The effects of environmental uncertainty conditions on organisational innovativeness and performance of SMEs.2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Innovativeness is considered to be an important factor for firm’s survival and their ability to compete in today’s market. Therefore, researchers have become more interested in studying innovativeness and its drivers. Studies have also showed that there’s a positive relationship between environmental uncertainty and innovativeness. Organisations are responsive to turbulent environments through innovativeness in order to stay competitive and improve performance. The purpose of this thesis is to rank critical environmental factor’s effect on organisational innovativeness of small and medium enterprises in Sweden, through investigating the impact of market/demand turbulence and technological turbulence on innovativeness. Additionally, we want to examine the relationship between innovativeness and business performance, as well as the indirect relationship between environmental uncertainty and performance. Based on previous literature, we have developed hypotheses and proposed a research model to study the formulated problems. Data for the study were collected from 50 SMEs in Sweden, through a survey with well-known scales and were analysed using regression analysis. The results of the study, reveal that environmental uncertainty has a positive effect on the innovativeness of SMEs. In addition, technological turbulence showed to have a positive significant effect on an SME’s innovativeness; however, contrary to general belief, market/demand turbulence did not have any prominent effect. Our findings also proved that innovativeness have a strong positive impact on business performance, and that only technological turbulence have an indirect influence on performance through innovativeness. This study aimed to contribute to the management a better understanding, of which conditions of environmental turbulences SMEs should adapt to, in order to increase their level of innovativeness. Keywords: environmental uncertainty, organizational innovativeness, performance, market/demand turbulence, technological turbulence, SMEs.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Professor Philippe Aghion is the 2016 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, consisting of 100,000 Euros and a statuette designed by the internationally renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles. He is one of the most influential researchers worldwide in economics in the last couple of decades. His research has advanced our understanding of the relationship between firm-level innovation, entry and exit on the one hand, and productivity and growth on the other. Aghion has thus accomplished to bridge theoretical macroeconomic growth models with a more complete and consistent microeconomic setting. He is one of the founding fathers of the pioneering and original contribution referred to as Schumpeterian growth theory. Philippe Aghion has not only contributed with more sophisticated theoretical models, but also provided empirical evidence regarding the importance of entrepreneurial endeavours for societal prosperity, thereby initiating a more nuanced policy discussion concerning the interdependencies between entrepreneurship, competition, wealth and growth.

    Abstract [sv]

Designing customer rewards programs for repeated purchase using optimization methods2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A Customer Rewards Program (CRP) or a loyalty program is characterized by customers being rewarded for repeated purchases. The goal of these programs is to increase sales and profit through offering purchase incentives in the form of delayed rewards, as a result influencing customer behavior and in the end increasing company profit. It is an open debate in the literature if such reward programs are truly profitable for the company running it. This thesis therefore proposes a new approach to designing a CRP based on optimization methods with a focus on maximizing the expected profitability of the program. The key finding of the thesis is that such an approach can be applied to CRPs in order to increase the profitability of the companies running such programs. The approach offers promising results towards applicability to specific business segments and as a result towards maximizing the expected profits resulting from customer rewards programs. Since a largescale CRP may require significant developments on existing infrastructure and can pose high costs through the rewards redeemed during the program, the perspective of being able to maximize profits through fine-tuning the program parameters could be of great help. It can even be crucial to a company considering large investments on necessary developments or aiming to increase the returns on an existing CRP infrastructure. As part of the thesis we have analyzed the – at the time of writing – running CRP programs of several major companies present on the Hungarian market based on publicly available data in order to evaluate the applicability of the proposed optimization approach to real-world CRP designs. The analysis done on these real-world CRP designs indicates that the proposed optimization approach is applicable to a class of CRP designs witnessed to be popular among companies operating in various business segments. We have also investigated Hungary’s largest pharmacy-chain to gain insight into real-world CRP design considerations. Based on guided interviews conducted with the head of marketing at the aforementioned pharmacy-chain we conclude that the relevant information needed for our proposed optimization approach can be available to a company from business data (e.g. through billing and accounting information) readily available in an integrated IT infrastructure. We also conclude that the proposed theoretical results on CRP design are based on valid mathematical assumptions and correlate to accounting considerations related to the introduction of a CRP program.

