Q: A closer look at groups and technology in queuing2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is the result of a project done on the subject of queuing, looking mainly at the behavior of the people doing it and relating it to the context they are in. The focus is on the notion that queues are not only made up of individuals but also groups, a notion that has previously been overlooked in studies of queues. This thesis is based on ethnographic studies and is strongly related to design of technology for supporting queuing situations. The main focus in the design is on supporting groups, flexibility and mobility in queues.

The Challenge of Designing Gestures for Interaction2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main interfaces for interaction with computers today are; keyboard, mouse and remote control. In order to interact with the presentation software Power Point, the presenter has to focus either on the computer or the buttons on the remote control. By doing this, the presenter often loses the contact with his audience and his or her flow of speech gets interrupted. This project has researched the possibility of using gestures for interaction with Power Point, by using an appliance that detects gestures. The purpose was that the interaction should be possible to realise by software, which we have done an introductory design of. We have focused on assisting presenters when they use Power Point and other applications when delivering presentation. To collect data and get an understanding of presenters, presentations and gestures we have observed presenters in action, done workshops together with future users and tested some gestures in real life. These are methods inspired from approaches such as ethnographic fieldwork and participatory design. During the whole project we have used video recording to collect and save data. To create an understanding and clear picture of what the future software should include UML-diagrams were used. We have separated gestures in two categories; natural and designed. The natural gestures occur naturally during speech and social interaction, while the designed gestures are gestures that you learn to use and express, often to perform a task. We discovered that it was the designed gestures that are best suited for gestural interaction with computer. Since the designed gestures are close to the natural way of gesturing we see them as easier to learn, remember and also more comfortable to use. We think the designed gestures have the potential to become second nature, therefore they are good to use for interaction with computers. Our research work led us to realise a need for an on/off function, to distinguish the designed gestures from the natural ones. By using a gestural interface during a presentation, the presenters can keep the focus on the audience and the message they want to convey. When gestural interfaces become reality they will introduce a paradigm shift in the way that people interact with computers and information.

Comparison of Interactive Group and Bilateral Communication for Idea Synthesis for Software Product Innovation2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: Organizations generate a number of solutions or ideas for a problem, by then select and synthesize some of these ideas for further development. Idea synthesis as an important phase of innovation process causes a reduction of enormous ideas to be considered by an interested company. Accordingly, innovation process can benefit from integration of ideas with restricted perspectives. Idea synthesis is effective when the defined product is novel, has high impact, is of low cost, and has good support from stakeholders. Idea synthesis is facilitated by the used of variety of structures. Interactive groups which require physical meeting of the participants are a facilitated forum for idea synthesis, where organizations try to utilize the multiple perspectives of groups. An alternative to this approach is bilateral communication between potential innovators. Bilateral communication is used by innovators that network with each other to identify related ideas and technologies in the context of open innovation. Software not only enables interactive groups and bilateral communication but also amplifies the performance of these structures by replacing them with online workshops or social networking. While both these structures are performed and justified through the use of software, it is not clear which of these structures is more effective. Objectives: The aim behind conducting this research is to compare the effectiveness of interactive groups and bilateral communication for idea synthesis. Additionally, besides the factors that affect achieving an agreement among the group members in both structures, a consistent pattern of idea synthesizing can be identified through the observation of participants’ behaviors,. Methods: In this study two research methodologies were used; a controlled experiment and a multiple-case study. First, an experiment was conducted to compare the effectiveness of idea synthesis of interactive group and bilateral communication channel for software product innovation. A total of 78 software engineering students generated software based solutions for a problem individually and subsequently combined their ideas to improve their initial solutions, either through the interactive groups or bilateral communication. Second, a multiple-case study using the collected data from the participants’ chat and questionnaires was conducted to identify the consistent pattern of idea synthesizing and the factors that affect achieving an agreement among the group members in both structures. Results: Statistical analyses of experimental results show no difference between interactive group and bilateral communication channels significantly for idea synthesis. It was found that the groups in bilateral communication channels could not generate more effective ideas than interactive groups in terms of novelty, feasibility, impact value, and stakeholder support through the ideas synthesizing. The identified factors which influence agreement among the group members, both challenges and determinants, in interactive groups and bilateral communication channels are categorized separately. Barriers in achieving an agreement between participants are included in context of ideas and participants’ interests in bilateral communication, while the barriers in interactive groups are features of ideas and participants’ features. Moreover, an agreement between participants is yielded in context of ideas and participants’ features in bilateral communication, while the agreement in interactive groups is yielded in context of ideas and participants’ interests. Conclusions: We conclude that there is no difference between interactive groups and bilateral communication for idea synthesis. The solutions achieved through both structures are not significantly different in terms of novelty, feasibility, impact value and stakeholder support. Moreover, achievement of an agreement in both structures not only depends on the context and features of ideas but also features of participants. On the one hand, the presence of ideas with consistent context and features besides motivated participants, interested in performing the idea synthesizing, lead to achieving an agreement. On the other hand, ideas with inconsistent context and features, lack of participants’ interest in sharing and synthesizing idea, lack of communicating, and lack of time managing hinder achieving to an agreement.

