A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Community Development in the Developing World2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is an overall consensus that the poor governance and corruption plaguing many developing nations are main inhibitors to progress. These inhibitors also lead to the overwhelming feelings of desperation, apathy, and determinism. International development assistance programs utilizing capacity building have been created to deal with sustainable development issues in the developing world. Often these programs are fragmented and address results, not the causes, of problems. This study assesses how existing community development approaches could be aided through a strategic sustainable development perspective. A majority of the research involved creation of a holistic innovative community development approach, which encourages transformational change and effective leadership, and comparison of that to an existing community development approach. Strengths and limitations were observed through this comparison and generic recommendations were created to support current approaches. The study found that existing development assistance strategies are effective at building capacity and helping communities, but encompassing a more holistic perspective could align planning and decision-making with socio-ecological sustainability and thereby support mid- and long-term progress.

Mobile IP handover delay reduction using seamless handover architecture2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Seamless communication is becoming the main aspect for the next generation of the mobile and wireless networks. Roaming among multiple wireless access networks connected together through one IP core makes the mobility support for the internet is very critical and more important research topics nowadays. Mobile IP is one of the most successful solutions for the mobility support in the IP based networks, but it has poor performance in term of handover delay. Many improvements have been done to reduce the handover delay, which result in two new standards: the Hierarchical MIP (HMIP) and the Fast MIP (FMIP), but the delay still does not match the seamless handover requirements. Finally Seamless MIP (S-MIP) has been suggested by many work groups, which combine between an intelligent handover algorithm and a movement tracking scheme. In This thesis, we show the handover delay reduction approaches, specifically the Seamless Mobile IP. The thesis studies the effects of the S-MIP in the handover delay and the network performance as well. A simulation study takes place to compare between the standard MIP and the new suggested S-MIP protocol in term of handover delay, packet loss and bandwidth requirement. The thesis concludes with the analyzing of the simulation results, evaluating the S-MIP performance and finally gives some suggestions for the future work.

DET OFFENTLIGA RUMMET: EN PLATS FÖR DET PRIVATA? En fallstudie av planeringsärenden i Stockholm2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Maintenance of automated test suites in industry: An empirical study on Visual GUI Testing2016In: Information and Software Technology, ISSN 0950-5849, E-ISSN 1873-6025, Vol. 73, p. 66-80Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context: Verification and validation (V&V) activities make up 20-50% of the total development costs of a software system in practice. Test automation is proposed to lower these V&V costs but available research only provides limited empirical data from industrial practice about the maintenance costs of automated tests and what factors affect these costs. In particular, these costs and factors are unknown for automated GUI-based testing. Objective: This paper addresses this lack of knowledge through analysis of the costs and factors associated with the maintenance of automated GUI-based tests in industrial practice. Method: An empirical study at two companies, Siemens and Saab, is reported where interviews about, and empirical work with, Visual GUI Testing is performed to acquire data about the technique's maintenance costs and feasibility. Results: 13 factors are observed that affect maintenance, e.g. tester knowledge/experience and test case complexity. Further, statistical analysis shows that developing new test scripts is costlier than maintenance but also that frequent maintenance is less costly than infrequent, big bang maintenance. In addition a cost model, based on previous work, is presented that estimates the time to positive return on investment (ROI) of test automation compared to manual testing. Conclusions: It is concluded that test automation can lower overall software development costs of a project while also having positive effects on software quality. However, maintenance costs can still be considerable and the less time a company currently spends on manual testing, the more time is required before positive, economic, ROI is reached after automation. Visual GUI testing in practice: challenges, problems and limitations2015In: Journal of Empirical Software Engineering, ISSN 1382-3256, E-ISSN 1573-7616, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 694-744Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In today’s software development industry, high-level tests such as Graphical User Interface (GUI) based system and acceptance tests are mostly performed with manual practices that are often costly, tedious and error prone. Test automation has been proposed to solve these problems but most automation techniques approach testing from a lower level of system abstraction. Their suitability for high-level tests has therefore been questioned. High-level test automation techniques such as Record and Replay exist, but studies suggest that these techniques suffer from limitations, e.g. sensitivity to GUI layout or code changes, system implementation dependencies, etc. Visual GUI Testing (VGT) is an emerging technique in industrial practice with perceived higher flexi- bility and robustness to certain GUI changes than previous high-level (GUI) test automation techniques. The core of VGT is image recognition which is applied to analyze and interact with the bitmap layer of a system’s front end. By coupling image recognition with test scripts, VGT tools can emulate end user behavior on almost any GUI-based system, regardless of implementation language, operating system or platform. However, VGT is not without its own challenges, problems and limitations (CPLs) but, like for many other automated test techniques, there is a lack of empirically-based knowledge of these CPLs and how they impact industrial applicability. Crucially, there is also a lack of information on the cost of applying this type of test automation in industry. This manuscript reports an empirical, multi-unit case study performed at two Swedish companies that develop safety-critical software. It studies their transition from manual system test cases into tests auto- mated with VGT. In total, four different test suites that together include more than 300 high-level system test cases were automated for two multi-million lines of code systems. The results show that the transitioned test cases could find defects in the tested systems and that all applicable test cases could be automated. However, during these transition projects a number of hurdles had to be addressed; a total of 58 different CPLs were identified and then categorized into 26 types. We present these CPL types and an analysis of the implications for the transition to and use of VGT in industrial software development practice. In addition, four high-level solutions are presented that were identified during the study, which would address about half of the identified CPLs. Furthermore, collected metrics on cost and return on investment of the VGT transition are reported together with information about the VGT suites’ defect finding ability. Nine of the identified defects are reported, 5 of which were unknown to testers with extensive experience from using the manual test suites. The main conclusion from this study is that even though there are many challenges related to the transition and usage of VGT, the technique is still valuable, flexible and considered cost-effective by the industrial practitioners. The presented CPLs also provide decision support in the use and advancement of VGT and potentially other automated testing techniques similar to VGT, e.g. Record and Replay.