Enabling strategic change through business and IT alignment: Challenges for an organization’s management and leadership2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main objective for this thesis is to identify a set of challenges imposed on an organization undergoing strategic change impacting their IT Landscape. Organizations most embark on strategic change initiatives in order to remain competitive and create business value. It is important to understand these challenges imposed during the change process in order to be prepared and able to minimize the negative impact they may have if not handle properly. For this purpose within the scope of this thesis the aim is to identify challenge areas and the specific challenges they may impose. These identified challenges can be used as a baseline for organizations in order to understand which areas to address in order to minimize negative impact during a strategic change related to their IT Landscape. A case study methodology was used in this thesis and relevant research through literature review in identified topics was conducted. Communication, leadership, business value and strategy realization, knowledge management and change management are examined through the theoretical framework and identified as areas in need of attention during a strategic change initiative. Also within the theoretical framework this thesis identifies Enterprise Architecture as an enabler for succeeding with the change initiative related to the IT Landscape. The qualitative empirical data for this thesis was collected through the interview of ten professionals within four different organizations. Based on the above approach, within the scope for this thesis, a set of challenge areas and specific challenges were identified and the conclusion was that these areas are important to address during a strategic change initiative impacting IT Landscape within an organization in order to ensure a successful outcome.

Purpose: Purpose of this paper is to analyze the circumstances under which social marketing affect the consumer's priority of functional and symbolic values with regards to the consumption of beef.

Method: Written survey followed by interview session with focus on the three different segments of regular consumers of beef, flexitarians and vegetarians. These segments include both consumers and non- consumers of beef. All respondents who activly chose to restrict or refrain beef consumption has to base their decision on reasons which are other than religious.

Results: This paper found possible situations where social marketing influenced the consumer behaviour with regard to beef consumption. This conclusion is based on the fact that all segments included in this paper mainly based their consumer behaviour on social information sources. The result also showed a tendency for the respondents in the segment of flexitarians to both influence and to be influenced by each other's consumer behavior.

Keywords: Social Marketing, Consumption of Beef, Consumer behaviour

Human capital sorting: The "when" and "who" of the sorting of educated workers to urban regions2018In: Journal of regional science, ISSN 0022-4146, E-ISSN 1467-9787, Vol. 58, no 3, p. 581-610Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The sorting of high-ability workers is often advanced as one source of spatial disparities in economic outcomes. There are still few papers that analyze when human capital sorting occurs and whom it involves. Using data on 16 cohorts of university graduates in Sweden, we demonstrate significant sorting to urban regions on high school grades and education levels of parents, i.e., two attributes typically associated with latent abilities that are valued in the labor market. A large part of this sorting has already occurred in deciding where to study, because the top universities in Sweden are predominantly located in urban regions. The largest part of directed sorting on ability indicators occurs in the decision of where to study. Even after controlling for sorting prior to labor market entry, the best and brightest are still more likely to start working in urban regions. However, this effect appears to be driven by Sweden's main metropolitan region, Stockholm. We find no influence of our ability indicators on the probability of starting to work in urban regions after graduation when Stockholm is excluded. Studies of human capital sorting need to account for selection processes to and from universities, because neglecting mobility prior to labor market entry is likely to lead to an underestimation of the extent of the sorting to urban regions.

Role of ICT in Combating Corruption and Improving Public Service Delivery, A case study of Punjab Information Technology Board2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Governments in both developing and developed countries provide services to its citizen however some provide better services than the others. Public services generally include facilities of health, education, electricity and water supply, social welfare, transportation, communication and other services. Countries face many challenges while providing these services to citizens and many developing countries have failed to provide the public services efficiently and are facing issues while providing service delivery to its citizens. One of the issues is corruption. The developing countries need to adopt e-governance and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to overcome these issues. E-governance is a process of improving through Information Technology (IT), the way government works, shares information, interacts with clients (citizen, Business, Government) and provides services to clients. Our thesis will investigate whether ICT can combat corruption and improve Public Service Delivery (PSD) in developing countries. Findings of our study will help developing countries in combating corruption and improving public services. We have reviewed the literature related to public service delivery, corruption and its adverse effects, use of ICT and e-governance to combat corruption. We have adopted a case study approach to see what sorts of ICT initiatives are being taken by the government of Punjab to reduce corruption and improve the public services. In this regard we have explored the e-governance projects of PITB (Information Technology department of the Government of Punjab) including one of a recent project of PITB namely Citizen Feedback Model (CFM) which has got international attention worldwide for combating corruption and improving public services delivery. We have performed quantitative analysis on six months data set of CFM which was comprised of over one hundred and seventy thousand responses categorized in predefined categories of feedback. By doing the quantitative analysis of CFM data we have found that this particular e-governance project is reducing corruption of public officials and improving public service delivery. Further explanations are provided through information gathered by interviews. Finally we have tied our results to findings in the literature and suggested implications.