Utvecklandet av nästa generations DIM (Drivers Information Module)2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor?s Thesis concerns 20 points at the MDA educational program (People, Computers and Work) at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Ronneby. The MDA educational program focuses on how people use Information Technology and its design and development. Volvo Car Corporation is looking at the future possibilities of their development of their Drivers Information Module, DIM . Today all their instruments are analogical and as time go by, new features are added in the car. This overflow of instruments and information is more likely to confuse the driver than to assist him. Instead Volvo wants to focus on showing only the relevant information for the driver. So Volvo is designing a new Drivers Information Module, which works like a computer monitor. This gives a new perspective on how to show information for the driver. Our goal in this project is to give ideas on how the information can be displayed in this new version of the DIM and in what situations.

Krav på kraven: Varför kravspecifikationer inte uppdateras och vad det kan ge för konsekvenser2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Produktionseffektivisering av asfaltsvältar2017Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 12 credits / 18 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the project was to streamline a bottleneck station on Dynapac's mounting line of rollers. Dynapac manufactures rollers for different types of groundwork.

A roller is a machine consisting of one or two rollers that vibrates and pack the groundwork on which it drives, for example asphalt. The result of the work involves production efficiency of Dynapac's production flow.

Dynapac finds that the station where you interconnect the rollers to each other is a bottleneck for the flow. The reason for this is because the interconnection occurs next to the line on a specific mounting table, resulting in many unnecessary lifts is needed. In order to minimize time as much as possible, a new method of interconnection is required. Different concepts are developed and then each concept is scored where the concept with highest points is chosen for further development.

When developing the different concepts, consideration is given to the requirement specification that we have developed together with Dynapac. Dynapac protects the health of the employees, which means that there is a lot of focus on safety and ergonomics when developing the new assembly method.

The report also includes a brief description of Scania in Oskarshamn and their assembly of truck cabins. This is a company where assembly takes place in a similar way to Dynapac and a comparison of the companies is made.Strength calculations and drawings for the chosen concept are made and the drawings are included in the annexes.

The Invisible Interface of the check-in process: and its importance for the use of Self Service Units2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

When a computerized artefact is introduced as a tool in an activity it is not possible to only consider the design of this tool to understand the actual use of it. It is also necessary to study the context in which it is used and to rig the environment to support the use of this tool. This I have tried to show in this master thesis where I have studied how travellers behave in the check-in process, using or not using Self Service units for check-in at airports in Sweden and Norway.

    Abstract [sv]

Improving Time Management in the PDA: A Design Suggestion2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Many of those who buy a PDA today do it for the purpose of time management. The PDA is meant to replace other artifacts like paper diaries and notebooks but in practice the PDA cannot be used as the sole resource for time management. We think that to succeed in making time management with a PDA more useful the design has to be grounded in an understanding of the existing technology and how it is used in practice. We achieved this understanding of the time management with a PDA by conducting an ethnographical study to find out how the PDA is used in practice, making a technical investigation of the PDA and cooperated with the PDA users throughout the design process. In this thesis we describe our design suggestion that improves the applications for time management in the PDA and take it a step closer to be the replacement for other time management artifacts that the users wanted.

