The Attitudes of Christian Church Pastors and Leaders toward Leadership Succession, For Leadership Continuity, in Charismatic and Pentecostal Church Organizations in Kumasi, Ghana.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Lack of cooperation of the incumbent leaders was a major cause of leadership succession failures of organizations reported. This investigation was carried out to determine the attitudes of Christian Senior Pastors and leaders (associate Pastors and Elders), for leadership continuity, toward leadership succession of Charismatic and Pentecostal Church organizations in Kumasi, Ghana; to find lasting solution to the problem of lack of cooperation of incumbent leaders towards leadership succession planning by determining the root cause of lack of cooperation of incumbent senior leader towards leadership succession. Using in-depth interview, qualitative data was collected and analyzed using inductive procedure of Structuring (Ordering) of Meanings Using Narrative for analysis. This work contends that even though best practices are necessary condition for leadership succession effectiveness, they are not sufficient to make the incumbent senior leader willing and cooperative enough to act in the best interest of the organization, let alone yield to leadership succession. It was found that the Christian Churches investigated have positive attitudes towards leadership succession because of character development adopted in the churches. It was found that apart from fear (Freeman, 2004; Zhang and Rajagopalan, 2006; 2010) and ego (Freeman, 2004; Beeson, 2006; Ciampa, 2005), unforgveness and self-centeredness were other causes, holding back the effectiveness of leadership succession due to lack of cooperation of the incumbents, with self-centeredness being the source of fear, ego and unforgiveness. It was concluded that self-centeredness was the root cause of lack of cooperation of Senior Pastors towards leadership succession. Because fear (Freeman, 2004; Zhang and Rajagopalan, 2006; 2010), ego (Freeman, 2004; Beeson, 2006; Ciampa, 2005), unforgiveness and self-centeredness produce insecurity, the incumbents were never willing and cooperative to subject themselves to anything they perceived as threat. On the basis of this, succession failures reported will rather increase in frequency. Nevertheless, self-centeredness could be resolved effectively by adopting character development focused on the following nine attributes: Faith, Peace, Joy, Humility, Patience, Self-control, Kindness, Goodness and Love (value, respect, approval, availability, attention, appreciation and service). The results suggest that the incumbent Pastors have the tendency to take actions, make choices and decisions that are in the best interest of their organization, and are favorably disposed towards leadership succession. The Christian Churches are well positioned to produce leaders who are cooperative and selfless enough to plan their own succession using best practices that yield desired outcomes. This work contributes to a better understanding of attitudes, character, relationship, motivation, highlights the invisible features (self-centeredness, fear, ego and unforgiveness) of leadership succession failures in the organization, and the transformation of character that results by simple change of attitudes consistently modified by love and its attributes so that the decisions, choices and actions of the incumbents can favor the organization, consequently, making them willing and cooperative enough to plan their own succession. Based on the results of the Christian Church organization, it serves as a basis for further research in the field.

    Abstract [sv]

Slutrapport.2014Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Anställdas uppfattning av arbetsplatslärande2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Hur Anställda Erfar Självförmåga2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AS A CATALYST FOR CONSUMER CHOICE2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Even though research on CSR activities has been on the rise, they do not have generally ratified and widely acclaimed explanation with regard to the variation in consumer response to firms operating within the same industry and supporting the same CSR activities. The aim of this research was to investigate the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in catalyzing consumer choice. The writers used quantitative research method whereby data was collected by means of online questionnaires in an online survey. The analysis was carried out through frequency, descriptive, reliability, correlation and regression analyses. We realized that although a relationship exists between CSR and consumer behavior through the three channels including legitimacy, information asymmetry and ethical decision making, CSR does not drive sales, but increases the appetite for more CSR information for use in product assessment. Therefore, the engagement in CSR may only increase purchasing and evaluation intention, but not the actual purchase. Given that CSR directly results in the increased information search, the best way to orient CSR to stimulate consumer purchase is through the availability of CSR information to the consumer through localization of CSR activities alongside product excellence and competitive product pricing. Our recommendation is that future research should consider smaller geographical zones, for instance an institution or a city.

    Abstract [en]

Many developed countries will face a disproportionately large share of older individuals in the future. This change may lead to a labour force characterized by older employees and older operational managers. This paper contributes to the existing literature on the effect of aging on firm performance by performing an explorative analysis of how the age of the operational manager and the age composition of employees relate to the survival of Swedish firms during 2004–2013. We observe that the relationship between the age of the operational manager and firm exit changes functional shape when separated into different firm-size categories. Additionally, the age of the operational manager tends to be more important for new firms compared to incumbents. The share of older employees is positively associated with firm survival. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

    Determinants of self-employment among commuters and non-commuters2016Inngår i: Papers in regional science (Print), ISSN 1056-8190, E-ISSN 1435-5957, Vol. 95, nr 4, s. 755-Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We analyse the determinants of self-employment and focus on the contextual environment. By distinguishing between commuters and non-commuters we are able to analyse the influence from the work and home environment, respectively. Our results indicate a significant difference between non-commuters and commuters in terms of the role of networks for becoming self-employed. Our results indicate that it is the business networks where people work, rather than where they live that exerts a positive influence on the probability of becoming self-employed. These effects are further robust over educational and occupational categories. © 2015 RSAI.