Linking Residential Burglaries using the Series Finder Algorithm in a Swedish Context2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. A minority of criminals performs a majority of the crimes today. It is known that every criminal or group of offenders to some extent have a particular pattern (modus operandi) how crime is performed. Therefore, computers' computational power can be employed to discover crimes that have the same model and possibly are carried out by the same criminal. The goal of this thesis was to apply the existing Series Finder algorithm to a feature-rich dataset containing data about Swedish residential burglaries.

Objectives. The following objectives were achieved to complete this thesis: Modifications performed on an existing Series Finder implementation to fit the Swedish police forces dataset and MatLab code converted to Python. Furthermore, experiment setup designed with appropriate metrics and statistical tests. Finally, modified Series Finder implementation's evaluation performed against both Spatial-Temporal and Random models.

Methods. The experimental methodology was chosen in order to achieve the objectives. An initial experiment was performed to find right parameters to use for main experiments. Afterward, a proper investigation with dependent and independent variables was conducted.

Results. After the metrics calculations and the statistical tests applications, the accurate picture revealed how each model performed. Series Finder showed better performance than a Random model. However, it had lower performance than the Spatial-Temporal model. The possible causes of one model performing better than another are discussed in analysis and discussion section.

Conclusions. After completing objectives and answering research questions, it could be clearly seen how the Series Finder implementation performed against other models. Despite its low performance, Series Finder still showed potential, as presented in future work.

Perspectives on the Elements of Packaging Design: A Qualitative Study on the Communication of Packaging2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In today’s markets almost all products we buy come packaged. We use packaging to protect, contain and identify products. Furthermore if this is executed in a skillful way consumers often choose products based on packaging. The work of a designer and marketer is therefore extremely valuable when it comes to the design of a package. Problem: How are packages used to communicate marketing information? Purpose: The focus of this thesis is to identify differences and similarities of a packaging's visual elements from the perspectives of designers and marketers. Method: Interviews with designers and marketers. The theoretical knowledge has served as the basis for our empirical work and lead to a research model from which an interview guide was formed. Conclusion: According to our respondents and theory, packaging is a big component in a brand's marketing strategy that communicates the brand’s message and values. Marketing information can be designed into visual elements that are used on the package to communicate a message that speaks to consumers' emotions. Our results showed that 'color' is the visual element the professionals use to catch the attention of consumers and most effectively influence their emotions. Designers and marketers can together achieve successful packaging as the designer combines design elements that tell the brand's story and the marketer knows how the package sells and maximizes profit today.

Simone de Beauvoirs feminism: De digitala spelen idag2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Fuzzy Based power control system Using ANFIS and MIMO-OFDM Techniques in Cognitive Radio Networks2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Cognitive Radio technology is used for efficient utilization of the spectrum. There are two types of users, one is the Primary user (PU), and the second one is the Secondary user (SU). In those users, PU is having the license to use the spectrum. The SU does not have the license to use the spectrum. Cognitive Radio comprises of Spectrum sensing, Spectrum Management and Spectrum Mobility. In cognitive radio, optimal power control in spectrum sharing is main research issues. In the spectrum, sharing both PU and SU can access the spectrum simultaneously as long as there is no interference to PU’s of Quality of service (QOS). So we have to handle this interference to the PU and we have to improve the performance of the SU. For that power control is the main consternate to improve the performance of SU. In our thesis, we are divided into two parts, the first one is we used ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System) for optimizing power control in cognitive radio network Users (SU) by optimization of SNR & SINR at Primary User (PU) to maintain QOS of PU and improve the performance of SU and Channel capacity computation for various ISR tolerance levels at PU. In second part, we used implementation of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple output)-OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) transmission technique in CRN (Cognitive Radio networks) for it is use in emergency conditions where transmission requires reliability and high data rate. Then it is tested BER (Bit error rate) performance on MATLAB. Key words: Cognitive Radio, Power Control, the Fuzzy Interference System (FIS), ANFIS, “MIMO” (“Multiple Input Multiple Output”), “OFDM” (“Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing”), AWGN, BER, SNR, Eb/N0

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hur behandlar kommunala belysningsprogram estetik och trygghet?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Study the Performance of the Use of SIP for Video Conferencing2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The recent decades have witnessed enormous development in communication world; especially in internet technology that has played an important role in moving forward the human communications, with such development user demands better communication services such as video conferencing. Video conferencing becomes more popular nowadays since it can break the constraints on the communication ways of people who are probably exist in diverse geographical locations in real time. SIP is preferred to be used as signaling protocol for video conferencing, but still using SIP for video conferencing is affected by the delay which reduces the satisfaction of user as it decreases the QoS. This thesis work is aimed to study the performance of SIP signaling for video conferencing, and also describing the causes of the delay in SIP session establishment and termination. The literature review and the two simulations have been carried out in this thesis to examine the effect of specific parameters on the session setup delay. The first study is carried out by using ns-2 to simulate different transport protocols and study their effect on session setup delay. The second study is carried out by using SIPp to achieve two objects. The first object is to study the relationship between number of simultaneous calls on both the session setup delay and call release delay, while the second object is to verify the result of changing transport modes of transport protocol for both session setup delay and call release delay. The results obtained from first simulation showed that utilizing UDP as transport protocol will return less session setup delay than TCP and SCTP. The first objective of the second simulation results clarify the relationship between number of simultaneous calls on both the session setup delay and call release delay which was directly proportional; on the other hand the second object showed that by using UDP in mono socket mode has less session setup delay and call release delay.

