The predictive validity of the team diagnostic survey: Testing a model with performance and satisfaction as output variables2015Inngår i: Team Performance Management, ISSN 1352-7592, E-ISSN 1758-6860, Vol. 21, nr 5-6, s. 293-306Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The aims of the present study were to test the predictive validity of the Swedish version of the Team Diagnostic Survey (TDS). Design/methodology/approach – A model with both performance and satisfaction was tested with structural equation model (SEM) analyses. Participants completing the survey were employees (N, 214) across three large workplaces. Analyses were done at the group level and data from 33 teams were included in the final data material. Findings – Results from validation data indicate that the TDS has satisfactory high Cronbach’s alpha values on most factors. Results from the SEM analyses show a moderate model fit for the main model. Team-level factors predict both performance and satisfaction, while organization and coaching factors do not. Research limitations/implications – The present study was limited to a cross-sectional design, but earlier studies have shown that the accuracy of the TDS remains consistent over time. The main purpose of this study was to test the predictive validity of the instrument. Theoretical implications of the study are that a survey can be used to get a valid overall picture of the real-life work team’s effectiveness. Practical implications – Practical implications of the study are that communication between researcher and/or consultant and organizational stakeholders is made easier, as the most important factors that affect team effectiveness are identified. Originality/value – The work on the development on TDS has shown that it is possible to use a complex instrument to diagnose work groups, and this line of research is leading the way for better instruments. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Validation of the Team Diagnostic Survey and a Field Experiment to Examine the Effects of an Intervention to Increase Team Effectiveness2013Inngår i: Group facilitation: A research and practice journal, ISSN 1534-5653, Vol. 12, s. 53-70Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aims of the study presented in this article were to validate the Swedish version of the Team Diagnostic Survey (TDS), and to examine effects of a feedback intervention to increase team effectiveness. The TDS is based on Hackman 's (2002) theory of group effectiveness which described three main criteria of performance and 14 factors that should affect team effectiveness. Participants in the survey were employees (N=533) across several different workplaces. Analyses were done at the group level, and data from 97 teams was included in the final data material. The sample (n=237) for the randomized field experiment consisted of 31 real life work teams from the larger survey sample (n=533/97). Results from validation data indicate that the TDS has satisfactory high Cronbach's Alpha values on most factors. Cronbachs's Alpha is a statistical measure of internal consistency; that is, how closely related a set of items are as a group. Results from the field experiment indicated that there was an overall increase in self-reported team effecti veness from first to second measurement. On several factors of team effectiveness a number were significantly higher for those receiving the TDS-based feedback. The outcomes suggest that group work practice might benefit from using research-oriented surveys such as the Team Diagnostic Survey as an effective feedback tool.

    Abstract [en]

Today’s dynamic world and globalization brought constant changes for organizations to perform their activities. These continued needs for individual and organizational development can be traced to numerous demands, competitiveness, increased productivity and employees’ development. The first thing that comes in the minds of the management is productivity. That’s why management of any firm is so focused to improving their employees’ productivity. Training is one of the most pervasive methods for enhancing the productivity of individuals and communicating organizational goals to new personnel.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this book is to contribute to the development of a dialogue between ongoing research and established practice in the area of e-administration. Just as established practice consists of many different established pratices within the public sector , researchers who are interested and involved in the area of e-administration also represents a number of different perspectives and academic disciplines. This chapter is about development of e-participation as a part of e-government. The chapter discusses how active citizenship is co-constructed and shaped. Questions about how active citizenship is matched by "active politicianship" and active civil servant-ship are raised besides questions about what it means to become an active citize. Is it for example possible to become active by being deliberatively inactive in certain administrative processes? The discussion is based on combined development work and research in several projects within public sector.

Väcka intresse genom överraskningar2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Persistence of profits in the EU: How competitive are EU member countries?2018Inngår i: Empirica, ISSN 0340-8744, E-ISSN 1573-6911, ISSN 0340-8744, Vol. 46, nr 2, s. 327-351Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Profits that persist above or below the norm for prolonged periods of time reveal a lack of competition and imply a systematic misallocation of resources. Competition, if unimpeded, should restore profits to normal levels within a relatively short time frame. The dynamics of profits can thus reveal a great deal about the competitiveness of an economy. This paper estimates the persistence of profits across the European Union (EU), which adds to our understanding of the competitiveness of 18 EU member states. By using a sample of approximately 4700 firms with 51,000 observations across the time period of 1995–2013, we find differences in the persistence of short-run profits, implying that there are differences in competitiveness across the EU. The Czech Republic and Greece are among the countries with the highest profit persistence, whereas the United Kingdom is among those with the lowest persistence of profits. Furthermore, we provide evidence that there are significant permanent rents present in the EU across countries as well as in the different broad sectors across the EU. © 2018 The Author(s)

