    Abstract [en]

STARKA Betongelement AB is a privately owned company with a focus on manufacturing prefabricated concrete elements. STARKA works with everything from design, manufacturing to the assembly of concrete elements. The process that is mainly studied is their design process, here the different elements are planned to be manufactured and assembled. For the manufacture and assembly, drawings are produced as a basis for this work, these drawings consist of detailed drawings. The creation of these details is currently a time-consuming process; hence, this study aims to develop a more efficient working method that can both make it easier for designers and reduce demanding working hours.

During the work, the design thinking process is followed as a method when developing the solution. The method consists of four primary phases, starting with understanding the problem that has been given. Furthermore, the area of the problem is studied, through various literature studies, observations, interviews and various tests. After forming a good foundation, different ideas are created to solve the problem. Finally, the final solution is implemented at the company and the implementation was evaluated.

Results consist of an AutoLISP-program that consists of all the necessary functions under one program, to create the detailed drawings for production. The functions that appear in the program are as follows: measurement of details, in-cast goods measurement, cut line, reinforcement text and “hitsymbol”. Features and their specifications used in the program have been identified through interviews and observations with the engineers at STARKA.

For assembly drawings, two different solutions have been developed, the first of which tackles engineers' problems in creating complicated details. This is achieved by utilizing the construction’s 3D-model to create the desired detailed drawings. The second solution focuses on generalizing different standard parts and eliminating excess information, such as external dimensions. This in turn creates a better prerequisite for more general details that can be reused in new drawings to save working time.

s a conclusion for production drawings, the work is facilitated by the program consist of all the necessary functions. Since the features have their pre-inserted specifications, there is no need to configure them afterwards and the insertion becomes correct from the first step. The designers have found the solution helpful and have simplified their work by making “handpåläggning” more efficient and reducing working hours. “Handpåläggning” consist of the functions and methods that the engineers at STARKA use to finalize the drawings. Regarding assembly drawings, the use of 3D-models is considered to be very demanding on computers, but good assistance in complicated details. The standard details make it easier to use standard generalized details to avoid creating and editing new ones for each project.

EFFECTS OF THE EXTERNAL CONSEQUENCES OF ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES ON EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY TOPIC: Effects of the External Consequences of Organizational Activities on Employee Motivation Fashakin, Teniola Abiodun Odumade, Adebola Oluwatosin SUPERVISOR: Alsen, Göran COURSE: Master Thesis in Business Administration DEPARTMENT: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden PROGRAMME: Master of Science in Business Administration PURPOSES: The purposes of our thesis include the following: • To know the activities carried out by organization(s) • To know the external consequences of these activities • To know how these consequences affect employee motivation • Identify certain external factors that actually measures employee motivation RESEARCH QUESTION: How Do the External Consequences of Organizational Activities Affect Employee Motivation? METHODS: Our thesis involves looking into 3 different but inter-related issues- organizational activities, external consequences and employee motivation. And so, we collated data using the secondary as well as the primary sources of data. Our secondary data includes a review of the literature which is to enlighten us on what has been studied about our topic while the primary data encompasses gathering data by constructing a questionnaire, conducting interviews, and also organising focus groups; all of these to aid giving answer(s) to our research question. FINDINGS: From the research we conducted as well as the analysis we made, we were able to get a proof that there is a strong link between an organization’s activities, the external consequences of such activities as well as how the relationship between these two affects employee motivation. We have been able to establish the fact that employees also look outside their organization for incentives that could enable them to perform their duties properly.

The Impact of Financing Structure and Macroeconomic Variables on Profitability of listed Ghanaian banks2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT The sustainability of banks profitability is very important to national economy. This is because banking institution serves as financial intermediary and hence supports the flow of funds from the borrower to the user of fund to grow economic activities. However banks profitability is affected by various variables both internal and internal. Some of these may be control by the banks whiles other may not be controlled internally. To investigate the impact of financial structure and macroeconomic variables on listed banks profitability in Ghana, secondary financial data of all the seven (7) listed banks were collected from the Ghana Stock Exchange. The profitability variables or ratios used are return on equity (ROE), return on asset (ROA) and net profit net interest margin (NIM). The financial structure components considered are the long-term debt to the total capital; short-term debt to total capital. The macroeconomic variables include the GDP, inflationary rate and the Exchange rate (GH¢ per US$). A correlation matrix was run using SPPS regression tool with profitability ratios as the dependent variables whiles the macroeconomic and the financial structure variables are considered as the independent variables. The results were mix: the ROA is negatively related to both total debt and short term debt and the relationship are significant. However, ROA is positively related to long term debt but not statistically significant. ROA is also negatively related to GDP and not statistically significant. ROA is positively related and statistically significant to exchange rate. Again, inflation is positively related to ROA but not significant. ROE on the other hand is statistically significant and positively related to short term debt and total debt. Exchange rate, long term debt is negatively and significantly related to ROE while inflation is positively but insignificantly related to ROE. However, ROE is insignificantly but negatively related to GDP. Net Interest Margin (NIM) is significantly and positively related to short term debt but insignificantly and positively related to inflation. NIM is, however, significantly and negatively related to total debt. This implies that an increase in sales growth, total debt and firm size is likely to result in a fall in NIM. Also, exchange rate, GDP and long term debt are negatively and insignificantly related to NIM. It is important to note that negative relationship between dependent variable and independent variable implies that if the dependent variable increases then the independent variable decreases. Ghanaian banks take advantage of the high inflation regime to increase cost of borrowings to their valued customers to increase their net interest margin and hence increase profitability while strategically using short-term debt in their financial structure to avoid paying long-term high cost of borrowings which will economically destroy shareholders value. Again the banks also increase their assets base as the economy grows (GDP) to improve their profitability in terms of returns on equity through higher banks size to meet all customers and economic activities The study provides an empirical conclusion that listed Ghanaian banks use 80.23% debt and 17.77% equity hence the capital structure of Ghanaian banks is hugely skewed toward debt. However, the debt structure of listed Ghanaian banks indicates more than 70% short term debt and less than 9% long term debt. Thus the impact of capital structure and macro-economic variables on profitability of Ghanaian listed banks is such that short term debt positively influences profitability and long term debt negatively affects profitability.

