The purpose of AXESS is to explore the use of Extended Reality (XR) as a problem solver for the industry.Products and service providers could use XR to assess customer needs and possible solutions, involving stakeholders with different backgrounds through visual and immersive experiences during development and operational processes. The purpose of AXESS is to explore the use of Extended Reality (XR) as a problem solver for the industry. Major players in the mining and construction sectors are undergoing disruptive trends, including digitalisation and servitizations. Simulations and Digital Twins enable more flexible fleet management, advanced monitoring, prediction, and decision support. However, there is a need for making these support systems more accessible for all the stakeholders involved, from operators to site managers and higher ranks. A possibility is to leverage the explanatory capabilities of eXtended Reality and Artificial Intelligence. This preliminary research study examined three Decision Support System solutions that were characterised by different levels of visualisation, contextualisation, and immersion. A qualitative study of N = 10 industry experts provided insights that were coded into design guidelines. Practitioners identified an increasing demand for scalable, user-centric solutions that support stakeholders throughout the decision-making process. XR and AI were well-received, and the importance of integrating value-driven design principles to ensure system trustworthiness and usability was widely acknowledged. Highlights Development of three DecisionSupport Systems with varying immersion and functionalities (e.g. XR and AI) for quarry vehicle management. Analysis of criticalities and potential of existing solutions through focus groups with industry experts. Definition of a set of guidelines and insights to support Decision Support Systems designers and decision makers. ","DOI":"10.1080/09544828.2026.2629759","ScopusId":"2-s2.0-105030148870","NBN":"urn:nbn:se:bth-29204","container-title":"Journal of engineering design (Print)","ISSN":"1466-1837","keyword":"artificial intelligence; Decision support systems; extended reality; focus group; guidelines; Construction industry; Decision making; Digital twin; Fleet operations; Construction sectors; Decision supports; Decisions makings; Focus groups; Guideline; Industry experts; Market demand; Mining sector; Support systems","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","published":[{"raw":"2026-02-27T11:51:00.000+01:00"}],"created":[{"raw":"2026-02-27T11:51:34.879+01:00"}],"updated":[{"raw":"2026-02-27T12:53:45.468+01:00"}],"URL":"https://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-29204"},{"id":"diva2:2024906","type":"paper-conference","issued":{"date-parts":[[2025]]},"title":"A roadmap for XR integration in industry : challenges and opportunities","language":"eng","author":[{"family":"Scurati","given":"Giulia Wally","ORCID":"0000-0002-0389-4279","localId":"gws","affiliation":[{"id":"16811","name":"Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för maskinteknik"}]}],"abstract":"This paper discusses the current challenges in the development and adoption of Extended Reality (XR) applications in the industry, based on the author’s experience collaborating with various sectors.