Lärande utvärdering: ESF-projektet Klara Livet : Implementeringsfasen 2013-20142014Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Följeutvärderingsrapport2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Kartläggning av chefers vardag i Karlskrona kommuns samlade verksamheter2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Purpose. A small number of management theories have had as much influence in the business world as Clayton M. Christensen’s theory of disruptive innovation. Its key presupposition – that entrant companies with products or services that customers initially couldn’t use as it appears to have lower performance can supersede established companies – continues to create a significant impact on management practices and stimulate rich debate within academics. The goal of this thesis is to validate a specific framework available on the literature that assess the potential market entry of new companies as sources of disruptive innovations, named “disruptive susceptibility”, and gain new insights based on the findings of a qualitative study related to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) industry. Trending topics on this fast paced evolving industry, such as “Connected Cars” or “Autonomous Vehicles” are creating a high source of inspiration and new technologies are emerging to address new ITS industry’s needs.

Methodology. Mixed methods research approach was applied utilizing convergent parallel mixed design. The research design process enabled an accurate confrontation of the disruptive susceptibility framework’s propositions against the target industry’s evidences collected from multiple relevant sources of evidences. Content validity and triangulation were applied to bring validity to the study.

Theory. Disruptive innovation, Disruptive Susceptibility, Industry life-cycle.

Conclusions. The disruptive susceptibility framework was validated for the ITS industry concluding that is a relevant instrument to identify and qualify the disruptive potential of new technologies. The results showed a high level of disruptive susceptibility in the ITS industry and the evidence gathered showed that conditional and accelerating propositions, when present, are most likely connected to an industry in a mature life-cycle stage. The study of the framework in further industries could provide more insights about this latter aspect. Furthermore, an additional proposition related to product life-cycles was proposed for the framework.

The study aims to answer the question: How and why is thetemporary agency workers’ perceived fairness and motivation at work impacted by notreceiving any direct financial bonus from the user company?Method: We have conducted a qualitative approach and made the study within a chosencompany suitable for our purpose. The data have been collected through in-depth interviewsto be able to take part of the interview subjects’ opinions, attitudes and experiences. Results: The temporary agency workers experience a procedural and distributive injusticelinked to the financial bonus. However, no overall organizational injustice is experienced, which can be explained by the fact that the temporary agency workers as a whole experienceperceived fair treatment from the company. The perceived motivation is not affected by theexclusion from the financial bonus, due to the fact that the needs of the consultants associatedwith the work consist of the amount of work that is possible. The motivation is influenced bythe number of shifts and the opportunity to earn more money through more shifts.

Understanding the Impact of Rewards on Employees’ Creativity and Innovation: a Literature Review Study2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this master’s thesis is to study how organizational rewards; intrinsic rewards and extrinsic monetary and non-monetary rewards, affect employees’ creativity and innovation within an organizational environment, and to propose a new categorization of organizational rewards.

Methodology: A literature review of selected peer-reviewed studies from different countries and industries.

Findings: The results of this study support the following notions; (1) intrinsic rewards support employees’ creativity and innovation through their positive impact on intrinsic motivation; (2) extrinsic non-monetary rewards support employees’ creativity and innovation ; (3) extrinsic monetary rewards can support or hinder employees’ creativity and innovation depending on external organizational factors. This study suggests a new model which categorizes organizational rewards into two main groups; monetary and non-monetary instead of extrinsic and intrinsic, and the non-monetary one into intrinsic and extrinsic while the monetary group includes only extrinsic rewards.

