Antenna Array Design using Dual Nested Complex Approximation2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a new practical approach to complex Chebyshev approximation by semi-infinite linear programming. The approximation problem may be general with arbitrary complex basis functions. By the new front-end technique, the associated semi-infinite linear programming problem is solved exploiting the finiteness of the related Lagrange multipliers by adapting finite--dimensional linear programming to the dual semi--infinite problem, and thereby taking advantage of the numerical stability and efficiency of conventional linear programming software packages. Furthermore, the optimization procedure is simple to describe theoretically and straightforward to implement in computer coding. The new design technique is therefore highly accessible. The new algorithm is formally introduced as the linear Dual Nested Complex Approximation (DNCA) algorithm. The DNCA algorithm is versatile and can be applied to a variety of applications such as narrow-band as well as broad-band beamformers with any geometry, conventional Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters, analog and digital Laguerre networks, and digital FIR equalizers. The proposed optimization technique is applied to several numerical examples dealing with the design of a narrow-band base-station antenna array for mobile communication. The flexibility and numerical efficiency of the proposed design technique are illustrated with these examples where hundreds of antenna elements are optimized without numerical difficulties.

Simultaneous Echo Cancellation and Car Noise Suppression Employing a Microphone Array1997Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a method to simultaneously perform 20 dB acoustic echo cancellation and 15-20 dB speech enhancement using an adaptive microphone array combined with spectral subtraction. Primarily intended for handsfree telephones in automobiles, the microphone array system simultaneously emphasizes the near-end talker and suppresses the handsfree loudspeaker and the broadband car noise. The array system is based on a fast and efficient on-site calibration and can be used in other situations such as conventional speaker phones.

A New General Front-End Technique for Complex Quadratic Programming: Applications to Array Pattern Synthesis2000Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a new practical approach to complex quadratic programming which solves the broad class of complex approximation problems employing finitization of semi-infinite formulations. The approximation problem may be general with arbitrarily complex basis functions. By using a new technique, the associated semi-infinite quadratic programming problem can be solved taking advantage of the numerical stability and efficiency of conventional quadratic programming software packages. Furthermore, the optimization procedure is simple to describe theoretically and straightforward to implement in computer coding. The new design technique is therefore highly accessible. The complex approximation algorithm is versatile and can be applied to a variety of applications such as narrow-band as well as broad-band beamformers with any geometry, conventional FIR filters, digital Laguerre networks, and digital FIR equalizers. The new algorithm is formally introduced as the quadratic Dual Nested Complex Approximation (DNCA) algorithm. The essence of the new technique, justified by the Caratheodory's dimensionality theorem, is to exploit the finiteness of the related Lagrange multipliers by adapting conventional finite-dimensional quadratic programming to the semi-infinite quadratic programming re-formulation of complex approximation problems. The design criterion in our application is to minimize the side-lobe energy of an antenna array when subjected to a specified bound on the peak side-lobe level. Additional linear constraints are used to form the main-lobe. The design problem is formulated as a semi-infinite quadratic program and solved by using the new front-end applied on top of a software package for conventional finite-dimensional quadratic programming. The proposed optimization technique is applied to several numerical examples dealing with the design of a narrow-band base-station antenna array for mobile communication. The flexibility and numerical efficiency of the proposed design technique are illustrated with these examples where even hundreds of antenna elements are optimized without numerical difficulties.

Engaging Action: A Systemic Approach to Communication Design of Social Marketing Campaigns for Behaviour Adoption2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Shifting towards sustainability in environmental, social and economic systems is an urgent concern for society today. In order to contribute to this, the thesis focuses on behaviour orientated social marketing campaigns, which can complement the broader changes required. This study adds knowledge to communication design for social marketing campaigns to improve the conversion of information to action helping move society towards a more sustainable future. Results, drawn from the literature, case studies and interviews, demonstrated the need for a shared vision, detailed knowledge of both the audience and behaviour, development of a network to support the campaign and better use of behavioural psychology and social media. Overall it was found that a more strategic approach is needed during the design and implementation of social marketing campaigns. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) was used to structure findings and provide context for campaigners. In practice the FSSD would be used to inform The Strategic Planning Process (SPP), proposed for development of social marketing campaigns that move society towards sustainability.

