    Abstract [sv]

    Artificiella neurala nätverk (ANN) har många användningsområden inom datavetenskap. Några av dessa är mönsterigenkänning, robotik, processkontroll, optimering och spel. Detta examensarbete kommer att handla om hur en alternativ lösning på den traditionella arkitekturen av hur ett neuralnät kan se ut. Jag kommer att undersöka om man kan ta ett stort och komplext neuralnät och bryta ned detta till mindre neuralnät utan att förlora kvaliteten på botarna i en spelmiljö kallad Open Nero. Detta för att försöka minska beräkningshastigheten av neuralnäten och förhoppningsvis även göra så botarna lär sig ett bra beteende snabbare. Mitt examensarbete kommer att visa att min lösning av arkitekturen för ett neuralt nätverk inte fungerar speciellt bra då botarna inte lärde sig tillräckligt fort. En fördel med min arkitektur är dock att den är något snabbare än originalets i exekveringshastighet.

    A criteria-based evaluation framework for authentication schemes in IMS2009Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is regarded as one of the most prominent enablers for successful service provisioning across different access network technologies and devices. While new paradigms, e.g. seamless communication, enter the IMS, existing solutions, e.g. for authentication, need to be redefined, which is one of the major activities within the EUREKA!-funded Mobicome project, involving operators, manufacturers and academia. As there exist several candidate solutions for providing seamless authentication, there is a need for a set of criteria that helps to select the candidate that fulfils those criteria in a bestpossible way. Given this background, this position paper proposes a framework of criteria for the evaluation of authentication schemes in IMS. The primary criteria are security, user-friendliness and simplicity. Inbetween these criteria, the secondary criteria can be found. These are awareness, usability and algorithms. Each criterion, both primary and secondary, is then also divided into one or several substantiating sub-criteria. The discussion of the criteria is followed by a description of the evaluation methodology, which comprises both qualitative and quantitative evaluations such as SWOT analysis, use of NIST and ISO guidelines, user rankings, and measurements of authentication times. The paper is concluded with an outlook on future work, including studies and experiments.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – This paper aims to provide a solution for allowing an arbitrary number of weights and weight values to be used in an electronic voting system. Design/methodology/approach – Robust Electronic Voting System (REVS) was chosen, a voting system designed to support internet voting processes, as the start point for studying the introduction of vote weights. Findings – The work resulted in an internet voting system supporting vote weights, based on REVS. Research limitations/implications – In the solution presented, there is still a problem regarding anonymity, for the case of a single voter with a particular weighted vote. This is a fundamental problem, since it also exists in paper-based elections. Practical implications – This version of REVS has the same properties as the original REVS, apart from the anonymity issue above. Apart from this the process of registering voters got more complicated, since now it includes an extra action for binding a weight. Originality/value – To the best of the authors' knowledge, this modified version of REVS is the first electronic voting system supporting vote weights. Another novelty of this work is the modulus sharing optimization used for the RSA key pairs of each entity.

    Abstract [en]

    Transmit antenna selection with receive maximal-ratio combining (TAS/MRC) and transmit antenna selection with receive selection combining (TAS/SC) are two attractive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) protocols. In this paper, we present a framework for the comparative analysis of TAS/MRC and TAS/SC in a two-hop amplify-and-forward relay network. In doing so, we derive exact and asymptotic expressions for the symbol error rate (SER) in Nakagami-mfading. Using the asymptotic expressions, the SNR gap between the two protocols is quantified. Given that the two protocols maintain the same diversity order, we show that the SNR gap is entirely dependent on the array gain. Motivated by this, we derive the SNR gap as a simple ratio of the respective array gains of the two protocols. This ratio explicitly takes into account the impact of the number of antennas and the fading severity parameter m. In addition, we address the fundamental question of “How to allocate the total transmit power between the source and the relay in such a way that the SER is minimized?” Our answer is given in the form of new compact expressions for the power allocation factor, which is a practical design tool that optimally distributes the total transmit power in the network.

    Using Multicore Programming on the GPU to Improve Creation of Potential Fields2013Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    In the last decade video games have made great improvements in terms of arti cial intelligence and visuals. Researchers have also made advancements in the arti cial intelligence eld and some of the latest research papers have been exploring potential elds. This report will cover the background of potential eld and examine some improvements that can be made to increase the performance of the algorithm. The basic idea is to increase performance by making a GPGPU(General purpose graphic processing unit) solution for the creation of potential elds. Several GPGPU implementations are presented where focus has lied on optimizing memory access patterns to increase performance. The results of this thesis show that an optimized GPGPU implementation can give up to 18.5x speedup over a CPU implementation.