    Abstract [sv]

European Community Measures to Reduce Nitrate Pollution2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Water protection proves to be a difficult task, whether it is dealt with through legislation or the implementation of a process to reduce further pollution. This study considers how the issue of water pollution from nitrates in agricultural practices has become better understood through the reforms of the common agriculture policy (CAP) and the enactment of various regulations and directives by EU. The implementation of the EC Nitrate Directive is a main focus of this study because it was a major movement towards protecting water against pollution from agriculture, and an important step in implementing the Water Framework Directive. The implementation process is analyzed from both a formal and practical perspective, along with a discussion of the difficulties that arose in the implementation phase. There is a focus on the implementation of the Nitrate Directive in UK, with an emphasis on England as a case study. The study finds that if the distribution of responsibilities (planning, regulating, implementing, and reporting) is shared between national, regional and local bodies, the compliance with political regulations becomes easier. It is also concluded that rearrangements of the existing institutions are necessary to reduce costs, exchange new ideas that could translate to regulative ideas, and create an atmosphere of trust between regulators and implementers. It can be concluded from this study that, despite the traditional centralization of governments, England has taken several steps towards integrating institutions and has tried to be open and responsive to the local communities. Finally, there are several lessons that can be learned from the UK’s approach to control nitrate pollution, which are discussed and outlined in the conclusion of this study.

Measurement Tools for IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS)2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

is indeed a milestone. Next Generation Network (NGN) is an IP network which facilitates researcher to achieve this milestone. IP Multimedia Sub-system (IMS) makes possible to deliver IP multimedia services to users. IMS uses Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as a signalling protocol. Since IMS involves lot of signalling between IMS entities and other network elements, accordingly the signalling must guarantee quality of service. Test beds and measuring tools help us to perform various tests according to our need. These tests should be carried in early stages of development with designer in structured way according to well defined process and methods. Initially this thesis aims to identify useful tools for IMS which can develop an appropriate IMS service creation environment. The basic task involves decoding of SIP message and to gather response time information. Finally to provide a proposal which tool is suitable for measuring signalling protocol regarding performance, exportability and hardware requirements.

A Performance Evaluation of RPL in Contiki2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A Wireless Sensor Network is formed of several small devices encompassing the capability of sensing a physical characteristic and sending it hop by hop to a central node via low power and short range transceivers. The Sensor network lifetime strongly depends on the routing protocol in use. Routing protocol is responsible for forwarding the traffic and making routing decisions. If the routing decisions made are not intelligent, more re-transmissions will occur across the network which consumes limited resources of the wireless sensor network like energy, bandwidth and processing. Therefore a careful and extensive performance analysis is needed for the routing protocols in use by any wireless sensor network. In this study we investigate Objective Functions and the most influential parameters on Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy Network (RPL) performance in Contiki (WSN OS) and then evaluate RPL performance in terms of Energy, Latency, Packet Delivery Ratio, Control overhead, and Convergence Time for the network. We have carried out extensive simulations yielding a detailed analysis of different RPL parameters with respect to the five performance metrics. The study provides an insight into the different RPL settings suitable for different application areas. Experimental results show ETX is a better objective, and that ContikiRPL provides very efficient network Convergence (14s), Control traffic overhead (1300 packets), Energy consumption (1.5% radio on time), Latency (0.5s), and Packet Delivery Ratio (98%) in our sample RPL simulation of one hour with 80 nodes, after careful configuration of DIO interval minimum/doublings, Radio duty cycling, and Frequency of application messages.

    Abstract [sv]

Usability Requirements for GIS Application: Comparative Study of Google Maps on PC and Smartphone2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: Smartphone is gaining popularity due to its feasible mobility, computing capacity and efficient energy. Emails, text messaging, navigation and visualizing geo-spatial data through browsers are common features of smartphone. Display of geo-spatial data is collected in computing format and made publically available. Therefore the need of usability evaluation becomes important due to its increasing demand. Identifying usability requirements are important as conventional functional requirements in software engineering. Non-functional usability requirements are objectives and testable using measurable metrics. Objectives: Usability evaluation plays an important role in the interaction design process as well as identifying user needs and requirements. Comparative usability requirements are identified for the evaluation of a geographical information system (Google Maps) on personal computer (Laptop) and smartphone (iPhone). Methods: ISO 9241-11 guide on usability is used as an input model for identifying and specifying usability level of Google Maps on both personal computer and smartphone for intended output. Authors set target value for usability requirements of tasks and questionnaire on each device, such as acceptability level of tasks completion, rate of efficiency and participant’s agreement of each measure through ISO 9241-11 respectively. The usability test is conducted using Co-discovery technique on six pairs of graduate students. Interviews are conducted for validation of test results and questionnaires are distributed to get feedback from participants. Results: The non-functional usability requirements were tested and used five metrics measured on user performance and satisfaction. Through usability test, the acceptability level of tasks completion and rate of efficiency was matched on personal computer but did not match on iPhone. Through questionnaire, both the devices did not match participant’s agreement of each measure but only effectiveness matched on personal computer. Usability test, interview and questionnaire feedback are included in the results. Conclusions: The authors provided suggestions based on test results and identified usability issues for the improvement of Google Maps on personal computer and iPhone.