Betydelsen av kompetensutveckling inom olika verksamheter2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to create understanding for the meaning of competence development so the operation can change. Finding needs of competence development and compare their correspondence with the operation’s goals can be a start of right competence on the right place. An operation’s change depends on its use of different competences. Evaluating might be a chance for the operation to estimate their way towards changing The study is based on the hermeneutic tradition since my interest is to study the meaning in competence development and create understanding. By using interview, the interviewee can tell about their different experiences. In this study has six interviews been made with people who works with competence development in six different operations. The opportunity to make changes depends on their work with finding needs of competence, tries to fill them and which result they try to attain. The result of competence development is the co-workers responsibility though they have the will and ability to take action to develop competence. The result appear that strategic work with competence development, the different investment in competence development and their meaning for the operation is a question of matter for what can be changed and how operations can meet changes.

    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Cloudmetoden, spelproduktion, projektmetod, alternativ, digitala medier. This text will describe the planning and development of a new kind of working method we call The Cloud Method , which is suited for smaller teams who develop some kind of Digital Media. (In our case, video games). It will contain descriptions on what kind of problems that made us choose to create our own method of working instead of using one that already exists. We will discuss and compare our method of working with the other methods we have examined in order to show you how we made ours the way it is. We will mention the products we have created using our method and describe how it was to work with them, and describe what kind of facts and thoughts we stumbled upon.

    Abstract [en]

E-mail is a non-verbal text based communication tool that today is used widely in organizations and perhaps because of its familiarity seen as just a tool with no complications. Can other ingredients affect the communication except the obvious missing non-verbal cues? The main purpose of this thesis was to examine how leaders experience their communication between the different public administrations, but also to see if the text based communication, in particular e-mail, and was affected by organizational culture and emotions. Both a questionnaire, interviews and document analysis was used at a “Samordningsförbund” where the study was performed. The results indicated in general good communication between the individuals but also that emotions, personality and organizational culture can have an effect on communication and thus should be taken a more serious interest both in the actual “samordningsförbund” and also in further research, particularly e-mail in association with emotions and different personalities.

    Abstract [en]

There are many attempts to bridge paper digital gap, new artifacts and tools are being delivered continuously. Many of these artifacts work with paper and cooperate with other artifacts. Despite the fact that these artifacts are good enough to perform their work, they tend to be dull in exchanging data and cooperating with other artifacts. This causes a problem especially when artifact cooperation is essential. In order to solve this we need to have a standard to present the data used in the artifacts and facilitate communication among artifacts. Paper Digital Classes is a new standard that aims at providing a standard implementation of the artifacts in matters of data exchange and interoperability. PDC has a direct industrial impact, this was noticed by Sparbanksstiftelsen Kronan and they have awarded me a scholarship for the project.

Lönesättande samtal: samspelet mellan medarbetare och ledare2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The backgrounds of this study are my own thoughts on how the salary negotiation discussions in the workplace really work because they now have become common in the workplace. The purpose of this study is to investigate how communication is handled during a salary negotiation discussion, for both employees and managers and to develop awareness of the importance of communication influence on the interaction in the salary negotiation discussion. The research question has been how employees and managers perceive the interactions during the conversation, so the socio-cultural theory has been used together with other communication concepts and theories. The study had a phenomenological approach to obtain the respondents’ subjective experiences of the interaction in the salary negotiation discussions. The method which was used was an open interview with an interview guide which contained a number of different themes that the respondents had to relate to. The different themes were verbal communication, nonverbal communication, feedback, greeting and feelings. The results showed that there was an interaction, but also that it is important to have developed concepts that facilitate conversations and interactions.

HOW TO DEFINE A SUSTAINABILITY DESIGN SPACE2015In: Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED). Milan, Italy, July 27-30, 2015., DESIGN SOC, UNIV STRATHCLYDE , 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In order for a company to define a sustainability design space and become more sustainable it must know: what sustainability means; how sustainability can be achieved; and, how sustainability can be measured.

The main contribution of this paper is an approach to define the design space for sustainability, with purpose to give support in the early product innovation process. A novel approach is presented for how to identify strategic sustainability criteria, tactical design guidelines and sustainability compliance index that are important parts of a sustainability design space. A case company within the aerospace industry has been chosen to test and validate the sustainability criteria and how it can give support in evaluating the current sustainability profile of a product component by using the suggested Sustainability Compliance Index (SCI).