Product regulations and persistence of profits: OECD evidence2018Inngår i: Journal of Regulatory Economics, ISSN 0922-680X, E-ISSN 1573-0468, Vol. 54, nr 2, s. 147-164Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In competitive markets, profits deviating from the norm will not persist for extended periods. If unimpeded, entry and exit of firms should restore profits to competitive levels. This dynamic process is influenced by regulations that temporarily or permanently impede competition. We study how product market regulations (PMR)—as measured by the OECD—affect competition by their impact on the profit persistence (Wölfl et al. in Ten years of product market reform in OECD countries-insights from a revised PMR indicator, 2009, Product market regulation: extending the analysis beyond OECD countries, 2010). To examine profit dynamics, we follow the methodology developed by Mueller (Economica 44(176):369–380, 1977), which measures both the short run persistence of profits and the long run permanent rents. The method can be used to measure: (1) short run transitory rents; (2) long run permanent rents. To this end we use firm level data from 30 OECD countries over the period 1998–2013. Results show that PMR increase the permanent rents of firms but we find no significant effect on short run profit persistence. We conclude that PMR negatively influence competition and increase permanent rents, resulting in misallocation of resources. © 2018, The Author(s).

Entrepreneurship and failure: two sides of the same coin?2018Inngår i: Small Business Economics, ISSN 0921-898X, E-ISSN 1573-0913, s. 1-10Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper attempts to shed light on the nexus of relationships existing between failure, bankruptcy, institutional context, and local characteristics on one hand and entrepreneurship, firm survival, and performance on the other. The aim is to provide a larger vantage point from which to read the research included in this issue with the overall ambition to contribute to a better understanding of our entrepreneurial societies and the role of failure within markets. In this respect, the focus here is mainly on the institutions governing the bankruptcy procedures which do much more than simply regulating the exit of insolvent firms and protecting creditors’ investments, minimizing the social cost of failures. They set up the revolving doors through which creditors can reinvest the recovered capital in new entrepreneurial projects and failed entrepreneurs can bring back to the market their skills and their entrepreneurial spirit for fostering new and hopefully successful ventures. Therefore, by managing bankruptcy, the institutions are not only protecting the economy. Instead, they have become a tool of economic policy, devoted to the delicate issue of regulating a physiological event to the market while avoiding too much waste of resources. In a more positive perspective, managing insolvency and failure is also a mean to strengthen competitiveness and growth, making it possible to stimulate the market in reshuffling skills and resources into new activities. A deeper understanding can in turn contribute to the implementation of better and more efficient policies by integrating bankruptcy as a natural component of firm and market life. © 2018 The Author(s)

Pizzerias but not hairdressers: Market characteristics and customer reward programs2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Firms commonly offer purchase incentives to customers to make them purchase repeatedly. One such strategy is to offer customer reward programs. Customer reward programs are one of the most widely studied areas within marketing and one of the most widely implemented marketing initiatives by practitioners. In this thesis I will focus on simple, non-data collecting customer reward programs, an example of such a customer reward program is used in pizzerias in Sweden, a stamp card that rewards the customer with a free meal after a specified number of repeated purchases. Previous research has indicated that the profit of customer reward programs is inconclusive for businesses. Despite that, reports indicate that customer reward programs are becoming more and more common. This indicates that this part of marketing, customer reward programs, needs to be further examined. The phenomenon observed was that this type of non-data collecting customer reward programs were commonly offered by pizzerias but not by hairdressers. The gathering of empiric data was done through qualitative interviews with respondents for the industries mentioned above. The analysis consists of my gathered empirical data in relation to chosen theories. Based on this material and my hypothesis the conclusions were drawn.

    Abstract [sv]

Resultatet påvisade brister i dagens marknadsföringsteorier.

Fuzzy Decision Making in Business Intelligence2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate and implement fuzzy decision algorithms based on unequal objectives and minimization of regret to retrieve an optimal decision in business intelligence. Another aim was to compare these two models; those have been applied in business intelligence area. The use of unequal objectives and minimization of regret methods based on the essential concept of the fuzzy decision were applied on the business intelligence model. The first method uses Saaty’s approach of comparison objectives to determine the weight of the objectives, while the second method uses the regression of objectives which acts as a filter for high values by divesting them of their decisive power. In a complex business problem, we have used knowledge of experts in verbal expressions, converted these verbal expressions into linguistic variables and then used fuzzy decision making models to retrieve best decision. The implementation’s results of the two methods were the same regarding to the final decision set. The first model results indicated the effect of the influential factors on the products, while the second model results showed the payoff for the influential factors and its effectives on the products.