    Abstract [en]

Studies confirm an inverted U-shaped relationship between age and entrepreneurship. This paper deepens the understanding of this relationship by analysing how the relationship varies across time and across different types of regions, aspects often overlooked in the current literature. An individual perspective is taken, and the probability of starting a firm is expected to increase as individuals' age but at a decreasing rate. The results show significant differences in the relationship between the age of individuals and the rate of entrepreneurship across time and space. The age-entrepreneurship profile has shifted to the left over time such that individuals are younger when they start firms. © 2017 Royal Dutch Geographical Society KNAG.

Location of New Firms: Influence of Commuting Behaviour2017Inngår i: Growth and Change, ISSN 0017-4815, E-ISSN 1468-2257, Vol. 48, nr 4, s. 682-699Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the entrepreneurship literature, it is generally assumed that an individual establishes a new firm in a location in which they have strong ties, normally in the municipality of residence or employment. We scrutinise this general assumption and show that firm location depends on individual characteristics, such as the commuting experience. Our results show that commuting influences the firm location choice. The probability of establishing a firm in the work municipality increases if the entrepreneur is a commuter, holding constant the type of region and unobservable and observable individual features.

FinTech in emerging markets: a case study for Romania and Financial Technologies2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cultural, socio-demographic, technologic, financial and regulatory factors in Romania and analyze how these factors influence the adoptionof FinTech in the Romanian market.

Design/methodology/approach. Using a case study as a research method, we have gained comprehensive information from various data sources. Furthermore, we have distributed a detailed questionnaire and attempted to gauge the influence of various factors over the respondents’ usage of FinTech.

Contribution. This study attempts to improve a theoretical framework regarding the main factorsinfluencing the Fintech adoption in emerging economies. The paper contributes to the literature by describing how the interrelation of different factors contributes to the adoption of a new technologyin an emerging country which has a relatively conservative society.

Major Findings. The results of the study generally confirmed the findings in the global literatureon this topic. Some global findings could not be confirmed, partially due to the inherent bias in thesample selection. The biggest new factor found to influence FinTech adoption was the users’ priorexperience with a non-banking financial services provider, followed by their breadth of usage of various IT&C services and the time they spent online.

Perfektionism, emotion och kreativ problemlösning2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Inom perfektionism delades deltagarna in i tre grupper: icke-perfektionister, adaptiva perfektionister och maladaptiva perfektionister.

Senior citizen as a market segment for Swedish travel industry2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The senior tourism is getting more and more attention in many countries as the importance of this market segment becomes more evident. This is strengthened by political initiative/project, where generous financial aids are offered to develop promotion and communication activities to disseminate the transnational packages and raise awareness on the tourism offer for seniors (EU-Commission, 2013) could be interpreted as a possible under-served trend within tourism. This thesis aims to give insight into how the senior tourism is defined and how it is served by the Swedish main stream travel companies. Further in this thesis the authors are trying to find an answer if the market segmentation where senior citizens would be defined as a specific market segment, would benefit the companies.

Factors Affecting Employee Acceptance of Electronic Shelf Labels In a Mandatory Business Environment: -A Study Applying the UTAUT-Model in a Swedish Organization2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: The retail industry is one of the most competitive industries today as the emergence of the e-commerce has put significant pressure on traditional retailers. As price change frequencies have doubled, physical retailers struggle to adapt to online retailers; and as a result, new technologies for price automation such as Electronic Shelf Labels has emerged. However, as new technologies emerge managers and decision-makers need to understand the challenges with introducing novel technologies in workplaces; and what factors affect acceptance of said technology. This is an issue that is of interest as technologies are becoming mandatory in use in contrast to previous decades where they have been voluntary in use.

Purpose: To understand what factors affect employee acceptance of Electronic Shelf Labels in a mandatory environment, and thus shed light on where managers and decision-makers need to put focus when introducing new technologies in business environments.

Method: A descriptive and explanatory research design was chosen for this thesis, combined with a quantitative approach for data collection as well as data analysis. The chosen conceptual model for the thesis was the UTAUT-model upon which the questions of a self-administrated web-survey with close-ended questions was based upon. The survey was answered by employees of a market-leading Scandinavian retailer who today have Electronic Shelf Labels implemented in their stores. A total of 100 respondents answered the survey, and the results were analysed quantitatively through utilizing software such as SPSS Statistics for descriptive statistics and SmartPLS 3 for Structural Equation Modeling.

Results: The results of the SEM-analysis unveiled that the main factors impacting technology acceptance of Electronic Shelf Labels in a mandated environment are facilitating conditions and attitude towards usage. The conceptual model explained 46,4% of the variance of the model which tested the constructs of the original UTAUT-model, with slight modifications. Moreover, the results unveiled that there was a high acceptance of ESL amongst employees, and that there is positive view on the technology and its benefits.