    Perceptual quality metrics are widely deployed in image and video processing systems. These metrics aim to emulate the integral mechanisms of the human visual system (HVS) to correlate well with visual perception of quality. One integral property of the HVS is, however, often neglected: visual attention (VA) [1]. The essential mechanisms associated with VA consist mainly of higher cognitive processing, deployed to reduce the complexity of scene analysis. For this purpose, a subset of the visual information is selected by shifting the focus of attention across the visual scene to the most relevant objects. By neglecting VA, perceptual quality models inherently assume that all objects draw the attention of the viewer to the same degree.

    Abstract [en]

    Fixation density maps (FDM) created from eye tracking experiments are widely used in image processing applications. The FDM are assumed to be reliable ground truths of human visual attention and as such, one expects a high similarity between FDM created in different laboratories. So far, no studies have analyzed the degree of similarity between FDM from independent laboratories and the related impact on the applications. In this paper, we perform a thorough comparison of FDM from three independently conducted eye tracking experiments. We focus on the effect of presentation time and image content and evaluate the impact of the FDM differences on three applications: visual saliency modeling, image quality assessment, and image retargeting. It is shown that the FDM are very similar and that their impact on the applications is low. The individual experiment comparisons, however, are found to be significantly different, showing that inter-laboratory differences strongly depend on the experimental conditions of the laboratories. The FDM are publicly available to the research community.

    Abstract [en]

    Mean opinion scores obtained from subjective quality assessment are widely used as a ground truth for the development of predictive quality models. The underlying variance between observer ratings is typically quantified using confidence intervals, which do not provide any direct insight into the underlying causes of the disagreement. For better understanding of human visual quality perception and to develop more accurate models, it is important to identify the factors that impact on the variations in quality ratings. This work considers one such factor: observer confidence. This consideration is motivated by the view that quality assessment is a difficult task and hence quality ratings are provided with varying levels of confidence. The first goal of this paper is to analyse the results of an experiment to determine association between observer confidence and image quality judgement. Secondly, models are developed that aim to predict mean observer confidence as a complementary measure to the widely used mean opinion scores. It is shown that there is indeed a strong interrelation between quality perception and confidence, resulting in predictive models of high accuracy.

    Psychophysical Assessment of Perceived Interest in Natural Images: The ROI-D Database2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    We introduce a novel region-of-interest (ROI) database for natural image content, the ROI-D database. The database consists of ROI maps created from manual selections obtained in a psychophysical experiment with 20 participants. The presented stimuli were 42 photographic images taken from 3 publicly available image quality databases. In addition to the ROI selections, dominance ratings were recorded that provide further insight into the interest of the selected ROI in relation to the background. In this paper, the experiment is described, the resulting ROI database is analysed, and possible applications of the database are discussed. The ROI-D database is made freely available to the image processing research community.

    Abstract [en]

    In recent years, the notion of Quality of Experience (QoE) has gained increased attention to represent the quality of a service as it is perceived by the users. Accordingly, QoE amalgamates service integrity quantified by conventional\linebreak Quality of Service (QoS) parameters with non-technical but subjective factors. In this paper, we provide a survey on the evolution of QoE concepts in multimedia systems touching on the past, present, and future aspects. Specifically, the ideas behind QoE are discussed and an overview of related standardization work is provided. On this basis, QoE metrics for speech, image, and video are described. An outlook of future work and challenges is also provided.

    Privacy threats related to user profiling in online social networks2012Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    The popularity of Online Social Networks (OSNs) has increased the visibility of users profiles and interactions performed between users. In this paper we structure different privacy threats related to OSNs and describe six different types of privacy threats. One of these threats, named public information harvesting, is previously not documented so we therefore present it in further detail by also presenting the results from a proof-of-concept implementation of that threat. The basis of the attack is gathering of user interactions from various open groups on Facebook which then is transformed into a social interaction graph. Since the data gathered from the OSN originates from open groups it could be executed by any third-party connected to the Internet independently of the users' privacy settings. In addition to presenting the different privacy threats we also we propose a range of different protection techniques.