How to turn innovations into value in a large manufacturing company2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Large companies invest a vast amount of capital and time on R&D annually. With all this financial investment in R&D, it is important that the companies get value for their invested capital. By creating innovations, such as new products and services, involve high risk and will necessarily not lead to successful commercial ends. Many companies lack the competencies in selecting ideas and transform them into value. Knowledge in innovations is affecting companies, especially those that are investing heavily in R&D. The present study explain how value can be created from innovation around the topics of innovativeness, innovation protection and market efficiency, within a large global manufacturing company in Sweden with global operations. A four dimensional measure from a prior study has been the base for the structural theoretical model that has been tested. The authors have divided innovativeness, innovation protection and market efficiency into absorptive capacity (ACAP), open innovation, patents, secrecy, lead time advantages and complementary assets and studied modern literature to find relationships between these and how it affects firm performance. They have also done a survey and interviews to examine the present status in a large manufacturing company. The empirical findings show support for a relationship between ACAP and firm performance, ACAP and success of strategic alliances as well as a relationship between protection of innovation and success of strategic alliances.

Proof That Voluntary Corporate Responsibility Investments Does Not Affect Financial Returns When in the News2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the results of financial return analyses after 133 articles regarding social and environmental news were published in Svenska Dagbladet. During the period from 2006 to 2015 Swedish Large Cap companies were analysed after the news announcements, using the event study methodology. The study shows that abnormal returns were significant for only three events at the announcement date. A regression analysis shows that firms issuing ESG reports do not significantly have distinct returns from non-issuing firms when in the news. The study shows that firms producing consumer goods or services experienced 0.5 percent significant return differences compared to other firms in the pre-announcement period (two days). Findings also suggest that there are no significant differences between different industries when in the news regarding social and environmental aspects. An analysis of means shows no implications of differences regarding articles of: equality, employees, society or environment. This study concludes that voluntary corporate responsibility acts are not premiered when a firm is in the news regarding social or environmental events.

The purpose of our research was to make a comprehensive and comparative study. We wanted to examine the working men and women with and without children living at home and how they perceive stress at work and family demands. Perceived stress may occur when men and women with children are torn between work and family demands. We discuss the various coping strategies with focus on age and gender, and examine whether there are differences between full-time and part-time working women and men, and their perceived stress level. We also examine how women and men under the age of 40 use more coping strategies than women and men over the age of 40. To measure coping we use occupational health services Prevent due's stress test for employees. The results shows correlations between men with children and stress when it comes to family demands. Women with children living at home are experiencing more stress related to workload and the thought that it is harder to recover from stress than men with children living at home. When it comes to coping strategies, we found no significant relationship between women and men under 40 and women and men over the age of 40. Participants in the study were 53 women and men both with and without children living at home aged under and over 40 years old.

    Abstract [sv]

R&D strategies and Entrepreneurial Spawning2012In: Research Policy, ISSN 0048-7333, E-ISSN 1873-7625, Vol. 41, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper analyzes how different R&D strategies of incumbent firms affect the quantity and quality of their entrepreneurial spawning. By examining entrepreneurial ventures of ex-employees of firms with different R&D strategies three things emerge: First, firms with persistent R&D investments with a general superiority in sales, exports, productivity, profitability and wages are less likely to generate entrepreneurs than firm with temporary or no R&D investments. Second, start-ups from knowledge intensive business service (KIBS) firms with persistent R&D investments have a significantly increased probability of survival. No corresponding association between the R&D strategies of incumbents and survival of entrepreneurial spawns is found for incumbents in manufacturing sectors. Third, spin-outs from KIBS-firms are more likely to survive if they start in the same firm, indicating the importance of inherited related knowledge. The findings suggest that R&D intensive firms spur fewer entrepreneurs, but their entrepreneurial spawns tend to be of higher quality.

How Local are Spatial Density Externalities? Neighbourhood Effects in Agglomeration Economies2016In: Regional studies, ISSN 0034-3404, E-ISSN 1360-0591, Vol. 50, no 6, p. 1082-1095Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The geographic scale at which density externalities operate is analysed in this paper. Using geocoded high-resolution data, the analysis is focused on exogenously determined within-city squares (‘neighbourhoods’) of 1 km2. The analysis confirms a city-wide employment density–wage elasticity and an economically significant density–wage elasticity at the neighbourhood level that attenuate sharply with distance. Panel estimates over 20 years suggest a neighbourhood density–wage elasticity of about 3%, while the city-wide elasticity is about 1%. It is argued that the neighbourhood level is more prone to capture learning, e.g. through knowledge and information spillovers. This interpretation is supported by (1) significantly larger neighbourhood elasticities for university educated workers and (2) sharper attenuation with distance of the effect for such workers.