Att vårda patienter med hepatit C -Ur blivande sjuksköterskors perspektiv: En empirisk kvalitativ studie2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Standard vs. revolutionary sealing:: An investigative thesis on two methods of conceptual designing with regards to the root causes of failure mode in raw mill 7.2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The grinding rollers of raw mill 7 operate in very harsh conditions and, because of this, suffer from excessive failure mode due to lip seal deterioration. Foreign material penetrates the deteriorated lip seal and enters the bearings resulting in bearing failure. Failure mode brings about high maintenance costs for the cement-producing company Cementa AB. This thesis aims to accomplish two things. 1- Hypothesize a set of root causes for failure mode and link them to existing literature studies to determine what actions should be taken to prevent or at least postpone failure mode. 2- Generate several new conceptual designs for the sealing mechanism by either creating a revolutionary sealing design or taking inspiration from standard seals currently on the market. The generated concepts aim to provide Cementa AB with a new perspective as well as mitigate some or all the root causes for failure mode if implemented.

The hypothesized root causes for failure mode are categorized through the creation of a problem tree and are defined as lip seal failure, lubricative pressure and contamination, tribologically improper friction, vibration, and finally very harsh conditions that are indigenous to raw mills in general and that are seemingly incompatible with the current sealing mechanism. Revolutionary concepts are brainstormed entirely from an experimental perspective, while standard concepts are inspired by established sealing technology on the market. Both alternatives are then conceptually adapted to the grinding roller of raw mill 7 and, with inaccurate scaling, 3D modelled with the aid of Autodesk Inventor.

7 concepts, revolutionary and standard combined, are generated as a result. The revolutionary concepts have been deemed non-viable due to the limited timeframe and scope of the thesis. Instead, the selected seal for the upgrade is a labyrinth seal, which is a non-contact standard seal that has the potential to mitigate many of the root causes for failure mode. The literature studies on the hypothesized root causes also indicate that there are actions that could postpone failure mode should Cementa AB chose to retain the original sealing mechanism for a longer period.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Title: A study on teenager’s attitude towards marketing on Facebook

Authors: Adam Abrahamsson and Kenan Secic

    Supervisor: Anders Wrenne

    Department: Blekinge Institute of Technology

Course: A bachelor thesis in business administration, FE1453

    Scope: 15 credits

Purpose:The aim of this study is to contribute new knowledge about how marketing on Facebook can affect teenagers, as well as what awareness and understanding there is in this target group about marketing on Facebook. We are also interested in looking at whether there are any differences between the teenagers from the perspective of critical and rational thinking.

Method: To be able to answer our questions and fulfill our purpose, we chose to conduct a survey in four different schools, in the district of Karlskrona. The survey was carried out in the seventh and ninth classes as these are expected to have students who are 14 and 16 years old. In total, we received 169 responses, of which 86 came from the younger target group and 83 came from the older target group. We picked schools because we considered the classrooms as a suitable environment for a survey, and a place where we can gather a large number of people from our target audience in one place. Because of the lack of resources in terms of time, all four schools where from the same district.

Conclusion: The main conclusions of this study are that 14 and 16-year-old Swedish adolescents, in Karlskrona, generally have a positive attitude toward marketing on Facebook. But we can also notice that there is a difference in attitude toward marketing on Facebook between 14 and 16-year-olds depending on what kind of marketing it is. We believe that this difference may be because the age groups are at different stages of cognitive development and therefore are at different stages in their rational and critical thinking.

Vuxna individers upplevelser av hur deras levnadsvanor har påverkats av diabetes mellitus typ 1: En analys av patografier2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Finansiell riskredovisning2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

WLAN Security: IEEE 802.11b or Bluetooth - which standard provides best security methods for companies?2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Which security holes and security methods do IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth offer? Which standard provides best security methods for companies? These are two interesting questions that this thesis will be about. The purpose is to give companies more information of the security aspects that come with using WLANs. An introduction to the subject of WLAN is presented in order to give an overview before the description of the two WLAN standards; IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth. The thesis will give an overview of how IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth works, a in depth description about the security issues of the two standards will be presented, security methods available for companies, the security flaws and what can be done in order to create a secure WLAN are all important aspects to this thesis. In order to give a guidance of which WLAN standard to choose, a comparison of the two standards with the security issues in mind, from a company's point of view is described. We will present our conclusion which entails a recommendation to companies to use Bluetooth over IEEE 802.11b, since it offers better security methods.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Our society is made up of norms that say how we should look, behave and live our lives. Many of these norms focuses on how you as a man or woman should behave in relation to your gender. Gender norms are reflected in design and what we design in products, furniture and buildings. With a gender specified norm critical approach, we examine how gender norms are reflected in design and how we as designers can design with norm criticism. With pattern design as an exploratory approach, we want to highlight and examine how gender norms affect and is repeated in what we design, just like a pattern is defined by lines and shapes that are repeated or experienced to be repeated.

