    Abstract [sv]

This project is a learning CD-ROM production aimed at first-time parents. It is using both sound and images, moving as well as non-moving. The purpose of the production is to be an interesting alternative to traditional books. We have been looking at similar productions like drivers license educational CD-ROMs and encyclopedias for inspiration and ideas on how to proceed. In order to give the content some dynamics, we've also added the element of 3D-animated sequences. The application is supposed to be run as a simple executable file with flash embedded. This will eliminate the need for third party software installation. The whole concept is to make the application as simple and as userfriendly as possible. In addition to the CD-ROM, we've also created a web site to help market the product and give our client the ability to update the content on their own. Future buyers of the product will also be able to order the CD-ROM via a form on the web site. This product has been created using vector based graphics through applications such as Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Flash MX. The 3D rendered sequences has been created using Alias Maya. The production has also been complemented with a speaker.

PILAR: A Federation of VISIR Remote Laboratory Systems for Educational Open Activities2018Inngår i: Proceedings of 2018 IEEE International Conference on Teaching, Assessment, and Learning for Engineering, TALE 2018, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. , 2018, s. 134-141Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Social demands have promoted an educational approach based on an 'anywhere and anytime' premise. Remote laboratories have emerged as the answer to the demands of technical educational areas for adapting themselves to this scenario. The result has not only benefit distance learning students but has provided new learning scenarios both for teachers and students as well as allowing a flexible approach to experimental topics. However, as any other solution for providing practical scenarios (hands-on labs, virtual labs or simulators), remote labs face several constraints inherited from the subsystems of its deployment - hardware (real instruments, equipment and scenario) and software (analog/digital conversions, communications, workbenches, etc.}. This paper describes the Erasmus+ project Platform Integration of Laboratories based on the Architecture of visiR (PILAR) which deals with several units of the federation installed in different educational institutions and devoted to analog electronics and electrical circuits. Based on the limitations of remote labs, the need for the federation will be justified and its benefits will be described by taking advantage of its strengths. The challenges that have come up during the different stages and the different approaches to design are also going to be described and analyzed. © 2018 IEEE.

Empirical Analysis of the Use of the VISIR Remote Lab in Teaching Analog Electronics2017Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Education, ISSN 0018-9359, E-ISSN 1557-9638, Vol. 60, nr 2, s. 149-156Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Remote laboratories give students the opportunity of experimenting in STEM by using the Internet to control and measure an experimental setting. Remote laboratories are increasingly used in the classroom to complement, or substitute for, hands-on laboratories, so it is important to know its learning value. While many authors approach this question through qualitative analyses, this paper reports a replicated quantitative study that evaluates the teaching performance of one of these resources, the virtual instrument systems in reality (VISIR) remote laboratory. VISIR, described here, is the most popular remote laboratory for basic analog electronics. This paper hypothesizes that use of a remote laboratory has a positive effect on students' learning process. This report analyzes the effect of the use of VISIR in five different groups of students from two different academic years (2013-2014 and 2014-2015), with three teachers and at two educational levels. The empirical experience focuses on Ohm's Law. The results obtained are reported using a pretest and post-test design. The tests were carefully designed and analyzed, and their reliability and validity were assessed. The analysis of knowledge test question results shows that the post-test scores are higher that the pretest. The difference is significant according to Wilcoxon test (p < 0.001), and produces a Cohen effect size of 1.0. The VISIR remote laboratory's positive effect on students' learning processes indicates that remote laboratories can produce a positive effect in students' learning if an appropriate activity is used.

Outcome analysis of a research-based didactic model for education to promote culturally competent nursing care in Sweden: a questionnaire study2008Inngår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 22, nr 3, s. 348-356Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Aims and objectives: To describe and analyse to what extent the goals of the education in promoting culturally competent nursing care have been achieved from a student perspective. B: As Sweden has transformed into a multicultural society over the past 50 years, there is a need to specify, at all levels of the nursing programme, transcultural concepts for the success of integration. A research-based didactic model was designed for the nursing programme at Malmö University and this was followed by investigations of its outcome. Method: The study is a prospective cohort study with an outcome analysis. A descriptive research study with a longitudinal design was performed, with the focus on Swedish nursing students´experiences of transcultural nursing knowledge and their attitudes before and after implementation of the didactic model. The students evaluate highly their competence to meet demands of multicultural health and medical service. Additionally, their ability to recognise and understand the consequences of international migration on health also received a high mean. Conclusions: The study revealed the knowledge and experience acquired by Swedish students in transcultural nursing. The assumption was that a visible development of knowledge should occurduring the three years of education. Interpreting the findings, such effectiveness can be found and hopefully the students will be able to give holistic nursing care based on a person's individual culture.