    Abstract [en]

    Researchers put in tremendous amount of time and effort in order to crawl the information from online social networks. With the variety and the vast amount of information shared on online social networks today, different crawlers have been designed to capture several types of information. We have developed a novel crawler called SINCE. This crawler differs significantly from other existing crawlers in terms of efficiency and crawling depth. We are getting all interactions related to every single post. In addition, are we able to understand interaction dynamics, enabling support for making informed decisions on what content to re-crawl in order to get the most recent snapshot of interactions. Finally we evaluate our crawler against other existing crawlers in terms of completeness and efficiency. Over the last years we have crawled public communities on Facebook, resulting in over 500 million unique Facebook users, 50 million posts, 500 million comments and over 6 billion likes.

    Online Social Networks (OSNs) have changed the way people use the internet. Over the past few years these platforms have helped societies to organize riots and revolutions such as the Arab Spring or the Occupying Movements. One key fact in particular is how such events and organizations spread through out the world with social interactions, though, not much research has been focused on how to efficiently access such data and furthermore, make it available to researchers. While everyone in the field of OSN research are using tools to crawl this type of networks our approach differs significantly from the other tools out there since we are getting all interactions related to every single post. In this paper we show means of developing an efficient crawler that is able to capture all social interactions on public communities on OSNs such as Facebook.

    Abstract [en]

    Video streaming and mesh-based peer-to-peer file sharing are two of the most bandwidth-demanding applications in the current Internet. In particular non-popular video streaming is on the increase, and future networks are likely to be even more involved in this type of application. Another expected ma jor defining trait of future network is heterogeneity, not only with respect to access technologies, but also several other factors, such as user mobility and terminal capability. This extended abstract delineates some of the most pressing challenges to be faced by mesh-based collaborative video streaming systems, with particular focus on maintaining adequate Quality of Experience (QoE).

    This paper reports on a modeling and evaluation study of session characteristics of Bit- Torrent traffic. BitTorrent is a second generation Peer-to-Peer (P2P) application recently developed as an alternative to the classical client-server model to reduce the load burden on content servers and networks. Results are reported on measuring, modeling and analy- sis of application layer traces collected at the Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) and at a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). For doing this, a measurement infrastructure has been developed at BTH to collect P2P traffic. A dedicated modeling methodology has been put forth as well. New results are reported on session characteristics of BitTorrent, and it is observed that session interarrival times can be accurately modeled by the hyper- exponential distribution while session durations and sizes can be reasonably well modeled by the lognormal distribution.

    The paper reports on a detailed study of the BitTorrent content distribution system. We first present a measurement infrastructure designed to allow detailed, message-level capture and analysis of P2P traffic. An associated modeling methodology is presented as well. These tools have been used to measure and model the BitTorrent protocol, which is observed to exhibit exponential characteristics of session interarrival times. We also observe that session durations and sizes are modeled with a lognormal distribution.

    Evaluation of Swarm Video Streaming2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    IPTV has been hailed as a “killer app'' of the Internet for a long time, but it has yet to really make a major breakthrough, due to various technical and political reasons. The recent influx of community-driven video distribution has re-actualized the research into efficient distribution methods for streaming video. In this paper, we suggest a number of modifications and extensions to the BitTorrent distribution and replication system to make it suitable for use in providing a streaming video delivery service, and implement parts of these in a simulator. Also, we report on a simulation study as well as a large-scale real-world study of the extensions on PlanetLab. Results show that BitTorrent can be used as a bandwidth-efficient alternative to traditional IPTV solutions.

    Abstract [en]