Traffic Engineering in a Bluetooth Piconet2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Bluetooth technology is still in an early stage of development. Much more research can and will be done before the performance of Bluetooth reaches its peak. During the recent years, ideas to integrate Bluetooth units in larger networks have arose, with the Bluetooth unit in the role as access point to the network. This behavior opens up for new possibilities but also increases the requirements on performance. In this thesis the main topic is improvement of piconet performance. The piconet, with the Master unit as access point, is studied from a teletraffic engineering point of view. Different performance attributes and behaviors have been found and investigated. With the outcome of these investigations in mind, new and more efficient policies and algorithms are proposed for both data and voice. A policy increasing the utilization of available bandwidth in a piconet is presented. Furthermore, a proposal is presented where multiple Bluetooth units are used in an efficient manner to support voice calls. The proposed solution does also enable creation of simple teletraffic models to be used for dimensioning.

Multi AP concepts for SCO traffic in a Bluetooth based Radio Infrastructure Network2002Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we consider a radio infrastructure network (RIN), which consists of Bluetooth Access Points (APs) to provide services to ad hoc users. The RIN inherently supports both voice and data connectivity. Since Bluetooth offers the establishment of Synchronous Circuit-Oriented (SCO) traffic, the concept under study features a low-cost alternative to indoor cellular base stations. However, a single AP can serve a maximum of only three SCO channels and may not be capable of satisfying the voice traffic demands in hot spots. In order to offer more bandwidth in a location with high voice traffic, two or more APs may be placed in the same coverage area. Respective AP clusters will be denoted as Multi APs. Three Multi AP concepts for doing the SCO allocation are presented and discussed. Our findings show that employing Multi APs significantly reduces the blocking probability.

Multi AP Strategies for SCO Traffic in a Bluetooth based Wireless LAN2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) consisting of Bluetooth Access Points (APs). Thus, it inherently offers both ad-hoc voice and data connectivity. As Bluetooth supports Synchronous Circuit-Oriented (SCO) traffic, the concept under study features a low-cost alternative to indoor cellular base stations. Due to the limitation of only three available SCO channels per AP, several APs can be placed in the same coverage area to satisfy voice traffic demands in hot spots. Such AP clusters will be denoted as Multi AP. Three Multi AP strategies for handling the SCO allocation are presented and discussed in terms of signaling and mean time to connect. Our findings show that employing Multi APs significantly reduces the blocking probability. A simple dimensioning rule for the number of APs is given.

Kopieringsskydd och lagar: rätt väg i kampen mot piratkopieringen?2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, it is often reported about piracy copying in the mass media. Anyone can, with little knowledge and cost, copy films, music, games and software, which often also are easily accessible on the Internet. No one can quite understand or answer how big this problem is, and for whom. Organisations and companies within the line of business are trying with different means to deal with the trend that copied, digital information is getting a larger spread and demand amongst consumers. This by trying to develop improved copy protection, and by working for more stringent legislation amongst copyright for digitally based products. The questions we asked ourselves were, if new laws and copy protection have any impact on the consumers and if it’s possible for the organisations to make use of the Internet instead of seeing it as a threat. To get an answer to this, we have among other things tried to find out the meaning of copy protection, which various types of copy protection that exists and how well they are functioning. We have also illustrated the fact that the legality of copy protecttion is questioned, this because according to the copyright laws in different countries, you have the right to make a copy for your own personal use. We have examined the attitudes of copying amongst producers and consumers of digital information and how they can be brought closer together in the struggle that is being carried out between them. We have also investigated the economic losses and effects due to piracy copying, and if there are any suggested measures for dealing with piracy copying, besides copy protection and laws. Through an inquiry along with interviews, we have investigated how much a person downloads and/or copies, and if copy protection and legal actions have a deterrent effect on the sole individual. This we have put in relation to the organisations’ attempt to prevent piracy copying, to see if there are any alternative ways to overcome the problem. The answer is that copy protection and laws are not the right methods in the battle against piracy copying. This is proven by the consumers’ attitude towards copy protection, i.e. there is always a way around them, and products that have been copy protected cannot be used satisfyingly. It is also proven by the fact that neither the consumers, nor the actors of the law, think that the copyright law has an affect towards the sole individual. Instead, the organisations within the line of business should use the Internet for distribution of their products, and make use of its advantages. In that way, the organisations can supply their products in a way that is comfortable and easily available for the consumers, and at a lower cost compared to today.