    Abstract [sv]

Information Literacy - Academic Literacy - participation Literacy: filosofin runt Bibliotek 2.02007Annet (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article examines some of the main points of recent library development, building on phenomena or concepts such as particpation, democracy, web 2.0, library 2.0 and convergence cultures. We start with two cases closely related to activities at Blekinge Institute of Technology. The first case is about building a community for national and international cooperation about learning objects in the setting of a search guide. The other case is about a project aming to bring our patrons into the discusson about the library and our future. Finally, we discuss the role of librarians in a world where knowledge processes go from a hierarchical, authoritative perspective to a participative, inclusive mindset.

    Searchguide 2.02007Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Blekinge Institute of Technology library has offered education in information seeking on campus and online and has developed web based tools for this which have received much attention1. The Quick Search Guide and The Search Guide are now used in all courses we offer at Blekinge Institute of Technology. The Quick Search Guide contains very basic information about searching and evaluation of sources. The Search Guide is both more extensive and deeper than The Quick Search Guide. But in the light of Web 2.0, The Search Guide’s lack of participation seemed outdated, in some respects, so we decided to rework it, and this time we were going to do it based on open source systems. From Consultants to Open Source When we decided to switch from a system tailored by a consulting firm to an open source system, we were confronted by a fairly large set of choices. One important decision was the question of which open source system was to be the base to work on. Another important question was about the community the system was supposed to serve. In our view the community was in focus, but the choice of system was also crucial since its job is to underpin the community. Our main directives when we looked for a system were that it had to be fairly light weight and based on standards. It was also important that it was based on the most common programming languages and software structures. But the most important aspect was interactivity and communication. One of the main points for switching software was the move from information publishing to communication, and that aspect had to set the stage for what kind of system we choose. Our choice was Wordpress, the largest weblog software in the world. It is a native communication system, and it meets all requirements we had. The Searchguide 2.0 community system comprises two Wordpress installations, a shared library/community of texts and learning objects, and a local customizable end user search guide. Agendas And finally, we want to point to the theoretical/philosophical agendas of the project. * we want to participate in the open source, open access movements. We think this is an important step for the whole community of learning professionals. * we want to collaborate around learning objects. * we also want to raise awareness and knowledge about lightweight, open source, web 2.0 systems. * in the process we hope to be able to communicate participation strategies which makes us wiser and better equipped for the future. * let users participate in the creation of content – in the local search guide. * Communicate library interaction strategies. A large part of the participating organizations will probably be libraries.

Betydelsen av kompetensutveckling inom olika verksamheter2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

A study in GUI aesthetics for modern pixel art games.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The clarity and usability of the graphical user interface is very important for the enjoyment of a digital game. Pixel art is an art style with low resolution consisting of a precise placing of pixels, the smallest unit of colour that a screen can display. Pixel art has the potential of being cheap, easy to make and nostalgic, but it takes some skill to handle. However the great weakness of pixel art is displaying letters, and small details with clarity. So is there a place for pixel art in modern games? This thesis will discuss how pixel art games could use their GUI and HUDs to create beautiful games without losing clarity. The aim of this study is to is to compare different games GUI in a systematic way and discuss whether the artists have succeeded in their design of the GUI to give the player a pleasant game experience. A second aim is to find a series of recommendations on how to build a GUI with the least possible intrusion on on a narrative driven game. The main question is how can the GUI be designed and drawn to fit a modern pixel art game without causing a distracting discord to the pixel art style?

Teaching International Students How to Avoid Plagiarism: Librarians and Faculty in Collaboration2014Inngår i: The journal of academic librarianship, ISSN 0099-1333, E-ISSN 1879-1999, Vol. 40, nr 3/4Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents how a plagiarism component has been integrated in a Research Methodology course for Engineering Master students at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden. The plagiarism issue was approached from an educational perspective, rather than a punitive. The course director and librarians developed this part of the course in close collaboration. One part of the course is dedicated to how to cite, paraphrase and reference, while another part stresses the legal and ethical aspects of research. Currently, the majority of the students are international, which means there are intercultural and language aspects to consider. In order to evaluate our approach to teaching about plagiarism, we conducted a survey. The results of the survey indicate a need for education on how to cite and reference properly in order to avoid plagiarism, a result which is also supported by students' assignment results. Some suggestions are given for future development of the course.

