategic Sustainable Development (www.theweave.info). It includes a Template for process design, suggestions and examples for use, and guiding principles. It is the first prototype of participatory process design guidance to be offered for pilot testing in the field of strategic sustainable development.

Retention of IT Consultants: How to Grow Employee Loyalty – the case of T-company2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Most IT / Telecommunication consulting companies suffer high employee turnover. Engaged and satisfied employees are more likely to stay with their companies. Identifying motivation and satisfaction factors for IT consultants is therefore of great importance in increasing employee retention. The purpose of this research is to investigate what are the most important motivation and satisfaction factors for IT consultants, what causes consultants to stay and what are the main reasons for leaving their companies. Understanding IT consultants' motivation and needs could help IT consulting companies to lower turnover, and retain good employees by satisfying their needs as much as is reasonable.

    Abstract [sv]

What are the affordances fostered by social media for amateurs artists?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research engages the use of social media sites for musicians with a focus on Facebook. It determines which are the advantages the platform makes available for musicians, allowing them to employ Do It Yourself strategies of production, audience relationship management and self-management. The importance of audience response and demographics allow any musician integrate keen insight into the content delivery and thus, optimize their management accordingly. This thesis will establish the affordances that engage what aspects and uses of Facebook are changing the way amateurs operate. The research appropriates the context of professionalism to the variable of knowledgeability, know-how, and Stebbins’ (1977) seven variables (confidence, perseverance, continuation commitment, preparedness and self-conception) in order to note a definition of the modern amateur in contrast to professionals.

Design and Decision Making: Backcasting using principles to implement cradle-to-cradle2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Human society is currently designed based on linear patterns, without concern for and interactions with the biosphere. The natural world works in cycles, and in order to interact with these systems in a sustainable way, the redesign of human society according to the paradigm of cyclical thinking is required. This paper explores the synthesis and synergies between the cradle-to-cradle concept and a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development in the context of sustainable development. The research tests whether Backcasting using Sustainability Principles is supportive to the implementation of the cradle-to-cradle concept and draws on relevant literature as well as interviews with experts. Based upon this research a process tool is designed and tested within a case study. Results indicate that, when backcasting using sustainability principles, principles for design and principles for decision-making provide synergistic characteristics in the process of implementation. Inspiring design principles, such as the ones suggested by the cradle-to-cradle concept, provide powerful engagement for a social learning process that works towards sustainable development. A structured decision-making process based on backcasting using sustainability principles provides the constraints and criteria for robust decision-making along the journey.

Query Expansion Research and Application in Search Engine Based on Concepts Lattice2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Formal concept analysis is increasingly applied to query expansion and data mining problems. In this paper I analyze and compare the current concept lattice construction algorithm, and choose iPred and Border algorithms to adapt for query expansion. After I adapt two concept lattice construction algorithms, I apply these four algorithms on one query expansion prototype system. The calculation time for four algorithms are recorded and analyzed. The result of adapted algorithms is good. Moreover I find the efficiency of concept lattice construction is not consistent with complex analysis result. In stead, it is high depend on the structure of data set, which is data source of concept lattice.

Esoko and WhatsApp Communication in Ghana: Mobile Services such as Esoko and WhatsApp in Reshaping Interpersonal Digital Media Communication in Ghana2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The predominant use of mobile media such as SMS and MIM across various sectors in Ghana is incontrovertibly influencing and reshaping interpersonal communications. This paper looked at the use of the Esoko SMS and WhatsApp MIM platforms and how the use of these two dominant platforms are enhancing and reshaping digital communication in the rural and urban Ghana respectively, as barriers of socioeconomic factors limits the use of sophisticated technologies in the rural setting. This is done by employing Madianou and Miller's notion of polymedia” to draw on the moral, social and the emotional use of mobile media in enacting interpersonal relationships and communications whilst keeping in focus the recursive repercussions.

Shaping and Authorising a Public Health Profession.2014In: The South Eastern European Journal of Public Health, ISSN 2197-5248, Vol. 31 MayArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this short communication is to stimulate a discussion on the state of a public health profession in Europe and actions which need to be taken to authorise public health professionals based on their competencies. While regulated professions such as medical doctors, nurses, lawyers, and architects can enjoy the benefits of the 2005/ 36/EC Directive amended by 2013/55/EU Directive on the recognition of professional qualifications, public health professionals are left out from these elite. Firstly, we use the profession traits theory as a framework in arguing whether public health can be a legitimate profession in itself, second, we explain who public health professionals are and what usually is required for shaping the public health profession, and thirdly, we attempt to sketch the road to the authorisation or licencing of public health professionals. Finally, we will propose some recommendation.

