Abstract [en]
Background: Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have showed their importance in the marine sector as they successfully conducted tasks in exploration and survey with greater efficiency and reduction in cost and increase in human safety. This due to the ability to perform missions without the need of human interaction or presence. Continued AUV development is essential to enable the execution of new tasks. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) offers investigation of hydrodynamic performance which can be used in AUV development but it generates challenges.
Objectives: This thesis aims to create a method for efficient implementation of CFD in the AUV design process. The method aims to generate decision support for AUV design, thereby promoting advancements in development and improve AUV performance.
Methods: The participatory action research methodology is applied to conduct the thesis work on real-life AUV design. An approach is structured to identify and adapt components to build a framework for simulations and validation. Review of related works and elicitation methods, such as interview and a site visit, are used along with implementation to a test case, enabling evaluation of the proposed framework.
Results: The results present findings that enable the development of the framework which consists of four simulation techniques and validation through a log data analysis, followed by the results generated by applying the proposed framework to the test case. The framework applied to the test case evaluates a design change based on generating five different hydrodynamic components through CFD, where comparative design evaluation is used to create decision support. Log data analysis of conducted speed trials are used to validate the CFD through comparing data before and after the design change which reveals benefits and drawbacks of using the new design. The proposed framework finds that the new design reduces the use of vertical thrusters to correct the pitch angle while increasing the resistance.
Conclusions: The proposed framework can efficiently be implemented to the design process and generate some decision support for AUV design. Further development is needed to reduce uncertainty and increase accuracy. The support generated by the framework gives designers insight into the expected performance of the design, helping them decide whether further development is necessary or if the design is ready for manufacturing and testing.