The result from company feedback and early pilot-testing showed that the sustainability criteria and sustainability compliance index can give support in decisions regarding sustainability perspective in early concept development. The pilot-tests also indicated that there is a need for further development and validation.

Sustainability criteria and sustainability compliance index for decision support in product development2017In: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 140, no Part 1, p. 251-266Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainability criteria used for decision support in the product innovation process and aligned throughout the design process is one key element to efficiently introduce a sustainability perspective early in product development. The aim of this paper is to present an approach for identifying such sustainability criteria and to suggest a process for how these can be developed in any manufacturing company. The sustainability criteria are presented in a set of matrices, separating the criteria into product life-cycle phases and socio-ecological sustainability principles. In addition the paper presents a qualitative measurement scale for the criteria, called a sustainability compliance index that indicates to what degree a product or process concept performs in relation to a sustainable solution. The sustainability criteria were tested in different settings at a case company within the aerospace industry to give a first indication and evaluation of the ability to give guidance and support in bringing in a sustainability perspective when developing, evaluating and selecting different concepts in the early phases of product development.

User Driven Software Development in a Small Company2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Field studies, interviews and participative observations have been the main methods in this master thesis where the author has studied, and partially participated, in the development process of a booking system called FRI. Idavall is the small company that develops this suc-cessful software despite small resources. Characteristic for Idavall is in the way they manage to involve their about 1300 users in the development process. The development process is highly flexible which is required when rapidly changes are common. The overall question in this thesis is: How do Idavall manage to develop this software in a flexible way and successfully involve their users in the development process? Idavall arranges FRI-meetings, courses and demonstrations where users meet each other and a representative from Idavall. All participants discuss FRI and have the opportunity to propose changes, improvements and report bugs. One of the most important parts of the busi-ness idea of Idavall is to offer a proper, friendly and professional support. The support is one of the most important possibilities to be informed about the users? needs, wishes and propos-als. This, what I called, user driven development has a lot of common with Participatory De-sign (PD) where users participate in the design of new software. PD implies that users of software should take part in decisions that affect the system and the way it is used and de-signed. Idavall make use of a kind of Customer Relationship Management (CRM), which is a concept used in the marketing arena. The objective of CRM is to create a strong, mutual and trustful relationship between supplier and customer. By using CRM in combination with PD it is possible to enhance the user participation and enable user driven development. The company has a flexible development process, which is built on an informal way of driving the process. Informal meetings are common where decisions about changes and im-provements are taken quickly. New versions are delivered about 20 times a year. The employ-ees meet several times a day in the central located coffee room and discuss problems. The development process has a lot of common with Extreme Programming (XP), which is a software development methodology that aims to make software development more flexi-ble and focus on highly flexible environments with quickly changing requirements. XP is de-scribed briefly and comparisons are made to the development process of FRI as well as short-comings of XP in the context of PD.

    Abstract [en]

Computer supported collaborative learning, CSCL, is a relatively new focus for research within Instructional technology. It focuses on the process of learning in a computer supported collaborative environment. In this report I will use a model for designing effective learning-environments, called Cognitive Apprenticeship to highlight areas of importance when arranging CSCL-environments. Cognitive apprenticeship is an attempt to combine apprenticeships and in-school-work. It focuses on the facilitation of development of theoretical and practical skills in an in-school-setting. But even though the model has been described as successful, there are some drawbacks. Different conditions for school and work makes it difficult to transfer the successful apprenticeship-model to an in-school-setting.

Requesting Utility in Usability -Perspectives from a large team software engineering project2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Many companies invest large amount of money in developing new technology, without knowing how it will be used. To succeed in making these technologies useful it is necessary to understand the context that gives meaning to the artifact. In the case of generic products, especially in new domains, the context is not obvious. This bachelor thesis analyses what Usability Engineering, Participatory Design and Ethnography can contribute to the problem of learning about the context of usage for generic artifacts. Understanding and identifying details of context is considered to be important to achieve usability in software development. The experience is that most recommendations on usability methods concern situations of specific users in a specific context. In order to find important aspects of the real-world use of generic products, we suggest that ethnographic studies can be conducted in contexts where behaviors relevant to the design are thought to be found. The problem of not knowing the context was experienced in usability work practiced in a large software engineering project. The project task was to develop a web browser for Symbian's ?Quartz? reference design for handheld devices. Methods used were taken from participatory design and usability engineering.