The sources of the urban wage premium by worker skills: Spatial sorting or agglomeration economies?2014In: Papers in regional science (Print), ISSN 1056-8190, E-ISSN 1435-5957, Vol. 93, no 4Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We estimate the respective importance of spatial sorting and agglomeration economies in explaining the urban wage premium for workers with different sets of skills. Sorting is the main source of the wage premium. Agglomeration economies are in general small, but are larger for workers with skills associated with non-routine job tasks. They also appear to involve human capital accumulation, as evidenced by the change in the wage of workers moving away from denser regions. For workers with routine jobs, agglomeration economies are virtually non-existent. Our results provide further evidence of spatial density bringing about productivity advantages primarily in contexts when problem-solving and interaction with others are important.

    Abstract [en]

We analyse the rate of formation, the characteristics, and the performance of different types of new firms in Sweden over a decade. Comparisons with Denmark, Brazil, and the United States suggest that the environment for new firm formation in Sweden is not markedly different than elsewhere. In line with previous studies, spin-offs of incumbents perform better than other types of new firms, particularly if their parent firm continues to operate. A novel finding is that the larger the size of their parent, the greater is the rate of employment growth of spin-offs. This contrasts sharply with findings for firms with a single owner.

Local entrepreneurship clusters in cities2016In: Journal of Economic Geography, ISSN 1468-2702, E-ISSN 1468-2710, Vol. 16, no 1, p. 39-66Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We show that entrepreneurs are co-located within cities. One plausible source of such spatial clustering is local social interactions, where individuals' decisions to become entrepreneurs are influenced by entrepreneurial neighbors. Using geo-coded matched employer-employee data for Sweden, we find that sharing residential neighborhood with established entrepreneurs has a statistically significant and robust influence on the probability that an individual leaves employment for entrepreneurship. An otherwise average neighborhood with a 5% point higher entrepreneurial intensity, all else equal, produces between six and seven additional entrepreneurs per square kilometer, each year. Our estimates suggest a local feedback-effect in which the presence of established entrepreneurs in a neighborhood influences the emergence of new local entrepreneurs. Our analysis supports the conjecture that social interaction effects constitute a mechanism by which local entrepreneurship clusters in cities develop and persist over time.

Urban preferences, amenities and age: Exploring the spatial distribution of age in Stockholm from 1991 to 20112018In: Regional Science Policy & Practice, E-ISSN 1757-7802Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cities exhibit a rich and complex heterogeneity in people and activities. This poses a sizable challenge for planners when planning new neighbourhoods or the reconstruction of old ones as well as when considering the allocation of supply of and demand for amenities, e.g. kindergartens or health facilities. However, individual preferences may also exhibit common denominators that may provide structure to this heterogeneity. One such denominator is age. In this paper we introduce the concept of neighbourhood age, defined as the mean age of people living in exogenously defined squares of 1km2 in a city. We use highly disaggregated geocoded data to map how the spatial distribution of neighbourhood age changes over a 20-year period from 1991 to 2011 in the city of Stockholm, Sweden. We then test the correlation between neighbourhood age and two categories of urban amenities: supply of local consumption amenities and distance to the city's central business district (CBD). The paper presents three main findings: First, neighbourhood age changes and polarizes significantly over the observed period, suggesting that different age groups are concentrating in different parts of the city. Second, there is a rejuvenation in the central parts of the city but also in more distant clusters of amenities. Third, over a long-term perspective, the results suggest that local clusters of consumption amenities outside the inner city may become increasingly attractive to younger people. Our conclusion is that neighbourhood age and age-related patterns over time provides a tool for planners to better understand the spatial distribution of age-related demand. © 2018 The Author(s). Rural to urban long-distance commuting in Sweden: Trends, characteristics and pathways2018In: Journal of Rural Studies, ISSN 0743-0167, E-ISSN 1873-1392, Vol. 59, p. 67-77Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The rise of ICT and the shift toward jobs with more flexibility in working hours and places of work sparked popular debates about potential for a ‘rural renaissance’. A key argument was that there are increasing possibilities to live in the countryside while being employed in large cities. This paper uses data spanning two decades to examine trends in and characteristics of employee–employer ties between rural and urban areas in Sweden. Our main results suggest that rural-to-urban long-distance commuting is rapidly increasing, but not as fast as commuting flows elsewhere. Compared to the rural population at large, rural residents working in large cities constitute a strongly selected group of workers who are well paid, have long educations, are young and also have advanced knowledge-intensive occupations. Only about 30 percent of those who become rural-to-urban long-distance commuters have moved from urban areas; the vast majority constitute those who already lived in rural areas before starting to commute to urban areas. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Does spatial employment density spur inter-firm job switching?2013In: The annals of regional science, ISSN 0570-1864, E-ISSN 1432-0592, Vol. 51, no 1, p. 245-272Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Inter-firm job switching of workers is a much cited but seldom measured source of the productivity advantages of spatial employment density. It has been advanced as a conduit for localized knowledge flows as well as labor market matching efficiency. Using a matched employer–employee dataset for Sweden, we estimate the influence spatial employment density has on the probability of inter-firm job switching of private sector workers. Our estimates suggest that a doubling of employment density per square kilometer increases the probability that a random worker switches employer by 0.2 % points. The same effect is substantially higher for more skilled workers. While the effect of a doubling of density is limited, the actual differences in density across the regions in our data amount to a factor over 40, rendering differences in density an important explanation for regional variations in rates of inter-firm job switching.