During our investigation it appears that patterns can contribute with discussion and stance that will work in multiple forums. We examine how unisex and male and female can be embodied in patterns, and how norm criticism works as an approach in a design process.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Implementation of an Algorithm For Estimating Lead-Acid Battery State of Charge2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, an algorithm for estimating lead-acid battery state of charge (SOC) is implemented. The algorithm, named “Improved Coulomb Counting Algorithm”, was developed within a master thesis project (M. M. Samolyk & J. Sobczak, “Development of an algorithm for estimating Lead-acid Battery State of Charge and State of Health”, M.S. thesis, Dept. Signal Processing, Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona, Sweden, 2013) with cooperation of a Swedish company – Micropower – Research and Development department.

Currently used method at Micropower is Coulomb Counting; implemented algorithm compares coulomb counting method with open circuit voltage method and uses current, terminal voltage and temperature measurements to finally produce improvement for the very same coulomb counting method and get a better estimation of SOC.

The algorithm was implemented on Micropower Access Battery Monitoring Unit (BMU) using C programming language, so that it can be tested in real time application of the regular battery operation. In the end specific gravity measurements were also presented to comparing the methods.

Barriers and Enablers to Financing Decentralized Solar Energy Systems in Southeast Asia2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A global transition to renewable energy is required to address the sustainability challenge and mitigate the socio-ecological consequences of climate change. This thesis explores what factors contribute to slowing down the transition to renewable energy in Southeast Asia. The region was chosen due to its rising energy demand, high energy poverty rates and unsustainable energy generation. The objective is to identify what barriers and enablers inhibit and encourage the financing of decentralized solar energy systems (DSES) in the region.

The study applied a qualitative approach where five exploratory and 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain rich and diverse insights into the current state of DSES within Southeast Asia. The PESTLE analytical framework was used to code the results in a systematic way.

This study found several barriers inhibiting an increased deployment of DSES. These included ineffective regulatory frameworks, systemic corruption and market monopolization of DSES, financial issues related to the small size of projects as well as technical and financial capacity among local actors.

At the same time, the study identified multiple enablers to address these challenges, including policies encouraging transparency and standardization, capacity building for maintenance or financial literacy and falling project costs due to technological innovation.

Personer som lever med HIV: Upplevelser av att bli vårdade inom hälso- och sjukvården: En allmän litteraturöversikt2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Resultat: Efter analysprocessen uppkom tre kategorier i resultatet.

    Abstract [sv]

Improving QoE over IPTV using FEC and Retransmission2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television), a new and modern concept of emerging technologies with focus on providing cutting edge high-resolution television, broadcast, and other fascinating services, is now easily available with only requirement of high-speed internet. Everytime a new technology is made local, it faces tremendous problems whether from technological point of view to enhance the performance or when it comes down to satisfy the customers. This cutting edge technology has provided researchers to embark and play with different tools to provide better quality while focusing on existing tools. Our target in dissertation is to provide a few interesting facets of IPTV and come up with a concept of introducing an imaginary cache that can re-collect the packets travelling from streaming server to the end user. In the access node this cache would be fixed and then on the basis of certain pre-assumed research work we can conclude how quick retransmission can take place when the end user responds back using RTCP protocol and asks for the retransmission of corrupted/lost packets. In the last section, we plot our scenario of streaming server on one side and client, end user on the other end and make assumption on the basis of throughput, response time and traffic.

From Engineering toManagement: Factors affecting engineer's transition processtoward management roles2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The transition from engineering roles to management positions is a critical phase in

engineers' career development. However, this transition process often presents

significant challenges and necessitates specific personal characteristics, skills, and

motivators. This study aims to identify the impact of these factors on the transition

from engineering to management roles and investigate their influence on engineers'

    career development.

Employing a qualitative approach, this study utilizes thematic analysis to analyze

data derived from in-depth interviews with eight engineers transitioned to

management roles. Transcribed interviews were examined to recognize key themes

    related to the research questions.

Thematic analysis uncovered three central themes linked to the transition process:

personal characteristics, skills, and motivators. Personal characteristics

encompassed leadership, communication, and adaptability. Skills comprised

technical and business acumen, project management, and people management.

Motivators encompassed career advancement, financial rewards, and personal

growth. The analysis also revealed prevalent challenges encountered during the

transition process, including adapting to new roles, and managing workload

    demands.

This study emphasizes the critical importance of effective career planning and

development to facilitate engineers' successful transition into management roles.

The findings suggest that transitioning from engineering roles to management

positions necessitates a distinct set of personal characteristics, skills, and

appropriate motivators. By actively cultivating these attributes, engineers can

overcome the challenges encountered during the transition process.