Conclusion: Theoretical, this study contributes in a new conceptual model that explains technology acceptance in mandatory business environments where facilitating conditions and attitude towards usage are the main predictors of technology acceptance. Practically, it suggests that decision-makers and managers need to put effort in ensuring a working infrastructure around a new technology and enough resources so that employees can use the technology properly. Moreover, encouragement of a positive attitude towards a new technology is also of importance – meaning that effort should be put in highlighting the benefits of new technologies pre-implementation and having responsible available that can demonstrate this in the introductory phase of the technology.

Delimitations: The limitations of this study are mainly tied to geographical location, time and sample size. The study only considers the Swedish stores of the Scandinavian retailer that was studied, and the study is restricted in time as it takes into account the technology acceptance of Electronic Shelf Labels under a certain time frame; as a result, it is not longitudinal. Lastly, the sample size of the survey is rather small, even though satisfactory for its intended use.

    Abstract [sv]

Kurs: Kandidatarbete i Företagsekonomi, 15 högskolepoäng.

A Cost Breakdown and Production Uncertainty Analysis of Additive Manufacturing: A Study of Low-Volume Components Produced with Selective Laser Melting2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

Additive manufacturing has recently gained cogency as a final part manufacturing technique. The method uses a layer-upon-layer technique to build three-dimensional objects. This technique has many advantages creating new opportunities regarding production.

    Purpose:

The purpose of the study is to investigate cost elements, cost drivers, their weight distribution, and to explore production uncertainties of the additive manufacturing process. The production uncertainty parameters of the explored uncertainties are then evaluated to investigate how some of them impacts the production cost of the case component.

    Method:

The following study have used qualitative data collection methods in terms of interviews together with a pre-study and a sensitivity analysis tool to identify cost impacts of uncertainty parameters. Five primary interviews were performed with employees at the company with relevant knowledge of the studied field.

    Results:

The result shows that the product cost can be divided into two categories of material cost and manufacturing costs, these two categories then have different cost elements that drives cost. The explored uncertainties of the process consist of both aleatory and epistemic uncertainty. The explored production uncertainty parameter that affects the final product cost the most is the time needed to finish the AM build.

    Conclusions:

Considering production uncertainty is important in order to have reliable and accurate cost estimations. The three explored production uncertainties that have the most significant impact on the final product cost is the yearly machine running time, the SLM machine time needed to finish the component, and reduced manning time in the operations. These three uncertainty parameters should, therefore, have a larger focus than variables that do not have the same impact on the final product cost, to create better cost estimations.

Developing process quality measurement in shipbuilding industry2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the possibility to adapt Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), tothe development process in the shipbuilding industry.More specifically the development process wasdelimited to the phases; design, work preparation, production and verification.Ordinarily, OEE is a performance measurement for mass production. Itincludes aquality parameter which has been the focus of this thesis. Both literature review and case study investigation show that process quality is of critical importance in the shipbuilding industry because of the needs for dimensional accuracy and high-quality assemblage. The three main factors affecting process quality are;the flow of information between engineering phaseand productionphase, and the amount of rework and delays. The factors wereevaluated along an optimization method with a specific attention to process quality. Acase studywas conductedto confirm the relevance of the literature review on factors affecting process qualityand allowedto gather factors in process quality that are relevant to the industry. In light of those results, I re-developed a model providingnew measurement of what I call OPQE (Overall Process Quality Efficiency). This study contributes to a betterunderstanding of process quality in ETO(Engineering-To-Order)industries. Notably it shows how deviations that require rework and causesdelays are impacting process quality. It also shows that detecting errors early in the process of production is essential for insuring quality control. An error detected late affects negatively process quality and increases cost.

Comparison between proactive block replacement with no inventory and separate reactive replacement with inventory2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

To become a successful company today all costs, must be kept to a minimum. To make sure they are companies need to try new methods and policies to get closer to an optimum production. One of the things that need attention is the inventory of spare parts and the replacement of the same. The companies want their machines to have as many active hours as possible and therefore they need to replace components in them from time to time.

This study will compare the current policy with a new one to see if it is economically justifiable to minimize the inventory of spare parts. This will be done by replacing two identical components in the same machine before they fail and production stops. We call it the proactive block replacement policy. To test this new policy a simulation based on historical data was made where the costs associated with the different replacements such as cost of component, cost o lost production and cost of the two types of replacements. All these costs were considered to see is the company could save money through this change.

The result showed that the new policy was not suitable for this specific component because the cost of the component and the variation of lifetime on it was too high. Because of the big variation of lifetime, the time of the replacement had to be set after fewer hours of production which means more components will be used and the cost per active hour will be higher.

This study is limited because only one specific component at a specific machine was studied and it is not possible to make any assumptions for other components from this study. This had to be done to get the most precise information from the company to get the best result.