    Abstract [en]

Faiveley Transport Nordic AB is a company in Landskrona and which is an international supplier in the railway industry. The industry sight in landskrona is mostly focused on developing and manufacturing train brakes.Today, Faiveley has a number of test benches that needs regular checks and re-calibration every three months. In the current situation, it is the responsibility of the lab engineer to check that the calibration is correct on the test benches and adjust if needed. The purpose of this research is to design a reference object that will be used for checking the calibration on a test bench.During the research, the product development process was used with some tools from the design thinking process. The research begins with a lot of theoretical background about BFC (Brake Friction Concept), test benches and calibration to develop a deeper understanding for the different concepts.Since Faiveley had already identified the problem, the method was started directly by looking for other solutions that could inspire the solution to the problem. The search for inspiration was conducted through various methods such as patent searching, trend watching and techwatching. The authors proceeded by choosing the best possible ideas for them to create a prototype of the best concepts. After creating a prototype of the reference object, the objects function was verified by testing on a test bench to check if it meets the preset requirements. The authors were able to get the result for each one of them three measurement parameters such as force, distance and pressure. Results showed that most of the requirements was accomplished.Based on the results several conclusions could be drawn. Such as that the reference object that was the solution to the problem worked and partly fulfills the associated requirements. Through this research a method has been created for how to generate reference values for similar parameters in general contexts, which others interested can use in the future.

Transformational Leadership: The Relationship Between Transformational Leadership and Organizational Performance2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the current economic climate the circumstances and the environment for companies constantly change and organizations which in the future want to be competitive have to adapt to these new conditions and market requirement else they are forced to be out of business. Seeing the rapid change in telecom sector with flat sales in many countries during 2008, 2009 and 2010 Ericsson decided to do a major re organization in 2010. Ericsson management set out to restructure the company to trim off fat and to help the company function as a leaner and more productive entity by assigning transformational leaders that can help company cope with the changing market conditions with focus on business performance, growth, new market segments and getting more close to customer. As a result of that change Ericsson Saudi Arabia that was known as Market Unit Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (MU KSA) part of 23 Market Units across the globe transformed to Customer Unit Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (CU KSA) part of Region Middle East (RMEA) with new Head and management team. By 2009-2010 Ericsson CU KSA was facing issues like flat sales, operators were cautious to spend more money since revenues were declining, emergence of Chinese players in the marker resulted in dramatic culture shift in industry where business models and ways of working changed and Ericsson in Saudi Arabia was having direct impact on revenue and market share. During 2008, 2009 and 2010 Ericsson in Saudi Arabia lost local market share from 60% to 50% and a complete overhaul was inevitable. One of the primary objectives of this study will be to determine the relationship of transformational leadership to organizational performance by analyzing data collected from Ericsson Saudi Arabia. It will be analyzed if new management in Ericsson Saudi Arabia has the capabilities of transformational leadership. Later I’ll try to establish correlation of transformational leadership towards strategic management, Organizational culture and Employee Motivation & Commitment to see if there is any significant impact of these that will help overcome existing market challenges explore new opportunities and redefine strategies while resulting in positive business growth and performance. For the purpose of research a study a mix of qualitative and quantitative approach was chosen. Questionnaire surveys were used as part of quantitative research. Interview surveys together with Sales reports and balanced score cards were used as part of qualitative research. A total of 48 questionnaire surveys along with 8 interviews form different members of management in CU KSA were conducted. Data analysis tool function in Excel was used to figure out mean, median and standard deviation for Transformational leadership attributes. Data analysis tool was also used to calculate correlation coefficient factor between transformational leadership with strategic management, organizational culture and business performance. It was discovered after analysis conducted using interview and survey results that Ericsson CU KSA Head and Management fulfill the criterion of transformational leadership having strong presence of transformational leadership attributes namely vision, Inspirational, role model, support for personal growth, trust and consideration for followers needs. It was also discovered that transformational leadership has a strong correlation towards strategic management, organizational culture, employee Motivation and business performance. Data collected from Interviews, Sales reports and Balanced Score Card supported the data analysis of questionnaire. This means that if companies want to experience growth in their business especially in these days of tough competition, there should be focus on making sure the leadership is transformational with strong emphasis on process of Strategic Management, fostering organization culture and boosting employee motivation & commitment that will lead towards positive Business Performance.

Echo Cancellation using PMSAF and Compare the performance with NLMS and improved PNLMS under different Impulse responses2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the field of signal processing adaptive filtering is a major subject which has vast applications in speech processing e.g. speech coding, speech enhancement, echo cancellation and interference. Echo is the major problem in the communication systems. There are two major types of echoes hybrid and acoustic echoes. In order to remove these echoes the most important method for removing these echoes is through cancellation. Adaptive filters are used to estimate the replication of echoes and then subtracted from the infected signal. . We introduced subband filters to improve the performance of adaptive filter (time domain). Due to small adaptive filters in the subband filter banks, we can improve the reduction of complexity, computational and convergence level as compared with others. The major goal of this thesis is to present the echo cancellation using the multiband subband adaptive filtering and also compare the performance with NLMS and Improved PNLMS using different impulse responses. PMSAF algorithm behaves continuously better convergense rate with excitation signal (colored noise and speech signal) for both impulse responses (sparse and dispersive) as compared with IPNLMS and NLMS algorithms.

