Abstract [en]

Engineering design work often involve time consuming simulations to check that structural properties are satisfactory under load. In order to streamline the process of early design work, this work will present a configuration tool which with use of a metamodel intends to provide a way of getting a design proposal without running simulations. The configuration tool will be implemented on a positioner from Yaskawa. This work will use a positioner as a case study in building a configuration tool based on a parametric CAD model that uses metamodel data to circumvent simulations in early design stages.

The challenge of properly exploring a design space when gathering data for a metamodel is performed by using the sampling method Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS). In addition, to reduce complexity of metamodel creation reduction of amount of design parameters is performed with usage of a parameter sensitivity analysis method called the Morris method. By usage of 500 generated samples (LHS), input data for metamodeling was created. The process involves creating a simulation automation loop, in Autodesk Inventor, using iLogic rules.

Using the results from simulation automation, a configuration tool is created within the Autodesk Inventor environment. The configuration tool takes user specified inputs, such as height and load capacity, and runs optimization on the metamodel to find a design proposal for the given inputs. Resulting proposed design is showed within the Inventor environment to the user. Overall outcome of the performed work provides a case-study in integration of metamodel in design work, final metamodel used in configuration tool has a relative error of 24%. The configuration tool provides a design proposal which can be used to further develop the design and is intended as an early approximation of what a final design can look like.