Personers upplevelser av återhämtningsperioden efter en hjärtinfarkt: vägen mot en hälsosam transition2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Digital Game Competence: Literacy or Repertoire?2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. Digital games are an important application of software due to its growing popularity in society. As digital games are introduced in a growing number of homes we see a rapidly extending user base ranging from young to elderly. Since digital games now have reached beyond the early adopters and now engage a range of users that are more unfamiliar with the context of digital games and thus less trained and schooled in the clichés of digital games, the importance of previous knowledge in the digital games area are entering a sort of common knowledge to interpret and make meaning of society. Objectives. The thesis cover two related aspects of basic digital game competences; firstly a theoretical review of the topic that secondly is followed by a study where we investigate how experienced players learn to play a digital game together and which types of activities they utilize in order to do so. Methods. This thesis consists of two parts with different methods; a review of the term and concept of game literacy as well as a case study performed as an interaction analysis of players engaging with a new digital game. For the second part the interaction analysis was conducted in three phases 1) recording of players and notes of timestamps of interesting situations, 2) actual interaction analysis and transcribing and 3) review. To be able to show a modus operandi for the players’ interaction and learning situations, a single pair of players were selected, and therefore also allowed for a chronological presentation of the play session and learning situations. Results. In the first part of the thesis we present our results concerning that the use of the term game literacy is not consistent throughout the discourse, but rather two different viewpoints. Furthermore we suggest a taxonomy that allow for a more continuous view of game literacy knowledge than previously presented. Secondly we show that competences from previous games not always allow for a more efficient play performance due to the fact that different games have different cognitive schemas. Conclusions. We conclude that concepts like game literacy and “the player’s repertoire” where it is suggested that the player builds on previous knowledge to perform better within any game should be viewed with more criticism than previously. Previous experience of how a game function and the solution to solve problems in other games may not be fruitful at all. Players that utilize the same cognitive schemas they developed in other games could be hindered when trying to play a new game. Furthermore we conclude that the “reflective” learning style that other researchers (i.e. Gee) refer to, when playing games, is not the only one and that the players take some time to reach a reflecting level during play.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Designing for Awareness and Accountability with Tangible Computing2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This project has been devoted to design a computer system with a tangible user interface, in the context of future supervision of remote drop-in dialysis patients. The tangible computer system was developed as an example of how two concepts in human work, accountability and awareness, can be supported through tangible user interfaces. A current trend within CSCW discusses accountability in design in terms of how software should make its own actions accountable. We choose to use an alternative route, namely to use the tangible interface for explicating nurses and patients actions for each other. Explicating actions is key benefit with a tangible interface in work environments that is physical co-located. We conclude that our strategy can be investigated further in settings where the work is carried out in a physical co-located space.

    Abstract [sv]

Resultat: I resultatet framkom två stycken huvudkategorier.

    Abstract [sv]

Mätning av besökares ljudtrycksdos under musikfestival2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Transitioning towards sustainable management of building materials in China2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research is to examine how The Natural Step Framework, combined with Life Cycle Assessment and Ecological Footprint could help to manage the sustainability challenges of construction materials in China and to consider how these tools and concepts might inform each other in combination. Based on a literature review regarding the current reality of building materials in China and industry experience with use of existing sustainability concepts and tools, we build a conceptual model to integrate the three above concepts and attempt to analyse how they could work better together in the management of a sustainable transition. We then analyse the likely strengths and limitations of such an integrated model and finally use this to inform a vision of a sustainable future for building materials, discussing how the model may help China move towards sustainability.

ICT and Education in Developing Countries: Shifting Initiatives toward a Sustainable Society2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research investigates capacity building initiatives in developing countries’ ability to aid in a transition toward sustainability. A key system, the education sector, enables and creates human capacity. Teacher Training Initiatives (TTIs) are an organized effort to build the capacity of teachers within the education sector. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are a rising addition to TTIs that can expand the network, knowledge-sharing, and communication potential of TTIs. Yet, is this growing trend aiding in building capacity at the expense of long-term sustainability? Utilizing the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, this research employs literature reviews, interviews, data analysis, workshop participation, and an expert panel to illuminate how ICT enabled TTIs can contribute to sustainability. An intervention in the current planning process was identified as a key leverage point to shift the system toward sustainability. Taking a whole systems perspective when planning initiatives better equip stakeholders to build effective programs today that will not compromise the capacity building of the future. This upstream approach may build the foundation to move toward a strategic ICT enabled TTI, but it is not the only major factor. ICT enabled TTIs function within complex systems, requiring ongoing strategic planning and management toward sustainability.