Knowledge Management and Sharing Initiatives in Development Sector: Contribution in Effective Risk Management2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis study explores the existing knowledge management and sharing practices in donor organizations, particularly working in the developing countries. The potentional of knowledge management and sharing to facilitate development organizations in carrying out development work has been recognised in the literature. Literature presented mix of critique and appreciation to the existing efforts of donor agencies. Knowledge sharing platforms revolves around the country initiatives and donor agencies like UNDP and World Bank which are proactive in establishing these platforms for partner organizations. This research contributes practical insight to the question of delivery of these platforms, through an empirical investigation based on the development professionals' experiences. As earlier research shows enormous amount of literature on individual, team and organizational level knowledge sharing, this study sets prime focus on community level or external knowledge sharing, an area where there exist a dearth of emperical research or contributing literature on examing the role of sharing initiatives and possible contribution in improving risk management in development projects. Literature shows the potential of knowledge management and sharing practices, as their possible contribution in the global development practices and in bridging gap between North-South stakeholders. However, cultural, technological, organizational and individual level issues escalate with external level of knowledge sharing and thesis rightly, identifies success factors from the literature alongwith their viability from the professionals. It is even more inadequate when it comes to projects of donor organizations in under developed and developing countries. With 80% of documented failure rates of knowledge sharing systems, external knowledge sharing with partner organizations or network organizations is really not adequate and do not have supporting culture. As this whole process of sharing knowledge, heavily relies on the perceived motivation and willingness to share, study has tried to identify the challenges facing wider use of these sharing systems. Study also contributes with suggestions for knowledge management and sharing system developers, policy and decision makers and system users, to improve the overall contribution of knowledge sharing in better risk management. Apart from the cultural barriers, there are technical and policy level issues which need more concerted efforts to improve the use of these sharing systems by various organizations and individuals.

Cloud Computing as a Tool to Secure and Manage Information Flow in Swedish Armed Forces Networks2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the last few years cloud computing has created much hype in the IT world. It has provided new strategies to cut down costs and provide better utilization of resources. Apart from all drawbacks, the cloud infrastructure has been long discussed for its vulnerabilities and security issues. There is a long list of service providers and clients, who have implemented different service structures using cloud infrastructure. Despite of all these efforts many organizations especially with higher security concerns have doubts about the data privacy or theft protection in cloud. This thesis aims to encourage Swedish Armed Forces (SWAF) networks to move to cloud infrastructures as this is the technology that will make a huge difference and revolutionize the service delivery models in the IT world. Organizations avoiding it would lag behind but at the same time organizations should consider to adapt a cloud strategy most reliable and compatible with their requirements. This document provides an insight on different technologies and tools implemented specifically for monitoring and security in cloud. Much emphasize is given on virtualization technology because cloud computing highly relies on it. Amazon EC2 cloud is analyzed from security point of view. An intensive survey has also been conducted to understand the market trends and people’s perception about cloud implementation, security threats, cost savings and reliability of different services provided.

Usability Evaluation of Digital Library BTH a case study2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Libraries have for hundreds of years been an important entity for every kind of institute, especially in the educational sector. So now it is an age of computers and internet. People are now using electronic resources to fulfill their needs and requirements of their life. Therefore libraries have also converted to computerized systems. People can access and use library resources just sitting at their computers by using the internet. This modern way of running a library has been called or given the name of digital libraries. Digital libraries are getting famous for flexibility of use and because more users can be facilitated at a time. As numbers of users are increasing, some issues relevant to interaction also arise while using digital libraries interface and utilizing its e-resources. In this thesis we evaluate usability factors and issues in digital libraries and the authors have taken as a case study the real time existing system of the digital library in BTH. This thesis report describes digital libraries and how users are being facilitated by them. Usability issues are also discussed relevant to digital libraries. Users have been the main source to evaluate and judge usability issues while interacting and using this digital library. The results obtained showed dis¬satisfaction of users regarding the usability evaluation of BTH:s digital library. The authors used usability evaluation techniques to evaluate functionality and services provided by the BTH digital library system interface. Moreover, based on the results of our case study, suggestions of improvement in BTH:s digital library are presented. Hopefully, these suggestions will help to make BTH digital library system more usable in an efficient and effective manner for users.

Towards Innovation Measurement in Software Industry2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: In today’s highly competitive business environment, shortened product and technology life-cycles, it is critical for software industry to continuously innovate. To help an organisation to achieve this goal, a better understanding and control of the activities and determinants of innovation is required. This can be achieved through innovation measurement initiative which assesses innovation capability, output and performance. Objective: This study explores definitions of innovation, innovation measurement frameworks, key elements of innovation and metrics that have been proposed in literature and used in industry. The degree of empirical validation and context of studies was also investigated. It also elicited the perception of innovation, its importance, challenges and state of practice of innovation measurement in software industry. Methods: In this study, a systematic literature review, followed by online questionnaire and face-to-face interviews were conducted. The systematic review used seven electronic databases, including Compendex, Inspec, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Business Source premier, Science Direct and Scopus. Studies were subject to preliminary, basic and advanced criteria to judge the relevance of papers. The online questionnaire targeted software industry practitioners with different roles and firm sizes. A total of 94 completed and usable responses from 68 unique firms were collected. Seven face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with four industry practitioners and three academics. Results: Based on the findings of literature review, interviews and questionnaire a comprehensive definition of innovation was identified which may be used in software industry. The metrics for evaluation of determinants, inputs, outputs and performance were aggregated and categorised. A conceptual model of the key measurable elements of innovation was constructed from the findings of the systematic review. The model was further refined after feedback from academia and industry through interviews. Conclusions: The importance of innovation measurement is well recognised in both academia and industry. However, innovation measurement is not a common practice in industry. Some of the major reasons are lack of available metrics and data collection mechanisms to measure innovation. The organisations which do measure innovation use only a few metrics that do not cover the entire spectrum of innovation. This is partly because of the lack of consistent definition of innovation in industry. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical validation of the metrics and determinants of innovation. Although there is some static validations, full scale industry trials are currently missing. For software industry, a unique challenge is development of alternate measures since some of the existing metrics are inapplicable in this context. The conceptual model constructed in this study is one step towards identifying measurable key aspects of innovation to understanding the innovation capability and performance of software firms.

