Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Levels and environments have always played an essential role in how players experience games and stories. The purpose of this study was to explore how game developers can use level design components to strengthen the emotional connection to the game's story. Examples of methods explored in the study are storyboarding, moodboarding and game mechanics. "What does a level designer need to keep in mind to create an engaging story?", was just one of several questions answered in the article. The study gives examples of how level designers can use the various methods to strengthen the connection between the player and the story. The study also has a design whose purpose is to be a practical example of all the methods and components the study examines and how they are used. The result of the study is a finished game demo with a strong focus on storytelling and level design and effectively shows how the methods and techniques were implemented.