Research on Cultural Continuity in Historical District Renewal2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The historical district is formed during a long time of the city development. It contains special architecture and human landscapes. With the process of urban modernization, the historical district imminently needs renewal by improving the building quality, repairing the space environment in order to protect the cultural information in the historical district. Historical district renewal is a most popular topic in the urban development in China. Nowadays many historical districts are going to be rebuilt. Among all the cultural, social and economic factors, the cultural continuity does not as obvious as economic or social reflection, it is easily forgotten. This paper is seeking for the combination among the urban cultural elements, the special conditions of historical district and the theory of the sustainable development based on the analysis of problems existing in the historical districts. It is important to describe the sustainable renewal from the aspect of cultural continuity in the historical district. Based on the sum-up experience of the case studies, this paper tries to classify the renewal to different types and see the different cultural performance in those types. The theoretical tools and case studies are all taken into the paper to give the final suggestion to continue cultural elements in the historical district renewal. Finally, this paper gives a new attempt to create a residential area for elderly people after the analysis and discussion.

Förutsättningar för tillväxt i en gränsregion2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Analysis of a force and moment measurement system for a transonic wind tunnel2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Low eigenfrequency force and moment measurement systems used for aero-elastic wind tunnel investigations of airplane wing models have been found prone to resonance at dynamic loading. A new suggested design characterized by having high eigenfrequencies and believed suitable for measurements in such experiments is analyzed in the present work. Flexibility and frequency response characteristics of the studied device including piezo electric transducers mounted in a balance are studied using finite element software. Stress levels are found low in general except for a pin experiencing high shear stress. Reasons for this are discussed. The found modal characteristics provide a basis for further experimental investigations.

    Risk indicators for Peri-implantitis: A cross-sectional study with 916 implants2016In: Clinical Oral Implants Research, ISSN 0905-7161, E-ISSN 1600-0501, Vol. 28, no 2, p. 144-150Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify systemic and local risk indicators associated with peri-implantitis. Material and methods: One hundred eighty-three patients treated with 916 osseointegrated titanium implants, in function for at least 1 year, were included in the present study. The implants were installed at the Foundation for Scientific and Technological Development of Dentistry (FUNDECTO) - University of Sao Paulo (USP) - from 1998 to 2012. Factors related to patient’s systemic conditions (heart disorders, hypertension, smoking habits, alcoholism, liver disorders, hepatitis, gastrointestinal disease, diabetes mellitus I and II, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, menopause, osteoporosis, active periodontal disease, history of periodontal disease and bruxism), implant’s characteristics (location, diameter, length, connection, shape, and antagonist), and clinical parameters (wear facets, periodontal status on the adjacent tooth, plaque accumulation on the adjacent tooth, modified plaque index, sulcus bleeding index, probing depth, bleeding on probing, width of keratinized tissue and marginal recession). Results: An increased risk of 2.2 times for history of periodontal disease (PD), 3.6 times for cemented restorations compared to screw-retained prostheses, 2.4 times when wear facets were displayed on the prosthetic crown and 16.1 times for total rehabilitations when compared to single rehabilitations were found. Logistic regression analysis did not show any association between the implant’s characteristics and peri-implantitis. Conclusions: A history of periodontal disease, cemented prostheses, presences of wear facets on the prosthetic crown and full mouth rehabilitations were identified as risk indicators for peri-implantitis. Implants’ characteristics were not related to the presence of peri-implantitis. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

Low Light Video Enhancement along with Objective and Subjective Quality Assessment2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Enhancing low light videos has been quite a challenge over the years. A video taken in low light always has the issues of low dynamic range and high noise. This master thesis presents contribution within the field of low light video enhancement. Three models are proposed with different tone mapping algorithms for extremely low light low quality video enhancement. For temporal noise removal, a motion compensated kalman structure is presented. Dynamic range of the low light video is stretched using three different methods. In Model 1, dynamic range is increased by adjustment of RGB histograms using gamma correction with a modified version of adaptive clipping thresholds. In Model 2, a shape preserving dynamic range stretch of the RGB histogram is applied using SMQT. In Model 3, contrast enhancement is done using CLAHE. In the final stage, the residual noise is removed using an efficient NLM. The performance of the models are compared on various Objective VQA metrics like NIQE, GCF and SSIM.