Future research is recommended to explore the efficacy of diverse training and

development programs aimed at equipping engineers with the requisite skills and

characteristics essential for a successful transition into management roles.

Reviewing and Evaluating Techniques for Modeling and Analyzing Security Requirements2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The software engineering community recognized the importance of addressing security requirements with other functional requirements from the beginning of the software development life cycle. Therefore, there are some techniques that have been developed to achieve this goal. Thus, we conducted a theoretical study that focuses on reviewing and evaluating some of the techniques that are used to model and analyze security requirements. Thus, the Abuse Cases, Misuse Cases, Data Sensitivity and Threat Analyses, Strategic Modeling, and Attack Trees techniques are investigated in detail to understand and highlight the similarities and differences between them. We found that using these techniques, in general, help requirements engineer to specify more detailed security requirements. Also, all of these techniques cover the concepts of security but in different levels. In addition, the existence of different techniques provides a variety of levels for modeling and analyzing security requirements. This helps requirements engineer to decide which technique to use in order to address security issues for the system under investigation. Finally, we found that using only one of these techniques will not be suitable enough to satisfy the security requirements of the system under investigation. Consequently, we consider that it would be beneficial to combine the Abuse Cases or Misuse Cases techniques with the Attack Trees technique or to combine the Strategic Modeling and Attack Trees techniques together in order to model and analyze security requirements of the system under investigation. The concentration on using the Attack Trees technique is due to the reusability of the produced attack trees, also this technique helps in covering a wide range of attacks, thus covering security concepts as well as security requirements in a proper way.

A survey targeting ASPHER members was launched in 2010/11, being a first initiative in improving ethics education in European Schools of Public Health. An 8-items questionnaire collected information on teaching of ethics in public health. A 52% response rate (43/82) revealed that almost all of the schools (95% out of 40 respondents with valid data) included the teaching of ethics in at least one of its programmes. They also expressed the need of support, (e.g.: a model curriculum (n=25), case studies (n=24)), which indicates further work to be met by the ASPHER Working Group on Ethics and Values in Public Health.

Developing Inclusive Innovation Processes and Co-Evolutionary University-Society Approaches in Bolivia2018Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study is part of a worldwide debate on inclusive innovation systems in developing

countries and particularly on the co-evolutionary processes taking place, seen from the

perspective of a public university. The increasing literature that discusses how innovation

systems and development can foster more inclusive and sustainable societies has

inspired this thesis work. Thus, the main problem handled in the research concerns the

question how socially sensitive research practices and policies at a public university in

Bolivia can be stimulated within emerging innovation system dynamics. In that vein,

empirical knowledge is developed at the Universidad Mayor de San SimoÅLn (UMSS),

Cochabamba as a contribution to experience-based learning in the field. Analysis are

nourished by a dialogue with the work of prominent Latin American scholars and

practitioners around the idea of a developmental university and the democratization

of knowledge. The reader will be able to recognize a recursive transit between theory

and practice, where a number of relevant concepts are contextualized and connected

in order to enable keys of critical interpretation and paths of practices amplification

for social inclusion purposes established. The study shows how, based on a previous

experience, new competences and capacities for the Technology Transfer Unit (UTT)

at UMSS were produced, in this case transforming itself into a University Innovation

Centre. Main lessons gained in that experience came from two pilot cluster development

(food and leather sectors) and a multidisciplinary researchers network (UMSS

Innovation Team) where insights found can improve future collaborative relations between

university and society for inclusive innovation processes within the Bolivian

    context.

Developing Inclusive Innovation Processes and Co-Evolutionary Approaches in Bolivia2015Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The concept of National Innovation Systems (NIS) has been widely adopted in developing countries, particularly in Latin American countries, for the last two decades. The concept is used mainly as an ex-ante framework to organize and increase the dynamics of those institutions linked to science, technology and innovation, for catching-up processes of development. In the particular case of Bolivia, and after several decades of social and economic crisis, the promise of a national innovation system reconciles a framework for collaboration between the university, the government and the socio-productive sectors. Dynamics of collaboration generated within NIS can be a useful tool for the pursuit of inclusive development ambitions.

This thesis is focused on inclusive innovation processes and the generation of co-evolutionary processes between university, government and socio-productive sectors. This is the result of 8 years of participatory action research influenced by Mode 2 knowledge-production and Technoscientific approaches.

The study explores the policy paths the Bolivian government has followed in the last three decades in order to organize science, technology and innovation. It reveals that Bolivia has an emerging national innovation system, where its demand-pulled innovation model presents an inclusive approach. Innovation policy efforts in Bolivia are led by the Vice-Ministry of Science and Technology (VCyT). Moreover, NIS involves relational and collaborative approaches between institutions, which imply structural and organizational challenges, particularly for public universities, as they concentrate most of the research capabilities in the country. These universities are challenged to participate in NIS within contexts of weak demanding sectors.

