A Study on Selected Bluetooth Security and Pricing in Wireless Headphones and Keyboards

Abstract [en]
Background. Security within consumer goods such as headphones, mobiles and computers, can be a very sensitive subject, as the consequences of it being exploited can range dramatically and can seriously create issues. So does paying more for a device provide the owner benefits when it comes to security, or does a lower-cost product provide the same benefits?
Objectives. The objective of the thesis is to investigate if there exists a correlation between cost and security in regards to Bluetooth communication. This is was done by executing multiple IT-security related tests against two sets of electronic devices utilizing the Bluetooth protocol for communication and analyzing the results.
Methods. In order to answer the set objective, an experiment was conducted. In this experiment, a set of two Bluetooth headphones and three keyboards was put through the wringer against a set of IT-security related tests. The tests focused on different vulnerabilities that can be found within the IT-security sphere, and in this case they were Denial of Service, BrakTooth, SweynTooth and Fuzzing. Each combination of Bluetooth device and test was conducted ten times to enable a bigger picture that would showcase if a test successfully affected a Bluetooth device. The results from each round were analyzed to answer the objective.
Results. A total of two hundred experiments were conducted, and the results show that none of the products were affected by the tests outlined in the method section.
Conclusions. Through the conducted experiment, we came to the conclusion that there is no correlation between price and the amount of vulnerabilities found, and we also saw that lower cost Bluetooth devices does not contain more vulnerabilities compared to higher cost ones.