Key Factors for Creating an Innovative Context – a Study of the Development of the BMW i32014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Innovation has been identified as essential for organisations to stay competitive in existing or entirely new markets, as well as a necessity for long term survival. The ability to innovate is affected by the external environment in the industry and by the internal environment within the organisation. We focused on internal parameters that influenced an innovative development project in the automobile industry. An organisation may shape its internal environment by reducing hurdles as well as strengthening key factors that foster innovations. We combined factors identified by a literature review to build our theoretical framework consisting of seven internal organisational parameters that may form an innovative context. These are: top management support, advocates for intrapreneurship (entrepreneurship within existing organisations), the physical environment, organisational structure, resources, rewards and risk taking. The purpose of this paper was to identify these internal organisational factors and their importance in creating an innovative context in the BMW i3 development project. Our data collection consisted of ten interviews of management and employees involved in the BMW i3 project in which the key factors were addressed. The participants also had the opportunity to rank the importance of the identified internal organisational factors. Our findings showed that all factors have some importance in creating an innovative context. We find that top management support and advocates for intrapreneurship were the most important factors, followed by risk taking. The importance of the factors showed differences as well as similarities between the literature and our case. Management support, being an inherently wide term and most often including both top management support, advocates and other elements, was found to be of high importance in similar studies as well. A discrepancy was found regarding rewards, which was found to be important in similar studies but was ranked as least important in our case. This study contributes to the knowledge about organisational factors that should be considered by firms that strive to create an innovative context. The lessons gleamed from this study can be useful in typical innovative projects in the automotive industry and other technology industries.

    Abstract [sv]

Leadership of Introverts: An exploratory study of how introvert managers lead in Sweden2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of the present study was to shed light on the relatively unknown field of introvert leadership and to identify how introverted leaders use their innate personality to become effective and successful leaders. Design/methodology/approach – Survey methodology was used to assess the occurrence of introvert leaders in a company. Also, six introvert managers working in knowledge-intensive companies were interviewed and asked about how they use introvert traits in their leadership. Findings – The study results show that introvert leaders do exist. Furthermore, the results from the study indicate that the traits the introverted leader embrace the most are engaged listening, taking quiet time, having focused and deep conversations and a methodical and structured way of working. These traits were used in an informing, consulting and supporting way in order to engage subordinates, solve conflicts, making decision and influencing others as well as in strategic planning. The findings suggest that introvert leadership can be connected to a participative or leadership-member exchange leadership style. Research implications – The research findings contribute to the understanding of introvert leadership and how introvert traits are used in engaging and empowering subordinates, conflict handling, decision-making and influencing others. Practical implication – The findings in this study have shown that introvert traits can be as powerful as extrovert traits in leadership and hence the common perception that a leader needs to possess extroverted traits as well as charisma in order to be successful needs to be revisited.

The Impact of Monetary Policy on Stock Market Returns in Developing Markets, A Comparative Investigation of Nigeria and Ghana Stock Markets (1990: 2010)2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The global economic meltdown which affected the stock markets all over the world also had an adverse effect on less developing countries stock markets. As a result of the meltdown, investors lost confidence in the stock market. Monetary authorities in both Nigeria and Ghana had tried in several ways to restore investor confidence and hence one of the major tools that government uses to achieve macroeconomic objective is monetary policy. There became a need to investigate how monetary policy changes affect stock market returns in the Nigerian and Ghanaian stock exchange markets. This paper is based on comparative study of Nigerian and Ghanaian stock markets in other to ascertain how monetary policy targets namely interest rate and money supply (m2) affect stock market returns. We conducted a simple regression analysis test based on annual 20 year data (1990-2010). The result shows that monetary policy has more impact on stock market returns in the Ghanaian economy than the Nigerian economy, and as such could act as a market signal for investors in the Ghanaian stock exchange market. While the Nigerian stock exchange market is insensitive to change in monetary policy as such, a change in monetary policy would not act as a market signal for investors in the Nigerian stock exchange market.

The Role Of Service Quality In Shaping Consumer Behaviour And It's Impact On Customer Base On Businesses2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate the effect of service quality in shaping consumer behavior and the impact on the customer base of businesses from the perspective of retail banking customers in the United Kingdom. The study draws on customer behavior and attitude premised on the SERVQUAL and SERVPERF models originated by Parasuraman et al., (1988), Cronin and Taylor (1992), and Brady and Cronin (2001) respectively as well as other researches based on the literature on customer satisfaction and loyalty. We used both quantitative and qualitative research approaches in our study and relied mainly on primary data. We made use of a 7 point likert scale to develop indexes for the main constructs measured in this study and applied correlation analysis to evaluate the hypothesized relationships. Further we qualitatively analysed aspects of the data hinging on explanatory aspects of our research. The results among other things revealed that whilst service quality (especially responsiveness and empathy) and bank image and reputation are important instigators of customer satisfaction and loyalty, competitive pricing showed a weak linear relationship with customer satisfaction and loyalty (r˂5). Finally we discussed the management implications of the study in terms of customer retention and profitability strategies for the banks in the UK

Potential Success Indicators in Early Stages of Energy Liberalization Processes: The Mexican Energy Reform Case.2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Energy Industry liberalization processes have brought different results around the world depending on the context of the country or region where they take place. The Mexican energy reform opened the market for private companies to participate in the electricity generation. Currently, this reform has been in place for almost four years.