On the search for industry-relevant regression testing research2019In: Journal of Empirical Software Engineering, ISSN 1382-3256, E-ISSN 1573-7616, Vol. 24, no 4, p. 2020-2055Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Regression testing is a means to assure that a change in the software, or

its execution environment, does not introduce new defects. It involves the expensive

undertaking of rerunning test cases. Several techniques have been proposed

to reduce the number of test cases to execute in regression testing, however, there

is no research on how to assess industrial relevance and applicability of such techniques.

We conducted a systematic literature review with the following two goals:

rstly, to enable researchers to design and present regression testing research with

a focus on industrial relevance and applicability and secondly, to facilitate the industrial

adoption of such research by addressing the attributes of concern from the

practitioners' perspective. Using a reference-based search approach, we identied

1068 papers on regression testing. We then reduced the scope to only include papers

with explicit discussions about relevance and applicability (i.e. mainly studies

involving industrial stakeholders). Uniquely in this literature review, practitioners

were consulted at several steps to increase the likelihood of achieving our aim of

identifying factors important for relevance and applicability. We have summarised

the results of these consultations and an analysis of the literature in three taxonomies,

which capture aspects of industrial-relevance regarding the regression

testing techniques. Based on these taxonomies, we mapped 38 papers reporting

the evaluation of 26 regression testing techniques in industrial settings.

A consolidated process for software process simulation: State of the Art and Industry Experience2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Software process simulation is a complex task and in order to conduct a simulation project practitioners require support through a process for software process simulation modelling (SPSM), including what steps to take and what guidelines to follow in each step. This paper provides a literature based consolidated process for SPSM where the steps and guidelines for each step are identified through a review of literature and are complemented by experience from using these recommendations in an action research at a large Telecommunication vendor. We found five simulation processes in SPSM literature, resulting in a seven-step process. The consolidated process was successfully applied at the studied company, with the experiences of doing so being reported.

FLOW-assisted value stream mapping in the early phases of large-scale software development2016In: Journal of Systems and Software, ISSN 0164-1212, E-ISSN 1873-1228, Vol. 111, p. 213-227Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Value stream mapping (VSM) has been successfully applied in the context of software process improvement. However, its current adaptations from Lean manufacturing focus mostly on the flow of artifacts and have taken no account of the essential information flows in software development. A solution specifically targeted toward information flow elicitation and modeling is FLOW. This paper aims to propose and evaluate the combination of VSM and FLOW to identify and alleviate information and communication related challenges in large-scale software development. Using case study research, FLOW-assisted VSM was used for a large product at Ericsson AB, Sweden. Both the process and the outcome of FLOW-assisted VSM have been evaluated from the practitioners’ perspective. It was noted that FLOW helped to systematically identify challenges and improvements related to information flow. Practitioners responded favorably to the use of VSM and FLOW, acknowledged the realistic nature and impact on the improvement on software quality, and found the overview of the entire process using the FLOW notation very useful. The combination of FLOW and VSM presented in this study was successful in systematically uncovering issues and characterizing their solutions, indicating their practical usefulness for waste removal with a focus on information flow related issues.

Testing highly complex system of systems: An industrial case study2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Systems of systems (SoS) are highly complex and are integrated on multiple levels (unit, component, system, system of systems). Many of the characteristics of SoS (such as operational and managerial independence, integration of system into system of systems, SoS comprised of complex systems) make their development and testing challenging. Contribution: This paper provides an understanding of SoS testing in large-scale industry settings with respect to challenges and how to address them. Method: The research method used is case study research. As data collection methods we used interviews, documentation, and fault slippage data. Results: We identified challenges related to SoS with respect to fault slippage, test turn-around time, and test maintainability. We also classified the testing challenges to general testing challenges, challenges amplified by SoS, and challenges that are SoS specific. Interestingly, the interviewees agreed on the challenges, even though we sampled them with diversity in mind, which meant that the number of interviews conducted was sufficient to answer our research questions. We also identified solution proposals to the challenges that were categorized under four classes of developer quality assurance, function test, testing in all levels, and requirements engineering and communication. Conclusion: We conclude that although over half of the challenges we identified can be categorized as general testing challenges still SoS systems have their unique and amplified challenges stemming from SoS characteristics. Furthermore, it was found that interviews and fault slippage data indicated that different areas in the software process should be improved, which indicates that using only one of these methods would have led to an incomplete picture of the challenges in the case company.

A critical appraisal tool for systematic literature reviews in software engineering2019In: Information and Software Technology, ISSN 0950-5849, E-ISSN 1873-6025, Vol. 112, p. 48-50Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context: Methodological research on systematic literature reviews (SLRs)in Software Engineering (SE)has so far focused on developing and evaluating guidelines for conducting systematic reviews. However, the support for quality assessment of completed SLRs has not received the same level of attention. Objective: To raise awareness of the need for a critical appraisal tool (CAT)for assessing the quality of SLRs in SE. To initiate a community-based effort towards the development of such a tool. Method: We reviewed the literature on the quality assessment of SLRs to identify the frequently used CATs in SE and other fields. Results: We identified that the CATs currently used is SE were borrowed from medicine, but have not kept pace with substantial advancements in the field of medicine. Conclusion: In this paper, we have argued the need for a CAT for quality appraisal of SLRs in SE. We have also identified a tool that has the potential for application in SE. Furthermore, we have presented our approach for adapting this state-of-the-art CAT for assessing SLRs in SE. © 2019 The Authors