    Context: Organizations generate a number of solutions or ideas for a problem, by then select and synthesize some of these ideas for further development. Idea synthesis as an important phase of innovation process causes a reduction of enormous ideas to be considered by an interested company. Accordingly, innovation process can benefit from integration of ideas with restricted perspectives. Idea synthesis is effective when the defined product is novel, has high impact, is of low cost, and has good support from stakeholders. Idea synthesis is facilitated by the used of variety of structures. Interactive groups which require physical meeting of the participants are a facilitated forum for idea synthesis, where organizations try to utilize the multiple perspectives of groups. An alternative to this approach is bilateral communication between potential innovators. Bilateral communication is used by innovators that network with each other to identify related ideas and technologies in the context of open innovation. Software not only enables interactive groups and bilateral communication but also amplifies the performance of these structures by replacing them with online workshops or social networking. While both these structures are performed and justified through the use of software, it is not clear which of these structures is more effective. Objectives: The aim behind conducting this research is to compare the effectiveness of interactive groups and bilateral communication for idea synthesis. Additionally, besides the factors that affect achieving an agreement among the group members in both structures, a consistent pattern of idea synthesizing can be identified through the observation of participants’ behaviors,. Methods: In this study two research methodologies were used; a controlled experiment and a multiple-case study. First, an experiment was conducted to compare the effectiveness of idea synthesis of interactive group and bilateral communication channel for software product innovation. A total of 78 software engineering students generated software based solutions for a problem individually and subsequently combined their ideas to improve their initial solutions, either through the interactive groups or bilateral communication. Second, a multiple-case study using the collected data from the participants’ chat and questionnaires was conducted to identify the consistent pattern of idea synthesizing and the factors that affect achieving an agreement among the group members in both structures. Results: Statistical analyses of experimental results show no difference between interactive group and bilateral communication channels significantly for idea synthesis. It was found that the groups in bilateral communication channels could not generate more effective ideas than interactive groups in terms of novelty, feasibility, impact value, and stakeholder support through the ideas synthesizing. The identified factors which influence agreement among the group members, both challenges and determinants, in interactive groups and bilateral communication channels are categorized separately. Barriers in achieving an agreement between participants are included in context of ideas and participants’ interests in bilateral communication, while the barriers in interactive groups are features of ideas and participants’ features. Moreover, an agreement between participants is yielded in context of ideas and participants’ features in bilateral communication, while the agreement in interactive groups is yielded in context of ideas and participants’ interests. Conclusions: We conclude that there is no difference between interactive groups and bilateral communication for idea synthesis. The solutions achieved through both structures are not significantly different in terms of novelty, feasibility, impact value and stakeholder support. Moreover, achievement of an agreement in both structures not only depends on the context and features of ideas but also features of participants. On the one hand, the presence of ideas with consistent context and features besides motivated participants, interested in performing the idea synthesizing, lead to achieving an agreement. On the other hand, ideas with inconsistent context and features, lack of participants’ interest in sharing and synthesizing idea, lack of communicating, and lack of time managing hinder achieving to an agreement.

    Mobil kommunikation utvecklas mycket snabbt med tiden, är ny teknik införs för att underlätta mobilanvändare mer av tekniken. Det förflutna teknik ersätts av nya och behov ökar för ny teknik som skall utvecklas. En sådan utveckling är fjärde generationens nät. Kallas även kommande generationen eller nästa generations nät. Införandet av 4G har räckvidden för mobil kommunikation. Nu mobil är inte bara en enhet som används för att prata, men dess mer eller mindre en bärbar dator som kan tjäna olika syften. 4G erbjuder högre dataöverföringshastigheter med sömlös roaming. Den mobila användaren kan kommunicera utan störningar samtidigt som du slår sin täckning nätverk. 4G är fortfarande passerar genom forskning och därför finns det vissa problem som behöver rättas till för att gynna användarna av den helt. I denna rapport diskuterar vi olika utmaningar 4G står inför och lösningar på dessa problem diskuteras. Vi föreslår vårt eget sätt att förbättra QoS i 4G genom kombination av mobilitet protokoll SMIP och SIP. Vi föreslår att genom att använda ett sådant system som vi kan uppnå bättre QoS under processen för överlämnandet.

    Ett långvarigt problem med att rendera stora scener är depth-fighting; en visuell artefakt som uppstår när två eller flera fragments överlappar, antingen för att det är ligger direkt på varandra eller för att det inte finns nog med precision i djupbuffern. Detta examensarbete presenterar två nya metoder, Cascaded Deferred Rendering (CDR) och Logarithmic Cascaded Deferred Rendering (LogCDR) som en lösning på depth-fighting som framträder när de inte finns nog med precision. Detta examensarbete utvärderar också en redan existerande metod, logaritmisk djupbuffer, och jämför den med standard djupbuffern i OpenGL, CDR samt LogCDR. Den mest lovande metoden funnen var logaritmisk djupbuffer för dess hastighet, lätthet att implementera och enklare att lägga till stöd för transparans till.