Applying Interaction Design: A matter of working out guidelines in the design2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Working in a software project is a challenge. People with different backgrounds are together working towards the goal of delivering a run able piece of software. As the development proceeds, different guidelines such as: Technology, quality directives, user goals, customer goals, style guides etc. will influence the design. This report will focus on the design of the graphical user interface and discuss how it benefits from making the guidelines explicit in the design process. Today it is identified that interaction design has a problem of reaching practical use in software industry. This thesis will present an approach to interaction design that can be used in practice in the complex nature of software development. The approach stresses the importance of not having only one perspective on design. A design group needs to have more than the end user’s perspective when developing an interactive product. In order to fit reality and fulfill user goals in the design, it is important to make the design process and its guidelines explicit to the developers. During this spring I have been involved in a large software engineering project, developing the interface design of an instant messaging application. In this Master thesis, I will explain how I developed my approach to interaction design in the organization of a project. I will also describe my experiences of working with the method of persona in order to make the user goals explicit in the design. The main purpose of this report is to show a practical way of working with interface design. The work resulted in traceability of design decisions, which was not the goal of this project, merely the result of an approach to design.

    Abstract [sv]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Companies that strive for implementing a more holistic sustainability perspective, i.e. a socio-ecological sustainability perspective with a system view, need to recognize the integration ofsustainability methods into the product innovation process as a project in itself. To achieve thisan efficient method must be available to guide companies towards sustainable productdevelopment i.e. implementation of a strategic sustainability perspective in the early phases ofthe product innovation process, including a lifecycle thinking. To meet this challenge this thesisseeks to answer how a sustainability perspective can be integrated into product development to;facilliate a design team to identify critical areas in a products life cycle during the productinnovation process and with the help of sustainability methods guide the companies to a moresustainable future. The results is based on a literature study, interview- and workshops all conducted at a case-company were several barriers on why sustainability methods havn’t successfully been appliedwithin the companies were identified. The thesis identified the importance of having a morestructured and strategic product innovation process to enable a more holistic sustainabilitymindset within the company. The work contributed to a new product innovation process at thecase-company that allowed adapted sustainability methods to conveniently be integrated intothe working process. The process identified a handful of suitable sustainability methods thatfocus on the three sustainability dimensions (social, economic, ecological) to broaden thecompany’s understanding of sustainability. Selected methods were adapted, applied andvalidated at the case-company to ensure that they fulfilled their intended goals and can used toprovide a more holistic mindset and to identify hotspots in the product innovation process.

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses how an application for digital television with the purpose to switch between two channels was designed and the problems we have encountered during the design. Most of the problems concern the technology and the difficulties of reaching out to potential users. The main problem with the technology is that it is still not well developed and therefore we have been facing some technical constraints in our work. The main problems with user participation depends on the lack of interest from the users? side but also that we have been working under time pressure and therefore not been able to involve users as much as we wanted.

Att bryta isoleringen: sociala faktorer i nätbaserad distansutbildning2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Trends in business process quality management methodologies.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

