Automation for Industrial Assembly Processes : Automated Handling of Pole Bolt Assemblies (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The battery manufacturer SAFT AB in Oskarshamn has, over the past year, embarked on a journey toward increased automation to become more competitive while also reducing repetitive tasks to improve ergonomics. They have developed a clear industrial vision extending to the year 2040. This vision is called "No Touch!", with the goal of achieving fully automated production by 2040. This project plays a crucial role in helping SAFT AB achieve their "No Touch!" vision for 2040.
The project focuses on automating the handling of SAFT AB:s pole bolt assembly (a pole bolt with a mounted screw), which is a key component of their batteries. The issue has been identified at the company's two “Stackings” stations, where the process is currently performed manually by an operator.
The operator handles approximately 900 unorganized pole bolts per shift, distributing them evenly between two parallel tracks and assembling a screw two to three turns into each pole bolt. Afterward, the pole bolt assembly is fed into the next stage of production.
The proposed solution aims to automate as much of the process as possible while accommodating a variation of seven different pole bolt types and two different screw types. At the same time, the system must retain the existing cassettes (containers) in which the pole bolts are transported to the station.
After a thorough investigation, concept generation, evaluation of various concepts, prototype development, and testing, a unique, cost-efficient, and innovative automated solution has been developed.
The developed solution can, in an automated manner, without a vision system, pick up the pole bolts from SAFT AB's existing container, distribute them evenly between two parallel tracks with the correct orientation, and install a screw two to three turns in each pole bolt. Afterward, the pole bolt assembly is transported to the next stage of production.