Acquisitions of start-ups by incumbent businesses A market selection process of "high-quality" entrants?2016In: Research Policy, ISSN 0048-7333, E-ISSN 1873-7625, Vol. 45, no 1, p. 272-290Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We analyze the frequency and nature by which new firms are acquired by established businesses. Acquisitions are often considered to reflect a technology transfer process and to also constitute one way in which a "symbiosis" between new technology-based firms (NTBFs) and established businesses is realized. Using a micro-level dataset for Sweden in which we follow new entrants up to 18 years after entry, we show that acquisitions of recent start-ups are rare and restricted to a small group of entrants with defining characteristics. Estimates from competing risks models show that acquired start-ups, in particular by multinational enterprises (MNEs), stand out from entrants that either remain independent or exit by being much more likely to be spin-offs operating in high-tech sectors, having strong technological competence, and having weak internal financial resources. Our overall findings support the argument that acquisitions primarily concern NTBFs in market contexts where entry costs are large, access to finance is important and incumbents have valuable complementary capabilities and resources. Increased gross profits fromintangible and tangible assets: From a modular product’s perspective2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The world and its economy is going through countless and significant changes. Intangible assets are one of these changes due to the economy and the society have a higher demand for information than before. Nevertheless, tangible assets are still important assets within the economy since no economy will function without tangible assets. Intangible assets and tangible assets can contribute to that a business is gaining competitive advantages and thereby, increasing the level of profits.

The focal study has been performed at Sweco Environment AB and aims to investigate how intangible assets and tangible assets contribute to increased gross profits within a specific service industry, where a modular product can be implemented. A modular product wasinvestigated in order to find differences and similarities which can affect a business’ opportunities to generate increased gross profit. The focal study is limited to a modular product and a specific industry, where it can be applied. In order to perform the focal study, scientific articles, books and reports have been utilised to form a foundation of the theoretical framework. The theoretical framework consists of sustainability, modularity and economics. Subsequently, a combination of a qualitative and quantitative research has been conducted. The qualitative research included observations and semi-structured interviews with experienced participants within the field. The quantitative research contained archival records with annual financial statements and balance sheets of private corporations within the Swedish market. The archival records were used in order to perform the econometric analysis.

The results from the observations and interviews demonstrated a holistic picture of the nonmodular product and the modular product. The main differences were found within the process from customer order to utilisation and the leasing option for the modular product. The econometric analysis which was performed in the specific service industry indicated that tangible assets were not statistically significant meanwhile, intangible assets were statistically significant. A 1 % increase in intangible assets contribute to 0.088 % increase in gross profit per employee. By investing in intangible assets does not only contribute to increased gross profits, it can also lead to competitive advantages.