Reliability of search in systematic reviews: Towards a quality assessment framework for the automated-search strategy2018In: Information and Software Technology, ISSN 0950-5849, E-ISSN 1873-6025, ISSN 0950-5849, Vol. 99, p. 133-147Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context: The trust in systematic literature reviews (SLRs) to provide credible recommendations is critical for establishing evidence-based software engineering (EBSE) practice. The reliability of SLR as a method is not a given and largely depends on the rigor of the attempt to identify, appraise and aggregate evidence. Previous research, by comparing SLRs on the same topic, has identified search as one of the reasons for discrepancies in the included primary studies. This affects the reliability of an SLR, as the papers identified and included in it are likely to influence its conclusions. Objective: We aim to propose a comprehensive evaluation checklist to assess the reliability of an automated-search strategy used in an SLR. Method: Using a literature review, we identified guidelines for designing and reporting automated-search as a primary search strategy. Using the aggregated design, reporting and evaluation guidelines, we formulated a comprehensive evaluation checklist. The value of this checklist was demonstrated by assessing the reliability of search in 27 recent SLRs. Results: Using the proposed evaluation checklist, several additional issues (not captured by the current evaluation checklist) related to the reliability of search in recent SLRs were identified. These issues severely limit the coverage of literature by the search and also the possibility to replicate it. Conclusion: Instead of solely relying on expensive replications to assess the reliability of SLRs, this work provides means to objectively assess the likely reliability of a search-strategy used in an SLR. It highlights the often-assumed aspect of repeatability of search when using automated-search. Furthermore, by explicitly considering repeatability and consistency as sub-characteristics of a reliable search, it provides a more comprehensive evaluation checklist than the ones currently used in EBSE. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Evaluating strategies for study selection in systematic literature studies2014In: ESEM '14 Proceedings of the 8th ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement, ACM , 2014, Vol. article 45Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context: The study selection process is critical to improve the reliability of secondary studies. Goal: To evaluate the selection strategies commonly employed in secondary studies in software engineering. Method: Building on these strate- gies, a study selection process was formulated and evalu- ated in a systematic review. Results: The selection process used a more inclusive strategy than the one typically used in secondary studies, which led to additional relevant articles. Conclusions: The results indicates that a good-enough sam- ple could be obtained by following a less inclusive but more efficient strategy, if the articles identified as relevant for the study are a representative sample of the population, and there is a homogeneity of results and quality of the articles.

Performance Analysis of AODV, DSR and OLSR in MANET2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) consists of mobile wireless nodes. The communication between these mobile nodes is carried out without any centralized control. MANET is a self organized and self configurable network where the mobile nodes move arbitrarily. The mobile nodes can receive and forward packets as a router. Routing is a critical issue in MANET and hence the focus of this thesis along with the performance analysis of routing protocols. We compared three routing protocols i.e. AODV, DSR and OLSR. Our simulation tool will be OPNET modeler. The performance of these routing protocols is analyzed by three metrics: delay, network load and throughput. All the three routing protocols are explained in a deep way with metrics. The comparison analysis will be carrying out about these protocols and in the last the conclusion will be presented, that which routing protocol is the best one for mobile ad hoc networks.

Response Time Effects on Quality of Security Experience2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The recent decade has witnessed an enormous development in internet technology worldwide. Initially internet was designed for applications such as Electronic Mail and File Transfer. With technology evolving and becoming popular, people use internet for e-banking, e-shopping, social networking, e-gaming, voice and a lot of other applications. Most of the internet traffic is generated by activities of end users, when they request a specific webpage or web based application. The high demand for internet applications has driven service operators to provide reliable services to the end user and user satisfaction has now become a major challenge. Quality of Service is a measure of the performance of a particular service. Quality of Experience is a subjective measure of user’s perception of the overall performance of network. The high demand for internet usage in everyday life has got people concerned about security of information over web pages that require authentication. User perceived Quality of Security Experience depends on Quality of Experience and Response Time for web page authentication. Different factors such as jitter, packet loss, delay, network speed, supply chains and the type of security algorithm play a vital role in the response time for authentication. In this work we have tried to do qualitative and quantitative analysis of user perceived security and Quality of Experience with increasing and decreasing Response Times towards a web page authentication. We have tried to derive a relationship between Quality of Experience of security and Response Time.

Case Study Of Mobile Internet User Experience2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mobile Internet is currently considered as the future for the Internet. Apparently the number of mobile handset sold as compared to desktop PCs is noticeable. These hints depict the potential of mobile Internet and the future market strongly relying on mobile devices. But at the same time mobile internet users are growing slower in numbers. Particularly in market where the internet access is very simple through computers, mobile internet users seems not very enthusiastic to use internet on mobile phones. Author of this study supposed on the basis of literature findings that this lack of interest is due to an unsatisfactory mobile internet user experience. This thesis work is an effort into the complex area of mobile internet and shed some light on how to improve user experience for mobile internet. The main focus of this research work is the identification of hurdles/challenges for mobile internet user experience and explores the concepts present in academia. In order to understand it properly, the author performed a systematic literature review (SLR). The overall objective of SLR is to examine the existing work on thesis study topic. This in depth study of literature revealed that mobile internet user experience is categorized into aspects, elements and factors by different researchers and considered as a central part of mobile internet user experience. There are few other factors that affect and make this job complicated and difficult such as usage context and user expectations. In this work current problems of the mobile internet user experience are identified systematically that never happened before and then discussed in a way that provide a better understanding of mobile internet user experience to academia. To fulfill the aim and objectives author of this study conducted the detailed systematic review analysis of the empirical studies from year 1998 to 2012. The research studies were identified from the most authentic databases that are scientifically and technically peer reviewed such as Scopus, Evillage, IEEE Xplore, ACM digital library. From SLR results, we have found different aspects, elements, factors and challenges of mobile internet user experience. The most common challenge faced by user and reported in academia was screen size, input facilities, usability of services, and data traffic costs. The information attained during this thesis study through academia (literature) is presented in a descriptive way which reflects that there is an emerging trend of using internet on mobile devices. Through this study author presented the influencing perspective of mobile internet user experience that needs to be considered for the advancement of mobile internet. The presented work adds contribution in a sense as to the best of knowledge no systematic review effort has been done in this area.