Regional disparities in Hungary2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the past decades, exacerbating regional disparities in the European Union as well as the newly joined Eastern European states have led to a growing interest in examining the spatial embeddedness of development. Hungary, a small and very monocentric country, has experienced rapid growth in the region of its capital city and its surrounding, whereas formerly lagging regions continued to fall behind. This thesis examines growing regional disparities in Hungary in order to provide a more comprehensive overview of the phenomenon and synthesise a growing body of both Hungarian and international literature based on their relevance for Hungary.

As regional disparities rarely form an explicit research subject, the first aim of this thesis was to establish a suitable method for a comprehensive national level analysis. Within a mixed methodological framework, three theoretical perspectives on regional development were selected to analyse and reveal structural disparities, which were set in contrast with GDP levels of regions. On the one hand, the method proved to be useful to establish a refined rank order of the regions based on their approximated level and speed of development. On the other hand, the three different perspectives revealed structural strength and weaknesses underlying general development level of regions. The results did confirm the multiple advantages of the most developed regions, as well as the complex disadvantage of the most backward regions. Based on this experience a further increase in disparity levels can be expected in Hungary. Regions between the two extremes showed more heterogeneous outcomes across the perspectives, revealing very different development path and structural problems behind the performance level of these regions. Taken together, these findings support the heightening need of decentralization in Hungary, in order to tackle growing regional disparities and establish policy responses at a regional level.

Strategically Sustainable Environmental Assessment2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Large-scale planning initiatives can present major long-term environmental and social consequences. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is one type of approach to integrating environmental considerations into many large-scale plans and programs, and was established in the European Union by Council Directive 2001/42/EC. Practical and theoretical limitations remain, and this research considers “How can SEA be carried out for plans and programs to better support strategic decision-making toward sustainability?” Information is compiled from an extensive literature review, interviews with SEA experts, and a case study SEA. An analysis is conducted around a framework for strategic sustainable development, based on backcasting from sustainability principles. Results indicate that SEA plays an important role in mitigating environmental impacts of planning, but also faces many weaknesses relative to a truly strategic approach to sustainable development. To help fill these gaps, generic recommendations are developed for SEA practice. Built on a principle-based definition of sustainability, they are relevant to any individual SEA situation. Hypothetical applications of the recommendations are illustrated with a case study. By adopting these recommendations, SEA practitioners can enable planners to better integrate strategic sustainable development into the decisions and upstream design of plans and programs.

Analysis of Total Cost of Ownership for Medium Scale Cloud Service Provider with emphasis on Technology and Security2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Total cost of ownership is a great factor to consider when deciding to deploy cloud computing. The cost to own a data centre or run a data centre outweighs the thought of IT manager or owner of the business organisation. The research work is concerned with specifying the factors that sum the TCO for medium scale service providers with respect to technology and security. A valid analysis was made with respect to the cloud service providers expenses and how to reduce the cost of ownership. In this research work, a review of related articles was used from a wide source, reading through the abstract and overview of the articles to find its relevance to the subject. A further interview was conducted with two medium scale cloud service providers and one cloud user.In this study, an average calculation of the TCO was made and we implemented a proposed cost reduction method. We made a proposal on which and how to decide as to which cloud services users should deploy in terms of cost and security. We conclude that many articles have focused their TCO calculation on the building without making emphasis on the security. The security accumulates huge amount under hidden cost and this research work identified the hidden cost, made an average calculation and proffer a method of reducing the TCO.

Stadsodling som social hållbarhet: En fallstudie av Odlingsnätverket Seved2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