    Abstract [en]

    Context. Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are information systems that manage manufacturing processes in factories. The execution of MES processes requires non-enterprise integration, which integrates MES applications, services, and automation systems within the factories. Objectives. We aim at developing a modeling approach that can be used to represent and execute MES processes. Having such an approach would help MES vendors to reduce the development cost to reconfigure systems, in order to achieve better business flexibility. Methods. In order to understand the state of the art of manufacturing modeling techniques, we perform a systematic literature review (SLR) in scientific article sources, including IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Compendex, Inspec, and Springer Link. In consideration of the criteria in modeling and executing MES processes, we evaluate the selected process modeling techniques. Based on the result of evaluation, we propose a three-view-based approach to support process execution. We develop a prototype to prove that an MES process can be executed by following our approach. We also conduct semi-structured interviews in industry to validate whether our proposed approach achieves the objectives. Results. In the SLR, 24 primary studies are selected. Our analysis reveals that existing modeling techniques have limitations to enable process execution. To overcome the limitation, we propose a three-view-based approach, which has an MES process view, an abstract plant view to represent the structure of technical systems, and a mapping view to enable the communication between MES tasks and the technical systems. We develop a prototype as the implementation of our approach, which comprises: a graphical editor for the abstract plant view, a generator of message routes for the mapping view, and a typical MES process to be executed in the context of a warehouse management system. The semi-structured interviews we conducted with three industrial experts show positive feedback to use and generalize our approach in industry, in case comprehensive tools can be established. Conclusions. Compared to the existing modeling techniques, the three-view-based approach is specifically tailored toward process execution. Based on the feedback from industry, we conclude that applying our approach provides the possibility to achieve better reconfigurability and flexibility of MES.

    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT: “The real problem of blindness is not the loss of eyesight. The real problem is the misunderstanding and lack of information that exist. If a blind person has proper training and opportunity, blindness can be reduced to a physical nuisance.”- National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Multi-touch screen is a relatively new and revolutionary technology in mobile phone industry. Being mostly software driven makes these phones highly customizable for all sorts of users including blind and visually impaired people. In this research, we present new interface layouts for multi-touch screen mobile phones that enable visionless people to enter text in the form of Braille cells. Braille is the only way for these people to directly read and write without getting help from any extra assistive instruments. It will be more convenient and interesting for them to be provided with facilities to interact with new technologies using their language, Braille. We started with a literature review on existing eyes-free text entry methods and also text input devices, to find out their strengths and weaknesses. At this stage we were aiming at identifying the difficulties that unsighted people faced when working with current text entry methods. Then we conducted questionnaire surveys as the quantitative method and interviews as the qualitative method of our user study to get familiar with users’ needs and expectations. At the same time we studied the Braille language in detail and examined currently available multi-touch mobile phone feedbacks. At the designing stage, we first investigated different possible ways of entering a Braille “cell” on a multi-touch screen, regarding available input techniques and also considering the Braille structure. Then, we developed six different alternatives of entering the Braille cells on the device; we laid out a mockup for each and documented them using Gestural Modules Document and Swim Lanes techniques. Next, we prototyped our designs and evaluated them utilizing Pluralistic Walkthrough method and real users. Next step, we refined our models and selected the two bests, as main results of this project based on good gestural interface principles and users’ feedbacks. Finally, we discussed the usability of our elected methods in comparison with the current method visually impaired use to enter texts on the most popular multi-touch screen mobile phone, iPhone. Our selected designs reveal possibilities to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the existing text entry methods in multi-touch screen mobile phones for Braille literate people. They also can be used as guidelines for creating other multi-touch input devices for entering Braille in an apparatus like computer.

    In the software development life cycle, changes are inevitable. Designing the architecture of the software and writing the source code does not end the software life cycle. The software system evolves as changes in the environment and requirements are incorporated in the system. If these changes are not managed properly, the architecture of the software deteriorates and leads to architecture erosion. This study is an effort to address the problem of architecture erosion and to keep the software architecture live and up to date. In this study we propose a method to minimize or avoid architecture erosion. This method provides a systematic way to design the architecture of the software system. It is based on the concept of architecture vision that is the ideal representation of the architecture of the software in hand. This method treats architecture document and architecture design document as two completely different documents. Moreover this study presents an effort to establish a relationship between the implemented architecture of the system, the architecture design document and an architecture vision. The dynamic validation of the devised method shows that this method is suitable for medium to large scale projects that have several releases. All the activities of this method revolve around the efforts to keep the architecture of the software aligned with an architecture vision. The iterative nature of the method and synchronization of the implemented architecture with the architecture vision helps to detect and reduce architecture erosion. This method does not conflict with or replaces any development or management process or method (like RUP, agile, water fall etc), but exists parallel to them.