Several approaches have been used to measure the success of the electric market liberalization in different regions. Different authors have used indicators such as the grassroots initiatives or the reduction of subsidies; still, its applicability is limited to mature stages of the liberalization process.

The Mexican energy reform opens the opportunity to study the liberalization process in its early stages. The present study considers by the approach presented by Tulloch, Diaz-Rainey & Premachandra (2017) proposing four restructuring streams, to overcome to difficulty off evaluating the early results of the reform in an industry still evolving actual company details are studies to assess the success or failure of the liberalization of the Mexican energy sector.

This paper will follow a single case study structure based on the whole Mexican Energy Market and focused on the Electric Market. The case study addresses the following research question: “How implementation indicators reflect the potential success of an energy liberalization processes? This research question aims to find out potential early indicators which can be deemed as determining the success or failure of the energy market liberalization process. By using the Mexican case, we aim to contrast the existing research and experiences in other countries to further understand the dynamics of energy liberalization processes.

The energy market in Mexico has experienced growing competition from players in the energy sectors and forms of energy exploited both producing positive effects on the utility companies’ profitability. The market has also seen an increasing share in renewables, increased power generation and an increasingly greater focus on innovation in the energy sector. The results point to the complexity of the energy market and the role that specific market characteristics play in the success or failure of the regularization process.

Considering the empiric results, we identify early success indicators such as the introduction of new competitors and the boost of renewable energy, pointing towards a successful energy liberalization process in Mexico.

Three early indicators are proposed to be used to identify a successful energy liberalization process: i) the introduction of new competitors, ii) reforms on subsidies and iii) the growth of renewables. The co-existence of all of these indicators during the implementation of an energy liberalization process suggests that it was performed successfully, at least at its early phase.

The Mexican experience gives us first-hand experience in the early phases of an energy liberalization process. It is clear according to the empirical results that without the successful implementation of the energy reform, the Mexican market would not be able to incorporate such technologies at the current pace.

Further research is required to confirm the current findings in later stages and through different industries. Considering that the market conditions are continually evolving and that the current conditions might be undeveloped, the profit levels of these company might suffer drastic changes during the following years. Other aspects such as the subsidy levels and the electricity price performance represent additional research paths.

Internationalisation of the Swedish higher education system: An impact analysis on student and employee satisfaction2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Internationalisation is a global phenomenon that is changing the way in which educational systems need to look at their education delivery in order to be competitive and meet the needs of the global economy. The Swedish education system currently has a competitive advantage because it is free from tuition fees. However, what is of particular interest in this research is the impact that the proposed introduction of fees to non EU students will have on the Swedish educational system ability to continue to attract non EU students. The number of international students choosing to study in Sweden is increasing by 14% each year. Part of the reason behind this is that Swedish higher education systems have an overcapacity for students in addition to a decline in the number of Swedish students’ choosing to study. The intention of this thesis is to address the following questions; How can Swedish higher education institutions meet the needs of its culturally diverse student base? What are the implications of this on the employees at the institutions? And What are the institutional measures that can be introduced to meet the needs of the culturally diverse student base and its employees? To answer these questions an exploratory case study approach was taken with the intention being to maximise the variation and capture the true essence of the internationalisation situation in the Swedish higher education system. The case study area chosen was the BTH School of Management. Primary data was collected via Student programme evaluations, focus groups and field notes. Secondary data consisted of International and national education documents, EU documents and policies, Geert Hofstede and other relevant cultural and Educational documents. The research identified that there was a link between addressing student’s needs and an institution’s attractiveness. Therefore, in addressing the needs of the international students their cultural needs and expectations must be considered. Some recommendations on what could be done to meet the cultural needs of the students have been derived from the research conducted in this thesis. These recommendations are also well utilised in other industries and other educational systems.

Customer Satisfaction in the Mobile Telecommunications Industry In Nigeria2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Customer satisfaction is a fundamental marketing construct in the last three decades. In the past, it was unpopular and unaccepted concept because companies thought it was more important to gain new customers than retain the existing ones. However, in this present decade, companies have gained better understanding of the importance of customer satisfaction (especially service producing companies) and adopted it as a high priority operational goal. This study aimed at investigation the overall customer satisfaction of the mobile telecoms industry in Nigeria, factors influencing satisfaction and the relationship between satisfaction and demographics. The results obtained in this research indicated that 57% of the respondents were satisfied and 5% highly satisfied. The combination of network quality, billing, validity period and customer support (mobile services attributes) showed strong relationship with satisfaction while age, gender, location and employment variables showed weak relationship.

