Abstract [en]

This project presents EcoBuddy, an interactive digital prototype designed to introduce children aged 6–9 to key sustainability concepts through emotionally engaging storytelling and gamified decision-making. Grounded in the principles of affective and transformative learning, EcoBuddy aims to foster empathy, critical reflection, and behavioral change by engaging children in narrative experiences that reflect real-world environmental challenges. The primary aim of the application is to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda by fostering early awareness and action related to sustainability. Each story path is aligned with specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as Goal 12 (responsible consumption), Goal 13 (climate action), and Goal 15 (life on land) (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2019). Created in Stornaway.io, the branching narrative allows users to make meaningful decisions that shape the story’s outcome, encouraging early systems thinking and values-based learning. A mixed-methods approach was used to evaluate the tool’s effectiveness, including child-friendly questionnaires and observational feedback from testing sessions. Preliminary findings suggest that integrating affective and transformative learning with digital storytelling can increase emotional engagement, enhance comprehension, and empower children to reflect on their role in building a more sustainable future. EcoBuddy demonstrates the potential of interactive educational tools to actively contribute to the realization of Agenda 2030 in early education, with future work focusing on AI-driven personalization and broader classroom implementation.