Äldreomsorg och motivation: En kvantitativ studie om motivationsfaktorer och anställningsformer2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

How firms can reduce the risks with fixed price contracts2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 300 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Firms have had difficulties in dealing with the risks that occur when providing fixed price contracts (FP) for both small – scale and large – scale projects to involved customers. This is general for the most companies surveying customers with the development for a product or service in the IT – industry. Research has paid minimum attention on how firms can imple-ment scientific proven agile methods to reduce the risks with FP contracts to increase profit margin. In FP contracts, the risks lie on the supplier providing the contract, where research has shown that companies have issues in determining the project scope in the planning pro-cess and how they can find certain approaches for increasing the dialogue in a buyer and seller arrangement. Therefore, firms are more comfortable in going into Time and Material (T&M) arrangements where customers pay for the time and resources spent under a project process. This study also makes investigations on how firms can make accurate estimations of the development durations that occurs when providing this contracting form and how firms can identify risks into profitable pricing engagements. The study took ground in Lund, Swe-den at a company named Sigma Connectivity which is a firm developing services and prod-ucts based on wireless communication and the phenomenon called Internet Of Things (IoT).The delimitations that were made for this study was related to the marketing mix concept which conducts of seven strategies for business management of these seven strategies the choice was made to exclude exclude sustainable aspects, physical evidence, internal market-ing related to promotion, and location factors. Internal qualitative directive and semi – struc-tured interviews were methods used for determining variables and key issue with FP contracts that was included in the survey based approach to customers. Agile methods such as Feature Driven Development (FDD) and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) were implemented in or-der to tackle the challenges of visualising a clear project scope description with clear specifi-cation on what is included in a FP contracts in small – scale and large – scale projects. The results conducted from this study shows that integrating scientific proven methods such as FDD and WBS in a firm, will help them to divide project processes into smaller mecha-nisms, which will provide sufficient access for an increased project scope allocation forcing the involved parties in a buyer and seller arrangement to hold both internal and external re-views which will enable the possibility of making pricing approaches during the project pro-cess. Results also shows that customers find FP contracts to be the most valuable but the diffi-culties that they have felt in this arrangement is to incorporate new ideas for a project scope change during a project process. The use of the FDD framework and WBS provided results that are vital for firms going into FP arrangements where clearer project scope definitions, key role identifications, increased pricing opportunities and communication channels were founded. Keywords: Fixed price contracts (FP), project scope, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Feature Driven development (FDD).

Application of LEAN and BPR principles for Software Process Improvement (SPI): A case study of a large software development organization2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract ------------- Background ---------------- Like other businesses, the failures and problems faced by the software development industry over the time have motivated experts to look for software process improvement to create quality software rapidly, repeatedly, and reliably. Objective ------------ The purpose of this study is to evaluate if and how Lean thinking and principles primarily associated with auto manufacturing industry can be applied to software development lifecycle for Software Process Improvement (SPI). The secondary aim is to analyze how BPR can be integrated with Lean software development for process improvement. Method ---------- A derived Lean-BPR adoption pattern model is used as a theoretical framework for this thesis. The seven Lean software development principles along with four-step BPR process are selected as process improvement patterns, which effects the KPIs of a software organization. This research study incorporates both Qualitative and Quantitative methods and data to analyze the objectives of this study. The methodological framework of Plan-Do-Check-Act is used in the case study to implement process re-engineering incorporating Lean and BPR principles. The impact of adopting the Lean and BPR principles is assessed in terms of cost, productivity, quality of products and resource management. Results ---------- Application of Lean and BPR principles for software process improvement in the organization under study resulted in 79% improvement in test coverage, 60% reduction in time for test execution and analysis and 44% reduction in cost for fixing defects that were being passed to customer in past. Conclusion ------------- Based on case study results, it can be concluded that Lean, a bottom up approach, characterized by empowerment of employees to analyze and improve their own working process can be effectively combined with IT centric traditionally top down BPR approach for improving KPI’s and software processes.

SAMSPEL OCH LÄSFÖRSTÅELSE- Lärares upplevelser av samspel med lässvaga elever.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of my research was to develop new knowledge about teachers' experiences of interaction between teachers and students with weak reading comprehension and how these teachers feel that the phenomenon of interaction is expressed in a school context. A focus-group interview with four teachers who have been employed between 4-25 years have been conducted with a hermeneutic research approach as a basis for understanding teachers' perceptions of the phenomenon of interaction. The results suggest that the interaction and communication is an important part of the work. In the communication and interaction results show that concepts such as dialogue, development , understanding and rhetoric are tools that teachers work with in order to develop a better reading comprehension for students.