The conclusion of this study is that the company should keep their current replacement theory and not change into the new one. Though there might be possible ways of lowering the costs by only having one component in inventory instead of two.

Att leva med ena foten över kanten2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

EVALUATION OF ADDITIVE MANUFACTURINGSCALABILITY: Optimization model development for understanding the problem of Industrial 3D-printing production2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In industrial design, additive manufacturing technology is one of the key technologies that have changed the way of producing metal component parts on short demand. Because of competitiveness among industries and the requirement to keep up with thegrowth of thesmart factory technology, the industries are pushed to step up and take further steps towards industry 4.0. Today the AM technology is used at prototype scale, but previous literature says that for the technology to reach the full capacity, it needs to be scaled up. Previous literature shows that improvements in the supply chain are necessary in order to scale up the industrial production and achieve high-scale adoption of the technology. As there are few sourcesin the literature about AM scalability or finding critical improvements in terms of lead times, costs and material consumptions, this study will fill that gap.

The main objective of this research is to study small-scale 3D printing in the AM industries with two main industrial objectives in mind: 1 –Understanding the problem of optimization of a small-scale 3D printing operation in the industry and 2 –projecting a scenario regarding the scaling up of such facilities to reach full industrial production capacity.

The method used for finding improvements in the additive manufacturing supply chain was optimization. I have developed the Overall Material Flow Effectiveness model (OMFE), which is an optimization model that takes into consideration the relevantparameters of the AM material flow regarding lead times, costs and material consumption. A literature review was conducted to determine the research design and what has and not been investigated.

A sensitivity analysis was performed, which provided information aboutissues of scale, size and significance of optimizing a prototyping model, andalso aboutanalyzing the optimization model development in terms of evaluating the prototyping, making it better and scaling up to high-level production.

The optimal material flow of the AM industry is a scaled-up production with implemented improvements regarding transport and cost. By comparing it with the current prototype production, it is possible to identifythat all of the OMFE related factors have higher percentages. The top losses within the current AM industry are related to non-human processes. The most significant optimization loss is the loss of transport, where the time from supplier to goods reception have a significant influence. The second largestlossis cost, generated bylabour management.

E-book market adoption in Sweden2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge about why customers select e-books, paper books or audiobooks, and what differences exist for different customer groups.

Considering that publishing is a really old business, well established hundreds of years before the internet, it is not surprising that disruptive new concepts as e-books, audiobooks and the internet require the companies to change their way of doing and looking upon business. Organisations need to alter their dominant logic in an appropriate way in order to be able to compete with newcomers that are not attached to an “old” dominant logic.

Even though Swedish people are tech-savvy, the e-book market account for a very small proportion compared to the total book market. One important reason for the low proportion of e-books and digital audiobooks is that it is a relatively new market. It takes time for a new market to expand. Another reason is that many companies believe that profitability is too low. The fact that e-books and audiobooks have to pay 25 percent in VAT while the VAT on paper books is 6 percent doesn’t help.

The impact of eBooks and audiobooks on the book market is related to the ease or difficulty of potential readers to utilise the available technical aids. This question has been analysed in the context of three partially overlapping theories about the individual's adoption of new technology. They are Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the United Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Theory. Furthermore, some theories for understanding of individuals' adoption of technical innovations in the book market are used. These are the Adoption-Diffusion Theory and the Innovation-Decision process.

In order to gain increased knowledge about determining factors for readers' choice of eBook and paper book, a survey was conducted. Aspects such as demographics, reading habits, willingness to use eBook related services and interest in self-publishing a book were analysed. In our survey, we limit ourselves to an analysis of various individual factors that influence the individual's choice between e-books/audio books and paper books. The survey provides a lot of interesting findings. "Early adopters" in our survey are those who prefer the electronic option, but at the same time read many paper books. It is in this group we find the most frequent readers, not among the traditional paper book readers. Moreover, a low price of e-books relative to paper books makes it easier for readers to adopt e-books. We also found that the group of books who prefer paper books are de facto interested in e-books, but only if they are free or by subscribing to them.

The technical conditions for expanding the market for e-books and audiobooks in Sweden are very good. The digital maturity and technical infrastructure are at the top of the world. Virtually all households have the technical equipment needed for digital books, especially among younger people. However, the market for e-books and audiobooks is quite new, which means that it is still very small compared to paper books. However, the rate of growth is high, especially in the form of subscription services.