On objectives of instructional laboratories, individual assessment, and use of collaborative remote laboratories2009Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, ISSN 1939-1382, E-ISSN 1939-1382, Vol. 2, nr 4, s. 263-274Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Three key issues should be addressed to enable universities to deliver engineers who have a solid documented laboratory experience enabling them to design goods and services complying with the requirements of a sustainable society. First, introduce learning objectives of engineering instructional laboratories in courses including laboratory components. Second, implement individual student assessment. Third, introduce free access to online experimental resources as a supplement to the equipment in traditional laboratories. Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) in Sweden and the University of South Australia (UniSA) have created online laboratory workbenches for electrical experiments that mimic traditional ones by combining virtual and physical reality. Online workbenches not only supplement traditional ones, but they can also be used for low-cost individual assessment. BTH has started a project disseminating the BTH workbench concept, The Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR) Open Laboratory Platform, and invites other universities to set up replicas and participate in further development and standardization. Further, online workbenches offer additional learning possibilities. UniSA has started a project where students located in different countries can perform experiments together as a way to enhance the participants' intercultural competence. This paper discusses online laboratory workbenches and their role in an engineering education appropriate for a sustainable society.

    VISIR work in progress2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality) Open Lab Platform is an architecture that enable universities, secondary schools, and other organizations to open instructional laboratories for remote access with preserved context. VISIR emanates from a feasibility study made in 1999 at BTH (Blekinge Institute of Technology) in Sweden. Today, VISIR laboratories are online at seven universities globally where thousands of students can work and conduct most experiments that can be performed on a solderless breadboard remotely without any risk of being harmed. IAOE (International Association of Online Engineering has organized SIG VISIR a Special Interest Group for VISIR. Further development of the platform is carried out in this Community. This paper is about work in progress especially at BTH.

Integrating Sustainability and Innovation Through a Master's Program in Product-Service Systems2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The results of unsustainable product innovation are evident worldwide. Products and their usage contribute to global sustainability problems. Companies building competence in innovation for sustainability will therefore gain competitive advantages in the evolving sustainability-driven market at the same time as sustainability is a driving force for innovation. Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) has a research group that brings together competences with the unifying purpose of supporting industrial capacity for sustainable product-service system innovation. From this research, it is evident that there is a need for systems innovators who can help create leap frog solutions as well as make sure that incremental improvements fit into a viable strategy towards a sustainable society. Industry needs people who can manage the whole innovation process for sustainability, including need-finding, design, implementation through to remanufacturing. BTH is therefore offering a comprehensive master’s program to prepare people to be systems' innovators for sustainability. This programme is focused where sustainability, innovation and product-service systems (PSS) meet. Supporting areas such as leadership, management and entrepreneurship are also included. The two-year program will allow students to engage in front-edge research results and will be continuously developed in close collaboration with industry to develop a relevant profile for graduates. Students will be engaged in ongoing research projects and have industrial projects. Upon completion, students will have practical experience in using methods and tools that support sustainable product innovation, as well as have a thorough theoretical understanding as a basis for development of new supplementary methods and tools as necessary.

Abstract [en]

It is an unsettled issue between research traditions how we should negotiate the implied rather than acknowledged dispute between individual agency, i.e. the ability/need/urge of a manager to act on/in the world on the one hand and the functioning of a structured social system where management and employee initiatives, relations and reactions are crucial for the main activity. This chapter resolves parts of the debate by drawing on general activity theory and a digital tool deployed for facilitating job-related group interaction.

Contemporary Approaches to Activity Theory2014Annet (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The title of the book covers a variety of activities, environments, settings and contexts. The title also suggests a common theoretical-conceptual approach to contemporary cultural-historical activity theory. The topic fits the needs and abilities of modern man because of the impact of activity systems, globalization and cultural integration. More specifically the contents of the book unfold contemporary resources of collective endeavors. One reason for choosing a shared individual and collective theme is to learn about the impact of computer supported instrumentalism. The new technology poses a threat to traditionally acknowledged resources like co-ordination, cooperation and co-construction between people. So, there are cultural-historical experiences to share between people who use their ability to communicate as an impetus to systemic innovation of shared activities operating for the good of communities, societies and nations. From one point of view families, teams, orchestras, courts of law, hospitals etc. are self regulating human organizations. From another point of view – which the contents of this book suggest - many approaches to learning enable for “change agents” to support, co-ordinate, study, understand, re-design, manipulate and improve practices.

