Abstract [en]

This bachelor's thesis investigates whether or not there is a connection with how strong audiovisual dissonance is experienced if the mediaform contains more or less sensory information about sound and image, also called hot and cold media. To test the theory, the design method “research through design” was used to create two different iterations. The first iteration was a collection of films that were compared against each other, where different parameters, both auditory and visual, were changed with varying amounts of sensory information. The second iteration followed the same concept but was based on gaming media. To evaluate our second design, a test group was used whose results were ultimately compared to our first design. In the results of the first iteration, it was discovered that hot and cold media had a direct impact on how audiovisual dissonance is experienced. In our second iteration, a clear difference was noticed when it came to the effectiveness of applying the methodology in film versus computer games, as the dissonance was generally easier to perceive in film, it was also perceived as stronger. Computer games, unlike movies, require more of the player's participation, interactivity and coordination whose characteristics are decisive for what the medium ultimately conveys to different people. The videos were simple and clear when it came to where their audiovisual dissonance occurred, while in our test group that played the computer game some noticed certain aspects of audiovisual dissonance while others interpreted it quite differently. In the end all test subjects experienced the audiovisual dissonance to some degree. In conclusion, it is possible to create an audiovisual dissonance in computer games, however it is much more difficult to experience it than it is in film.