This research focuses on the early empirical approaches and transformations at Universidad Mayor de San Simón (UMSS) in Cochabamba. The aim to strengthen internal innovation capabilities of the university and enhance the relevance of research activities in society by supporting socio-economic development in the framework of innovation systems is led by the Technology Transfer Unit (UTT) at UMSS. UTT has become a recognized innovation facilitator unit, inside and outside the university, by proposing pro-active initiatives to support emerging innovation systems. Because of its complexity, the study focuses particularly on cluster development promoted by UTT. Open clusters are based on linking mechanisms between the university research capabilities, the socio-productive actors and government. Cluster development has shown to be a practical mechanism for the university to meet the demanding sector (government and socio-productive actors) and to develop trust-based inclusive innovation processes. The experiences from cluster activities have inspired the development of new research policies at UMSS, with a strong orientation to foster research activities towards an increased focus on socio-economic development. The experiences gained at UMSS are discussed and presented as a “developmental university” approach.

Inclusive innovation processes with co-evolutionary approaches seem to constitute an alternative path supporting achievement of inclusive development ambitions in Bolivia.

Coordination in Global Software Development: Challenges, associated threats, and mitigating practices2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Global Software Development (GSD) is an emerging trend in today's software world in which teams are geographically dispersed, either in close proximity or globally. GSD provides certain advantages to development companies like low development cost, access to cheap and skilled labour etc. This type of development is noted as a more risky and challenging as compared to projects developed with teams under same roof. Inherently the nature of GSD projects are cooperative in which many software developers work on a common project, share information and coordinate activities. Coordination is a fundamental part of software development. GSD comprises different types of development systems i.e. insourcing, outsourcing, nearshoring, or farshoring, whatever the types of development systems selected by a company there exist the challenges to coordination. Therefore the knowledge of potential challenges, associated threats to coordination and practices to mitigate them plays a vital role for running a successful global project.

CUSTOMERS’ ADOPTION BEHAVIOUR IN INTERNET BANKING: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF GHANA AND SWEDEN2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Internet banking has now become a global phenomenon. It is the fastest growing service that banks can offer in order to gain and retain new customers. However, the issue of adoption behaviour or pattern by final consumers seems to be a pivotal issue in the successful implementation of Internet banking which has benefited people from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and from country to country. In some countries, Internet banking has proven to be very reliable, effective and efficient whilst in some others, they are found to be extremely dormant due to adoption behaviour. This study therefore tried to investigate if there are differences in Internet banking adoption behaviour between Ghana and Sweden. One bank each from Ghana and Sweden was selected for this study. The study employed the theory of the Extended Technology Acceptance Model by Davis and Venkatesh (2000). This model looks at the individual Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use and Psychological Attachment of adoption. These three parameters of the theory lead to Behavioural Intention which has a positive correlation with actual usage. The study was based on both qualitative and quantitative approaches and questionnaires were administered to some selected Internet banking customers of the two banks using purposive sampling technique. In the same vein, one banking staff each from the two banks knowledgeable in the Internet banking system of their banks was interviewed. The study concludes that there is only a marginal or subtle difference in the adoption behaviour in Internet banking between Ghana and Sweden and that the low patronage of Internet banking in Ghana as compared to that of Sweden is due to reasons other than customers’ adoption behaviour.

The Challenges faced by Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Obtaining Credit in Ghana.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study, The Challenges faced by Small and Medium Enterprises in Obtaining Credit in Ghana, was undertaken to highlight the issues facing SMEs in Ghana in their quest to accessing bank credit (loans) from financial institutions (banks & non– banks) to undertake various activities; be it general business operations or carrying out expansion project all in the name of fulfilling the objectives as being job creators and helping to reduce poverty. In tackling this topic, the quantitative approach was adopted. Questionnaires were circulated to 80 SMEs in the Accra and Tema metropolis selected through a technique of convenience sampling. Based on the responses received through these questionnaires, the following major findings came to the fore. There are institutions such as bank and non-bank financial institutions that are willing to provide funds to SMEs but Ghanaian SMEs are not able to meet the requirements of these financial institutions. Chief among these requirements is the issue of collateral, which most SMEs cannot provide. Aside this is the other issue of small equity base of these SMEs among others. Secondly, those who are able to access this credit are also faced with high interest rates and short repayment periods making it very difficult to embark on any developmental or expansion projects. Another interesting revelation with regards to the high rate of defaults in repayment of loans contracted, relates to the tight Cash flow situations of these SMEs that is mostly due to difficulties in the management of the account receivables of the respective SMEs surveyed. The study concludes with some recommendations to help free up capital or credit to the SME sector. Among the recommendations are encouraging financial institutions (banks & non-banks) to establish factoring services, enforcement of the credit reporting act and finally provision of tax incentives for banks that lend to SMEs to encourage others to do same.

    Abstract [en]

To make use of animation and audio as a media to convey a sense of change, was an important aspect when we chose to focus on urbanisation. It is an opportunity that allows the participants to discuss how influenceable we are to the sounds we hear in our surroundings. This bachelor thesis aims to demonstrate and educate about the effects and impact of urbanisation on humans and their well-being. In order to achieve a result, we created an audiovisual interactive installation that will portray the changes that have taken place over a period of 100 years, from the early 1900s into the 2000s. Factors such as urbanization, mental health, audio and images will be treated in-depth in what way they affect human well-being in urban areas. It gave us the knowledge to understand the historical value of the use of sound and images to be able to convey our message, with the cooperation of Blekingearkivet. We chose to start with Nina Hällgrens theories about how we can create auditory sustainable urban environments in order to understand how influenceable we are by noise. Yvonne Eriksson and Anette Göthlund gave us the tools to appreciate the importance of the visual expression. In the survey, we have used methods and techniques specifically suited to support to and complete the design process that has been made.