Analysis of the content area – democracy – and the object of study – values – enable a diagnosis-analysis-synthesis approach tohuman behaviour, primarily by means of textual criticism. Some of the studied articles are classified as demagogically symbolmanipulative items for highlighting the writer’s competence. Other articles are democratically actionable for developing research and education. It seems as if social science research often forms into mere talk for the Academy, but sometimes research also provides useful pieces of advice for the practitioner. A crucial divide runs between is-pragmatic and should-idealist approaches to knowledge. Successful articles portray actionable knowledgen and striving articles illustrate textual knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

A pilot study at a local school explores a virtual world during English lessons. The objective of applying a Vygotskian experimental design to the study is to investigate the potential of software, interaction and integration related to problem-solving defined as text composition in a foreign language. Focus of research and practices is on the development of a virtual didactic, more specifically text interaction by a virtual game in the classroom and face-to-face dialogue by direct speech-dialogue in the computer room. The two-fold objectives cover understanding an integrated didactic on English and computer efficacy . By investigating the design of a combined virtual and physical learning environment we describe how the video-game generation operates (in) a social system of peers as they develop their computer skills and text composing ability.

Högskolepedagogik: mål, innehåll, metod2012Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Different research traditions describe the implied rather than acknowledged dispute between individual agency and collective activity. The ability of an individual to take action has a positive effect on the functioning of a social system. Initiative is a praised self-controlled quality and inter-subjective relations between people and reactions to another person’s input are crucial for the main activity. I this chapter I draw on experiences of digital software deployed for facilitating teaching and learning.

Language Learning on a Digital Gaming Platform2006Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

It is important that schools provide the necessary tools for the students’ learning, be it books, tape recorders or computers. It is also important that schools adjust to the students’ needs and organise instruction, cooperation and self-guided work. Such ‘systems thinking’ about human behaviour have produced much innovative modelling and respectable instrumentation, but little empirical theory-testing. Rather than following a traditional division between abstract conceptualisation and pragmatic use in the analysis of media for language learning, this chapter introduces an experimental simulation-stimulation setting in Nordic schools, following a didactic design that explores opportunities for learning. The combination of technology and pre-designed social systems enables analysis of self-organisation, group control and adaptation to an interactive discourse for language learning.

    Abstract [en]

Culture and human development come together as one. Contradictions and challenges abound in the transformation of social practices of leadership and management. Globalization, organizational, and professional development bring local realities together. Research must embrace characteristic discourses in order to constitute a modified perspective to current approaches. Research must direct attention to the predominant conceptions of leaders, contexts, and relations. Leaders are “discoursed objects” capable of individual action, acting rationally in order to structure their contexts. Their ability to relate to others is an individual act and a source to progress. Good discourses displace attitudes, personal properties, and individual acts and highlight relations. One shift of attention goes from transcendental notions of truth, right, and suitability to local–historical constructions of reality. Another shift goes from reality as a singular and independent state to multiple socially constructed realities. In the processes of social construction people create individual worlds where unique relations emerge. Coordinated training and research enable different modes of relating to each other in systemic practice.

    Abstract [en]

In this article I define a project organization as action research. Thus defined, the approach presents a method for experiential learning among educators who develop as learners in an educational setting. Second, the approach describes a method for focusing on research related to change in classroom didactics brought about by the mediating instruments educators discover and use so as to overcome their own learning anxiety. Third, action research and academic investigation are described as a method for integrating theory with practice. Finally, action research is outlined as an effort for social justice—the way knowledge usually develops by social construction.

Logics, Knowledge and Action Research2006Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

“Workplace logics” signify attitudes that employees express in close interaction, formal decision-making and collaborative interventions. The term covers a metaphorical “mental context” rather than a mathematically coherent understanding of social control mechanisms that influence interlocutors in cooperative activity. Workplace logics relate to future-oriented choices that employees make so as to obtain targeted production goals. But logics also hold an explanatory potential. They enable for the researcher to account for social systems that need to be designed before they are acted on. The objective for analysing workplace logics is to turn attention away from language and focus on action. Successful action research outcomes facilitate for individual and organizational learning, the latter of which is rarely fulfilled in contemporary research.

Pedagogik, undervisning och lärande2012Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