How to motivate employees in order to succeed with Open Innovation Projects2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Today, internal resources are limited and could not master all new technologies that have emerged during the last few decades. The complexity and depth needed is too costly to maintain in house so the internal innovation functions have to be decreased as they do not generate enough return on their investment. Companies need to find new ways to meet their growth targets and one way is to leverage their innovation capabilities by using external innovations and not just rely on internal innovation. But changing the game from internal closed to open innovation comes with challenges when it comes to company culture and how the employees adapt. Open innovation can create conflicts between the internal team and external team. The internal employee might feel that their work is taken from them, increasing the risk of losing their jobs and specialists might become skeptical to an alternative solution in an innovation. To harvest the full advantage of open innovation the internal employees need not to resist open innovation and become motivated to participate and work with open innovation according to a best practice. This has led us to the Research Question: How could employees’ motivation be enhanced in Open Innovation Projects? The purpose of this paper was to identify key motivational factors for employees in open innovation projects as well as what can be done to enhance motivation in open innovation. Our hope is that the findings can be utilized in making open innovation projects more efficient and in the end contributing to a more efficient use of resources and a stronger economy. We have done a multiple case study with six European companies working with open innovation. Ten in-depth interviews have been conducted with employees at these companies. Based on extensive motivational theory like intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors, we have analyzed the motivations of the employees with qualitative methodology. Our findings show that to succeed with open innovation there are certain factors that stand out particular to open innovation, while other factors are relevant to all types of innovation. In order to fully exploit the potential of open innovation you need to find employees that are motivated by working with external contacts and celebrate collaboration. The employees need to have self-awareness that open innovation pose an opportunity to take advantage of external competence for his or her development as well as the opportunity develop better and faster products or service for the company. To enhance motivation among the employees each organization can facilitate open innovation centrally to reduce to resistance to undertake the effort to change way of working. Another key area to enhance motivation for open innovation is recognition of employees.

An analysis of cloud based e-learning providers’ versioning strategy2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: Versioning is a product differentiation strategy where a product or service are distinguished or diversified in the intention of making it more attractive to a specific target group. It is often used to price discriminate and a way to profit maximize. Previous studies have mostly concerned software products in general. But with cloud based software products, specific conditions when versioning might occur. E-learning system are one specific software product that shifts more and more to the cloud and a specific market to study.

Purpose: Differentiating a software product can be made in several ways but which features to use when versioning is not studied in previous studies, the conditions and reasons are unclear. The purpose of this study is to study cloud based e-learning providers to discover characteristics of feasible features when versioning.

Method: To answer the defined research problem qualitative research methods was used in terms of interviews, documentations and observing artefacts. The research data was gathered through four case studies of different cloud e-learning provider, conducting of eight interviewees and four observations of their respective e-learning system. Additionally, articles and other documents was also analysed, that was provided by the companies of the case studies.

Delimitations: This research was restricted so it focused on cloud e-learning providers’ perspective as they are those who use the versioning strategy. The limitations therefore only concerns e-learning and cloud services and are not generalized to all software products.

Results: The results from the different data collection methods shows that feature characteristics mainly concerns market reasons with specific user preferences and customers with buying behaviors. E-learning systems brings technical reasons to why features are feasible, and the cloud have different service layers, each with different possible features to differentiate in. Costs is also a major concern when choosing feasible features for versioning.

Conclusion: E-learning providers see the versioning strategy as an iterative process. Which features that are feasible for one versions seem to change over time as the market changes and product develops. Features are mainly related to the specific market. When versioning, features are separated between standard features for the whole system or segment specific features for one version. Features are also considered if they will add more value than the cost to develop. E-learning providers also develop features if they are economic and technological possible to develop, and if they are within the company’s scope.

Varumärkespåverkan i sociala medier: Hur varumärkescommunities på Facebook påverkar konsumentrelationer och varumärken2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Predicting burglars' risk exposure and level of pre-crime preparation using crime scene data2018Inngår i: Intelligent Data Analysis, ISSN 1088-467X, Vol. 22, nr 1, s. 167-190, artikkel-id IDA 322-3210Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: The present study aims to extend current research on how offenders’ modus operandi (MO) can be used in crime linkage, by investigating the possibility to automatically estimate offenders’ risk exposure and level of pre-crime preparation for residential burglaries. Such estimations can assist law enforcement agencies when linking crimes into series and thus provide a more comprehensive understanding of offenders and targets, based on the combined knowledge and evidence collected from different crime scenes. Methods: Two criminal profilers manually rated offenders’ risk exposure and level of pre-crime preparation for 50 burglaries each. In an experiment we then analyzed to what extent 16 machine-learning algorithms could generalize both offenders’ risk exposure and preparation scores from the criminal profilers’ ratings onto 15,598 residential burglaries. All included burglaries contain structured and feature-rich crime descriptions which learning algorithms can use to generalize offenders’ risk and preparation scores from. Results: Two models created by Naïve Bayes-based algorithms showed best performance with an AUC of 0.79 and 0.77 for estimating offenders' risk and preparation scores respectively. These algorithms were significantly better than most, but not all, algorithms. Both scores showed promising distinctiveness between linked series, as well as consistency for crimes within series compared to randomly sampled crimes. Conclusions: Estimating offenders' risk exposure and pre-crime preparation  can complement traditional MO characteristics in the crime linkage process. The estimations are also indicative to function for cross-category crimes that otherwise lack comparable MO. Future work could focus on increasing the number of manually rated offenses as well as fine-tuning the Naïve Bayes algorithm to increase its estimation performance.