    Abstract [en]

This master thesis is part of a larger project (Evochip), conducted at Lund University, faculty of engineering, Industrial Production Department (iProd). The project is in collaboration with AB Markaryds metallarmatur and Mistra innovation. In this work, a dynamic cost model has been developed to calculate the manufacturing costs of components made from recycled chips of lead-free brass from the manufacturing processes of AB Markaryds metallarmatur (MMA).

In the current situation, all rejected details and waste materials are sent to the material supplier in southern Europe for recycling. The transport takes place by trucks and the recycling process is based on an energy-intensive melting step. Development projects are currently underway to reuse the chips without melting at sight at MMA´s facilities, but the cost per detail has been unknown for the company. With the help of this thesis, the manufacturing price will be presented. The manufacturing process is divided into a total of 11 different processing stations. To estimate the costs, Jan-Eric Ståhl's dynamic cost model is used. Necessary data and information have been collected using interviews with the employees of the company and through the company's own documentation regarding the production lines. In order to reduce the error margin in the results, suitable Monte Carlo simulations have been performed.

The work is also based on a sustainability perspective. In addition to eliminating transportations by trucks and energy-intensive melting processes for the products, the work also promotes the use and reuse of lead-free brass by pressing metal chips to form new bars. All this in order to avoid leaded brass components due to the negative health effects caused by the lead.

The component investigated in this work is a radiator valve called EVO 10. The valve is found in the company's lead-free standard range. The cost model in this project is dynamic to the extent that it could be applied in the future to other lead-free brass components at MMA.

A comparison of two different concepts is presented in the results section. Concept one represents the current manufacturing system, and concept two, the future compacting technology. Since many of the processing steps are the same for both systems, a comparison was made between the productions of the pellet through the two different concepts. The results show that pellets made according to today's manufacturing system cost 12.75 SEK / detail, and pellets manufactured according to concept two costs 9.61 SEK / detail.

As concept two is dependent on chips from today's manufacturing system, MMA cannot completely switch to compacting chips to new pellets. More work must be done to find a balanced model between the two different manufacturing systems for the best possible results. The results from the Monte Carlo-simulations shows that the manufacturing cost with the chosen parameters and variables is 12.96 SEK/detail.

Energy Strategies towards Sustainability: a comparative analysis of community energy plans from Sweden and Canada2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines community energy planning in Sweden and Canada with the aim of revealing strategies that move communities towards energy sustainability. Unsustainable energy activities are identified as major threats on both local and global levels. The challenges for energy systems are discussed and a possible scenario of a future community with sustainable energy production and consumption is presented. The literature review examines community energy planning guidebooks and key theoretical and methodological concepts including ingenuity, soft energy paths and backcasting from socio-ecological principles of sustainability. Following an analysis of energy supply and demand in a broad systems context, and a review of policies and programs supporting or hindering community energy planning, energy plans from eleven Swedish and eleven Canadian communities are evaluated. Characteristics of progressive energy planning as uncovered in the literature review form a framework for evaluating the visions, strategies and actions described in the plans. Sweden is recognized as an early player in community energy planning. Although Swedish energy plans do not contain all of the identified progressive strategies, national leadership and funding have played a role in Sweden’s successes. More recent Canadian plans are found to be highly progressive, suggesting that Canadian communities who follow their plans can too be successful in transforming their energy systems towards sustainability.

The impact of the Audit Commission on the management control systems of local authorities: The case of London Borough of Lambeth2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This case study uses qualitative and quantitative analyses to examine the impact of the annual audits undertaken by the Audit Commission (hereafter the AC) at London Borough of Lambeth (LBL) on its management control system (MCS). The analysis reviews the audits undertaken between the years 2000 and 2010 and analyses the management reaction to these results to identify the impact on MCS. The objective of the research was achieved by developing research questions which served as a research framework. The study focused primarily on three research questions: (1) have the audit scores of the AC influenced MCSs at LBL?; (2) how has the audit scores of the annual audits completed by the AC influenced the MCS of LBL?; and (3) why has the audit scores of the annual audits completed by the AC influenced MCS at LBL?. The theoretical framework used in this study focused on three bodies of literature: the work of the Audit Commission, auditing and audits scores, and MCSs. The thesis used content analysis to analyse LBL’s submissions; audit results and recommendations; and improvement plans. Data for the analysis were collected via documentation, archival records, interviews, and direct and participant observation. As a local government authority, LBL receives most of its annual finance from central government to deliver services to local residents and businesses. As a result the central government, through the AC, audits them every year to ensure that they are effective and efficient with their resources. Between the years 2000 and 2004, LBL audit scores were one star out of possible four stars and this represented considerable risk to its continuous survival. It is worth noting that a council with more than three consecutive score of one star is classified as a failing organisation and that council is taken into ‘special measures’ – a situation where the central government takes administrative control of the council. The trend of audit scores at LBL had indicated the council needed to improve in the areas of: • Financial planning and monitoring; • Service performance improvement in areas such as cultural services; • Performance management processes; and • Use of resources and internal capabilities. After the audit recommendation of 2004, the council developed an improvement plan. This led to the implementation of the new financial control systems, performance management procedure and personnel control system. LBL’s performance measurement imitates the balanced scorecard approach developed by Kaplan and Norton (1992). The reactions at LBL are congruent with the findings of Asel (2009) which demonstrated that organisations with high perceived uncertainty are more likely to change their MCS. The research objectives limited the study scope which has opened opportunities for future research in local authorities such as: MCS as a package; the influence of other stakeholder; trade union contribution to MCS; and organisational leadership at local authorities. It is also worth noting that the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is in a consultation process with an intention to outsource the work of the AC with effect from 2012/13 audits (www.audit-commission.gov.uk).