How age diversity on the Board of Directors affects Firm Performance2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A great number of studies have shown that the composition of the board of directors can have a significant impact upon firm performance. Early studies on board composition focused on factors such as independence of directors, with the impact of cognitive diversity in decision making gaining recognition only in the last few years. Recent diversity studies have focused on gender diversity with interesting but mixed results. We further explore the relationship between diversity and firm performance by studying the companies listed on the OMX Stockholm exchange between 2005 and 2009. Proportionally selecting one third of companies and every other year - total sample size of 258 measurements - we performed regression analysis of the effects of age diversity on the board (given by standard deviation of ages) upon financial and market performance (given by ROA and Tobin‟s Q respectively). The analysis tested whether age diversity on the board improved firm performance, whether the effects were greater in small firms, and whether nonlinear “diminishing returns” appeared in situations with very high board diversity. As other studies have shown that board size, director tenure and gender diversity can all affect performance, we control for these factors as well as for mean director age, industry and firm size. After discovering that our metrics, ROA and Tobin‟s Q, do not correlate for small and medium size firms, but only for large firms with a market cap above EUR 1 billion, we argue that ROA is a better measurement of firm performance. We found that age diversity significantly affects firm performance as measured by ROA, but not as measured by Tobin‟s Q. We further found that the effects are only evident when the company belongs to the small-cap category with a market cap below EUR 150 million. The size of the effect differs depending on what measurement years are included in the analysis, and how long the time delay is between the measurement of age diversity and firm performance. We found that the effect of age diversity is slightly lower for ROA measured during the same year, compared to ROA measured two years later. Finally, our data did not support conclusions either way as to diminishing returns occuring in situations of extremely high age diversity, as too few such firms were found in the sample. In light of these findings, age diversity should be given equal weight to other considerations when composing a successful corporate board in small firms.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Acoustic Noise and Echo Cancelling: Microphone Array Methods and Applications1997Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This Licentiate thesis is divided into three parts corresponding to three different papers. There is one research report, one conference paper and one submitted journal paper. All three parts deal with acoustic echo and/or noise cancelling problems when using adaptive microphone arrays. In particular, the papers address the performance of an adaptive microphone array in a small enclosure such as the car cabin. A calibrating scheme is proposed which is independent of array geometry and channel matching, and which calibrates the adaptive array to the given acoustic environment and to the given electronic equipment. Results from real measurements in a car interior are included and compared with an analytical description of an adaptive microphone array. Part A gives an analytical description of an adaptive microphone array which facilitates a simple built-in calibration to the environment and instrumentation. Part B describes the method for performing acoustic echo cancelling with a dig-ital "on-site", "self-calibrating" microphone array system. The calibration process is a simple indirect calibration which continuously adapts to the actual environment and electronic equipment. There is a US patent based on this part and an international patent is currently under examination. Part C presents a neural network based microphone array system, which is capable to continuously perform speech enhancement and adaptation to nonuniform quantization, such as A-law and µ-law.

A Neural Network Trained Microphone Array System for Noise Reduction1996Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a neural network based microphone array system, which is capable to continuously perform speech enhancement and adaptation to nonuniform quantization, such as A-law and $mu@-law. Such a quantizer is designed to increase the Signal to Quantization Noise Ratio (SQNR) for small amplitudes in telecommunications systems. The proposed method primarily developed for hands-free mobile telephones, suppresses the ambient car noise with approximately 10 dB. The system is based upon a multi-layered nonlinear back-propagation trained network by using a built-in calibration technique.

A novel method of performing acoustic echo canceling using microphone arrays is presented. The method employs a digital self-calibrating microphone system. The calibration process is a simple indirect on-site calibration that adapts to the particulars of the acoustic environment and the electronic equipment in use. Primarily intended for handsfree telephones in automobiles, the method simultaneously suppresses the handsfree loudspeaker and car noise. The system also continuously takes into account disturbances such as fan noise. Examples from an extensive evaluation in a car are also included. Typical performance results demonstrate 20-dB echo cancellation and 10-dB noise reduction simultaneously.

Antenna Array Design using Dual Nested Complex Approximation2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a new practical approach to complex Chebyshev approximation by semi-infinite linear programming. The approximation problem may be general with arbitrary complex basis functions. By the new front-end technique, the associated semi-infinite linear programming problem is solved exploiting the finiteness of the related Lagrange multipliers by adapting finite--dimensional linear programming to the dual semi--infinite problem, and thereby taking advantage of the numerical stability and efficiency of conventional linear programming software packages. Furthermore, the optimization procedure is simple to describe theoretically and straightforward to implement in computer coding. The new design technique is therefore highly accessible. The new algorithm is formally introduced as the linear Dual Nested Complex Approximation (DNCA) algorithm. The DNCA algorithm is versatile and can be applied to a variety of applications such as narrow-band as well as broad-band beamformers with any geometry, conventional Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters, analog and digital Laguerre networks, and digital FIR equalizers. The proposed optimization technique is applied to several numerical examples dealing with the design of a narrow-band base-station antenna array for mobile communication. The flexibility and numerical efficiency of the proposed design technique are illustrated with these examples where hundreds of antenna elements are optimized without numerical difficulties.

Simultaneous Echo Cancellation and Car Noise Suppression Employing a Microphone Array1997Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a method to simultaneously perform 20 dB acoustic echo cancellation and 15-20 dB speech enhancement using an adaptive microphone array combined with spectral subtraction. Primarily intended for handsfree telephones in automobiles, the microphone array system simultaneously emphasizes the near-end talker and suppresses the handsfree loudspeaker and the broadband car noise. The array system is based on a fast and efficient on-site calibration and can be used in other situations such as conventional speaker phones.