To evaluate the actual performance of the models subjective tests are conducted, due to the large number of applications that target humans as the end user of the video. The performance of the three models are compared for a total of ten real time input videos taken in extremely low light environment. A total of 25 human observers subjectively evaluated the performance of the three models based on the parameters: contrast, visibility, visually pleasing, amount of noise and overall quality. A detailed statistical evaluation of the relative performance of the three models is also provided.

    Abstract [sv]

European Innovation Policy through the European Regional Development Fund: A case study of East-Netherlands2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study is analysed how the ERDF (European Regional Development Funding) in East-Netherlands approaches innovation and how this approach is shaped and complemented byEuropean, national and regional policy. This is done by analysing how the targeted interventionapproach and the institutional approach are used in the ERDF and adjacent policies. The twoapproaches are both based on a different argument on how innovation policy makes an impact.By doing this the study contributes to the analysis of European policy and it empirically appliesconcepts used in theory on innovation and regional economic development. This gives policy makersinput for the development of innovation policy and especially for the development of Europeanpolicy post 2020. For academia this study shows theoretical gaps in the concepts applied andprovides suggestions for further research on these concepts. The study concludes that ERDF fundingin East-Netherlands is strongly based on the targeted intervention approach. The use of thisapproach results from the governance structure under which ERDF is implemented. The EU 2020strategy has been influential in the final shape of the policy, while the national level has a lessimportant role. Innovation policy at the regional level complements the ERDF policy because it is alsobased on concepts from the targeted intervention approach. The institutional policy implemented atthe European and national level has weaker links with the ERDF programme.

Non-Causal Delayless Subband Adaptive Equalizer2002Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In wireless communication, multiple versions of the transmitted signals arrive at the receiver with different attenuations and time delays. Thus, an equalizer with long filter is required at the receiver to reverse the multipath effects. In this paper, a new non-causal delayless subband equalizer structure is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the equalizer and to improve the channel tracking capability. This structure avoids the additional delays usually associated with the subband schemes. A design method is formulated to minimize the aliasing effect of the filter bank in the subbands. The significance of employing a non-causal equalizer is also emphasized. Simulation results show that the performance of the new structure is significantly improved by using the design method. Moreover, the complexity of the new subband equalizer is a fraction of the equivalent fullband at the expense of small degradation in the performance.

    Abstract [en]

We consider a class of FIR filters defined by the first order difference routing digital filter (DRDF) structure and sums of two powers-of-two coefficients. A novel design method is developed for constructing high quality filters with reference to the min-max error criterion. This method is highly efficient in terms of computational time. Simulation studies show a large improvement over existing methods such as quantization. In some cases, the peak ripple magnitude over the stop and pass bands is reduced by up to 13 dB over the quantization method. These results are achieved even for cases involving small number of delays.

    Abstract [en]

Multi-rate adaptive filters have numerous advantages such as low computational load, fast convergence and parallelism in the adaptation. Drawbacks when using multi-rate processing are mainly related to aliasing and reconstruction effects. These effects can be minimized by introducing appropriate problem formulation and employing sophisticated optimization techniques. In this paper, we propose a formulation for the design of filter bank which controls the distortion level for each frequency component directly and minimizes the inband aliasing and the residual aliasing between different subbands. The advantage of this problem formulation is that the distortion level can be weighted for each frequency depending on the particular practical application. A new iterative algorithm is proposed to optimize simultaneously over both the analysis and the synthesis filter banks. This algorithm is shown to have a unique solution for each iteration. For a fixed distortion level, the proposed algorithm yields a significant reduction in both the inband aliasing and the residual aliasing levels compared to existing methods applied to the numerical examples.

Blind MIMO Equalization in the Frequency Domain2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Broadband wireless systems require low complexity equalizers which can cope with long channel impulse responses and severe intersymbol interference (ISI). In this paper, a frequency domain (FD) approach for adaptive blind equalization for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems is proposed. As an initial step, a time domain (TD) block based updated adaptation is first developed which updates the equalizer coefficients once per each block of data symbols. As such, this algorithm can be equivalently implemented in the FD to reduce computational complexity associated with the symbol by symbol TD update. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can successfully separate and equalize the received signals with a significantly lower computational complexity than a corresponding TD approach.