A STUDY OF CAPITAL STRUCTURE IN EXTREMELY DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Capital structure is a term in financial economics that delineates the proportion that the various claimants have to the assets of the company. It often describes the debt and stock ratio in the right hand side of a company’s balance sheet. Franco Modigliani and Merton Miller first propounded a theory in which they explained that, a firm‟s capital structure does not influence its value, only its underlying assets do. In 1963, after adjusting their initial assumptions to include corporate taxes, they propounded another theory which explained that in a world with corporate taxes, and where interest is tax deductible, an issue of debt adds value to the firm. In later years, other theories were developed which supported the view that capital structure influences the value of the firm. I have tried to support this view, while making a contribusion that a flexibilty in a firm‟s financial structure can be very meanful. Since cash helps in a firm‟s flexibility, having significant cash reserve can potentially make a difference to the firm. While studying firms in the developed world - case study Sweden, and firms in the developing world, case study - Cameroon, I found that though firms understand that the choices they make in financing their assets can create or destroy value, they all are united by one basic instinct - the instinct to survive. During crisis, firms in these countries, tend to choose debt over the other financing options apparently because the other sources of finance might be difficult to attain at such operose times. While I understand that the need to survive is the most basic need for all firms to consider, I suggest that, the flexibility argument should be a very important factor for all firms to consider in the dynamic and competitive environments of today. A firm should manage its capital structure such that, it can choose to take an action from different alternatives rather than have - 2 - circumstances compel it to take action. Reaction to events should come from within the firm based on its evaluation of its structure and its resources rather than from outside parameters restricting it to conform to circumstances in a manner that is unrealistic to a realistic aggrandisement of the firm. It is with this spirit that I demonstrated the value of the cash option.

Fair-Trade Purchasing: An analysis of consumer purchasing attitudes and the challenges of fair-trade products in the UK2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Consumer perception and purchase of fair trade products have been a topic of intrigue for researchers for a long time, because of the complexities involved in accurately measuring why and how consumers go for ethical goods. Previous research has attributed the fair trade concept to be of interest to only a small group of usually ethically minded consumers, and recently to more highly educated high income women. These issues and others relating to fair trade have been investigated in this research with some interesting findings. The research tried to find the perceptions of ethical and non ethical consumers to the fair trade concept, looking at their understanding of the whole concept and what makes them buy or not buy fair trade products and what improvements could be done about it. To get these perceptions, data was collected through questionnaires from these groups and analysed using the statistical tool SPSS. The studied showed a marked improvement from the general public, especially from men to their awareness of the fair trade concept and their willingness to purchase more fair trade products, provided there was complete understanding of the concept and a guarantee that the fair trade principles are met. It was recommended that increase education, transparency and a concerted effort to involve mainstream retailers in the process was a good way forward in increasing the sale of fair trade in the UK. The general impression gathered was that of hope and expectation that if these conditions are met, fair trade purchasing will do better than it is doing now.

Network relationship characteristics between companies operating in the Republic of South Sudan2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on issues in interorganizational cooperation to explain network relationships and their effect on company performance in South Sudan. According to the South Sudan National Bureau of Statistics, by June 2010, registered companies in the country were 7,333. Prior to this study, there appeared to be no study done concerning the interorganizational networks in South Sudan. The study builds on the recent studies of relations, selection and motives on organizational performance. The researcher adapted and modified the framework of previous researchers. This study excludes the mediating variable of interorganizational commitment to test directly the constructs of loose and soft, and hard explicit motives; trust and reciprocity, and expected goal congruence and network awareness. The sample consisted of randomly drawn 184 companies in South Sudan. The data was collected in December 2012 using questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS to distil descriptive data and conduct factor analysis. The research objectives are to test the effects on performance of: initial motives; criteria of selecting a partner; influence of trust, and the influence of reciprocity. The research question is: What effect does social capital capitalized from partner goals; selection, and motive have on organizational performance? To achieve the specific objectives of the research, six (6) hypotheses were developed. The study findings are that loose and soft-, and hard partner motives, partner selection and reciprocity had an effect on organizational performance while trust did not. The implications of this study are that companies that are involved in interorganizational networking and seeking to perform need to invest resources of time and money in clarifying their motives; learn from partners; select partners; match mutual goals; keep a database of potential partners; practice reciprocation, and build relationships that rely more on control and legally enforceable contracts. This study has contributed to the response to the main problem of lack of researched studies in interorganizational cooperation with in South Sudan. The study has blazed the trail for further study on the topic of interorganizational cooperation in the country. The specific contribution of the study is that it has confirmed that five of the conceptualized constructs affect organizational performance and trust does not affect performance in the Republic of South Sudan. The study has contributed to obtaining evidence of how these outcomes occur within this setting.