Antecedents of creativity and innovativeness in the Swedish manufacturing pharmaceutical industry2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The ability to create new products and services is a competitive advantage and in many cases a requirement for long term success of a company. In the manufacturing pharmaceutical industry, the freedom to think and act creatively is depressed by the demand for external and internal compliance. As such, it is important to understand the underlying factors of creativity and innovativeness in order to promote them. Several studies have been performed on the subject to increase creativity. A theme that is recurrent in several creativity increasing studies it that leadership and the leadership style of the management is important for creativity. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate if the leadership style transformational leadership can be associated with a higher level of creativity and innovativeness in the Swedish pharmaceutical industry. Given that the effect of transformational leadership on creativity is likely to be derived from creativity enhancing variables that have been enhanced in the follower’s a literature framework is built to find, and in turn empirically test, if this effect of transformational leadership (if any) is mediated by other variables. The thesis contains a literature review of current leadership and creativity theories as well as literature review of intrinsic motivation and psychological empowering. From the theoretical framework 10 hypothesis´s about performance, transformational leadership, creativity, innovativeness, intrinsic motivation and psychological empowering were stated. The hypothesis’s was tested trough an empirical study. Data was gathered by a questionnaire that was sent out to 22 manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Sweden. The results of the study support the idea that transformational leadership increases creativity and innovativeness in the investigated market. However, no correlation was found between transformational leadership and intrinsic motivation or psychological empowering. While not the central question of this thesis the study also supports that a higher level of creativity and innovativeness is correlated with a higher performance.

Utilising a unique Swedish matched employer–employee dataset, which has been pooled with firm-level patent application data, we provide new evidence that knowledge workers’ mobility has a positive and strongly significant impact on firm innovation output, as measured by firm patent applications. The effect is statistically and economically highly significant for knowledge workers who have previously worked in a patenting firm (the learning-by-hiring effect), whereas only limited impact could be detected for firms losing knowledge workers (the learning-by-diaspora effect). No effects were detected for inexperienced university graduates. Finally, the effect is more pronounced when the joining worker originates from within the same region. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Taxes, the tax administrative burden and the entrepreneurial life cycle2019Inngår i: Small Business Economics, ISSN 0921-898X, E-ISSN 1573-0913Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We present a modified version of the entrepreneurial choice model, where it is shown that the expected utility of becoming an entrepreneur is decreasing in both the levels of taxes and the tax administrative burden. We extend previous empirical findings by examining how these variables influence entrepreneurs at different stages in the entrepreneurial life cycle. Our findings imply that the effect of the tax administrative burden varies over the entrepreneurial life cycle from strongly negative to insignificant. The most pronounced negative effects appear in the early stages of entrepreneurship. We conclude that a 10% reduction in the tax administrative burden increases the propensity for new business establishments by 4%. Our findings support the idea that tax simplification is one way to encourage entrepreneurship, without any reduction in tax revenues. © 2019, The Author(s).

    Abstract [en]

The concept born global firms has gained a spectacular increase in interest from both academic and political circles. Rigorous quantitative treatment of born global firms are however rare in the international business/economics literature. Implementing unique data on all Swedish start-ups during 1998–2008 in the manufacturing sector, we conclude that born global firms are a very rare event, that their prevalence seems invariant to time, and that they perform similar to other matched “twin” firms with regard to profitability and productivity but report a considerably higher growth in employment and sales. These results are robust to a wider definition of born global firms and to the timing of performance measurements. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

LEDARSKAPETS PÅVERKAN PÅ LÄRANDEPROCESSER AV TYST KUNSKAP: FYRA ANSTÄLLDAS UPPLEVELSER2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Are there inherent biases in applying cost-benefit analysis?2018Inngår i: Applied Economics Letters, ISSN 1350-4851, E-ISSN 1466-4291, Vol. 25, nr 7, s. 461-464Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article extends discussions of potential biases that can exist in applying cost-benefit analysis. While there is extensive evidence that capture can result in stakeholder manipulation of inputs, there are also claims that the analysis is inherently theoretically bias in favour of over acceptance. The article shows that, contrary to these latter claims, treating projects in isolation is unlikely to produce such bias; indeed, it is as likely as not to lead to suboptimally low acceptance rates. The reason for excessive acceptance of projects therefore is largely due to institutional capture of the analysis for either self-interest or natural human over-optimism.

What do skin care consumers think about personalization of content, user interface or a combination of both?2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Background

The cosmetic industry is growing at a fast pace and, like other industries, there are a few problems regarding e-retailing that makes it hard for customers to make optimal purchase decision. Example of problems are; the number of e-retailers increase, e-retailers’ variety of products increase, and the content is almost unlimited. Companies have started to personalize to solve these problems. However, there is a lack in the literature regarding how-to best design personalization with regard to its dimensions and subcategories. Therefore, the next step is to get an understanding of which dimensions and subcategories that are the most effective.