    Abstract [en]

Professor Philippe Aghion is the 2016 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, consisting of 100,000 Euros and a statuette designed by the internationally renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles. He is one of the most influential researchers worldwide in economics in the last couple of decades. His research has advanced our understanding of the relationship between firm-level innovation, entry and exit on the one hand, and productivity and growth on the other. Aghion has thus accomplished to bridge theoretical macroeconomic growth models with a more complete and consistent microeconomic setting. He is one of the founding fathers of the pioneering and original contribution referred to as Schumpeterian growth theory. Philippe Aghion has not only contributed with more sophisticated theoretical models, but also provided empirical evidence regarding the importance of entrepreneurial endeavours for societal prosperity, thereby initiating a more nuanced policy discussion concerning the interdependencies between entrepreneurship, competition, wealth and growth.

For the Creative Problem-Solver: An Integrated Process of Design Thinking and Strategic Sustainable Development2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the dawn of humanity design has influenced human life. Today, facing the depletion of the socio-ecological system, increasing complex problems threaten humanity’s existence. Design has been a contributor to creating such problems, yet with appropriate tools can become a source for solutions. Design Thinking (DT) was identified as a possible approach that could contribute to Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD). The purpose of this thesis is to examine potential contributors and hindrances of the DT process with regards to SSD, and create a prototype for an integrated process that could help achieve more strategic and sustainable outcomes. With the use of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) as a lens to examine the above, along with interviews, Action Research and expert feedback, an integrated process was created. Results of the interviews and FSSD analysis helped shape two prototypes that were examined through the mentioned methods. It was indicated by participants of the Action Research and by experts that the prototype could help reach a strategic and sustainable outcome, and further refinement should be pursued. The final prototype is presented as part of the discussion, suggesting additional tools and actions that if included could create a possible Sustainable DT (SDT) process.

A Prevention Technique for DDoS Attacks in SDN using Ryu Controller Application2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Software Defined Networking (SDN) modernizes network control, offering streamlined management. However, its centralized structure makes it more vulnerable to distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, posing serious threats to network stability. This thesis explores the development of a DDoS attack prevention technique in SDN environments using the Ryu controller application. The research aims to address the vulnerabilities in SDN, particularly focusing on flooding and Internet Protocol (IP) spoofing attacks, which are a significant threat to network security. The study employs an experimental approach, utilizing tools like Mininet-VM (VirtualMachine), Oracle VM VirtualBox, and hping3 to simulate a virtual SDN environment and conduct DDoS attack scenarios. Key methodologies include packet sniffing and rule-based detection by integrating Snort IDS (Intrusion Detection System), which is critical for identifying and mitigating such attacks. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed prevention technique, highlighting the importance of proper configuration and integration of network security tools in SDN. This work contributes to enhancing the resilience of SDN architectures against DDoS attacks, offering insights into future developments in network security.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEADERSHIP STYLE AND EMPLOYEES' COMMITMENT: A STUDY OF GHANA OIL PALM DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT In today’s world, there is a lot of focus on the importance of leadership behavior and style to the operations of organizations and at the same time, organizations are struggling to attract and retain talented employees. Even though there are many factors that contribute to employee’s decision to either stay in an organization or not, the main aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between leadership style and skilled employees’ commitment. This research identified the leadership styles in Ghana Oil Palm Development Company Limited (G. O.P. D. C. Ltd) through ratings using the adapted Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, which was formulated from Bass and Avolio (1997), the Full Range Leadership Development Theory and rated the employees’ commitment using an adaptation of Meyer and Allen’s (1997) Three-Component Model of employee commitment. This was enhanced by using semi structured interview to explore the problem further. Eight leaders were rated high for transformational leadership behaviors, six transactional and one leader for laissez-faire. Their employee groups were identified with affective, normative and continuance commitments respectively. Other factors identified as contributing to the skilled employee’s decision to leave or remain in the organization included the stages of their working lives, perceived employment options and their sense of devotion to their organization and family commitments. Overall, findings from this study suggest that leadership behaviors do play important roles in determining commitment within an organization. However, the high turnover rate of skilled employees at GOPDC cannot be attributed only to the style of leadership in the organization. In conclusion, it can be said that leadership behaviours result in different levels of commitment among skilled employees. However, other factors also impact on the decision of skilled employees to either remain or leave an organization.