The Attitudes of Christian Church Pastors and Leaders toward Leadership Succession, For Leadership Continuity, in Charismatic and Pentecostal Church Organizations in Kumasi, Ghana.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Lack of cooperation of the incumbent leaders was a major cause of leadership succession failures of organizations reported. This investigation was carried out to determine the attitudes of Christian Senior Pastors and leaders (associate Pastors and Elders), for leadership continuity, toward leadership succession of Charismatic and Pentecostal Church organizations in Kumasi, Ghana; to find lasting solution to the problem of lack of cooperation of incumbent leaders towards leadership succession planning by determining the root cause of lack of cooperation of incumbent senior leader towards leadership succession. Using in-depth interview, qualitative data was collected and analyzed using inductive procedure of Structuring (Ordering) of Meanings Using Narrative for analysis. This work contends that even though best practices are necessary condition for leadership succession effectiveness, they are not sufficient to make the incumbent senior leader willing and cooperative enough to act in the best interest of the organization, let alone yield to leadership succession. It was found that the Christian Churches investigated have positive attitudes towards leadership succession because of character development adopted in the churches. It was found that apart from fear (Freeman, 2004; Zhang and Rajagopalan, 2006; 2010) and ego (Freeman, 2004; Beeson, 2006; Ciampa, 2005), unforgveness and self-centeredness were other causes, holding back the effectiveness of leadership succession due to lack of cooperation of the incumbents, with self-centeredness being the source of fear, ego and unforgiveness. It was concluded that self-centeredness was the root cause of lack of cooperation of Senior Pastors towards leadership succession. Because fear (Freeman, 2004; Zhang and Rajagopalan, 2006; 2010), ego (Freeman, 2004; Beeson, 2006; Ciampa, 2005), unforgiveness and self-centeredness produce insecurity, the incumbents were never willing and cooperative to subject themselves to anything they perceived as threat. On the basis of this, succession failures reported will rather increase in frequency. Nevertheless, self-centeredness could be resolved effectively by adopting character development focused on the following nine attributes: Faith, Peace, Joy, Humility, Patience, Self-control, Kindness, Goodness and Love (value, respect, approval, availability, attention, appreciation and service). The results suggest that the incumbent Pastors have the tendency to take actions, make choices and decisions that are in the best interest of their organization, and are favorably disposed towards leadership succession. The Christian Churches are well positioned to produce leaders who are cooperative and selfless enough to plan their own succession using best practices that yield desired outcomes. This work contributes to a better understanding of attitudes, character, relationship, motivation, highlights the invisible features (self-centeredness, fear, ego and unforgiveness) of leadership succession failures in the organization, and the transformation of character that results by simple change of attitudes consistently modified by love and its attributes so that the decisions, choices and actions of the incumbents can favor the organization, consequently, making them willing and cooperative enough to plan their own succession. Based on the results of the Christian Church organization, it serves as a basis for further research in the field.

    Abstract [sv]

Slutrapport.2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Anställdas uppfattning av arbetsplatslärande2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hur Anställda Erfar Självförmåga2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AS A CATALYST FOR CONSUMER CHOICE2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Even though research on CSR activities has been on the rise, they do not have generally ratified and widely acclaimed explanation with regard to the variation in consumer response to firms operating within the same industry and supporting the same CSR activities. The aim of this research was to investigate the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in catalyzing consumer choice. The writers used quantitative research method whereby data was collected by means of online questionnaires in an online survey. The analysis was carried out through frequency, descriptive, reliability, correlation and regression analyses. We realized that although a relationship exists between CSR and consumer behavior through the three channels including legitimacy, information asymmetry and ethical decision making, CSR does not drive sales, but increases the appetite for more CSR information for use in product assessment. Therefore, the engagement in CSR may only increase purchasing and evaluation intention, but not the actual purchase. Given that CSR directly results in the increased information search, the best way to orient CSR to stimulate consumer purchase is through the availability of CSR information to the consumer through localization of CSR activities alongside product excellence and competitive product pricing. Our recommendation is that future research should consider smaller geographical zones, for instance an institution or a city.