    Objectives

At present, the majority of the literature regarding personalization focus on how personalization can be performed and not in which way personalization should be performed to increase customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. This means that the knowledge regarding the subcategories within personalization and their effectiveness is limited. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to increase the body of knowledge regarding which subcategories that is the most effective in increasing customer satisfaction and/or loyalty. Knowledge about this topic can give companies perspectives to know how personalization should be designed to increase customer satisfaction and customer loyalty.

    Methods

This study was a survey type, resulting in primary quantitative data collecting and analyzes. A pilot test was first made, before the final questionnaire. This to test the reliability and validity. The data from the pilot study were partly analyzed in SPSS and partly analyzed manually. The data from the final questionnaire were then analyzed in SPSS.

    Results

Regarding customer satisfaction, there is a statistically significant difference between content personalization and AIGUI (Adaptive Interface and Graphical User Interface) personalization as well as between AIGUI personalization and combination (content and AIGUI) personalization. However, there is no statistical difference between content personalization and combination personalization. Regarding customer loyalty, the is no statistical difference between the personalization groups.

    Conclusions

An e-retailer in the cosmetic industry should focus on content personalization or combination personalization

The Role of Knowledge Heterogeneity on the Innovative Capability of Industrial Districts2013Inngår i: Entrepreneurial Knowledge, Technology and the Transformation of Regions / [ed] Karlsson, Charlie; Johansson, Börje; Stough, Roger, New York: Routledge , 2013Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper seeks to contribute to the ongoing debate concerning the role of heterogeneity for the innovative capability of industrial districts. With this aim, using a knowledge-based approach, the paper focuses on different sources of industrial district knowledge heterogeneity and studies how the different level of heterogeneity affects the innovative capability of industrial districts. Four theoretical hypotheses concerning the effects of knowledge and knowledge heterogeneity on the Industrial District innovativeness are formulated. To test the hypotheses, an econometric analysis on 32 Italian District Provinces is applied. Empirical results show that knowledge heterogeneity matter for increasing the innovative capability of industrial districts.

Abstract Title: Customer focus in the food industry - internal customer-oriented processes through a Value Chain perspective. Authors: Jasmine Carew, Zekarias Ghebregiorgis and Victor Söderberg Supervisor: Jennie Blomqvist and Katrin Franander Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Bachelor’s thesis in Business Administration, 15 credits Key words: Financial Management, Value Creation, Customer Focus, Competitiveness, Food Industry, Value Chain, Value Chain Management, Shared Value and Value Chain Analysis Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify customer-oriented value creative activities in the food-industry with the help of Value Chain. Method: The study is a form of qualitative research based on primary data in the form of three interviews with industry experienced personal and secondary data in the form of an industry-specific report and scientific articles. Results: Focusing on customer means, in practical terms, customer value equivalent, preferably exceeding, the price of purchased goods/services. In the food industry one was able to find evidence of a great work focusing on customer; customer-oriented value creation was a focal part of the business activity. Companies within the food industry are actively working with focusing on customer in the business to create and strengthen relationships with customer and also to keep a strong position on the market. Despite this one could find some flaws in the customer focus where companies could improve their business and by that grow even stronger.

    Abstract [en]

Prevalent business model elements in the startup stage2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to discover the use and benefit of business models in the early stages of startup businesses. The researchers focused on the professional services and retail sales industry and interviewed entrepreneurs from two countries as their case study in order to assess the success of business models through the first hand experiences of the entrepreneurs as they applied business models in their startup companies. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to find out how the business model framework is used by small firms in the startup stage. This academic work also aims to increase the significance of the theory described here with the help of a qualitative study of a particular situation: the study of the business model structure built by entrepreneurs in the startup stage of their small firms, all of them belonging to the service sector. Will be taken as an example two developing countries, considering that their economies are tightly hinged on the success of small firms in the service sector, which accounts for about 60% of their economy. The aim is to explain among the main elements of a business model, which are the most relevant when starting a company, for a further value creation and to what extent does the business model framework benefit them. Research Implications: This study also continues the pathway of research on business models and entrepreneurship, in conjunction with the empirical investigation of companies willing to be measured in terms of their performance, study that might require time and resources but could be done as future research to answer the question on whether there is a connection between performance and the architecture of the business model. Practical Implications: The practical implications of this study contribute to the way entrepreneurs would do business in the startup stage in their firms. The use of business models may have a huge impact in the overall success of the firm in its startup stage, thereby contributing positively in the economy of a country.

Market Entry, Strategy and Business Development in Mobile Health (mHealth) Industry2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Problem formulation. The European Commission considers that health care providers and potential payers may need further evidence of mobile health (mHealth) clinical and economic benefits and despite there are hundreds of mHealth initiatives, most of them did not move beyond the pilot phase.

Purpose. This thesis aims at analyzing how can mHealth companies contribute towards solving existing health care challenges while becoming successful businesses in such an immature market. The expected results are a set of empirical evidences for companies and investors interested in this relatively new industry for the development of successful businesses, products and services.