    Abstract [en]

    Context. Today’s parallel systems are widely used in different computational tasks. Developing parallel programs to make maximum use of the computing power of parallel systems is tricky and efficient tuning of parallel programs is often very hard. Objectives. In this study we present a performance prediction and visualization tool named VPPB for a Linux environment, which had already been introduced by Broberg et.al, [1] for a Solaris2.x environment. VPPB shows the predicted behavior of a multithreaded program using any number of processors and the behavior is shown on two different graphs. The prediction is based on a monitored uni-processor execution. Methods. An experimental evaluation was carried out to validate the prediction reliability of the developed tool. Results. Validation of prediction is conducted, using an Intel multiprocessor with 8 processors and PARSEC 2.0 benchmark suite application programs. The validation shows that the speed-up predictions are +/-7% of a real execution. Conclusions. The experimentation of the VPPB tool showed that the prediction of VPPB is reliable and the incurred overhead into the application programs is low.

    Context: Global software development is the emerging trend in today’s world as it provides the software companies with certain advantages like access to skill and cheap labor, low development cost etc. There are also many challenges and risks involved in globally distributed software project as compare to co-located projects like communication, coordination and control etc. due to geographical separation. There is also a recent interest in applying agile methods in offshore projects in order to minimize certain offshore challenges. Agile methods in collocated environment demands high communication, coordination and collaboration between the team members. However implementing agile methods in distributed environment is beneficial and challenging too, because of inherited GSD challenges. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully understand the benefits and challenges of applying agile methods in distributed project before actually initiating the development. Objectives: This research study aims to look at current empirical evidence regarding benefits and challenges of applying agile methods in offshore projects, in order to understand it properly. Furthermore, we have examined that which of the benefits and challenges reported in literature can be seen in practice. This helped us in finding out the similarities and differences between the benefits and challenges that are reported in literature and in practice. Methods: To fulfill our aims and objectives we have first conducted the detailed systematic review analysis of the empirical studies from year 2000-2010. The systematic review approach helped us to collect and summarize the empirical data available regarding the benefits and challenges of applying agile methods in offshore projects. The research studies were identified from the most authentic databases that are scientifically and technically peer reviewed such as Inspec and Compendex, IEEE Xplore, ACM digital library, Springer Link, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Scopus, ISI Web of Knowledge and Willey Inter Science Journal Finder. Furthermore, industrial survey was conducted in order to identify whether the benefits and challenges enlisted in literature can be confirmed by practitioners. This helped us in determining the similarities and differences between benefits and challenges that are reported in empirical literature and industrial survey. Results: From systematic review results, we have found the list of benefits and challenges of most applied agile practices such as daily scrum meetings, sprint planning meetings, sprint review meetings, retrospective meetings, pair programming, short release and on-site customer. The most common benefits related to above identified agile practices are early problem identification, project visibility, increase communication, coordination and collaboration, trust, clarification of work and requirements, early client feedback and customer satisfaction. Similarly the most common challenges associated with above identified agile practices are lack of linguistic skills, culture differences and temporal differences. From survey result, it was found that the majority of benefits and challenges identified through literature review are prevalent in software industries to some extent. We were able to identify the benefits and challenges of agile practices such as daily scrum, sprint planning meetings, sprint review, retrospective meetings and short release. The most common benefits of above identified agile practices highlighted by survey participants are project visibility, early problem identification, increase coordination, opportunity for knowledge sharing and transferring, immediate feedback from client, and opportunity for understanding the task properly. Similarly the most common challenges identified by survey participants are language problems, temporal difference and difficult to explain and understand problems or issues over communication technologies. However, there are certain challenges like trust and culture issues, which have received most attention in the empirical literature, but are not identified by majority of industry respondents. Conclusions: From the information attained so far regarding the benefits and challenges of agile methods in offshore projects, we observed that there is an emerging trend of using agile methods in offshore projects and practitioners actually found it beneficial. The benefits of agile practices does not achieve straightaway there are certain challenging factors of GSD too, which can restrict the implementation or make the methodology not useful such as communication, coordination and collaboration. These challenges are usually occurred due to geographical separation, lack of trust and linguistic skills, culture difference etc. The presented work add contribution in a sense as to the best of our knowledge no systematic review effort has been done in this area with specifically focuses on highlighting the benefits and challenges. From survey results we found that majority of benefits and challenges highlighted by survey participants are to some extent same with what we have already studied in literature. However there are certain important challenges which have received most attention in empirical literature but were less identified by the survey participants like trust issue and culture difference. The benefits and challenges identified through industrial survey do not add much information into our attention. This does not mean that all possible benefits and challenges of applying agile methods in offshore project have been explored. The responses which were received from industry practitioners were quite few to make any kind of arguments. There is a probability that we missed the important benefits and challenges related to particular agile practices during our industrial survey. Therefore we conclude that a much thorough and inclusive answers should be required to identify the benefits and challenges of applying agile methods in offshore projects.