The role of Machine Learning in Predicting CABG Surgery Duration2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context. Operating room (OR) is one of the most expensive resources of a hospital. Its mismanagement is associated with high costs and revenues. There are various factors which may cause OR mismanagement, one of them is wrong estimation of surgery duration. The surgeons underestimate or overestimate surgery duration which causes underutilization or overutilization of OR and medical staff. Resolving the issue of wrong estimate can result improvement of the overall OR planning. Objectives. In this study we investigate two different techniques of feature selection, compare different regression based modeling techniques for surgery duration prediction. One of these techniques (with lowest mean absolute) is used for building a model. We further propose a framework for implementation of this model in the real world setup. Results. In our case the selected technique (correlation based feature selection with best first search in backward direction) for feature selection could not produce better results than the expert’s opinion based approach for feature selection. Linear regression outperformed on both the data sets. Comparatively the mean absolute error of linear regression on experts’ opinion based data set was the lowest. Conclusions. We have concluded that patterns exist for the relationship of the resultant prediction (surgery duration) and other important features related to patient characteristics. Thus, machine learning tools can be used for predicting surgery duration. We have also concluded that the proposed framework may be used as a decision support tool for facilitation in surgery duration prediction which can improve the planning of ORs and their resources.

När orden inte räcker till - Hälso- och sjukvårdspersonalens andra sätt att få personer med demens att öka sin kommunikation2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Wireless Mesh Networks: a comparative study of Ad-Hoc routing protocols toward more efficient routing2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Each day, the dream of seamless networking and connectivity everywhere is getting closer to become a reality. In this regard, mobile Ad-Hoc networks (MANETs) have been a hot topic in the last decade; but the amount of MANET usage nowadays confines to a tiny percentage of all our network connectivity in our everyday life, which connectivity through infrastructured networks has the major share. On the other hand, we know that future of networking belongs to Ad-Hocing , so for now we try to give our everyday infrastructure network a taste of Ad-Hocing ability; these types of networks are called Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) and routing features play a vital role in their functionality. In this thesis we examine the functionality of 3 Ad-Hoc routing protocols known as AODV, OLSR and GRP using simulation method in OPNET17.5. For this goal we set up 4 different scenarios to examine the performance of these routing protocols; these scenarios vary from each other in amount of nodes, background traffic and mobility of the nodes. Performance measurements of these protocols are done by network throughput, end-end delay of the transmitted packets and packet loss ratio as our performance metrics. After the simulation run and gathering the results we study them in a comparative view, first based on each scenario and then based on each protocol. For conclusion, as former studies suggest AODV, OLSR and DRP are among the best routing protocols for WMNs, so in this research we don’t introduce the best RP based on the obtained functionality results, instead we discuss the network conditions that each of these protocols show their best functionality in them and suggest the best routing mechanism for different networks based on the analysis from the former part.

I väntan på att någon ska dö: Personers upplevelser av att vänta på en levertransplantation2012Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Engaging Urban Communities of Newcomers to Sweden towards UNFCCC Climate Change Targets through Participation and Diversity2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Human-influenced climate change is rapidly accelerating and continues to threaten to human existence. Global migration is leading to increasingly multicultural urban populations. This paper ties these two issues together through the lense of engagement. The thesis argues that a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) can be used to plan strategies to engage multicultural communities towards second commitment Kyoto targets and be an opportunity for meeting community needs for social sustainability. The research took place in Sweden through interviews and focus groups. Key findings address systematic exclusion and the potential of inquiry to discover barriers and leverage points. The resulting set of guidelines for municipalities utilizes the full spectrum of engagement (inform, consult, involve, collaborate, empower) and the FSSD to enhance existing climate change action plans towards maximum participation for fulfilling Kyoto Protocol mandates.

Effekten av könshomogen idrottsundervisning för flickor i årskurs 52007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

An Introduction and Evaluation of a Lossless Fuzzy Binary AND/OR Compressor2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

We report a new lossless data compression algorithm (LDC) for implementing predictably-fixed compression values. The fuzzy binary and-or algorithm (FBAR), primarily aims to introduce a new model for regular and superdense coding in classical and quantum information theory. Classical coding on x86 machines would not suffice techniques for maximum LDCs generating fixed values of Cr >= 2:1. However, the current model is evaluated to serve multidimensional LDCs with fixed value generations, contrasting the popular methods used in probabilistic LDCs, such as Shannon entropy. The currently introduced entropy is of ‘fuzzy binary’ in a 4D hypercube bit flag model, with a product value of at least 50% compression. We have implemented the compression and simulated the decompression phase for lossless versions of FBAR logic. We further compared our algorithm with the results obtained by other compressors. Our statistical test shows that, the presented algorithm mutably and significantly competes with other LDC algorithms on both, temporal and spatial factors of compression. The current algorithm is a steppingstone to quantum information models solving complex negative entropies, giving double-efficient LDCs > 87.5% space savings.