People, process and IT are amongst the most important assets of any organization. Optimal utilization of these resources has been the question of research in business and academia for many decades. The business world have responded by inventing various methodologies that can be used for addressing problems of quality improvement, efficiency of processes, continuous improvement, reduction of waste, automation, strategy alignments etc. Some of these methodologies can be commonly called as Business Process Quality Management methodologies (BPQM). In essence, the first references to the process management can be traced back to Frederick Taylor and scientific management. Time and motion study was addressed to improvement of manufacturing process efficiency. The ideas of scientific management were in use for quite a long period until more advanced quality management techniques were developed in Japan and USA. One of the first prominent methods had been Total Quality Management (TQM) which evolved during 1980’s. About the same time, Six Sigma(SS) originated at Motorola as a separate method. SS spread and evolved; and later joined with ideas of Lean manufacturing to form Lean Six Sigma. In 1990’s due to emerging IT technologies, beginning of globalization, and strengthening of competition, companies recognized the need for better process and quality management. Business Process Management (BPM) emerged as a novel methodology that has taken all this into account and helped to align IT technologies with business processes and quality management. In this thesis we studied various aspects of above mentioned methods and identified their relations. An extensive amount of information exists on these methodologies and they have been commercialized by various consulting firms. However, a comprehensive understanding of what these methodologies can do and deliver is missing. Purpose of the thesis is to study these three related methods in business process quality management; identify their relation to each other and how they have developed. An extensive literature review has been done prior to data collection to understand theory behind each methodology. Research data was collected by studying existing case studies describing implementation of above mentioned methodologies. Below are some of our key findings • BPQM methodologies evolved with time either by becoming more focused or through better integration of people and Information Systems • Processes are key for operations of any organizations. Processes need to controlled and developed over time. As BPQM methodologies evolved, they became more process centric. • Quality can be achieved as outcome through increasing process performance. Quality and processes are very closely linked to each other. It is impossible to expect high quality end-results without understanding what needs to be done to get a desirable output from various inputs. • Management support is vital for any BPQM methodology implementation. • Modern organizations are result oriented. Therefore the choice of BPQM methodologies is heavily influenced by their ability to improve bottom line performance.

    Abstract [sv]

Abstract In this report I describe the Health Care Advice Bureau?s (sjukvårdsrådgivningen) historical background, proposals for its development according to a committee from the Blekinge County Council (Landstinget Blekinge), the Health Care Advice Bureau?s cooperation with different external operators e.g. the SOS and the Care Centers [Vårdcentraler]. I account for how I, in the same county council, aided by ethnographical methods observed or investigated the following: The nurses? interaction with the patients, the nurses? interaction among themselves, the nurses? participation in the development of the system and also the computer based system?s technical qualifications. The report describes and analyses a computer based system as a welcomed change in information ecology. The Health Care Advice Bureau constitutes an information ecology that involves a group of people and technologies which are both focused on placing the patients on the right care level. Other terms that I have used are communication wherein ´storage technology´ and ´transportation technology´ are being used as two different communication technologies. At the end I will round it off by presenting my own views and opinions on the Health Care Advice Bureau.

    Abstract [sv]

Studenternas psykosociala arbetsmiljö-Jämförelse i arbetsform2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: psykosocial arbetsmiljö, stress, skillnader i arbetsform, studenter

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The number of volunteers is increasing and therefore the voluntary leader/leaders in non-profit organizations have more demands to live up to. My understanding is that leaders in non-profit organizations should be aware of, and take care of the volunteers, motivate, “keep the flame up” and support “the driving spirits”. There is not much written about how voluntary leader/leaders of the Red Cross lead there volunteers, therefore the purpose of the study is to illustrate how the leaders of a non-profit organization, the Red Cross, “lead” the volunteers and how the leaders consider their leadership. In the background, I have described the non-profit organizations and related this to the community as well as to the individual level. The state has reduced its commitment, therefore the non-profit organizations, with the purpose of improving the community, have taken over a number of areas and tasks. On an individual level it means that those individuals who work voluntarily have strength of power to help people in vulnerable situations. They will lend a hand with the knowledge and experience they have. For that reason it is important to demonstrate this phenomenon, because volunteers are only volunteers, they should feel that they are appreciated, valued and that they are needed. However, it is important how the voluntary leader/leaders go on to lead the volunteers in order to engage, motivate, support and so forth. I have chosen the qualitative method to bring light to the purpose of the study. I have interviewed eight voluntary leader/leaders from the Red Cross. The selection was made with help from a Coordinator/Consultant at the local Red Cross office. My intention with the qualitative interviews is to reproduce my informers’ opinion, that is how they “lead” the volunteers, but also to see how they regard their leadership. The result emphasizes the importance of the role that voluntary leaders have, but also the value of how they engage, motivate and retain volunteers. The result certifies that voluntary leaders are aware of the importance of how they should treat their volunteers. It means that the work and the tasks they perform is valued and appreciated. At the same time, the volunteers take responsibility and initiative, which is required, for the tasks and work, while the voluntary leader is there to show appreciation, support, motivate, stimulate, encourage, make the volunteers feel visible and fill them with enthusiasm. On the other hand, if the volunteers feel that they are not appreciated or needed, their voluntary work can feel meaningless. The commitment is therefore central, because if there were not any volunteers, “driving spirits”, the voluntary leaders would not be needed.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study was to reach a better understanding of voluntary work and its possible influence on the work role. Based on a phenomenological approach, five voluntary workers from the leisure field were interviewed. The interpretation of the empirical data was based on the Humanistic psychology and its theories about personality, self-realization, motivation and emotion. The results show that the motive behind the voluntary engagement varied amongst the participants and all of them stated more than one motive. However, social motives, wanting to learn more and develop their skills and also wanting to help others, were the most frequent motives among the participants. In the light of the theoretical background for this study, these motives can be understood as being due to the need of self-realization and appreciation from others, and also a wish to reach an ideal self. Existential angst could also lie behind the participants tendency to take on responsibilities and also their general need of control in their lives. The results also showed that for the participants, the voluntary engagement had significance for other roles in life, such as the work role. All participants stated that they had found their acquired knowledge and experiences from the voluntary work useful in their daily jobs. Materialhantering inom tillverkningsindustri2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 12 credits / 18 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