    Abstract [en]

    This research thesis presents a study of mobile-enhanced accessibility evaluation. In the first phase we have identified the evaluation methods that enable evaluation of mobile-enhanced accessibility. In the second phase we have performed evaluation of a specific mobile-enhanced accessibility prototype named “Augment” based on some selected evaluation methods that enables evaluation of mobile-enhanced accessibility. Finding methodologies for accessibility evaluation is just as important as early assessment. Therefore, in the last step on the basis of the evaluation results and literature review findings, we have presented an efficient and usable evaluation method that would enable valid and reliable evaluation of mobile-enhanced accessibility. The name of the presented evaluation method is “AccessEva” that is a diary method supported by a software application, which will run on a smart phone with the mobile-based accessibility software. This enables the testers to survey user attitudes, and experiences about the mobile-enhanced accessibility. At the end of this diary method period we suggest that a group discussion will be introduced and conducted together with the participants under the supervision of evaluators.

    Abstract [en]

    In this thesis we presented a new direction for handling missing values in multi agent-based simulation (MABS) at micro-level by using truth tables and logical relations. Although micro-level simulation is a vast field to use logical relations with truth tables to find missing values but it takes values into account at individual levels. We used databases in form of tables to extract missing values. Our literature review suggested us a method for input handling by using electronically saved truth tables. We have defined logical relations according to scenario by interacting with truth tables to find appropriate missing values. Our conclusions suggested a method which can find appropriate values for input parameters when they are missing. Accurate results have been gained according to updated database. In this thesis we have concluded that missing values would be handled in different ways, such as: Artificial neural network, K-nearest neighbor, Statistical method and Data mining; etc… These methods have not facilitated in finding appropriate missing values as we saw in literature. We have created a method that can find missing values and produce good results. We have run our method on a specific scenario to check the efficiency of input handling that motivated us to arrange database in a proper way to handle missing values along.

    Abstract [en]

    This study is about how a person who is used to play games experiences playing a game with their eyes as input. The participants played a 3D game where the player had to collect coins by moving a ball over them. The participants first tried the game with keyboard as input and then right after only interacting by gazing via screen. The achieved score was recorded both for input from keyboard and input from eye. After the game session the participants were asked to answer two questionnaires that contained questions about their background and questions referring to the game they just played. The experiment was performed in a lab with a TobiiT60 eye tracker. All participants got lower score when they used eye tracking as input but most of the participants found it to be more fun. We reached the conclusion that, with the game used in our experiment, the participants felt that gaining a high score was not the most important. Instead they ranked having fun as a more important factor. Our experiment has shown that using an eye tracker can make a casual game more fun.

This paper describes the results and recommendations based on identified challenges.

    Abstract [en]

    Successful software development and management depends not only on the technologies, methods and processes employed but also on the judgments and decisions of the humans involved. These, in turn, are affected by the basic views and attitudes of the individual engineers. The objective of this paper is to establish if these views and attitudes can be linked to the personalities of software engineers. We summarize the literature on personality and software engineering and then describe an empirical study on 47 professional engineers in ten different Swedish software development companies. The study evaluated the personalities of these engineers via the IPIP 50-item five-factor personality test and prompted them on their attitudes towards and basic views on their professional activities. We present extensive statistical analyses of their responses to show that there are multiple, significant associations between personality factors and software engineering attitudes. The tested individuals are more homogeneous in personality than a larger sample of individuals from the general population. Taken together, the methodology and personality test we propose and the associated statistical analyses can help find and quantify relations between complex factors in software engineering projects in both research and practice.

    Abstract [en]

    There has been much recent interest in how to help students in higher education develop their generic skills, especially since this is a focus of the Bologna process that aims to standardize European higher education. However, even though the Master thesis is the final and often crucial part of a graduate degree and requires many generic skills very little research has directly focused on them. In particular, there is a lack of such knowledge for engineering education programs. In this paper we present results from a survey where we asked 23 students from three different Swedish universities about which generic skills are needed and developed in a Master thesis project in Software Engineering. One outcome of our analysis is that there is a lack of understanding on how to define, and thus examine, generic skills in software engineering thesis projects.