IT-kompetens: utveckling av ett mätinstrument2001Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Problem: In society of today corporate competence is an important factor for survivor and development. IT is developing rapidly and can not be ignored by companies. Then need for people with IT-competence is conquent increasing. A survey of corporate IT-competence is therefore of interest for companies as well as for local authorities. To determine the IT competence within an organisation, this competence has to be measurable. Therefore, it is necessary to define the concept of IT competence. In agreement with our principal, we are focusing on the manufacturing industry. Purpose: To develop a measuring instrument which can be used to survey the IT competence within a manufacturing sector. Method: Our development of the measuring instrument is divided into four steps. In the first step, we have made a definition of IT competence, relevant literature and research. This definition is used in the second step, where we connect our discussion in a matrix in order to illustrate our reasoning regarding IT competence. In the third step, and based this discussion, we are outlining questions, which all together form the measuring instrument itself. In the last step, we deal with the obscurities and ideas for improvement that have arisen through the test investigation along with our own reflections about what could have been done better. Conclusion: We are using the ideas for improvement to change the measuring instrument. When all the changes have been made, the final measuring instrument has emerged, which means our assignment is completed. Based on our studies, we can establish that it is possible to measure the IT competence within an organisation, and thus, to survey the IT competence in a local authority.

Tillväxtens utmaningar: En studie om gasellföretag i Blekinge2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Buyer-supplier integration in project-based industries2013Inngår i: The journal of business & industrial marketing, ISSN 0885-8624, E-ISSN 2052-1189, Vol. 28, nr 1, s. 29-40Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of the study is to propose and test a buyer-supplier integration model, based on clients' collaborative purchasing practices, in a project-based industry. Design/methodology/approach – Hypotheses regarding the relationships among the three variables – i.e. incentive-based payment (IBP), partner selection (PS) based on multiple criteria, and joint action (JA) – are tested using structural equation modeling. Empirical data was collected through two survey rounds of 87 and 106 Swedish construction clients. Findings – The test of the proposed theoretical model receives strong empirical support, indicating that IBP should be coupled with PS based on multiple criteria in order to facilitate JA. Furthermore, it is seen that the occurrence of JA is higher in 2009 than in 2006 and that this is achieved through increased use of IBP. Research limitations/implications – The hypothesized and tested model provides a theoretical contribution, indicating how to facilitate buyer-supplier integration in project-based industries. In future studies it would be useful to adopt a multiple-informant approach, also including suppliers as respondents in order to capture their views on integration. Practical implications – An important managerial implication is that public clients need to improve their understanding of how to design bid proposals and evaluate bids based on multiple criteria instead of lowest price, without infringing public procurement acts. Originality/value – This paper offers unique contributions by addressing a gap in the relationship marketing literature and a lack of quantitative studies of buyer-supplier relationships in project-based industries.

Assessment of Leadership Aspects that Contribute to Operational Excellence: A case Study of two large Companies in Sweden2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Operational excellence has become a popular strategy within many large companies and it aims to raise the competitiveness by increasing the organizational efficiency in areas such as faster time-to-market, reduced costs, improved quality and reduced supply lead time, which can have a major positive impact on company profits. By understanding how leadership at each level in the company can have a positive impact on an organizations success when implementing an operational excellence strategy, the organization can take actions accordingly. This thesis studies and compares three different units from two large Swedish organizations in order to find leadership aspects that have an affect on leader’s ability to drive operational excellence in the organization. Two of the studied cases show a mix of transformational and transactional leadership while the third case only uses transformational leadership. The study shows that a transformational leadership style is more efficient for driving operational excellence. It is also clear that different leadership abilities are needed depending on the leaders’ position as well as the complexity of the organization. For senior leaders that need to act through other leaders it is more important to be assertive and self-confidence, while first level line managers need to have a higher level of emotional intelligence, warmth and authenticity due to their close relationship with the employees.

THE LOGICAL POSSIBILITY FOR A DIVERSE REVENUE SOURCE: The English Premier League Big Four and Their Foreign Fans2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Football otherwise known as soccer (in America) has become much more than just a game to those that follow the game. It has become so much as the way of life for these followers that it is arguably one of cult status because of its strong enduring appeal and elevation to worship by those who follow the game. The English Premier League EPL has made the game even more popular with an estimated half a billion followers from over 200 countries, thus been tagged "The Greatest Show on Earth". With a followership of such magnitude (and one with a potential of increase growth), there is need to look at if foreign football fans are the future and key to really bigger money for these club. The analysis result of the thesis will give to those concerned, a better perspective of the issues in questions, a future outlook and how plans can be affected to address them.