In my study I have participated at the Fifth Dimension / Active Worlds site in Villa Gymnastiken in Ronneby, where I have worked both as an assistant to the project leader and as a researcher, but also as a participant together with the children. The children are working in a virtual world called Femtedim, created in a internet-based program named Active Worlds Education Universe. The Femtedim-world are bridging together two physical worlds in Ronneby and Copenhagen. My main focus is on an intervention that occurred in the 12th of March when the research-team in Copenhagen, which runs the project in Denmark, decided to create a new challenge for the children since some of them started to get bored. They added gravitation to the Femtedim-world, which lead to a few different reactions among the children. Most of the children didn´t like it and were very hostile towards the idea that they would not be able to fly around freely in the Femtedim-world. Some children even refused to log on to the system at the beginning. The change have also resulted in a few popular contests and a hope that the children will cooperate and communicate more in the future.

Intranät En kommunikationskanal för alla?2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Intranet is today a common technical groupware to communicate in many organisations. People can interact through the Intranet and communicate within the organization and get relevant information according to their workplace. It can be difficult to get everybody to use the Intranet as an information- and communication tool. This causes problems when people want to reach out with information. With these thoughts we entered our work at Luftfartsverket at Arlanda airport. The main goal for us has been to find out how they reach out with information in a large company where there are many different employees with different work situations. We choose to be in a department where the computer is not used in their daily work situations. The reason for our choice of department was because the problem of information is most common where the computer is not used as a natural extension of their work situations. We have also focused on how the employees get information today, and which ways they appreciate the most. To find out the reasons why the Intranet is not used as much as the head of department wishes, we have used several qualitative methods such as interviews, mock-up, Future Workshop etc. From the reflections and results of our methods we have found several solutions on how the presentation of the information can be improved

How to merge virtual project room with a project management model2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Managing a project is multitasking. For making this easier, a project mangaer has a lot of tools. Two of the tools that are often used are a project management model and a virtual project room. These two can be of different types in different compaies and in different culutres. In this thesis, we investigate it there is any neeed for these two tools to be combined. If there is a need, how should the combination be done?

Applying Interaction Design in a Software Development Project: Working out the general user for Messaging Systems2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

It is a challenge to work in a software development project. People with different backgrounds are together working towards the goal of delivering a run able piece of software. The influences to the design are many and all of them will affect how the program will be designed. During this spring we have been involved in a large software engineering project. Our part of the project has been focusing on interface design and using the design method persona. In this bachelor thesis we describe our experiences of participating in a software development project. We will explain how our design work was affected by the organisation of the project and how we have worked with adjusting the method of persona to the conditions given in the project. We will also describe the importance of communicating the design within the project. The main purpose of the report is to show how we during the project have become aware of the importance of tracing design decisions back to its origin. Many attributes has come to inform our design and this has made us aware of the importance of having a traceability of our work.

Arbetstrivsel utan fast tillvaro i arbetslivet2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