Thus new ways are needed to optimize these activities so that high quality can be retained even with reduced costs and effort. Here we present a framework for the management and optimization of verification & validation activities (VAMOS). An initial evaluation of the framework based on historical data as well as data extracted with a new tool has been done and are described briefly.

    Abstract [en]

    Developing software for high-dependable space applications and systems is a formidable task. With new political and market pressures on the space industry to deliver more software at a lower cost, optimization of their methods and standards need to be investigated. The industry has to follow standards that strictly set quality goals and prescribes engineering processes and methods to fulfill them. The overall goal of this study is to evaluate if current use of the standards from the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) is cost efficient and if there are ways to make the process leaner while still maintaining quality and to analyze if their verification and validation (V&V) activities can be optimized. This paper presents results from two industrial case studies of companies in the European space industry that are following ECSS standards in various V&V activities. The case studies reported here focus on how ECSS standards are used by the companies, how that affects their processes and, in the end, how their V&V activities can be further optimized.

    Abstract [en]

    Software for space applications has special requirements in terms of reliability and dependability. Standards are one of the primary mechanisms to ensure a sufficient quality level, with the European Cooperation on Space Standardization (ECSS) standards being the main ones. The use of standards is not only a benefit since they can incur considerable costs in terms of, for example, additional documentation and activities. For making the right decisions on which development and quality assurance activities to focus on it is important to know not only their added value but also their costs. Here we present a method for analyzing the cost of standard compliance (CoSC) in software development. It is based on a model which divides the costs into four different types based on their primary value: development, quality-adding, confidence-adding and adherence. The adherence costs are those costs that are incurred by or follows from the use of a standard but does not add any immediate value to either the functionality, quality or quality assurance of the software. Initial results from applying the method in an industrial company adhering to ECSS is presented.

    Abstract [en]

    Context. Process improvement using lean software development uses measures to answer information needs. Measures are important in process improvement as they identify whether improvements have been made or further improvements are needed. Objectives. This study aims to identify the measures proposed in literature for lean software development and structure them according to ISO/IEC 15939. Methods. The research methodology consists of systematic mapping and uses thematic analysis. Results. Lean software development literature has become more frequently published from 1996 to 2013. The most common research types were evaluation research and experience reports. Themes were identified in measures resulting in the identification of 22 base measures, 13 derived measures and 14 indicators in total. Identified measures were then structured using a proposed meta-model adapted from ISO/IEC 15939. Using the proposed meta-model twelve models of measures were instantiated. Conclusions. Gaps exist in the lean principles for deferring commitment and respecting people. Structuring measures in models presents opportunities to identify shared dependencies in measures. Lean software development research guidelines were defined. Further research into the comparison of indicators, the industrial use of measures and the representation of models of measures is needed.

    Abstract [en]

    Network Virtualization implies the need for sharing network resources. However, exclusive resource allocation to users drives blocking probabilities and cost while potentially leaving precious resources under-utilized in constrained environments. Motivated by these observations, this paper analyzes careful overbooking according to Service Level Agreements that specify desired degrees of availability. Besides of full availability of the requested resources, a second level of limited availability, implying a well-defined reduction of the allocated resource, is taken into account. Particular attention is paid to the gain borderline, representing the possibility of accommodating one extra user beyond exclusive allocation without violating the SLAs. Simple but telling formulae provide insights into requirements for careful overbooking, worst-case capacity reduction factors from full to limited availability, and the conditions under which it is sensible to integrate users with different activity levels. We also link capacity reductions to potential decreases in Quality of Experience.

    Abstract [en]

    Churn of revenue-generating and dissatisfied users has become a major point of concern for service providers and network operators. As services rely on interconnecting networks, service performance and thus user satisfaction depend on network performance. Consequently, it is of utmost importance to understand the relationships between user perception, captured by quantitative Quality of Experience (QoE) parameters, and network performance, described by Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. This paper provides insights into fundamental relationships between QoE and QoS, formulated as partial differential equations describing changes in QoE with respect to specific QoS parameters. A set of illustrating examples from the literature is given. Furthermore, the different impacts of provisioning and degree of success or failure of delivery on QoE are discussed, leading to the QoE provisioning-delivery hysteresis. This hysteresis provides a striking motivation for employing elastic adaptation mechanisms to available resources instead of suffering from uncontrolled data loss.