Rewards as a Motivation Tool for Employee Performance2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this research was to explore three vital issues in human resource management mainly: to ascertain whether rewards motivate employees, identify what kinds of rewards employees consider most beneficial and finally discuss some dilemmas and difficulties managers face in applying motivation theory to workplace setting. The research is informed by various literatures on the most effective and efficient ways of motivating employees to enhance high performance to and to achieve organizational goals. Most of the available literature on motivation shows that while motivated employees are essential for organizational goals, managers are often confronted with the challenge of coming up with the right mix of rewards which will motivate their employees for enhanced productivity. In this research, the perceptions of rewards as motivation and the dilemmas managers face in motivating their employees were explored through an analysis of twenty (20) interviews with people in various positions and organizations in the Accra and Tema municipalities of the Greater Accra region of Ghana. The respondents were all employees who also had oversight responsibilities as managers or supervisors of between five to ten people. The analysis of the twenty (20) interviews suggests that while the use of rewards is vital in motivating employees, there is the need for management and employers to have a clear understanding of the human nature and what actually motivates employees. The research further suggests that efficient motivation program stems from a mixture of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards instead of focusing on any one particular one. Additionally, most of the challenges managers face in motivating their employees can be eliminated or reduced when myths surrounding motivation are discarded and individual differences in terms of valence, preferences, and aspirations are incorporated. Finally, enhanced motivation can be attained when managers do their best to design the work setting so they become motivators in themselves while at the same time eliminate demotivating factors at the work place.

Algoritmisk handel: och dess fördelar för affärsbankerna2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

When is it favourable to outsource innovation2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Companies need to constantly innovate and improve in order to remain profitable and keep up with competition. But innovation can be costly and knowledge and new ideas hard to find. Therefore companies outsource innovation and do so increasingly even though it is difficult to successfully decide when and how. When should companies try to come up with new ideas themselves, and when should they give the job to outside experts? Does outsourcing of innovation work in established markets, new markets, for incremental or disruptive innovations, for product or process types of innovations? Research involving small companies and outsourcing of innovation has not been widely addressed in the literature, this thesis intend to give a better understanding of this area. After conducting a literature review we went looking for specific answers to the questions what effect does the business newness and size of a company have on the success of outsourcing and is there a difference in the outcome of outsourcing of innovation regarding the areas product, process, market and organization. A survey among decision makers and decision influencers showed: 1. Outsourcing of product and market innovation in new business compared to established business was considered equally successful. 2. Outsourcing of process and organisation innovation in new business was considered significantly less successful compared to established business. 3. The perceived benefit from outsourcing product innovation is higher than perceived benefit from outsourcing of processes, markets or organizations innovation. 4. Market leaders (including those who were runner up) believes that outsourcing of organization innovation in established business is more successful compared to none market leaders same goes for outsourcing of process innovation. This thesis tries to explain these and other findings concerning outsourcing of innovation.

Telecommunications Managed Services Model in sub-Saharan Africa – The Pros and Cons: The Case of Nigeria2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The Telecommunications sector in developing country like Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries are increasingly embracing the Managed Services Model, a kind of outsourcing, primarily due the need to cut operational cost, for rapid expansion, to gain market share and to focus on core competence. However, despite the benefits associated with this model and its successful adoption the world over by many telecommunications companies, many sub-Saharan African countries are showing a deviation from this trend. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the motivations in favor or against the adoption of Managed Services Model in sub-Saharan Africa with emphasis on Nigeria. Interview was used as the main tool to gather the required information from some Telecommunication operators and vendors in Nigeria and complemented by the use of a questionnaire survey. The outcome of the analysis of the data gathered indicate that the reason behind the adoption of managed services is cost reduction, access to skilled manpower, better focus on core business, quality improvements, and competitive advantage. The study also establishes that increasing unemployment rate, diminished local competence and expertise, and security concern are among the top reasons for the call against the adoption of Managed Services Model.

Svenska Guldkusten’s strategy to be sustainable is to stay invaluable to the customer, stay cheap and healthy. In maintaining a position in the consumers mind, innovative ways of spreading the organic food products message will be employed. For instance the catch phrase “Buy a chocolate bar and by life for yourself and a loved one” will be in harness. In carving out a market share for the business, Svenska Guldkusten intends to use cheaper and convenient ways to market the product and also stay health and wellness related.

The business’ idea is to make a product offer categorized both in branded terms and consumer terms. This will easily communicate information about the product to the grassroots of the target market. Keeping the customers will be through customer co-creation where customer suggestions are seen as important inputs to the product development. This will also create a consistently useful and valuable product for the customer. Strong branding (backed by history), the delivery of rich confection of organic cocoa and pricing will make the business prominent, sustainable and competitive because the source of the import (Ghana) is rich in premium cocoa beans and Sweden has the devotees of refined sumptuous food.