Literature. The authors have explored classic theories and models on market entry, business and strategy development in combination with recent studies on health care, Internet and mHealth economy and ecosystem.

Methods. A qualitative multiple case study has been conducted. An analytical framework with propositions derived from the literature analysis guide the empirical study of two organizations that have successfully developed mHealth solutions in two countries with different socio-economic situations: China and Spain. Organization A is a health care and lifestyle company from Beijing responsible for a successful app with 80 million users that has brought 45 million USD investment. Organization B is the first intrapreneurial public organization born within a hospital in Madrid and committed to make knowledge available to patients and health care professionals through ICT. After a set of interviews with executive representatives and project managers, a pattern-matching analysis has been used to extract inferences and to identify correlations and deviations from literature research.

Key findings. The main conclusion of this thesis work is that mHealth is clearly a profitable blue ocean industry nowadays with lots of business opportunities to explore, room for competition and complex challenges to solve. On one side, mHealth is presented as a disruptive industry expected to cause a big impact in health care by contributing to solve costs and quality problems although there is little evidence on such benefits. On the other side, privacy, security, regulations, governments’ decisions and reluctant health care professionals become the main barriers for adoption. The outlook for the future of mHealth proves that it will be fundamental to count with multidisciplinary teams of professionals, geographically distributed health centers and technological platforms with secure and standardized communications. All these will not be possible without a general mindset change from government, administrators, regulators and health care professionals to incentivize and foster new mobile health technologies treating them as an ally rather than a threat.

Psykiskt välbefinnande på arbetsplatsen: En kvantitativ undersökning om arbetsmotivation, arbetsmiljö ochgruppdynamik2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Innovation as a function of company performance2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to provide clarity on which factors within an organization positively affect its performance in terms of innovation.  Innovation is seen as a critical component of a company’s strategy in achieving market differentiation and profitability, yet for many, it remains a frustrating pursuit.  This study aims to empirically model the relationship between a firm’s investment in innovation and the effect of this investment on its performance.  The method used is Structural Equation Modeling with data gathered from our online survey of 128 respondents from firms within the EU.  This work addresses two research questions, the first being to confirm that a firm’s innovation performance is influenced by both a commitment to human factors focusing on softer values in combination with strong R&D and technical capability.  Secondly, whether the presence of innovation inhibitors influences this relationship.  The findings showed that a firm’s innovation performance is improved when it prioritizes creating an environment and culture that nurtures innovation only when activated through a strong commitment to technical and R&D excellence, but not without this technical capacity.  Secondly, the introduction of innovation inhibitors reconfirmed the first finding, and the relationship between both the human factors within a company and its technical capability, as well as the relationship between this technical capability and its performance was stronger in their presence.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine whether hierarchically defined groups differ in their perceptions of how organizational distance has changed following a radical organizational change that saw one hierarchical level eliminated from the organizations’ structure. Interviews were conducted with employees atdifferent hierarchical levels, from the same workplace, who all went through anorganizational change during the spring of 2013.

The change initiative that was implemented consisted of the removal of one hierarchical level from the organizational structure. In the two years since the implementation this study observed noticeable reductions in both structural and cultural distance within the organization, while the physical distance between workers and the closest ranking production-manager had increased. The study shows how communication and interaction across hierarchical levels contributes in reducing organizational distance, while structural factors remain which act to maintain existing distances. The importance of frequent communication throughout the change process will, according to the findings, promote enthusiasm and belief in the change initiative throughout the organization.

Digital mognad på individnivå: En studie om digital mognad hos de anställda i en kommunal verksamhet2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background. Digital maturity is an important topic for the public sector to respond the higher demands on digital solutions. Only 46 percent of the public sectors has a clear digitization strategy. Different organizations have different levels of digital maturity fulfillment. There are several reasons why organizations are interested in increasing the digital maturity. In order to increase efficiency, degree of innovation, customer value, improve decision making through digital transformations. Employees are the most important resource for an organization’s digital transformation. That is the reason why the organization should ensure their employees’ level of digital maturity addition to organizational development. By studying the municipality’s digital maturity, it will contribute to a research on the digital maturity on an individual level form the employees’ perspective.

Purpose. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute with knowledge about how municipal employee’s digital maturity appears and to access the factors that are important to consider while implementing new technology in the organization. The factors will contribute to practical applications that encourage a higher level of employees’ digital maturity.

Method. Based on the purpose, a qualitative study has been conducted. Twelve municipal employees with different background, position, and gender were interviewed to collect empirical data for a larger perspective on the whole municipality and IoT, Internet of Things, has been used as an investigation tool for this study. The analysis of the empirical data was based on our own definition of digital maturity at an individual level, which was based on previous research. By using the definition and other theoretical sources, the empirical material has been analyzed.

Analysis and conclusion. The result of the thesis unveiled that there is a huge variation of the digital maturity level on municipal employees regarding to IoT.
