Based on a long-term research collaboration with an aerospace product manufacturer, this paper introduces an improved prototype of the Sustainability Criteria and Product Life-Cycle Data Simulation digital decision-support tool for visualising and comparing the sustainability implications of product design concepts. Unlike existing tools, it allows quantitative comparisons in early design stages and is based on overarching socio-ecological sustainability principles and a backcasting perspective. A sustainability merit score for each product design concept is derived from selected indicators and sustainability criteria. The paper also reports on the results from a focus group evaluation study and discusses the value and challenges faced when developing this type of tool, including accuracy, data availability limitations, and the dilemma of indicator weighting. ","DOI":"10.1016/j.procir.2025.08.172","ScopusId":"2-s2.0-105015296547","NBN":"urn:nbn:se:bth-28632","volume":"136","page":"1014-1020","container-title":"Procedia CIRP","event":"35th CIRP Design Conference, CIRP Design 2025, Patras, April 2-4, 2025","keyword":"Artificial intelligence; Decision support systems; Ecodesign; Ecology; Life cycle; Product design; Sustainable development; Decision support tool; Decision supports; Design concept; Early design stages; Industrial case; Product concepts; Strategic decision making; Support tool; Sustainability criteria; Sustainability indicators; Decision making","publisher":"Elsevier","note":"[ed] Mourtzis D.","published":[{"raw":"2025-09-19T15:00:00.000+02:00"}],"created":[{"raw":"2025-09-19T15:00:33.078+02:00"}],"updated":[{"raw":"2025-09-30T12:01:03.384+02:00"}],"URL":"https://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-28632"},{"id":"diva2:1503252","type":"paper-conference","issued":{"date-parts":[[2021]]},"title":"Understanding Customer Preference : Outline of a New Approach to Prioritise Sustainability Product Information","language":"eng","author":[{"family":"Kwok","given":"Sze Yin","ORCID":"0000-0003-4703-8519","localId":"syk","affiliation":[{"id":"16813","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för strategisk hållbar utveckling"}]},{"family":"Hallstedt","given":"Sophie","ORCID":"0000-0002-7382-1825","localId":"sht","affiliation":[{"id":"16813","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för strategisk hållbar utveckling"}]},{"family":"Boeva","given":"Veselka","ORCID":"0000-0003-3128-191x","localId":"vbx","affiliation":[{"id":"881506","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för datavetenskap"}]}],"abstract":"The communication of sustainability values shared between product developers and customers is an important catalyst for effective collaboration that inspires sustainable consumption. Despite the many tools developed for assessing and communicating product’s sustainability performance, customers are facing difficulties in understanding product sustainability information. The knowledge gaps remain underexplored about how product sustainability information is perceived and how this impacts customer purchasing behaviour. This paper outlines a new approach, driven by both backcasting and forecasting thinking, for understanding and modelling customer preferences for product sustainability information. We report findings from a case study of a large workplace furniture manufacturer. The study explored the potential of i) identifying prioritised sustainability attributes using Sustainability Design Space (SDS), and ii) applying machine learning to model customer preferences.","ISBN":"978-981-15-8131-1","DOI":"10.1007/978-981-15-8131-1_3","NBN":"urn:nbn:se:bth-20762","page":"-40","container-title":"Sustainable Design and Manufacturing 2020 Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Sustainable Design and Manufacturing (KES-SDM 2020)","event":"Sustainable Design and Manufacturing 2020, online, 9-11 September","keyword":"Sustainability Communication; Customer Preference; Sustainable Product Development; Data Mining; Machine Learning; Information Design.","publisher":"Springer","note":"[ed] Scholz, Steffen G., Howlett, Robert J., Setchi, Rossi","published":[{"raw":"2020-11-23T18:58:00.000+01:00"}],"created":[{"raw":"2020-11-23T18:58:48.193+01:00"}],"updated":[{"raw":"2025-09-30T13:15:14.669+02:00"}],"URL":"https://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-20762"},{"id":"diva2:1504265","type":"article-journal","status":"Published","issued":{"date-parts":[[2020]]},"title":"A research roadmap for sustainable design methods and tools","language":"eng","author":[{"family":"Faludi","given":"Jeremy","affiliation":[{"name":"TU Delft, HS Delft, NL "}]},{"family":"Hoffenson","given":"Steven","affiliation":[{"name":"Stevens Institute of Technology, USA"}]},{"family":"Kwok","given":"Sze Yin","ORCID":"0000-0003-4703-8519","localId":"syk","affiliation":[{"id":"16813","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för strategisk hållbar utveckling"}]},{"family":"Saidani","given":"Michael","affiliation":[{"name":"Université Paris-Saclay, FRA"}]},{"family":"Hallstedt","given":"Sophie","ORCID":"0000-0002-7382-1825","localId":"sht","affiliation":[{"id":"16813","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för strategisk hållbar utveckling"}]},{"family":"Telenko","given":"Cassandra","affiliation":[{"name":"Ford Motor Company, USA"}]},{"family":"Martinez","given":"Victor Gerardo","affiliation":[{"name":"Polytechnic University, CAN"}]}],"abstract":"Sustainable design methods and tools abound, but their implementation in practice remains marginal. This article brings together results from previous literature reviews and analyses of sustainable design methods and tools, as well as input from design researchers and professional practitioners to identify the needs and gaps in the area. It results in a shared vision of how sustainable design methods and tools can be more tightly integrated into mainstream product design and development, as well as the current state of practice and research in relation to four central questions: What are the needs and values of industry regarding sustainable design? What improvements in sustainable design methods and tools would most drive industry forward? How should researchers move forwardwith developingmore useful sustainable designmethods and tools? Howcan sustainable design be more effectively integrated into industry? A roadmap for the international sustainable design research community is proposed with descriptions of short-, medium-, and long-term tasks for addressing each question. The purpose is to support collective progress and discussions on method and tool development and adoption, and to enablemore tangible success inmainstreaming sustainable design practices in industry. © 2020 by the authors.","DOI":"10.3390/su12198174","ScopusId":"2-s2.0-85092635706","NBN":"urn:nbn:se:bth-20792","issue":"19","volume":"12","number":"8174","container-title":"Sustainability","ISSN":"2071-1050","keyword":"Design methodologies; Design methods and tools; Industry adoption; Product development; Research agenda; Sustainable design; design method; literature review; research method; sustainable development","publisher":"MDPI","note":"open access","published":[{"raw":"2020-11-27T10:27:00.000+01:00"}],"created":[{"raw":"2020-11-27T10:27:29.031+01:00"}],"updated":[{"raw":"2025-09-30T13:15:05.366+02:00"}],"URL":"https://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-20792"},{"id":"diva2:1503261","type":"paper-conference","issued":{"date-parts":[[2020]]},"title":"Approach for Sustainability Criteria and Product Life : Cycle Data Simulation in Concept Selection","language":"eng","author":[{"family":"Kwok","given":"Sze Yin","ORCID":"0000-0003-4703-8519","localId":"syk","affiliation":[{"id":"16813","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för strategisk hållbar utveckling"}]},{"family":"Schulte","given":"Jesko","ORCID":"0000-0003-2563-8273","localId":"jys","affiliation":[{"id":"16813","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för strategisk hållbar utveckling"}]},{"family":"Hallstedt","given":"Sophie","ORCID":"0000-0002-7382-1825","localId":"sht","affiliation":[{"id":"16813","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för strategisk hållbar utveckling"}]}],"abstract":"Companies struggle with identifying relevant sustainability aspects strategically, assessing alternative solutions quantitatively, and making trade-offs.
