Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This study explores the potential of using an interactive story to introduce basic economic concepts to children aged 7–10. The project addresses a gap in the Swedish curriculum (Lgr22), where personal finance is formally introduced only from the fourth grade, despite the fact that younger children already engage with money in daily life. A prototype was created in Twine where children make narrative choices and observe the impact on a visual money calculator that reflects the consequences of their economic decisions.
Data was collected through a mixed-method survey, combining Likert-scale items with open-ended responses from teachers and parents familiar with the target group. The results show that the story was perceived as engaging, understandable, and pedagogically relevant. A key strength was the ability for the user to influence the story, while suggestions for improvement included more visual elements and clearer guidance in the choices.
The findings suggest that interactive storytelling has strong potential as an accessible and meaningful tool to teach economic concepts in early education. The combination of gamification, learner autonomy, and visual feedback appears to create a learning environment that is both engaging and educational.