Coporate Social Responsibility: konkurrensfördel på arbetsmarknaden?2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The Emergence of Crowdsourcing and Open-Source Models in Drug Development2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Contemporary cases of crowdsourcing (CS) and open source development (OS) related to drug development have been selected and studied. Contemporary examples of CS/OS from within and outside of the pharmaceutical industries have been presented to give a background and suggest possible benefits and problems. The main criteria for selection have been that the case must seek to advance drug development and must use crowdsourcing or open source as a mechanism. The cases found in our search show a large diversity in terms of application, usage, and possible implications for the pharmaceutical industry. We found that crowdsourcing within a scientific problem context produced good results, but that open source initiatives were either poorly financed and not successful or focused on neglected diseases made possible through strong backing by non-profit organizations. An analysis of which the pharmaceutical companies where that showed activity on the platforms identified R&D-intensive and biotech companies as the most active. Contract research organizations (CROs) and generics manufacturers (GMs) showed almost complete absence. We argue that GMs are not likely to be interested in this kind of R&D, but CROs are an untapped resource. Finally we propose a hypothetical model that takes into account all the findings from our study and the literature. This model is based on a limited type of open source with a limited number of partners making use of the untapped CRO resource through crowdsourcing.

Chain Management for today’s demand – Case study Seven Eleven in Japan and Sweden2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the firm is to create value. To do so, a firm has to offer either a unique product/service or a price that is more attractive than its competitors so that customers will pay more than the cost of producing the product/service. It sounds easy to achieve but we all know it is not. In this thesis it should be clear to the reader how the management of the value chain impacts profitability. The company Seven Eleven Japan have considered demand processes in their chain management and are showing higher profitability than their competitors. Using demand processes and shifting the supply chain towards a customer oriented demand approach will have its rewards but it takes a strong alignment with suppliers and distributors for succeeding in a good way. The movement also put additional constraints and focus on the organisation of the company and its management. When a developed chain management is able to integrate the supply chain processes with the demand processes, it gives the company a possible competitive advantage for the future. This thesis has looked at the aspects of a supply chain moving into a more demand related chain management and examined the impact both on the organisational and technology systems in an efficient chain management process. Explaining some of the related conceptions, processes and terms as well as highlighting successful examples is also included in the work. The thesis is conducted by a secondary data investigation of chain management and business literature as well as first hand data on the two companies Seven Eleven Japan and Sweden. The aim of the thesis is to define how the chain management has moved from being a traditional supply chain management to be a more demand focused process as well as to exemplify if and how this has been conducted within two different Seven Eleven companies. A comparison of the two companies´ chain management processes will also be conducted.

Budgetens roll i finanskrisens fotspår – en studie av verkstadsföretag2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Design and implementation of QMS framework in power plant projects. Garri4 project as a model, Sudan2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, many companies around the world have adopted different forms of quality systems, such as ISO-based quality systems, or BS-based quality systems. It has been perceived that a quality-based company provides higher quality services and products in comparison with non quality-based companies. As a result, quality-based companies have become reputable and attract more customers. In projects construction field, quality has become very essential for both contractors and owners. Contractors tend to provide high quality deliverables to satisfy their clients, and to remain successful in this turbulent business field, while owners want to receive high quality end-products and services, and to ensure that their deliverables matching contractual quality requirements. Therefore owners (whether operating companies or government sectors) have developed different means to measure quality in their projects, such as hiring professional consultants who cooperate with owner’s project team. If owners have developed reliable quality management system (QMS) and their staffs are experienced and competent with relevant technical and project management knowledge, then the result will be outstanding. This study is aimed to design, implement, and examine a QMS in Garri4 power plant project, NEC, Sudan – which has already completed 60% of its activities on the time of QMS implementation. The outcomes of this implementation are intended to be used for future NEC projects. The outlines of the QMS have been prepared from the PMBOK guide, which has been published by PMI (Project Management Institute, USA) as a guide for project management knowledge and practices. In addition to that, the detailed QMS work frame has been designed on the guidance of relevant literature review and joint meetings with NEC project team. The required data before and after the QMS implementation gathered using questionnaires, and a Matrix model has been used to measure QMS objectives and requirements effectiveness based on the collected data. The final results indicate success on meeting QMS prescribed objectives, while meeting QMS requirements during QMS implementation failed. An extensive analysis based on real observations during QMS implementation and these results has been carried in order to determine driven factors. Finally, a conclusion and recommendations have been drawn.

Decision under uncertainty: Investment in a human resource2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Title: Decision under uncertainty - Investment in a human resource Authors: Emil Numminen & Fredrik Falkenback Thesis advisor: Anders Hederstierna Purpose: To determine how well models for decisions under uncertainty can describe an investment in a human resource. Method: A standardized structured expert interview with a decision maker of human resources investments was made. The empirical material from the inter-view is then compared against the main proper-ties of the two models. Conclusions: The traditional decision analysis can describe the process of investments made in human resources where absence of management exists and the in-vestment has limited time duration. The real op-tion analysis can describe the process of invest-ments made in human resources where process is characterized by sequential decisions made about the investment.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Kurs: Kandidatuppsats i företagsekonomi, 15 högskolepoäng.