Key Success Factors in Business Intelligence2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Business Intelligence can bring critical capabilities to an organization, but the implementation of such capabilities is often plagued with problems and issues. Why is it that certain projects fail, while others succeed? The theoretical problem and the aim of this thesis is to identify the factors that are present in successful Business Intelligence projects and organize them into a framework of critical success factors. A survey was conducted during the spring of 2011 to collect primary data on Business Intelligence projects. It was directed to a number of different professionals operating in the Business Intelligence field in large enterprises, primarily located in Poland and primarily vendors, but given the similarity of Business Intelligence initiatives across countries and increasing globalization of large enterprises, the conclusions from this thesis may well have relevance and be applicable for projects conducted in other countries. Findings confirm that Business Intelligence projects are wrestling with both technological and nontechnological problems, but the non-technological problems are found to be harder to solve as well as more time consuming than their technological counterparts. The thesis also shows that critical success factors for Business Intelligence projects are different from success factors for IS projects in general and Business Intelligences projects have critical success factors that are unique to the subject matter. Major differences can be predominately found in the non-technological factors, such as the presence of a specific business need to be addressed by the project and a clear vision to guide the project. Results show that successful projects have specific factors present more frequently than nonsuccessful. Such factors with great differences are the type of project funding, business value provided by each iteration of the project and the alignment of the project to a strategic vision for Business Intelligence. Furthermore, the thesis provides a framework of critical success factors that, according to the results of the study, explains 61% of variability of success of projects. Given these findings, managers responsible for introducing Business Intelligence capabilities should focus on a number of non-technological factors to increase the likelihood of project success. Areas which should be given special attention are: making sure that the Business Intelligence solution is built with end users in mind, that the Business Intelligence solution is closely tied to company‟s strategic vision and that the project is properly scoped and prioritized to concentrate on best opportunities first. Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the problem of protecting cloud environments against targeted attacks, which have become a popular mean of gaining access to organization's confidential information and resources of cloud providers. Only in 2015 eleven targeted attacks have been discovered by Kaspersky Lab. One of them - Duqu2 - successfully attacked the Lab itself. In this context, security researchers show rising concern about protecting corporate networks and cloud infrastructure used by large organizations against such type of attacks. This article describes a possibility to apply a sandboxing method within a cloud environment to enforce security perimeter of the cloud.

    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the problem of incident response in clouds. A conventional incident response model is formulated to be used as a basement for the cloud incident response model. Minimization of incident handling time is considered as a key criterion of the proposed cloud incident response model that can be done at the expense of embedding infrastructure redundancy into the cloud infrastructure represented by Network and Security Controllers and introducing Security Domain for threat analysis and cloud forensics. These architectural changes are discussed and applied within the cloud incident response model. © 2016 IEEE.

Reinforcement Learning for Anti-Ransomware Testing2020In: 2020 IEEE East-West Design and Test Symposium, EWDTS 2020 - Proceedings, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. , 2020, article id 9225141Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we are going to verify the possibility to create a ransomware simulation that will use an arbitrary combination of known tactics and techniques to bypass an anti-malware defense. To verify this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment in which an agent was trained with the help of reinforcement learning to run the ransomware simulator in a way that can bypass anti-ransomware solution and encrypt the target files. The novelty of the proposed method lies in applying reinforcement learning to anti-ransomware testing that may help to identify weaknesses in the anti-ransomware defense and fix them before a real attack happens. © 2020 IEEE.

    Abstract [en]

This paper contains an analysis of the payload of the popular ransomware for Windows, Android, Linux, and MacOSX platforms. Namely, VaultCrypt (CrypVault), TeslaCrypt, NanoLocker, Trojan-Ransom.Linux.Cryptor, Android Simplelocker, OSX/KeRanger-A, WannaCry, Petya, NotPetya, Cerber, Spora, Serpent ransomware were put under the microscope. A set of characteristics was proposed to be used for the analysis. The purpose of the analysis is generalization of the collected data that describes behavior and design trends of modern ransomware. The objective is to suggest ransomware threat mitigation techniques based on the obtained information. The novelty of the paper is the analysis methodology based on the chosen set of 13 key characteristics that helps to determine similarities and differences thorough the list of ransomware put under analysis. Most of the ransomware samples presented were manually analyzed by the authors eliminating contradictions in descriptions of ransomware behavior published by different malware research laboratories through verification of the payload of the latest versions of ransomware. © 2017 IEEE.

An analysis of lockergoga ransomware2019In: 2019 IEEE East-West Design and Test Symposium, EWDTS 2019, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. , 2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper contains an analysis of the LockerGoga ransomware that was used in the range of targeted cyberattacks in the first half of 2019 against Norsk Hydra-A world top 5 aluminum manufacturer, as well as the US chemical enterprises Hexion, and Momentive-Those companies are only the tip of the iceberg that reported the attack to the public. The ransomware was executed by attackers from inside a corporate network to encrypt the data on enterprise servers and, thus, taking down the information control systems. The intruders asked for a ransom to release a master key and decryption tool that can be used to decrypt the affected files. The purpose of the analysis is to find out tactics and techniques used by the LockerGoga ransomware during the cryptolocker attack as well as an encryption model to answer the question if the encrypted files can be decrypted with or without paying a ransom. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in an analysis methodology that is based on various reverse engineering techniques such as multi-process debugging and using open source code of a cryptographic library to find out a ransomware encryption model. © 2019 IEEE.
